Trends in monoliths: Packings, stationary phases and nanoparticles

Monoliths media are gaining interest as excellent substitutes to conventional particle-packed columns. Monolithic columns show higher permeability and lower flow resistance than conventional liquid chromatography columns, providing high-throughput performance, resolution and separation in short run times. Monolithic columns with longer length, smaller inner diameter and specific selectivity to peptides or enantiomers have been played important role in hyphenated system. Monolithic stationary phases possess great efficiency, resolution, selectivity and sensitivity in the separation of complex biological samples, such as the complex mixtures of peptides for proteome analysis. The development of monolithic stationary phases has opened the new avenue in chromatographic separation science and is in turn playing much more important roles in the wide application area. Monolithic stationary phases have been widely used in fast and high efficiency one- and multi-dimensional separation systems, miniaturized devices, and hyphenated system coupled with mass spectrometers. The developing technology for preparation of monolithic stationary phases is revolutionizing the column technology for the separation of complex biological samples. These techniques using porous monoliths offer several advantages, including miniaturization and on-line coupling with analytical instruments. Additionally, monoliths are ideal support media for imprinting template-specific sites, resulting in the so-called molecularly-imprinted monoliths, with ultra-high selectivity. In this review, the origin of the concept, the differences between their characteristics and those of traditional packings, their advantages and drawbacks, theory of separations, the methods for the monoliths preparation of different forms, nanoparticle monoliths and metal-organic framework are discussed. Two application areas of monolithic metal-organic framework and nanoparticle monoliths are provided. The review article discusses the results reported in a total of 218 references. Other older references were included to illustrate the historical development of monoliths, both in preparation and types, as well as separation mechanism.

Molecular dynamics simulation of adsorption and separation of xylene isomers by Cu-HKUST-1

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely used in the adsorption separation of various gases. A fundamental understanding of the effective separation of xylene isomers helps improve aromatic products' separation efficiency and reduce industrial separation costs. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations combined with Molecular Science is widely used to predict gas adsorption and diffusion in single crystals with metal-organic frameworks. We performed a GCMC + MD combined approach to study xylene isomers' adsorption and separation in Cu-HKUST-1 to predict the permeability and selectivity of the ternary gas mixture in the MOF with the adsorption and diffusion usage data. Most current studies take into account the computational cost and difficulty. Most recent research models are limited to the adsorption of a single or specific molecule, such as hydrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, etc. For this reason, we report an attempt to study the adsorption separation of aromatic gases (p-xylene/o-xylene/m-xylene) based on Cu-HKUST-1 single-crystal materials based on some previous research methods with an appropriate increase in computational cost. To predict the adsorption selectivity and permeability of the ternary mixture of xylene isomers on the MOF surface, the model simulation calculates key parameters of gas adsorption, including gas adsorption volume (N), the heat of adsorption (Q st), Henry coefficient (K), and diffusion coefficient (D).

A multi pathway coupled domino strategy: I2/TBHP-promoted synthesis of imidazopyridines and thiazoles via sp3, sp2 and sp C-H functionalization

I₂/TBHP-promoted, one-pot, multi pathway synthesis of imidazopyridines and thiazoles has been achieved through readily available ethylarenes, ethylenearenes and ethynearenes. I₂/TBHP as an initiator and oxidant is used to realize the C-H functionalization of this domino reaction. Simple and available starting materials, wide range of functional group tolerance, high potential for drug activity of the products and application in production are the advantageous features of this method.

Cellulose based hyper-crosslinked polymer for efficiently recovering valuable materials from PO/SM wastewater

Herein, a TEMPO-oxidized cellulose-grafted-polystyrene hypercrosslinked polymer (TOC-PS-HCP) was synthesized facilely by TEMPO oxidation, grafting copolymerization and post crosslinking route. Based on the structural characterization, it was confirmed that TOC-PS-HCP mainly consisted of polystyrene chain on cellulose and rigid crosslinked bridge. Additionally, the as-prepared TOC-PS-HCP displayed appropriate hydrophobicity (water contact angle = 102.44°) and high specific surface area (S_BET = 601.20 m²·g^--1), which could efficiently recover ethylbenzene and styrene from PO/SM wastewater. The adsorption experiment was conducted to study the recovery performance for ethylbenzene and styrene in the aqueous phase. The results showed that TOC-PS-HCP could recover ethylbenzene and styrene quickly by adsorption process, and maintain a stable recovery rate both in different aqueous conditions and recycle experiments. The adsorption experiment in the simulated wastewater solution showed that TOC-PS-HCP exhibited the greater affinity for ethylbenzene and styrene than other substrates. Furthermore, a possible mechanism for the efficient recovery of ethylbenzene and styrene was suggested on the basis of experimental and theoretical results, which may be associated with van der Waals force and π-π stacking.

Revisiting molecular adsorption: unconventional uptake of polymer chains from solution into sub-nanoporous media

Adsorption of polymers from the solution phase has been extensively studied to cope with many demands not only for separation technologies, but also for the development of coatings, adhesives, and biocompatible materials. Most studies hitherto focus on adsorption on flat surfaces and mesoporous adsorbents with open frameworks, plausibly because of the preconceived notion that it is unlikely for polymers to enter a pore with a diameter that is smaller than the gyration diameter of the polymer in solution; therefore, sub-nanoporous materials are rarely considered as a polymer adsorption medium. Here we report that polyethylene glycols (PEGs) are adsorbed into sub-nanometer one-dimensional (1D) pores of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) from various solvents. Isothermal adsorption experiments reveal a unique solvent dependence, which is explained by the balance between polymer solvation propensity for each solvent and enthalpic contributions that compensate for potential entropic losses from uncoiling upon pore admission. In addition, adsorption kinetics identify a peculiar molecular weight (MW) dependence. While short PEGs are adsorbed faster than long ones in single-component adsorption experiments, the opposite trend was observed in double-component competitive experiments. A two-step insertion process consisting of (1) an enthalpy-driven recognition step followed by (2) diffusion regulated infiltration in the restricted 1D channels explains the intriguing selectivity of polymer uptake. Furthermore, liquid chromatography using the MOFs as the stationary phase resulted in significant PEG retention that depends on the MW and temperature. This study provides further insights into the mechanism and thermodynamics behind the present polymer adsorption system, rendering it as a promising method for polymer analysis and separation.

A Dynamic Chemical Clip in Supramolecular Framework for Sorting Alkylaromatic Isomers using Thermodynamic and Kinetic Preferences

Adsorptive chemical separation is at the forefront of future technologies, for use in chemical and petrochemical industries. In this process, a porous adsorbent selectively allows a single component from a mixture of three or more chemical components to be adsorbed or permeate. To separate the unsorted chemicals, a different adsorbent is needed. A unique adsorbent which can recognize and separate each of the chemicals from a mixture of three or more components is the necessity for the next generation porous materials. In this regard, we demonstrate a "dynamic chemical clip" in a supramolecular framework capable of thermodynamic and kinetics-based chemical separation. The dynamic space, featuring a strong preference for aromatic guests through π-π and C-H⋅⋅⋅π interactions and adaptability, can recognize the individual chemical isomers from mixtures and separate those based on thermodynamic and kinetic factors. The liquid-phase selectivity and separation of the aromatic isomers are possible by the adaptability of the "chemical clip" and here we elucidate the prime factors in a combinatorial approach involving crystallographic evidence and detailed computational studies.

Adsorptive Molecular Sieving of Styrene over Ethylbenzene by Trianglimine Crystals

The separation of styrene (ST) and ethylbenzene (EB) mixtures is of great importance in the petrochemical and plastics industries. Current technology employs multiple cycles of energy-intensive distillation due to the very close boiling points of ST and EB. Here, we show that the molecular sieving properties of easily scalable and stable trianglimine crystals offer ultrahigh selectivity (99%) for styrene separation. The unique molecular sieving properties of trianglimine crystals are corroborated by DFT calculations, suggesting that the incorporation of the nonplanar EB requires a significant deformation of the macrocyclic cavity whereas the planar ST can be easily accommodated in the cavity.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Liquid Phase Applications

In the last two decades, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted overwhelming attention. With readily tunable structures and functionalities, MOFs offer an unprecedentedly vast degree of design flexibility from enormous number of inorganic and organic building blocks or via postsynthetic modification to produce functional nanoporous materials. A large extent of experimental and computational studies of MOFs have been focused on gas phase applications, particularly the storage of low-carbon footprint energy carriers and the separation of CO2-containing gas mixtures. With progressive success in the synthesis of water- and solvent-resistant MOFs over the past several years, the increasingly active exploration of MOFs has been witnessed for widespread liquid phase applications such as liquid fuel purification, aromatics separation, water treatment, solvent recovery, chemical sensing, chiral separation, drug delivery, biomolecule encapsulation and separation. At this juncture, the recent experimental and computational studies are summarized herein for these multifaceted liquid phase applications to demonstrate the rapid advance in this burgeoning field. The challenges and opportunities moving from laboratory scale towards practical applications are discussed.

Highly Selective Separation Intermediate-Size Anionic Pollutants from Smaller and Larger Analogs via Thermodynamically and Kinetically Cooperative-Controlled Crystallization

Selective separation of organic species, particularly that of intermediate-size ones from their analogs, remains challenging because of their similar structures and properties. Here, a novel strategy is presented, cooperatively (thermodynamically and kinetically) controlled crystallization for the highly selective separation of intermediate-size anionic pollutants from their analogs in water through one-pot construction of cationic metal-organic frameworks (CMOFs) with higher stabilities and faster crystallization, which are based on the target anions as charge-balancing anions. 4,4'-azo-triazole and Cu2+ are chosen as suitable ligand and metal ion for CMOF construction because they can form stronger intermolecular interaction with p-toluenesulfonate anion (Ts-) compared to its analogs. For this combination, a condition is established, under which the crystallization rate of a Ts--based CMOF is remarkably high while those of analog-based CMOFs are almost zero. As a result, the faster crystallization and higher stability cooperatively endow the cationic framework with a close-to-100% selectivity for Ts- over its analogs in two-component mixtures, and this preference is retained in a practical mixture containing more than seven competing (analogs and inorganic) anions. The nature of the free Ts- anion in the cationic framework also allows the resultant CMOF to be recyclable via anion exchange.

Fluoroarene Separations in Metal-Organic Frameworks with Two Proximal Mg2+ Coordination Sites

Fluoroarenes are widely used in medicinal, agricultural, and materials chemistry, and yet their production remains a critical challenge in organic synthesis. Indeed, the nearly identical physical properties of these vital building blocks hinders their purification by traditional methods, such as flash chromatography or distillation. As a result, the Balz-Schiemann reaction is currently employed to prepare fluoroarenes instead of more atom-economical C-H fluorination reactions, which produce inseparable mixtures of regioisomers. Herein, we propose an alternative solution to this problem: the purification of mixtures of fluoroarenes using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Specifically, we demonstrate that controlling the interaction of fluoroarenes with adjacent coordinatively unsaturated Mg²⁺ centers within a MOF enables the separation of fluoroarene mixtures with unparalleled selectivities. Liquid-phase multicomponent equilibrium adsorption data and breakthrough measurements coupled with van der Waals-corrected density functional theory calculations reveal that the materials Mg₂(dobdc) (dobdc^4- = 2,5-dioxidobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) and Mg₂(m-dobdc) (m-dobdc^4- = 2,4-dioxidobenzene-1,5-dicarboxylate) are capable of separating the difluorobenzene isomers from one another. Additionally, these frameworks facilitate the separations of fluoroanisoles, fluorotoluenes, and fluorochlorobenzenes. In addition to enabling currently unfeasible separations for the production of fluoroarenes, our results suggest that carefully controlling the interaction of isomers with not one but two strong binding sites within a MOF provides a general strategy for achieving challenging liquid-phase separations.

Structural, dynamical, and photochemical properties of ortho-tetrafluoroazobenzene inside a flexible MOF under visible light irradiation

Considering porous materials as host matrices is an elegant way to enable photoswitching of non-covalently attached organic dyes even in the solid state. By focusing on the resulting optical properties as a function of loading degree and synthesis procedure, the occurring host-guest and guest-guest interactions can be determined and further exploited. In the course of this study, the photochromic behavior of ortho-tetrafluoroazobenzene (tF-AZB) inside flexible DMOF-1 was investigated from these points of view. It was found that depending on the loading degree and temperature, tF-AZB shows varying E/Z ratios and switching efficiency. For systems with low loading, reversible visible light induced isomerization was observed over ten switching cycles: Upon violet light exposure, formation of 100% E isomer was generated, while green light irradiation resulted in ∼60% Z-tF-AZB. Complementary molecular dynamics simulations at DFTB (density functional tight binding)-level revealed changing binding sites for Z-tF-AZB inside DMOF-1. For the E isomer, only low oscillations have been found, which in turn display a rare T-stacking interaction. Although the interaction strengths of the E and Z isomers with DMOF-1 are in the same range, the different mobility of both isomers due to varying binding sites explains the preference of the E isomer even upon green light exposure.

Guest-dependent single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations in porous adamantane-bearing macrocycles

An adamantane-bearing macrocycle exhibited permanent intrinsic porosity and adsorption of small guests in single-crystal-to-single-crystal fashions. The guest capture resulted in the structural transformations of supramolecular organic frameworks.

Preparation of value-added metal-organic frameworks for high-performance liquid chromatography. Towards green chromatographic columns

This work applies the concepts of green chemistry, where polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles were used as the acid-dicarboxylic linker source for the synthesis of MIL-53(Al) metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and then used as a stationary phase for the separation of various solutes and compared with MIL-53(Al) synthesized from traditional terephthalic acid. Both synthesized MIL-53(Al) MOFs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), FT-IR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and specific surface area analysis. Eight groups of standard analytes in addition to real samples were tested to evaluate the separation performance of the MIL-53(Al) packed columns in HPLC under various chromatographic conditions. Based on elution order of the studied compounds and the effects of mobile phase composition, the working mechanism was reversed phase mode in the presence of size-exclusion effects for large molecules, which exceeded the dynamic diameter of MIL-53(Al) (~7.6 Å). The effects of stationary phase sieving, mobile phase flow rate and composition, injected sample mass, and temperature were investigated relative to the chromatographic behavior of MIL-53(Al). MIL-53(Al) particle sieving before packing reduced peak broadening and significantly enhanced the chromatographic performance of the prepared columns up to 2.26 times relative to the number of theoretical plates. The MIL-53(Al) packed columns offered high-resolution separation for all studied mixtures with R_s >2 and good stability and long-term durability. At optimal conditions, the prepared columns exhibited efficiencies between 5600-63200 plates m^-1. Higher efficiencies were observed for alkylbenzenes and polyaromatic hydrocarbons as the organic linker in the MIL-53(Al) structure, which improved retention and separation of aromatics through π-π interactions. Thermodynamic parameters including ΔH, ΔS, and ΔG for the transfer of analyte from the mobile phase to the MIL-53(Al) stationary phase were studied. Compared with previously cited MOFs packed columns, the present MIL-53(Al) columns gave comparable selectivity and much better efficiency for most of the studied chemicals at optimum conditions, indicating the feasibility of MIL-53(Al) as a stationary phase for HPLC applications.

Specific Isotope-Responsive Breathing Transition in Flexible Metal-Organic Frameworks

An isotope-selective responsive system based on molecular recognition in porous materials has potential for the storage and purification of isotopic mixtures but is considered unachievable because of the almost identical physicochemical properties of the isotopes. Herein, a unique isotope-responsive breathing transition of the flexible metal-organic framework (MOF), MIL-53(Al), which can selectively recognize and respond to only D₂ molecules through a secondary breathing transition, is reported. This novel phenomenon is examined using in situ neutron diffraction experiments under the same conditions for H₂ and D₂ sorption experiments. This work can guide the development of a novel isotope-selective recognition system and provide opportunities to fabricate flexible MOF systems for energy-efficient purification of the isotopic mixture.

Intermediate-sized molecular sieving of styrene from larger and smaller analogues

Molecular sieving can lead to ultrahigh selectivity and low regeneration energy because it completely excludes all larger molecules via a size restriction mechanism. However, it allows adsorption of all molecules smaller than the pore aperture and so separations of complicated mixtures can be hindered. Here, we report an intermediate-sized molecular sieving (iSMS) effect in a metal-organic framework (MAF-41) designed with restricted flexibility, which also exhibits superhydrophobicity and ultrahigh thermal/chemical stabilities. Single-component isotherms and computational simulations show adsorption of styrene but complete exclusion of the larger analogue ethylbenzene (because it exceeds the maximal aperture size) and smaller toluene/benzene molecules that have insufficient adsorption energy to open the cavity. Mixture adsorption experiments show a high styrene selectivity of 1,250 for an ethylbenzene/styrene mixture and 3,300 for an ethylbenzene/styrene/toluene/benzene mixture (orders of magnitude higher than previous reports). This produces styrene with a purity of 99.9%+ in a single adsorption-desorption cycle. Controlling/restricting flexibility is the key for iSMS and can be a promising strategy for discovering other exceptional properties.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Food Safety

Food safety is a prevalent concern around the world. As such, detection, removal, and control of risks and hazardous substances present from harvest to consumption will always be necessary. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of functional materials, possess unique physical and chemical properties, demonstrating promise in food safety applications. In this review, the synthesis and porosity of MOFs are first introduced by some representative examples that pertain to the field of food safety. Following that, the application of MOFs and MOF-based materials in food safety monitoring, food processing, covering preservation, sanitation, and packaging is overviewed. Future perspectives, as well as potential opportunities and challenges faced by MOFs in this field will also be discussed. This review aims to promote the development and progress of MOF chemistry and application research in the field of food safety, potentially leading to novel solutions.

Nonporous Adaptive Crystals of Pillararenes

Porous materials with high surface areas have drawn more and more attention in recent years because of their wide applications in physical adsorption and energy-efficient adsorptive separation processes. Most of the reported porous materials are macromolecular porous materials, such as zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), or porous coordination polymers (PCPs), and porous organic polymers (POPs) or covalent organic frameworks (COFs), in which the building blocks are linked together by covalent or coordinative bonds. These materials are barely soluble and thus are not solution-processable. Furthermore, the relatively low chemical, moisture, and thermal stability of most MOFs and COFs cannot be neglected. On the other hand, molecular porous materials such as porous organic cages (POCs), which have been developed very recently, also show promising applications in adsorption and separation processes. They can be soluble in organic solvents, making them solution-processable materials. However, they are usually sensitive to acid/base and humid environments since most of them are based on dynamic covalent bonding. These macromolecular and molecular porous materials usually have two similar features: high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas and rigid pore structures, which are stable during adsorption and separation processes. In this Account, we describe a novel class of solid materials for adsorption and separation, nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs), which function at the supramolecular level. They are nonporous in the initial crystalline state, but the intrinsic or extrinsic porosity of the crystals along with a crystal structure transformation is induced by preferable guest molecules. Unlike solvent-induced crystal polymorphism phenomena of common organic crystals that occur at the solid-liquid phase, NACs capture vaporized guests at the solid-gas phase. Upon removal of guest molecules, the crystal structure transforms back to the original nonporous structure. Here we focus on the discussion of pillararene-based NACs for adsorption and separation and the crystal structure transformations from the initial nonporous crystalline state to new guest-loaded structures during the adsorption and separation processes. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, gas chromatography, and solution NMR spectroscopy are the main techniques to verify the adsorption and separation processes and the structural transformations. Compared with traditional porous materials, NACs of pillararenes have several advantages. First, their preparation is simple and cheap, and they can be synthesized on a large scale to meet practical demands. Second, pillararenes have better chemical, moisture, and thermal stability than crystalline MOFs, COFs, and POCs, which are usually constructed on the basis of reversible chemical bonds. Third, pillararenes are soluble in many common organic solvents, which means that they can be easily processed in solution. Fourth, their regeneration is simple and they can be reused many times with no decrease in performance. It is expected that this class of materials will not only exert a significant influence on scientific research but also show practical applications in chemical industry.

Host-guest interaction of styrene and ethylbenzene in MIL-53 studied by solid-state NMR

Solid-state NMR was utilized to explore the host-guest interaction between adsorbate and adsorbent at atomic level to understand the separation mechanism of styrene (St) and ethylbenzene (EB) in MIL-53(Al). ¹³C-²⁷Al double-resonance NMR experiments revealed that the host-guest interaction between St and MIL-53 was much stronger than that of EB adsorption. In addition, ¹³C DIPSHIFT experiments suggested that the adsorbed St was less mobile than EB confined inside the MIL-53 pore. Furthermore, the host-guest interaction model between St, EB and MIL-53 was established on the basis of the spatial proximities information extracted from 2D ¹H-¹H homo-nuclear correlation NMR experiments. According to the experimental observation from solid-state NMR, it was found that the presence of π-π interaction between St and MIL-53 resulted in the stronger host-guest interaction and less mobility of St. This work provides direct experimental evidence for understanding the separation mechanism of St and EB using MIL-53 as an adsorbent.

Smart nanoporous metal–organic frameworks by embedding photochromic molecules – state of the art and future perspectives

The opportunities, properties and perspectives of smart photochromic materials, which are obtained by embedment of stimuli-responsive molecules in nanoporous MOFs (metal–organic frameworks), both in bulk and in thin films, are reviewed.
