Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to polymerize of 1-butyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide (PIL). PIL was embedded into PVA with a different content ratio by casting method. This research also deals with the effect of adding PIL in different proportions to PVA on the electrical and mechanical properties properties in addition to the morphology of the prepared samples.
Design/methodology/approach
1-Butyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide was synthesized through quaternization and free radical polymerization. The resulting polymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. In addition to the morphology of PVA, PVA/PIL was investigated by polarizing microscope. Also, the effect of PIL content on the electrical and mechanical properties was evaluated.
Findings
The findings of this study might lead to new applications for PVA and PILs in electrical and dielectrics. The mechanical results revealed that the tensile strength increased slightly with increasing polyionic liquid (PIL) content and decreased above 10% PIL. While the elongation at break increased significantly with increasing PIL content and begin to decrease above 10% PIL. Also, the electrical property of the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/PIL blends was improved because of the strong plasticizing effect of PIL. Also, the electrical conductivity of these polymer electrolytes is greatly increased. This indicates that the imidazolium-based PIL has an effective approach that leads to an increase in the conductivity of the polymer. The PILs/PVA design will not only enrich the chemical structure but also will contribute to green manufacturing techniques and a processing methodology that enables green membrane manufacture.
Originality/value
This study contributes to green manufacturing techniques and a processing methodology that enables “green” membrane manufacture.

Abstract
The interplay between oxidation state and coordination geometry dictates both kinetic and thermodynamic properties underlying electron transfer events in copper coordination complexes. An ability to stabilize both CuI and CuII oxidation states in a single conformationally dynamic chelating ligand allows access to controlled redox reactivity. We report an analysis of the conformational dynamics of CuI complexes bearing dipicolylaniline (dpaR) ligands, with ortho-aniline substituents R = H and R = OMe. Variable temperature NMR spectroscopy and electrochemical experiments suggest that in solution at room temperature, an equilibrium exists between two conformers. Two metal-centered redox events are observed which, bolstered by structural information from single crystal X-ray diffraction and solution information from EPR and NMR spectroscopies, are ascribed to the CuII/I couple in planar and tetrahedral conformations. Activation and equilibrium parameters for these structural interconversions are presented and provide entry to leveraging redox-triggered conformational dynamics at Cu.

Abstract
Bugs, such as microorganisms and insects, are present in the environment and sometimes can be health-hazardous if the living environment is not maintained following proper hygienic regulations. In the present scenario of increasing public awareness, environmental consciousness, and growing demand for easy-care, and disinfected textiles, the manufacturing of protective and easy-to-care textiles has become a key necessity of the modern world. Comfortable, clean, hygienic, antimicrobial, and insect repelling properties of textile goods are gaining the accelerating research momentum as a basic requirement to produce multifunctional textiles. These functional finishes have numerous applications such as in-home textiles, bed nets, and tenting, camping gear as well as in military uniforms. Synthetic antimicrobial and insect repellents are quite effective against insects and microscopic organisms but are slightly toxic to the human being and the environment. To overcome these problems, researchers are considering natural agents for functional finishes, but their effectiveness is less durable to textile material. Besides needful advantages, the excessive use of dyes in finishing processes heavily required washing cycles and ultimately release various types of hazardous dyes or wasteful effluents in the environment. This review reports the chemical composition and recent developments in textile finishes, particularly antimicrobial and insect repellent textile finishes. A large number of commonly used antimicrobial agents (i.e. chitosan, zwitterionic compounds, silver and silver-based compounds, titanium dioxide nanoparticles, imidazolium salts, triclosan and quaternary ammonium salts) and insect repellent textile finishes (i.e. N‑N‑diethyl‑m‑toluamide, permethrin, cypermethrin, pyrethrum, picaridin, bioallethrin, citriodiol and essential oils) have been presented. Finally, the review is wrapped up with major research gaps/challenges, concluding remarks, and future opportunities in this area of research.

Abstract
A redox-regulated molecular tweezer complex was synthesized via the weak-link approach. The PtII complex features a redox-switchable hemilabile ligand (RHL) functionalized with a ferrocenyl moiety, whose oxidation state modulates the opening of a specific coordination site. Allosteric regulation by redox agents gives reversible access to two distinct structural states-a fully closed state and a semi-open state-whose interconversion was studied via multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy. Two structures in this four-state system were further characterized via SCXRD, while the others were modeled through DFT calculations. This fully reversible, RHL-based system defines an unusual level of electrochemical control over the occupancy of a specific coordination site, thereby providing access to four distinct coordination states within a single system, each defined and differentiated by structure and oxidation state.

Abstract
The pseudopeptide L, derived from a nitrilotriacetic acid scaffold and functionalized with three histidine moieties, is reminiscent of the amino acid side chains encountered in the Alzheimer's peptide (Aβ). Its synthesis and coordination properties for CuΙ and CuΙΙ are described. L efficiently complex CuΙΙ in a square-planar geometry involving three imidazole nitrogen atoms and an amidate-Cu bond. By contrast, CuΙ is coordinated in a tetrahedral environment. The redox behavior is irreversible and follows an ECEC mechanism in accordance with the very different environments of the two redox states of the Cu center. This is in line with the observed resistance of the CuΙ complex to oxidation by oxygen and the CuΙΙ complex reduction by ascorbate. The affinities of L for CuΙΙ and CuΙ at physiological pH are larger than that reported for the Aβ peptide. Therefore, due to its peculiar Cu coordination properties, the ligand L is able to target both redox states of Cu, redox silence them and prevent reactive oxygen species production by the CuAβ complex. Because reactive oxygen species contribute to the oxidative stress, a key issue in Alzheimer's disease, this ligand thus represents a new strategy in the long route of finding molecular concepts for fighting Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract
The synthesis, acid-base behavior, and Cu(2+) coordination chemistry of a new ligand (L1) consisting of an azamacrocyclic core appended with a lateral chain containing a 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4(1H)-pyridinone group have been studied by potentiometry, cyclic voltammetry, and NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy. UV-vis and NMR studies showed that phenolate group was protonated at the highest pH values [log K = 9.72(1)]. Potentiometric studies point out the formation of Cu(2+) complexes of 1:2, 2:2, 4:3, 1:1, and 2:1 Cu(2+)/L1 stoichiometries. UV-vis analysis and electrochemical studies evidence the implication of the pyridinone moieties in the metal coordination of the 1:2 Cu(2+)/L1 complexes. L1 shows a stronger chelating ability than the reference chelating ligand deferiprone. While L1 shows no cytotoxicity in HeLa and ARPE-19 human cell lines (3.1-25.0 μg/mL), it has significant antioxidant activity, as denoted by TEAC assays at physiological pH. The addition of Cu(2+) diminishes the antioxidant activity because of its coordination to the pyridinone moiety phenolic group.

Abstract
Supramolecular bioinorganic chemistry is a natural evolution in biomimetic metallic systems since it constitutes a further degree of complexity in modeling. The traditional approach consisting of mimicking the first coordination sphere of metal sites proved to be very efficient, because valuable data are extracted from these examples to gain insight in natural systems mechanisms. But it does not reproduce several specific aspects of enzymes that can be mimicked by the implementation of a cavity embedding the labile active site and thus controlling the properties of the metal ion by noncovalent interactions. This Account reports on a strategy aimed at reproducing some supramolecular aspects encountered in the natural systems. The cavity complexes described herein display a coordination site constructed on a macrocycle. Thanks to a careful design of the cavity-based ligands, complexes orienting their labile site specifically toward the inside of the macrocycle were obtained. The supramolecular systems are based on the flexible calix[6]arene core that surrounds the metal ion labile site, thereby constraining exogenous molecules to pass through the conic funnel to reach the metal center. Such an architecture confers to the metal ion very unusual properties and behaviors, which in many aspects are biologically relevant. Three generations of calix[6]-based ligands are presented and discussed in the context of modeling the monocopper sites encountered in some enzymes. A wide range of phenomena are highlighted such as the impact that the size and shape of the access channel to the metal center have on the selectivity and rate of the binding process, the possible remote control of the electronics through small modifications operated on the cavity edges, induced-fit behavior associated with host-guest association (shoe-tree effect) that affects the redox properties of the metal ion and the electron exchange pathway, consequences of forbidden associative ligand exchange allowing a redox switch to drive an "antithermodynamic" ligand exchange, drastic effects of the full control of the second coordination sphere, and dioxygen activation in a confined chamber conducted to a selective and unusual four-electron redox process. All these findings bring new clues for better understanding the control exerted by the proteic environment on a metal center, allow the identification of new reaction pathways, and lead to new proposals for enzymatic catalytic cycle (such as the formation of an alkylhydroperoxide intermediate for mononuclear Cu-hydroxylases). The supramolecular systems may also be exploited for designing highly selective and sensitive probes for molecules of particular function and shape or to design new selective catalysts.

Abstract
Here, we report a simple one-step access to new rigid N,O-calixarene ligands which is based on copper-catalized amination at the lower rim. We also present their main group and late transition metal complexes which show superior catalytic activity, in several organic transformations, compared with known metal calixarene complexes.

Abstract
Supramolecular assemblies formed by amphiphilic homopolymers with negatively charged groups in the hydrophilic segment have been designed to enable high labeling selectivity toward reactive side chain functional groups in peptides. The negatively charged interiors of the supramolecular assemblies are found to block the reactivity of protonated amines that would otherwise be reactive in aqueous solution, while maintaining the reactivity of nonprotonated amines. Simple changes to the pH of the assemblies' interiors allow control over the reactivity of different functional groups in a manner that is dependent on the pKa of a given peptide functional group. The labeling studies carried out in positively charged supramolecular assemblies and free buffer solution show that, even when the amine is protonated, labeling selectivity exists only when complementary electrostatic interactions are present, thereby demonstrating the electrostatically controlled nature of these reactions.

Abstract
The redox properties of copper pyridylpyrimidine complexes, which undergo linkage isomerism based on pyrimidine ring rotation, were compared under different coordination environments. A newly synthesized compound, [Cu(Mepypm)(L(Mes))]BF4 (1·BF4, Mepypm = 4-methyl-2-(2'-pyridyl)pyrimidine, L(Mes) = 2,9-dimesityl-1,10-phenanthroline) was compared with previously reported complexes of [Cu(MepmMepy)(L(Mes))]BF4 (2·BF4, MepmMepy = 4-methyl-2-(6'-methyl-2'-pyridyl)pyrimidine), Cu(Mepypm)(DPEphos)]BF4 (3·BF4, DPEphos = bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether), [Cu(Mepypm)(L(Anth))]BF4 (4·BF4, L(Anth) = 2,9-bis(9-anthryl)-1,10-phenanthroline), and [Cu(Mepypm)(L(Macro))]BF4 (5·BF4). Isomer ratios, isomerization dynamics, redox properties, and photoelectron conversion functions varied with the coordination structure. Methyl substituents on the 6-position of the pyridine moiety increased steric repulsion and contributed to quicker rotation, enhanced photoluminescence, and increased photodriven rotational isomerization.

Abstract
Our recent achievements relating to photofunctional molecules are addressed. Section 1 discloses a new concept of photoisomerization. Pyridylpyrimidine-copper complexes undergo a ring inversion that can be modulated by the redox state of the copper center. In combination with an intermolecular photoelectron transfer (PET) initiated by the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transition of the Cu(I) state, we realize photonic regulation of the ring inversion. Section 2 reports on the first examples of heteroleptic bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(II) complexes. Conventional homoleptic bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(II) complexes suffered from low fluorescence quantum yields, whereas the heteroleptic ones feature bright fluorescence even in polar solvents. Section 3 describes our new findings on Pechmann dye, which was first synthesized in 1882. New synthetic procedures for Pechmann dye using dimethyl bis(arylethynyl)fumarate as a starting material gives rise to its new structural isomer. We also demonstrate potentiality of a donor-acceptor-donor type of Pechmann dye in organic electronics.

Abstract
Deciphering the electron transfer reactivity characteristics of amyloid β-peptide copper complexes is an important task in connection with the role they are assumed to play in Alzheimer's disease. A systematic analysis of this question with the example of the amyloid β-peptide copper complex by means of its electrochemical current-potential responses and of its homogenous reactions with electrogenerated fast electron exchanging osmium complexes revealed a quite peculiar mechanism: The reaction proceeds through a small fraction of the complex molecules in which the peptide complex is "preorganized" so as the distances and angles in the coordination sphere to vary minimally upon electron transfer, thus involving a remarkably small reorganization energy (0.3 eV). This preorganization mechanism and its consequences on the reactivity should be taken into account for reactions involving dioxygen and hydrogen peroxide that are considered to be important in Alzheimer's disease through the production of harmful reactive oxygen species.
