Abstract
Catalytic hydrosilylation is one of the important synthetic approaches to prepare functional organosilicon polymers. Herein, a functional silicon copolymer is constructed by polyhydrosilylation reaction between a novel 3,7-bis(dimethyl silane)-10-(2-ethylhexyl)-10H-phenothiazine monomer and a neutral tetrapyrrolic macrocycle, namely, 5,5,10,15,15,20-hexamethyl-10α, 20α-bis(4-[ethynylphenyl]) calix[4]pyrrole. The as-constructed copolymer (Mn = 9609, PDI = 2.2) is investigated as an extractant for organic anions as their tetrabutylammonium salts under interfacial aqueous-organic (water-chloroform) conditions. In this context, a distinctive naked-eye colorimetric as well as fluorescence detection method is developed based on anion-directed hydrogen-bonding interactions. This kind of color/fluorescence monitoring serves as a handy tool for rapid screening of anion extraction processes. The copolymer exhibits high selectivity toward extraction of chloride anion. This study augments the field of polycarbosilanes, poly(silylenevinylene)s in particular, allowing access to a new application window that can be further advanced with good grace in near future.

Abstract
A series of squaramide-based heteroditopic [2]rotaxanes consisting of isophthalamide macrocycle and squaramide axle components are synthesized using an alkali metal cation template-directed stoppering methodology. This work highlights the unprecedented sodium cation template coordination of the Lewis basic squaramide carbonyls for interlocked structure synthesis. Extensive quantitative 1 H NMR spectroscopic anion and ion-pair recognition studies reveal the [2]rotaxane hosts are capable of cooperative sodium halide ion-pair mechanical bond axle-macrocycle component recognition, eliciting up to 20-fold enhancements in binding strengths for bromide and iodide, wherein the Lewis basic carbonyls and Lewis acidic NH hydrogen bond donors of the squaramide axle motif operate as cation and anion receptive sites simultaneously in an ambidentate fashion. Notably, varying the length and nature of the polyether cation binding unit of the macrocycle component dramatically influences the ion-pair binding affinities of the [2]rotaxanes, even overcoming direct contact NaCl ion-pair binding modes in polar organic solvents. Furthermore, the cooperative ion-pair binding properties of the squaramide-based heteroditopic [2]rotaxanes are exploited to successfully extract solid sodium halide salts into organic media.

Abstract
The ion-pair recognition ability of calix[4]pyrrole was utilized to form a multicomponent monomeric assembly and a linear supramolecular polymer via concurrent anion and bis-cation complexation. The inherent dynamic interactions of these assemblies were further used to construct pseudorotaxanes in monomeric and supramolecular polymer forms with pillar[5]arene.

Abstract
ConspectusProteins exhibit high-binding affinity and selectivity, as well as remarkable catalytic performance. Their binding pockets are hydrophobic but also contain polar and charged groups to contribute to the binding of polar organic molecules in aqueous solution. In the past decades, the synthesis of biomimetic receptors featuring sizable aromatic cavities equipped with converging polar groups has received considerable attention. "Temple" cages, naphthotubes, and aryl-extended calix[4]pyrroles are privileged examples of synthetic scaffolds displaying functionalized hydrophobic cavities capable of binding polar substrates. In particular, calix[4]pyrroles are macrocycles containing four pyrrole rings connected through their pyrrolic 2- and 5-positions by tetra-substituted sp3 carbon atoms (meso-substituents). In 1996, Sessler introduced the meso-octamethyl calix[4]pyrrole as an outstanding receptor for anion binding. Independently, Sessler and Floriani also showed that the introduction of aryl substituents in the meso-positions produced aryl-extended calix[4]pyrroles as a mixture of configurational isomers. In addition, aryl-extended calix[4]pyrroles bearing two and four meso-aryl substituents (walls) were reported. The cone conformation of "two-wall" αα-aryl-extended calix[4]pyrroles features an aromatic cleft with a polar binding site defined by four converging pyrrole NHs. On the other hand, "four-wall" αααα-calix[4]pyrrole isomers possess a deep polar aromatic cavity closed at one end by the converging pyrrole NHs. Because of their functionalized interior, aryl-extended calix[4]pyrroles are capable of binding anions, ion-pairs, and electron-rich neutral molecules in organic solvents. However, in water, they are restricted to the inclusion of neutral polar guests.Since the early 2000s, our research group has been involved in the design and synthesis of "two-wall" and "four-wall" aryl-extended calix[4]pyrroles and their derivatives, such as aryl-extended calix[4]pyrrole cavitands and super aryl-extended calix[4]pyrroles. In this Account, we mainly summarize our own results on the binding of charged and neutral polar guests with these macrocyclic receptors in organic solvents and in water. We also describe the applications of calix[4]pyrrole derivatives in the sensing of creatinine, the facilitated transmembrane transport of anions and amino acids, and the monofunctionalization of bis-isonitriles. Moreover, we explain the use of calix[4]pyrrole receptors as model systems for the quantification of anion-π interactions and the hydrophobic effect. Finally, we discuss the self-assembly of dimeric capsules and unimolecular metallo-cages based on calix[4]pyrrole scaffolds. We comment on their binding properties, as well as on those of bis-calix[4]pyrroles having a fully covalent structure. In molecular recognition, aryl-extended calix[4]pyrroles and their derivatives are considered valuable receptors owing to their ability to interact with a wide variety of electron-rich, neutral, and charged guests. Calix[4]pyrrole scaffolds have also been applied in the development of molecular sensors, ionophores, transmembrane carriers, supramolecular protecting groups and molecular containers modulating chemical reactivity, among others. We believe that the design of new calix[4]pyrrole receptors and the investigation of their binding properties may lead to promising applications in many research areas, such as supramolecular catalysis, chemical biology and materials science. We hope that this Account will serve to spread the knowledge of the supramolecular chemistry of calix[4]pyrroles among supramolecular and nonsupramolecular chemists alike.

Abstract
Herein, the synthesis and X-ray structures of three α,β "two wall" aryl-extended calix[4]pyrroles having either identical (symmetrically substituted) or different (non-symmetrically substituted) meso-aryl substituents (aryl=4-ethynylphenyl and 4-iodophenyl) are reported. The X-ray structure of the co-crystal formed by the two symmetrically substituted calix[4]pyrroles is also described. In the solid state, all studied α,β-calix[4]pyrroles exhibit a 1,3-alternate conformation with two co-crystallized acetonitrile solvent molecules H-bonded to adjacent cis-pyrrole rings. Remarkably, the 1,3-conformer of the non-symmetrically substituted iodophenyl/ethynylphenyl compound is intrinsically chiral. The two enantiomers are present in the average asymmetric unit in a 65 : 35 occupancy ratio displaying a head-to-tail directional disorder. This is due to the functional complementarity and the isosteric and isoelectronic properties of the para-substituents: iodo and ethynyl. That is, the negative belt of iodine is similar to the negative π-system of the C≡C triple bond and the σ-hole in the iodine atom is similar to the positive proton at the C≡C-H group.

Abstract
The incorporation of aryl substituents at the meso-positions of calix[4]pyrrole (C4P) scaffolds produces aryl-extended (AE) and super-aryl-extended (SAE) calix[4]pyrroles. The cone conformation of the all-α isomers of "multi-wall" AE-C4Ps and SAE-C4Ps displays deep aromatic clefts or cavities. In particular, "four-wall" receptors feature an aromatic polar cavity closed at one end with four convergent pyrrole rings and fully open at the opposite end. This makes AE- and SAE-C4P scaffolds effective receptors for the molecular recognition of negatively charged ions and neutral guest molecules with donor-acceptor and hydrogen bonding motifs. In addition, adequately functionalized all-α isomers of multi wall AE- and SAE-C4P scaffolds self-assemble into uni-molecular and supra-molecular aggregates displaying capsular and cage-like structures. The self-assembly process requires the presence of template ions or molecules that lock the C4P cone conformation and complementing the inner polar functions and volumes of their cavities. We envisioned performing an in-depth revision of AE- and SAE-C4P scaffolds owing to their importance in different domains such as supramolecular chemistry, biology, material sciences and pharmaceutical chemistry. Herewith, besides the synthetic details on the elaboration of their structures, we also draw attention to their diverse applications. The organization of this review is mainly based on the number of "walls" present in the AE-C4P derivatives and their structural modifications. The sections are further divided based on the C4P functions and applications. The authors are convinced that this review will be of interest to researchers working in the general area of supramolecular chemistry as well as those involved in the study of the binding properties and applications of C4P derivatives.

Abstract
A molecular capsule (1) consisting of two calix[4]pyrroles connected via ethylene diamide linkers has been prepared as an anion receptor. 1H NMR spectroscopic studies carried out in CD2Cl2 revealed that receptor 1 recognizes a variety of anions with different binding modes and stoichiometries. For instance, receptor 1 binds fluoride and acetate with 1:2 receptor/anion stoichiometry and other test anions with 1:1 stoichiometry in solution when their respective tetrabutylammonium (TBA+) salts were used. In contrast, with tetraethylammnium (TEA+) salts, receptor 1 forms 1:2 complexes with chloride and bromide in addition to fluoride, overcoming expected Columbic repulsions between the anions co-bound in close proximity. Receptor 1 is also able to bind oxoanions, such as oxalate (C2O42-), dihydrogen phosphate (H2PO4-), sulfate (SO42-), and hydrogen pyrophosphate (HP2O73-), in the form of 1:1 complexes as the result of presumed cooperation between the two calix[4]pyrrole subunits. The selectivity of receptor 1 for fluoride versus dihydrogen phosphate varies depending on their relative concentrations. For instance, in the presence of less than 1.0 equiv of an equimolar mixture of fluoride and dihydrogen phosphate, receptor 1 shows high selectivity for dihydrogen phosphate. In contrast, in the presence of ≥2.0 anion equiv, receptor 1 binds fluoride preferentially, forming a 1:2 complex. Moreover, when treated with F-, the preformed 1:1 H2PO4- complex of receptor 1 is converted to the corresponding 1:2 receptor/fluoride complex with the release of the prebound dihydrogen phosphate anion. As inferred from gas-phase computations, this seemingly counterintuitive behavior is rationalized in terms of the precomplexed dihydrogen phosphate serving to reduce the reorganization energy required to bind two fluoride anions. The presence of a water molecule in addition to the bound fluoride anions may also favor the formation of the 1:2 F- complex. The present study provides a new approach for fine-tuning the binding selectivity of polytopic anion receptors.

Abstract

Chalcogen bonding (ChB) is rapidly rising to prominence
in supramolecular
chemistry as a powerful sigma (σ)-hole-based noncovalent interaction,
especially for applications in the field of molecular recognition.
Recent studies have demonstrated ChB donor strength and potency to
be remarkably sensitive to local electronic environments, including
redox-switchable on/off anion binding and sensing capability. Influencing
the unique electronic and geometric environment sensitivity of ChB
interactions through simultaneous cobound metal cation recognition,
herein, we present the first potassium chloride-selective heteroditopic
ion-pair receptor. The direct conjugation of benzo-15-crown-5 ether
(B15C5) appendages to Te centers in a bis-tellurotriazole framework
facilitates alkali metal halide (MX) ion-pair binding through the
formation of a cofacial intramolecular bis-B15C5 M+ (M+ = K+, Rb+, Cs+) sandwich
complex and bidentate ChB···X– formation.
Extensive quantitative 1H NMR ion-pair affinity titration
experiments, solid–liquid and liquid–liquid extraction,
and U-tube transport studies all demonstrate unprecedented KCl selectivity
over all other group 1 metal chlorides. It is demonstrated that the
origin of the receptor’s ion-pair binding cooperativity and
KCl selectivity arises from an electronic polarization of the ChB
donors induced by the cobound alkali metal cation. Importantly, the
magnitude of this switch on Te-centered electrophilicity, and therefore
anion-binding affinity, is shown to correlate with the inherent Lewis
acidity of the alkali metal cation. Extensive computational DFT investigations
corroborated the experimental alkali metal cation–anion ion-pair
binding observations for halides and oxoanions.

Abstract
In this work, we report the synthesis and characterization of a mono-nuclear “two wall” aryl-extended calix[4]pyrrole receptor (2Au) decorated with an acetylide-gold(I)-PTA complex at its upper rim. We describe the 1H NMR titration experiments of 2Au and its “two wall” aryl-extended calix[4]pyrrole synthetic precursors: the non-symmetric mono-iodo-mono-ethynyl 2 and the symmetric bis-iodo 3 with TBACl in dichloromethane and acetone solution. In acetone solution, we use isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) experiments to thermodynamically characterize the formed 1:1 chloride complexes and perform pair-wise competitive binding experiments. In both solvents, we measured a decrease in the binding constant of the mono-nuclear 2Au complex for chloride compared to the parent mono-iodo-mono-ethynyl 2. In turn, receptor 2 also shows a reduction in binding affinity for chloride compared to its precursor bis-iodo calix[4]pyrrole 3. The free energy differences (∆G) of the 1:1 chloride complexes cannot be exclusively attributed to their dissimilar electrostatic surface potential values either at the center of the meso-phenyl wall or its para-substituent. We conclude that solvation/desolvation processes play an important role in the stabilization of the chloride complexes. In acetone solution and in the presence of TBACl, 6Au, a reference compound for the acetylide Au(I)•PTA unit, produces a bis(alkynyl)gold(I) anionic complex [7Au]−. Thus, the observation of two separate sets of signals for the bound aromatic calix[4]pyrrole protons, when more than 1 equiv. of the salt is added, is assigned to the formation of the chloride complexes of 2Au and of the “in situ” formed calix[4]pyrrole anionic dimer [8Au]−. Finally, preliminary data obtained in cell viability assays of 2Au and 6Au with human cancer cells lines assign them with moderate activities showing that the calix[4]pyrrole unit is not relevant.

Abstract
Ion-pair recognition has emerged from cation and anion recognition and become a diverse and active field in its own right. The last decade has seen significant advances in receptor design in terms of the types of binding motifs, understanding of cooperativity and increase in complexity from heteroditopic to multitopic receptors. As a result, attention has turned to applying this knowledge to the rational design of ion-pair receptors for applications in salt solubilisation and extraction, membrane transport and sensing. This Review highlights recent progress and developments in the design and applications of heteroditopic and multitopic receptors for ion-pair recognition.

Abstract
Calix[4]pyrrole (C4P)-based systems have been extensively explored as binding agents for anions and ion pairs. However, their capacity to act as molecular containers for neutral species remains underexplored. We report here the molecular recognition of pyrazine N,N'-dioxide (PZDO) using a series of aryl extended C4Ps including three α,α-diaryl substituted C4Ps (receptors 1-3), an α,β-diaryl substituted C4P (receptor 4) and an α,α,α,α-tetraaryl substituted C4P (receptor 5). Single crystal structural analyses of the 2 : 1 host-guest complexes between receptors 1-3 and PZDO revealed that the C4P subunits exist in an unusual partial cone conformation and that the PZDO guest is held within electron-rich cavities formed by the lower rims of the individual C4P macrocycle. In contrast, receptor 5 was seen to adopt the cone conformation in the solid state, allowing one PZDO molecule to be accommodated inside the upper-rim cavity. Evidence for guest-directed self-assembly is also seen in the solid state. Evidence for C4P-PZDO interactions in CD3CN/CD3OD solution came from 1H NMR spectroscopic titrations. Electrostatic potential maps created by means of density functional theory calculations were constructed. Density functional theory calculations were also performed to analyse the energetics of various limiting binding modes. On the basis of these studies, it is inferred that interactions between the 'two-wall' C4P derivatives (i.e. receptors 1-4) and PZDO involve a complex binding mode that differs from what has been seen in previous host-guest complexes formed between C4Ps and N-oxides. The present study thus paves the way for the further design of C4P-based receptors with novel recognition features.

Abstract
Supramolecular chemistry is a central topic in modern chemistry. It touches on many traditional disciplines, such as organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, environmental chemistry, and biological chemistry. Supramolecular hosts, inter alia macrocyclic hosts, play critical roles in supramolecular chemistry. Calix[4]pyrroles, non-aromatic tetrapyrrolic macrocycles defined by sp3 hybridized meso bridges, have proved to be versatile receptors for neutral species, anions, and cations, as well as ion pairs. Compared to the parent system, octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole and its derivatives bearing simple appended functionalities, strapped calix[4]pyrroles typically display enhanced binding affinities and selectivities. In this review, we summarize advances in the design and synthesis of strapped calix[4]pyrroles, as well as their broad utility in molecular recognition, supramolecular extraction, separation technology, ion transport, and as agents capable of inhibiting cancer cell proliferation. Future challenges within this sub-field are also discussed.

Abstract
A recyclable mercury(ii) selective dimer based on a calix[4]pyrrole derivative has been synthesised and characterised by mass and FT-IR spectrometry, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX). Information regarding the ability of the dimer to interact with metal cations was obtained from FTIR and SEM-EDX analyses. A striking feature of micrographs of the loaded dimer is the change of morphology with the cation. Based on these results, optimal conditions for removing cations from water were assessed under different experimental conditions. Results obtained demonstrate that the removal process is fast. Capacity values and selectivity factors show that the dimer is selective for Hg(ii) in single and multiple component metal solutions relative to other cations. Single-ion transfer Gibbs energies from water to a solvent containing common functionalities to those of the dimer were used to assess the counter-ion effect on the removal process. Agreement is found between these data and energy calculations derived from molecular simulation studies. Studies on polluted water in the presence of normal water components in addition to toxic metal cations are reported. Further experimental work on wastewater from the mining industry is in progress.

Abstract
Two silylene-spaced ((E)-vinylsilyl)anthracene-dipyrromethane dyads have been designed and synthesized by RhCl(PPh3 )3 -catalyzed hydrosilylation reactions of 5-methyl-5'-(ethynylaryl)dipyrromethanes with (9-Anthryl)-dimethylsilane. The complexation studies of dyads toward different anions have also been performed, which reveal that dyads exhibit a highly selective response towards fluoride anion attributable to both hydrogen-bonding and pentacoordination phenomena. This dual-mode fluoride recognition event is unprecedented and may pave the way for future developments in the areas of porphyrinoids, organosilicon, polymer, and supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract
meso-Substituted calix[4]pyrroles 2-6 containing a direct meso-ethynyl linker displayed high binding affinities and unique conformational features on halide anion binding. A general conformational bias for the equatorial alignments of the meso-(aryl)ethynyl groups was observed in the host-halide complexes which was attributed to the repulsive anion-alkyne interactions and released steric strain. Such conformational features of host-halide complexes persisted even in the case of calix[4]pyrrole 6 bearing cationic meso components, which displayed the highest binding affinity for chloride anions among known meso-aryl calix[4]pyrroles. Synthetic details, conformational features, and comparative halide anion binding properties of this series of calix[4]pyrroles are described.

Abstract
Recently, ligand-metal coordination, stimuli-responsive covalent bonds, and mechanically interlinked molecular constructs have been used to create systems with a large number of accessible structural states. However, accessing a multiplicity of states in sequence from more than one direction and doing so without the need for external energetic inputs remain as unmet challenges, as does the use of relatively weak noncovalent interactions to stabilize the underlying forms. Here we report a system based on a bispyridine-substituted calix[4]pyrrole that allows access to six different discrete states with directional control via the combined use of metal-based self-assembly and molecular recognition. Switching can be induced by the selective addition or removal of appropriately chosen ionic guests. No light or redox changes are required. The tunable nature of the system has been established through a combination of spectroscopic techniques and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The findings illustrate a new approach to creating information-rich functional materials.

Abstract
Two or more anions constrained in close proximity within a single pocket are found in a number of natural systems but a less common motif in artificial systems. This review summarizes work on anion receptors capable of stabilizing anionic dimers, trimers, tetramers and clusters in a well-defined fashion. These systems may provide insights into the fundamental chemistry of anion-anion interactions and provide a guide for understanding in greater detail a number of biological and environmental processes, as well as key tenants of relevance to supramolecular chemistry, extraction, transport, crystal engineering, and the like. The primary goal of this review is to provide a general introduction into multi-anion recognition chemistry for the benefit of supramolecular and non-supramolecular chemists alike.

Abstract
Herein we describe a large capsule-like bis-calix[4]pyrrole 1, which is able to host concurrently two dihydrogen phosphate anions within a relatively large internal cavity. Evidence for the concurrent, dual recognition of the encapsulated anions came from 1H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopies and ITC titrations carried out in CD2Cl2/CD3OD (9/1, v/v) or dichloroethane (DCE), as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Receptor 1 was also found to bind two dianionic sulfate anions bridged by two water molecules in the solid state. The resulting sulfate dimer was retained in DCE solution, as evidenced by spectroscopic analyses. Finally, receptor 1 was found capable of accommodating two trianionic pyrophosphate anions in the cavity. The present experimental findings are supported by DFT calculations along with 1H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopies, ITC studies, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

Abstract
Calix[4]pyrroles act as powerful receptors for electron-rich neutral guests and anionic guests in organic solvents. For the electron-rich neutral guest pyridine N-oxide, calix[4]pyrrole, with a deep cavity, provides an appropriate environment. The ability of calix[4]pyrrole to host binding guest molecules is the result of hydrogen bonding, π–π, C—H...π and hydrophobic interactions of the cavity. The novel title complex, C52H40D12N4O4·C5H5NO·C2H3N, based on d
12-meso-tetrakis(4-methoxyphenyl)-meso-tetramethylcalix[4]pyrrole, has been assembled using an excess of pyridine N-oxide and is the first deuterated complex of calix[4]pyrrole. A single-crystal X-ray study shows that the receptor adopts a cone conformation with the N-oxide fragment encapsulated deep within the cavity. 1H NMR spectroscopy was used to probe the molecular binding formation in CD3CN. The results are consistent with the single-crystal X-ray study in identifying that the pyridine N-oxide molecule occupies the cavity of the calix[4]pyrrole molecule. UV–vis spectroscopy revealed that the calix[4]pyrrole receptor molecules are able to form 1:1 inclusion complexes in CH3CN.

Abstract
In this work, we report our investigations on the synthesis of a [2]rotaxane based on a bis(calix[4]pyrrole) cyclic component and a 3,5-bis-amidepyridyl-N-oxide derivative axle. We isolated the [2]rotaxane in a significant 50% yield through an optimized "in situ" capping strategy using the copper(i)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction. The synthetic precursor of the [2]rotaxane, featuring [2]pseudorotaxane topology, could be quantitatively assembled in solution in the presence of one equivalent of tetrabutylammonium chloride or cyanate salts producing a four-particle aggregate. However, we observed that the addition of the salt was deleterious not only for the isolation of the [2]rotaxane in its pure form but, more important, for the optimal performance of the copper catalyst. We probed the interaction of the prepared [2]rotaxane with tetraalkylammonium salts of chloride, nitrate and cyanate anions by means of 1H NMR titrations and ITC experiments. We show that in chloroform solution the [2]rotaxane functions as an efficient heteroditopic receptor for the salts forming thermodynamically and kinetically highly stable ion-paired complexes with 1 : 1 stoichiometry. At millimolar concentration and using 1H NMR spectroscopy we observed that the addition of more than 1 equiv. of the salt induced the gradual disassembly of the 1 : 1 complex of the [2]rotaxane and the concomitant formation of higher stoichiometry aggregates i.e. 2 : 1 complexes.

Abstract
We describe our results in the attempted template syntheses of oligomacrocycle calix[4]pyrrole dimer 4, using Hay coupling reaction conditions, tetraalkynyl calix[4]pyrrole 5 as starting material and two bipyridyl N-oxides of different length as templates. We found that the short bis-N-oxide 3 was not an efficient template for the macrocyclization reaction producing an insoluble crude reaction mixture containing exclusively oligomerization and polycondensation products. On the other hand, when we used the long bis-N-oxide 6 as template we obtained a soluble crude reaction mixture in which we did not detect the expected calix[4]pyrrole dimer 4. Instead, we isolated, in low yield, an encapsulation complex of the bis-N-oxide 6 in a partially reacted calix[4]pyrrole dimer. The major isolated species was an unprecedented calix[4]pyrrole tetramer encapsulating two molecules of 6. The complex adopted a chiral helical-like conformation in the solid state resembling the previously described so-called "Siamese-Twin porphyrins".

Abstract
This is the first report of charge transfer band for crown-axel H-bonding interaction in acetonitrile medium. Monte Carlo simulation established external association of small cavity crown with BBIM-propane dication axels. Resonance energy, binding constant and ratiometric detection of association of xanthenocrown-5 (1) and bis-napthalenocrown-6 (2) with bis-(benzimidazolium)propane borontetrafluoride (3a-3d) in acetonitrile determined the effect of steric factor towards association.

Abstract
A cyclic network of chemical reactions has been conceived for exchanging the dynamic behaviour of di(acylamino)pyridine-based rotaxanes and surrogates. X-ray diffraction studies revealed the intercomponent interactions in these interlocked compounds and were consistent with those found in solution by dynamic NMR experiments. This particular binding site was incorporated into a molecular shuttle enabled for accessing two states with an outstanding positional discrimination through chemical manipulation. Furthermore, the ability of the di(acylamino)pyridine domain to associate with external binders with a complementary array of HB donor and acceptor sites was exploited for the advance of an unprecedented electrochemical switch operating through a reversible anion radical recognition process.

Abstract
A strategy for threading an axle having a hydrogen bond acceptor unit in the cavity of a C3v symmetric amido-amine macrobicycle is investigated. The macrobicycle acts as a wheel in its neutral as well as triprotonated states to form threaded architectures with a pyridine N-oxide derivative. The negative oxygen dipole of the axle is capable of [2]pseudorotaxane formation in two different orientations with the wheel in its neutral and triprotonated states.

Abstract
The aryl-ethynyl linkage has been extensively employed in the construction of hosts for a variety of guests. Uses range from ion detection (e.g., of metal cations in the environment or industrial waste and of anions prevalent in nature), to molecular mimics for biological systems, and to applications targeting future safety issues (such as CO2 capture and indicators for the manufacture of chemical weapons). This Focus Review examines the utilization of the aryl-ethynyl linkage in engineering host molecules for a variety of different guests, and how the alkyne unit plays an integral part as both a rigid scaffolding section in host geometry design as well as a linker to allow conjugative communication between discrete π-electron systems.

Abstract
Previous work on a ditopic receptor based on a tripodal phosphine oxide core demonstrated preferential enhancement of bromide binding over chloride or iodide in the presence of lithium cation. Current studies on an elongated receptor provide evidence that preferential bromide binding enhancement in the presence of lithium cation is common to this receptor class in general, and that lengthening of the receptor results in an overall increase in halide association. Furthermore, the extended receptor shows a strong preference for Li+ binding in solution.
