Status and Challenges of Blue OLEDs: A Review

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have outperformed conventional display technologies in smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and televisions while gradually growing to cover a sizable fraction of the solid-state lighting industry. Blue emission is a crucial chromatic component for realizing high-quality red, green, blue, and yellow (RGBY) and RGB white display technologies and solid-state lighting sources. For consumer products with desirable lifetimes and efficiency, deep blue emissions with much higher power efficiency and operation time are necessary prerequisites. This article reviews over 700 papers covering various factors, namely, the crucial role of blue emission for full-color displays and solid-state lighting, the performance status of blue OLEDs, and the systematic development of fluorescent, phosphorescent, and thermally activated delayed fluorescence blue emitters. In addition, various challenges concerning deep blue efficiency, lifetime, and approaches to realizing deeper blue emission and higher efficacy for blue OLED devices are also described.

The Methylene Spacer Matters: The Structural and Luminescent Effects of Positional Isomerism of n-Methylpyridyltriazole Carboxylate Semi-Rigid Ligands in the Structure of Zn(II) Based Coordination Polymers

Two Zn(II) coordination polymers (CPs) based on n-methylpyridyltriazole carboxylate semi-rigid organic ligands (n-MPTC), with n = 3 (L1) and 4 (L2), have been prepared at the water n-butanol interphase by reacting Zn(NO₃)₂·4H₂O with NaL1 and NaL2. This allows us to systematically investigate the influence of the isomeric positional effect on their structures. The organic ligands were obtained by saponification from their respective ester precursors ethyl-5-methyl-1-(pyridin-3-ylmethyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylate (P1) and ethyl-5-methyl-1-(pyridin-4-ylmethyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylate (P2), resulting in their corresponding sodium salt forms, 3-MPTC, and 4-MPTC. The structure of the Zn(II) CPs determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that both CPs have 2D supramolecular hydrogen bond networks. The 2D supramolecular network of [Zn(L1)]n (1) is built up by hydrogen bond interactions between oxygen and hydrogen atoms between neighboring n-methylpyridyltriazole molecules, whereas in [Zn(L2)·4H₂O]n (2) the water molecules link 1D polymeric chains forming a 2D supramolecular aggregate. The structures of 1 and 2 clearly show that the isomeric effect in the semi-rigid ligands plays a vital role in constructing the Zn(II) coordination polymers, helped by the presence of the methylene spacer group, in the final structural conformation. The structures of 1 and 2 significantly affect their luminescent properties. Thus, while 2 shows strong emission at room temperature centered at 367 nm, the emission of 1 is quenched substantially.

Carbon Nanodots as Electron Transport Materials in Organic Light Emitting Diodes and Solar Cells

Charge injection and transport interlayers play a crucial role in many classes of optoelectronics, including organic and perovskite ones. Here, we demonstrate the beneficial role of carbon nanodots, both pristine and nitrogen-functionalized, as electron transport materials in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and organic solar cells (OSCs). Pristine (referred to as C-dots) and nitrogen-functionalized (referred to as NC-dots) carbon dots are systematically studied regarding their properties by using cyclic voltammetry, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy in order to reveal their energetic alignment and possible interaction with the organic semiconductor's emissive layer. Atomic force microscopy unravels the ultra-thin nature of the interlayers. They are next applied as interlayers between an Al metal cathode and a conventional green-yellow copolymer-in particular, (poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-alt-co-(1,4-benzo-{2,1',3}-thiadiazole)], F8BT)-used as an emissive layer in fluorescent OLEDs. Electrical measurements indicate that both the C-dot- and NC-dot-based OLED devices present significant improvements in their current and luminescent characteristics, mainly due to a decrease in electron injection barrier. Both C-dots and NC-dots are also used as cathode interfacial layers in OSCs with an inverted architecture. An increase of nearly 10% in power conversion efficiency (PCE) for the devices using the C-dots and NC-dots compared to the reference one is achieved. The application of low-cost solution-processed materials in OLEDs and OSCs may contribute to their wide implementation in large-area applications.

Zinc(II) Complexes with Triplet Charge-Transfer Excited States Enabling Energy-Transfer Catalysis, Photoinduced Electron Transfer, and Upconversion

Many Cu^I complexes have luminescent triplet charge-transfer excited states with diverse applications in photophysics and photochemistry, but for isoelectronic Zn^II compounds, this behavior is much less common, and they typically only show ligand-based fluorescence from singlet π-π* states. We report two closely related tetrahedral Zn^II compounds, in which intersystem crossing occurs with appreciable quantum yields and leads to the population of triplet excited states with intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT) character. In addition to showing fluorescence from their initially excited ¹ILCT states, these new compounds therefore undergo triplet-triplet energy transfer (TTET) from their ³ILCT states and consequently can act as sensitizers for photo-isomerization reactions and triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion from the blue to the ultraviolet spectral range. The photoactive ³ILCT state furthermore facilitates photoinduced electron transfer. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that mononuclear Zn^II compounds with photophysical and photochemical properties reminiscent of well-known Cu^I complexes are accessible with suitable ligands and that they are potentially amenable to many different applications. Our insights seem relevant in the greater context of obtaining photoactive compounds based on abundant transition metals, complementing well-known precious-metal-based luminophores and photosensitizers.

Modern History of Organic Conductors: An Overview

This short review article provides the reader with a summary of the history of organic conductors. To retain a neutral and objective point of view regarding the history, background, novelty, and details of each research subject within this field, a thousand references have been cited with full titles and arranged in chronological order. Among the research conducted over ~70 years, topics from the last two decades are discussed in more detail than the rest. Unlike other papers in this issue, this review will help readers to understand the origin of each topic within the field of organic conductors and how they have evolved. Due to the advancements achieved over these 70 years, the field is nearing new horizons. As history is often a reflection of the future, this review is expected to show the future directions of this research field.

Seven new metal-organic frameworks assembled from semi-rigid polycarboxylate and auxiliary N-donor ligands: syntheses, structures and properties

Seven new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, [Zn₂(L¹)(H₂O)₃]_n (1), [Zn₂(L¹)(dib)(H₂O)₂]_n (2), {[Zn₂(L¹)(4,4'-bipy)(H₂O)₂]·H₂O}_n (3), [Cd₂(L¹)(1,10-phen)]_n (4), [Ni₂(HL¹)(4,4'-bipy)(μ₃-OH)(μ₂-H₂O)]_n (5), {[Co₄(L¹)(4,4'-bibp)₃]·(4,4'-bibp)₃}_n (6), and [Co₂(L²)(4,4'-bibp)₂(H₂O)]_n (7), where H₄L¹ and H₄L² are semi-rigid 3-(3,5-dicarboxylphenoxy)phthalic acid and 4-(3,5-dicarboxylphenoxy)phthalic acid, respectively, and 4,4'-bipy is 4,4'-bipyridine, dib is 1,4-bis(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene, 1,10-phen is 1,10-phenanthroline and 4,4'-bipb is 1,4-bis(pyridin-4-yl)benzene, have been prepared under solvothermal conditions with Zn^II, Cd^II, Co^II and Ni^II ions in the presence of auxiliary N-donor ligands. The crystal structures and photoluminescence and magnetic properties of these compounds have been investigated. Compound 1 displays a 3,4,6-connected two-dimensional (2D) topology with a Schläfli symbol of (4².5)₂(4³.5².7)(4⁵.5⁶.6³)₂, and the 2D structure was further assembled to form a three-dimensional (3D) framework by intermolecular O-H...O hydrogen bonds. Compound 2 features a novel 3,3,4-connected structure and the point symbol is (4.10²)(4.6.8⁴)(6².8). Compound 3 exhibits a 3,4,6-connected 3-nodal net having a 3,4,6 T53 type topology, with the point symbol (4.6²)₂(4².6⁴)₂(4².6⁸.8².10³). Compound 4 shows a 2D→3D supramolecular structure formed by π-π stacking interactions. Compound 5 possesses a 3D framework with a tfz-d net topology. Compounds 6 and 7 are constructed from the same auxiliary ligand and metal salt at the same temperature, but with different main ligands and exhibiting different topologies. Compound 6 presents a 3D 4,6-connected topological network with a Schläfli symbol of (3.4⁴.6)(3².4⁴.5⁶.6³), while compound 7 has a 3D topological network with a Schläfli symbol of (4¹².6¹⁶). Magnetic analyses indicate that compounds 5 and 7 show weak antiferromagnetic interactions.

Efficient white polymer light-emitting diodes (WPLEDs) based on covalent-grafting of into PVK

Thanks to the straightforward white light of single grafting-type polymers based on earth-abundant Zn(ii)-complexes, producing cost-effective flexible WOLEDs/WPLEDs with good device performance remains a formidable challenge. Herein, by using the polymer Poly(NVK-co-[Zn2(MP)3(OAc)]) with excellent physical properties for single-layer WPLEDs, record-high efficiencies (η ^Max _c = 13.0 cd A^-1, η ^Max _p = 6.1 lm W^-1 and η ^Max _EQE = 9.2%) and low (ca. 25%) efficiency roll-off compared to previous organo-Zn²⁺-based WOLEDs/WPLEDs are realized. This finding renders single Zn(ii)-complex-grafted polymers a new route to low-cost and large-area flexible WPLEDs for potential full-colour flat displays.

Direct Oxygenation of C-H Bonds through Photoredox and Palladium Catalysis

This report presents the oxygenation of C-H bonds via the merger of photocatalysis and Pd catalysis. Herein, we describe the utilization of a photocatalyst to oxidize an organopalladium(II) intermediate to high-valent Pd^III or Pd^IV intermediates, which promotes the formation of C-O bonds. The demonstrated method works efficiently with various directing groups, such as oxime ether and benzothiazole. The applicability of this direct C-O bond formation method is shown by synthesizing several metal complexes of 2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)phenol that can be used in organic light-emitting diodes and pharmaceuticals.

Luminescent Zn(ii) and Cd(ii) complexes with chiral 2,2′-bipyridine ligands bearing natural monoterpene groups: synthesis, speciation in solution and photophysics

Coordination of chiral ligands containing a 2,2′-bipyridine moiety and natural terpene (+)-limonene or (+)-3-carene groups to zinc(ii) and cadmium(ii) leads to excitation wavelength dependent emission.

Synthesis and Antimicrobial Activity of 2-Trifluoroacetonylbenzoxazole Ligands and Their Metal Complexes

Three 2-fluoroacetonylbenzoxazole ligands 1a-c and their new Zn(II) complexes 2a-c have been synthesized. In addition, syntheses of new metal [Mg(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Pd(II), and Ag(I)] complexes from 1a have been also described. The molecular and crystal structures of six metal complexes 2b and 2d-h were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Their antibacterial activities against six Gram-positive and six Gram-negative bacteria were evaluated by minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC), which were compared with those of appropriate antibiotics and silver nitrate. The results indicate that some metal compounds have more antibacterial effects in comparison with free ligands and have preferred antibacterial activities that may have potential pharmaceutical applications. Noticeably, the Ag(I) complex 2h exhibited low MIC value of 0.7 µM against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which was even superior to the reference drug, Norfloxacin with that of 1.5 µM. Against P. aeruginosa, 2h is bacteriostatic, exerts the cell surface damage observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and is less likely to develop resistance. The new 2h has been found to display effective antimicrobial activity against a series of bacteria.

Photochromism of 2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl) Benzothiazole (HBT) and Its Derivatives: A Theoretical Study

Hydroxyphenyl benzothiazole (HBT), is a well-known organic system based on its special characteristic of the excited state hydrogen transfer (ESHT) following photoexcitation. However, the capability of this system regarding photochromism and photoswitching has not been addressed yet. In this study, we have investigated this issue by the aim of the MP2, CC2, ADC(2), and CASSCF theoretical methods. Also, we have considered several electron withdrawing groups and investigated their effects on the photophysical characteristics and spectroscopic properties of the enol and keto tautomers of the titled system. It has been predicted that the main HBT and its considered substitutions fulfill the essential characteristics required for photochromism. Also, substitution is an effective idea for tuning the photophysical nature of HBT and its similar systems. Our theoretical results verify that different substitutions alter the UV absorption of HBT systems from 330 to 351 nm and also the corresponding absorption wavelength of the γ-forms of 526-545 nm.

Crystal structure of bis-[2-(benzo-thia-zol-2-yl)phenolato-κ(2) N,O]copper(II)

In the title complex, [Cu(C13H8NOS)2], the Cu(II) atom is coordinated by two N atoms and two O atoms from two bidentate benzo-thia-zolphenolate ligands, forming a distorted tetra-hedral geometry [dihedral angle between two N-Cu-O planes: 45.1 (2)°]. The dihedral angles between the benzo-thia-zole ring systems and the phenol rings are 4.1 (4) and 5.8 (4)°, indicating an almost planar geometry. Weak intra- and inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds are observed. In the crystal, weak π-π inter-actions between aromatic and thia-zole rings [centroid-centroid distances = 3.626 (3) and 3.873 (3) Å] link the mol-ecules into a two-dimensional supra-molecular network along the bc plane.

Luminescent zinc(ii) and copper(i) complexes for high-performance solution-processed monochromic and white organic light-emitting devices

The synthesis and spectroscopic properties of luminescent tetranuclear zinc(ii) complexes of substituted 7-azaindoles and a series of luminescent copper(i) complexes containing 7,8-bis(diphenylphosphino)-7,8-dicarba-nido-undecaborate ligand are described. These complexes are stable towards air and moisture. Thin film samples of the luminescent copper(i) complexes in 2,6-dicarbazolo-1,5-pyridine and zinc(ii) complexes in poly(methyl methacrylate) showed emission quantum yields of up to 0.60 (for Cu-3) and 0.96 (for Zn-1), respectively. Their photophysical properties were examined by ultrafast time-resolved emission spectroscopy, temperature dependent emission lifetime measurements and density functional theory calculations. Monochromic blue and orange solution-processed OLEDs with these Zn(ii) and Cu(i) complexes as light-emitting dopants have been fabricated, respectively. Maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5.55% and Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.16, 0.19) were accomplished with the optimized Zn-1-OLED while these values were, respectively 15.64% and (0.48, 0.51) for the optimized Cu-3-OLED. Solution-processed white OLEDs having maximum EQE of 6.88%, CIE coordinates of (0.42, 0.44), and colour rendering index of 81 were fabricated by using these luminescent Zn(ii) and Cu(i) complexes as blue and orange light-emitting dopant materials, respectively.
