Synthesis, solid-state crystal structure, and reactivity of a monomeric copper(I) anilido complex

Photoredox/Copper-Catalyzed One-Pot Aminoalkylation/Cyclization of Alkenes with Primary Amines to Synthesize Polysubstituted γ-Lactams

Visible-light-driven chemical transformation has emerged as a powerful tool for the synthesis of γ-lactams. However, during this transformation, the α-bromoimides need to be pre-prepared. Herein, we report a photoreodox/copper-catalyzed one-pot three-component reaction of alkenes with primary amines for the construction of γ-lactams. In this transformation, the orthoquinones were generated via a photocatalytic pathway, followed by attack by Cu-amido complexes and intramolecular cyclization to give the γ-lactams. This method represents a simple synthetic route displaying broad functional group tolerance, including substrates bearing alcohols, ketones, heterocycles, esters, halides, alkynes, nitriles, ethers, etc.

Copper-Catalyzed Hydroamination: Enantioselective Addition of Pyrazoles to Cyclopropenes

Chiral N-cyclopropyl pyrazoles and structurally related heterocycles are prepared using an earth-abundant copper catalyst under mild reaction conditions with high regio-, diastereo-, and enantiocontrol. The observed N2:N1 regioselectivity favors the more hindered nitrogen of the pyrazole. Experimental and DFT studies support a unique mechanism that features a five-centered aminocupration.

Enantioconvergent Cu-Catalyzed Radical C-N Coupling of Racemic Secondary Alkyl Halides to Access α-Chiral Primary Amines

α-Chiral alkyl primary amines are virtually universal synthetic precursors for all other α-chiral N-containing compounds ubiquitous in biological, pharmaceutical, and material sciences. The enantioselective amination of common alkyl halides with ammonia is appealing for potential rapid access to α-chiral primary amines, but has hitherto remained rare due to the multifaceted difficulties in using ammonia and the underdeveloped C(sp³)-N coupling. Here we demonstrate sulfoximines as excellent ammonia surrogates for enantioconvergent radical C-N coupling with diverse racemic secondary alkyl halides (>60 examples) by copper catalysis under mild thermal conditions. The reaction efficiently provides highly enantioenriched N-alkyl sulfoximines (up to 99% yield and >99% ee) featuring secondary benzyl, propargyl, α-carbonyl alkyl, and α-cyano alkyl stereocenters. In addition, we have converted the masked α-chiral primary amines thus obtained to various synthetic building blocks, ligands, and drugs possessing α-chiral N-functionalities, such as carbamate, carboxylamide, secondary and tertiary amine, and oxazoline, with commonly seen α-substitution patterns. These results shine light on the potential of enantioconvergent radical cross-coupling as a general chiral carbon-heteroatom formation strategy.

Simple Synthetic Routes to Carbene-M-Amido (M=Cu, Ag, Au) Complexes for Luminescence and Photocatalysis Applications

The development of novel and operationally simple synthetic routes to carbene‐metal‐amido (CMA) complexes of copper, silver and gold relevant for photonic applications are reported. A mild base and sustainable solvents allow all reactions to be conducted in air and at room temperature, leading to high yields of the targeted compounds even on multigram scales. The effect of various mild bases on the N−H metallation was studied in silico and experimentally, while a mechanochemical, solvent‐free synthetic approach was also developed. Our photophysical studies on [M(NHC)(Cbz)] (Cbz=carbazolyl) indicate that the occurrence of fluorescent or phosphorescent states is determined primarily by the metal, providing control over the excited state properties. Consequently, we demonstrate the potential of the new CMAs beyond luminescence applications by employing a selected CMA as a photocatalyst. The exemplified synthetic ease is expected to accelerate the applications of CMAs in photocatalysis and materials chemistry.

Recent advances in well-defined, late transition metal complexes that make and/or break C-N, C-O and C-S bonds

Chemical transformations that result in either the formation or cleavage of carbon-heteroatom bonds are among the most important processes in the chemical sciences. Herein, we present a review on the reactivity of well-defined, late-transition metal complexes that result in the making and breaking of C-N, C-O and C-S bonds via fundamental organometallic reactions, i.e. oxidative addition, reductive elimination, insertion and elimination reactions. When appropriate, emphasis is placed on structural and spectroscopic characterization techniques, as well as mechanistic data.

Unusual borane addition to conjugated dienylphosphanes under frustrated Lewis pair conditions

Dimesitylphosphinoisoprene 9a reacts with a series of R-B(C6F5)2 boron Lewis acids by isomerization and subsequent 1,4-P/B addition to give the heterocyclic phosphonium/borate zwitterionic products 13. Subsequent hydride abstraction from the isoprenyl derived methyl group by trityl cation proceeds with elimination of the R-B(C6F5)2 reagent to give the heterocyclic phosphonium system 20.

Copper-induced ammonia N–H functionalization

The Tp^MsCu core has been found to bind ammonia as well as to promote stoichiometric or catalytic modification of the ammonia N–H bond.

Copper catalysed Ullmann type chemistry: from mechanistic aspects to modern development

Cu-catalysed arylation reactions devoted to the formation of C-C and C-heteroatom bonds (Ullmann-type couplings) have acquired great importance in the last decade. This review discusses the history and development of coupling reactions between aryl halides and various classes of nucleophiles, focusing mostly on the different mechanisms proposed through the years. Selected mechanistic investigations are treated more in depth than others. For example, evidence in favour or against radical mechanisms is discussed. Cu(I) and Cu(III) complexes involved in the Ullmann reaction and N/O selectivity in aminoalcohol arylation are discussed. A separate section has been dedicated to the synthesis of heterocyclic rings through intramolecular couplings. Finally, recent developments in green chemistry for these reactions, such as reactions in aqueous media and heterogeneous catalysis, have also been reviewed.

N-[Amino(imino)methyl]uronium tetrafluoroborate

In the title compound, C(2)H(7)N(4)O(+)·BF(4) (-), inter-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds connect the cations into chains parallel to the c axis, with graph-set motif C(4). These chains are in turn connected into a three-dimensional network by inter-molecular N-H⋯F hydrogen bonds. The B-F distances distances in the anion are not equal.

Catalytic organometallic reactions of ammonia

Until recently, ammonia had rarely succumbed to catalytic transformations with homogeneous catalysts, and the development of such reactions that are selective for the formation of single products under mild conditions has encountered numerous challenges. However, recently developed catalysts have allowed several classes of reactions to create products with nitrogen-containing functional groups from ammonia. These reactions include hydroaminomethylation, reductive amination, alkylation, allylic substitution, hydroamination, and cross-coupling. This Minireview describes examples of these processes and the factors that control catalyst activity and selectivity.

Cu(I)-amido complexes in the Ullmann reaction: reactions of Cu(I)-amido complexes with iodoarenes with and without autocatalysis by CuI

A series of Cu(I)-amido complexes both lacking ancillary ligands and containing 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) as ancillary ligand have been prepared. These complexes react with iodoarenes to form arylamine products, and this reactivity is consistent with the intermediacy of such complexes in catalytic Ullmann amination reactions. The stoichiometric reactions of the Cu(I)-amido complexes with iodoarenes are autocatalytic, with the free CuI generated during the reaction serving as the catalyst. Such autocatalytic behavior was not observed for reactions of iodoarenes with copper(I) amidates, imidates, or phenoxides. The selectivity of these complexes for two sterically distinct aryl halides under various conditions imply that the autocatalytic reaction proceeds by forming highly reactive [CuNPh(2)](n) lacking phen. Reactions with radical probes imply that the reactions of phen-ligated Cu(I)-amido complexes with iodoarenes occur without the intermediacy of aryl radicals. Density functional theory calculations on the oxidative addition of iodoarenes to Cu(I) species are consistent with faster reactions of iodoarenes with CuNPh(2) species lacking phen in DMSO than reactions of iodoarenes with LCuNPh(2) in which L = phen. The free-energy barrier computed for the reaction of PhI with (DMSO)CuNPh(2) was 21.8 kcal/mol, while that for the reaction of PhI with (phen)CuNPh(2) was 33.4 kcal/mol.

Orthogonal Pd- and Cu-based catalyst systems for C- and N-arylation of oxindoles

In the cross-coupling reactions of unprotected oxindoles with aryl halides, Pd- and Cu-based catalyst systems displayed orthogonal chemoselectivity. A Pd-dialkylbiarylphosphine-based catalyst system chemoselectively arylated oxindole at the 3 position, while arylation occurred exclusively at the nitrogen using a Cu-diamine-based catalyst system. Computational examination of the relevant L1Pd(Ar)(oxindolate) and diamine-Cu(oxindolate) species was performed to gain mechanistic insight into the controlling features of the observed chemoselectivity.

Facile assembly of a Cu9 amido complex: a new tripodal ligand design that promotes transition metal cluster formation

A tripodal amido ligand with a central non-chelating phosphorus donor allows for the facile assembly of a pentane soluble organometallic copper cluster with a central copper atom surrounded by a nonplanar chain of eight copper atoms and two terminal amido-copper bonds.

The Role of Chelating Diamine Ligands in the Goldberg Reaction: A Kinetic Study on the Copper-Catalyzed Amidation of Aryl Iodides

The mechanistic details of the Cu-catalyzed amidation of aryl iodides are presented. The kinetic data suggest that the diamine ligand prevents multiple ligation of the amide. The formation of an amidocuprate species external to the catalytic cycle helped to rationalize the dependence on diamine concentration and the inverse dependence on amide concentration at low diamine concentrations. The intermediacy of a Cu(I) amidate was established through both its chemical and kinetic competency.
