Complex treatment of oily polluted waters by modified melamine foams: from colloidal emulsions to a free oil removal

This study deals with the efficient, low-cost, and scalable treatment of oily polluted waters including colloidal emulsions, oil-in-water mixtures, and free oil removal using melamine foams (MFs) modified by ferric chloride (FeCl3). Modified foams have superhydrophobic character due to the coordination of Fe3+ with free electron pairs on nitrogen and oxygen atoms within the melamine structure. The water contact angles (WCA) were 146° ± 2°, 148° ± 4°, 153° ± 2°, and 150° ± 4° for foams modified by the solutions with concentrations of 0.001 M, 0.005 M, 0.01 M, and 0.02 M, respectively. This modification enables the efficient treatment of various oil/water systems, including oil/water colloidal emulsions (99 vol% of the droplets have dimensions below 500 nm), oil-in-water mixtures up to 40 weight % of the oil component, and "free" oil removal as it was demonstrated in this study for the first time. The emulsions containing 100 ppm diesel oil (DO) were separated with 91.4% efficiency, and the mixtures containing 20 and 40 weight % DO were separated with 99.9% efficiency. Modified foams also quickly remove free DO from the water surface, absorbing 95 g/g DO, whereas water sorption was negligible. The separation of colloidal oil in water emulsions represents the key finding of this study as it indicates the applicability of the treated MFs for the treatment of emulsified industrial wastewater. The demulsification mechanism is based on multiple diffusion processes running at different time scales, including diffusion of the emulsion into the foam and diffusion of oil droplets within the foam, combined with parallel adsorption of oil droplets onto the solid skeleton of the foam. A multiplied usage of these foams for all these niche operations was also proven. The application of our current study with previous studies on modified MFs and polyurethane for water oil separation utilization is summarized in Table S1 ESI.

Enhancement of Adhesion Characteristics of Low-Density Polyethylene Using Atmospheric Plasma Initiated-Grafting of Polyethylene Glycol

The low-density polyethylene/aluminum (LDPE/Al) joint in Tetra Pak provides stability and strength to food packaging, ensures protection against outside moisture, and maintains the nutritional values and flavors of food without the need for additives in the food products. However, a poor adhesion of LDPE to Al, due to its non-polar surface, is a limiting factor and extra polymeric interlayers or surface treatment is required. Plasma-assisted grafting of the LDPE surface with different molecular weight compounds of polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used to improve LDPE/Al adhesion. It was found that this surface modification contributed to significantly improve the wettability of the LDPE surface, as was confirmed by contact angle measurements. The chemical composition changes after plasma treatment and modification process were observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). A surface morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Adhesion characteristics of LDPE/Al adhesive joints were analyzed by the peel tests. The most significant adhesion improvement of the PEG modified LDPE surface was achieved using 10.0 wt.% aqueous (6000 M) PEG solution, while the peel resistance increased by approximately 54 times in comparison with untreated LDPE.

Sulfobetaine-based polydisulfides with tunable upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in water alcohols mixture, depolymerization kinetics and surface wettability

HYPOTHESIS

Synthesis of a new family of polymers having a polydisulfide structure can be conducted from sulfobetaine-based derivative of natural (R)-lipoic acid. A polydisulfide backbone of polymer can be depolymerized by response to external stimuli and sulfobetaine pendant groups ensure the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behaviour temperatures that can be modulated according to the nature of the solvent and concentration.

EXPERIMENTS

Sulfobetaine-bearing polydisulfides were synthesized from dithiolane derivatives and then characterized. UCST behavior of the polymers in water and in mixtures containing different alcohols (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol) was investigated. The regeneration of monomers from the polymers in response to external stimuli was examined using UV-vis and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Tunable surface wettability were shown on the grafted polymers.

FINDINGS

Decreasing polarity and/or increasing alcohol percentage in the water mixtures induced an increase in the cloud points of the polymers in the solutions. Thermoresponsive behaviour were repeatable and fully reversible with negligible hysteresis from aggregate to unimer state. The regeneration of monomers by depolymerization was tunable by temperature and sunlight. A thickness dependence on surface wettability was observed on wafers covalently modified with polydisulfides. This is the first report of sulfobetaine-based polydisulfides showing tunable UCST behavior and surface wettability.

The Separation of Emulsified Water/Oil Mixtures through Adsorption on Plasma-Treated Polyethylene Powder

This paper addresses the preparation and characterization of efficient adsorbents for tertiary treatment (oil content below 100 ppm) of oil/water emulsions. Powdered low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was modified by radio-frequency plasma discharge and then used as a medium for the treatment of emulsified diesel oil/water mixtures in the concentration range from 75 ppm to 200 ppm. Plasma treatment significantly increased the wettability of the LDPE powder, which resulted in enhanced sorption capability of the oil component from emulsions in comparison to untreated powder. Emulsions formed from distilled water and commercial diesel oil (DO) with concentrations below 200 ppm were used as a model of oily polluted water. The emulsions were prepared using ultrasonication without surfactant. The droplet size was directly proportional to sonication time and ranged from 135 nm to 185 nm. A sonication time of 20 min was found to be sufficient to prepare stable emulsions with an average droplet size of approximately 150 nm. The sorption tests were realized in a batch system. The effect of contact time and initial oil concentrations were studied under standard atmospheric conditions at a stirring speed of 340 rpm with an adsorbent particle size of 500 microns. The efficiency of the plasma-treated LDPE powder in oil removal was found to be dependent on the initial oil concentration. It decreased from 96.7% to 79.5% as the initial oil concentration increased from 75 ppm to 200 ppm. The amount of adsorbed oil increased with increasing contact time. The fastest adsorption was observed during the first 30 min of treatment. The adsorption kinetics for emulsified oils onto sorbent followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

Dexamethasone and transdehydroandrosterone significantly reduce pulmonary epithelial cell injuries associated with mechanical ventilation

Many patients who suffer from pulmonary diseases cannot inflate their lungs normally, as they need mechanical ventilation (MV) to assist them. The stress associated with MV can damage the delicate epithelium in small airways and alveoli, which can cause complications resulting in ventilation-induced lung injuries (VILIs) in many cases, especially in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Therefore, efforts were directed to develop safe modes for MV. In our work, we propose a different approach to decrease injuries of epithelial cells (EpCs) upon MV. We alter EpCs’ cytoskeletal structure to increase their survival rate during airway reopening conditions associated with MV. We tested two anti-inflammatory drugs dexamethasone (DEX) and transdehydroandrosterone (DHEA) to alter the cytoskeleton. Cultured rat L2 alveolar EpCs were exposed to airway reopening conditions using a parallel-plate perfusion chamber. Cells were exposed to a single bubble propagation to simulate stresses associated with mechanical ventilation in both control and study groups. Cellular injury and cytoskeleton reorganization were assessed via fluorescence microscopy, whereas cell topography was studied via atomic force microscopy (AFM). Our results indicate that culturing cells in media, DEX solution, or DHEA solution did not lead to cell death (static cultures). Bubble flows caused significant cell injury. Preexposure to DEX or DHEA decreased cell death significantly. The AFM verified alteration of cell mechanics due to actin fiber depolymerization. These results suggest potential beneficial effects of DEX and DHEA for ARDS treatment for patients with COVID-19. They are also critical for VILIs and applicable to future clinical studies.

NEW & NOTEWORTHY Preexposure of cultured cells to either dexamethasone or transdehydroandrosterone significantly decreases cellular injuries associated with mechanical ventilation due to their ability to alter the cell mechanics. This is an alternative protective method against VILIs instead of common methods that rely on modification of mechanical ventilator modes.

Nitric Oxide Releasing Hydrogel Nanoparticles Decreases Epithelial Cell Injuries Associated With Airway Reopening

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is an acute inflammatory lung condition. It is characterized by disruption of gas exchange inside the alveoli, accumulation of protein edema, and an increase in lung stiffness. One major cause of ARDS is a lung infection, such as SARS-COV-2 infection. Lungs of ARDS patients need to be mechanically ventilated for airway reopening. Consequently, ventilation might damage delicate lung tissue leading to excess edema, known as ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI). Mortality of COVID-19 patients under VILI seems to be higher than non-COVID patients, necessitating effective preventative therapies. VILI occurs when small air bubbles form in the alveoli, injuring epithelial cells (EPC) due to shear stress. Nitric oxide (NO) inhalation was suggested as a therapy for ARDS, however, it was shown that it is not effective because of the extremely short half-life of NO. In this study, NO-releasing nanoparticles were produced and tested in an in vitro model, representing airways in the deep lung. Cellular injuries were quantified via fluorescent live/dead assay. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to assess cell morphology. qRT-PCR was performed to assess the expression of inflammatory markers, specifically IL6 and CCL2. ELISA was performed to assess IL6 and confirm qRT-PCR results at the protein level. Finally, ROS levels were assessed in all groups. Here, we show that NO delivery via nanoparticles enhanced EPC survival and recovery, AFM measurements revealed that NO exposure affect cell morphology, while qRT-PCR demonstrated a significant downregulation in IL6 and CCL2 expression when treating the cells to NO both before and after shear exposure. ELISA results for IL6 confirmed qRT-PCR data. ROS experiment results support our findings from previous experiments. These findings demonstrate that NO-releasing nanoparticles can be used as an effective delivery approach of NO to deep lung to prevent/reduce ARDS associated inflammation and cell injuries. This information is particularly useful to treat severe ARDS due to COVID-19 infection. These nanoparticles will be useful when clinically administrated to COVID-19 patients to reduce the symptoms originating from lung distress.

Thermally Conductive Polyethylene/Expanded Graphite Composites as Heat Transfer Surface: Mechanical, Thermo-Physical and Surface Behavior

Composites of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and expanded graphite (EG) are prepared for heat exchangers in multi-effect distillation (MED) desalination. At 50 wt.% EG loading, the thermal conductivity of HDPE was increased by 372%. Moreover, the surface wettability of the HDPE/EG composite was enhanced by corona and RF plasma treatment as demonstrated by the increase in surface free energy from 28.5 mJ/m² for untreated HDPE/EG to 55.5 and 54.5 mJ/m² for HDPE/EG treated by corona and RF plasma, respectively. This enhanced surface wettability was retained over a long time with only a 9% and 18% decrease in RF and corona plasma-treated samples' surface energy after two months. The viscoelastic moduli and the complex viscosity profiles indicated that EG content dictates the optimum processing technique. At loading below 30 wt.%, the extrusion process is preferred, while above 30 wt.% loading, injection molding is preferred. The plasma treatment also improved the HDPE/EG composite overall heat transfer coefficient with an overall heat transfer coefficient of the composite reaching about 98% that of stainless steel. Moreover, the plasma-treated composite exhibited superior resistance to crystallization fouling in both CaSO₄ solution and artificial seawater compared to untreated composites and stainless-steel surfaces.

Separation of Water/Oil Emulsions by an Electrospun Copolyamide Mat Covered with a 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene

Purpose: Copolyamide 6,10 (coPA) electrospun mats were covered with multilayered (ML) and single-layered (SL) MXene (Ti₃C₂T_x) as a membrane for the separation of water/vegetable oil emulsions. Methods: Prepared membranes were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), profilometry, the contact angle measurements of various liquids in air, and the underwater contact angle of vegetable oil. The separation efficiency was evaluated by measuring the UV transmittance of stock solutions compared to the UV transmittance of the filtrate. Results: The MXene coating onto coPA mats led to changes in the permeability, hydrophilicity, and roughness of the membranes and enhanced the separation efficiency of the water/vegetable oil emulsions containing 10, 100, and 1000 ppm of sunflower vegetable oil. It was found that membranes were highly oleophobic (>124°) under water, unlike in air, where the membranes showed high oleophobicity (<5°). The separation efficiency of water/oil emulsions for both types of covered membranes reached over 99%, with a surface coverage of 3.2 mg/cm² Ti₃C₂T_x (for ML-Ti₃C₂T_x) and 2.9 mg/cm² (for SL-Ti₃C₂T_x). Conclusions: The separation efficiency was greater than 98% for membranes covered with 2.65 mg/cm² of ML-Ti₃C₂T_x, whereas the separation efficiency for membranes containing 1.89 and 0.77 mg/cm² was less than 90% for all studied emulsion concentrations.

Probing the fibrillation of lysozyme by nanoscale-infrared spectroscopy

Amyloid fibrillation is the root cause of several neuro as well as non-neurological disorders. Understanding the molecular basis of amyloid aggregate formation is crucial for deciphering various neurodegenerative diseases. In our study, we have examined the lysozyme fibrillation process using nano-infrared spectroscopy (nanoIR). NanoIR enabled us to investigate both structural and chemical characteristics of lysozyme fibrillar species concurrently. The spectroscopic results indicate that lysozyme transformed into a fibrillar structure having mainly parallel β-sheets, with almost no antiparallel β-sheets. Features such as protein stiffness have a good correlation with obtained secondary structural information showing the state of the protein within the fibrillation state. The structural and chemical details were compared with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and circular dichroism (CD). We have utilized nanoIR and measured infrared spectra to characterize lysozyme amyloid fibril structures in terms of morphology, molecular structure, secondary structure content, stability, and size of the cross-β core. We have shown that the use of nanoIR can complement other biophysical studies to analyze the aggregation process and is particularly useful for studying proteins involved in aggregation to help in designing molecules against amyloid aggregation. Specifically, the nanoIR spectra afford higher resolution information and a characteristic fingerprint for determining states of aggregation.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Chemically Synthesized Carbon Nanorods with Dual Polarized Emission

We realized the synthesis of carbon nanorods-monodisperse colloidal particles with a length of 50 nm and a width of 20 nm-which can be considered an addition to the family of light-emitting carbon-based nanostructures. Their anisotropic shape is determined by the use of the surfactant aminopropylisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, and their optical properties originate from domains of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons incorporated within an inorganic framework. The nanorods show dual polarized emission with a quantum yield of 15-20% and emission anisotropy of ∼0.3, which changes from blue (460 nm) to yellow (565 nm) depending on the excitation wavelength. These carbon nanorods expand the range of light-emitting carbon nanomaterials available for optoelectronic and biolabeling applications.

Preparation of Progressive Antibacterial LDPE Surface via Active Biomolecule Deposition Approach

The use of polymers in all aspects of daily life is increasing considerably, so there is high demand for polymers with specific properties. Polymers with antibacterial properties are highly needed in the food and medical industries. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is widely used in various industries, especially in food packaging, because it has suitable mechanical and safety properties. Nevertheless, the hydrophobicity of its surface makes it vulnerable to microbial attack and culturing. To enhance antimicrobial activity, a progressive surface modification of LDPE using the antimicrobial agent grafting process was applied. LDPE was first exposed to nonthermal radio-frequency (RF) plasma treatment to activate its surface. This led to the creation of reactive species on the LDPE surface, resulting in the ability to graft antibacterial agents, such as ascorbic acid (ASA), commonly known as vitamin C. ASA is a well-known antioxidant that is used as a food preservative, is essential to biological systems, and is found to be reactive against a number of microorganisms and bacteria. The antimicrobial effect of grafted LDPE with ASA was tested against two strong kinds of bacteria, namely, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), with positive results. Surface analyses were performed thoroughly using contact angle measurements and peel tests to measure the wettability or surface free energy and adhesion properties after each modification step. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to analyze the surface morphology or topography changes of LDPE caused by plasma treatment and ASA grafting. Surface chemistry was studied by measuring the functional groups and elements introduced to the surface after plasma treatment and ASA grafting, using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These results showed wettability, adhesion, and roughness changes in the LDPE surface after plasma treatment, as well as after ASA grafting. This is a positive indicator of the ability of ASA to be grafted onto polymeric materials using plasma pretreatment, resulting in enhanced antibacterial activity.

Piezoelastic PVDF/TPU Nanofibrous Composite Membrane: Fabrication and Characterization

Poly (vinylidene fluoride) nanofibers (PVDF NFs) have been extensively used in energy harvesting applications due to their promising piezoresponse characteristics. However, the mechanical properties of the generated fibers are still lacking. Therefore, we are presenting in this work a promising improvement in the elasticity properties of PVDF nanofibrous membrane through thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) additives. Morphological, physical, and mechanical analyses were performed for membranes developed from different blend ratios. Then, the impact of added weight ratio of TPU on the piezoelectric response of the formed nanofibrous composite membranes was studied. The piezoelectric characteristics were studied through impulse loading testing where the electric voltage had been detected under applied mass weights. Piezoelectric characteristics were investigated further through a pressure mode test the developed nanofibrous composite membranes were found to be mechanically deformed under applied electric potential. This work introduces promising high elastic piezoelectric materials that can be used in a wide variety of applications including energy harvesting, wearable electronics, self-cleaning filters, and motion/vibration sensors.

Electrically Conductive, Transparent Polymeric Nanocomposites Modified by 2D Ti3C2Tx (MXene)

The electrically conductive, transparent, and flexible self-standing thin nanocomposite films based on copolyamide matrix (coPA:Vestamelt X1010) modified with 2D Ti3C2Tx (MXene) nanosheets were prepared by casting and their electrical, mechanical and optical properties and then, were investigated. The percolation threshold of the MXene filler within the coPA matrix was found to be 0.05 vol. %, and the highest determined electrical conductivity was 1.4 × 10-2 S·cm-1 for the composite filled with 5 wt. % (1.8 vol. %) of MXene. The electrical conductivity of the as-prepared MXene was 9.1 S·cm-1, and the electrical conductivity of the MAX phase (the precursor for MXene preparation) was 172 S·cm-1. The transparency of the prepared composite films exceeded 75%, even for samples containing 5 wt. % of MXene, as confirmed by UV spectroscopy. The dynamic mechanical analysis confirmed the improved mechanical properties, such as the storage modulus, which improved with the increasing MXene content. Moreover, all the composite films were very flexible and did not break under repeated twisting. The combination of the relatively high electrical conductivity of the composites filled with low filler content, an appropriate transparency, and good mechanical properties make these materials promising for applications in flexible electronics.

Fabrication of polyaniline–graphene/polystyrene nanocomposites for flexible gas sensors

This research work presents the fabrication of polyaniline (PANI) and graphene–polyaniline (graphene–PANI) nanocomposite-coated polystyrene (PS) nanofibre mats, as well as their application in flexible and highly sensitive gas sensors. The surface morphology of the flexible films is investigated using a number of techniques. The profilometry studies confirmed that the electrospun fibres are evenly distributed over a large surface area and there was no visible difference between coated and uncoated fibres. The SEM morphology studies revealed that a nanocomposite consisting of 10 nm PANI nanofibres and graphene forms a uniform coating around 3 μm diameter PS fiber. AFM showed differences in the 3D surface topography between plain PS nanofibres and coated ones, which showed an increased roughness. Moreover, conductive AFM has indicated an increase in the electrical current distribution from picoamperes to nanoamperes of the PS samples coated with PANI and graphene–PANI because of the applied voltage to the AFM tip that contacted the sample surface. The chemical properties of all the samples are analysed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), which revealed the presence of chemical interactions between the nanocomposites and the polymeric backbones. The TGA study indicated that graphene–PANI coated fibres have the highest thermal stability compared to the pure fibres. The addition of the nanocomposite layer to the PS fibre significantly increased the electrical conductivity. Therefore, nanocomposite-coated flexible membranes are used to fabricate carbon dioxide gas sensors (sensing range: 20–100 ppm). Due to the higher surface area of the nanocomposite coated fibre the availability of adsorption area is also higher, which leads to an increase in sensitivity to carbon dioxide gas. The sensitivity increases with the increase in gas concentration. The average response time of the sensor is calculated to be 65 seconds, with good and uniform repeatability.

Piezoresponse, Mechanical, and Electrical Characteristics of Synthetic Spider Silk Nanofibers

This work presents electrospun nanofibers from synthetic spider silk protein, and their application as both a mechanical vibration and humidity sensor. Spider silk solution was synthesized from minor ampullate silk protein (MaSp) and then electrospun into nanofibers with a mean diameter of less than 100 nm. Then, mechanical vibrations were detected through piezoelectric characteristics analysis using a piezo force microscope and a dynamic mechanical analyzer with a voltage probe. The piezoelectric coefficient (d₃₃) was determined to be 3.62 pC/N. During humidity sensing, both mechanical and electric resistance properties of spider silk nanofibers were evaluated at varying high-level humidity, beyond a relative humidity of 70%. The mechanical characterizations of the nanofibers show promising results, with Young’s modulus and maximum strain of up to 4.32 MPa and 40.90%, respectively. One more interesting feature is the electric resistivity of the spider silk nanofibers, which were observed to be decaying with humidity over time, showing a cyclic effect in both the absence and presence of humidity due to the cyclic shrinkage/expansion of the protein chains. The synthesized nanocomposite can be useful for further biomedical applications, such as nerve cell regrowth and drug delivery.

2D Ti3C2Tx (MXene)-reinforced polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers with enhanced mechanical and electrical properties

Novel 2D Ti3C2Tx (MXene)-reinforced polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers have been successfully fabricated by an electrospinning technique. The high aspect ratio, hydrophilic surfaces, and metallic conductivity of delaminated MXene nanosheet render it promising nanofiller for high performance nanocomposites. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were used to improve the mechanical properties of the nanofibers. The obtained electrospun nanofibers had diameter from 174 to 194 nm depending on ratio between PVA, CNC and MXene. Dynamic mechanical analysis demonstrated an increase in the elastic modulus from 392 MPa for neat PVA fibers to 855 MPa for fibers containing CNC and MXene at 25°C. Moreover, PVA nanofibers containing 0.14 wt. % Ti3C2Tx exhibited dc conductivity of 0.8 mS/cm conductivity which is superior compared to similar composites prepared using methods other than electrospinning. Improved mechanical and electrical characteristics of the Ti3C2Tx /CNC/PVA composites make them viable materials for high performance energy applications.

Simple, Reversible, and Fast Modulation in Superwettability, Gradient, and Adsorption by Counterion Exchange on Self-Assembled Monolayer

A simple fabrication method for preparation of surfaces able to switch from superhydrophobic to superhydrophilic state in a reversible and fast way is described. A self-assembled monolayer (SAM) consisting of quaternary ammonium group with aliphatic tail bearing terminal thiol functionality was created on gold nano/microstructured and gold planar surfaces, respectively. A rough nano/microstructured surface was prepared by galvanic reaction on a silicon wafer. The reversible counterion exchange on the rough surface resulted in a switchable contact angle between <5° and 151°. The prewetted rough surface with Cl(-) as a counterion possesses a superoleophobic underwater character. The kinetics of counterion exchanges suggests a long hydration process and strong electron ion pairing between quaternary ammonium group and perfluorooctanoate counterion. Moreover, a wettability gradient from superhydrophobic to superhydrophilic can be formed on the modified rough gold surface in a robust and simple way by passive incubation of the substrate in a counterion solution and controlled by ionic strength. Furthermore, adsorption of gold nanoparticles to modified plain gold surface can be controlled to a high extent by counterions present on the SAM layer.

Anti-bacterial treatment of polyethylene by cold plasma for medical purposes

Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most widely used polymers in many industrial applications. Biomedical uses seem to be attractive, with increasing interest. However, PE it prone to infections and its additional surface treatment is indispensable. An increase in resistance to infections can be achieved by treating PE surfaces with substances containing antibacterial groups such as triclosan (5-Chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenol) and chlorhexidine (1,1'-Hexamethylenebis[5-(4-chlorophenyl)biguanide]). This work has examined the impact of selected antibacterial substances immobilized on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) via polyacrylic acid (PAA) grafted on LDPE by low-temperature barrier discharge plasma. This LDPE surface treatment led to inhibition of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus adhesion; the first causes intestinal disease, peritonitis, mastitis, pneumonia, septicemia, the latter is the reason for wound and urinary tract infections.

Polysaccharides coatings on medical-grade PVC: a probe into surface characteristics and the extent of bacterial adhesion

Medical-grade polyvinyl chloride was coated by polysaccharides through a novel physicochemical approach. An initial surface activation was performed foremost via diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharge plasma in air at ambient temperature and pressure. Then, radical graft copolymerization of acrylic acid through grafting-from pathway was directed to render a well-defined brush of high density, and finally a chitosan monolayer and chitosan/pectin alternating multilayer were bound onto the functionalized surfaces. Surface characteristics were systematically investigated using several probe techniques. In vitro bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation assays indicated that a single chitosan layer was incapable of hindering the adhesion of a Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strain, while up to 30% reduction was achieved by the chitosan/pectin layered assembly. On the other hand, chitosan and chitosan/pectin multilayer could retard Escherichia coli adhesion by 50% and 20%, respectively. Furthermore, plasma treated and graft copolymerized samples were also found effective to diminish the degree of adherence of Escherichia coli.
