Abstract
We present the implementation of quadratic response theory based upon the relativistic equation-of-motion coupled cluster method. We showcase our implementation, whose generality allows us to consider both time-dependent and time-independent electric and magnetic perturbations, by considering the static and frequency-dependent hyperpolarizability of hydrogen halides (HX, X = F-At), providing comprehensive insights into their electronic response characteristics. Additionally, we evaluated the Verdet constant for noble gases Xe and Rn and discussed the relative importance of relativistic and electron correlation effects for these magneto-optical properties. Finally, we calculate the two-photon absorption cross sections of transition [ns1S0 → (n + 1)s1S0] of Ga+ and In+, which are suggested as candidates for new ion clocks. As our implementation allows for the use of nonrelativistic Hamiltonians as well, we have compared our EOM-QRCC results to the QR-CC implementation in the DALTON code and show that the differences between CC and EOMCC response are in general smaller than 5% for the properties considered. Collectively, the results underscore the versatility of our implementation and its potential as a benchmark tool for other approximated models, such as density functional theory for higher-order properties.

Abstract
We designed four ternary lanthanide tris-(β-diketonate) complexes of the form [Ln(tta)3(tpy-HImzphen)], where Ln = LaIII, EuIII, SmIII and TbIII; tta = (2-theonyltrifluoroacetonate) and tpy-HImzphen = 2-(4-[2,2':6',2'']terpyridin-4'-yl-phenyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole. All the complexes have been thoroughly characterized by standard analytical tools and spectroscopic techniques including single crystal X-ray diffraction. In situ generation of the complexes was also monitored via absorption and emission spectroscopy upon incremental addition of the respective lanthanide precursor {Ln(tta)3(H2O)2} to the dichloromethane solution of the terpyridyl-imidazole ligand. The photophysical behaviors of all the complexes were thoroughly investigated via absorption and both steady-state and time-resolved emission spectroscopic techniques. The emission spectral measurements were carried out at both room temperature and 77 K to understand the deactivation dynamics of the excited states and elucidate the distinctive luminescence responses from the four lanthanide metal ions owing to the introduction of the terpyridyl-based ancillary ligand.

Abstract
Substitution of the diglyme ligand of [Eu(hfa)3(diglyme)] (where hfa is hexafluoroacetylacetonate) with a simple 1,10-phenanthroline leads to a six-fold increase of the product μβEFISH, as measured by the Electric-Field-Induced Second Harmonic generation (EFISH) technique. Similarly, [Eu(tta)3(1,10-phenanthroline)] (where Htta is 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone) is characterized by a large second-order NLO response. Both 1,10-phenanthroline europium complexes have great potential as multifunctional materials for photonics.

Abstract
We report here a series of coordinatively-saturated and thermodynamically stable luminescent [Ln(dtntp)(H2O)] [Ln(III) = Eu (1), Tb (2), Gd (3), Sm (4) and Dy (5)] complexes using an aminophenyl-terpyridine appended-DTPA (dtntp) chelating ligand as cell imaging and photocytotoxic agents. The N,N″-bisamide derivative of H5DTPA named as dtntp is based on 4'-(4-aminophenyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine conjugated to diethylenetriamine-N,N',N″-pentaacetic acid. The structure, physicochemical properties, detailed photophysical aspects, interaction with DNA and serum proteins, and photocytotoxicity were studied. The intrinsic luminescence of Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes due to f → f transitions used to evaluate their cellular uptake and distribution in cancer cells. The solid-state structure of [Eu(dtntp)(DMF)] (1·DMF) shows a discrete mononuclear molecule with nine-coordinated {EuN3O6} distorted tricapped-trigonal prism (TTP) coordination geometry around the Eu(III). The {EuN3O6} core results from three nitrogen atoms and three carboxylate oxygen atoms, and two carbonyl oxygen atoms of the amide groups of dtntp ligand. The ninth coordination site is occupied by an oxygen atom of DMF as a solvent from crystallization. The designed probes have two aromatic pendant phenyl-terpyridine (Ph-tpy) moieties as photo-sensitizing antennae to impart the desirable optical properties for cellular imaging and photocytotoxicity. The photostability, coordinative saturation, and energetically rightly poised triplet states of dtntp ligand allow the efficient energy transfer (ET) from Ph-tpy to the emissive excited states of the Eu(III)/Tb(III), makes them luminescent cellular imaging probes. The Ln(III) complexes show significant binding tendency to DNA (K ~ 104 M-1), and serum proteins (BSA and HSA) (K ~ 105 M-1). The luminescent Eu(III) (1) and Tb(III) (2) complexes were utilized for cellular internalization and cytotoxicity studies due to their optimal photophysical properties. The cellular uptake studies using fluorescence imaging displayed intracellular (cytosolic and nuclear) localization in cancer cells. The complexes 1 and 2 displayed significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cells. These results offer a modular design strategy with further scope to utilize appended N,N,N-donor tpy moiety for developing light-responsive luminescent Ln(III) bioprobes for theranostic applications.

Abstract
The electronic structure of Eu2+ compounds results from a complex combination of strongly correlated electrons and relativistic effects as well as weak ligand-field interaction. There is tremendous interest in calculating the electronic structure as nowadays the Eu2+ ion is becoming more and more crucial, for instance, in lighting technologies. Recently, interest in semiempirical methods to qualitatively evaluate the electronic structure and to model the optical spectra has gained popularity, although the theoretical methods strongly rely upon empirical inputs, hindering their prediction capabilities. Besides, ab initio multireference models are computationally heavy and demand very elaborative theoretical background. Herein, application of the ligand-field density functional theory (LFDFT) method that is recently available in the Amsterdam Modeling Suite is shown: (i) to elucidate the electronic structure properties on the basis of the multiplet energy levels of Eu configurations 4f7 and 4f65d1 and (ii) to model the optical spectra quite accurately if compared to the conventional time-dependent density functional theory tool. We present a theoretical study of the molecular Eu(η9-C9H9)2 complex and its underlying photoluminescence properties with respect to the Eu 4f-5d electron transitions. We model the excitation and emission spectra with good agreement with the experiments, opening up the possibility of modeling lanthanides in complex environment like nanomaterials by means of LFDFT at much-reduced computational resources and cost.

Abstract
Three zwitterionic meso-substituted A3B- and AB2C-porphyrins containing one sulfonato alkylpyridinium substituent and three or two alkoxy-substituted phenyl groups were synthesized in good yield and fully characterized as to their physicochemical properties by a variety of techniques. This new series of inner salt donor-acceptor meso-substituted porphyrin derivatives were prepared for possible application as amphiphilic probes for membrane insertion in the area of combined second-harmonic and two-photon fluorescence cellular microscopy. To this end, the linear and nonlinear optical properties of the compounds were characterized, together with their electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties in non-aqueous media. The neutral design of such molecules enabled us to determine their second order non-linear properties, both by Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic Generation and Hyper–Rayleigh Scattering. Two-photon absorption cross sections of these dyes were also measured by the two-photon induced fluorescence method. The zwitterionic nature of the inner salt results in very specific solvent-dependent redox-properties, which could be rationalized in terms of solvent-dependent ion-pairing. The overall data electrochemical and photophysical data indicates that these new porphyrinic systems should be good probes for membrane potential sensing.

Abstract
AbstractThe electronic absorption spectra of 29 phenyl-ring substituted chalcones have been investigated with the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and polarizable continuum TD-DFT (PCM-TD-DFT). It turns out that the hybrid PBE1PBE functional with the 6-31G basis set provide reliable λmax when the solvent effects are included in the model. Comparisons with experimental values lead to a mean absolute error of 12 nm (0.136 eV). Moreover, the observed substituent effects are reproduced by calculation qualitatively. The λmax of substituted chalcone in phenyl ring A is less sensitive to substitution than that in ring B. The linear correlation of Hammett’s substituent constants (σP) with LUMO energies is better with respect to HOMO energies. The calculation reveals that the maximum absorption band mainly results from the π→π* transition from HOMO to LUMO. The analysis of the electron density plots of frontier molecular orbitals show that most transitions should be of valence excitation nature.

Abstract
The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of [Ln(hfac)(3)(diglyme)] (hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate; diglyme = bis(2-methoxyethyl)ether; Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Sm, Eu, Gd, Er, Lu) complexes have been investigated by a combination of electric-field second harmonic generation (EFISH) and harmonic light scattering (HLS) techniques, providing evidence for the relevant role of f electrons in tuning the second-order NLO response dominated by the octupolar contribution. These lanthanide NLO chromophores allow a clean valuation of the influence of f electrons on the quadratic hyperpolarizability and on its dipolar and octupolar contributions. Molecular quadratic hyperpolarizability values measured by the EFISH method, beta(EFISH), initially increase rapidly with the number of f electrons, the value for the Gd complex being 11 times that of the La complex, whereas this increase is much lower for the last seven f electrons, the beta(EFISH) value of the Lu complex being only 1.2 times that of the Gd complex. The increase of beta(HLS), which is dominated by an octupolar contribution, is much lower along the Ln series. Remarkably, the good beta(HLS) values of these simple systems, well known for their luminescence properties, are reached at no cost of transparency.
