Evidence for the Pairwise Disposition of Grafting Sites on Highly Dehydroxylated Silicas via Their Reactions with Ga(CH3)3

Selective oxidation of glycerol mediated by surface plasmon of gold nanoparticles deposited on titanium dioxide nanowires

This paper describes an alternative method for the in situ synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with a particle size of less than 3 nm, using nanoreactors formed by reverse micelles of 1,4-bis-(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate sodium (AOT) and nanoparticle stabilization with l-cysteine, which favor the preparation of nanoparticles with size and shape control, which are homogeneously dispersed (1% by weight) on the support of titanium dioxide nanowires (TNWs). To study the activity and selectivity of the prepared catalyst (AuNPs@TNWs), an aqueous solution of 40 mM glycerol was irradiated with a green laser (λ = 530 nm, power = 100 mW) in the presence of the catalyst and O2 as an oxidant at 22 °C for 6 h, obtaining a glycerol conversion of 86% with a selectivity towards hydroxypyruvic acid (HA) of more than 90%. From the control and reactions, we concluded that the Ti-OH groups promote the glycerol adsorption on the nanowires surface and the surface plasmon of the gold nanoparticles favors the selectivity of the reaction towards the hydroxypyruvic acid.

Formation of Strong Boron Lewis Acid Sites on Silica

Bis(1-methyl-ortho-carboranyl)borane (HBMeoCb2) is a very strong Lewis acid that reacts with the isolated silanols present on silica partially dehydroxylated at 700 °C (SiO2-700) to form the well-defined Lewis site MeoCb2B(OSi≡) (1) and H2. 11B{1H} magic-angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data of 1 are consistent with that of a three-coordinate boron site. Contacting 1 with O═PEt3 (triethylphosphine oxide TEPO) and measuring 31P{1H} MAS NMR spectra show that 1 preserves the strong Lewis acidity of HBMeoCb2. Hydride ion affinity and fluoride ion affinity calculations using small molecules analogs of 1 also support the strong Lewis acidity of the boron sites in this material. Reactions of 1 with Cp2Hf(13CH3)2 show that the Lewis sites are capable of abstracting methide groups from Hf to form [Cp2Hf-13CH3][H313C-B(MeoCb2)OSi≡], but with a low overall efficiency.

Silanol-Assisted High-Yield Nanofabrication of SnO2 Single Crystals with Highly Tunable and Ordered Mesoporosity

Highly ordered mesoporous materials with a single-crystalline structure have attracted broad interest due to their wide applications from catalysis to energy conversion/storage, but constructing them with good controllability and high yields remains a highly daunting task. Herein, we construct a new class of three-dimensionally ordered mesoporous SnO2 single crystals (3DOm-SnO2) with well-defined facets and excellent mesopore tunability. Mechanism studies demonstrate that the silanol groups on ordered silica nanospheres (3DO-SiO2) can induce the efficient heterogeneous crystallization of uniform SnO2 single crystals in its periodic voids by following the hard and soft acid and base theory, affording a much higher yield of ∼96% for 3DOm-SnO2 than that of its solid counterpart prepared in the absence of 3DO-SiO2 (∼1.5%). Benefiting from its permanent ordered mesopores and favorable electronic structure, Pd-supported 3DOm-SnO2 can efficiently catalyze the unprecedented sequential hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenylacetylene to produce 4-nitrostyrene, then 4-nitroethylbenzene, and finally 4-aminoethylbenzene. DFT calculations further reveal the favorable synergistic effect between Pd and 3DOm-SnO2 via moderate electron transfer for realizing this sequential hydrogenation reaction. Our work underlines the crucial role of silanol groups in inducing the high-yield heterogeneous crystallization of 3DOm-SnO2, shedding light on the rational design and construction of various 3DO single crystals that are of great practical significance.

Nature of GaOx Shells Grown on Silica by Atomic Layer Deposition

Gallia-based shells with a thickness varying from a submonolayer to ca. 2.5 nm were prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD) using trimethylgallium, ozone, and partially dehydroxylated silica, followed by calcination at 500 °C. Insight into the atomic-scale structure of these shells was obtained by high-field 71Ga solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments and the modeling of X-ray differential pair distribution function data, complemented by Ga K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy and 29Si dynamic nuclear polarization surface enhanced NMR spectroscopy (DNP SENS) studies. When applying one ALD cycle, the grown submonolayer contains mostly tetracoordinate Ga sites with Si atoms in the second coordination sphere ([4]Ga(Si)) and, according to 15N DNP SENS using pyridine as the probe molecule, both strong Lewis acid sites (LAS) and strong Brønsted acid sites (BAS), consistent with the formation of gallosilicate Ga-O-Si and Ga-μ2-OH-Si species. The shells obtained using five and ten ALD cycles display characteristics of amorphous gallia (GaOx), i.e., an increased relative fraction of pentacoordinate sites ([5]Ga(Ga)), the presence of mild LAS, and a decreased relative abundance of strong BAS. The prepared Ga1-, Ga5-, and Ga10-SiO2-500 materials catalyze the dehydrogenation of isobutane to isobutene, and their catalytic performance correlates with the relative abundance and strength of LAS and BAS, viz., Ga1-SiO2-500, a material with a higher relative fraction of strong LAS, is more active and stable compared to Ga5- and Ga10-SiO2-500. In contrast, related ALD-derived Al1-, Al5-, and Al10-SiO2-500 materials do not catalyze the dehydrogenation of isobutane and this correlates with the lack of strong LAS in these materials that instead feature abundant strong BAS formed via the atomic-scale mixing of Al sites with silica, leading to Al-μ2-OH-Si sites. Our results suggest that [4]Ga(Si) sites provide strong Lewis acidity and drive the dehydrogenation activity, while the appearance of [5]Ga(Ga) sites with mild Lewis activity is associated with catalyst deactivation through coking. Overall, the atomic-level insights into the structure of the GaOx-based materials prepared in this work provide a guide to design active Ga-based catalysts by a rational tailoring of Lewis and Brønsted acidity (nature, strength, and abundance).

Effects of surface acidity on the structure of organometallics supported on oxide surfaces

Well-defined organometallics supported on high surface area oxides are promising heterogeneous catalysts. An important design factor in these materials is how the metal interacts with the functionalities on an oxide support, commonly anionic X-type ligands derived from the reaction of an organometallic M-R with an -OH site on the oxide. The metal can either form a covalent M-O bond or form an electrostatic M⁺⋯^-O ion-pair, which impacts how well-defined organometallics will interact with substrates in catalytic reactions. A less common reaction pathway involves the reaction of a Lewis site on the oxide with the organometallic, resulting in abstraction to form an ion-pair, which is relevant to industrial olefin polymerization catalysts. This Feature Article views the spectrum of reactivity between an organometallic and an oxide through the prism of Brønsted and/or Lewis acidity of surface sites and draws analogies to the molecular frame where Lewis and Brønsted acids are known to form reactive ion-pairs. Applications of the well-defined sites developed in this article are also discussed.

The coordination chemistry of oxide and nanocarbon materials

Understanding how a ligand affects the steric and electronic properties of a metal is the cornerstone of the inorganic chemistry enterprise. What happens when the ligand is an extended surface? This question is central to the design and implementation of state-of-the-art functional materials containing transition metals. This perspective will describe how these two very different sets of extended surfaces can form well-defined coordination complexes with metals. In the Green formalism, functionalities on oxide surfaces react with inorganics to form species that contain X-type or LX-type interactions between the metal and the oxide. Carbon surfaces are neutral L-type ligands; this perspective focuses on carbons that donate six electrons to a metal. The nature of this interaction depends on the curvature, and thereby orbital overlap, between the metal and the extended π-system from the nanocarbon.

Water on hydroxylated silica surfaces: Work of adhesion, interfacial entropy, and droplet wetting

In the last few years, much attention has been devoted to the control of the wettability properties of surfaces modified with functional groups. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is one of the powerful tools for microscopic analysis providing visual images and mean geometrical shapes of the contact line, e.g., of nanoscale droplets on solid surfaces, while profound understanding of wetting demands quantitative evaluation of the solid-liquid (SL) interfacial tension. In the present work, we examined the wetting of water on neutral and regular hydroxylated silica surfaces with five different area densities of OH groups ρ_A ^OH, ranging from a non-hydroxylated surface to a fully hydroxylated one through two theoretical methods: thermodynamic integration (TI) and MD simulations of quasi-two-dimensional equilibrium droplets. For the former, the work of adhesion needed to quasi-statically strip the water film off the solid surface was computed by the phantom wall TI scheme to evaluate the SL interfacial free energy, whereas for the latter, the apparent contact angle θ_app was calculated from the droplet density distribution. The theoretical contact angle θ_YD and the apparent one θ_app, both indicating the enhancement of wettability by an increase in ρ_A ^OH, presented good quantitative agreement, especially for non-hydroxylated and highly hydroxylated surfaces. On partially hydroxylated surfaces, in which θ_YD and θ_app slightly deviated, the Brownian motion of the droplet was suppressed, possibly due to the pinning of the contact line around the hydroxyl groups. Relations between work of adhesion, interfacial energy, and entropy loss were also analyzed, and their influence on the wettability was discussed.

Olefin oligomerization by main group Ga3+ and Zn2+ single site catalysts on SiO2

In heterogeneous catalysis, olefin oligomerization is typically performed on immobilized transition metal ions, such as Ni²⁺ and Cr³⁺. Here we report that silica-supported, single site catalysts containing immobilized, main group Zn²⁺ and Ga³⁺ ion sites catalyze ethylene and propylene oligomerization to an equilibrium distribution of linear olefins with rates similar to that of Ni²⁺. The molecular weight distribution of products formed on Zn²⁺ is similar to Ni²⁺, while Ga³⁺ forms higher molecular weight olefins. In situ spectroscopic and computational studies suggest that oligomerization unexpectedly occurs by the Cossee-Arlman mechanism via metal hydride and metal alkyl intermediates formed during olefin insertion and β-hydride elimination elementary steps. Initiation of the catalytic cycle is proposed to occur by heterolytic C-H dissociation of ethylene, which occurs at about 250 °C where oligomerization is catalytically relevant. This work illuminates new chemistry for main group metal catalysts with potential for development of new oligomerization processes.

Chemoselective Hydrogenation with Supported Organoplatinum(IV) Catalyst on Zn(II)-Modified Silica

Well-defined organoplatinum(IV) sites were grafted on a Zn(II)-modified SiO₂ support via surface organometallic chemistry in toluene at room temperature. Solid-state spectroscopies including XAS, DRIFTS, DRUV-vis, and solid-state (SS) NMR enhanced by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), as well as TPR-H₂ and TEM techniques revealed highly dispersed (methylcyclopentadienyl)methylplatinum(IV) sites on the surface ((MeCp)PtMe/Zn/SiO₂, 1). In addition, computational modeling suggests that the surface reaction of (MeCp)PtMe₃ with Zn(II)-modified SiO₂ support is thermodynamically favorable (Δ G = -12.4 kcal/mol), likely due to the increased acidity of the hydroxyl group, as indicated by NH₃-TPD and DNP-enhanced ¹⁷O{¹H} SSNMR. In situ DRIFTS and XAS hydrogenation experiments reveal the probable formation of a surface Pt(IV)-H upon hydrogenolysis of Pt-Me groups. The heterogenized organoplatinum(IV)-hydride sites catalyze the selective partial hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene to butenes (up to 95%) and the reduction of nitrobenzene derivatives to anilines (up to 99%) with excellent tolerance of reduction-sensitive functional groups (olefin, carbonyl, nitrile, halogens) under mild reaction conditions.

Surface chemical heterogeneity modulates silica surface hydration

An in-depth knowledge of the interaction of water with amorphous silica is critical to fundamental studies of interfacial hydration water, as well as to industrial processes such as catalysis, nanofabrication, and chromatography. Silica has a tunable surface comprising hydrophilic silanol groups and moderately hydrophobic siloxane groups that can be interchanged through thermal and chemical treatments. Despite extensive studies of silica surfaces, the influence of surface hydrophilicity and chemical topology on the molecular properties of interfacial water is not well understood. In this work, we controllably altered the surface silanol density, and measured surface water diffusivity using Overhauser dynamic nuclear polarization (ODNP) and complementary silica-silica interaction forces across water using a surface forces apparatus (SFA). The results show that increased silanol density generally leads to slower water diffusivity and stronger silica-silica repulsion at short aqueous separations (less than ∼4 nm). Both techniques show sharp changes in hydration properties at intermediate silanol densities (2.0-2.9 nm^-2). Molecular dynamics simulations of model silica-water interfaces corroborate the increase in water diffusivity with silanol density, and furthermore show that even on a smooth and crystalline surface at a fixed silanol density, adjusting the spatial distribution of silanols results in a range of surface water diffusivities spanning ∼10%. We speculate that a critical silanol cluster size or connectivity parameter could explain the sharp transition in our results, and can modulate wettability, colloidal interactions, and surface reactions, and thus is a phenomenon worth further investigation on silica and chemically heterogeneous surfaces.

Silica-supported isolated gallium sites as highly active, selective and stable propane dehydrogenation catalysts

Single-site gallium centers on the surface of silica are prepared via grafting of [Ga(OSi(OtBu)3)3(THF)] on SiO2-700 followed by a thermolysis step. The resulting surface species corresponds to well-defined tetra-coordinate gallium single-sites, [([triple bond, length as m-dash]SiO)3Ga(XOSi[triple bond, length as m-dash])] (X = -H or [triple bond, length as m-dash]Si) according to IR, X-ray absorption near-edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. These gallium sites show high activity, selectivity and stability for propane dehydrogenation with an initial turnover frequency of 20 per h per gallium center, propylene selectivity of ≥93% and remarkable stability over 20 h. The stability of the catalyst probably results from site-isolation of the active site on a non-reducible support such as silica, diminishing facile reduction typical of Ga2O3-based catalysts.

Well-defined silica supported aluminum hydride: another step towards the utopian single site dream?

Reaction of triisobutylaluminum with SBA15₇₀₀ at room temperature occurs by two parallel pathways involving either silanol or siloxane bridges. It leads to the formation of a well-defined bipodal [( Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> SiO)₂Al–CH₂CH(CH₃)₂] 1a, silicon isobutyl [Si–CH₂CH(CH₃)₂] 1b and a silicon hydride [Si–H] 1c. Their structural identity was characterized by FT-IR and advanced solid-state NMR spectroscopies (¹H, ¹³C, ²⁹Si, ²⁷Al and 2D multiple quantum), elemental and gas phase analysis, and DFT calculations. The reaction involves the formation of a highly reactive monopodal intermediate: [SiO–Al–[CH₂CH(CH₃)₂]₂], with evolution of isobutane. This intermediate undergoes two parallel routes: transfer of either one isobutyl fragment or of one hydride to an adjacent silicon atom. Both processes occur by opening of a strained siloxane bridge, Si–O–Si but with two different mechanisms, showing that the reality of “single site” catalyst may be an utopia: DFT calculations indicate that isobutyl transfer occurs via a simple metathesis between the Al-isobutyl and O–Si bonds, while hydride transfer occurs via a two steps mechanism, the first one is a β-H elimination to Al with elimination of isobutene, whereas the second is a metathesis step between the formed Al–H bond and a O–Si bond. Thermal treatment of 1a (at 250 °C) under high vacuum (10^–5 mbar) generates Al–H through a β-H elimination of isobutyl fragment. These supported well-defined Al–H which are highly stable with time, are tetra, penta and octa coordinated as demonstrated by IR and ²⁷Al–¹H J-HMQC NMR spectroscopy. All these observations indicate that surfaces atoms around the site of grafting play a considerable role in the reactivity of a single site system.

The use of a well-defined surface organometallic complex as a probe molecule: [(SiO)TaVCl2Me2] shows different isolated silanol sites on the silica surface

Organosilicon platforms: bridging homogeneous, heterogeneous, and bioinspired catalysis

Organosilicon compounds form versatile structures such as cubic metallasiloxanes, cage-like silsesquioxanes, macromolecular nanocages, and flexible dendrimers and linear metallasiloxanes, and are useful as catalysts, ligands for metal complexes, and catalyst supports.

Catalytic consequences of open and closed grafted Al(III)-calix[4]arene complexes for hydride and oxo transfer reactions

An approach for the control and understanding of supported molecular catalysts is demonstrated with the design and synthesis of open and closed variants of a grafted Lewis acid active site, consisting of Al(III)-calix[4]arene complexes on the surface of silica. The calixarene acts as a molecular template that enforces open and closed resting-state coordination geometries surrounding the metal active sites, due to its lower-rim substituents as well as site isolation by virtue of its steric bulk. These sites are characterized and used to elucidate mechanistic details and connectivity requirements for reactions involving hydride and oxo transfer. The consequence of controlling open versus closed configurations of the grafted Lewis acid site is demonstrated by the complete lack of observed activity of the closed site for Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reduction; whereas, the open variant of this catalyst has an MPV reduction activity that is virtually identical to previously reported soluble molecular Al(III)-calix[4]arene catalysts. In contrast, for olefin epoxidation using tert-butyl-hydroperoxide as oxidant, the open and closed catalysts exhibit similar activity. This observation suggests that for olefin epoxidation catalysis using Lewis acids as catalyst and organic hydroperoxide as oxidant, covalent binding of the hydroperoxide is not required, and instead dative coordination to the Lewis acid center is sufficient for catalytic oxo transfer. This latter result is supported by density functional theory calculations of the transition state for olefin epoxidation catalysis, using molecular analogs of the open and closed catalysts.

Nature and structure of aluminum surface sites grafted on silica from a combination of high-field aluminum-27 solid-state NMR spectroscopy and first-principles calculations

The determination of the nature and structure of surface sites after chemical modification of large surface area oxides such as silica is a key point for many applications and challenging from a spectroscopic point of view. This has been, for instance, a long-standing problem for silica reacted with alkylaluminum compounds, a system typically studied as a model for a supported methylaluminoxane and aluminum cocatalyst. While (27)Al solid-state NMR spectroscopy would be a method of choice, it has been difficult to apply this technique because of large quadrupolar broadenings. Here, from a combined use of the highest stable field NMR instruments (17.6, 20.0, and 23.5 T) and ultrafast magic angle spinning (>60 kHz), high-quality spectra were obtained, allowing isotropic chemical shifts, quadrupolar couplings, and asymmetric parameters to be extracted. Combined with first-principles calculations, these NMR signatures were then assigned to actual structures of surface aluminum sites. For silica (here SBA-15) reacted with triethylaluminum, the surface sites are in fact mainly dinuclear Al species, grafted on the silica surface via either two terminal or two bridging siloxy ligands. Tetrahedral sites, resulting from the incorporation of Al inside the silica matrix, are also seen as minor species. No evidence for putative tri-coordinated Al atoms has been found.
