Abstract
N-Monosubstituted ethylenediamine derivatives with three methylene-tethered aromatic groups ((ArCH2)2NCH2CH2N(R)CH2Ar (R-ArArAr), where Ar = 2-pyridyl, 2-quinolyl, 1- and 3-isoquinolyl and 2-quinoxalyl; R = methyl, benzyl and phenyl) were utilized as pentadentate ligands for copper(II) complexation. Fifteen mononuclear copper(II) complexes were synthesized and exhibit differences in cyclic voltammetry, absorption spectroscopy and solid state geometries, depending on the aromatic group (Ar) and the substituent on the aliphatic nitrogen atom (R) of the ligand. Compared with the pyridine and isoquinoline complexes, the quinoline and quinoxaline derivatives exhibit distinct Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox potentials and d-d transition absorption wavelengths. Similarly, the phenyl derivatives are different from their methyl and benzyl counterparts. These characteristic trends are discussed in relation to the square-pyramidal/trigonal-bipyramidal structure of the complexes which is perturbed by the location of quinoline moieties in the penta- or hexacoordinate complexes with Jahn-Teller distortion. In addition, the results are compared to the copper(II) complexes with pyridine/quinoline mixed ligands, Ph-Ar1Ar2Ar3 ((Ar1CH2)(Ar2CH2)NCH2CH2N(Ph)CH2Ar3).

Abstract
(Pseudo)halogenated quinones react smoothly with chiral amines, amino alcohols, and amino acids toward push-pull conjugates with optical sensing and switching applications. The chiroptically active conjugates serve as redox switches between two reversibly interconverting states with remarkably different UV and CD signatures. Addition of sodium borohydride generates a hydroquinone derivative that is quantitatively re-oxidized to the original quinone upon exposure to air. This chiroptical quinone/hydroquinone redox switch system combines several attractive features such as simple set-up, use of inexpensive chemicals, short response time, and thermal and photochemical stability. A conceptually new sensing approach that is based on integrated chiroptical amplification and redox switching enables on-the-fly deconvolution of otherwise overlapping CD spectra and is used for quantitative er analysis of challenging samples containing constitutional isomers in varying enantiomeric compositions.

Abstract
Four types of tris-chelate ruthenium complexes bearing acetylacetonato (acac) and tropolonato (trop) ligands were synthesized and optically resolved into Δ and Λ isomers: [Ru(acac)3] (Ru-0), [Ru(acac)2(trop)] (Ru-1), [Ru(acac)(trop)2] (Ru-2), and [Ru(trop)3] (Ru-3). Chiral HPLC chromatograms, electronic circular dichroism (ECD), and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) of the four ruthenium complexes were systematically investigated. As a result, the absolute configurations of the newly prepared enantiomeric complexes Ru-2 and Ru-3 were determined. For the case of Ru-2, its absolute configuration was also confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The ECD changes upon chemical oxidation were further investigated for the four complexes. An ECD change in enantiomeric Ru-1 was observed upon oxidation, but the oxidized species soon returned to the neutral state within a few minutes. Enantiomers of Ru-3 also showed explicit ECD changes upon oxidation. Further, the lifetime of the oxidized state was the longest among the four investigated complexes, whereas they racemized in solution at room temperature. In contrast, the enantiomers of heteroleptic complexes (Ru-1 and Ru-2) concurrently exhibited ECD changes, relatively long lifetime of the oxidized state, and nil or quite slow racemization behavior. The coexistence of acac and trop ligands was key to making the competing factors compatible in the resultant ruthenium complexes.

Abstract
Three gold(i) tripodal complexes containing the tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPA) ligand coordinated to Au-PR3 moieties (PR3 = 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphatricyclo[3.3.1.13.7]decane, PTA (1), 3,7-diacetyl-1,3,7-triaza-5-phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane, DAPTA (2) and triphenylphosphane (3)) were prepared together with a cage-like structure containing triphosphane 1,1,1-tris(diphenylphosphinomethyl)ethane (4). The luminescence of these complexes has been studied and they show a red shift upon the formation of heterometallic complexes by reaction with Zn(NO3)2, CuCl and [Cu(CH3CN)4]BF4. The different coordination motifs of the Zn2+ and Cu+ heterometallic species and the resulting changes in the recorded absorption, emission and NMR spectra were analysed and supported by TD-DFT calculations.

Abstract
An array of silver complexes supported by nitrogen-donor ligands catalyze the transformation of C═C and C-H bonds to valuable C-N bonds via nitrene transfer. The ability to achieve high chemoselectivity and site selectivity in an amination event requires an understanding of both the solid- and solution-state behavior of these catalysts. X-ray structural characterizations were helpful in determining ligand features that promote the formation of monomeric versus dimeric complexes. Variable-temperature 1H and DOSY NMR experiments were especially useful for understanding how the ligand identity influences the nuclearity, coordination number, and fluxional behavior of silver(I) complexes in solution. These insights are valuable for developing improved ligand designs.

Abstract
Nitrogen-containing pyridine and quinoline are outstanding platforms on which excellent ionophores and sensors for metal ions can be built. Steric and stereochemical effects can be used to modulate the affinity and selectivity of such ligands toward different metal ions on the coordination chemistry front. On the signal transduction front, such effects can also be used to modulate optical responses of these ligands in metal sensing systems. In this review, steric modulation of achiral ligands and stereochemical modulation in chiral ligands, especially ionophores and sensors for zinc, copper, silver, and mercury, are examined using published structural and spectral data. Although it might be more challenging to construct chiral ligands than achiral ones, isotropic and anisotropic absorption signals from a single chiroptical fluorescent sensor provide not only detection but also differentiation of multiple analytes with high selectivity.

Abstract
Three new tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine-based ligands possessing phenylethynyl units have been prepared using Sonogashira couplings and substitution reactions. Copper(ii) complexes of those tetradentate ligands have also been synthesized. Solid-state structures of the six new compounds have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Examination of the molecular structures of the ligands revealed the expected triangular geometries with virtually undeformed carbon-carbon triple bonds. While the tertiary nitrogen of the free ligands seem to be prevented from participation in supramolecular non-covalent interactions by the pyridyl hydrogen at the 3-position, the pyridyl nitrogens play a crucial role in the packing mode of the crystal structure. The nitrogens form weak hydrogen bonds, varied in length between 2.32 and 2.66 Å, with the pyridyl hydrogen of its neighbouring molecule. The [NH-C] contacts enforce one-dimensional columnar assemblies on ligands that organize into wall-like structures, which in turn assemble into three-dimensional structures through CH-π interactions. Structural analyses of Cu(ii) complexes of the ligands revealed propeller-like structures caused by steric crowding of three pyridine ligands. The copper complexes of the ligands having three phenylethynyl substituents showed a remarkably deformed carbon-carbon triple bond enforced by a steric effect of the three phenyl groups. Most significantly, a total of seventy non-covalent interactions, classified into twelve types of hydrogen-involving short contacts, were identified in this study. The phenylethynyl substituent participated in forty-two interactions as a hydrogen bond acceptor, and its role was more distinctive in the crystal structures of the Cu(ii) complexes.

Abstract
A helically chiral copper complex is used as a switchable asymmetric catalyst capable of delivering either enantiomer of a Michael addition reaction.
A ligand capable of adopting two pseudo-enantiomeric helically chiral states when bound to copper has been applied as an asymmetric catalyst in the Michael addition of malonate substrates to nitrostyrenes. The absolute configuration of the helically chiral ligand is inverted upon oxidation/reduction of the copper center. In this way, the handedness of the Michael addition product (R/S) can be selected based on the handedness of the catalyst (Λ/Δ). Exciton coupled circular dichroism (ECCD) was used to identify which of the two pseudo-enantiomeric forms the catalyst adopted after reduction/oxidation, with additional support from X-ray crystallographic data. The synthesis of the ligand was achieved in five steps with an overall 61% yield. Enantiomeric excesses of the Michael addition products of up to 72% (S) and 70% (R) were obtained in acetonitrile. The ability to choose the handedness of the product based on the chiral state of the catalyst has been demonstrated with several different solvents, bases, nitrostyrene/malonate substrates, and prochiral malonate substrates. A combination of molecular modelling, crystal structure and kinetic data suggest that one urea moiety of the catalyst ligand likely binds the nitrostyrene substrate while blocking the Re face of the nitrostyrene in the transition state.

Abstract
Two tripodal fluorescent probes Zn⋅L(1,2) have been synthesised, and their anion-binding capabilities were examined by using fluorescence spectroscopy. Probe Zn⋅L(1) allows the selective and ratiometric detection of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) at physiological pH, even in the presence of several competing anions, such as ADP, phosphate and bicarbonate. The probe was applied to the real-time monitoring of the apyrase-catalysed hydrolysis of ATP, in a medium that mimics an extracellular fluid.

Abstract
The redox properties of copper pyridylpyrimidine complexes, which undergo linkage isomerism based on pyrimidine ring rotation, were compared under different coordination environments. A newly synthesized compound, [Cu(Mepypm)(L(Mes))]BF4 (1·BF4, Mepypm = 4-methyl-2-(2'-pyridyl)pyrimidine, L(Mes) = 2,9-dimesityl-1,10-phenanthroline) was compared with previously reported complexes of [Cu(MepmMepy)(L(Mes))]BF4 (2·BF4, MepmMepy = 4-methyl-2-(6'-methyl-2'-pyridyl)pyrimidine), Cu(Mepypm)(DPEphos)]BF4 (3·BF4, DPEphos = bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether), [Cu(Mepypm)(L(Anth))]BF4 (4·BF4, L(Anth) = 2,9-bis(9-anthryl)-1,10-phenanthroline), and [Cu(Mepypm)(L(Macro))]BF4 (5·BF4). Isomer ratios, isomerization dynamics, redox properties, and photoelectron conversion functions varied with the coordination structure. Methyl substituents on the 6-position of the pyridine moiety increased steric repulsion and contributed to quicker rotation, enhanced photoluminescence, and increased photodriven rotational isomerization.

Abstract
Our recent achievements relating to photofunctional molecules are addressed. Section 1 discloses a new concept of photoisomerization. Pyridylpyrimidine-copper complexes undergo a ring inversion that can be modulated by the redox state of the copper center. In combination with an intermolecular photoelectron transfer (PET) initiated by the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transition of the Cu(I) state, we realize photonic regulation of the ring inversion. Section 2 reports on the first examples of heteroleptic bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(II) complexes. Conventional homoleptic bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(II) complexes suffered from low fluorescence quantum yields, whereas the heteroleptic ones feature bright fluorescence even in polar solvents. Section 3 describes our new findings on Pechmann dye, which was first synthesized in 1882. New synthetic procedures for Pechmann dye using dimethyl bis(arylethynyl)fumarate as a starting material gives rise to its new structural isomer. We also demonstrate potentiality of a donor-acceptor-donor type of Pechmann dye in organic electronics.

Abstract
The pH-induced switching process of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)pyridine and 2-(2-methoxyphenyl)pyridine derivatives was investigated with the help of UV spectroscopy. Quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G* level of theory were performed to show that in the case of 2-(2-methoxyphenyl)-3-methylpyridine and 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-methylpyridine the rotation during the switching process proceeds unidirectionally at the molecular level. If a 2-(2-methoxyphenyl)pyridine derivative is fixed to a chiral cyclopeptidic scaffold, a unidirectional progress of the rotation is achieved macroscopically.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of new compounds 4-35 based on structural modifications of different moieties of previously described lead UCM-2550. The new nonpiperazine derivatives, representing second-generation agonists, were assessed for binding affinity, selectivity, and functional activity at the 5-HT(1A) receptor (5-HT(1A)R). Computational β(2)-based homology models of the ligand-receptor complexes were used to explain the observed structure-affinity relationships. Selected candidates were also evaluated for their potential in vitro and in vivo neuroprotective properties. Interestingly, compound 26 (2-{6-[(3,4-dihydro-2H-chromen-2-ylmethyl)amino]hexyl}tetrahydro-1H-pyrrolo[1,2-c]imidazole-1,3(2H)-dione) has been characterized as a high-affinity and potent 5-HT(1A)R agonist (K(i) = 5.9 nM, EC(50) = 21.8 nM) and exhibits neuroprotective effect in neurotoxicity assays in primary cell cultures from rat hippocampus and in the MCAO model of focal cerebral ischemia in rats.

Abstract
Two multimode Hg(II) sensors, L-MethBQA and L-CysBQA, were obtained by fusing methionine or S-methyl cysteine, into a bis-quinolyl amine-based chiral podand scaffold. Quinolyl groups serve as the fluorophore and possess nitrogen lone pairs capable of chelating metal ions. On exposure to Hg(2+) or Zn(2+), these sensors show signal enhancement in fluorescence. However, Cu(2+) quenches their fluorescence in 30:70 acetontrile/water. L-CysBQA complexes with Hg(2+), producing an exciton-coupled circular dichroism spectrum with the opposite sign to the one that is produced by Cu(2+) or Zn(2+) complexation. L-CysBQA binds Hg(2+) more strongly than Zn(2+) and is shown to differentiate Hg(2+) from other metal ions, such as Zn(2+), Cu(2+), Ni(2+), and Pb(2+), exceptionally well. The synergistic use of relatively soft sulfur, quinoline-based chiral ligands and chiroptically enhanced fluorescence detection results in high sensitivity and selectivity for Hg(2+).

Abstract
A tetradentate tripodal ligand containing a chiral center and three different coordinating arms was designed and synthesized. Its complexation properties with Zn(II) and Cu(I) were studied by NMR and optical spectroscopy. NMR experiments demonstrated the formation of two diastereomers, indicating the stabilization of the central tertiary amine configuration by metal coordination. The inversion of pyramidalization of the central tertiary amine of the ligand was found to be highly dependent upon metal ion, solvent, and temperature. Dynamic NMR measurements were used to estimate the energy of activation required for nitrogen atom inversion. Finally, absorption and circular dichroism measurements confirmed the expectation that metal complexes of the ligand gave rise to circular dichroism but that such spectra were not characterized by exciton-coupling, in contrast to previously described ligands containing two identical arms with strong chromophores.

Abstract
Metal complexes of tris((6-phenyl-2-pyridyl)methyl)amine (2) have hydrophobic cavities that potentially accommodate small molecules. However, the utility of this attractive motif has been hampered by the poor solubility of such complexes in many common solvents. In this study, two tripodal ligands (3, tris-[6-(3,4,5-trimethoxy-phenyl)-pyridin-2-ylmethyl]-amine, and 4, tris((6-(3,4,5-tris(2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)phenyl)pyridin-2-yl)methyl)amine) derived from 2 were prepared with enhanced solubility in organic and aqueous solvents. The X-ray crystallographic analyses of selected ligands and complexes revealed that the hydrophobic cavities inside the zinc complexes were retained after derivatization. Fluorescence, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and potentiometric titration studies, which were enabled by the improved solubility, were performed to investigate the binding properties of the soluble ligands (3 and 4) with metal ions such as Zn(2+) and Cu(2+). When saturating quantities of Zn(2+) ions are added to ligand 3 in acetonitrile, the fluorescence emission maximum exhibits a pronounced red shift of approximately 80 nm (from 376 to 457 nm) and is enhanced by a factor of >100 when measured at 520 nm. The fluorescence properties of the Zn(2+) ion-coordinated ligands in the Zn(3) complex are consistent with a charge-transfer character in the excited state, with possible contributions from a planarization of the pyridyl-trimethoxyphenyl groups in the excited state, and from excitonic interactions.

Abstract
The tripodal system 4, in which urea fragments are appended to the three terminal amine nitrogen atoms of a tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) subunit, includes a Cu(II) ion and two anions X-, according to a cascade mechanism through three well defined stepwise equilibria in a DMSO solution. The first anion X- (halide, N3-, NCS-, NO2-, H2PO4-) seeks the Cu(II) centre coordinated by the tren moiety; the second anion X- interacts with the trisurea cavity, but this occurs only if the stronger H-bond acceptors, such as N3- and H2PO4-, are used. Binding of the second X- ion is favoured by the preorganising effect exerted by the metal and disfavoured by the steric and electrostatic repulsions between the anions. Under the appropriate conditions, heterodinuclear complexes of formula [Cu(II)(4)(Cl)(H2PO4)] can be obtained in solution, in which Cl- is bound to the metal centre and H2PO4- interacts with the trisurea compartment.
