Abstract
The reactions of amide functionalized bisphosphine, o-Ph2PC6H4C-(O)N(H)C6H4PPh2-o (1) (BalaHariPhos), with copper salts is described. Treatment of 1 with CuX in a 1:1 molar ratio yielded chelate complexes of the type [CuX{(o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)N(H)C6H4PPh2-o)}-κ2-P,P] (X = Cl, 2; Br, 3; and I, 4), which on subsequent treatment with KOtBu resulted in a dimeric complex [Cu(o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)(N)C6H4PPh2-o)]2 (5). Interestingly, complexes 2-4 showed weak N-H···Cu interactions. These weak H-bonding interactions are studied in detail both experimentally and computationally. Also, CuI complexes 2-5 were employed in the oxidative dehydrogenative carboxylation (ODC) of unactivated cycloalkanes in the presence of carboxylic acids to form the corresponding allylic esters. Among complexes 2-5, halide-free dimeric CuI complex 5 showed excellent metal-ligand cooperativity in the oxidative dehydrogenative carboxylation (ODC) in the presence of carboxylic acids to form the corresponding allylic esters through C(sp3)-H bond activation of unactivated cycloalkanes. Mechanistic details of the catalytic process were established by isolating the precatalyst [Cu{(o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)(NH)C6H4PPh2-o)-κ2-P,P}(OOCPh)] (6) and fully characterized by mass spectrometry, NMR data, and single-crystal X-ray analysis. Density functional theory-based calculations further provided a quantitative understanding of the energetics of a series of H atom transfer steps occurring in the catalytic cycle.

Abstract
A flexible macrocyclic ligand with two tridentate {CNC} compartments can host two Cu ions in reversibly interconvertible states, CuI CuI (1) and mixed-valent Cu1.5 Cu1.5 (2). They were characterized by XRD and multiple spectroscopic methods, including EPR, UV/Vis absorption and MCD, in combination with TD-DFT and CASSCF calculations. 2 features a short Cu⋅⋅⋅Cu distance (≈2.5 Å; compared to ≈4.0 Å in 1) and a very high delocalization energy of 13 000 cm-1 , comparable to the mixed-valent state of the biological CuA site. Electron self-exchange between 1 and 2 is rapid despite large structural reorganization, and is proposed to proceed via a sequential mechanism involving an active conformer of 1, viz. 1'; the latter has been characterized by XRD. Such electron transfer (ET) process is reminiscent of the conformationally gated ET proposed for biological systems. This redox couple is a unique pair of flexible dicopper complexes, achieving fast electron self-exchange closely related to the function of the CuA site.

Abstract
Dicopper complexes templated by dinucleating, pacman dipyrrin ligand scaffolds (Mesdmx, tBudmx: dimethylxanthine-bridged, cofacial bis-dipyrrin) were synthesized by deprotonation/metalation with mesitylcopper (CuMes; Mes: mesityl) or by transmetalation with cuprous precursors from the corresponding deprotonated ligand. Neutral imide complexes (Rdmx)Cu2(μ2-NAr) (R: Mes, tBu; Ar: 4-MeOC6H4, 3,5-(F3C)2C6H3) were synthesized by treatment of the corresponding dicuprous complexes with aryl azides. While one-electron reduction of (Mesdmx)Cu2(μ2-N(C6H4OMe)) with potassium graphite initiates an intramolecular, benzylic C-H amination at room temperature, chemical reduction of (tBudmx)Cu2(μ2-NAr) leads to isolable [(tBudmx)Cu2(μ2-NAr)]- product salts. The electronic structures of the thermally robust [(tBudmx)Cu2(μ2-NAr)]0/- complexes were assessed by variable-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (Cu L2,3/K-edge, N K-edge), optical spectroscopy, and DFT/CASSCF calculations. These data indicate that the formally Class IIIA mixed valence complexes of the type [(Rdmx)Cu2(μ2-NAr)]- feature significant NAr-localized spin following reduction from electronic population of the [Cu2(μ2-NAr)] π* manifold, contrasting previous methods for engendering iminyl character through chemical oxidation. The reactivity of the isolable imido and iminyl complexes are examined for prototypical radical-promoted reactivity (e.g., nitrene transfer and H-atom abstraction), where the divergent reactivity is rationalized by the relative degree of N-radical character afforded from different aryl substituents.

Abstract
The enzymes nitrous oxide reductase (N2OR) and cytochrome c oxidase (COX) are constituents of important biological processes. N2OR is the terminal reductase in a respiratory chain converting N2O to N2 in denitrifying bacteria; COX is the terminal oxidase of the aerobic respiratory chain of certain bacteria and eukaryotic organisms transforming O2 to H2O accompanied by proton pumping. Different spectroscopies including magnetic resonance techniques, were applied to show that N2OR has a mixed-valent Cys-bridged [Cu1.5+(CyS)2Cu1.5+] copper site, and that such a binuclear center, called CuA, does also exist in COX. A sequence motif shared between the CuA center of N2OR and the subunit II of COX raises the issue of a putative evolutionary relationship of the two enzymes. The suggestion of a binuclear CuA in COX, with one unpaired electron delocalized between two equivalent Cu nuclei, was difficult to accept originally, even though regarded as a clever solution to many experimental observations. This minireview in honor of Helmut Sigel traces several of the critical steps forward in understanding the nature of CuA in N2OR and COX, and discusses its unique electronic features to some extent including the contributions made by the development of methodology and the discovery of a novel multi-copper enzyme. Left: X-band (9.130 GHz) and C-band (4.530 GHz, 1st harmonic display of experimental spectrum) EPR spectra of bovine heart cytochrome c oxidase, recorded at 20K. Abstract
We report an easily prepared bis(thioether) amine ligand, SMeNHSMe, along with the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of the paramagnetic iron(II) bis(amido) complex, [Fe(κ3-SMeNSMe)2] (1). Binding of the two different thioethers to Fe generates both five- and six-membered rings with Fe-S bonds in the five-membered rings (av 2.54 Å) being significantly shorter than those in the six-membered rings (av 2.71 Å), suggesting hemilability of the latter thioethers. Consistent with this hypothesis, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and computational (TD-DFT) studies indicate that 1 in solution contains a five-coordinate component [Fe(κ3-SMeNSMe)(κ2-SMeNSMe)] (2). This ligand hemilability was demonstrated further by reactivity studies of 1 with 2,2'-bipyridine, 1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane, and 2,6-dimethylphenyl isonitrile to afford iron(II) complexes [L2Fe(κ2-SMeNSMe)2] (3-5). Addition of a Brønsted acid, HNTf2, to 1 produces the paramagnetic, iron(II) amine-amido cation, [Fe(κ3-SMeNSMe)(κ3-SMeNHSMe)](NTf2) (6; Tf = SO2CF3). Cation 6 readily undergoes amine ligand substitution by triphos, affording the 16e- complex [Fe(κ2-SMeNSMe)(κ3-triphos)](NTf2) (7; triphos = bis(2-diphenylphosphinoethyl)phenylphosphine). These complexes are characterized by elemental analysis; 1H NMR, Mössbauer, IR, and UV-vis spectroscopy; and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Preliminary results of amine-borane dehydrogenation catalysis show complex 7 to be a selective and particularly robust precatalyst.

Abstract
A set of new copper(i) complexes is synthesized and characterized using a labile PNP pincer ligand (PNP = N,N'-bis(diphenylphosphine)-2,6-diaminopyridine). A homoleptic Cu(i) complex [Cu(PNP-κP1:κN1)2]+, (1), was prepared, and taking advantage of the uncoordinated phosphorus atoms in (1), reaction with a second Cu(i) atom bearing secondary ligands (PPh3, phen or dmp) allows the formation of new complexes: a bimetallic helicate [Cu(PNP)2(phen)]2+, (2), a mononuclear pincer complex [CuI(PNP)(PPh3)]+, (3), and a heteroleptic complex [CuI(PNP)(dmp)]+, (4). All complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography, NMR (VT-NMR for (1) and (4)), cyclic-voltammetry, and steady-state and time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy. The fluxional behavior in (1) was studied by 31P VT-NMR, where an Ea value of 47.42 kJ mol-1 was calculated for the intramolecular alternating coordination of -PPh2 moieties in PNP to the metal atom. This set of compounds reveals the versatility of the PNP ligand when added to the coordinating properties of Cu(i). The four complexes exhibit emission in solution and complexes (2)-(4) display intense luminescence in the solid state. The oscillographic traces showing the decay of the luminescence were fitted to biexponential functions with time constants: 8.0 μs > τem,1 > 0.37 μs and 50 μs >τem, 2 > 2.2 μs for complexes (2), (3) and (4), respectively. Radiative relaxation is associated with electronic transitions in both the ligand PNP and metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT).

Abstract
The synthesis of discrete, cationic binuclear μ-aryl dicopper complexes [Cu2(μ-η(1):η(1)-Ar)DPFN]X (Ar = C6H5, 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3, and C6F5; DPFN = 2,7-bis(fluoro-di(2-pyridyl)methyl)-1,8-naphthyridine; X = BAr4(-) and NTf2(-); Tf = SO2CF3) was achieved by treatment of a dicopper complex [Cu2(μ-η(1):η(1)-NCCH3)DPFN]X2 (X = PF6(-) and NTf2(-)) with tetraarylborates. Structural characterization revealed symmetrically bridging aryl groups, and (1)H NMR spectroscopy evidenced the same structure in solution at 24 °C. Electrochemical investigation of the resulting arylcopper complexes uncovered reversible redox events that led to the synthesis and isolation of a rare mixed-valence organocopper complex [Cu2(μ-η(1):η(1)-Ph)DPFN](NTf2)2 in high yield. The solid-state structure of the mixed-valence μ-phenyl complex exhibits inequivalent copper centers, despite a short Cu···Cu distance. Electronic and variable-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy of the mixed-valence μ-phenyl complex suggest that the degree of spin localization is temperature-dependent, with a high degree of spin localization observed at lower temperatures. Electronic structure calculations agree with the experimental results and suggest that the spin is localized almost entirely on one metal center.

Abstract
The new tridentate ligand, S(Me)N(H)S = 2-(2-methylthiophenyl)benzothiazolidine, prepared in a single step from commercial precursors in excellent yield, undergoes ring-opening on treatment with Fe(OTf)2 in the presence of base affording a trinuclear iron complex, [Fe3(μ2-S(Me)NS(-))4](OTf)2 (1) which is fully characterized by structural and spectroscopic methods. X-ray structural data reveal that 1 contains four S(Me)NS(-) ligands meridionally bound to two pseudooctahedral iron centers each bridged by two thiolates to a distorted tetrahedral central iron. The combined spectroscopic (UV-vis, Mössbauer, NMR), magnetic (solution and solid state), and computational (DFT) studies indicate that 1 includes a central, high-spin Fe(II) (S = 2) with two low-spin (S = 0) peripheral Fe(II) centers. Complex 1 reacts with excess PMePh2, CNxylyl (2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide), and P(OMe)3 in CH3CN to form diamagnetic, thiolate-bridged, dinuclear Fe(II) complexes {[Fe(μ-S(Me)NS(-))L2]2}(OTf)2 (2-4). These complexes are characterized by elemental analysis; (1)H NMR, IR, UV-vis, and Mössbauer spectroscopy; and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Interestingly, addition of excess P(OMe)3 to complex 1 in CH2Cl2 produces primarily the diamagnetic, mononuclear Fe(II) complex, {Fe(S(Me)NS(-))[P(OMe)3]3}(OTf) (5).

Abstract
Binding an electron deficient pincer ligand which strongly dictates planar, mer stereochemistry, to a metal which prefers tetrahedral structure, e.g., d(10) CuCl, is explored for possible intramolecular redox chemistry. Experiment shows that the pincer ligand 2,2'-bis-tetrazinyl pyridine, btzp, forms a complex (btzp)CuCl which is a chloride-bridged polymer in the solid state, hence with 20 valence electrons around copper. DFT calculations show that even the monomer has nonplanar copper with the tetrazinyl nitrogen lone pairs somewhat misdirected away from copper, with long Cu/N bonds, in a singlet ground state; 13.9 kcal/mol less stable is a triplet, whose electronic structure shows one electron from the ground state Cu(I) has been transferred to a pincer π* orbital. Outer sphere electron transfer to (btzp)CuCl yields (btzp)Cu where the added electron has gone into the pincer, to leave a ligand-centered radical, characterized by EPR, chemical reactivity, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Abstract
In this overview we present recent combined electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, spectroscopic and computational studies from our group on the electron transfer reactions of cytochrome c and of the primary electron acceptor of cytochrome c oxidase, the CuA site, in biomimetic complexes. Based on these results, we discuss how protein dynamics and thermal fluctuations may impact on protein ET reactions, comment on the possible physiological relevance of these results, and finally propose a regulatory mechanism that may operate in the Cyt/CcO electron transfer reaction in vivo. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled: 18th European Bioenergetic Conference.

Abstract
Two new redox active ligands based on di(2-(3-organopyrazolyl)-p-tolyl)amine have been prepared in order to investigate potential effects of steric bulk on the structures, electronic properties, or reactivity of tricarbonylrhenium(I) complexes. Replacing the hydrogens at the 3-pyrazolyl positions with alkyl groups causes significant distortion to the ligand framework due to potential interactions between these groups when bound to a fac-Re(CO)(3) moiety. The distortions effectively increase the nucleophilic character of the central amino nitrogen and ligand-centered reactivity of the metal complexes.

Abstract
The structures and optoelectronic properties of tricarbonylrhenium(I) complexes of di(2-pyrazolyl-p-tolyl)amine in its neutral and deprotonated (uninegative amido) form were investigated. Reactions of the complexes with Brønsted acids or bases result in distinctive changes of colour and electrochemical activity owing to the non-innocent nature of the ligand.

Abstract
Multifrequency electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is used to explore the electronic structures of a series of dicopper complexes of the type {(LXL)Cu}(2)(+). These complexes contain two four-coordinate copper centers of highly distorted tetrahedral geometries linked by two [LXL](-) ligands featuring bridging amido or phosphido ligands and associated thioether or phosphine chelate donors. Specific chelating [LXL](-) ligands examined in this study include bis(2-tert-butylsulfanylphenyl)amide (SNS), bis(2-di-iso-butylphosphinophenyl)amide (PNP), and bis(2-di-iso-propylphosphinophenyl)phosphide (PPP). To better map the electronic coupling to copper, nitrogen, and phosphorus in these complexes, X-, S-, and Q-band EPR spectra have been obtained for each complex. The resulting EPR parameters implied by computer simulation are unusual for typical dicopper complexes and are largely consistent with previously published X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory data, where a highly covalent {Cu(2)(mu-XR(2))(2)}(+) diamond core has been assigned in which removal of an electron from the neutral {Cu(2)(mu-XR(2))(2)} can be viewed as ligand-centered to a substantial degree. To our knowledge, this is the first family of dicopper diamond core model complexes for which the compendium of X-, S-, and Q-band EPR spectra have been collected for comparison to Cu(A).

A large rate constant for the self-exchange electron-transfer reaction (k(S) >or= 10(7) M(-1) s(-1)) makes this system a functional model for the type-1 active sites in blue copper proteins. Multiedge X-ray absorption spectroscopy, multifrequency electron paramagnetic resonance, and density functional theory analyses collectively indicate that the oxidized form is best regarded as a Cu(I)-aminyl radical complex rather than a Cu(II)-amido species, with about 70% localization of the unpaired electron on the NR(2) unit. Hydrogen-atom transfer and C-C coupling reactions are presented as examples of chemical reactivity manifested by this unusual electronic structure.

Abstract
Transition metal atoms often participate in redox reactions as catalytic sites, where ligand groups play an important role in orchestrating catalytic activity, especially in metalloenzymes. A major issue is to understand connections between oxidation state and geometry at the metal center, because geometric reorganization is directly related to reaction rate. In this article, we analyze an intriguing oxidation-induced geometrical change in [Cu-P-Cu-P] ring structures ( approximately 0.6 A change in metal-metal distance) using quantum chemical approaches. We find that the Cu-P interactions in the ring of the neutral species consist of four localized P --> Cu dative bonds. Successive oxidations extract electrons predominantly from P atoms on the ring rather than Cu sites. It emerges that as a result, the Cu-P interactions change and also exhibit partial Cu(3d) --> P donation, which causes the large distortion in geometry. We also find that the dication possesses a large degree of diradical character, forming a rare example of an observed species that is a singlet diradicaloid. This hypothesis is supported by our computational results as well as previously reported experimental features.

Abstract
N2O is a potent greenhouse gas and stratospheric reactant that has been steadily on the rise since the beginning of industrialization. It is an obligatory inorganic metabolite of denitrifying bacteria, and some production of N2O is also found in nitrifying and methanotrophic bacteria. We focus this review on the respiratory aspect of N2O transformation catalysed by the multicopper enzyme nitrous oxide reductase (N2OR) that provides the bacterial cell with an electron sink for anaerobic growth. Two types of Cu centres discovered in N2OR were both novel structures among the Cu proteins: the mixed-valent dinuclear Cu(A) species at the electron entry site of the enzyme, and the tetranuclear Cu(Z) centre as the first catalytically active Cu-sulfur complex known. Several accessory proteins function as Cu chaperone and ABC transporter systems for the biogenesis of the catalytic centre. We describe here the paradigm of Z-type N2OR, whose characteristics have been studied in most detail in the genera Pseudomonas and Paracoccus. Sequenced bacterial genomes now provide an invaluable additional source of information. New strains harbouring nos genes and capability of N2O utilization are being uncovered. This reveals previously unknown relationships and allows pattern recognition and predictions. The core nos genes, nosZDFYL, share a common phylogeny. Most principal taxonomic lineages follow the same biochemical and genetic pattern and share the Z-type enzyme. A modified N2OR is found in Wolinella succinogenes, and circumstantial evidence also indicates for certain Archaea another type of N2OR. The current picture supports the view of evolution of N2O respiration prior to the separation of the domains Bacteria and Archaea. Lateral nos gene transfer from an epsilon-proteobacterium as donor is suggested for Magnetospirillum magnetotacticum and Dechloromonas aromatica. In a few cases, nos gene clusters are plasmid borne. Inorganic N2O metabolism is associated with a diversity of physiological traits and biochemically challenging metabolic modes or habitats, including halorespiration, diazotrophy, symbiosis, pathogenicity, psychrophily, thermophily, extreme halophily and the marine habitat down to the greatest depth. Components for N2O respiration cover topologically the periplasm and the inner and outer membranes. The Sec and Tat translocons share the task of exporting Nos components to their functional sites. Electron donation to N2OR follows pathways with modifications depending on the host organism. A short chronology of the field is also presented.
