FePt nanoparticles assembled on graphene as enhanced catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction

CD44-hyaluronan mediating endocytosis of iron-platinum alloy nanoparticles induces ferroptotic cell death in mesenchymal-state lung cancer cells with tyrosine kinase inhibitor resistance

While tyrosine kinase inhibitor resistance in cancer is a critical issue in the medical field, it is important for clinical testing as well, since it affects the ultimate outcome of cancer therapy. Yet, no effective solutions have been implemented till date. Clinical observations after tyrosine kinase inhibitor treatment reveal that acquired resistance inevitably limits the curative effects of non-small cell lung cancer treatment because of mutations in the epidermal growth factor receptor gene, which are accompanied by epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Here, for the first time, we report that the transmembrane glycoprotein CD44, which is associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition, chemoresistance, and cancer progression, mediates enhanced endocytosis of iron-platinum alloy nanoparticles (FePt NPs) in the mesenchymal-state gefitinib-resistant (GR+ and M6) cells, via the binding of the CD44 ligand, hyaluronan, to the surface-absorbed hyaluronan-binding protein 2. Upon treatment with FePt NPs, there was higher cellular uptake in mesenchymal-state GR+ and M6 cells, resulting from cell death through ferroptosis and mitochondrial dysfunction, as compared to that observed in the epithelial-state cells. Mechanistically, inactivation of dihydroorotate dehydrogenase elevated the production of mitochondrial lipid peroxidation, and enhanced the cell death in the epithelial-state HCC827 cells, thereby indicating its role in defense against FePt NPs-induced ferroptosis. Furthermore, induction of ferroptosis has been shown to specifically promote the cell death of drug-tolerant "persister" cells and reverse their resistance as well. Therefore, we concluded that FePt NPs preferentially target mesenchymal drug-tolerant "persister" cells and promote ferroptosis, to overcome their resistance. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: In the present study, we identified FePt NPs as an innovative agent for cancer treatment, particularly in mesenchymal-state cells that exhibit TKI resistance. Mesenchymal-state cancer cells showed enhanced uptake of FePt NPs via CD44-HA-mediated endocytosis, accompanied by severe cell death and mitochondrial morphology alterations, in comparison to epithelial-state cells. We further elucidated the mechanism underlying FePt NPs-induced ferroptotic cell death as via a burst of mitochondrial LPO and DHODH protein inactivation. In addition, we found that FePt NPs inhibit tumor growth in TKI-resistant mesenchymal GR+ cell-bearing mice with better efficacy than the ferroptotic inducer RSL3. Our current findings on using FePt NPs to overcome TKI resistance through ferroptosis activation may offer a alternative strategy for improved cancer treatment.

Recent Advances in Colorimetric Tests for the Detection of Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Resistance

Diagnosis of infection-causing microorganisms with sensitive, rapid, selective and economical diagnostic tests is critical to start the right treatment. With these tests, the spread of infections can be prevented. In addition to that, the detection of antimicrobial resistance also makes a significant contribution to public health. In recent years, different types of diagnostic tests have been developed as alternatives to traditional diagnostic tests used in clinics. In particular, colorimetric tests, which minimize the need for an instrument, have advantages owing to their cost effectiveness, rapid response and naked-eye detection and practical use. In this review, we especially focused on pH indicators and nanomaterial-based colorimetric tests in detection of infection-causing microorganisms and antimicrobial resistance.

Preparation and Performance of Carbon-Based Ce-Mn Catalysts for Efficient Degradation of Acetone at Low Temperatures

Based on the porous carbon material from citric acid residue, catalysts of different Ce-Mn ratios were prepared with incipient-wetness impregnation (IWI) to delve into their acetone-degrading performance and relevant mechanisms. When the Ce-Mn molar ratio is 0.8, the prepared catalyst Ce_0.8-Mn/AC shows abundant and uniformly dispersed Mn and Ce particles on the surface. The content of Mn and Ce on the Ce_0.8-Mn/AC surface reaches 5.64% and 0.75%, respectively. At the acetone concentration of 238 mg/m³ (100 ppm), the laws of acetone degradation in different catalysts at different catalyzing temperatures and with various oxygen concentrations were studied, and we found that the rate of acetone degradation by Ce_0.8-Mn/AC can exceed 90% at 250 °C. Cerium oxide and manganese oxide are synergistic in the catalytic degradation of acetone. Adding cerium to manganese-based catalysts can increase the oxygen migration rate in the catalysts and thus raise the reduction rate of lattice oxygen in manganese oxide. The results offer new ideas and approaches for the efficient and comprehensive utilization of bio-fermentation by-products, and for the development of cheap and high degradation performance catalysts for acetone.

Pt-Based Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalysts in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells: Controllable Preparation and Structural Design of Catalytic Layer

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have attracted extensive attention because of their high efficiency, environmental friendliness, and lack of noise pollution. However, PEMFCs still face many difficulties in practical application, such as insufficient power density, high cost, and poor durability. The main reason for these difficulties is the slow oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on the cathode due to the insufficient stability and catalytic activity of the catalyst. Therefore, it is very important to develop advanced platinum (Pt)-based catalysts to realize low Pt loads and long-term operation of membrane electrode assembly (MEA) modules to improve the performance of PEMFC. At present, the research on PEMFC has mainly been focused on two areas: Pt-based catalysts and the structural design of catalytic layers. This review focused on the latest research progress of the controllable preparation of Pt-based ORR catalysts and structural design of catalytic layers in PEMFC. Firstly, the design principle of advanced Pt-based catalysts was introduced. Secondly, the controllable preparation of catalyst structure, morphology, composition and support, and their influence on catalytic activity of ORR and overall performance of PEMFC, were discussed. Thirdly, the effects of optimizing the structure of the catalytic layer (CL) on the performance of MEA were analyzed. Finally, the challenges and prospects of Pt-based catalysts and catalytic layer design were discussed.

Microwave assisted synthesis of Mn3O4 nanograins intercalated into reduced graphene oxide layers as cathode material for alternative clean power generation energy device

Mn₃O₄ nanograins incorporated into reduced graphene oxide as a nanocomposite electrocatalyst have been synthesized via one-step, facile, and single-pot microwave-assisted hydrothermal technique. The nanocomposites were employed as cathode material of fuel cells for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The synthesized product was thoroughly studied by using important characterization, such as XRD for the structure analysis and FESEM and TEM analyses to assess the morphological structures of the material. Raman spectra were employed to study the GO, rGO bands and formation of Mn₃O₄@rGO nanocomposite. FTIR and UV–Vis spectroscopic analysis were used to verify the effective synthesis of the desired electrocatalyst. The Mn₃O₄@rGO-10% nanocomposite with 10 wt% of graphene oxide was used to alter the shiny surface of the working electrode and applied for ORR in O₂ purged 0.5 M KOH electrolyte solution. The Mn₃O₄@rGO-10% nanocomposite electrocatalyst exhibited outstanding performance with an improved current of − 0.738 mA/cm² and shifted overpotential values of − 0.345 V when compared to other controlled electrodes, including the conventionally used Pt/C catalyst generally used for ORR activity. The tolerance of Mn₃O₄@rGO-10% nanocomposite was tested by injecting a higher concentration of methanol, i.e., 0.5 M, and found unsusceptible by methanol crossover. The stability test of the synthesized electrocatalyst after 3000 s was also considered, and it demonstrated excellent current retention of 98% compared to commercially available Pt/C electrocatalyst. The synthesized nanocomposite material could be regarded as an effective and Pt-free electrocatalyst for practical ORR that meets the requirement of low cost, facile fabrication, and adequate stability.

Strategic design of Fe and N co-doped hierarchically porous carbon as superior ORR catalyst: from the perspective of nanoarchitectonics

In this study, we present microporous carbon (MPC), hollow microporous carbon (HMC) and hierarchically porous carbon (HPC) to demonstrate the importance of strategical designing of nanoarchitectures in achieving advanced catalyst (or electrode) materials, especially in the context of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Based on the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and ORR studies, we identify a marked structural effect depending on the porosity. Specifically, mesopores are found to have the most profound influence by significantly improving electrochemical wettability and accessibility. We also identify that macropore contributes to the rate capability of the porous carbons. The results of the rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) method also demonstrate the advantages of strategically designed double-shelled nanoarchitecture of HPC to increase the overall electron transfer number (n) closer to four by offering a higher chance of the double two-electron pathways. Next, selective doping of highly active Fe-N x sites on HPC is obtained by increasing the nitrogen content in HPC. As a result, the optimized Fe and N co-doped HPC demonstrate high ORR catalytic activity comparable to the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C in alkaline electrolyte. Our findings, therefore, strongly advocate the importance of a strategic design of advanced catalyst (or electrode) materials, especially in light of both structural and doping effects, from the perspective of nanoarchitectonics.

A perspective on the controlled synthesis of iron-based nanoalloys for the oxygen reduction reaction

The worsening ecological environment is calling for clean energy alternatives, among which hydrogen fuel cells have been one of the hot topics. The commercialized Pt/C catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the cathode of fuel cells is suffering from its high cost, serious scarcity and so on. Hence, the exploration on alternative ORR catalysts has attracted much attention. Iron(Fe)-based nanoalloys have shown advantages of low cost, high abundance, and pleasant ORR activity. In this feature, we have summarized Fe-based nanoalloy structures and our recent progress on controllable synthesis as well as their ORR performance, including iron-platinum (Fe-Pt), iron carbide (Fe-C), and iron nitride (Fe-N). Finally, the perspective on this type of ORR electrocatalyst is also discussed.

Modular super-assembly of hierarchical superstructures from monomicelle building blocks

Manipulating the super-assembly of polymeric building blocks still remains a great challenge due to their thermodynamic instability. Here, we report on a type of three-dimensional hierarchical core-satellite SiO₂@monomicelle spherical superstructures via a previously unexplored monomicelle interfacial super-assembly route. Notably, in this superstructure, an ultrathin single layer of monomicelle subunits (~18 nm) appears in a typically hexagon-like regular discontinuous distribution (adjacent micelle distance of ~30 nm) on solid spherical interfaces (SiO₂), which is difficult to achieve by conventional super-assembled methods. Besides, the number of the monomicelles on colloidal SiO₂ interfaces can be quantitatively controlled (from 76 to 180). This quantitative control can be precisely manipulated by tuning the interparticle electrostatic interactions (the intermicellar electrostatic repulsion and electrostatic attractions between the monomicelle units and the SiO₂ substrate). This monomicelle interfacial super-assembly strategy will enable a controllable way for building multiscale hierarchical regular micro- and/or macroscale materials and devices.

Tannic acid: a crosslinker leading to versatile functional polymeric networks: a review

With the thriving of mussel-inspired polyphenol chemistry as well as the demand for low-cost analogues to polydopamine in adhesive design, tannic acid has gradually become a research focus because of its wide availability, health benefits and special chemical properties. As a natural building block, tannic acid could be used as a crosslinker either supramolecularly or chemically, ensuring versatile functional polymeric networks for various applications. Up to now, a systematic summary on tannic-acid-based networks has still been waiting for an update and outlook. In this review, the common features of tannic acid are summarized in detail, followed by the introduction of covalent and non-covalent crosslinking methods leading to various tannic-acid-based materials. Moreover, recent progress in the application of tannic acid composites is also summarized, including bone regeneration, skin adhesives, wound dressings, drug loading and photothermal conversion. Above all, we also provide further prospects concerning tannic-acid-crosslinked materials.

Magnetic Adsorbents for Wastewater Treatment: Advancements in Their Synthesis Methods

The remediation of water streams, polluted by various substances, is important for realizing a sustainable future. Magnetic adsorbents are promising materials for wastewater treatment. Although numerous techniques have been developed for the preparation of magnetic adsorbents, with effective adsorption performance, reviews that focus on the synthesis methods of magnetic adsorbents for wastewater treatment and their material structures have not been reported. In this review, advancements in the synthesis methods of magnetic adsorbents for the removal of substances from water streams has been comprehensively summarized and discussed. Generally, the synthesis methods are categorized into five groups, as follows: direct use of magnetic particles as adsorbents, attachment of pre-prepared adsorbents and pre-prepared magnetic particles, synthesis of magnetic particles on pre-prepared adsorbents, synthesis of adsorbents on preprepared magnetic particles, and co-synthesis of adsorbents and magnetic particles. The main improvements in the advanced methods involved making the conventional synthesis a less energy intensive, more efficient, and simpler process, while maintaining or increasing the adsorption performance. The key challenges, such as the enhancement of the adsorption performance of materials and the design of sophisticated material structures, are discussed as well.

Magnetic Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Anisotropy, and Applications

Anisotropy is an important and widely present characteristic of materials that provides desired direction-dependent properties. In particular, the introduction of anisotropy into magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) has become an effective method to obtain new characteristics and functions that are critical for many applications. In this review, we first discuss anisotropy-dependent ferromagnetic properties, ranging from intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy to extrinsic shape and surface anisotropy, and their effects on the magnetic properties. We further summarize the syntheses of monodisperse MNPs with the desired control over the NP dimensions, shapes, compositions, and structures. These controlled syntheses of MNPs allow their magnetism to be finely tuned for many applications. We discuss the potential applications of these MNPs in biomedicine, magnetic recording, magnetotransport, permanent magnets, and catalysis.

Modulating the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction performances of bismuth nanoparticles with carbon substrates with controlled degrees of oxidation

The catalytic performances of metal nanoparticles can be widely tuned and promoted by the metal-support interactions. Here, we report that the morphologies and electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) properties of bismuth nanoparticles (BiNPs) can be rationally modulated by their interactions with carbon black (CB) supports by controlling the degree of surface oxidation. Appropriately oxidized CB supports can provide sufficient oxygen-containing groups for anchoring BiNPs with tunable sizes and surface areas, desirable key intermediate adsorption abilities, appropriate surface wettability, and adequate electron transfer abilities. As a result, the optimized Bi/CB catalysts exhibited a promoted CO₂RR performance with a Faradaic efficiency of 94% and a current density of 16.7 mA cm^-2 for HCOO^- at -0.9 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode. Our results demonstrate the significance of regulating the interactions between supports and metal nanoparticles for both synthesis of the catalyst and electrolysis applications, which may find broader applicability in more electrocatalyst designs.

Synthesis of raspberry-like antimony-platinum (SbPt) nanoparticles as highly active electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction

Binary transition metals can facilitate the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through the synergistic integration of different electrochemical properties. To determine binary transition metals that are highly active, Greely et al. conducted a simulation of 256 different binary transition metals. They demonstrated that BiPt, PtRu, AsPt, SbPt, BiRh, RhRe, PtRe, AsRu, IrRu, RhRu, IrRe, and PtRh could be used as efficient electrocatalysts for HER. However, only few of them are synthesized and used as electrocatalysts. In this work, we report the synthesis of the raspberry-like antimony-platinum (SbPt) nanoparticles (NPs) via a colloidal nanocrystal synthesis. These NPs exhibited efficient activity with a low overpotential of 27 mV to reach 10 mA cm^-2 in acidic media. We conducted long-term durability test for 90,000 s under an applied voltage of 0.5 V (vs. RHE) and cycling tests of over 10,000 cycles under an applied voltage of 0.1 to -0.5 V (vs. RHE). The high activity exhibited by the raspberry-like SbPt NPs may be due to the following reasons: (1) the raspberry-like SbPt NPs exhibited versatile active exposed (110), (100), (101), and (012) facets as efficient HER catalysts, and (2) as confirmed by both the density functional theory (DFT) simulation and experimental results, the presence of Sb 3d subsurface broadened the Pt surface d-band, which caused synergistic effects on water splitting. In summary, synthesis of the new colloidal raspberry-like SbPt NPs is essential to elucidate the fundamental properties of the nanomaterial and nanostructure design. This study could facilitate the development of Pt-group materials that can be used as HER catalysts.

Recent Advances in Noble Metal Catalysts for Hydrogen Production from Ammonia Borane

Interest in chemical hydrogen storage has increased, because the supply of fossil fuels are limited and the harmful effects of burning fossil fuels on the environment have become a focus of public concern. Hydrogen, as one of the energy carriers, is useful for the sustainable development. However, it is widely known that controlled storage and release of hydrogen are the biggest barriers in large-scale application of hydrogen energy. Ammonia borane (NH3BH3, AB) is deemed as one of the most promising hydrogen storage candidates on account of its high hydrogen to mass ratio and environmental benignity. Development of efficient catalysts to further improve the properties of chemical kinetics in the dehydrogenation of AB under appropriate conditions is of importance for the practical application of this system. In previous studies, a variety of noble metal catalysts and their supported metal catalysts (Pt, Pd, Au, Rh, etc.) have presented great properties in decomposing the chemical hydride to generate hydrogen, thus, promoting their application in dehydrogenation of AB is urgent. We analyzed the hydrolysis of AB from the mechanism of hydrogen release reaction to understand more deeply. Based on these characteristics, we aimed to summarize recent advances in the development of noble metal catalysts, which had excellent activity and stability for AB dehydrogenation, with prospect towards realization of efficient noble metal catalysts.

Chirality from Cryo-Electron Tomograms of Nanocrystals Obtained by Lateral Disassembly and Surface Etching of Never-Dried Chitin

The complex nature of typical colloids and corresponding interparticle interactions pose a challenge in understanding their self-assembly. This specifically applies to biological nanoparticles, such as those obtained from chitin, which typically are hierarchical and multidimensional. In this study, we obtain chitin nanocrystals by one-step heterogeneous acid hydrolysis of never-dried crab residues. Partial deacetylation facilitates control over the balance of electrostatic charges (ζ-potential in the range between +58 and +75 mV) and therefore affords chitin nanocrystals (DE-ChNC) with axial aspect (170-350 nm in length), as determined by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. We find that the surface amines generated by deacetylation, prior to hydrolysis, play a critical role in the formation of individual chitin nanocrystals by the action of a dual mechanism. We directly access the twisting feature of chitin nanocrystals using electron tomography (ET) and uncover the distinctive morphological differences between chitin nanocrystals extracted from nondeacetylated chitin, ChNC, which are bundled and irregular, and DE-ChNC (single, straight nanocrystals). Whereas chitin nanocrystals obtained from dried chitin precursors are known to be twisted and form chiral nematic liquid crystals, our ET measurements indicate no dominant twisting or handedness for the nanocrystals obtained from the never-dried source. Moreover, no separation into typical isotropic and anisotropic phases occurs after 2 months at rest. Altogether, we highlight the critical role of drying the precursors or the nanopolysaccharides to develop chirality.

2D Mesoporous Channels of PMO; a Platform for Cluster-Like Pt Synthesis and Catalytic Activity in Nitrophenol Reduction

Thiourea-bridged organosiloxane is used to synthesize a periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO). Since this PMO has an S-enriched surface, owing to thiourea functional groups, it exhibits strong coordination toward Pt ions, and it shows a high tunability in the Pt nanoparticles size. This hybrid mesoporous material is employed as a catalyst in the efficient reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol at room temperature in an aqueous media.

Bimetallic Pd96Fe4 nanodendrites embedded in graphitic carbon nanosheets as highly efficient anode electrocatalysts

A facile route to anchor a nanoalloy catalyst on graphitic carbon nanosheets (GCNs) has been developed for preparing high-performance electrode materials for application in direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs). Uniformly dispersed bimetallic Pd-Fe nanoparticles (NPs) with tunable composition have been immobilized on GCNs derived from mesocarbon microbeads (MCMBs) by a one-pot radiolytic reduction method. The Pd-Fe/GCN hybrid shows promising electrocatalytic activity for the methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, tri-ethylene glycol and glycerol oxidation reactions in alkaline medium. The as-prepared flower-shape Pd₉₆Fe₄/GCN nanohybrids have high mass activity for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), which is ∼36 times (11 A per mg Pd) higher than that of their monometallic counterparts. Moreover, the onset oxidation potential for the EOR on the Pd₉₆Fe₄/GCN nanohybrids negatively shifts ca. 780 mV compared to that on commercial Pd/C electrocatalysts, suggesting fast kinetics and superior electrocatalytic activity. Additionally, chronoamperometry measurements display good long-term cycling stability of the Pd₉₆Fe₄/GCN nanohybrids for the EOR and also demonstrate only ∼7% loss in forward current density after 1000 cycles. The superior catalytic activity and stability may have originated from the modified electronic structure of the Pd-Fe nanoalloys and excellent physicochemical properties of the graphitic nanosheets. The present synthetic route using GCNs as the supporting material will contribute to further design of multimetallic nanoarchitectures with controlled composition and desired functions for fuel cell applications.

Optimizing graphene content in a NiSe/graphene nanohybrid counter electrode to enhance the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells

Nickel selenide (NiSe) nanoparticles were grown on graphene nanosheets (GN) with different mass ratios to obtain their corresponding NiSe/GNx (x = 0.25 to 1.00) nanohybrids by a facile in situ hydrothermal process to integrate the advantages of the high specific surface area of graphene and the homogeneously immobilized catalytic sites of NiSe. The nanohybrid with a mass ratio of 1 : 0.50 (i.e., NiSe/GN0.50) exhibited higher electrocatalytic activity and electrolyte diffusion. Thus, NiSe/GN0.50 exhibited an improved photo-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12% (η = 8.62%) compared to a standard Pt (η = 7.68%)-based dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). This improved PCE mainly originated from the catalytic ability of NiSe and the multiple interfacial electron transfer pathways of graphene, resulting in enhanced charge transfer and fast tri-iodide reduction kinetics at the counter electrode/electrolyte interface. The results obtained from the cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical AC-impedance (EIS) and Tafel polarization studies validated the synergistic effects of NiSe and GN and the high potential of this nanohybrid as an efficient counter electrode (CE) for DSSCs.

Functional molecule guided evolution of MnO x nanostructure patterns on N-graphene and their oxygen reduction activity

In this work, we systematically followed the growth of MnO_x nanostructures on trimesic acid (TMA)/benzoic acid (BA) functionalised nitrogen doped graphene (NG) and studied their electrocatalytic activity towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In these hybrid materials the MnO_x phase, their morphology and Mn surface valency were guided by the functional molecules, their concentration and the duration of reaction, which in turn significantly affected the ORR activity. During the growth in the presence of TMA, agglomerated nanostructures were formed at 2 h reaction, which transformed to well dispersed 4–7 nm particles at 6 h over a large area of NG. However, in the presence of BA, MnOOH nano-flecks were formed at 2 h and transformed to MnOOH nanowires and oval shaped Mn₃O₄ particles at 8 h of reaction. The valency of surface Mn on the different MnO_x nanostructures was ascertained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The ORR activity of samples were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and rotating disc electrode (RDE) in alkaline medium. Among all the studied samples, the highest ORR activity with most efficient 4e⁻ transfer process is observed for TMA modified NG-MnO_X obtained at 6 h of reaction, which is due to its well dispersed nanostructure morphology.

Promoting Electrocatalysis upon Aerogels

Electrocatalysis plays a prominent role in renewable energy conversion and storage, enabling a number of sustainable processes for future technologies. There are generally three strategies to improve the efficiency (or activity) of the electrocatalysts: i) increasing the intrinsic activity of the catalyst itself, ii) improving the exposure of active sites, and iii) accelerating mass transfer during catalysis (both reactants and products). These strategies are not mutually exclusive and can ideally be addressed simultaneously, leading to the largest improvements in activity. Aerogels, as featured by large surface area, high porosity, and self-supportability, provide a platform that matches all the aforementioned criteria for the design of efficient electrocatalysts. The field of aerogel synthesis has seen much progress in recent years, mainly thanks to the rapid development of nanotechnology. Employing precursors with different properties enables the resulting aerogel with targeted catalytic properties and improved performances. Here, the design strategies of aerogel catalysts are demonstrated, and their performance for several electrochemical reactions is reviewed. The common principles that govern electrocatalysis are further discussed for each category of reactions, thus serving as a guide to the development of future aerogel electrocatalysts.

Oxygen Reduction Reaction Activity of Microwave Mediated Solvothermal Synthesized CeO2/g-C3N4 Nanocomposite

Electrocatalytic active species like transition metal oxides have been widely combined with carbon-based nanomaterials for enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) studies because of the synergistic effect arising between different components. The aim of the present study is to synthesize CeO₂/g-C₃N₄ system and compare the ORR activity with bare CeO₂. Ceria (CeO₂) embedded on g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite was synthesized by a single-step microwave-mediated solvothermal method. This cerium oxide-based nanocomposite displays enhanced ORR activity and electrochemical stability as compared to bare ceria.

Oxidatively induced exposure of active surface area during microwave assisted formation of Pt3Co nanoparticles for oxygen reduction reaction

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the rate-limiting reaction in proton exchange membrane fuel cells, can efficiently be facilitated by properly manufactured platinum catalysts alloyed with late 3d transition metals. Herein we synthesize a platinum : cobalt nanoparticulate catalyst with a 3 : 1 atomic ratio by reduction of a dry metalorganic precursor blend within a commercial household microwave oven. The formed nanoparticles are simultaneously anchored to a carbon black support that enables large Pt surface area. Two separate microwave treatment steps were employed, where step one constitutes a fast oxidative treatment for revealing active surface area while a reductive secondary annealing treatment promotes a Pt rich surface. The resulting Pt₃Co/C catalyst (∼3.4 nm) demonstrates an enhanced ORR activity directly attributed to incorporated Co with a specific and mass activity of 704 μA cm_Pt⁻² and 352 A g_Pt⁻¹ corresponding to an increase by 279% and 66% respectively compared to a commercial Pt/C (∼1.8 nm) catalyst measured under identical conditions. The method's simplicity, scalability and novelty is expected to further assist in Pt–Co development and bring the catalyst one step closer toward commercialization and utility in fuel cells.

Development of a hypoxic nanocomposite containing high-Z element as 5-fluorouracil carrier activated self-amplified chemoradiotherapy co-enhancement

The synergetic effect of chemoradiotherapy achievement is encouraging but significantly hampered by the prevalence of hypoxia, leading to drug/radiation resistance in solid tumours. To address the problem and improve the efficiency of cancer therapy, a lamellar-structure multifunctional graphene oxide (GO) drug-delivery system with an average size of 243 nm, co-delivering of metronidazole (MI), 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and FePt magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), was successfully designed and synthesized in the study. The integration of hypoxic drug carrier loading radiosensitizers and chemotherapeutic drugs simultaneously, combines the properties of hypoxia-sensitivity and chemoradiotherapy co-enhancement within a single nanoplatform, which is expected to provide new ideas for cancer treatment. Through in vitro tests, the hypoxia-sensitivity and cytotoxicity of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) of the nanocomposites (NCs) were proved. Moreover, the additive effect between MI, 5-FU and FePt MNPs in cytotoxicity and radiation sensitization aspects is disclosed. It performs an enhanced cell proliferation inhibition and makes up a self-amplified radiotherapy enhancement system that improves radiation efficiency and cell radiosensitivity simultaneously. In conclusion, the study recommended a novel and promising multifunctional nanoplatform which performed a self-amplified effect that activated chemoradiotherapy co-enhancement.

Analysis of Defect Recovery in Reduced Graphene Oxide and Its Application as a Heater for Self-Healing Polymers

Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) obtained from graphene oxide has received much attention because of its simple and cost-effective manufacturing process. Previous studies have demonstrated the scalable production of RGO with relatively high quality; however, irreducible defects on RGO deteriorate the unique intrinsic physical properties of graphene, such as high-mobility electrical charge transport, limiting its potential applicability. Using the enhanced chemical reactivity of such defects, atomic layer deposition (ALD) can be a useful method to selectively passivate the defect sites. Herein, we analyzed the selective formation of Pt by ALD on the defect sites of RGO and investigated the effect of Pt formation on the electrical properties of RGO by using ultrafast terahertz (THz) laser spectroscopy. Time-resolved THz measurements directly corroborated that the degree of the defect-recovering property of ALD Pt-treated RGO appearing as Auger-type sub-picosecond relaxation, which is otherwise absent in pristine RGO. In addition, the conductivity improvement of Pt-recovered RGO was theoretically explained by density functional theory calculations. The ALD Pt-passivated RGO yielded a superior platform for the fabrication of a highly conductive and transparent graphene heater. By using the ALD Pt/RGO heater embedded underneath scratched self-healing polymer materials, we also demonstrated the effective recovery property of self-healing polymers with high-performance heating capability. Our work is expected to result in significant advances toward practical applications for RGO-based flexible and transparent electronics.

Large-Area 3D Hierarchical Superstructures Assembled from Colloidal Nanoparticles

Assembling nanosized building blocks into macroscopic 3D complex structures is challenging. Here, nanosized metal and semiconductor building blocks with a variety of sizes and shapes (spheres, stars, and rods) are successfully assembled into a broad range of hierarchical (nanometer to micrometer) assemblies of functional materials in centimeter size using butterfly wings as templates. This is achieved by the introduction of steric hindrance to the assembly process, which compensates for attraction from the environmentally sensitive hydrogen bonds and prevents the aggregation of nanosized building blocks. Of these materials, Au nanostar assemblies show a superior enhancement in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance (rhodamine 6G, 1506 cm^-1 ) under 532, 633, and 780 nm excitation-this is 3.1-4.4, 3.6-3.9, and 2.9-47.3 folds surpassing Au nanosphere assemblies and commercial SERS substrates (Q-SERS), respectively. This method provides a versatile route for the assembly of various nanosized building blocks into different 3D superstructures and for the construction of hybrid nanomaterials and nanocomposites.

Elaboration of Nanomagnet Arrays: Organization and Magnetic Properties of Mass-Selected FePt Nanoparticles Deposited on Epitaxially Grown Graphene on Ir(111)

The moiré pattern created by the epitaxy of a graphene sheet on an iridium substrate can be used as a template for the growth of 2D atomic or cluster arrays. We observed for the first time a coherent organization of hard magnetic preformed FePt nanoparticles on the 2D lattice of graphene on Ir(111). Nanoparticles of 2 nm diameter have been mass selected in a gas phase and deposited with low energy on the hexagonal moiré pattern. Their morphology and organization have been investigated using grazing incidence small angle x-ray scattering, while their magnetic properties have been studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, both pointing to a FePt cluster-graphene surface specific interaction. The spatial coherence of the nanoparticles is preserved upon annealing up to 700 °C where the hard magnetic phase of FePt is obtained.
