Turn-on fluorescence in tetraphenylethylene-based metal-organic frameworks: an alternative to aggregation-induced emission

Redox interference-free bimodal paraoxon sensing enabled by an aggregation-induced emission nanozyme catalytically hydrolyzing phosphoesters specifically

In view of the current serious situation of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) residue contamination, developing rapid and accurate OPs sensors is a matter of urgency. Redox-nanozyme based colorimetric sensors have been widely researched and utilized in OPs residue determination, but overcoming the interference of external redox substances and the effect of single-signal modes on detection performance is still a challenge. Here we fabricated a Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF) featuring specific phosphatase-like activity and strong aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorescence for redox interference-free bimodal pesticide sensing. In the MOF, the activity-tunable Zr4+ node offered high hydrolytic activity and affinity toward P-O containing substrates, and the rigid framework structure effectively enhanced the fluorescence emission of the ligand 1,1,2,2-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)ethylene. The developed AIEzyme could efficiently catalyze the hydrolysis of paraoxon to yellow p-nitrophenol, which further reduced the intrinsic AIE fluorescence of AIEzyme through internal filtration effect. Thereby, a natural enzyme-free dual-mode colorimetric/fluorescence approach was established for paraoxon detection with no interference from redox substances, and a smartphone-assisted portable platform was further developed to enable the facile, rapid, and high-performance sensing of the pesticide in complex practical matrices.

Insights into Spectral Distortion and Nonlinearity in UV-Vis and Fluorescence Spectroscopy of Molecular Fluorophore Solutions: Effects of Cascading Optical Processes (Part IV)

Reproducibility and linearity are crucial benchmarks for any measurement technology. However, UV-vis and fluorescence spectral distortion and nonlinearity are prevalent, even in seemingly simple fluorescent solutions that comprise only one dissolved molecular fluorophore, without exogenous absorbing or scattering species. In this report, we introduce an analytical model for the quantification of fluorescence interference on UV-vis measurements and a conceptual model for mechanistically understanding the impacts of higher-order cascading optical processes on fluorescence measurements. The experimental UV-vis transmittance can be dominated by interfering fluorescence, even for fluorophore solutions with theoretical absorbance values far below the instrument's linear dynamic range (LDR). Absorption-inner-filter-effect (aIFE) correction drastically improves the fluorescence LDR. However, the efficacy of aIFE correction hinges on two competing factors that strongly depend on the fluorophore's optical properties: the degree of fluorescence interference in UV-vis and the significance of secondary or higher-order emission triggered by fluorophore absorption of emitted photons. Our research sheds light on the remarkable complexity of cascading optical processes that can occur even in the simplest fluorescent solutions. It emphasizes the necessity of critically evaluating optical spectroscopic measurements of fluorescent solutions to improve the reliability of analyzing and interpreting optical spectra. Moreover, it lays the groundwork for future development of methods capable of handling challenging samples that exceed the capabilities of the current tools.

Stable and efficient rare-earth free phosphors based on an Mg(II) metal-organic framework for hybrid light-emitting diodes

Stable and efficient green hybrid light-emitting diodes (HLEDs) were fabricated from a highly emissive Mg(II)-tetraphenyl ethylene derivative metal-organic framework embedded in a polystyrene matrix (Mg-TBC MOF@PS). The photoluminescence quantum yield (ϕ) of the material, >80%, remains constant upon polymer embedment. The resulting HLEDs featured high luminous efficiencies of >50 lm W-1 and long lifetimes of >380 h, making them among the most stable MOF-based HLEDs. The significance of this work relies on the combination of many features, such as the abundance of the metal ion, the straightforward scalability of the synthetic protocol, the great ϕ reached upon phosphor fabrication, and the state-of-the-art HLED performances.

Aggregation Enhanced Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence through Spin-Orbit Coupling Regulation

Integrating aggregation-induced emission (AIE) into thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters holds great promise for the advancement of highly efficient organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Despite recent advancements, a thorough comprehension of the underlying mechanisms remains imperative for the practical application of such materials. In this work, we introduce a novel approach aimed at modulating the TADF process by manipulating dynamic processes in excited states through aggregation effect. Our findings reveal that aggregation not only enhances both prompt and delayed fluorescence simultaneously but also imposes constraints on molecular reorientation. This constraint reinforces spin-orbit coupling and reduces the energy gap between singlets and triplets. These insights deepen our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms governing the aggregation effect on TADF materials and provide valuable guidance for the design of high-efficiency photoluminescent materials.

Uncovering the Aggregation-Induced Emission Mechanisms of Phenoxazine and Phenothiazine Groups

Molecules with both aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties are potential organic light-emitting diode materials; however, the AIE and TADF mechanisms are still debatable. In this work, four molecules incorporating carbazole (Cz), phenoxazine (PXZ), and phenothiazine (PTZ) as donor groups to the diphenylsulfone acceptor were investigated. The experiment results indicate that a molecule containing Cz exhibits solely TADF properties, whereas molecules containing PXZ and PTZ demonstrate both TADF and AIE characteristics. As for DPS-PTZ, the result indicates that the thin-film environment restricts molecular twisting, consequently reducing nonradiative decay, thereby attributing to the AIE property by density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulation. As for DPS-PXZ, the result suggests that the restricted access to a conical intersection in a singlet excited via an expansion in the C-S-C angle is the pivotal factor for the AIE characteristic. The C-S-C angle twist of DPS-PXZ is impeded in the aggregate state and resulted in luminescence. Understanding the mechanisms serves as a valuable guide for the development of new AIE systems, enabling their application in various practical domains.

Phosphine-Catalyzed 1,2-cis-Diboration of 1,3-Butadiynes

Trialkyl phosphines PMe3 and PEt3 catalyze the 1,2-cis-diboration of 1,3-butadiynes to give 1,2-diboryl enynes. The products were utilized to synthesize 1,1,2,4-tetraaryl enynes using a Suzuki-Miyaura protocol and can readily undergo proto-deborylation.

Tetrakispyrazolylethene: Protonation-Induced Emission

Tetrakispyrazolylethene (1) was synthesized from pyrazole and hexachloroethane through a one-step substitution reaction. The increase of emission was detected both in solid and aqueous THF solution, compared with that in anhydrous THF. While the former originates from the crystal packing, the latter is attributed to the protonation-induced emission, independent of aggregation, based on the optical measurement under varying concentrations and particle-size distribution analysis.

Probing ligand conformation and net dimensionality in a series of tetraphenylethene-based metal-organic frameworks

Tetraphenylethene-based ligands with lowered symmetry are promising building blocks for the construction of novel luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). However, few examples have been reported, and predicting the ligand conformation and the dimensionality of the resulting MOF remains challenging. In order to uncover how synthetic conditions and accessible ligand conformations may affect the resulting MOF structure, four new MOF structures were synthesized under solvothermal conditions using the meta-coordinated tetraphenylethene-based ligand m-ETTC and paddlewheel SBUs composed of Co(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II). WSU-10 (WSU = Washington State University) is formed with either Zn or Cu comprising stacked psuedo-2D layers. The dimensionality of WSU-10 can be intentionally increased through the addition of pyrazine as a pillar ligand into the synthesis, forming the 3D structure WSU-11. The third structure, WSU-20, is formed by the combination of Zn or Co with m-ETTC and is intrinsically 3D without the use of a pillar ligand; interestingly, this is the result of a distortion in the paddlewheel SBU. Finally, Cu was also found to form a new structure (WSU-12), which displays an m-ETTC conformation unique from that found in the other isolated MOFs. Structural features are compared across the series and a mechanistic relationship between WSU-10 and -20 is proposed, providing insight into the factors that can encourage the generation of frameworks with increased dimensionality.

Europium Metal-Organic Framework with a Tetraphenylethylene-Based Ligand: A Dual-Mechanism Quenching Immunosensor for Enhanced Electrochemiluminescence via the Coordination Trigger

The effective applications of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) across various fields necessitate ongoing research into novel luminophores and ECL strategies. In this study, self-luminous flower-like nanocomposites (Eu-tcbpe-MOF) were prepared by coordination self-assembly using the aggregation-induced emission material 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)ethylene (H4TCBPE) and Eu(III) ions as the precursors. Compared with the monomers and aggregates of H4TCBPE, Eu-tcbpe-MOF exhibits stronger ECL emission. Such enhanced electrochemiluminescence is due to coordination as the coordination-triggered electrochemiluminescence (CT-ECL) enhancement effect. In this study, a cubic-structured nanocomposite (Co9S8@Au@MoS2) was used as an efficient quencher, and a more sensitive ECL detection platform was achieved by two quenching mechanisms: resonance energy transfer and competitive consumption of coreactants. N,N-Diethylethanolamine (DBAE) was used as a coreactant, and DBAE has a faster electron transfer rate and stronger energy supply efficiency than the traditional anodoluminescent coreactant tripropylamine, which effectively improves the ECL signal intensity of Eu-tcbpe-MOF. Hence, a sandwich-type ECL immunosensor was prepared by employing a dual-quenching mechanism, utilizing Eu-tcbpe-MOF as the detection probe and Co9S8@Au@MoS2 as the quencher, achieving precise detection of carcinoembryonic antigen from 0.1 pg·mL-1 to 100 ng·mL-1 with a detection limit of 35.1 fg·mL-1.

Enhancing Fluorescence in Both Solution and Solid States Induced by Imine Cage Formation

Developing luminescent materials that exhibit strong emissions in both solution and solid phases is highly desirable and challenging. Herein, we report imine-bond directed formation of a rigid organic cage (TPE-cage) that was synthesized by [2+4] imine condensation of a TPE-cored tetra-aldehyde (TPE-TA) with a clip-like diamine (XA) to illustrate confinement-induced fluorescence enhancement. Compared to the non-emissive TPE-TA (ϕF =0.26 %) in the dichloromethane (DCM) solution, the TPE-cage achieved a remarkable (~520-fold) emission enhancement (ϕF =70.38 %). In contrast, a monomeric tetra-imine model compound (TPE-model) showed only a minor enhancement (ϕF =0.56 %) in emission compared to the parent tetra-aldehyde TPE-TA. The emission of TPE-cage was further enhanced by ~1.5-fold (ϕF =80.96 %) in the aggregated state owing to aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE). This approach establishes the potential for synthesizing luminescent materials with high emission in both solution and solid-state by employing a single-step imine condensation reaction.

Highly Emissive and Robust Cd-Based MOF with an Unprecedented Topology for Tetracycline Sensing

Herein, an unprecedented cadmium-based metal-organic framework (JNU-106) fabricated by utilizing pyrazole-functionalized tetraphenylethylene ligands (Py-TPE) and rod-shaped secondary building units is reported, possessing a new (3,3,3,6,6,8)-connected topological network. Thanks to the ingeniously designed intramolecular charge transfer behavior, which originates from the congruent coplanarity between Py and TPE, JNU-106 exhibits intense green luminescence with a quantum yield increased by 1.5 times. The phenomenon of remarkable fluorescence quenching of JNU-106 reveals that it possesses extremely high anti-interference performance, superior sensitivity, and dedicated selectivity toward tetracycline antibiotics (TCAs) in aqueous solutions, which are comparable to those of the state-of-the-art porous sensing compounds. Taking the theoretical calculations and experimental results into account, the luminescence quenching is mainly attributed to the internal filtration effect and the static quenching effect. Considering the portable and rapid performance of JNU-106-based testing strips for sensing TCAs, the fabricated JNU-106 provides an alternative for ecological monitoring and environmental governance.

White light emission from helically stacked humin-mimic based H-aggregates in heteroatom free carbon dots

White light emission (WLE), particularly from heteroatom free carbon dots (CDs), is unusual. Besides, deciphering the origin of WLE from a H-aggregated molecular fluorophore in such kinds of CDs is a challenging task due to their non-fluorescent character resulting from a forbidden transition from a lower-energy excitonic state. Therefore, rigorous investigation on their elusive excited state photophysical properties along with their steady-state optical phenomena has to be carried out to shed light on the nature of distinct emissive states formed in the CDs. Herein, for the first time, we report WLE from imperfect H-aggregates of co-facially π-π stacked humin-like structures comprising furfural monomer units as a unique molecular fluorophore in CDs, as revealed from combined spectroscopic and microscopic studies, synthesized through hydrothermal treatment of the single precursor, dextrose. H-aggregates in CDs show a broad range of excitation-dependent emission spectra with color coordinates close to pure white light, i.e., CIE (0.35, 0.37) and a color temperature of 6000 K. Imperfect orientation between the transition dipole moments of adjacent monomer units in the H-aggregate's molecular arrangement is expected to cause ground state symmetry breaking, as confirmed by Circular Dichroism (CD) studies, which established helically stacked nature in molecular aggregates and produced significant oscillatory strength at lower energy excitonic states to enable fluorescence. TRES and TAS investigations have been performed to minimise the intricacies associated with excited state photophysics, which is regarded as an essential step in gaining a grasp on emissive states. Based on the observation of two isoemissive spots in the time-resolved area normalized emission spectra (TRANES), the existence of three oligomeric species in the excited state equilibrium of the pure/hybrid H-aggregates has been established. The exciton dynamics through electron relaxation from the higher to the lower excitonic states, charge transfer (CT) states, and surface trap mediated emission in excimer states of H-aggregates have also been endorsed as three distinct emissive states from femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) studies corroborating with their steady-state absorption and emission behavior. The results would demonstrate the usage of CDs as a cutting-edge fluorescent material for creating aggregate-induced white light emission.

Anisotropic flexibility and rigidification in a TPE-based Zr-MOFs with scu topology

Tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based ligands are appealing for constructing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with new functions and responsiveness. Here, we report a non-interpenetrated TPE-based scu Zr-MOF with anisotropic flexibility, that is, Zr-TCPE (H4TCPE = 1,1,2,2-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)ethylene), remaining two anisotropic pockets. The framework flexibility is further anisotropically rigidified by installing linkers individually at specific pockets. By individually installing dicarboxylic acid L1 or L2 at pocket A or B, the framework flexibility along the b-axis or c-axis is rigidified, and the intermolecular or intramolecular motions of organic ligands are restricted, respectively. Synergistically, with dual linker installation, the flexibility is completely rigidified with the restriction of ligand motion, resulting in MOFs with enhanced stability and improved separation ability. Furthermore, in situ observation of the flipping of the phenyl ring and its rigidification process is made by 2H solid-state NMR. The anisotropic rigidification of flexibility in scu Zr-MOFs guides the directional control of ligand motion for designing stimuli-responsive emitting or efficient separation materials.

Investigating the function and design of molecular materials through terahertz vibrational spectroscopy

Terahertz spectroscopy has proved to be an essential tool for the study of condensed phase materials. Terahertz spectroscopy probes the low-frequency vibrational dynamics of atoms and molecules, usually in the condensed phase. These nuclear dynamics, which typically involve displacements of entire molecules, have been linked to bulk phenomena ranging from phase transformations to semiconducting efficiency. The terahertz region of the electromagnetic spectrum has historically been referred to as the 'terahertz gap', but this is a misnomer, as there exist a multitude of methods for accessing terahertz frequencies, and now there are cost-effective instruments that have made terahertz studies much more user-friendly. This Review highlights some of the most exciting applications of terahertz vibrational spectroscopy so far, and provides an in-depth overview of the methods of this technique and its utility to the study of the chemical sciences.

Fluorescence Sensing of pH and p-Nitrophenol Using an AIEE Active Pyridoxal Derived Schiff Base

An easy-to-prepare aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) active Schiff base NPY was synthesized by condensing vitamin B6 cofactor pyridoxal with 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic hydrazide, and employed for the fluorescent sensing of pH and p-nitrophenol (p-NP). The AIEE phenomenon of NPY was investigated in mixed DMSO/H2O medium. The weakly yellow-fluorescent NPY (λem = 535 nm) in pure DMSO turned to a bright cyan-fluorescent NPY (λem = 490 nm) upon addition of poor solvent water. The DLS and SEM analyses supported the self-aggregation of NPY that restricted the intramolecular rotation and activated the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. The AIEE luminogen (AIEEgen) NPY containing 90% of water fraction (fwater) was employed for the fluorescent sensing of pH. AIEEgen NPY displays three distinct fluorescent pH windows: non-fluorescent below pH 3.0 and above pH 10.0, cyan fluorescent between pH 3.0 to 8.0, and yellow fluorescent between pH 8.0 to 10.0. AIEEgen NPY was also applied for the detection of nitroaromatics in HEPES buffer (10% DMSO, 10 mM, pH 7.0). The addition of p-NP selectively quenched the fluorescent intensity of AIEEgen NPY with an estimated detection limit of 1.73 µM. The analytical utility of AIEEgen NPY was examined by quantifying p-NP in different real water samples.

Intramolecular Enhancement of a Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Coordination-Induced Electrochemiluminescence Bleomycin Analysis

It is significantly vital to develop a convenient assay method in clinical treatment due to an atypically low abundance (∼5 μM) of bleomycin (BLM) used in clinics. Herein, an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor using a zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) as an intramolecular coordination-induced electrochemiluminescence (CIECL) emitter was proposed for sensitive detection of BLM. Zr-MOFs were synthesized using Zr(IV) as metal ions and 4,4',4″-nitrilotribenzoic acid (H₃NTB) as ligands for the first time. The H₃NTB ligand not only acts as coordination units bonding with Zr(IV) but functions as a coreactant to enhance ECL efficiency rooted in its tertiary nitrogen atoms. Specifically, a long guanine-rich (G-rich) single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) was released by the target-BLM-controlled DNA machine that could perform π-π stacking with another G-quadruplex, ssDNA-rhodamine B (S-RB), by shearing DNA's fixed sites 5'-GC-3' and the auxiliary role of exonuclease III (Exo III). Finally, due to the quenching effect of rhodamine B, a negative correlation trend was obtained between ECL intensity and BLM concentration in the range from 5.0 nM to 50 μM and the limit of detection was 0.50 nM. We believe that it is a promising approach to guide the preparation of CIECL-based functional materials and establishment of analytical methods.

[2,2] Paracyclophanes-based double helicates for constructing artificial light-harvesting systems and white LED device

The construction of efficient artificial light-harvesting systems (ALHSs) is of vital importance in utilizing solar energy. Herein, we report the non-covalent syntheses of double helicates PCP-TPy1/2 and Rp,Rp-PCP-TPy1/2 by metal-coordination interaction and their applications in ALHSs and white light-emitting diode (LED) device. All double helicates exhibit significant aggregation-induced emission in tetrahydrofuran/water (1:9, v/v) solvent. The aggregated double helicates can be used to construct one-step or sequential ALHSs with fluorescent dyes Eosin Y (EsY) and Nile red (NiR) with the energy transfer efficiency up to 89.3%. Impressively, the PMMA film of PCP-TPy1 shows white-light emission when doped 0.075% NiR, the solid of double helicates (Rp,Rp-) PCP-TPy2 can be used as the additive of a blue LED bulb to achieve white-light emission. In this work, we provided a general method for the preparation of novel double helicates and explored their applications in ALHSs and fluorescent materials, which will promote future construction and application of helicates as emissive devices.

Brightening Blue Photoluminescence in Nonemission MOF-2 by Pressure Treatment Engineering

As equally essential as the synthesis of new materials, maneuvering new structure configurations can endow the brand-new functional properties to existing materials, which is also one of the core goals in the synthesis community. In this respect, pressure-induced emission (PIE) that triggers photoluminescence (PL) in nonemission materials is an emerging stimuli-responsive smart materials technology. In the PIE paradigms, harvesting bright PL at ambient conditions, however, has remained elusive. Herein, a remarkable PIE phenomenon is reported in initially nonemission Zn(BDC)(DMF)(H₂ O) (MOF-2), which shows bright blue-emission at 455 nm under pressure. Intriguingly, the bright blue PL with an excellent photoluminescence quantum yield up to 70.4% is unprecedentedly retained to ambient conditions upon decompression from 16.2 GPa. The detailed structural analyses combined with density functional theory calculations reveal that hydrogen bonding cooperativity effect elevates powerfully the rotational barrier of the linker rotor to 3.87 eV mol^-1 from initial 0.91 eV mol^-1 through pressure treatment. The downgrade rotational freedom turns on PL of MOF-2 after releasing pressure completely. This is the first case of harvesting PIE to ambient conditions. These findings offer a new platform for the creation of promising alternatives to high-performance PL materials based on initially nonemission counterparts.

A well-fabricated Ru@C material derived from Ru/Zn-MOF with high activity and stability in the hydrogenation of 4-chloronitrobenzene

4-Chloroaniline (4-CAN) plays an important role in chemical and industrial production. However, it remains a challenge to avoid the hydrogenation of the C-Cl bond in the synthesis process to improve selectivity under high activity conditions. In this study, we in situ fabricated ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru NPs) containing vacancies inserted into porous carbon (Ru@C-2) as a highly efficient catalyst for the catalytic hydrogenation of 4-chloronitrobenzene (4-CNB) with remarkable conversion (99.9%), selectivity (99.9%), and stability. Experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that the appropriate Ru vacancies affect the charge distribution of the Ru@C-2 catalyst, promote the electron transfer between the Ru metal and support, and increase the active sites of the Ru metal, thus facilitating the adsorption of 4-CNB and the desorption of 4-CAN to improve the activity and stability of the catalyst. This study can provide some enlightenment for the development of new 4-CNB hydrogenation catalysts.

Advances in the Synthesis of Covalent Triazine Frameworks

Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) are a class of organic polymer materials constructed by aromatic 1,3,5-triazine rings with planar π-conjugation properties. CTFs are highly stable and porous with N atoms in the frameworks, possessing semiconductive properties; thus they are widely used in gas adsorption and separation as well as catalysis. The properties of CTFs strongly depend on the type of monomers and the synthesis process. Synthesis methods including ionothermal polymerization, amino-aldehyde synthesis, trifluoromethanesulfonic acid catalyzed synthesis, and aldehyde-amidine condensation have been intensively studied in recent years. In this review, we discuss the recent advances and future developments of CTFs synthesis.

Hg(II) immobilization and detection using gel formation with tetra-(4-pyridylphenyl)ethylene and an aggregation-induced luminescence effect

Tetra-(4-pyridylphenyl)ethylene (TPPE), featuring an aggregation-induced luminescence effect (AIE), has been synthesized and used for selective detection of Hg²⁺ in DMF/H₂O (3:7, v/v) binary solutions. There was a color change from colorless to yellow in the detection of the Hg²⁺ ions, in addition to an increased fluorescence emission. This shows that TPPE will function as an excellent "turn-on" fluorescence probe in the detection Hg²⁺. Moreover, the interference of Al³⁺, Ba²⁺, Mn²⁺, Ca²⁺, Fe³⁺, Cu²⁺, Ag⁺, Cd²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Mg²⁺, Pb²⁺, Zn²⁺, and Cr³⁺ ions was found to be negligible under optimized solvent conditions. Cysteine and EDTA were also found to form TPPE-based fluorescent switches with the Hg²⁺ ions. The practical use of the TPPE sensor was also demonstrated by using a specific test kit. Characterization using FT-IR, NMR titration, UV titration, EDS, and HR-MS techniques showed that Hg²⁺ will form a 1:1 complex with TPPE. Also, the observation of a Tyndall effect, in addition to UV absorption and fluorescence spectra, did clearly demonstrate the presence of an AIE. More noteworthy, TPPE and Hg²⁺ were found to form a metal-organic gel (MOG) in the DMF solution. The SEM, TEM, ICP, and Zeta potential analyses confirmed that the fluorescent MOG could further adsorb an excess of Hg²⁺ ions. The BET analyses revealed that the MOG showed a type IV-H3 hysteresis loop according to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry classification. The results of the XRD analysis and of the spectroscopic titrations show that a π-π stacking may be the auxiliary driving force for the gel formation, after that a coordination has taken place. These results indicate that further research on structurally simple metal ion fluorescent probes, which are based on the AIE, is promising for the achievement of a simultaneous fluorescent detection and adsorption of heavy metal pollutants.

A robust thorium-organic framework as a bifunctional platform for iodine adsorption and Cr(VI) sensitization

Simple synthetic modulation based on thorium nitrate and tris((4-carboxyl)phenylduryl)amine (H₃TCBPA) gives rise to a new thorium-based metal-organic framework, Th-TCBPA, which features excellent hydrolytic and thermal stabilities. Incorporating electron-rich TCBPA^3- linkers not only endows Th-TCBPA with high adsorption capacity toward radioiodine vapor, but also makes it a luminescence sensor for the highly sensitive and selective detection of Cr(VI) anions.

Different Stepwise Growth Mechanism of AIE-Active Tetraphenylethylene-Functionalized Metal-Organic Frameworks on Au(111) and Cu(111) Surfaces

Fabricating tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with aggregation- induced emission on surfaces and understanding the growth mechanism have not yet been pursued. Herein, MOFs constructed via the Ullmann-type reaction of a C₂-symmetry TPE derivative (p-BrTBE) on Au(111) and Cu(111) surfaces were thoroughly investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. On a Au(111) surface, p-BrTBE molecules formed the self-assembled pattern at 298 K. Stepwise annealing led to a progressive evolution process, in which the stepwise debromination reaction led to organometallic intermediates, and surface-stabilized radicals and metal-organic networks were formed. By contrast, the relatively ordered MOFs were obtained by replacing the underlying substrate with the more catalytically active Cu(111) at 298 K. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the formation of different networks on Au(111) and Cu(111) was determined by the different conformations of the TBE unit on the different substrates due to the different adsorption energy.

Deciphering the ultrafast dynamics of a new tetraphenylethylene derivative in solutions: charge separation, phenyl ring rotation and CC bond twisting

Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivatives are one of the fundamental units for developing aggregation induced emission (AIE) scaffolds. However, the underlying mechanisms implicated in the relaxation of the excited TPE remain a topic of ongoing discussion, while the effect of bulky substituents on its photobehaviour is still under scrutiny. Here, we report a detailed study of the photophysical properties of a new symmetrical and bulky TPE derivative with terphenyl groups (TTECOOBu) in solvents of different polarities and viscosities. Using femto- to nanosecond (fs-ns) time-resolved absorption and emission techniques, we elucidated the role of the phenyl group rotations and core ethylene bond twisting in its behaviour. We demonstrate that TTECOOBu in DCM solutions undergoes a 600 fs charge separation along the ethylene bond leading to a resonance structure with a lifetime of ∼1 ns. The latter relaxes via two consecutive events: a twisting of the ethylene bond (∼ 9 ps) and a rotation of the phenyl rings (∼ 30 ps) leading to conformationally-relaxed species with a largely Stokes-shifted emission (∼ 12 500 cm^-1). The formation of the red-emitting species clearly depends on the solvent viscosity and rigidity of the medium. Contrary to the photobehavior in the highly viscous triacetin or rigid polymer matrix of PMMA, a reversible mechanism was observed in DCM and DMF solutions. These results provide new findings on the ultrafast mechanisms of excited TPE derivatives and should help in the development of new molecular rotors with interesting AIE properties for photonic applications.

Enhancing Dynamic Spectral Diffusion in Metal-Organic Frameworks through Defect Engineering

The crystal packing of organic chromophores has a profound impact on their photophysical properties. Molecular crystal engineering is generally incapable of producing precisely spaced arrays of molecules for use in photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes, and sensors. A promising alternative strategy is the incorporation of chromophores into crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), leading to matrix coordination-induced emission (MCIE) upon confinement. However, it remains unclear how the precise arrangement of chromophores and defects dictates photophysical properties in these systems, limiting the rational design of well-defined photoluminescent materials. Herein, we report new, robust Zr-based MOFs constructed from the linker tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)ethylene (TCPE4-) that exhibit an unexpected structural transition in combination with a prominent shift from green to blue photoluminescence (PL) as a function of the amount of acid modulator (benzoic, formic, or acetic acid) used during synthesis. Time-resolved PL (TRPL) measurements provide full spectral information and reveal that the observed hypsochromic shift arises due to a higher concentration of linker substitution defects at higher modulator concentrations, leading to broader excitation transfer-induced spectral diffusion. Spectral diffusion of this type has not been reported in a MOF to date, and its observation provides structural information that is otherwise unobtainable using traditional crystallographic techniques. Our findings suggest that defects have a profound impact on the photophysical properties of MOFs and that their presence can be readily tuned to modify energy transfer processes within these materials.

Aggregation-Induced Emission Metallocuboctahedra for White Light Devices

Materials for organic light-emitting devices which exhibit superior emission properties in both the solution and solid states with a high fluorescence quantum yield have been extensively sought after. Herein, two metallocages, S1 and S2, were constructed, and both showed typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features with intense yellow fluorescence. By adding blue-emissive 9,10-dimethylanthracene, pure white light emission can be produced in the solution of S1 and S2. Furthermore, due to the remarkable AIE feature and good fluorescence quantum yield in the solid state, metallocages are highly emissive in the solid state and can be utilized to coat blue LED bulbs or integrate with blue-emitting chips to obtain white light. This study advances the usage of metallocages as practical solid-state fluorescent materials and provides a fresh perspective on highly emissive AIE materials.

Guest-adaptive molecular sensing in a dynamic 3D covalent organic framework

Molecular recognition is an attractive approach to designing sensitive and selective sensors for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Although organic macrocycles and cages have been well-developed for recognising organics by their adaptive pockets in liquids, porous solids for gas detection require a deliberate design balancing adaptability and robustness. Here we report a dynamic 3D covalent organic framework (dynaCOF) constructed from an environmentally sensitive fluorophore that can undergo concerted and adaptive structural transitions upon adsorption of gas and vapours. The COF is capable of rapid and reliable detection of various VOCs, even for non-polar hydrocarbon gas under humid conditions. The adaptive guest inclusion amplifies the host-guest interactions and facilitates the differentiation of organic vapours by their polarity and sizes/shapes, and the covalently linked 3D interwoven networks ensure the robustness and coherency of the materials. The present result paves the way for multiplex fluorescence sensing of various VOCs with molecular-specific responses.

Recent Advances of Anticancer Studies Based on Nano-Fluorescent Metal-Organic Frameworks

Nano-fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (NF-MOFs), a kind of newly emerged nano-scaled platform, can provide visual, rapid, and highly sensitive optical imaging of cancer lesions both in vitro and in vivo. Meanwhile, the excellent porosity, structural tunability, and chemical modifiability also enable NF-MOFs to achieve simultaneous loading of targeted molecules and therapeutic agents. These NF-MOFs not only possess excellent targeted imaging ability, but also can guide the carried cargos to perform precise therapy, drawing considerable attention in current framework of anticancer drug design. In this review, we outline the fluorescence types and response mechanisms of NF-MOFs, and highlight their applications in cancer diagnosis and therapy in recent years. Based on this panorama, we also discuss current issues and future trends of NF-MOFs in biomedical fields, attempting to clarify the potential value of fluorescence imaging guided anticancer investigations.

Tuning the Electrical Conductivity of a Flexible Fabric-Based Cu-HHTP Film through a Novel Redox Interaction between the Guest-Host System

Integration of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and flexible fabrics has been recently considered as a promising strategy applied in wearable electronic devices. We synthesized a flexible fabric-based Cu-HHTP film consisted of Cu²⁺ ions and 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP) via a self-sacrificial template method. The obtained Cu-HHTP film displays an outstanding nanostructured surface and uniformity. Iodine molecules are first introduced into the pores of Cu-HHTP to investigate the influence of guest molecules on electrical conductivity in a 2D guest-host system. After doping, the conductivity of the Cu-HHTP film shows an increased dependent on the doping time, and the maximum value is more than 30 times that of the original MOFs. The enhanced electrical conductivity results from an intriguing redox interaction occurred between the confined iodine molecules and the framework. The organic ligands are oxidized by iodine molecules, and generating new ions allows for subsequent participation in the regulation of the mixed valence bands of copper ions in MOFs, changing the ratio of Cu²⁺/Cu⁺, promoting the charge transport of the framework, and then synergistically enhancing the electronic conductivity. This study successfully prepared a flexible fabric-based conductive I₂@Cu-HHTP film and presented insights into revealing the behavior of iodine molecules after entering the Cu-HHTP pores, expanding the possibilities of Cu-HHTP used in flexible wearable electronics.

Zinc Ion-Based Switch-on Fluorescence-Sensing Probes for the Detection of Tetracycline

Tetracycline (TC) is an antibiotic that has been widely used in the animal husbandry. Thus, TC residues may be found in animal products. Developing simple and sensitive methods for rapid screening of TC in complex samples is of great importance. Herein, we demonstrate a fluorescence-sensing method using Zn²⁺ as sensing probes for the detection of TC. Although TC can emit fluorescence under the excitation of ultraviolet light, its fluorescence is weak because of dynamic intramolecular rotations, leading to the dissipation of excitation energy. With the addition of Zn²⁺ prepared in tris(hydroxymethyl)amino-methane (Tris), TC can coordinate with Zn²⁺ in the Zn²⁺-Tris conjugates to form Tris-Zn²⁺-TC complexes. Therefore, the intramolecular motions of TC are restricted to reduce nonradiative decay, resulting in the enhancement of TC fluorescence. Aggregation-induced emission effects also play a role in the enhancement of TC fluorescence. Our results show that the linear dynamic range for the detection of TC is 15-300 nM. Moreover, the limit of detection was ~7 nM. The feasibility of using the developed method for determination of the concentration of TC in a complex chicken broth sample is also demonstrated in this work.

Precise Design and Deliberate Tuning of Turn-On Fluorescence in Tetraphenylpyrazine-Based Metal−Organic Frameworks

The manipulation on turn-on fluorescence in solid state materials attracts increasing interests owing to their widespread applications. Herein we report how the nonradiative pathways of tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP) units in metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) systems could be hindered through a topological design approach. Two MOFs single crystals of different topology were constructed via the solvothermal reaction of a TPP-based 4,4′,4^″,4^‴-(pyrazine-2,3,5,6-tetrayl) tetrabenzoic acid (H₄TCPP) ligand and metal cations, and their mechanisms of formation have been explored. Compared with the innate low-frequency vibrational modes of flu net Tb-TCPP-1, such as phenyl ring torsions and pyrazine twists, Tb-TCPP-2 adopts a shp net, so the dihedral angle of pyrazine ring and phenyl arms is larger, and the center pyrazine ring in TPP unit is coplanar, which hinders the radiationless decay of TPP moieties in Tb-TCPP-2. Thereby Tb-TCPP-2 exhibits a larger blue-shifted fluorescence and a higher fluorescence quantum yield than Tb-TCPP-1, which is consistent with the reduced nonradiative pathways. Furthermore, Density functional theory (DFT) studies also confirmed aforementioned tunable turn-on fluorescence mechanism. Our work constructed TPP-type MOFs based on a deliberately topological design approach, and the precise design of turn-on fluorescence holds promise as a strategy for controlling nonradiative pathways.

Aggregation-Induced Emission and Circularly Polarized Luminescence Duality in Tetracationic Binaphthyl-Based Cyclophanes

Here, we report an approach to the synthesis of highly charged enantiopure cyclophanes by the insertion of axially chiral enantiomeric binaphthyl fluorophores into the constitutions of pyridinium-based macrocycles. Remarkably, these fluorescent tetracationic cyclophanes exhibit a significant AIE compared to their neutral optically active binaphthyl precursors. A combination of theoretical calculations and time-resolved spectroscopy reveal that the AIE originates from limited torsional vibrations associated with the axes of chirality present in the chiral enantiomeric binaphthyl units and the fine-tuning of their electronic landscape when incorporated within the cyclophane structure. Furthermore, these highly charged enantiopure cyclophanes display CPL responses both in solution and in the aggregated state. This unique duality of AIE and CPL in these tetracationic cyclophanes is destined to be of major importance in future development of photonic devices and bio-applications.

Fluorescence enhancement via structural rigidification inside a self-assembled Pd4 molecular vessel

Restriction of intramolecular motion (RIM) is fundamental for the high emission of aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active molecules in aggregates or the solid-state. However, they are weakly emissive in dilute solution, which limits their application in dilute solutions. A Pd₄ molecular vessel (MP1) was constructed by assembling [cis-(en)Pd(NO₃)₂] (M) with a tetradentate donor (L) in a 2 : 1 molar ratio. The active intramolecular motions of an AIE active molecule SG are restricted in the narrow cavity of MP1 upon encapsulation. As a result, SG displayed significant enhancement in its emission in dilute solution upon addition of MP1. This strategy of achieving high emission of AIE active compounds in dilute solution by confinement driven RIM might have potential in designing materials for high emission in the aggregated state as well as in dilute solution.

Lighting up Micro-/Nanorobots with Fluorescence

Micro-/nanorobots (MNRs) can be autonomously propelled on demand in complex biological environments and thus may bring revolutionary changes to biomedicines. Fluorescence has been widely used in real-time imaging, chemo-/biosensing, and photo-(chemo-) therapy. The integration of MNRs with fluorescence generates fluorescent MNRs with unique advantages of optical trackability, on-the-fly environmental sensitivity, and targeting chemo-/photon-induced cytotoxicity. This review provides an up-to-date overview of fluorescent MNRs. After the highlighted elucidation about MNRs of various propulsion mechanisms and the introductory information on fluorescence with emphasis on the fluorescent mechanisms and materials, we systematically illustrate the design and preparation strategies to integrate MNRs with fluorescent substances and their biomedical applications in imaging-guided drug delivery, intelligent on-the-fly sensing and photo-(chemo-) therapy. In the end, we summarize the main challenges and provide an outlook on the future directions of fluorescent MNRs. This work is expected to attract and inspire researchers from different communities to advance the creation and practical application of fluorescent MNRs on a broad horizon.

Coordination-Guided Conformational Locking of 1D Metal-Organic Frameworks for a Tunable Stimuli-Responsive Luminescence Region

One-dimensional (1D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great potential for designing more sensitive and smart stimuli-responsive photoluminescence metal-organic frameworks (PL-MOFs). Herein, we propose a strategy for constructing the 1D MOFs with tunable stimuli-responsive luminescence regions based on coordination-guided conformational locking. Two flexible 1D MOF microcrystals with trans- and cis-coordination modes, respectively, were synthesized by controlling the spatial constraint of solvents. The two 1D frameworks possess different conformation lockings of gain ligands, which have a great influence on the rotating restrictions and corresponding excited-state behaviors, generating the remarkably distinct color-tunable ranges (cyan-blue to green and cyan-blue to yellow, respectively). On this basis, the two 1D MOF materials, benefiting from the varied stimuli-responsive ranges, have displayed great potential in fulfilling the anticounterfeiting and information encryption applications. These results provide valuable guidance for the development of smart MOF-based stimuli-responsive materials in information identification and data encryption.

Reversible Multielectron Release from Redox-Active Three-Dimensional Molecular Barrels with Ruthenium-Alkenyl Moieties

Three-dimensional molecular barrels Ru₆-4 and Ru₆-5 were synthesized in high yields from dinuclear ruthenium-vinyl clamps and tritopic triphenylamine-derived carboxylate linkers and characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy including ¹H-¹H COSY and ¹H DOSY measurements, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography. The metal frameworks of the cages adopt the shape of twisted trigonal prisms, and they crystallize as racemic mixtures of interdigitating Δ- and Λ-enantiomers with a tight columnar packing in Ru₆-4. Electrochemical studies and redox titrations revealed that the cages are able to release up to 11 electrons on the voltammetric timescale and that their cage structures persist up to the hexacation level. IR and UV-vis-near-infrared spectroelectrochemical studies confirm substituent-dependent intramolecular electronic communication within the π-conjugated 1,3-divinylphenylene backbone in the tricationic states, where all three divinylphenylene-bridged diruthenium clamps are present in mixed-valent radical cation states. The formation of 1:3 charge-transfer salts with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane as the electron acceptor is also demonstrated.

Synthesis and structure of metal-TCPE (metal = Th, Ce) metal-organic frameworks based on 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl) ethylene

Two new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (Th/ Ce -TCPE) based on 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)ethylene were obtained using a straightforward reaction under moderate conditions. Th and Ce formed the central units of this MOF in the mononuclear and in the unusual trinuclear cluster configurations, respectively. The resulting MOFs were analysed by fluorescence spectroscopy to understand their luminescence. The obtained data revealed that benzene's electron cloud density and torsion angle on the ligand were affected by the acetic acid molecule and Th(IV), which caused Th-TCPE to irradiate stronger blue emission, but Ce-TCPE showed no fluorescence due to the self-quenching. Such a unique luminescence property could be used for fluorescence or radiopharmaceutical sensing.

Ultrasensitive point-of-care biochemical sensor based on metal-AIEgen frameworks

Point-of-care (POC) biochemical sensors have found broad applications in areas ranging from clinical diagnosis to environmental monitoring. However, POC sensors often suffer from poor sensitivity. Here, we synthesized a metal-organic framework, where the ligand is the aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen), which we call metal-AIEgen frameworks (MAFs), for use in the ultrasensitive POC biochemical sensors. MAFs process a unique luminescent mechanism of structural rigidity-enhanced emission to achieve a high quantum yield (~99.9%). We optimized the MAFs to show 10²- to 10³-fold enhanced sensitivity for a hydrogel-based POC digital sensor and lateral flow immunoassays (LFIA). MAFs have a high affinity to directly absorb proteins, which can label antibodies for immunoassays. MAFs-based LFIA with enhanced sensitivity shows robust serum detection for POC clinical diagnosis.
