Abstract
The prochiral 4-(allyloxy)hepta-1,6-diynes, optionally modified in the positions 1 and 7 with an alkyl or ester group, undergo a chemoselective ring-closing enyne metathesis yielding racemic 4-alkenyl-2-alkynyl-3,6-dihydro-2H-pyrans. Among the catalysts tested, Grubbs 1st generation precatalyst in the presence of ethene (Mori conditions) gave superior results compared to the more stable Grubbs or Hoveyda-Grubbs 2nd generation precatalysts. This is probably caused by a suppression of the subsequent side-reactions of the enyne metathesis product with ethene. On the other hand, the 2nd generation precatalysts gave better yields in the absence of ethene. The metathesis products, containing both a triple bond and a conjugated system, can be successfully orthogonally modified. For example, the metathesis product of 5-(allyloxy)nona-2,7-diyne reacted chemo- and stereoselectively in a Diels-Alder reaction with N-phenylmaleimide affording the tricyclic products as a mixture of two separable diastereoisomers, the configuration of which was estimated by DFT computations. The reported enediyne metathesis paves the way to the enantioselective enyne metathesis yielding chiral building blocks for compounds with potential biological activity, e.g., norsalvinorin or cacospongionolide B.

Abstract
A set of nitro-activated ruthenium-based Hoveyda-Grubbs type olefin metathesis catalysts bearing sterically modified N-hetero-cyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been obtained, characterised and studied in a set of model metathesis reactions. It was found that catalysts bearing standard SIMes and SIPr ligands (4a and 4b) gave the best results in metathesis of substrates with more accessible C-C double bonds. At the same time, catalysts bearing engineered naphthyl-substituted NHC ligands (4d-e) exhibited high activity towards formation of tetrasubstituted C-C double bonds, the reaction which was traditionally Achilles' heel of the nitro-activated Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst.

Abstract
Five new complexes [RuCl2(SIMes)(Ind)(O-pXC5H4)] bearing different para-substituted triphenylphosphites (X = H, OCH3, CF3, Cl, SF5 and CN) were synthesised and used to study the effect of the electronic properties of the phosphite on olefin metathesis activity. Investigations of the physical properties of the new ligands and complexes were performed using physicochemical and DFT calculations. The catalytic activity of the complexes was benchmarked in challenging ring closing metathesis transformations featuring the formation of tetra-substituted double bonds. Complex [RuCl2(SIMes)(Ind)P(O-pCF3C5H4)3] (3c) exhibited a particularly high catalytic activity, superior to state-of-the-art catalysts, and was further tested on a wide range of substrates.

Abstract
There has been a burst in the number and variety of available ionization techniques to use mass spectrometry to monitor chemical reactions in and on liquids. Chemists have gained the capability to access chemistry at unprecedented timescales, and monitor reactions and detect intermediates under almost any set of conditions. Herein, recently developed ionization techniques that facilitate mechanistic studies of chemical processes are reviewed. This is followed by a discussion of our perspective on the judicious application of these and similar techniques in order to study reaction mechanisms.

Abstract
Propargylic difluorides 1 were used as starting substrates in a combination of cross-enyne metathesis and Diels–Alder reactions. Thus, the reaction of 1 with ethylene in the presence of 2nd generation Hoveyda–Grubbs catalyst generates a diene moiety which in situ reacts with a wide variety of dienophiles giving rise to a small family of new fluorinated carbo- and heterocyclic derivatives in moderate to good yields. This is a complementary protocol to the one previously described by our research group, which involved the use of 1,7-octadiene as an internal source of ethylene.

Abstract
Ethylene, the simplest alkene, is the most abundantly synthesized organic molecule by volume. It is readily incorporated into transition-metal-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions through migratory insertions into alkylmetal intermediates. Because of its D2h symmetry, only one insertion outcome is possible. This limits byproduct formation and greatly simplifies analysis. As described within this Minireview, many carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions incorporate a molecule (or more) of ethylene at ambient pressure and temperature. In many cases, a useful substituted alkene is incorporated into the product.

Abstract
The 1,1-difunctionalization of ethylene, with aryl/vinyl/heteroaryl transmetalating agents and vinyl electrophiles, is reported. The reaction is high-yielding under a low pressure of ethylene, and regioselectivity is generally high for the 1,1-disubstituted product. The process is highlighted by the use of heteroaromatic cross-coupling reagents, which have not been competent reaction partners in previously reported efforts.
