Abstract
A mild catalytic variant of the aldol reaction between ethyl diazoacetate and aldehydes is described using a combination of N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)acetamide and catalytic tetramethylammonium pivalate as catalyst. The reaction proceeds rapidly at ambient temperature to afford the O-silylated aldol products in good to excellent yield, and the acetamide byproducts can be removed by simple filtration.

Abstract
A Cu(I)-catalyzed three-component reaction of cyclopropenes, enamines and aldehydes has been realized. This reaction proceeds via the interception of carbonyl oxonium ylide intermediates with α, β-unsaturated iminium ions that are in situ generated from enamines and aldehydes under the catalysis of Cu(MeCN)4PF6, leading to the desired γ-butenolide derivatives in good yields and with moderate diastereoselectivities. Access to these derivatives with tethered ketone and alkynal groups will expand the structural diversity of multi-substituted butenolides.

Abstract
Vinylogous enolate and enolate-type carbanions, generated by deprotonation of α,β-unsaturated compounds and characterized by delocalization of the negative charge over two or more carbon atoms, are extensively used in organic synthesis, enabling functionalization and C–C bond formation at remote positions. Similarly, reactions with electrophiles at benzylic and heterobenzylic position are performed through generation of arylogous and heteroarylogous enolate-type nucleophiles. Although widely exploited in metal-catalysis and organocatalysis, it is only in recent years that the vinylogy and arylogy principles have been translated fruitfully in phase-transfer catalyzed processes. This review provides an overview of the methods developed to date, involving vinylogous and (hetero)arylogous carbon nucleophiles under phase-transfer catalytic conditions, highlighting main mechanistic aspects.

Abstract
Mukaiyama aldol, Mannich, and Michael reactions are arguably amongst the most important C-C bond formation processes and enable access to highly relevant building blocks of various natural products. Their vinylogous extensions display equally high potential in the formation of important key intermediates featuring even higher functionalization possibilities through an additional conjugated C-C double bond. Hence, it is much desired to develop highly selective vinylogous methods in order to enable unconventional, more efficient asymmetric syntheses of biologically active compounds. In this regard, silyl-dienolates were discovered to display high regioselectivities due to their tendency toward γ-additions. The control of the enantio- and diastereoinduction of these processes have been for a long time dominated by transition metal catalysis, but it received serious competition by the application of organocatalytic approaches since the beginning of this century. In this review, the organocatalytic applications of silyl-dienolates in asymmetric vinylogous C-C bond formations are summarized, focusing on their scope, characteristics, and limitations.

Abstract
Organocatalysts, which are less toxic than metal catalysis, as well as inexpensive, environmentally benign, and stable against moisture and oxygen compared to metal-based catalysts, have received considerable attention for being efficient and clean catalysts. With respect to green chemistry, the development of organocatalysis is a significant research subject for a sustainable society. This article reviews studies on the development of novel organocatalysts and the reactions achieved from using them. Focusing on the push-pull ethylene moiety, in which two electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs) were introduced, we proposed that the vinylogous amide proton (N-H) will lead to the design of organocatalysts. We have developed the diaminomethylenemalononitrile (DMM) organocatalysts, which are push-pull ethylenes having two cyano groups as EWGs, and proved that they are effective for highly stereoselective hydrophosphonylation with aldehydes. The catalytic ability of the DMM organocatalyst was demonstrated in the development of the first asymmetric hydrophosphonylation of ketones using organocatalysts. The DMM organocatalyst can be applied to the selective 1,4-addition asymmetric hydrophosphonylation of enones. In addition, we designed and synthesized novel organocatalysts bearing squaramide-sulfonamide motif as multiple hydrogen bond donors. Squaramide-sulfonamide organocatalysts efficiently catalyzed the asymmetric direct vinylogous aldol reactions of furan-2(5H)-one with aldehydes. Successively, we achieved the synthesis of γ,γ-disubstituted-δ-hydroxy-γ-butenolide via asymmetric direct vinylogous aldol reaction of furanone derivatives using the squaramide-sulfonamide organocatalysts.

Abstract
Herein we report a cascade cocatalysis strategy for the facile construction of chiral γ,γ-disubstituted butenolides. The synthetic manifold employs simple alkynoic acids instead of the preformed silyloxy furans or 5-substituted furan-2(3H)-ones. In situ formed 5-substituted furan-2(3H)-ones by AgNO3 or Ph3PAuCl/AgOTf catalyzed cyclization of alkynoic acids can smoothly engage in the subsequent chiral diphenylprolinol TMS-ether catalyzed Michael and Michael-aldol reactions. The cascade process serves as a general approach to chiral quaternary γ,γ-disubstituted butenolides.

Abstract
Maleimides are often used as electrophiles in conventional reactions; however, their application as nucleophiles is limited to only a few reactions, and reactions utilizing α-aminomaleimides as asymmetric Michael donors have not been reported to date. Thus, in this work, asymmetric Michael addition of α-aminomaleimides as Michael donors to β-nitrostyrenes was conducted for the first time using an organocatalyst derived from a Cinchona alkaloid. Density functional theory investigations were crucial to improve the enantioselectivity of the adduct.

Abstract
The principle of vinylogy states that the electronic effects of a functional group in a molecule are possibly transmitted to a distal position through interposed conjugated multiple bonds. As an emblematic case, the nucleophilic character of a π-extended enolate-type chain system may be relayed from the legitimate α-site to the vinylogous γ, ε, ..., ω remote carbon sites along the chain, provided that suitable HOMO-raising strategies are adopted to transform the unsaturated pronucleophilic precursors into the reactive polyenolate species. On the other hand, when "unnatural" carbonyl ipso-sites are activated as nucleophiles (umpolung), vinylogation extends the nucleophilic character to "unnatural" β, δ, ... remote sites. Merging the principle of vinylogy with activation modalities and concepts such as iminium ion/enamine organocatalysis, NHC-organocatalysis, cooperative organo/metal catalysis, bifunctional organocatalysis, dicyanoalkylidene activation, and organocascade reactions represents an impressive step forward for all vinylogous transformations. This review article celebrates this evolutionary progress, by collecting, comparing, and critically describing the achievements made over the nine year period 2010-2018, in the generation of vinylogous enolate-type donor substrates and their use in chemical synthesis.

Abstract
Direct asymmetric synthesis of δ-hydroxy-β-ketoesters was accomplished via regio- and enantioselective aldol reactions of β-ketoesters with isatins catalyzed by cinchona alkaloid thiourea derivatives. The C-C bond formation of the reactions occurred only at the γ-position of the β-ketoesters. Reaction progress monitoring and product stability analyses under the conditions that included the catalyst indicated that the γ-position reaction products were formed kinetically. Various δ-hydroxy-β-ketoesters bearing 3-alkyl-3-hydroxyoxindole cores relevant to the development of bioactive molecules were synthesized.

Abstract
Novel and efficient multicomponent reactions (MCRs) involving diketene, ninhydrin (indane-1,2,3-trione) and one primary amine (3CR) or two different primary amines (4CR) were achieved for the successful synthesis of dihydro-4H-indeno[1,2-b]furan-3-carboxamides or tetrahydroindeno[1,2-b]pyrrole-3-carboxamides, respectively. The merits of this method are highlighted by using either commercially available or easily accessible starting materials, operational simplicity, facile workup procedure, efficient usage of all the reactants, tolerance of a variety of functional groups and ability to conduct under un-catalyzed reaction condition. The products were also isolated by just decantation of the solvent, and for the purification column chromatography was non-required.

Abstract
The asymmetric organocatalytic cascade reaction of cyclic β-oxo aldehydes to 2-hydroxycinnamaldehydes is developed. The bifunctional tertiary amine-thiourea catalyst was used in a rationally designed multiple catalysis where the asymmetric iminium catalysis and thiourea anion-binding catalysis were combined by carboxylate anion as a ternary catalytic system to form a quinary catalyst-substrate complex, providing an efficient protocol for the construction of enantioenriched spiro-bridged or cagelike polyheterocyclic compounds. The reuse of catalysts was also successfully realized.

Abstract
The main paradigm of today's chemistry is sustainability. In pursuing sustainability, we need to learn from chemical processes carried out by Nature and realize that Nature does not use either strong acids, or strong bases or fancy reagents to achieve outstanding chemical processes. Instead, enzyme activity leans on the cooperation of several chemical entities to avoid strong acids or bases or to achieve such an apparently simple goal as transferring a proton from an NuH unit to an E unit (NuH + E → Nu–EH). Hydrogen bond catalysis emerged strongly two decades ago in trying to imitate Nature and avoid metal catalysis. Now to mount another step in pursuing the goal of sustainability, the focus is upon cooperativity between the different players involved in catalysis. This chapter looks at the concept of cooperativity and, more specifically, (a) examines the role of cooperative hydrogen bonded arrays of the general type NuH⋯(NuH)n⋯NuH (i.e. intermolecular cooperativity) to facilitate general acid–base catalysis, not only in the solution phase but also under solvent-free and catalyst-free conditions, and, most important, (b) analyzes the capacity of designer chiral organocatalysts displaying intramolecular networks of cooperative hydrogen bonds (NCHBs) to facilitate enantioselective synthesis by bringing conformational rigidity to the catalyst in addition to simultaneously increasing the acidity of key hydrogen atoms so to achieve better complementarity in the highly polarized transition states.

Abstract
A new strategy for a direct α,β,γ-functionalization of the γ-lactone framework in the corresponding 5-alkylidenefuran-2(5 H)-ones is reported. The developed approach is based on a stereocontrolled cascade reaction with 2-mercaptocarbonyl compounds proceeding in a sequence of thia-Michael/aldol/oxa-Michael reactions. Such a synthetic strategy allows for a construction of a unique polycyclic architecture containing γ-lactone, tetrahydrofuran, and tetrahydrothiophene ring systems. Excellent enantioselectivities and diastereoselectivities have been obtained in the presence of bifunctional catalyst derived from cinchona alkaloids.

Abstract
γ-Butenolides, γ-butyrolactones, and derivatives, especially in enantiomerically pure form, constitute the structural core of numerous natural products which display an impressive range of biological activities which are important for the development of novel physiological and therapeutic agents. Furthermore, optically active γ-butenolides and γ-butyrolactones serve also as a prominent class of chiral building blocks for the synthesis of diverse biological active compounds and complex molecules. Taking into account the varying biological activity profiles and wide-ranging structural diversity of the optically active γ-butenolide or γ-butyrolactone structure, the development of asymmetric synthetic strategies for assembling such challenging scaffolds has attracted major attention from synthetic chemists in the past decade. This review offers an overview of the different enantioselective synthesis of γ-butenolides and γ-butyrolactones which employ catalytic amounts of metal complexes or organocatalysts, with emphasis focused on the mechanistic issues that account for the observed stereocontrol of the representative reactions, as well as practical applications and synthetic potentials.

Abstract
The simple tetraminocalix[4]arene 1, which contains weak H-bond-donor NH2 groups, is reported to be a highly efficient organocatalyst for the Vinylogous Mukaiyama Aldol Reaction (VMAR) of 2-(trimethylsilyloxy)furan 5 with α-ketoesters 6 a-l under "on-water" conditions owing to the hydrophobic amplification of weak H-bond interactions. The catalytic efficiency of calixarene catalyst 1 was shown to be closely related to its recognition abilities towards the reactants 5 and 6 through a multipoint recognition model. The proposed model provided good explanations for the differences on the reaction rate acceleration and on the stereoselectivity observed with different substrates.

Abstract
The reactivity and the regioselective functionalization of silyl-diene enol ethers under a bifunctional organocatalyst provokes a dramatic change in the regioselectivity, from the 1,5- to the 1,3-functionalization. This variation makes possible the 1,3-addition of silyl-dienol ethers to nitroalkenes, giving access to the synthesis of tri- and tetrasubstituted double bonds in Rauhut-Currier type products. The process takes place under smooth conditions, nonanionic conditions, and with a high enantiomeric excess. A rational mechanistic pathway is presented based on DFT and mechanistic experiments.
