Toward N,P-Doped π-Extended PAHs: A One-Pot Synthesis to Diannulated 1,4,2-Diazaphospholium Triflate Salts

A novel method for the one-pot synthesis of diannulated 1,4,2-diazaphospholium triflate salts by a Me₃SiOTf-mediated self-condensation of dichlorophosphaneyl aza-(poly)cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (aza-(P)AHs; namely, pyridine, quinoline, phenanthridine, and benzo[d]thiazole) is reported. The diannulated 1,4,2-diazaphospholium triflate salts are characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, X-ray analysis, as well as their calculated NICS values, underlining their aromatic character. Quantum mechanical calculations shed light on the intermolecular reaction mechanism. Follow up chemistry, such as the halogenation reaction with XeF₂ or SO₂Cl₂ with the dipyridinium derivative selectively yields the respective dihalo-σ⁴,λ⁵- and tetrahalo-σ⁵,λ⁶-diazaphospholium triflate salts. The dihalo-σ⁴,λ⁵-diazaphospholium triflate salt serves well as a surrogate for the introduction of the cationic 2-(1,2'-bipyridin)-1-iumyl ligand (1,2'-bipyl), the monocationic structural isomer of the prototypical 2,2'-bipyridine ligand (2,2'-bipy).

Base Metal-Catalyzed Direct Olefinations of Alcohols with Sulfones

Herein, a base-metal nickel-catalyzed direct olefination of alcohols with sulfones is reported. The reaction operates under low catalyst loading and does not require an external redox reagent. A wide range of trans-stilbenes and styrenes were synthesized in good yields and selectivities. Biologically active stilbene DMU-212 could also be synthesized in a single step under these conditions. Mechanistic studies involving kinetic isotope effect, deuterium labeling experiments, and catalytic and stoichiometric reactions with possible catalytic intermediates were performed to elucidate a plausible mechanism.

Competing Allosteric Mechanisms for Coordination-Directed Conformational Changes of Chiral Stacking Structures with Aromatic Rings

This work revealed that significant asymmetric nonlinear effects can be found in a coordination-directed conformational alteration through competing allosteric mechanisms. Toward this aim, we have prepared new chiral bridging ligands [( S, S)- and ( R, R)-Im₂An] containing an anthracene ring as a spacer with two ethynyl-linked chiral imidazole groups at the 9,10-positions. The ( S, S)- and ( R, R)-Im₂An ligands (L) spontaneously form the assemblies with Zn²⁺ ions (M) in solution phase, giving L₄M₂-type assemblies with a general formula [( S, S)- or ( R, R)-Im₂An]₄(Zn²⁺)₂. NMR studies revealed that the [( S, S)-Im₂An]₄(Zn²⁺)₂ assembly has an anthracene dimer structure with a parallel-displaced geometry, leading to relatively small circular dichroism (CD) signals, as expected for nonchiral objects. Conversely, subsequent addition of chiral coligands [( R)- or ( S)-Ph-box] to [( S, S)-Im₂An]₄(Zn²⁺)₂ afforded an alternative Zn²⁺ assembly with general formula [( R)- or ( S)-Ph-box]₂[( S, S)-Im₂An]₂(Zn²⁺)₂, where the chiral coligands expel two of the ( S, S)-Im₂An ligands that were singly bound to the Zn²⁺ ions in the original [( S, S)-Im₂An]₄(Zn²⁺)₂ assembly. This ligand-exchange reaction causes conformational alteration from a parallel-displaced structure to a twisted stacking between the anthracene rings inside the Zn²⁺ assembly, which results in a significant enhancement of CD signals due to excitonic interactions of the chiral anthracene dimer. Dissymmetry factor ( g_CD) for CD due to chiral stacking structures shows a significant inverse sigmoidal response to the enantiomeric excess of the chiral coligands. The observed nonlinear phenomena are results of the two conflicting mechanisms, homochiral cooperative association (homochiral self-sorting) to form CD-active assemblies [( S)- or ( R)-Ph-box]₂[( S, S)-Im₂An]₂(Zn²⁺)₂ versus heterochiral cooperative dissociation of [( S, S)-Im₂An]₄(Zn²⁺)₂ by sequestering of Zn²⁺ inside the assembly through formation of a heterochiral 2:1 Zn²⁺ complex ([( R)-Ph-box][( S)-Ph-box]Zn²⁺). The presented mechanisms provide a new strategy for generating switch-like OFF/ON states in chiral systems.

Supramolecular chirality transformation driven by monodentate ligand binding to a coordinatively unsaturated self-assembly based on C 3-symmetric ligands

Monodentate ligand binding is facilitated by supramolecular chirality transformations from propeller-shaped chirality into single-twist chirality by altering the self-assembly of C 3-symmetric chiral ligands. The C 3-symmetric chiral ligands (Im R 3Bz and Im S 3Bz) contain three chiral imidazole side arms (Im R  and Im S ) at the 1,3,5-positions of a central benzene ring. Upon coordination to zinc ions (Zn2+), which have a tetrahedral coordination preference, the C 3-symmetric chiral ligands assemble, in a stepwise manner, into a propeller-shaped assembly with a general formula (Im( R or S ) 3Bz)4(Zn2+)3. In this structure each Zn2+ ion coordinates to the three individual imidazole side arms. The resulting assembly is formally coordinatively unsaturated (coordination number, n = 3) and capable of accepting monodentate co-ligands (imidazole: ImH2) to afford a coordinatively saturated assembly [(ImH2)3(Im R 3Bz)4(Zn2+)3]. The preformed propeller-shaped chirality is preserved during this transformation. However, an excess of the monodentate co-ligand (ImH2/Zn2+ molar ratio of ∼1.7) alters the propeller-shaped assembly into a stacked dimer assembly [(ImH2) m (Im R 3Bz)2(Zn2+)3] (m = 4-6) with single-twist chirality. This switch alters the degree of enhancement and the circular dichroism (CD) pattern, suggesting a structural transition into a chiral object with a different shape. This architectural chirality transformation presents a new approach to forming dynamic coordination-assemblies, which have transformable geometric chiral structures.

Heterobimetallic copper(i) complexes bearing both 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene and functionalized 3-(2′-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole

Copper(i) 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene complexes are well regulated by functional 3-(2′-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole exhibiting mono-anionic η²(N1,N2) and neutral η²(N1,N2) and η²(N1,N4) chelating modes.

A Smart Sensing Method for Object Identification Using Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Coordination-Driven Self-Assembly

The potential use of circularly polarized luminescence for object identification in a sensor application is demonstrated. New luminescence probes using pyrene derivatives as sensor luminophores were developed. (R,R)-Im₂ Py and (S,S)-Im₂ Py contain two chiral imidazole moieties at 1,6-positions through ethynyl spacers (angle between spacers ca. 180°). The probe molecules spontaneously self-assemble into chiral stacks (P or M helicity) upon coordination to metal ions with tetrahedral coordination (Zn²⁺ ). The chiral probes display neither circular dichroism (CD) nor circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) without metal ions. However, (R,R)-Im₂ Py and (S,S)-Im₂ Py exhibit intense chiroptical activity (CD and CPL) upon self-assembly with Zn²⁺ ions. (R,R)-Im₂ Py and (S,S)-Im₂ Py with chemical stimuli-responsibility allow sensing using the CPL signal as detection output, enabling us to discriminate between a signal from the target analyte and that from non-target species.

Coordination Polymers based on the Neutral Ditopic Ligand (C6H4PO(OCH3)2)2 Involving some f-Block Elements

An improved synthesis using microwave heating affords (C6H4PO(OCH3)2)2 in excellent isolated yield (95 %). The ligand properties of this bisphosphonateester were explored towards hard metal centers M2+ (M = Ca, UO2) and M3+ (M = La, Ce, Sm, Eu) resulting in coordination polymers, for which the reduction of ionic size of the central metal atom resulted in lower-dimensional structural motifs as opposed to higher dimensional networks obtained for the larger ions. All coordination polymers were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, and combustion analysis. The ligand was furthermore characterized with multinuclear NMR spectroscopy.

Remarkable influence of 'phane effect' on the excited-state properties of cofacially oriented coumarins

A comprehensive investigation of the photophysics of a cofacially oriented bis-coumarin based on naphthalene, i.e., Cou-Nap, designed and synthesized to examine the influence of π-electronic communication between the two fluorophores, reveals exceptional excited-state properties. While the anticipated [2 + 2] photocycloaddition is not observed despite the fact that the two reactive coumarin units are at a distance of 3.8 Å, the fluorescence quantum yields and singlet lifetimes in different solvents are found to be remarkably higher when compared to those of the parent coumarin and a mono-coumarin model system, i.e., Cou-Dur. In addition to large solvent-induced Stokes shifts, Cou-Nap displays intriguing temperature-dependent emission in a nonpolar solvent such as cyclohexane. The observed photophysical properties are reconciled based on the so-called 'phane effect' that is operative in cyclophanes. In the latter, an effective π-π interaction between the aromatic rings modifies the attributes of the chromophore in such a manner that the observed properties cannot be associated with the individual aromatic rings. The temperature-dependent emission is proposed to arise as a consequence of thermally activated ISC from the singlet-excited state to one of the higher energy triplet states. The results constitute, for the first time, the demonstration of modification of the excited-state properties of a fluorophore in a non-cyclophane system by 'phane effect'.

Coordination-Driven Syntheses of Compact Supramolecular Metallacycles toward Extended Metallo-organic Stacked Supramolecular Assemblies

One important concept associated with supramolecular chemistry is supramolecular self-assembly, which deals with the way discrete individual components interact via intermolecular interactions in order to build, upon their spontaneous association, high order functional assemblies. The accumulation of these very simple and localized noncovalent interactions (such as H-bonding, dipole-dipole, hydrophobic/hydrophilic, van der Waals, π-π, π-CH, etc.) is ubiquitous in the complexity of natural systems (such as DNA, proteins, membranes, micelles, etc.). It can also be transposed to the directed synthesis of intricate artificial scaffolds, which have anticipated geometries and properties. Among the synthetic strategies based on this concept, coordination-driven supramolecular chemistry uses the robust, reversible, and directional metal-to-ligand coordinative bond to build discrete metallo-supramolecular architectures. Within the last two decades, coordination-driven supramolecular chemistry has proved to be one of the most powerful contemporary synthetic approaches and has provided a significant number of increasingly complex supramolecular assemblies, which have predetermined sizes and geometries. While much focus has been devoted to architectures bearing internal cavities for host-guest chemistry or to generate specific reactivity, particular attention can also be paid to compact supramolecular assemblies given that their specific structures are characterized by peculiar synthetic guiding rules as well as by alternative long-range self-assembling properties. This Account describes how a preassembled Cu^I bimetallic clip bearing short intermetallic distances can be used as a U-shaped molecular clip to give general and versatile access to a large variety of original compact supramolecular metallacycles. When this Cu^I precursor is reacted with various cyano-capped ditopic linkers that have increasing lengths and complexities, specific effects guiding the selective and straightforward syntheses of such compact supramolecular objects are highlighted. Whereas a subtle compromise between the length of the ditopic linkers and the steric bulk of the molecular clip appears to be a purely stereogeometric preliminary parameter to master, lateral interlinker interactions (π-π stacking interactions or aurophilic interactions depending on the nature of the internal cores of the linkers) can circumvent these constraints regardless of the length of the linkers and allow the selective formation of new compact supramolecular structures. Generally, such derivatives presented a strong tendency to self-assemble in the solid state due to inter-supramolecule interactions. This approach thus opens a new door toward molecular materials having an attractive solid state structure for potential applications related to charge carrier mobility and luminescence properties. These compact supramolecular assemblies can therefore be considered as original secondary binding units directing the predictive preparation of such extended networks. The on-purpose design of original building blocks bearing specific cores allowed the formation of new compact supramolecular metallacycles such as "U-shaped" π-stacked assemblies or "pseudodouble paracyclophanes". Similarly, the control of the secondary structure of one-dimensional coordination polymers alternating π-stacked compact supramolecular metallacycles was also conducted. The results that are discussed in this Account illustrate how the rational design of both preassembled polymetallic precursors bearing short intermetallic distances and ditopic linkers able to induce cumulative lateral weak interactions can implement the general synthetic guiding rules of coordination driven supramolecular chemistry. This opens perspectives to use such compact supramolecular assemblies as secondary building blocks for the design of long-range organized functional molecular materials that have predictable architectures and targeted properties.

A solid state highly emissive Cu(i) metallacycle: promotion of cuprophilic interactions at the excited states

The supramolecular synthesis of an original thermochromic metal-rich Cu(i) metallacycle (quantum yield 72% at RT) is reported. Important geometrical changes reinforcing cuprophilic interactions are calculated at the excited states.

Phosphorus centers of different hybridization in phosphaalkene-substituted phospholes

Phosphole-substituted phosphaalkenes (PPAs) of the general formula Mes*P=C(CH(3))-(C(4)H(2)P(Ph))-R 5 a-c (Mes*=2,4,6-tBu(3)Ph; R=2-pyridyl (a), 2-thienyl (b), phenyl (c)) have been prepared from octa-1,7-diyne-substituted phosphaalkenes by utilizing the Fagan-Nugent route. The presence of two differently hybridized phosphorus centers (σ(2) ,λ(3) and σ(3) ,λ(3)) in 5 offers the possibility to selectively tune the HOMO-LUMO gap of the compounds by utilizing the different reactivity of the two phosphorus heteroatoms. Oxidation of 5 a-c by sulfur proceeds exclusively at the σ(3) ,λ(3) -phosphorus atom, thus giving rise to the corresponding thioxophospholes 6 a-c. Similarly, 5 a is selectively coordinated by AuCl at the σ(3),λ(3) -phosphorus atom. Subsequent second AuCl coordination at the σ(2),λ(3) -phosphorus heteroatom results in a dimetallic species that is characterized by a gold-gold interaction that provokes a change in π conjugation. Spectroscopic, electrochemical, and theoretical investigations show that the phosphaalkene and the phosphole both have a sizable impact on the electronic properties of the compounds. The presence of the phosphaalkene unit induces a decrease of the HOMO-LUMO gap relative to reference phosphole-containing π systems that lack a P=C substituent.

Positional isomers of cyanostilbene: two-component molecular assembly and multiple-stimuli responsive luminescence

An understanding of the aggregates and properties of positional isomers can not only uncover how a slight difference in molecular structure alter crystal packing and bulk solid-state properties, but also plays an important role in developing new types of molecule-based functional materials. Herein, we report a study of the molecular packing and static/dynamic luminescence properties of three cyanostilbene (CS)-based isomers (CS1, CS2, CS3) within their single- and two-component molecular solids. Changing the positions of the cyano substitutents in the CS isomers has a marked influence on their packing modes and luminescent properties. Moreover, two-component CS-based materials have been constructed, which exhibit tunable conformations and packing fashions, as well as fluorescence properties, which differ from the pristine CS solids. The CS-based two-component molecular materials show solvent-responsive luminescence due to the dynamic disassembly of the samples. Moreover, it was found that the system based on CS2 and octafluoronaphthalene shows reversible photochromic fluorescence upon alternating light illumination and grinding. Such co-assembly procedures provide a facile way to fabricate patterned luminescent film materials. Therefore, this work not only affords new insight into the relationship between isomers and luminescence from molecular and supramolecular perspectives, but provides an effective strategy to develop multiple-stimuli-responsive luminescent materials.

Syntheses, Structures, Characterisation, and Spectroscopic Properties of CuI and AgI Complexes with Extended C–H···π and π···π Interactions

Based on the ligands N,N′-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)benzene-1,4-diamine (pmb) and N,N′-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)biphenyl-4,4′-diamine (pmbb), the three compounds [Cu2(pmb) (PPh3)2(Cl)2] (1), [Cu2(pmbb)(CH3CN)2(PPh3)2](BF4)2·2DMF (2), and [Ag2(pmbb)(PPh3)2] (ClO4)2 (3) have been synthesised and characterised. Structural analysis reveals that all of these complexes contain 1D supramolecular arrays, with different variations in π-stacking patterns and intermolecular C–H···π interactions. Crystal structures of 1 and 2 contain 1D tape-like arrays formed by C–H···π and π···π interactions, and an ordered-layer-lattice of DMF and BF4– in 2 is located between the one-dimensional array. For 3, π-stacking interactions lead to the construction of 1D supramolecular arrays and a 2D network. The results indicate that C–H···π and π···π interactions play an important role in the construction of the supramolecular structure. In addition, the absorption peaks of complexes 1 and 3 in the solid state at room temperature show intraligand charge transfer and metal-to-ligand charge transfer absorptions. The optical and fluorescent properties of 2 were also studied in acetonitrile solution at room temperature.
