Abstract
The article demonstrated diverse binding modes of deprotonated 1,3-di(2-pyridinyl)-1,3-propanedione (HL) (κ2-[O,O]-, κ2-[N,O]-, and μ-bis-κ2-[N,O]-) on selective ruthenium platforms: Ru(acac)2 (dimeric [1]ClO4), Ru(bpy)2 (monomeric [2]ClO4), Ru(pap)2 (isomeric monomeric [3]ClO4/[4]ClO4, dimeric [5](ClO4)3), and Ru(PPh3)2(CO) (monomeric 6, isomeric dimeric [7]ClO4/[8]ClO4) (acac = acetylacetonate, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, pap = 2-phenylazopyridine). Structural authentication of the complexes revealed (i) diverse binding mode of L- including its unprecedented bridging mode in [8]ClO4, (ii) varying degrees of nonplanarity of L-, and (iii) development of 1D polymeric chains or dimeric/tetrameric forms via intermolecular π-π interactions. The preferential binding feature of L- in the complexes could also be corroborated by their calculated relative energies. The analysis of the multiredox steps of the complexes suggested severe mixing of metal-ligand frontier orbitals, which in effect pinpointed the involvement of L- in both the oxidative and reductive processes along the redox chain, suggesting its bidirectional noninnocence under the present coordination situations. Though α-diketone or β-diketiminate was reported to activate O2 on the selective Ru(acac)2 platform, the inability of analogous β-diketonate-derived [1]ClO4 could be attributed to its calculated greater HOMO-LUMO energy gap, which disfavored electron exchange at the metal(RuIII)-ligand(L-) interface to introduce the required unpaired spin at the ligand backbone toward the 3O2 activation event.

Abstract
A small set of mononuclear manganese complexes evaluated previously for their Mn hyperfine couplings (HFCs) has been analyzed using density functionals based on the exact-exchange energy density─in particular, the spin symmetry breaking (SSB) found previously when using hybrid functionals. Employing various strong-correlation corrected local hybrids (scLHs) and strong-correlation corrected range-separated local hybrids (scRSLHs) with or without additional corrections to their local mixing functions (LMFs) to mitigate delocalization errors (DE), the SSB and the associated dipolar HFCs of [Mn(CN)4]2-, MnO3, [Mn(CN)4N]-, and [Mn(CN)5NO]2- (the latter with cluster embedding) have been examined. Both strong-correlation (sc)-correction and DE-correction terms help to diminish SSB and correct the dipolar HFCs. The DE corrections are more effective, and the effects of the sc corrections depend on their damping factors. Interestingly, the DE-corrections reduce valence-shell spin polarization (VSSP) and thus SSB by locally enhancing exact-exchange (EXX) admixture near the metal center and thereby diminishing spin-density delocalization onto the ligand atoms. In contrast, sc corrections diminish EXX admixture locally, mostly on specific ligand atoms. This then reduces VSSP and SSB as well. The performance of scLHs and scRSLHs for the isotropic Mn HFCs has also been analyzed, with particular attention to core-shell spin-polarization contributions. Further sc-corrected functionals, such as the KP16/B13 construction and the DM21 deep-neural-network functional, have been examined.

Abstract
The present article deals with the structurally and spectroelectrochemically characterized newer class of ruthenium-azoheteroarenes [RuII(Ph-trpy)(Cl)(L)]ClO4, [1]ClO4-[3]ClO4 (Ph-trpy: 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine; L1: 2,2'-azobis(benzothiazole) ([1]ClO4); L2: 2,2'-azobis(6-methylbenzothiazole) ([2]ClO4); L3: 2,2'-azobis(6-chlorobenzothiazole) ([3]ClO4)). A collective consideration of experimental (i.e., structural and spectroelectrochemical) and theoretical (DFT calculations) results of [1]ClO4-[3]ClO4 established selective stabilization of (i) the unperturbed azo (N═N)0 function of L, (ii) the exclusive presence of the isomeric form involving the N(azo) donor of L trans to Cl, and (iii) the presence of extended, hydrogen-bonded trimeric units in the asymmetric unit of [2]ClO4 (CH---O) via the involvement of ClO4- anions. The detailed electrochemical studies revealed metal-based oxidation of [RuII(Ph-trpy)(Cl)(L)]+ (1+-3+) to [RuIII(Ph-trpy)(Cl)(L)]2+ (12+-32+); however, the electronic form of the first reduced state (1-3) could be better represented by its mixed RuII(Ph-trpy)(Cl)(L•-)/RuIII(Ph-trpy)(Cl)(L2-) state. Both native (1+-3+) and reduced (1-3) states exhibited weak lower energy transitions within the range of 1000-1200 nm. Further, [1]ClO4-[3]ClO4 delivered an electrochemical OER (oxygen evolution reaction) process in alkaline medium on immobilizing them to a carbon cloth support, which divulged an amplified water oxidation feature for [2]ClO4 due to the presence of electron-donating methyl groups in the L2 backbone. The faster OER kinetics and high catalytic stability of [2]ClO4 could also be rationalized by its lowest Tafel slope (85 mV dec-1) and choronoamperometric experiment (stable up to 12 h), respectively, along with high Faradic efficiency (∼97%). A comparison of [2]ClO4 with the reported analogous ruthenium complexes furnished its excellent intrinsic water oxidation activity.

Abstract
We report the observation of large electronic g-factors in magic number main group bimetallic nanoclusters by performing Stern-Gerlach deflection experiments at 10 K. The clusters AlPb12 and InPb12 exhibit values of g = 3.5-4.0, whereas GaPb12 clusters surprisingly reveal a value of g < 2.0. Multireference ab initio methods are applied to unmask the origin of the g-factors and to gain insight into the electronic structure. The interplay of the pyritohedral molecular symmetry, a particularly strong spin-orbit coupling involved in the ground state, and the presence of low-lying degenerate excited states causes large positive g-factors in AlPb12 and InPb12. Contrarily, the spin-orbit coupling in the GaPb12 ground state is completely quenched. This is due to the d-block contraction lowering the nonbonding Ga 5s orbital and consequently forming an icosahedral ground state. Thus, endohedral p-doped tetrel clusters, composed of purely main group elements, state a novel and unique class of magnetic compounds and their study contributes to a more profound understanding of the metal-metal interaction in polynuclear clusters as well as magnetism at the molecular level.

Abstract
MSn12 clusters (M = Al, Ga, In) were studied in electric and magnetic beam deflection experiments at temperatures of 16 K and 30 K. For all three species, the results of the electric beam deflection experiments indicate the presence of two structural isomers of which one is considerably polar. The magnetic beam deflection experiments show atom-like beam splitting (superatomic behavior) with g-factors of 2.6-2.7 for a fraction of the clusters in the molecular beam, indicating significant spin-orbit coupling. On the one hand, we investigate by several experiments combining electric and magnetic deflectors how the superatomic and polar fractions are linked proving the correlation of the Stark and Zeeman effects. On the other hand, the magnetic deflection behavior is examined more thoroughly by performing quantum chemical calculations. By systematic distortion of an artificial icosahedral tin cage towards the global minimum structure, which has a pyritohedral geometry, the shifts in the magnitude of the g-factor are found to be mainly caused by a single dominant electronic excitation. This allows one to develop a semi-quantitative understanding of the magnetic behavior. On the basis of avoided crossings in the rotational Zeeman diagram, simulations of the magnetic beam deflection comprising computed rotational constants, vibrational modes, g-factors and spin-rotation coupling constants are performed which resemble our experimental findings in satisfactory agreement. With this, a better understanding of the magnetic properties of nanoalloy clusters can be achieved. However, the geometric structures of the polar isomers are still unknown.

Abstract
To improve the catalytic activity of 3d transition metal catalysts, redox-active ligands are a promising tool. These ligands influence the oxidation state of the metal center as well as the ground spin-state and make the experimental determination of both properties challenging. Therefore, first-principles calculations, in particular employing density functional theory with a proper choice of exchange-correlation (xc) functional, are crucial. Common xc functionals were tested on a simple class of metal complexes: homoleptic, octahedral tris(diimine) iron(II) complexes. The spin-state energy splittings for most of these complexes showed the expected linear dependence on the amount of exact exchange included in the xc functionals. Even though varying redox-activity affects the electronic structure of the complexes considerably, the sensitivity of the spin-state energetics to the exact exchange admixture is surprisingly small. For iron(II) complexes with highly redox-active ligands and for a broad range of ligands in the reduced tris(diimine) iron(I) complexes, self-consistent field convergence to local minima was observed, which differ from the global minimum in the redox state of the ligand. This may also result in convergence to a molecular structure that corresponds to an energetically higher-lying local minimum. One criterion to detect such behavior is a change in the sign of the slope for the dependence of the spin-state energy splittings on the amount of exact exchange. We discuss possible protocols for dealing with such artifacts in cases in which a large number of calculations makes checking by hand unfeasible.

Abstract
This article demonstrates the stabilization of ground- and redox-induced metal-to-ligand charge transfer excited states on coordination of azo-coupled bmpd(L4) [bmpd = (E)-1,2-bis(1-methyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)diazene; L4 = -N═N-] to the electron-rich {Ru(acac)2} (acac = acetylacetonate) unit in mononuclear RuII(acac)2(L4) (1) and diastereomeric dinuclear (acac)2Ru2.5(μ-L4•-)Ru2.5(acac)2 [rac, ΔΔ/ΛΛ (2a)/meso, ΔΛ (2b)] complexes, respectively. It also develops further one-step intramolecular electron transfer induced L4•- bridged isovalent higher analogue [(acac)2RuIII(μ-L4•-)RuIII(acac)2]ClO4 in diastereomeric forms, rac-[2a]ClO4/meso-[2b]ClO4. On the contrary, under identical reaction conditions electronically and sterically permuted bimpd [L5, (E)-1,2-bis(4-iodo-1-methyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)diazene)] delivered mononuclear RuII(acac)2(L5) (3) as an exclusive product. Further, the generation of unprecedented heterotrinuclear complex [(acac)2RuII(μ-L4)AgI(μ-L4)RuII(acac)2]ClO4 ([4]ClO4) involving unreduced L4 via the reaction of 1 and AgClO4 revealed the absence of any inner-sphere electron transfer (IET) as in precursor 1, which in turn reaffirmed an IET (at the interface of electron-rich Ru(acac)2 and acceptor L4) mediated stabilization of 2. Structural authentication of the complexes with special reference to the tunable azo distance (N═N, N-N•-, N-N2-) of L and their spectro-electrochemical events in accessible redox states including the reversible electron reservoir feature of 2 → 2+/2+ → 2 were evaluated in conjunction with density functional theory/time-dependent density functional theory calculations. The varying extent of IET as a function of heteroaromatics appended to the azo group of L (L1 = abpy = 2,2'-azobipyridine, L2 = abbt = 2,2'-azobis(benzothiazole), L3 = abim = azobis(1-methylbenzimidazole), L4 and L5, Schemes 1 & 2) in the Ru(acac)2-derived respective molecular setup has been addressed.

Abstract
The unexplored 'actor' behavior of redox-active bis(aldimine) congener, p-phenylene-bis(picoline)aldimine (L1), towards dioxygen activation and subsequent functionalization of its backbone was demonstrated on coordination with {Ru(acac)2 } (acac= acetylacetonate). Reaction under aerobic condition led to the one-pot generation of dinuclear complexes with unperturbed L1, imino-carboxamido (L2- ), and bis(carboxamido) (L32- )-bridged isovalent {RuII (μ-L1)RuII }, 1/ {RuIII (μ-L32- )RuIII }, 3 and mixed-valent {RuII (μ-L2- )RuIII }, 2. Authentication of the complexes along with the redox non-innocence behavior of their bridge have been validated through structure, spectroelectrochemistry and DFT calculations. Kinetic and isotope labelling experiments together with DFT analyzed transition states justified the consideration of redox shuttling at metal/L1 interface for 3 O2 activation despite of the closed shell configuration of 1 (S=0) to give carboxamido derived 2/3.

Abstract
The present work aimed to obtain discrete heavier metal complexes of unperturbed deprotonated bis-lawsone (hinge-like H2L = 2,2'-bis(3-hydroxy-1,4-napthoquinone). This is primarily due to its limited examples with lighter metal ions (Co, Zn, and Ga) and the fact that our earlier approach with the osmium ion facilitated its functionalisation. Herein, we demonstrated the successful synthesis and structural characterisation of L2--derived diruthenium [(bpy)2RuII(μ-L2-)RuII(bpy)2](ClO4)2 [1](ClO4)2 (S = 0), (acac)2RuIII(μ-L2-)RuIII(acac)22 (S = 1) and monoruthenium (pap)2Ru(L2-) 3 (S = 0) derivatives (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, acac = acetylacetonate, and pap = 2-phenylazopyridine). The crystal structures established that (i) O,O-/O,O- donating five-membered bis-bidentate and O-,O- donating seven-membered bidentate chelating modes of deprotonated L2- in rac (ΔΔ/ΛΛ) diastereomeric [1](ClO4)2, 2 and 3, respectively. (ii) The L2- bridging unit in [1](ClO4)2, 2 and 3 underwent twisting its two naphthoquinone rings with respect to the ring connecting C-C bond by 73.01°, 62.15° and 59.12°, respectively. (iii) Intermolecular π-π interactions (∼3.5 Å) between the neighbouring molecules. The paramagnetic complex 2 (S = 1) with two non-interacting Ru(III) (S = 1/2) ions exhibited weak antiferromagnetic coupling only at very low temperatures. In agreement with the magnetic results, 2 displayed typical RuIII-based anisotropic EPR in CH3CN (<g>/Δg: 2.314/0.564) but without any forbidden g1/2 signal at 120 K. The complexes exhibited multiple redox processes in CH3CN in the experimental potential window of ± 2.0 V versus SCE. The analysis of the redox steps via a combined experimental and theoretical (DFT/TD-DFT) approach revealed the involvement of L2- to varying extents in both the oxidative and reductive processes as a consequence of its bidirectional redox non-innocent feature. The mixing of the frontier orbitals of the metal ion and L2- due to their closeness in energy indeed led to the resonating electronic form in certain redox states instead of any precise electronic structural state.

In the present study, a series of non-chelated BTD (2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)-bridged diruthenium(II) ([{(CH3CN)(acac)2RuII}2(μ-BTD)] 1, [{CH3CN(acac)2RuII}(μ-BTD){RuII(acac)2(η1-N-BTD)}] 2, [{(η1-N-BTD)(acac)2RuII}2(μ-BTD)] 3), and triruthenium ([{(acac)2RuII}3(μ-BTD)2(η1-N-BTD)2] 4) complexes with varying ratios of η1-N and μ-bis-η1-N,η1-N modes of BTD were studied. Complexes 1-4 (S = 0) were obtained via the one-pot reaction of electron-rich Ru(acac)2(CH3CN)2 and electron-deficient BTD in refluxing acetone. The relatively low Ru(II)/Ru(III) potential of 1-4 (0.08-0.44 V versus SCE) further facilitated the isolation of the corresponding mixed valent RuIIRuIII (S = 1/2) and RuIIRuIIRuIII (S = 1/2)/RuIIRuIIIRuIII (S = 1) forms [1]ClO4-[3]ClO4 and [4]ClO4/[4](ClO4)2, respectively. The single-crystal X-ray structures of the representative mixed valent [1]ClO4 and [3]ClO4 established (i) Ru⋯Ru distances of 6.227 Å and 6.256 Å (molecule A)/6.184 Å (molecule B), respectively, (ii) a significant variation of the N-S distance of BTD in [3]ClO4 as a function of its binding mode μ versus η1 and (iii) similar Ru-N (μ-BTD) distances in each case corresponding to a valence delocalised situation. The mixed valent diruthenium (1+-3+) and triruthenium (4+/42+) complexes exhibited metal-based anisotropic electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and moderately intense low-energy intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) transitions in the near-infrared region of 1730-1890 nm. Analysis of the IVCT band using the Hush treatment revealed a valence delocalised class III mixed valent state with the electronic coupling Vab of ≈2640-2890 cm-1, as also corroborated by the Kc values of 105-108, solvent independency of the IVCT band and uniform spin distribution between the metal ions in the singly occupied state(s). Furthermore, the involvement of the BTD (η1 and μ)-based orbitals in the reduction processes was evident by its free radical EPR feature.

Abstract
In order to isolate a monometallic Mg radical, the precursor (Am)MgI⋅(CAAC) (1) was prepared (Am=tBuC(N-DIPP)2 , DIPP=2,6-diisopropylphenyl, CAAC=cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene). Reduction of a solution of 1 in toluene with the reducing agent K/KI led to formation of a deep purple complex that rapidly decomposed. Ball-milling of 1 with K/KI gave the low-valent MgI complex (Am)Mg⋅(CAAC) (2) which after rapid extraction with pentane and crystallization was isolated in 15 % yield. Although a benzene solution of 2 decomposes rapidly to give Mg(Am)2 (3) and unidentified products, the radical is stable in the solid state. Its crystal structure shows planar trigonal coordination at Mg. The extremely short Mg-C distance of 2.056(2) Å indicates strong Mg-CAAC bonding. Calculations and EPR measurements show that most of the spin density is in a π* orbital located at the C-N bond in CAAC, leading to significant C-N bond elongation. This is supported by calculated NPA charges in 2: Mg +1.73, CAAC -0.82. Similar metal-to-CAAC charge transfer was calculated for M0 (CAAC)2 and [MI (CAAC)2 + ] (M=Be, Mg, Ca) complexes in which the metal charges range from +1.50 to +1.70. Although the spin density of the radical is mainly located at the CAAC ligand, complex 2 reacts as a low-valent MgI complex: reaction with a I2 solution in toluene gave (Am)MgI⋅(CAAC) (1) as the major product.

Abstract
Four types of tris-chelate ruthenium complexes bearing acetylacetonato (acac) and tropolonato (trop) ligands were synthesized and optically resolved into Δ and Λ isomers: [Ru(acac)3] (Ru-0), [Ru(acac)2(trop)] (Ru-1), [Ru(acac)(trop)2] (Ru-2), and [Ru(trop)3] (Ru-3). Chiral HPLC chromatograms, electronic circular dichroism (ECD), and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) of the four ruthenium complexes were systematically investigated. As a result, the absolute configurations of the newly prepared enantiomeric complexes Ru-2 and Ru-3 were determined. For the case of Ru-2, its absolute configuration was also confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The ECD changes upon chemical oxidation were further investigated for the four complexes. An ECD change in enantiomeric Ru-1 was observed upon oxidation, but the oxidized species soon returned to the neutral state within a few minutes. Enantiomers of Ru-3 also showed explicit ECD changes upon oxidation. Further, the lifetime of the oxidized state was the longest among the four investigated complexes, whereas they racemized in solution at room temperature. In contrast, the enantiomers of heteroleptic complexes (Ru-1 and Ru-2) concurrently exhibited ECD changes, relatively long lifetime of the oxidized state, and nil or quite slow racemization behavior. The coexistence of acac and trop ligands was key to making the competing factors compatible in the resultant ruthenium complexes.

Abstract
This article deals with the development of the unprecedented redox-mediated heterometallic coordination polymer {[RuIII(acac)2(μ-bis-η1-N,η1-N-BTD)2AgI(ClO4)]ClO4}n (3) via the oxidation of the monomeric building block cis-[RuII(acac)2(η1-N-BTD)2] (1) by AgClO4 (BTD = exodentate 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole, acac = acetylacetonate). Monomeric cis-[RuII(acac)2(η1-N-BTD)2] (1) and [RuII(acac)2(η1-N-BTD)(CH3CN)] (2) were simultaneously obtained from the electron-deficient BTD heterocycle and the electron-rich metal precursor RuII(acac)2(CH3CN)2 in refluxing CH3CN. Molecular identities of 1-3 were authenticated by their single-crystal X-ray structures as well as by solution spectral features. These results also reflected the elusive trigonal-planar geometry of the Ag ion in Ru-Ag-derived polymeric 3. Ru(III) (S = 1/2)-derived 3 displayed metal-based anisotropic EPR with ⟨g⟩/Δg = 2.12/0.56 and paramagnetically shifted 1H NMR. Spectroelectrochemistry in combination with DFT/TD-DFT calculations of 1n and 2n (n = 1+, 0, 1-) determined a metal-based (RuII/RuIII) oxidation and BTD-based reduction (BTD/BTD•-). The drastic decrease in the emission intensity and quantum yield but insignificant change in the lifetime of 3 with respect to 1 could be addressed in terms of static quenching and/or a paramagnetism-induced phenomenon. A homogeneously dispersed dumbbell-shaped morphology and the particle diameter of 3 were established by microscopic (TEM-EDX/SEM) and DLS analysis, respectively. Moreover, the dynamic nature of polymeric 3 was highlighted by its degradation to the η1-N-BTD coordinated monomeric fragment 1, which could also be followed spectrophotometrically in polar protic EtOH. Interestingly, both monomeric 1 and polymeric 3 exhibited efficient electrocatalytic activity toward water oxidation processes (OER, HER) on immobilization on an FTO support, which also divulged the better intrinsic water oxidation activity of 3 in comparison to 1.

Abstract
The odd-electron compounds [M(bpy)2(L1)](ClO4) M = Ru ([1](ClO4)) or Os ([2](ClO4)), and the even-electron species [M(bpy)2(H2L2)](ClO4)2, M = Ru ([3](ClO4)2) or Os ([4](ClO4)2) were obtained from pyrene-4,5-dione, L1, or 4,5-diaminopyrene, H4L2, and were characterised structurally, electrochemically and spectroscopically. Experimental and computational analysis (TD-DFT) revealed rather different electronic structures and spin distributions of the paramagnetic monocations 1+-4+. EPR investigations and electronic absorption studies exhibit increasing metal contributions to the singly occupied MO along the series 1+ < 3+ < 4+ < 2+, illustrated by g value and long-wavelength absorbance. In addition to variations of the metal (Ru,Os) and the donor atoms (O,NH) the extension of the π system of the semiquinone-type ligand has a large effect on the electronic structure of the paramagnetic cations.

Abstract
The article deals with the sensitive electronic forms in accessible redox states of structurally and spectroscopically authenticated deprotonated 1,2-bis((1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methylene)hydrazine (H2LR, R = H) or 1,2-bis((3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methylene)hydrazine (H2LR, R = Me), a BODIPY analogue bridged diruthenium complex as a function of varying ancillary ligands. It involved rac-(acac)2RuIII(μ-LR 2-)RuIII(acac)21a, R = H; 1b, R = Me (S = 1, acac = acetylacetonate), rac-[(bpy)2RuII(μ-L2-)RuII(bpy)2](ClO4)2 [2](ClO4)2 (S = 0, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) and diastereomeric [(pap)2RuII(μ-L2-)RuII(pap)2](ClO4)2meso-[3a](ClO4)2/rac-[3b](ClO4)2 (S = 0, pap = phenylazopyridine). The crystal structure established the linkage of the conjugated -C5[double bond, length as m-dash]N2-N3[double bond, length as m-dash]C6- central unit with the two terminal deprotonated pyrrole units of coordinated L2-. The bridging L2- in 1a, 1b, [2](ClO4)2, [3b](ClO4)2 and [3a](ClO4)2 was slightly twisted and planar with torsional angles of 41.54°, 42.91°, 37.38°, 35.33° and 0°, respectively, with regard to the central N2-N3 bond. The extent of twisting of the bridge followed an inverse relationship with the RuRu separation: 4.935/4.934 Å 1a/1b < 5.141 Å [2](ClO4)2 < 5.201 Å [3b](ClO4)2 < 5.351 Å [3a](ClO4)2. This is also attributed to the intermolecular ππ/CHπ interactions between the nearby aromatic rings of L and bpy or pap in [2](ClO4)2 or [3](ClO4)2, respectively. The multiple redox steps of the complexes varied appreciably based on the σ-donating (acac) and π-acidic (bpy, pap) characteristics of the ancillary ligands. Experimental (structure, EPR) and theoretical (DFT) evaluation pertaining to the electronic forms of 1n, 2n and 3n demonstrated the preferential involvement of L based frontier orbitals in electron transfer processes even in combination with the redox facile ruthenium ion. This in turn highlighted its redox non-innocent feature as in the case of well-documented metal coordinated quinonoid, formazanate, diimine (bpy), azo (pap) and β-diketiminate functions.

Abstract
Aerobic reaction between [RuII(DMSO)4Cl2], a redox-active 2-aminophenol-based ligand (H2L1: 2-[2-(benzylthio)phenylamino]-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol) and Et3N in MeOH under refluxing conditions afforded a purple complex [Ru(L1)2] (S = 0). Structural analysis reveals that the tridentate ligand coordinates in a mer conformation providing a distorted octahedral RuN2O2S2 coordination. Cyclic voltammetry on 1 in CH2Cl2 reveals the accessability of the monocation, dication and monoanion forms. Reddish purple monocation [Ru(L1)2](PF6)·CH2Cl2 ([1OX1](PF6)·CH2Cl2; S = 1/2) and green dication [Ru(L1)2](BF4)2·H2O ([1OX2](BF4)2·H2O; S = 0) have been isolated through the chemical oxidation of 1 in CH2Cl2 by [FeIII(η5-C5H5)2](PF6) and AgBF4, respectively. A structural analysis of the single crystals of the monocation and the dication with the compositions [1OX1](PF6)·CH2Cl2·H2O (2) and [1OX2](BF4)2·1.7H2O (3), respectively, has been done. Metrical (metal-ligand and ligand backbone) parameters, values of metrical oxidation states of coordinated ligands, 1H NMR spectra of 1 and [1OX2](BF4)2·H2O, EPR spectra of [1OX1](PF6)·CH2Cl2, X-ray photoelectron and UV-VIS-NIR spectra of 1-3, spin population analysis from broken-symmetry (BS) density functional theory (DFT) calculations and quasi-restricted orbital (QRO) analysis have allowed us to assign the electronic structure of the complexes. The complexes exhibit highly covalent metal-ligand interactions. The electronic states of 1, [1OX1]1+ and [1OX2]2+ are best described as [RuII{(LISQ)˙-}2] ↔ [RuIII{(LAP)2-}{(LISQ)˙-}] (S = 0), [RuIII{(LISQ)˙-}2]1+ (S = 1/2) and [RuII{(LIBQ)0}2]2+ ↔ [RuIII{(LISQ)˙-}{(LIBQ)0}]2+ (S = 0), respectively. Notably, all redox processes are ligand-centred. Absorption spectral properties have been rationalized based on time-dependent (TD)-DFT calculations. For 1, the appearance of an IVCT band at 1100 nm supports its Class II-III (borderline) ligand-based mixed-valence character.

Abstract
The purpose of this Viewpoint is to provide a broad-ranging update of advances in the coordination chemistry of redox-active (noninnocent) 2-aminophenolates, with emphasis on two ligand backbone structural parameters, the average of C-O and C-N (C-O/N) bond distances and Δa values, signifying the degree of bond-length alternation in the six-membered ring, in order to identify the redox level of the coordinated ligands. In the absence of magnetic, spectroscopic, and redox results, it has been established that it is possible to assign the electronic ground state of a coordination complex of 2-aminophenolates with consideration of charge, metal-ligand bond distances, and two very promising ligand backbone structural parameters. From a closer look at the sensitive ligand backbone metrical parameters of a diversified group of about 120 transition-metal complexes, a few very useful generalizations have been made.

Abstract
The present article demonstrates that ruthenium-hydride [RuII (H)(Cl)(CO)(PPh3 )3 ] mediated diverse functionalization modes of benzodifuroxan (BDF) encompassing two furoxan rings. Hydride transfer from the metal precursor facilitated multiple cascade reactions involving unsymmetrical cleavage of the furoxan rings of BDF, leading to the one-pot formation of a series of ruthenium (II) coordinated functionalized ligands exhibiting bidentate κ2 -N,O, κ2 -N,N' and bis-bidentate μ-bis(κ2 -N,O) modes. Further, a moderately stable intermediate species was also encountered in the reaction sequence in which the transformed deoxygenated ligand coordinated to the metal ion via the rarely manifested furazan ring (κ2 -N,N'' mode). The products were authenticated by their single-crystal X-ray structures and other spectroscopic/analytical techniques. Redox non-innocence of the functionalized ligands in the complexes was illustrated by spectroelectrochemistry (cyclic voltammmetry, UV-Vis. and EPR) in conjunction with DFT/TD-DFT calculations. Mechanistic outline for the facile ring opening processes of BDF including interconversions of complexes (e. g. reductive ring opening) were also addressed.

Abstract
The bis(aminophenol) 2,2'-biphenylbis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenylamine) (ClipH4) forms trans-(Clip)Os(py)2 upon aerobic reaction of the ligand with {(p-cymene)OsCl2}2 in the presence of pyridine and triethylamine. A more oxidized species, cis-β-(Clip)Os(OCH2CH2O), is formed from reaction of the ligand with the osmium(vi) complex OsO(OCH2CH2O)2, and reacts with Me3SiCl to give the chloro complex cis-β-(Clip)OsCl2. Octahedral osmium and ruthenium tris-iminoxolene complexes are formed from the chelating ligand tris(2-(3',5'-di-tert-butyl-2'-hydroxyphenyl)amino-4-methylphenyl)amine (MeClampH6) on aerobic reaction with divalent metal precursors. The complexes' structural and electronic features are well described using a simple bonding model that emphasizes the covalency of the π bonding between the metal and iminoxolene ligands rather than attempting to dissect the parts into discrete oxidation states. Emphasizing the continuity of bonding between disparate complexes, the structural data from a variety of Os and Ru complexes show good correlations to π bond order, and the response of the intraligand bond distances to the bond order can be analyzed to illuminate the polarity of the bonding between metal and the redox-active orbital on the iminoxolenes. The osmium compounds'π bonding orbitals are about 40% metal-centered and 60% ligand-centered, with the ruthenium compounds' orbitals about 65% metal-centered and 35% ligand-centered.

Abstract
In this study, the intramolecular electronic communication between π-conjugated moieties bridged by the tris-chelate [Ru(trop)3] (trop = tropolonate) framework has been investigated and compared with [Ru(acac)3] (acac = acetylacetonate) derivatives. Two types of π-conjugated groups, -C2SiMe3 and -C2Ph, which were each introduced at the 5-position of tropolonate, were found to behave almost independently in the resultant ruthenium complexes. In contrast, the cyclic voltammetry study of [Ru(trop)3] derivatives showed a clear decrease in ΔE, the difference in the potentials of the two redox couples, with an increase in the number of π-conjugated groups introduced into the [Ru(trop)3] framework. The lower ΔE values observed in [Ru(trop)3] derivatives compared to those in [Ru(acac)3] derivatives illustrated the non-innocent behavior of the tropolonate ligand, i.e., the mixing between the metal- and ligand-based frontier orbitals. This orbital mixing was exemplified in the oxidized [Ru(trop)3] derivatives, which showed a broad near-infrared (NIR) absorption. The increase in the red shift of the NIR absorption with the increasing number of terminal groups indicated intramolecular electronic communication between the terminal π-conjugated moieties. In contrast, no NIR absorption was observed upon oxidation of [Ru(acac)3] derivatives with -C2Ph groups. The lifetimes of the in situ formed [Ru(trop)3]+ and [Ru(acac)3]+ in acetonitrile solution were found to be several hours and minutes, respectively. Density functional theory calculations for [Ru(trop)3] and [Ru(acac)3] with terminal -C2Ph groups demonstrated that the spin densities in their mono-oxidized states were evenly distributed over the entire molecular framework and localized mainly on one ligand, respectively. These results confirmed that the mono-oxidized [Ru(trop)3]+ framework can behave as a hub and induce moderate intramolecular electronic communication between terminal π-conjugated groups.

Abstract
The title complexes were isolated as structurally characterised compounds [OsII(9-OP)L2]ClO4, L = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) or 2-phenylazopyridine (pap), and were compared with ruthenium analogues. A reversible one-electron oxidation and up to three reduction processes were observed by voltammetry (CV, DPV) and spectroelectrochemistry (UV-vis-NIR, partially EPR). Supporting calculations (DFT, TD-DFT) were used to assess the oxidation state combinations of the different redox active ligands and of the metal, revealing the effects of Os versus Ru exchange and of bpy versus pap acceptor ligation. Several unexpected consequences of these variations were observed for members of the new osmium-containing redox series. Remarkably, the EPR results exhibit a clear dichotomy between the complex ion [OsIII(9-OP-)(bpy)2]2+ and the radical species [OsII(9-OP˙)(pap)2]2+, which has not been similarly observed for the analogous [RuIII(9-OP-)L2]2+ systems. This difference, unprecedented for 5dn systems, is attributed to the superior stabilisation of the OsII state by the strongly π-accepting pap ligands. The reduced forms [OsII(9-OP-)(pap˙-)(pap)] and [OsII(9-OP-)(pap˙-)2]- exhibit strong inter-ligand interactions, leading to spin isomers and electron hopping.

Abstract
Coordination of a redox-active pyridine aminophenol ligand to Ru(II) followed by aerobic oxidation generates two diamagnetic Ru(III) species [1 a (cis) and 1 b (trans)] with ligand-centered radicals. The reaction of 1 a/1 b with excess NaN3 under inert atmosphere resulted in the formation of a rare bis(nitrido)-bridged trinuclear ruthenium complex with two nonlinear asymmetrical Ru-N-Ru fragments. The spontaneous reduction of the ligand centered radical in the parent 1 a/1 b supports the oxidation of a nitride (N(3-) ) to half an equivalent of N2 . The trinuclear omplex is reactive toward TEMPO-H, tin hydrides, thiols, and dihydrogen.
