New group 2 chemistry: a multiple barium-nitrogen bond in the CsNBa molecule

Transition-Metal Chemistry of Alkaline-Earth Elements: The Trisbenzene Complexes M(Bz)3 (M=Sr, Ba)

We report the synthesis and spectroscopic identification of the trisbenzene complexes of strontium and barium M(Bz)3 (M=Sr, Ba) in low-temperature Ne matrix. Both complexes are characterized by a D3 symmetric structure involving three equivalent η6 -bound benzene ligands and a closed-shell singlet electronic ground state. The analysis of the electronic structure shows that the complexes exhibit metal-ligand bonds that are typical for transition metal compounds. The chemical bonds can be explained in terms of weak donation from the π MOs of benzene ligands into the vacant (n-1)d AOs of M and strong backdonation from the occupied (n-1)d AO of M into vacant π* MOs of benzene ligands. The metals in these 20-electron complexes have 18 effective valence electrons, and, thus, fulfill the 18-electron rule if only the metal-ligand bonding electrons are counted. The results suggest that the heavier alkaline earth atoms exhibit the full bonding scenario of transition metals.

Experimental and theoretical investigations of the thermodynamic stability of Ba-c(60) and K-C(60) compound clusters

A novel experimental set-up was used to study superstable (magic) Ba-C(60) and K-C(60) compound clusters. The most stable systems observed cannot be rationalized by simple electronic or by geometrical shell filling arguments. Annealing the clusters past the temperature necessary for the fragmentation of the initial metastable clusters formed at the source reveals information about their thermodynamic stability. Higher temperatures yield larger species, suggesting that similar experiments may be used to rationally produce nanoscale clusters with highly desirable properties. Density functional calculations reveal ionic (K, Ba) and covalent (Ba) bonding between C(60) and the metal atoms. The entropic contribution to the Gibbs free energy is shown to be essential in determining absolute and relative cluster stabilities. In particular, we demonstrate that at higher temperatures the entropy favors the formation of larger clusters. A simple criterion which may be used to determine the absolute and relative stabilities of general multicomponent clusters is proposed.

Magic alkali-fullerene compound clusters of extreme thermal stability

The thermal stability of free pure C60-, as well as C60-alkali, and -alkaline-earth metal compound clusters is investigated. We find that small (C60)m-clusters (m<or=6) decay at comparatively low temperatures below 400 K, as a consequence of weak intermolecular van der Waals interaction. Adding barium or potassium to the clusters dramatically increases the decay temperatures for "magic" configurations of (C60)mBa(2m-1) and (C60)mK(2m), which reach values as high as 1780 K. Contrary to common belief, the superstable compound clusters are not characterized by filled geometrical or electronic shells. Density functional calculations show that the delicate interplay of ionic (K, Ba) and covalent (Ba) interaction between C60 and the metal atoms, on the one hand, and entropic contributions to the Gibbs free energy, on the other hand, determine the unusual stability.

Competition between Metal-Amido and Metal-Imido Chemistries in the Alkaline Earth Series: An Experimental and Theoretical Study of BaNH

The pure rotational spectrum of BaNH in its X(1)Sigma(+) ground electronic state has been recorded using millimeter/submillimeter direct absorption methods; data for the deuterium and barium 137 isotopomers have been measured as well. The molecules were produced by the reaction of ammonia or ND(3) and barium vapor in the presence of a dc discharge. Transitions arising from the ground vibrational state and the excited vibrational bending (01(1)0) and heavy atom stretching (100) modes were measured. The rotational spectrum indicates a linear structure, with B(0)(BaNH) = 7984.549 MHz and B(0)(BaND) = 7060.446 MHz. An r(m)((1)) structure has been determined, yielding r(BaN) = 2.077 +/- 0.002 Angstroms and r(NH) = 1.0116 +/- 0.0006 Angstroms. Density functional calculations using an extensive Slater-type basis set with inclusion of scalar relativistic effects gives geometrical parameters and vibrational frequencies for BaNH in excellent agreement with those determined by experiment. The molecular orbital and natural bond order analyses of the BaNH wave function show Ba-N pi bonds formed by electron donation from the formally filled N 2p orbitals of the imido group to the empty Ba 5d orbitals. The multiple bonding between Ba and N stabilizes the linear geometry and, along with the relative ease of oxidation of the Ba atom, favors formation of the metal-imido species over that of the metal-amido species that have been found from similar studies with Mg, Ca, and Sr atoms in this group.

Triple-Bond Covalent Radii

A system of additive covalent radii is proposed for sigma(2) pi(4) triple bonds involving elements from Be to E 112 (eka-mercury). Borderline cases with weak multiple bonding are included. Only the elements in Group 1, the elements Zn-Hg in Group 12 and Ne in Group 18 are then totally excluded. Gaps are left at late actinides and some lanthanides. The standard deviation for the 324 included data points is 3.2 pm.

N4 Ring as a Square Planar Ligand in Novel MN4 Species

Ab initio (MP2) and density functional theory (DFT) methods are used to examine a series of MN4 compounds, where M is an alkaline-earth cation (Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+), and N4(2-) is a six--electron ring. All pyramidal structures except MgN4 are the most energetically favored for all singlet MN4 systems considered here. For MgN4, the CS structure with dicoordinated Mg out of the N4 ring plane is the most stable of all. Among these systems, the pyramidal CaN4, SrN4, BaN4 and the planar C(S) structure containing dicoordinated Ba are stable as singlet molecules due to their significant isomerization or dissociation barriers (21.3-94.1 kcal/mol). Structural, natural bond orbital (NBO), and molecular orbital (MO) analyses indicate that the bonding in the BaN4 system has a larger covalent character as compared with other MN4 systems. In addition, substantial d character is found in the bonding of the MN4 (M = Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+) species.
