Abstract
The field of hybrid materials has grown so wildly in the last 30 years that writing a comprehensive review has turned into an impossible mission. Yet, the need for a general view of the field remains, and it would be certainly useful to draw a scientific and technological map connecting the dots of the very different subfields of hybrid materials, a map which could relate the essential common characteristics of these fascinating materials while providing an overview of the very different combinations, synthetic approaches, and final applications formulated in this field, which has become a whole world. That is why we decided to write this metareview, that is, a review of reviews that could provide an eagle's eye view of a complex and varied landscape of materials which nevertheless share a common driving force: the power of hybridization.

Preparation and Properties of Low Dielectric Constant Siloxane/Carbosilane Hybrid Benzocyclobutene Resin Composites. MATERIALS 2021; 14:ma14216548. [PMID: 34772073 PMCID: PMC8585461 DOI: 10.3390/ma14216548] [Citation(s) in RCA: 3] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/07/2021] [Revised: 10/16/2021] [Accepted: 10/26/2021] [Indexed: 11/22/2022]
Abstract
Benzocyclobutene-modified silsesquioxane (BCB-POSS) and divinyl tetramethyl disiloxane-bisbenzocyclobutene (DVS-BCB) prepolymer were introduced into the containing benzocyclobutene (BCB) unit matrix resin P(4-MB-co-1-MP) polymerized from 1-methyl-1-(4-benzocyclobutenyl) silacyclobutane (4-MSCBBCB) and 1-methyl-1-phenylsilacyclobutane (1-MPSCB), respectively. The low dielectric constant (low-k) siloxane/carbosilane hybrid benzocyclobutene resin composites, P(4-MB-co-1-MP)/BCB-POSS and P(4-MB-co-1-MP)/DVS-BCB, were prepared. The curing processes of the composites were assessed via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The effects on dielectric properties and heat resistance of those composites with different proportion of BCB-POSS and DVS-BCB were investigated using an impedance analyzer and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), respectively. The thermal curing of composites could be carried out by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of the BCB four-member rings of BCB-POSS or DVS-BCB and those of P(4-MB-co-1-MP). With increasing the proportion of BCB-POSS to 30%, the 5% weight loss temperature (T5%) of P(4-MB-co-1-MP)/BCB-POSS composites was raised visibly, whereas the dielectric constant (k) was decreased owing to the introduction of nanopores into POSS. For P(4-MB-co-1-MP)/DVS-BCB composites, the T5% and k were slightly raised with increasing the proportion of DVS-BCB. The above results indicated that the BCB-POSS showed advantages over conventional fillers to simultaneously improve thermostability and decrease k.

Abstract
A novel fluorescent probe was designed and synthesized from tetraphenylethene (TPE) and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) via Heck-palladium catalyzed cross-coupling reaction. The as-synthesized TPE functionalized probe performed good solvent stability and selectively preconcentration capability towards target analyte due to its stable structure and the adsorption property. The morphology as well as the physical and chemical properties of the POSS@TPE were carefully characterized. The POSS@TPE was employed to develop an effective fluorescent probe for trifluralin, with a response range of 0.1-80 mg/kg and a detection limit of 0.102 mg/kg. The mixed mechanisms of inner-filter effect (IFE) and photoinduced electron transfer (PET) explain the selectivity of POSS@TPE. Rapid detection for trifluralin in tomato and celery has been achieved with recoveries between 99.4-120.7% (RSD≤3.4%), and the results were verified compared with GC-MS method.

Abstract
Searching for drug carries with controlled release and good biocompatibility has always been one of the research hotspots and difficulties. Herein, core-sheath nanofibrous mats (NFs) consisting of biocompatible poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO, core) and poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA, sheath) for drug delivery were fabricated via coaxial electrospinning strategy. The nontoxic layered silicate rectorite (REC) with 0.5-1 wt % amount was introduced in the sheath for sustained drug delivery. Layered REC could be intercalated with PLLA macromolecule chains, leading to the densified structure for loading and keeping doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) while reversibly capturing and releasing DOX to delay the drug migration due to its high cation activity. The addition of REC in NFs could delay the initial burst release of DOX and prolong the residence time from 12 to 96 h. Moreover, DOX-loaded core-sheath NFs had in vitro culture with strong antitumor activity, which was confirmed by cytotoxicity results and live and dead assay. HepG2 tumor-bearing xenograft further demonstrated the tumor-suppression effect and the excellent safety of the DOX-loaded core-sheath NFs in vivo. The constructed NFs as drug carriers showed great potential in the local treatment of solid tumors.

Abstract
Abstract
In this work, octamercapto polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS-8SH) and octaphenol polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS-8Phenol) were successfully synthetized. POSS-8Phenol was added into the synthesis process of liquid thermoset phenolic resin (PR) to obtain POSS-modified phenolic resin (POSS-PR). Chemical structures of POSS-8SH, POSS-8Phenol, and POSS-PR were confirmed by FTIR and 1H-NMR. TG and DTG analysis under different atmosphere showed that char yield of POSS-PR at 1,000°C increased from 58.6% to 65.2% in N2, which in air increased from 2.3% to 26.9% at 700°C. The maximum pyrolysis temperature in air increased from 543°C to 680°C, which meant better anti-oxidation properties. XRD results confirmed both POSS-8Phenol and POSS-PR-generated crystalline SiO2 in air, which could explain the improvement of anti-oxidation properties. SEM showed that the POSS-PR had phase separation during curing process. Finally, carbon fiber fabric-reinforced POSS-PR (C-POSS-PR) was prepared to verify the anti-oxidation properties of POSS-PR.

Abstract
Abstract
An azido-terminated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) compound, octakis(azidopropyl-3-oxycarbonyl-1-decyl-10-thiopropyl-3-)POSS (OADTP), is synthesized and characterized. POSS-polytriazole (PTA) resins are prepared from an azide, an alkyne monomer, and OADTP. The toughening effect of OADTP on PTA resins is analyzed by impact performance test and electronic microscope characterization, and the thermal performance of resins is measured by thermogravimetric analysis and dynamic mechanical analysis. The results show that the addition of the POSS can improve the mechanical properties of PTA resins. The impact strength of POSS-PTA resins first increases and then decreases with the increase in the POSS compound, and the maximum one arrives at 54.8 kJ m−2 which increases by 44.2% as compared to 38 kJ m−2 of the PTA resin. A good thermal stability remains in POSS-PTA resins.

Abstract
The internal concentration polarization (ICP) of asymmetric osmotic membranes with support layers greatly reduced membrane water permeability, therefore compromising membrane performance. In this study, a series of free-standing symmetric hybrid forward osmosis (FO) membranes without experiencing ICP were fabricated by covalently linking metal-organic framework (MOF) nanofillers with a polymer matrix. Owing to the introduction of MOFs, which allow only water permeation but reject salts by steric hindrance, the prepared hybrid membranes could approach the empirical permeability-selectivity trade-off. The optimized hybrid membrane displayed an outstanding water/Na2SO4 selectivity of ∼1208.4 L mol-1, compared with that of conventional membranes of ∼375.6 L mol-1. Additionally, the fabricated hybrid membranes showed excellent mechanical robustness, maintaining structural integrity during the long-term FO separation of high-salinity solution. This work provides an effective methodology to fabricate high-performance, symmetric MOF-based membranes for osmotic separation processes such as seawater desalination and water purification.

Abstract
Two phosphorus-containing cage-like silsesquioxane derivatives were synthesized as reactive or additive flame retardants for epoxy resin. The silsesquioxanes were obtained via an epoxide ring-opening reaction using a 10-hydroxy-9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPA). In one derivative containing in its structure 4 glycidoxypropyl and 4 phosphate groups, denoted as 4P4GS, only half of the epoxy rings was reacted with phosphate to obtain a reactive additive, while in the second derivative containing 8 phosphate groups, denoted as 8PS, all epoxy groups were converted, thus an additive modifier was obtained. The silsesquioxanes containing phosphorus atoms and the reactive phosphorus-free silsesquioxane derivative (octakis[(3-glycidoxypropyl)dimethylsiloxy]octasilsesquioxane (8GS)) were used to prepare hybrid materials based on epoxy resin. To compare the impact of the structure of silsesquioxane derivatives on the properties of hybrid materials, a number of samples containing 1, 5, and 10% of the modifiers making a series of epoxy materials containing additive or reactive modifiers, were obtained. The modified epoxies were studied using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), nanoindentation, water contact angle, and cone calorimetry tests to assess the effects of the modifier structure on the physicochemical properties of the investigated materials.

Abstract
The review describes the synthesis and properties of various forms of polyphenylsilsesquioxane (PPSQ). Among the forms described, we present the well-known ladder (l-PPSQ) and polyhedral (p-PPSQ) forms, from the first studies to the latest achievements. The practical prospects of these compounds and the possibility of their modification are estimated. These PPSQ have a regular polycyclic structure, which allowed us to compare them with random polycyclic analogs (r-PPSQ). The last part of the review describes the acyclic PPSQ (a-PPSQ) obtained recently. The methods for their synthesis and modification are presented. Modification of (a-PPSQ) allows two new forms of PPSQ to be obtained. The first one is a hyperbranched PPSQ. The second one is a globular PPSQ or a nanogel as it is called by the authors. Both forms are of great interest because their physicochemical properties differ greatly from the known ones (l-PPSQ, p-PPSQ, r-PPSQ). The areas of practical application of the new PPSQ forms are predicted. The review describes the synthesis and properties of various forms of polyphenylsilsesquioxane (PPSQ).![]()

Abstract
We realized the synthesis of carbon nanorods-monodisperse colloidal particles with a length of 50 nm and a width of 20 nm-which can be considered an addition to the family of light-emitting carbon-based nanostructures. Their anisotropic shape is determined by the use of the surfactant aminopropylisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, and their optical properties originate from domains of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons incorporated within an inorganic framework. The nanorods show dual polarized emission with a quantum yield of 15-20% and emission anisotropy of ∼0.3, which changes from blue (460 nm) to yellow (565 nm) depending on the excitation wavelength. These carbon nanorods expand the range of light-emitting carbon nanomaterials available for optoelectronic and biolabeling applications.

Abstract
A novel organic-inorganic hybrid containing allyl benzoxazine and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) was synthesized by the thiol-ene (click) reaction. The benzoxazine (BOZ)-containing POSS (SPOSS-BOZ) copolymerized with benzoxazine/epoxy resin was used to prepare composites of SPOSS-PBZ-E nanocomposites(NPs). The polymerization behavior was monitored by FTIR and non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), which showed that the composites had completely cured with multiple polymerization mechanisms according to the oxazine ring-opening and epoxy resin (EP) polymerization. The thermal properties of the organic-inorganic polybenzoxazine (PBZ) nanocomposites were analyzed by DSC and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Furthermore, the X-ray diffraction analysis and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs of the SPOSS-PBZ-E nanocomposites indicated that SPOSS was chemically incorporated into the hybrid nanocomposites in the size range of 80-200 nm. The flame retardancy of the benzoxazine epoxy resin composites was investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL 94 vertical burn test, and cone calorimeter tests. When the amount of SPOSS reached 10% or more, the vertical burning rating of the curing system arrived at V-1, and when the SPOSS-BOZ content reached 20 wt %, the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the material were both improved. Moreover, in the cone calorimeter testing, the addition of SPOSS-BOZ hindered the decomposition of the composites and led to a reduction in the peak heat release rate (pHRR), the average heat release rate (aHRR), and the total heat release (THR) values by about 20%, 25%, and 25%, respectively. The morphologies of the chars were also studied by SEM and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and the flame-retardant mechanism of POSS was mainly a condensed-phase flame retardant. The ceramic layer was formed by the enrichment of silicon on the char surface. When there are enough POSS nanoparticles, it can effectively protect the combustion of internal polymers.

Abstract
In recent years, the monolithic material has been developed increasingly in the high performance liquid phase field, and it could also be applied in the field of catalyst, as a monolithic catalyst carrier, since it has a large specific surface area, and could be customized based on the mould. The monolithic catalyst is characterized with many advantages such as low bed pressure, high physical efficiency and small amplification effect. The most impotant part refers to the preparation of copper-based catalyst. The impregnation method is used to produce CuO-ZnO monolithic catalyst and CuO-ZnO-ZrO2 monolithic catalyst with the prepared monolithic silica-alumina carrier. The fixed bed microreactor is used to investigate the effect of copper-based catalyst on the process in which carbon dioxide is used to produce methanol through hydrogenation. The metal salt is added into the sol-gel process, which could form the M-O-Si bond, thus make the metal-containing catalytic material obtain good mechanical strength, and make it possible to be introduced into the acidic center generally. The metal-containing catalytic material carrier also has macropores and mesopores. The presence of large pores could make the molecular mass transfer more effective, while the presence of mesopores could increase the specific surface area of the material. In this paper, the experimental study has been conducted on the production of methanol through hydrogenation of CO2 under different catalysts, to mainly investigate the effect of catalysts with different catalytic performance on the reaction.

Abstract
The development of flexible chemiresistors is imperative for real-time monitoring of air quality and/or human physical conditions without space constraints. However, critical challenges such as poor sensing characteristics, vulnerability under toxic chemicals, and weak reliability hinder their practical use. In this work, for the first time, an ultrasensitive flexible sensing platform is reported by assembling Pt loaded thin-layered (≈10 nm) SnO2 nanosheets (Pt-SnO2 NSs) based 2D sensing layers on Ag nanowires embedded glass-fabric reinforced vinyl-phenyl siloxane hybrid composite substrate (AgNW-GFRVPH film) as a heater. The thermally stable AgNW-GFRVPH film based heater is fabricated by free radical polymerization of vinyl groups in vinyl-phenyl oligosiloxane and phenyltris(dimethylvinylsiloxy)silane with Ag NW and glass-fabric, showing outstanding heat generation (≈200 °C), high dimensional stability (13 ppm °C-1), and good thermal stability (≈350 °C). The Pt-SnO2 NSs, which are synthesized by calcination of Sn precursor coated graphene oxide (GO) sheets and subsequent Pt functionalization, exhibit high mechanical flexibility and superior response (Rair/Rgas = 4.84) to 1 ppm level dimethyl sulfide. Taking these advantages, GO-templated oxide NSs combined with a highly stable AgNW-GFRVPH film heater exhibits the best dimethyl sulfide sensing performance compared to state-of-the-art flexible chemiresistors, enabling them as a superior flexible gas sensing platform.

Abstract
A high performance ladder-like structured methacrylate siloxane hybrid material (LMSH) was fabricated via simple hydrolytic sol⁻gel reaction, followed by free-radical polymerization. A structurally ordered siloxane backbone, the ladder-like structure, which is an essential factor for high performance, could be achieved by a short period of sol⁻gel reaction in only 4 h. This results in superior optical (Transmittance > 90% at 550 nm), thermal (T5 wt % decomposition > 400 ℃ ), mechanical properties(elastic recovery = 0.86, hardness = 0.6 GPa) compared to the random- and even commercialized cage-structured silsesquioxane, which also has ordered structure. It was investigated that the fabricated ladder-like structured MSH showed the highest overall density of organic/inorganic co-networks that are originated from highly ordered siloxane network, along with high conversion rate of polymerizable methacrylate groups. Our findings suggest a potential of the ladder-like structured MSH as a powerful alternative for the methacrylate polysilsesquioxane, which can be applied to thermally stable and flexible optical coatings, even with an easier and simpler preparation process.

Abstract
In-depth understanding of the thermal stability of polymer–clay nanocomposites requires the use of advanced time-resolved techniques combined with multivariate data analysis, as well as the preparation of layered nanofillers with well-defined composition. The layered double hydroxide (LDH) compounds Zn2Al(OH)6·nH2O, Zn2Al0.75Fe0.25(OH)6·nH2O, ZnCuAl(OH)6·nH2O, and ZnCuAl0.5Fe0.5(OH)6·nH2O were prepared, each designed to specifically identify the physical barrier, radical trapping, and char formation contributions to the thermal stability of the PMMA–LDH nanocomposites. The unique combination of conventional methods (TG, DSC, and Raman spectroscopy) and synchrotron radiation techniques (XAS and WAXS), applied during PMMA–LDH heating, revealed the synergetic (of iron) and antagonist (of copper) effects of the LDH layers transformations on the three main endothermic steps of mass loss of the polymer. The diffusion barrier effect was proved by the downshift of the PMMA thermal decomposition temperature caused by the decrease of the LDH edifice thermostability when divalent cations were substituted in the LDH (passing from PMMA–Zn2Al(OH)6·nH2O to PMMA–ZnCuAl(OH)6·nH2O). For PMMA–Zn2Al0.75Fe0.25(OH)6·nH2O, a cooperative contribution of iron reduction, stabilisation of layered edifice, and radical trapping effects was observed for the thermal stability of the nanocomposite. LDH also acted as a diffusion barrier to the efflux and evaporation of depolymerized species, favouring the charring which exerts an additional contribution to thermal stability of the PMMA–LDH nanocomposites. Thermal stability of polymer-double layered hydroxides nanocomposites: concurrent contributions from physical barrier, char formation and radical trapping.![]()

Abstract
It is demonstrated in this paper that silica nanoparticles coated with core/shell gold provide efficient thermal, optical, and morphological properties with respect to the cellulose-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) hybrid system. The one-step synthesis of a silica/gold nanocomposite is achieved with a simultaneous hydrolysis and reduction of gold chloride in the presence of formic acid, and the trimethoxysilane group acts as a silica precursor. The focus here comprises the synthesis of cellulose-POSS and silica/gold hybrid nanocomposites using the following two methods: (1) an in situ sol-gel process and (2) a polyvinyl alcohol/tetrakis (hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride process. Accordingly, the silica/gold core/shell nanoparticles are synthesized. The growth and attachment of the gold nanoparticles onto the functionalized surface of the silica at the nanometer scale is achieved via both the sol-gel and the tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride processes. The cellulose-POSS-silica/gold nanocomposites are characterized according to Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, Raman, X-ray diffraction, UV, photoluminescence, SEM, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, TEM, thermogravimetric, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analyses.

Abstract
Abstract
Epoxy resins are commonly used as thermosetting materials due to their excellent mechanical properties, high adhesion to many substrates and good heat and chemical resistances. This type of thermosets is intensively used in a wide range of fields, where they act as fiber-reinforced materials, general-purpose adhesives, high-performance coatings and encapsulating materials. These materials are formed by the chemical reaction of multifunctional epoxy monomers forming a polymer network produced through an irreversible way. In this article the improvement of the characteristics of epoxy thermosets using different hyperbranched poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) derivatives will be explained.

Abstract
Organic-inorganic nanocomposites composed of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and epoxy resin were prepared via self-assembly of an amphiphilic triblock copolymer bearing a poly(POSS) midblock in epoxy thermosets. First, this organic-inorganic amphiphilic triblock copolymer was synthesized via hydrosilylation of heptaphenylhydro POSS with an existing triblock copolymer containing a short polybutadiene midblock. It was found that this novel amphiphilic block copolymer can self-assemble into nanophases in epoxy thermosets. In the presence of preformed nanophases, the curing reaction was performed, and the organic-inorganic nanocomposites containing poly(POSS) microdomains were thus obtained. Compared with plain epoxy, the as-obtained thermosets exhibited enhanced surface hydrophobicity; the enhanced surface hydrophobicity is attributed to enrichment of the POSS component at the surface of the materials. Owing to the formation of poly(POSS) microdomains, the dielectric constants of the materials significantly reduced, whereas the dielectric loss remained almost unchanged.

Abstract
Ladder-like poly(vinylsilsesquioxanes)(LPVS) containing four parallel chains in the skeleton were synthesized by two steps: first, LPVS were prepared by a template sol–gel method from vinyltrichlorosilane (VTCS); then adjacent pendent vinyl groups were polymerized side by side along the LPVS chain. The resulting polymers (LPVS-2) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR, 29Si NMR, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and elemental analysis. Experimental results reveal that both LPVS and LPVS-2 have a highly regular, ladder-like framework, and that most of the vinyl groups have taken part in the side-by-side polymerization reaction. There is no evidence that crosslinking between macromolecular chains has occurred during this process. TGA data indicate that LPVS-2 (with pendent vinyl polymerized) possesses better thermal stability than that of LPVS. For the former, no weight loss can be detected until 500°C, which is attributed to its highly regular ladder-like framework consisting of a four-parallel-chain structure.
