Abstract
By using the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), the electronic structure and photophysical properties of a series of cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes bearing the substituted phenylpyrazole have been theoretically investigated. All studied iridium(III) complexes have the distorted octahedral geometry with cis-C,C, cis-O,O, and trans-N,N chelate disposition. The lowest lying singlet → singlet absorptions of all studied iridium(III) complexes are respectively located at 405 nm, 387 nm, 382 nm, 370 nm, and 387 nm. The calculated emission wavelengths for all studied iridium(III) complexes are 654 nm, 513 nm, 506 nm, 505 nm and 499 nm, respectively. The calculated emission wavelength for complex 4 at the CAM-B3LYP level is in good agreement with the experimental value. From the theoretical results, it can be seen that the electron-donating substituent groups have the important effect on the electronic structure and photophysical properties of all studied iridium(III) complexes. We hope that this study can provide valuable guidance for the design of new phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) materials.

Abstract
The electronic structure and photophysical properties of four mixed-carbene tris-cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes have been theoretically investigated by the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods. The effect of varying the main ligand by introducing different ring structures on the photophysical properties of the studied complexes has been explored. All studied complexes have slightly distorted octahedral geometries. The complex with a rigid skeletal structural main ligand possesses the smallest difference between the recombination energy of hole transport and recombination energy of electron transport among these complexes, enhancing the charge transfer balance. The lowest energy emission wavelength calculated is in very good agreement with the available experimental value. This study will provide useful information for the design of new phosphorescent organic light-emitting diode (OLED) materials. The electronic structure and photophysical properties of four tris-cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes have been theoretically investigated by the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods.![]()

Abstract
[Ru(bpy)2dppz]2+ and [Ru(phen)2dppz]2+ as the light switches of the deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA) molecule have attracted much attention and have become a powerful tool for exploring the structure of the DNA helix. Their interactions have been intensively studied because of the excellent photophysical and photochemical properties of ruthenium compounds. In this perspective, this review describes the recent developments in the interactions of these two classic intercalated compounds with a DNA helix. The mechanism of the molecular light switch effect and the selectivity of these two compounds to different forms of a DNA helix has been discussed. In addition, the specific binding modes between them have been discussed in detail, for a better understanding the mechanism of the light switch and the luminescence difference. Finally, recent studies of single molecule force spectroscopy have also been included so as to precisely interpret the kinetics, equilibrium constants, and the energy landscape during the process of the dynamic assembly of ligands into a single DNA helix.

Abstract
In the course of developing ultrasensitive and quantitative electrochemical point-of-care analytical tools for genetic detection of infectious diseases, osmium(ii) metallointercalators were revealed to be suitable and efficient redox probes to monitor the in vitro DNA amplification [Defever etal, Anal. Chem., 2011, 83, 1815-1821]. In this work, we thus propose a complete computational protocol in order to evaluate the affinity between Os(ii) complexes with double-stranded DNA. This protocol is based on molecular dynamics, with the parametrization of the GAFF force field for the Os(ii) complexes presenting an octahedral environment with polypyridine ligands, and QM/QM' calculations to evaluate the binding energy. For three Os(ii) probes and different binding sites, molecular dynamics simulations and interaction energies calculated at the QM/QM' level are successively discussed and compared to experimental data in order to identify the most stable binding sites. The computational protocol we propose should then be used to design more efficient Os(ii) metallointercalators.

Abstract
The cyano group (CN) of the acceptor in organic sensitizers plays an important role for highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cells. In this paper, three 5, 6-difluoro-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (DFBTD) organic molecules with different number of CN units, named ME15, ME16 and ME17, were investigated by the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT). We analyzed the CNs effects on the electronic structures, optical properties, adsorption modes and electron transfer and injection. The result shows that ME17 has the largest maximum absorption wavelength (λmax) among these new designed dyes due to the strong electron withdrawing ability of two CNs. In addition, CN greatly influence the adsorption modes of dye/TiO2 and electron injection mechanism. ME16 with one CN also has good optical absorption properties and its acceptor has the strongest coupling strength with the TiO2 semiconductor which is favorable for electron transfer and injection. Thus, we believe that the number of CN groups in acceptor should be moderate and one CN in D-A-π-A structure dyes may be the more appropriate focusing on the light harvesting ability, electron transfer and electron injection.

Abstract
The lack of molecular mechanistic understanding of the interaction between metal complexes and biomolecules hampers their potential medical use. Herein we present a robust procedure combining resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy and multiscale molecular dynamics simulations, which allows for straightforward elucidation of the precise interaction mechanism at the atomic level. The report unveils an unforeseen hydrolysis process and DNA binding of [Pt{N(p-HC6F4)CH2}2py2] (Pt103), which showed potential cytotoxic activity in the past. Pt103 preferentially coordinates to adjacent adenine sites, instead of guanine sites as in cisplatin, because of its hydrogen bond ability. Comparison with previous research on cisplatin suggests that selective binding to guanine or adenine may be achieved by controlling the acidity of the compound.

Abstract
The present work is aimed at a deeper investigation of two recently synthesized heteroaromatic fluorophores by means of a computational multilayer approach, integrating quantum mechanics (QM) and molecular mechanics (MM).
The present work is aimed at a deeper investigation of two recently synthesized heteroaromatic fluorophores by means of a computational multilayer approach, integrating quantum mechanics (QM) and molecular mechanics (MM). In particular, dispersion of the title dyes in a polymer matrix is studied in connection with potential applications as photoactive species in luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs). Molecular dynamics simulations, based on accurate QM-derived force fields, reveal increased stiffness of these organic dyes when going from CHCl3 solution to the polymer matrix. QM/MM computations of UV spectra for snapshots extracted from MD simulations show that this different flexibility permits explaining the different spectral shapes obtained experimentally for the two different environments. Moreover, the general spectroscopic trends are reproduced well by static computations employing a polarizable continuum description of environmental effects.

Abstract
The environmental effects on the structural and photophysical properties of [Ru(L)2 (dppz)](2+) complexes (L=bpy=2,2'-bipyridine, phen=1,10-phenanthroline, tap=1,4,5,8-tetraazaphenanthrene; dppz=dipyrido[3,3-a:2',3'-c]phenazine), used as DNA intercalators, have been studied by means of DFT, time-dependent DFT, and quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations. The electronic characteristics of the low-lying triplet excited states in water, acetonitrile, and DNA have been investigated to decipher the influence of the environment on the luminescent behavior of this class of molecules. The lowest triplet intra-ligand (IL) excited state calculated at λ≈800 nm for the three complexes and localized on the dppz ligand is not very sensitive to the environment and is available for electron transfer from a guanine nucleobase. Whereas the lowest triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer ((3)MLCT) states remain localized on the ancillary ligand (tap) in [Ru(tap)2 (dppz)](2+), regardless of the environment, their character is drastically modified in the other complexes [Ru(phen)2 (dppz)](2+) and [Ru(bpy)2 (dppz)](2+) upon going from acetonitrile (MLCTdppz/phen or MLCTdppz/bpy) to water (MLCTdppz) and DNA (MLCTphen and MLCTbpy). The change in the character of the low-lying (3) MLCT states accompanying nuclear relaxation in the excited state controls the emissive properties of the complexes in water, acetonitrile, and DNA. The light-switching effect has been rationalized on the basis of environment-induced control of the electronic density distributed in the lowest triplet excited states.

Abstract
The properties of a low molecular weight organic dye, namely 4-naphthyloxy-1-methoxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine, covalently bound to an apolar polyolefin were investigated by means of a multi-level approach, combining classical molecular dynamics simulations, based on purposely parameterized force fields, and quantum mechanical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent extension (TD-DFT). The structure and dynamics of the dye in its embedding medium were analyzed and discussed taking the entangling effect of the surrounding polymer into account, and also by comparing the results to those obtained for a different environment, i.e. toluene solution. Finally, the influence was investigated of long lived cages found in the polymeric embedding on photophysical properties, in terms of the slow and fast dye's internal dynamics, by comparing computed IR and UV spectra with their experimental counterparts.

Abstract
The geometry structures, electronic structures, absorption, and phosphorescence properties of four tris-cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes IrL3, that is, 1 (L = 2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinato,N,C2′), 2 (L = 2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinato,N,C2′-5-phenyl), 3 (L = 2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinato,N,C2′-5-(p-tolyl)), and 4 (L = 2-(4,6-difluorophenyl) benzo[h]isoquinoline), have been investigated under the framework of the time-dependent density functional theory approach. For assumed 2 and 3, the emission energies are nearly the same, consistent with their similar HOMO−LUMO energy gaps. The calculated lowest energy emissions are localized at 523, 605, 616, and 642 nm for 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. Calculations of ionization potential and electron affinity were used to evaluate the injection abilities of holes and electrons into these complexes. For 2, the calculated results evidenced a larger 3MLCT contribution (27.0%), a large S0 → S1 transition dipole moment ([Formula: see text]) of 1.43 D, and a small S1−T1 splitting energy ([Formula: see text]) of 0.33 eV, which could result in a large radiative decay rate (kr). We hope that this theoretical work can provide a suitable guide to the future design and synthesis of novel phosphorescent materials for use in the organic light-emitting diodes.

Abstract
To investigate the relationship between the molecular structure and biological activity of polypyridyl Ru(II) complexes, such as DNA binding, photocleavage ability, and DNA topoisomerase and RNA polymerase inhibition, six new [Ru(bpy)(2)(dppz)](2+) (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine; dppz=dipyrido[3,2-a:2,',3'-c]phenazine) analogs have been synthesized and characterized by means of (1)H-NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. Interestingly, the biological properties of these complexes have been identified to be quite different via a series of experimental methods, such as spectral titration, DNA thermal denaturation, viscosity, and gel electrophoresis. To explain the experimental regularity and reveal the underlying mechanism of biological activity, the properties of energy levels and population of frontier molecular orbitals and excited-state transitions of these complexes have been studied by density-functional theory (DFT) and time-depended DFT (TDDFT) calculations. The results suggest that DNA intercalative ligands with better planarity, greater hydrophobicity, and less steric hindrance are beneficial to the DNA intercalation and enzymatic inhibition of their complexes.

Abstract
An imidazophenanthroline-containing ruthenium(II) complex [Ru(bpy)(2)(mbpibH2)](2+) (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine, mbpibH2=1,3-bis([1,10]phenanthroline[5,6-d]imidazol-2-yl)benzene) can bind DNA through groove-binding and/or non-classical intercalation modes, revealed by spectrophotometric methods, viscosity measurements and variable ionic strength experiments. On the basis of binding interactions between cationic [Ru(bpy)(2)(mbpibH2)](2+) and anionic DNA at a molar ratio of 1:1, a yellow transparent cast film has been assembled on an indium-tin oxide (ITO) surface using a solution-based self-standing method. The prepared DNA-[Ru(bpy)(2)(mbpibH2)](2+) film shows a bi-exponential luminescence decay with τ(1)=62.1 ns (8.0%) and τ(2)=594.5 ns (92.0%), whose lifetimes become much shorter than those of DNA-bound [Ru(bpy)(2)(mbpibH2)](2+) in buffer solutions. The Ru(II) complex with a free bi-dentate coordination site in the DNA cast film shows tunable luminescence, quenched dynamically by Cu(2+) and restored by using EDTA to eliminate two modes of Cu(2+)-binding. The results from this study provide a significant foundation for better understanding the fabrication and modulation of a DNA-based solid luminescence device using the Ru(II) complexes as DNA-concentrating and signal-sensing agents.

Abstract
The quenching and recovery kinetics of photoluminescence of [Ru(bpy)(2)(tatp)](2+) (Ru1) and [Ru(bpy)(2)(dmtatp)](2+) (Ru2) intercalated within DNA (where bpy=2,2'-bipyridine, tatp=1,4,8,9-tetra-aza-triphenylene and dmtatp=2,3-dimethyl-1,4,8,9-tetra-aza-triphenylene) have been investigated by steady-state and time-resolved methods performed at various temperatures (293-333K). Two complexes Ru1 and Ru2 show a single-exponential luminescence decay with τ(Ru1)=246.0 ns and τ(Ru2)=513.5 ns, whose luminescence upon intercalating into DNA exhibits very consistent bi-exponential decay changes. The addition of Cu(2+) ions is found to dynamically quench the luminescence of both DNA-bound Ru(II) complexes, involving a spontaneous exothermic process. The sequential addition of EDTA can partially recover the luminescence quenched by Cu(2+), however depending on methyl substituents of the intercalative ligand. The chemical conversion and luminescence control mechanism of the two DNA-bound Ru(II) complexes is discussed in detail. The present results should be of value for better understanding chemical modulation of DNA-bound Ru(II) complexes as luminescence probes.
