Simultaneous Bridge-Localized and Mixed-Valence Character in Diruthenium Radical Cations Featuring Diethynylaromatic Bridging Ligands

Syntheses, crystal structures and MMCT properties of diruthenium-based cyanido-bridged RuV/VI2-NC-RuII complexes

The goal of this study was to investigate how the electron-donating capability around the lower valent metal ion and the electron-accepting capability of the higher valent metal ion influence metal to metal charge transfer (MMCT) properties in mixed-valence complexes. A series of trinuclear ruthenium complexes represented as [Ru2(ap-4-Me)3(CH3COO)NCRuCpMex(dppe)][PF6] (CpMex = polymethylcyclopentadienyl, x = 0, 1, and 5; and dppe = 1, 2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, ap-4-Me = 2-anilino-4-methylpyridine) and their one-electron oxidized products were synthesized and fully characterized. The UV-vis-NIR spectra confirmed that as the electron donor character of the CpMex(dppe)RuCN fragment enhanced or the electron-accepting capability of the higher valent diruthenium cluster increased, the RuII → RuV2 or RuVI2 Ru2 MMCT bands shifted to lower energies, which was supported by TDDFT calculations.

Different delocalized ranges in mixed valence cyanido-metal-bridged Fe-Ru-Fe complexes controlled by terminal ligand substitution modification

In order to investigate the properties of metal to metal charge transfer (MMCT) influenced by the relative energy level between the bridging unit and the terminal unit, two groups of heterotrimetallic cyanido-metal-bridged complexes, trans-[Cp(dppe)Fe-CN-Ru(MeOpy)4-NC-Fe(dppe)Cp][X]n (1[X]n; n = 2, 3, or 4; X = PF6 or BF4) (Cp = cyclopentadiene, dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, MeOpy = 4-methoxypyridine) and [Cp*(dppe)Fe-CN-Ru(MeOpy)4-NC-Fe(dppe)Cp*] [X]n (2[X]n; Cp* = 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadiene; n = 2, 3, or 4; X = PF6 or BF4) were synthesized and fully characterized. The crystallography data suggest different oxidation sites in the ground state for one-electron oxidation products 13+ and 23+, and the electrochemical and Mössbauer spectra suggest that in the one-electron oxidation compounds 13+, the charge is delocalized all along the trimetal backbone Fe-Ru-Fe, while in 23+, the charge is rather delocalized between the two metal parts Fe-Ru. Further oxidation of N3+ gives N4+ (N = 1 or 2), during which a spin transfer towards the terminal units is observed in both series.

Functionalised organometallic photoswitches containing dihydropyrene units

Functionalising organic molecular photoswitches with metal complexes has been shown to alter and enhance their switching states. These organometallic photoswitches provide a promising basis for novel smart molecular materials and molecular electronic devices. We have detailed the synthesis and characterisation of mono- and bimetallic half-sandwich ruthenium and iron complexes functionalised with alkynyl dihydropyrenes (DHP). Their electronic and photophysical properties were determined by the use of chemical, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques. The introduction of the metal alkynyl moiety allows access to additional redox and protonation states not accessible by the DHP alone. An additional metal alkynyl moiety inhibits observable photochromic switching. Analysis of the NIR and IR bands in the mixed valence complexes suggests there is a high degree of charge delocalisation across the DHP.

Enabling Valence Delocalization in Iron(III) Macrocyclic Complexes through Ring Unsaturation

The complexes [FeIII(HMC)(C2DMA)2]CF3SO3 ([2]OTf) and [FeIII(HMTI)(C2Y)2]CF3SO3 ([3a-c]OTf) have been prepared and thoroughly characterized (HMC = 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane; HMTI = 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-1,3,8,10-tetraene; Y = Fc (ferrocenyl, [3a]OTf), 4-(N,N-dimethyl)anilino (DMA, [3b]OTf), or 4-(N,N-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)anilino (TPA, [3c]OTf); OTf- = CF3SO3-)). Vibrational and electronic absorption spectroelectrochemical analyses following one-electron oxidation of the ethynyl substituent Y revealed evidence of strong coupling in the resultant mixed valent species for all HMTI-based complexes. However, the analogous mixed valent ion based on [2]OTf appeared to be more localized. Thus, the tetra-imino macrocycle HMTI has enabled significant valence delocalization along the -C2-FeIII-C2- bridge. Electron paramagnetic resonance and Mössbauer spectroscopic studies of [3b]OTf reveal that the π-acidity of HMTI lowers the energy of the FeIII dπ orbitals compared to the purely σ-donating HMC. This observation provides a basis for the interpretation of the macrocycle-dependent valence (de)localization.

Acene Size-Dependent Transition of The Radical Centers From the Metal to The Acene Parts In Monocationic Dinuclear (Diethynylacene)diyl Complexes

Controlling radical localization/delocalization is important for functional materials. The present paper describes synthesis and results of electrochemical, spectroscopic, and theoretical studies of diruthenium (p-diethynylacene)diyl complexes, Me₃ Si-(C≡C)₂ -Ru(dppe)₂ -C≡C-Ar-C≡C-Ru(dppe)₂ -(C≡C)₂ -SiMe₃ (1-6) (dppe: 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane), and their monocationic radical species ([1]⁺ -[6]⁺ ). The HOMO-LUMO energy gaps can be finely tuned by the acene rings in the bridging ligands installed, as indicated by the absorption maxima of the electronic spectra of 1-6 ranging from the UV region even to the NIR region. The cationic species [1]⁺ -[6]⁺ show two characteristic NIR bands, which are ascribed to the charge resonance (CR) and π-π* transition bands, as revealed by spectroelectrochemistry. Expansion of the acene rings in [1]⁺ -[6]⁺ causes (1) blue shifts of the CR bands and red shifts of the π-π* transition bands and (2) charge localization on the acene parts as evidenced by the ESR, DFT and TD-DFT analyses. Notably, the monocationic complexes of the larger acene derivatives are characterized as the non-classical acene-localized radicals.

Effects of cis/trans-Configuration and Ligand Substitution of the Cyanidometal Bridge on Metal to Metal Charge Transfer Properties in Mixed Valence Complexes

To investigate the effects of cis/trans-configuration of the cyanidometal bridge and the electron donating ability of the auxiliary ligand on the cyanidometal bridge on metal to metal charge transfer (MMCT) in cyanidometal-bridged mixed valence compounds, two groups of trinuclear cyanidometal-bridged compounds cis/trans-[Cp(dppe)Fe(μ-NC)Ru(4,4'-dmbpy)₂ (μ-CN)Fe(dppe)Cp][PF₆ ]_n (n=2 (cis/trans-1[PF₆ ]₂ ), 3 (cis/trans-1[PF₆ ]₃ ), 4 (cis/trans-1[PF₆ ]₄ )) and cis/trans-[Cp(dppe)Fe(μ-NC)Ru(bpy)₂ (μ-CN)Fe(dppe)Cp][PF₆ ]₃ (cis/trans-2[PF₆ ]₃ ) were synthesized and fully characterized. The experimental results indicate that for these one- and two-electron oxidation mixed valence compounds, the trans-configuration compounds are more beneficial for MMCT than the cis-configuration compounds, and increasing the electron donating ability of the auxiliary ligand on the cyanidometal bridge is also conductive to MMCT. Moreover, compounds cis/trans-1[PF₆ ]_n (n=3, 4) and cis/trans-2[PF₆ ]₃ belong to localized compounds by analyzing the experimental characterization results, supported by the TDDFT calculations.

Controllable Electron Transfer in Mixed-Valence Bridged Norbornylogous Compounds: Ab Initio Calculation Combined with a Parametric Model and Through-Bond and Through-Space Interpretation

In the context of a computationally guided approach to the controllable electron transfer in mixed-valence (MV) systems, in this article, we study the electron transfer (ET) in the series of oxidized norbornadiene C₇H₈ (I) and its polycyclic derivatives, C₁₂H₁₂ (II), C₁₇H₁₆, (III), C₂₇H₂₄ (IV), and C₃₂H₂₈ (V), with variable lengths of the bridge connecting redox sites. The work combines an ab initio CASSCF evaluation of the electronic structure of systems I-V with the parametric description in the framework of the biorbital two-mode vibronic model. The model involves coupling with the "breathing" mode and intercenter vibration modulating the distances between the redox fragments. The ab initio calculations were performed for two types of optimized structures of I-V: (a) charge-localized global minimum (C_s) and (b) symmetric configuration (C_2v) with the delocalized charge. This allows one to estimate the potential barrier separating charge-localized configurations as well as vibronic coupling parameters and the electron transfer integral. Along with the adiabatic approach, the quantum-mechanical analysis of the vibronic levels has been applied to precisely estimate the quantum effect of tunneling splitting. We estimate the "through-space" and "through-bond" contributions to the parameters interrelated with the charge transfer (CT). The through-space effect proves to be a major factor of ET at a short distance between the redox centers, whereas the through-bond contribution is dominant at a long distance. Vibronic coupling under the condition of through-space ET leads to the localization of the positive charge on the π-chromophore, while the through-bond component of ET results in compensating σ-shifts and subsequent charge delocalization over the bridge. The limitations of the parametric approach were discussed in the context of the two components contributing to the ET. Particularly, the bridge polarization in the course of through-bond ET proves to be beyond the basis of the employed parametric model.

Estimation of Electron Distribution over Dinuclear Organometallic Molecular Wires by "IR Tag" Analysis of Ancillary Acyl-Cp Ligands

Understanding the details of electronic properties of mixed-valence (MV) states of organometallic molecular wires is essential to gain insights into electron transfer phenomena. Although the field of MV chemistry is matured, there remain issues to be solved, which cannot be accessed by the conventional analytical methods. Here, we describe the synthesis and properties of diruthenium bridging (diethynylbenzene)diyl wires, (μ-p and m-C≡C-C₆H₄-C≡C){RuCp^R(dppe)}₂ 1, with the acyl-substituted cyclopentadienyl rings [Cp^R: Cp^e; η⁵-C₅H₄COOMe (a-series: ester derivatives), Cp^a; η⁵-C₅H₄COMe (b-series: acetyl derivatives)], which are installed as IR-tags to estimate electron densities at the metal centers in the MV species. The electrochemical and IR/near IR-spectroelectrochemical studies reveal that the two metal centers in the para-isomers p-1a,b ⁺ interact with each other more strongly than those in the meta-isomers m-1a,b ⁺ . Electron-spin resonance study also supports the radicals being delocalized over the Ru-(p-C≡C-C₆H₄-C≡C)-Ru moieties in p-1a,b ⁺ . The spectroelectrochemical IR study shows significant higher-energy shifts of the ν(C=O) vibrations brought about upon 1e-oxidation. Spectral simulation on the basis of the Bloch equations allows us to determine the electron transfer rate constants (k _et) between the two metal centers being in the orders of 10¹² s^-1 ( p-1 ⁺ ) and 10⁹ s^-1 ( m-1 ⁺ ). The shifts of the ν(C=O) bands reveal that the charge densities on the para-isomers p-1a,b ⁺ are widely delocalized over the Ru-(p-C≡C-C₆H₄-C≡C)-Ru linkages in contrast to the meta-isomers m-1a,b ⁺ , where the electron densities are mainly localized on the metal fragments, as supported by the density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory studies as well as comparison with the reference mononuclear acetylide complexes, C₆H₅-C≡C-RuCp^R(dppe) 2. We have successfully demonstrated that the carbonyl groups (>C=O) in the ancillary Cp ligands also work as IR-tags to report detailed information on the electron densities at the metal centers and the electron distribution over MV complexes as well.

Bimetallic ethynylanthracenyl functionalised carbynes

Mono- and bimetallic anthracenes functionalised by alkynyl and alkylidynyl substituents are obtained via sequential cross-coupling reactions of the 9-bromoanthracenyl carbyne [W{CC(C₆H₄)₂CBr}(CO)₂(Tp*)].

Structural and electronic forms of doubly oxido/Pz and triply oxido/(Pz)2 bridged mixed valent and isovalent diruthenium complexes (Pz = pyrazolate)

The article reported on the diastereomeric dinuclear mixed-valent complexes [(acac)₂Ru(III)(μ-O)(μ-Pz^R)Ru(IV)(acac)₂] (R = H, Me, meso: ΔΛ, 1a-1c; rac: ΔΔ/ΛΛ, 2a-2c) and rac-[(acac)₂Ru(III)(μ-O)(μ-Iz)Ru(IV)(acac)₂], (2d) (HPz = pyrazole, HIz = indazole, acac = acetylacetonate). Moreover, the diruthenium(II,II) complexes [(HPz)₃Ru(II)(μ-O)(μ-Pz)₂ Ru(II)(HPz)₃] (3a) and [(HIz)₃Ru(II)(μ-O)(μ-Iz)₂Ru(II)(HIz)₃] (3d) were presented. The analogous form of 3a, i.e., [(HPz)₂(Pz)Ru(III)(μ-O)(μ-Pz)₂Ru(III)(Pz)(HPz)₂], was previously reported. Single crystal X-ray structures of 1a-1c/2a-2d and representative 3a showed their molecular forms, including the diastereomeric nature of the former. The Ru-O-Ru angle decreased appreciably on switching from doubly bridged 1 and 2 (128-135°) to triply bridged 3a (114°). Both series of complexes displayed rhombic symmetry in their EPR spectra, with g₁ and g₂ being very similar for 1a-1c with an almost axial look. The mixed-valence complex with a Ru(III)Ru(IV) (S = 1/2) state of 1 and 2 would lead to iso-valence complexes of Ru(III)Ru(III) and Ru(IV)Ru(IV) with an EPR inactive state by one electron redox reaction. On the other hand, metal based {Ru(II)Ru(II)/Ru(II)Ru(III), 3a/3a⁺} and terminal ligand (HPz/HPz^-, 3a/3a^-) based redox processes displayed anisotropic and free radical EPR, respectively. An IVCT (intervalence charge transfer) band was found for the delocalised mixed valent 1 and 2 {Ru(III)Ru(IV)} or 3a⁺ {Ru(II)Ru(III)} in the NIR region. The intense metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transitions of 1-3 in the visible region varied systematically as a function of the metal oxidation state.

Symmetric and non-symmetric anthracen-diyl bis(alkylidynes)

Three examples of 9-bromo-10-(alkylidynyl)anthracenes, [W{CC(C₆H₄)₂CBr}(CO)₂(L)] (L = hydrotris(dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate Tp*, hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate Tp, hydrotris(2-mercapto-N-methylimidazol-1-yl)borate Tm) were prepared via modified Fischer-Mayr acyl oxide-abstraction protocols. With a sufficiently bulky ancillary ligand (L = Tp*) the aryl bromide is ammenable to cross-coupling reactions that enable more elaborate derivatives to be prepared. These including symmetric bis(alkylidynyl)anthracenes as well as non-palindromic examples bearing disparate metals and/or co-ligands. In contrast, these couplings fail for smaller ligands (L = Tp, Tm) where it was found that Pd⁰ or Pt⁰ were instead able to coordinate across two WC bonds to give trimetallic bow-tie complexes, [W₂M{μ-CC(C₆H₄)₂CBr}₂(CO)₄(L)₂] (M = Pd, Pt; L = Tp, Tm).

A review of oligo(arylene ethynylene) derivatives in molecular junctions

Oligo(arylene ethynylene) (OAE) derivatives are the "workhorse" molecules of molecular electronics. Their ease of synthesis and flexibility of functionalisation mean that a diverse array of OAE molecular wires have been designed, synthesised and studied theoretically and experimentally in molecular junctions using both single-molecule and ensemble methods. This review summarises the breadth of molecular designs that have been investigated with emphasis on structure-property relationships with respect to the electronic conductance of OAEs. The factors considered include molecular length, connectivity, conjugation, (anti)aromaticity, heteroatom effects and quantum interference (QI). Growing interest in the thermoelectric properties of OAE derivatives, which are expected to be at the forefront of research into organic thermoelectric devices, is also explored.

Influence of Fine Ligand Substitution Modification of the Isocyanidometal Bridge on Metal-to-Metal Charge Transfer Properties in Class II-III Mixed Valence Complexes

The synthesis and characterization of Class II-III mixed valence complexes have been an interesting topic due to their special intermediate behaviour between localized and delocalized mixed valence complexes. To investigate the influence of the isocyanidometal bridge on metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) properties, a family of new isocyanidometal-bridged complexes and their one-electron oxidation products cis-[Cp(dppe)Fe-CN-Ru(L)₂ -NC-Fe(dppe)Cp][PF₆ ]_n (n=2, 3) (Cp=1,3-cyclopentadiene, dppe=1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, L=2,2'-bipyridine (bpy, 1[PF₆ ]_n ), 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl (5,5'-dmbpy, 2[PF₆ ]_n ) and 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl (4,4'-dmbpy, 3[PF₆ ]_n )) have been synthesized and fully characterized. The experimental results suggest that all the one-electron oxidation products may belong to Class II-III mixed valence complexes, supported by TDDFT calculations. With the change of the substituents of the bipyridyl ligand on the Ru centre from H, 5,5'-dimethyl to 4,4'-dimethyl, the energy of MMCT for the one-electron oxidation complexes changes in the order: 1³⁺ <2³⁺ <3³⁺ , and that for the two-electron oxidation complexes decreases in the order 1⁴⁺ >3⁴⁺ >2⁴⁺ . The potential splitting (ΔE_1/2 (2)) between the two terminal Fe centres for N[PF₆ ]₂ are the largest potential splitting for the cyanido-bridged complexes reported so far. This work shows that the smaller potential difference between the bridging and the terminal metal centres would result in the more delocalized mixed valence complex.

Synthesis and electronic coupling studies of cyclometalated diruthenium complexes bridged by 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(benzimidazol-2-yl)-biphenyl

Three cyclometalated diruthenium complexes bridged by 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(benzimidazol-2-yl)biphenyl (H-tbibp) and capped with different terminal ligands have been synthesized and examined. In addition, two monoruthenium complexes with H-tbibp have been prepared for the purpose of comparison studies. The degree of Ru-Ru electronic coupling of these diruthenium complexes has been investigated by electrochemical and intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) analyses. These results suggest that when the same or similar terminal ligands are used, the strength of H-tbibp in mediating the Ru-Ru coupling is enhanced with respect to that of the previously reported bridging ligand 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(N-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)biphenyl, but it is slightly inferior to that of the classical bridging ligand 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(pyrid-2-yl)biphenyl. This trend is also supported by CNS analyses based on the hole-superexchange mechanism. In addition, DFT calculations have been performed to probe the spin density distributions of the singly-oxidized diruthenium complexes with H-tbibp and TDDFT calculations are used to reproduce the IVCT transitions.

Iron vs. ruthenium: syntheses, structures and IR spectroelectrochemical characterisation of half-sandwich Group 8 acetylide complexes

A synthetic ‘trick’ affording complexes [M(CCR)(dppe)Cp′] (M = Fe, Ru) in high purity directly from the reaction vessel is described.

Oxidized divinyl oligoacene-bridged diruthenium complexes: bridged localized radical characters and reduced aromaticity in bridge cores

A series of bimetallic ruthenium vinyl complexes 1-5 bridged by oligoacenes were synthesized and characterized in this study. Comparative cyclic voltammetry results from 1-5 indicated that the first oxidation potential decreased gradually with the extension of conjugate ligands. Upon oxidation to singly oxidized species 1+-5+, rather small ν(CO) changes in the infrared (IR) spectra and the characteristic bands of metal-to-ligand charge transfer absorptions in the near IR (NIR) region predicted via time-dependent DFT calculations suggested that strong bridged ligands participate in redox processes. NIR absorptions were not observed in complexes 4+ and 5+ possibly because of instability in their twisted and noncoplanar geometry. Electron paramagnetic resonance results and spin density distribution demonstrated that the bridged localized degrees of 1+-5+ successively increased with the extension of oligoacene from benzene to tetracene. Further comparative analysis of neutral molecules and monocations to the aromaticity and π-electron density of bridge cores indicated a step-by-step transformation process from an aromatic to quinoidal radical upon oxidation.

Role of Substituents at 3-position of Thienylethynyl Spacer on Electronic Properties in Diruthenium(II) Organometallic Wire-like Complexes

A series of organometallic complexes [Cl(dppe)₂ Ru-C≡C-(3-R-C₄ H₂ S)-C≡C-Ru(dppe)₂ Cl] (3-R-C₄ H₂ S=3-substituted thienyl moiety; R=-H, -C₂ H₅ , -C₃ H₇ , -C₄ H₉ , -C₆ H₁₃ , -OMe, -CN in 5 a-5 g respectively) have been synthesized by systematic variation of 3-substituents at the thienylethynyl bridging unit. The diruthenum(II) wire-like complexes (5 a-5 g) have been achieved by the reaction of thienylethynyl bridging units, HC≡C-(3-R-C₄ H₂ S)-C≡CH (4 a-4 g) with cis-[Ru(dppe)₂ Cl₂ ]. The wire-like diruthenium(II) complexes undergo two consecutive electrochemical oxidation processes in the potential range of 0.0 - 0.8 V. Interestingly, the wave separation between the two redox waves is greatly influenced by the substituents at the 3-position of the thienylethynyl. Thus, the substitution on 3-position of the thienylethynyl bridging unit plays a pivotal role for tuning the electronic properties. To understand the electronic behavior, density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the selected diruthenium wire-like complexes (5 a-5 e) with different alkyl appendages are performed. The theoretical data demonstrate that incorporation of alkyl groups to the thienylethynyl entity leaves unsymmetrical spin densities, thus affecting the electronic properties. The voltammetric features of the other two Ru(II) alkynyl complexes 5 f and 5 g (with -OMe and -CN group respectively) show an apparent dependence on the electronic properties. The electronic properties in the redox conjugate, (5 a⁺ ) with K_c of 3.9×10⁶ are further examined by UV-Vis-NIR and FTIR studies, showing optical responses in NIR region along with changes in "-Ru-C≡C-" vibrational stretching frequency. The origin of the observed electronic transition has been assigned based on time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations.

Rutheniumethynyl-Triarylamine Organic-Inorganic Mixed-Valence Systems: Regulating Ru-N Electronic Coupling by Different Aryl Bridge Cores

Four rutheniumethynyl-triarylamine complexes 1-4 with different aryl bridge cores were prepared. The solid structures of complexes 2-4 were fully confirmed by X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. Two consecutive one-electron oxidation processes of complexes 1-4 were attributed to the ruthenium and nitrogen centers, as revealed by cyclic voltammetry and square-wave voltammogram. Results also showed decreasing potential difference ΔE of complexes 1, 3, and 4, with the largest value for 2. Upon chemical oxidation of complexes 1-4 by 1.0 eq oxidation reagents FcPF₆ or AgSbF₆ , the mixed-valence complexes, except for 2⁺ , show characteristic broad NIR absorptions in the UV-vis-NIR spectroscopic experiments. NIR multiple absorptions were assigned to NAr₂ →RuCp*(dppe) intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) and metal-to-ligand charge transfer transitions by TDDFT calculations. Coupling parameter (H_ab ) from Hush theory revealed that increasing electronic communication in 1⁺ , 3⁺ , and 4⁺ . Electron density distribution of the HOMO for neutral molecules (1, 3, and 4) and spin density distribution of the corresponding single-oxidized states (1⁺ , 3⁺ , and 4⁺ ) increases progressively on the bridge as the size of the aromatic system increases, proving incremental contributions from bridge cores during oxidation.

Mix and (Mis)match: further studies of the electronic structure and mixed-valence characteristics of 1,4-diethynylbenzene-bridged bimetallic complexes

The 1,4-diethynylbenzene motif is commonly employed as a bridging ligand in bimetallic molecular systems intended to show pronounced intramolecular electronic interactions, delocalized electronic structures and 'wire-like' properties between the metal fragments at the ligand termini. In contrast to these expectations, the donor-acceptor compounds [{Cp'(CO)xM'}(μ-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC6H4C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C){M(PP)Cp'}]n+ [n = 0, 1; M'(CO)xCp' = Fe(CO)2Cp, W(CO)3Cp*; M(PP)Cp' = Fe(dppe)Cp, Fe(dppe)Cp*, Ru(PPh3)2Cp, Ru(dppe)Cp, Ru(dppe)Cp*] display remarkably little bridge-mediated electronic interaction between the electron-rich {M(PP)Cp'} and electron-poor {M'(CO)xCp'} fragments in the ground state. However, a relatively high-energy (26 000-30 000 cm-1) M-to-M' charge transfer can be identified. One-electron oxidation is largely localized on the {M(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)(PP)Cp'} fragment and gives rise to a new charge transfer band with bridging-ligand-to-{M(PP)Cp'}+ (M'(CO)xCp' = Fe(CO)2Cp) or M'-to-M(+) (M(CO)xCp' = W(CO)3Cp*) character. The localized electronic ground state of these complexes is better revealed through analysis of the IR spectra, taking advantage of the well-resolved ν(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C) and ν(CO) bands and IR spectroelectrochemical methods, than through the more classical analysis based on the concepts of Marcus-Hush theory and analysis of the putative IVCT electronic transition. The conclusions are supported by DFT calculations using the BLYP35 functional.

Dinuclear acetylide-bridged ruthenium(ii) complexes with rigid non-aromatic spacers

Rigid dinuclear ruthenium complexes containing non-aromatic caged and polycyclic spacer groups were synthesised and characterised. The complexes, [trans,trans-{Ru(dmpe)2(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CtBu)}2(μ-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-X-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C)], where X = 1,4-bicyclo[2.2.2]octane (C8H12) or 1,12-p-carborane (p-C2B10H10), were formed via the metathesis of terminal organic bisacetylenes with the methylruthenium complex, [trans-Ru(dmpe)2(CH3)(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CtBu)], under mild conditions. Electrochemical studies demonstrated electronic interactions across the non-aromatic caged and polycyclic spacers was less than in the analogous complex with an aromatic spacer group, [trans,trans-{Ru(dmpe)2(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CtBu)}2(μ-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-p-C6H4-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C)]. Mononuclear complexes, [trans-Ru(dmpe)2(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CtBu)(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-X-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH)], were also synthesised. [trans-Ru(dmpe)2(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CtBu)(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-C8H12-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH)] and [trans,trans-{Ru(dmpe)2(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CtBu)}2(μ-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-p-C2B10H10-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C)] were structurally characterised by X-ray crystallography.

Dinuclear ruthenium acetylide complexes with diethynylated anthrahydroquinone and anthraquinone frameworks: a multi-stimuli-responsive organometallic switch

The anthrahydroquinone (AHQ)/anthraquinone (AQ) system is of particular interest as a molecular switching system for molecule-based devices because AHQ and AQ can be interconverted by redox stimuli and their π-conjugated systems are distinct from each other. To date, however, a way to modify and/or functionalize the switching behavior based on the AHQ/AQ system is still limited. In the present contribution, the synthesis and properties of multi-responsive dinuclear molecular switches having Ru(dppe)₂ fragments bridged by the diethynylated diacetoxyanthracene (AcAHQ) and AQ units (μ-AcAHQ/AQ){C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Ru(R)(dppe)₂}₂ (R = Cl, C₄TMS) are presented. The terminal Ru(dppe)₂ fragments are redox-active and, therefore, the intermetallic interaction can be estimated by electrochemical as well as IVCT band analysis. As a result, the organometallic AcAHQ/AQ-Ru system turns out to be an effective bimodal molecular switch, which is triggered not only by redox stimuli but also by pH stimuli.

A Spectroscopic and Computationally Minimal Approach to the Analysis of Charge-Transfer Processes in Conformationally Fluxional Mixed-Valence and Heterobimetallic Complexes

Class II mixed-valence bimetallic complexes {[Cp'(PP)M]C≡C-C≡N[M'(PP)'Cp']}²⁺ (M, M'=Ru, Fe; PP=dppe, (PPh₃ )₂ ; Cp'=Cp*, Cp) exist as conformational ensembles in fluid solution, with a population of structures ranging from cis- to trans-like geometries. Each conformer gives rise to its own series of low-energy intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) and local d-d transitions, which overlap in the NIR region, giving complex band envelopes in the NIR absorption spectrum, which prevent any meaningful attempt at analysis of the band shape. However, DFT and time-dependent (TD)DFT calculations with dispersion-corrected global-hybrid (BLYP35-D3) or local hybrid (lh-SsirPW92-D3) functionals on a small number of optimised structures chosen to sample the ground state potential energy hypersurfaces of each of these complexes has proven sufficient to explain the major features of the electronic spectra. Although modest in terms of computational expense, this approach provides a more accurate description of the underlying molecular electronic structure than would be possible through analysis of the IVCT band by using the static point-charge model of Marcus-Hush theory and derivatives, or TDDFT calculations from a single (global) minimum energy geometry.

Improving Vibrational Mode Interpretation Using Bayesian Regression

To streamline the interpretation of vibrational spectra, this work introduces the use of Bayesian linear regression with automatic relevance determination as a viable approach to decompose the atomic motions along any vibrational mode as a weighted combination of displacements along chemically meaningful internal coordinates. This novel approach denominated vibrational mode automatic relevance determination (VMARD) is presented and compared with the well-established potential energy decomposition (PED) scheme. Good agreement is generally attained between the two methods. VMARD returns a decomposition of the atomic displacement using only a small number of internal coordinates, thus aiding the interpretation of the vibrational spectra. Moreover, the results show that the VMARD descriptions are resilient toward the addition of additional internal coordinates, achieving a concise description of the vibrational modes despite the use of redundant internal coordinates. Potential applications of VMARD involving the gathering of physical insights on the atomic motions along the reaction coordinate at transition state structures, as well as the improvement of theoretically predicted vibrational frequencies, are also presented under a proof-of-concept perspective.

Fluorenylporphyrins functionalized by electrochromic ruthenium units as redox-triggered fluorescence switches

The electrofluorochromic behaviour of two ruthenium-appended porphyrin dyads has been investigated. Differences in response according to the nature of the interposed aryl linker are rationalised with the aid of electrochemistry and TD-DFT calculations.

Versatile Coordination of Azocarboxamides: Redox-Triggered Change of the Chelating Binding Pocket in Ruthenium Complexes

Azocarboxamides occupy a special place among azo ligands owing to their versatility for metal coordination. Herein ruthenium complexes with two different azocarboxamide ligands that differ in the presence (or not) of a coordinating pyridyl heterocycle are presented. By making full use of the O,N(amide), N(azo), and N(pyridyl) coordinating sites, the first diruthenium complex that is bridged by an azo ligand containing two different binding pockets was obtained. Moreover, it was conclusively proven that, in the mononuclear complexes, oxidation at the ruthenium center leads to a complete change of coordination at the chelating binding pocket. The complexes were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Additionally, the mechanism of the aforementioned redox-triggered change in the chelating binding pocket and the electronic structures of all the complexes were investigated by a combination of electrochemistry, UV/Vis/NIR/EPR spectroelectrochemistry, and DFT calculations. This is first instance in which a redox-driven change in the complete chelating binding pocket has been observed in a ruthenium complex as well as with azo-based ligands. These results thus show the potential of these versatile azocarboxamide ligands to act as redox-driven switches with possible relevance to electrocatalysis.

Synthesis, structure, and photophysical and electrochemical properties of Ru(ii) complexes of arylene-vinylene terpyridyl conjugates

A series of arylene-vinylene π-conjugated terpyridyl ruthenium(ii) complexes, [Ru(PPh3)2Cl(tpy-C6H4-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-Ar)][PF6] (1-4; tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridyl, where Ar = phenyl, tolyl, 1-naphthyl and 9-anthracenyl as substituents at the 4' position of tpy), have been synthesized and characterized by multinuclear NMR, IR, HRMS and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The influence of the electronic nature of arylene groups on their photophysical and electrochemical properties has been investigated to understand the electronic interaction between the metal-organic redox centers. Furthermore, a σ-donor phenylacetylide group has been incorporated to accomplish [Ph-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Ru(PPh3)2(tpy-C6H4-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-Ar)][PF6] (5-8) complexes by the substitution of a coordinated chloride ligand and to investigate the change in their redox and photophysical properties. DFT studies have been performed to gain an insight into their electronic properties by determining the HOMO-LUMO energy levels and frontier molecular orbitals of all the synthesized Ru(ii) complexes.

Quadratic and cubic hyperpolarizabilities of nitro-phenyl/-naphthalenyl/-anthracenyl alkynyl complexes

1-Nitronaphthalenyl-4-alkynyl and 9-nitroanthracenyl-10-alkynyl complexes [M](C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-4-C10H6-1-NO2) ([M] = trans-[RuCl(dppe)2] (6b), trans-[RuCl(dppm)2] (7b), Ru(PPh3)2(η5-C5H5) (8b), Ni(PPh3)(η5-C5H5) (9b), Au(PPh3) (10b)) and [M](C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-10-C14H8-9-NO2) ([M] = trans-[RuCl(dppe)2] (6c), trans-[RuCl(dppm)2] (7c), Ru(PPh3)2(η5-C5H5) (8c), Ni(PPh3)(η5-C5H5) (9c), Au(PPh3) (10c)) were synthesized and their identities were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Electrochemical studies and a comparison to the 1-nitrophenyl-4-alkynyl analogues [M](C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-4-C6H4-1-NO2) ([M] = trans-[RuCl(dppe)2] (6a), trans-[RuCl(dppm)2] (7a), Ru(PPh3)2(η5-C5H5) (8a), Ni(PPh3)(η5-C5H5) (9a), Au(PPh3) (10a)) reveal a decrease in oxidation potential for ruthenium and nickel complexes on proceeding from the phenyl- to naphthalenyl- and then anthracenyl-containing bridge. HOMO → LUMO transitions characteristic of MC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-1-C6H4 to 4-C6H4-1-NO2 charge transfer red-shift and gain in intensity on proceeding to the ruthenium complexes; the low-energy transitions have increasing ILCT character on proceeding from the phenyl- to naphthalenyl- and then anthracenyl-containing bridge. Spectroelectrochemical studies of the Ru-containing complexes reveal the appearance of low-energy bands corresponding to chloro-to-RuIII charge transfer that red-shift on proceeding from the phenyl- to naphthalenyl- and then anthracenyl-containing bridge. Second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) studies at 1064 nm employing ns pulses and the hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique reveal an increase in quadratic optical nonlinearity upon introduction of metal to the precursor alkyne to afford alkynyl complexes and on proceeding from ligated-gold to -nickel and then to -ruthenium for a fixed alkynyl ligand. Quadratic NLO data of the gold complexes optically transparent at the second-harmonic wavelength reveal an increase in βHRS on proceeding from the phenyl- to the naphthalenyl-containing complex. Broad spectral range third-order nonlinear optical studies employing fs pulses and the Z-scan technique reveal an increase in two-photon absorption cross-section on replacing ligated-gold by -nickel and then -ruthenium for a fixed alkynyl ligand. Computational studies undertaken using time-dependent density functional theory have been employed to assign the nature of the key optical transitions and suggest that the significant optical nonlinearities observed for the ruthenium-containing complexes correlate with the low-energy formally Ru → NO2 band which possesses strong MLCT character, while the more moderate nonlinearities of the gold complexes correlate with a band higher in energy that is primarily ILCT in character.

Through-conjugation of two phosphaalkyne (‘CP’) moieties mediated by a bimetallic scaffold

The bis-cyaphide complex [{Ru(dppe)₂}₂{μ-(CC)₂C₆H₄-p}(CP)₂] is the first molecule to incorporate two phosphaalkyne ‘CP’ moieties within a through-conjugated scaffold, and demonstrates interesting redox behaviour.

Mixed valency in ligand-bridged diruthenium frameworks: divergences and perspectives
