Kinetically Controlled Overgrowth of Ag or Au on Pd Nanocrystal Seeds: From Hybrid Dimers to Nonconcentric and Concentric Bimetallic Nanocrystals

Plasmon-Induced Hot Electrons in Nanostructured Materials: Generation, Collection, and Application to Photochemistry

Plasmon refers to the coherent oscillation of all conduction-band electrons in a nanostructure made of a metal or a heavily doped semiconductor. Upon excitation, the plasmon can decay through different channels, including nonradiative Landau damping for the generation of plasmon-induced energetic carriers, the so-called hot electrons and holes. The energetic carriers can be collected by transferring to a functional material situated next to the plasmonic component in a hybrid configuration to facilitate a range of photochemical processes for energy or chemical conversion. This article centers on the recent advancement in generating and utilizing plasmon-induced hot electrons in a rich variety of hybrid nanostructures. After a brief introduction to the fundamentals of hot-electron generation and decay in plasmonic nanocrystals, we extensively discuss how to collect the hot electrons with various types of functional materials. With a focus on plasmonic nanocrystals made of metals, we also briefly examine those based upon heavily doped semiconductors. Finally, we illustrate how site-selected growth can be leveraged for the rational fabrication of different types of hybrid nanostructures, with an emphasis on the parameters that can be experimentally controlled to tailor the properties for various applications.

Morphology Control of Au-Ni Hybrid Nanoparticles: Exploring Heterostructures and Optical Tuning

Hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted considerable attention because of their ability to provide diverse properties by integrating the inherent properties of multiple components; however, synthetic strategies to control their morphology remain unexplored. In this study, a new method was used to control the morphology and optical properties of Au-Ni heterostructure (ANH) NPs. Unique morphological changes were observed by varying the Au/Ni precursor ratio from 2:1 to 1:4, exhibiting a shape transformation from dumbbell-like to quasi-spherical owing to the Ni NP size expansion, whereas the Au NP maintained their size. Moreover, increasing the Ni ratio induced plasmonic band broadening and wavelength redshift, resulting in color changes from red to navy and black. In terms of the structure, the atomic orientation of the crystallite showed that even a large lattice mismatch can result in heterojunctions at the NPs. In addition, the reaction aliquots uncovered heterogeneous nucleation and growth of ANH NPs in the colloidal system, demonstrating Ni reduction on the preformed Au NP owing to the reduction in potential gap. This study provides new insights into controlling the morphology of hybrid NPs using colloidal synthesis and the design of optimized materials for various applications.

Nanocrystal Assemblies: Current Advances and Open Problems

We explore the potential of nanocrystals (a term used equivalently to nanoparticles) as building blocks for nanomaterials, and the current advances and open challenges for fundamental science developments and applications. Nanocrystal assemblies are inherently multiscale, and the generation of revolutionary material properties requires a precise understanding of the relationship between structure and function, the former being determined by classical effects and the latter often by quantum effects. With an emphasis on theory and computation, we discuss challenges that hamper current assembly strategies and to what extent nanocrystal assemblies represent thermodynamic equilibrium or kinetically trapped metastable states. We also examine dynamic effects and optimization of assembly protocols. Finally, we discuss promising material functions and examples of their realization with nanocrystal assemblies.

Nano-Bricks Assembly Toward 1D Metal Oxide Nanorods

The rational design of hybrid nanocrystals structures facilitates electronic and energetic communication between different component, which can optimize their specific performance. In this study, an efficient approach for building intricate ZnO@h-CoO nanocomposites and their derivatives is presented, based on a lattice-match/mismatch mechanism. Due to the ultra-low lattice mismatch between ZnO and hexagonal CoO (as low as 0.18%), the h-CoO layer enables epitaxial growth on the ZnO templates, and ZnO can also grow epitaxially outside the CoO layer with ease. Similarly, the thickness of the epitaxial layer and the number of alternating layers can be adjusted arbitrarily. In contrast to h-CoO, the growth of cubic crystalline oxides (such as MnO) on ZnO results in the formation of nanoparticles due to a large mismatch index (following the Volmer-Weber models). Interestingly, when h-CoO is introduced as a further component into the MnO/ZnO composite, the cubic crystalline particles on the surface of the ZnO do not disturb the epitaxial growth of the h-CoO, allowing for the formation of nanocomposites with more components. Furthermore, additional units can be added to the nanocomposite further based on the lattice-match/mismatch mechanism, which is analogous to the building nano-bricks.

Steering the Selective Production of Glycolic Acid by Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Ethylene Glycol with Nanoengineered PdBi-Based Heterodimers

Heterodimers of metal nanocrystals (NCs) with tailored elemental distribution have emerged as promising candidates in the field of electrocatalysis, owing to their unique structures featuring heterogeneous interfaces with distinct components. Despite this, the rational synthesis of heterodimer NCs with similar elemental composition remains a formidable challenge, and their impact on electrocatalysis has remained largely elusive. In this study, Pd@Bi-PdBi heterodimer NCs are synthesized through an underpotential deposition (UPD)-directed growth pathway. In this pathway, the UPD of Bi promotes a Volmer-Weber growth mode, allowing for judicious modulation of core-satellite to heterodimer structures through careful control of supersaturation and growth kinetics. Significantly, the heterodimer NCs are employed in the electrocatalytic process of ethylene glycol (EG) with high activity and selectivity. Compared with pristine Pd octahedra and common PdBi alloy NC, the unique heterodimer structure of the Pd@Bi-PdBi heterodimer NCs endows them with the highest electrocatalytic performance of EG and the best selectivity (≈93%) in oxidizing EG to glycolic acid (GA). Taken together, this work not only heralds a new strategy for UPD-directed synthesis of bimetallic NCs, but also provides a new design paradigm for steering the selectivity of electrocatalysts.

Site-specific growth of gold nanoparticles on Bismuth Selenide hexagonal nanoplates

Highly site-specific growth of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on Bismuth Selenide (Bi₂Se₃) hexagonal nanoplates was achieved by fine-tuning the growth kinetics of Au through controlling the coordination number of the Au ion in MBIA-Au³⁺ complex. With increasing concentration of MBIA, the increased amount and the coordination number of the MBIA-Au³⁺ complex results in the decrease of the reduction rate of Au. The slowed growth kinetics of Au allowed the recognition of the sites with different surface energy on the anisotropic Bi₂Se₃ hexagonal nanoplates. As a result, the site-specific growth of AuNPs at the corner, the edge, and the surface of the Bi₂Se₃ nanoplates were successfully achieved. This way of growth kinetic control was proven to be effective in constructing well-defined heterostructures with precise site-specificity and high purity of the product. This is helpful for the rational design and controlled synthesis of sophisticated hybrid nanostructures and would eventually promote their applications in various fields.

Silver Nanocubes: From Serendipity to Mechanistic Understanding, Rational Synthesis, and Niche Applications

Silver has long been interwoven into human history, and its uses have evolved from currency and jewelry to medicine, information technology, catalysis, and electronics. Within the last century, the development of nanomaterials has further solidified the importance of this element. Despite this long history, there was essentially no mechanistic understanding or experimental control of silver nanocrystal synthesis until about two decades ago. Here we aim to provide an account of the history and development of the colloidal synthesis of silver nanocubes, as well as some of their major applications. We begin with a description of the first accidental synthesis of silver nanocubes that spurred subsequent investigations into each of the individual components of the protocol, revealing piece by piece parts of the mechanistic puzzle. This is followed by a discussion of the various obstacles inherent to the original method alongside mechanistic details developed to optimize the synthetic protocol. Finally, we discuss a range of applications enabled by the plasmonic and catalytic properties of silver nanocubes, including localized surface plasmon resonance, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, metamaterials, and ethylene epoxidation, as well as further derivatization and development of size, shape, composition, and related properties.

Photothermal Nanomaterials: A Powerful Light-to-Heat Converter

All forms of energy follow the law of conservation of energy, by which they can be neither created nor destroyed. Light-to-heat conversion as a traditional yet constantly evolving means of converting light into thermal energy has been of enduring appeal to researchers and the public. With the continuous development of advanced nanotechnologies, a variety of photothermal nanomaterials have been endowed with excellent light harvesting and photothermal conversion capabilities for exploring fascinating and prospective applications. Herein we review the latest progresses on photothermal nanomaterials, with a focus on their underlying mechanisms as powerful light-to-heat converters. We present an extensive catalogue of nanostructured photothermal materials, including metallic/semiconductor structures, carbon materials, organic polymers, and two-dimensional materials. The proper material selection and rational structural design for improving the photothermal performance are then discussed. We also provide a representative overview of the latest techniques for probing photothermally generated heat at the nanoscale. We finally review the recent significant developments of photothermal applications and give a brief outlook on the current challenges and future directions of photothermal nanomaterials.

Kinetically and thermodynamically controlled one-pot growth of gold nanoshells with NIR-II absorption for multimodal imaging-guided photothermal therapy

Since the successful clinical trial of AuroShell for photothermal therapy, there is currently intense interest in developing gold-based core-shell structures with near-infrared (NIR) absorption ranging from NIR-I (650-900 nm) to NIR-II (900-1700 nm). Here, we propose a seed-mediated successive growth approach to produce gold nanoshells on the surface of the nanoscale metal-organic framework (NMOF) of UiO-66-NH₂ (UiO = the University of Oslo) in one pot. The key to this strategy is to modulate the proportion of the formaldehyde (reductant) and its regulator / oxidative product of formic acid to harness the particle nucleation and growth rate within the same system. The gold nanoshells propagate through a well-oriented and controllable diffusion growth pattern (points → facets → octahedron), which has not been identified. Most strikingly, the gold nanoshells prepared hereby exhibit an exceedingly broad and strong absorption in NIR-II with a peak beyond 1300 nm and outstanding photothermal conversion efficiency of 74.0%. Owing to such superior performance, these gold nanoshells show promising outcomes in photoacoustic (PA), computed tomography (CT), and photothermal imaging-guided photothermal therapy (PTT) for breast cancer, as demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo.

Ion Beam Milling as a Symmetry-Breaking Control in the Synthesis of Periodic Arrays of Identically Aligned Bimetallic Janus Nanocrystals

Bimetallic Janus nanostructures represent a highly functional class of nanomaterials due to important physicochemical properties stemming from the union of two chemically distinct metal segments where each maintains a partially exposed surface. Essential to their synthesis is the incorporation of a symmetry-breaking control that is able to induce the regioselective deposition of a secondary metal onto a preexisting nanostructure even though such depositions are, more often than not, in opposition to the innate tendencies of heterogeneous growth modes. Numerous symmetry-breaking controls have been forwarded but the ensuing Janus structure syntheses have not yet achieved anywhere near the same level of control over nanostructure size, shape, and composition as their core-shell and single-element counterparts. Herein, a collimated ion beam is demonstrated as a symmetry-breaking control that allows for the selective removal of a passivating oxide shell from one side of a metal nanostructure to create a configuration that is transformable into a substrate-bound Au-Ag Janus nanostructure. Two different modalities are demonstrated for achieving Janus structures where in one case the oxide dissolves in the growth solution while in the other it remains affixed to form a three-component system. The devised procedures distinguish themselves in their ability to realize complex Janus architectures arranged in periodic arrays where each structure has the same alignment relative to the underlying substrate. The work, hence, provides an avenue for forming precisely tailored Janus structures and, in a broader sense, advances the use of oxides as an effective means for directing nanometal syntheses.

First principles insights into the relative stability, electronic and catalytic properties of core-shell, Janus and mixed structural patterns for bimetallic Pd-X nano-alloys (X = Co, Ni, Cu, Rh, Ag, Ir, Pt, Au)

The three well-known orderings of the two constituting atomic species in a bimetallic nano-alloy - core-shell, Janus and mixed structural patterns - may be interconvertible depending on the synthesis conditions. Using first principles electronic structure calculations in the present work, we look for the microscopic origin for such structural transformation considering eight Pd-related bimetallic nano-alloys. Our analysis shows that it is the change in atom-atom covalency that is responsible for such structural transformation. Our study also reveals that the three patterns are distinctly identified in terms of total orbital hybridization. Finally, we have analyzed the trend in the relative catalytic activity for the three structures of each bimetallic nano-alloy using the d-band model. Our analysis indicates that the trend in the catalytic activity for the bimetallic Pd-X nano-alloys seems to be intermediate to those of the pristine Pd and Pt nano-clusters possessing similar structure and equal number of total atoms. Among the studied binary nano-alloys, the bimetallic Pd-Ni nano-alloy appears as the most suitable binary pair to develop a non-Pt catalyst.

Magnetic/Plasmonic Hybrid Nanodisks with Dynamically Tunable Mechano-Chiroptical Responses

Chiral plasmonic nanostructures have promising applications in optoelectronics due to their chiroptical responses. However, achieving active tuning of optical chirality remains challenging. Here, we develop stretchable chiroptical films with mechanically tunable extrinsic chirality by assembling hexagonal magnetic/plasmonic hybrid nanodisks in magnetic fields. The nanodisks, synthesized using a space-confined growth method, display three distinct plasmonic resonance modes at the UV-vis-NIR region, which red shift with increasing size as demonstrated by simulation and experimental results. The coupled magnetic and plasmonic anisotropy allows convenient control over the plasmonic resonance modes by altering the strength or direction of external magnetic fields. Further, magnetically aligning the nanodisks in a stretchable polymer film produces superstructures with extrinsic chirality, displaying selective absorption of circularly polarized light and inverted circular dichroism due to the linear dichroism-linear birefringence effect. Reversible mechanical stretching allows for continuous switching of circular dichroism in a wide range (from -1° to +1°). The efficient magnetic alignment of hybrid nanodisks in the hydrogel provides a simple and effective strategy for designing stretchable optical devices with tunable extrinsic chirality.

Colloidal Synthesis of Metal Nanocrystals: From Asymmetrical Growth to Symmetry Breaking

Nanocrystals offer a unique platform for tailoring the physicochemical properties of solid materials to enhance their performances in various applications. While most work on controlling their shapes revolves around symmetrical growth, the introduction of asymmetrical growth and thus symmetry breaking has also emerged as a powerful route to enrich metal nanocrystals with new shapes and complex morphologies as well as unprecedented properties and functionalities. The success of this route critically relies on our ability to lift the confinement on symmetry by the underlying unit cell of the crystal structure and/or the initial seed in a systematic manner. This Review aims to provide an account of recent progress in understanding and controlling asymmetrical growth and symmetry breaking in a colloidal synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals. With a touch on both the nucleation and growth steps, we discuss a number of methods capable of generating seeds with diverse symmetry while achieving asymmetrical growth for mono-, bi-, and multimetallic systems. We then showcase a variety of symmetry-broken nanocrystals that have been reported, together with insights into their growth mechanisms. We also highlight their properties and applications and conclude with perspectives on future directions in developing this class of nanomaterials. It is hoped that the concepts and existing challenges outlined in this Review will drive further research into understanding and controlling the symmetry breaking process.

Seeded Growth of Gold-Copper Janus Nanostructures as a Tandem Catalyst for Efficient Electroreduction of CO2 to C2+ Products

Gold-copper (Au-Cu) Janus nanostructures (Au-Cu Janus NSs) are successfully prepared using N-oleyl-1,3-propanediamine as capping agent and Cu(acac)₂ as the precursor in a typical seeded growth strategy. By preferably depositing Cu atoms on one side of concave cubic Au seeds, the Cu part gradually grows larger as more Cu precursors are added, making the size tuning feasible in the range of 74-156 nm. When employed as an electrocatalyst for electrochemical CO₂ reduction (CO₂ RR), the Au-Cu Janus NSs display superior performance to Au@Cu core-shell NSs and Cu NPs in terms of C₂₊ products selectivity (67%) and C₂₊ partial current density (-0.29 A cm^-2 ). Combined experimental verification and theoretical simulations reveal that CO spillover from Au sites to the nearby Cu counterparts would enhance CO coverage and thus promote C-C coupling, highlighting the unique structural advantages of the Au-Cu Janus NSs toward deep reduction of CO₂ . The current work provides a facile strategy to fabricate tandem catalyst with a Janus structure and validates its structural advantages toward CO₂ RR, which are of critical importance for the rational design of efficient CO₂ RR catalyst.

Regioselective Deposition of Metals on Seeds within a Polymer Matrix

We use scanning probe block copolymer lithography in a two-step sequential manner to explore the deposition of secondary metals on nanoparticle seeds. When single element nanoparticles (Au, Ag, Cu, Co, or Ni) were used as seeds, both heterogeneous and homogeneous growth occurred, as rationalized using the thermodynamic concepts of bond strength and lattice mismatch. Specifically, heterogeneous growth occurs when the heterobond strength between the seed and growth atoms is stronger than the homobond strength between the growth atoms. Moreover, the resulting nanoparticle structure depends on the degree of lattice mismatch between the seed and growth metals. Specifically, a large lattice mismatch (e.g., 13.82% for Au and Ni) typically resulted in heterodimers, whereas a small lattice mismatch (e.g., 0.19% for Au and Ag) resulted in core-shell structures. Interestingly, when heterodimer nanoparticles were used as seeds, the secondary metals deposited asymmetrically on one side of the seed. By programming the deposition conditions of Ag and Cu on AuNi heterodimer seeds, two distinct nanostructures were synthesized with (1) Ag and Cu on the Au domain and (2) Ag on the Au domain and Cu on the Ni domain, illustrating how this technique can be used to predictively synthesize structurally complex, multimetallic nanostructures.

Bimetallic Janus Nanocrystals: Syntheses and Applications

Bimetallic Janus nanocrystals have received considerable interest in recent years owing to their unique properties and niche applications. The side-by-side distribution of two distinct metals provides a flexible platform for tailoring the optical and catalytic properties of nanocrystals. First, a brief introduction to the structural features of bimetallic Janus nanocrystals, followed by an extensive discussion of the synthetic approaches, is given. The strategies and experimental controls for achieving the Janus structure, as well as the mechanistic understandings, are specifically discussed. Then, a number of intriguing properties and applications enabled by the Janus nanocrystals are highlighted. Finally, this article is concluded with future directions and outlooks with respect to both syntheses and applications of this new class of functional nanomaterials.

Noble Metal-Based Multimetallic Nanoparticles for Electrocatalytic Applications

Noble metal-based multimetallic nanoparticles (NMMNs) have attracted great attention for their multifunctional and synergistic effects, which offer numerous catalytic applications. Combined experimental and theoretical studies have enabled formulation of various design principles for tuning the electrocatalytic performance through controlling size, composition, morphology, and crystal structure of the nanoparticles. Despite significant advancements in the field, the chemical synthesis of NMMNs with ideal characteristics for catalysis, including high activity, stability, product-selectivity, and scalability is still challenging. This review provides an overview on structure-based classification and the general synthesis of NMMN electrocatalysts. Furthermore, postsynthetic treatments, such as the removal of surfactants to optimize the activity, and utilization of NMMNs onto suitable support for practical electrocatalytic applications are highlighted. In the end, future direction and challenges associated with the electrocatalysis of NMMNs are covered.

Shape-Dependent Catalytic Activity of Gold and Bimetallic Nanoparticles in the Reduction of Methylene Blue by Sodium Borohydride

In this study the catalytic activity of different gold and bimetallic nanoparticle solutions towards the reduction of methylene blue by sodium borohydride as a model reaction is investigated. By utilizing differently shaped gold nanoparticles, i.e., spheres, cubes, prisms and rods as well as bimetallic gold–palladium and gold–platinum core-shell nanorods, we evaluate the effect of the catalyst surface area as available gold surface area, the shape of the nanoparticles and the impact of added secondary metals in case of bimetallic nanorods. We track the reaction by UV/Vis measurements in the range of 190–850 nm every 60 s. It is assumed that the gold nanoparticles do not only act as a unit transferring electrons from sodium borohydride towards methylene blue but can promote the electron transfer upon plasmonic excitation. By testing different particle shapes, we could indeed demonstrate an effect of the particle shape by excluding the impact of surface area and/or surface ligands. All nanoparticle solutions showed a higher methylene blue turnover than their reference, whereby gold nanoprisms exhibited 100% turnover as no further methylene blue absorption peak was detected. The reaction rate constant k was also determined and revealed overall quicker reactions when gold or bimetallic nanoparticles were added as a catalyst, and again these were highest for nanoprisms. Furthermore, when comparing gold and bimetallic nanorods, it could be shown that through the addition of the catalytically active second metal platinum or palladium, the dye turnover was accelerated and degradation rate constants were higher compared to those of pure gold nanorods. The results explore the catalytic activity of nanoparticles, and assist in exploring further catalytic applications.

Three-in-One Strategy to Improve Both Catalytic Activity and Selectivity: Nonconcentric Pd-Au Nanoparticles

In direct H₂O₂ synthesis, the Pd-Au alloy was considered as a potential catalyst because of its much better performance compared to the prototype Pd; unfortunately, achieving both high activity and selectivity remains a challenge. Here, we synthesized nonconcentric Pd-Au NPs in which Au domain shells are formed only partially on Pd domain cores and tested them for direct H₂O₂ synthesis. It has three exposed regions of Pd, Au domains, and Pd-Au interfaces in a single NP (hence, a 3-in-1 strategy). Creating nonconcentric forms was demonstrated convincingly by density functional theory calculations. The nonconcentric Pd-Au particles exhibit high and well-balanced performances that are hard to achieve with traditional alloyed Pd-Au. The number of Pd/Au interfaces was found to be the key factor and thus was optimized by controlling the Au precursor concentrations. The hitherto underutilized structure of nonconcentric bimetallic alloys can be useful and thus should be more actively investigated for catalyst development.

Construction of Lattice Strain in Bimetallic Nanostructures and Its Effectiveness in Electrochemical Applications

Bimetallic nanocrystals (NCs), associated with various surface functions such as ligand effect, ensemble effect, and strain effect, exhibit superior electrocatalytic properties. The stress-induced surface strain effect can alter binding strength between the surface active sites and reactants as well as their intermediates, and the electrochemical performance of bimetallic NCs can be significantly facilitated by the lattice-strain modification via their morphologies, sizes, shell-thickness, surface defectiveness as well as compositions. In this review, an overview of fundamental principles, characterization techniques, and quantitative determination of the surface lattice strain is provided. Various strategies and synthesis efforts on creating lattice-strain-engineered bimetallic NCs, including the de-alloying process, atomic layer-by-layer deposition, thermal treatment evolution, one-pot synthesis, and other efforts are also discussed. It is further outlined how the lattice strain effect promotes electrochemical catalysis through the selected case studies. The reactions on oxygen reduction reaction, small molecular oxidation, water splitting reaction, and electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reactions are focused. In particular, studies of lattice strain arisen from core-shell nanostructure and defectiveness are highlighted. Lastly, the potential challenges are summarized and the prospects of lattice-strain-based engineering on bimetallic nanocatalysts with suggestion and guidance of the future electrocatalyst design are envisioned.

Antibacterial Biodegradable Films Based on Alginate with Silver Nanoparticles and Lemongrass Essential Oil-Innovative Packaging for Cheese

Replacing the petroleum-based materials in the food industry is one of the main objectives of the scientists and decision makers worldwide. Biodegradable packaging will help diminish the environmental impact of human activity. Improving such biodegradable packaging materials by adding antimicrobial activity will not only extend the shelf life of foodstuff, but will also eliminate some health hazards associated with food borne diseases, and by diminishing the food spoilage will decrease the food waste. The objective of this research was to obtain innovative antibacterial films based on a biodegradable polymer, namely alginate. Films were characterized by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and microscopy, complex thermal analysis (TG-DSC-FTIR), UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Water vapor permeability and swelling behavior were also determined. As antimicrobial agents, we used silver spherical nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and lemongrass essential oil (LGO), which were found to act in a synergic way. The obtained films exhibited strong antibacterial activity against tested strains, two Gram-positive (Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus) and two Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Salmonella Typhi). Best results were obtained against Bacillus cereus. The tests indicate that the antimicrobial films can be used as packaging, preserving the color, surface texture, and softness of cheese for 14 days. At the same time, the color of the films changed (darkened) as a function of temperature and light presence, a feature that can be used to monitor the storage conditions for sensitive food.

Symmetry-Broken Patches on Gold Nanoparticles through Deficient Ligand Exchange

Symmetry-broken nanoparticles (NPs) are important building blocks with directional interparticle interaction as a key to access the precise organization of NPs macroscopically. We report a facile, one-pot synthetic approach to prepare high-quality symmetry-broken plasmonic gold NPs (AuNPs). Symmetry-broken patterning is achieved through deficient ligand exchange of isotropic AuNPs with thiol-terminated polystyrene (PS-SH) in the presence of an amphiphilic polymer surfactant. The concentration of PS-SH plays a dominant role in tuning surface patterning and coverage of AuNPs. The formation of asymmetric surface patches arises from the interplay between the conformational entropy of polymer ligands and the interfacial energy between polymer-grafted AuNPs and the solvent. Our method illustrates new paradises to design asymmetric NPs with directional interparticle interactions to access the precise organization of NPs.

Janus bimetallic nanorod clusters-poly(aniline) nanocomposites with temperature-responsiveness for Raman scattering-based biosensing

Herein, Janus bimetallic nanorod clusters-poly(aniline) nanocomposites (JRCPCs) with gold nanorod clusters (GNRCs) in side-by-side (SBS) or end-to-end (ETE) configuration are synthesized, and applied to surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based biosensing of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Taking advantage of their geometrical and chemical anisotropy, GNRCs in both SBS and ETE configurations are prepared by addition of negatively charged citrate anions and poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PAAc-b-PNIPAM), respectively, to electrostatically interact with cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide surfactant on the side of the gold nanorods (GNRs). Subsequently, the JRCPCs are prepared by unidirectional growth of polyaniline and additional growth of Ag onto these GNRCs. JRCPCs with GNRCs in either the SBS or the ETE configuration show strong enhancement of electromagnetic field at both GNR aggregates and GNRC core-Ag shell gaps of bimetallic nanorod cluster components. In particular, because temperature-responsive PAAc-b-PNIPAM of JRCPCs is embedded at GNR junctions, interparticle gaps generated in GNRCs in ETE configuration are controlled via temperature-triggered hydration-dehydration of the PAAc-b-PNIPAM chains such that optical properties are largely changed. With distinct surface functionalities from JRCPCs, SERS-based quantitative analysis of CEA is achieved using JRCPCs as SERS nanoprobes. This work presents the great potential of advanced Janus nanocomposites for SERS-based biosensing applications.

Directional self-assembly of anisotropic bimetal-poly(aniline) nanostructures for rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis in multiplexing

Anisotropic organic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles possessing different functionalities and physicochemical properties from each compartment have attracted significant interest for the development of advanced functional materials. Moreover, their self-assembled structures exhibit unique optical properties for photonics-based biosensing. We report herein the fabrication of anisotropic bimetal-polymer nanoparticles (ABPNs) via combination of oxidative polymerization and additional growth of metallic nanoparticles on Au seeds as well as their directional clustering mediated via noncovalent interactions. Polymerization of anilines for poly (aniline) shell was conducted by reducing silver nitrate onto the Au seed in the presence of a surfactant, giving rise to spatially distinct bimetallic Au core and Ag shell compartment and the poly (aniline) counter-one that comprise the ABPNs. Furthermore, ABPNs were directionally clustered in a controlled manner via hydrophobic interaction, when the bimetallic compartment was selectively modified. These nanoclusters showed highly enhanced optical properties owing to the increased electromagnetic fields while the poly (aniline) being used to offer antibody binding capacity. Taking advantages of those properties of the ABPN nanoclusters, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) intensity-based quantification of two different biomarkers: autoantibodies against cyclic citrullinated peptide and rheumatoid factor was demonstrated using ABPN nanoclusters as SERS nanoprobes. Conclusively, this work has great potential to satisfy a need for multiplexing in diagnosis of early stage of rheumatoid arthritis.

Time Optimization of Seed-Mediated Gold Nanotriangle Synthesis Based on Kinetic Studies

The synthesis of shape-anisotropic plasmonic nanoparticles such as gold nanotriangles is of increasing interest. These particles have a high potential for applications due to their notable optical properties. A key challenge of the synthesis is usually the low reproducibility. Even the optimized seed-based methods often lack in the synthesis yield or are labor- and time-consuming. In this work, a seed-mediated synthesis with high reproducibility is replicated in order to determine the necessary reaction time for each step. Online monitoring of the reaction mixtures by UV–VIS spectroscopy is used as a powerful tool to track the evolution of the synthesis. The kinetics of the individual stages is elucidated by real-time investigations. As a consequence, the complete synthesis could be optimized and can now be realized in a single day instead of three without any loss in the resulting sample quality.

A review of the role and mechanism of surfactants in the morphology control of metal nanoparticles

Although great progress has been made in the synthesis of metal nanoparticles, good repeatability and accurate predictability are still difficult to achieve. This difficulty can be attributed to the synthetic method based primarily on observation and subjective experience, and the role of many surfactants remains unclear. It should be noted that surfactants play an important role in the synthetic process. Understanding their function and mechanism in the synthetic process is a prerequisite for the rational design of nanocatalysts with ideal morphology and performance. In this review article, the function of surfactants is introduced first, and then the mechanism of action of surfactants in controlling the morphology of nanoparticles is discussed according to the types of surfactants, and the promoting and sealing effects of surfactants on the crystal surface is revealed. The relationship between surfactants and the morphology structure of nanoparticles is studied. The removal methods of surfactants are discussed, and the existing problems in the current development strategy are summarized. Finally, the application of surfactants in controlling the morphology of metal nanocrystals is prospected. It is hoped that the review can open up new avenues for the synthesis of nanocrystals.

Using Reduction Kinetics to Control and Predict the Outcome of a Colloidal Synthesis of Noble-Metal Nanocrystals

Improving the performance of noble-metal nanocrystals in various applications critically depends on our ability to manipulate their synthesis in a rational, robust, and controllable fashion. Different from a conventional trial-and-error approach, the reduction kinetics of a colloidal synthesis has recently been demonstrated as a reliable knob for controlling the synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals in a deterministic and predictable manner. Here we present a brief Viewpoint on the recent progress in leveraging reduction kinetics for controlling and predicting the outcome of a synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals. With a focus on Pd nanocrystals, we first offer a discussion on the correlation between the initial reduction rate and the internal structure of the resultant seeds. The kinetic approaches for controlling both nucleation and growth in a one-pot setting are then introduced with an emphasis on manipulation of the reduction pathways taken by the precursor. We then illustrate how to extend the strategy into a bimetallic system for the preparation of nanocrystals with different shapes and elemental distributions. Finally, the influence of speciation of the precursor on reduction kinetics is highlighted, followed by our perspectives on the challenges and future endeavors in achieving a controllable and predictable synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals.

Designing caps for colloidal Au nanoparticles

The plasmonic property of a nanostructure is highly dependent on its morphology, but there are few methods for appending a domain as the "functional group" or modifier. As a means of modulating plasmonic properties, we create and modulate Au hats on Au nanoparticles, including mortarboards, beret hats, helmets, crowns, antler hats and antenna hats. The structural control arises from the active surface growth as a result of dynamic competition between ligand absorption and metal deposition. It allows the continuous tuning of hat morphologies, from the facet-controlled growth of mortarboards, to the spreading-favored growth of beret hats and helmets, and to the vertical growth of pillars in crowns, antler hats and antenna hats. Among these plasmonic nanostructures, the mortarboards show excellent SERS enhancement of 8.1 × 105, which is among the best in colloidal nanostructures; and the antler hats show the photothermal conversion efficiency of 66.2%, which compares favorably with the literature reports.

Construction of AuPdPt spherical nanodendrites with a multilayered structure by manipulating etching and regrowth in seeded growth

Size-tunable gold–palladium–platinum nanodendrites with a multilayered structure are successfully prepared via etching–regrowth-involved seeded growth, exhibiting superb electrochemical activity for formic acid oxidation.

Kinetically Manipulating the Nucleus Attachment to Create Atypical Defective Rh-Pt Alloyed Nanostructures as Active Electrocatalysts

Defective metal nanostructures have attracted great attention due to the striking catalytic behavior of the defect sites. Atypical metal nanocrystals generated from attached nuclei can accommodate abundant grain boundaries (GBs) and twin boundaries (TBs). However, the understanding of their growth-mechanism and precisely synthetic control over such defective nanocrystals are still scarce. Herein, using the Rh-Pt nanoalloy as a model system, we systematically demonstrate that a prudent control of the reaction kinetics can manipulate the metal nucleation and nucleus attachment to create atypical nanocrystals, including small isolated nanoparticles (NPs), defect-rich wavy nanowires (WNWs), and {100} facet-bounded spliced nanocubes (SNCs). In the ethanol oxidation electrocatalysis, the Rh₄₇ Pt₅₃ WNWs featured with abundant TBs and GBs show the greatest mass activity (0.655 A ⋅ mg^-1 _Pt , 2.9 times to the commercial Pt/C) and durability. Our work captures the core of reaction kinetics on regulating the nucleus attachment and enables the rational control over the nanocrystal morphology and defect.

Centrifugal microfluidic device for the high-throughput synthesis of Pd@AuPt core-shell nanoparticles to evaluate the performance of hydrogen peroxide generation

We propose a novel high-throughput screening platform using a centrifugal microfluidic device for producing combinatorial tri-metallic catalysts. The centrifugal device was designed to perform 60 reactions under different conditions on a single device. As a model to search for an optimal tri-metallic catalyst, we synthesized a variety of Pd@AuPt nanoparticles (NPs), in which Pd nanocubes served as a core, and Au and Pt atoms formed a shell. The centrifugal microfluidic device was etched on the top and bottom sides, in which two zigzag-shaped microchannels were patterned on the top side, and 60 reaction chambers were fabricated on the bottom side. Through the sophisticated zigzag-shaped microchannels, Pt²⁺ ion and Pd nanocube solutions were injected into the channel in one shot, and the centrifugal force equally and automatically divided the injected solutions into 60 aliquots during the rotation. By controlling the sophisticated channel dimensions and designing the passive valve structure, the Pt²⁺ ion, Pd nanocube, and Au³⁺ solutions were loaded into the reaction chamber in sequential order depending on the programmed rotational direction and speed. Therefore, the ratio of Au to Pt to synthesize Pd@AuPt core-shell NPs was changed from 0.028 : 1 to 12 : 1, and accordingly, the resultant 60 types of Pd@AuPt catalysts presented with different ratios of metal atom compositions. Then, we screened the catalytic activity of the Pd@AuPt NPs for generating H₂O₂ according to the degree of coating of Au and Pt, and the Pd@AuPt catalyst with the Au/Pt ratio at 0.5 turned out to be the most effective.

Plasmonic Metallic Heteromeric Nanostructures

Binary, ternary, and other high-order plasmonic heteromers possess remarkable physical and chemical properties, enabling them to be used in numerous applications. The seed-mediated approach is one of the most promising and versatile routes to produce plasmonic heteromers. Selective growth of one or multiple domains on desired sites of noble metal, semiconductor, or magnetic seeds would form desired heteromeric nanostructures with multiple functionalities and synergistic effects. In this work, the challenges for the synthetic approaches are discussed with respect to tuning the thermodynamics, as well as the kinetic properties (e.g., pH, temperature, injection rate, among others). Then, plasmonic heteromers with their structure advantages displaying unique activities compared to other hybrid nanostructures (e.g., core-shell, alloy) are highlighted. Some of the main most recent applications of plasmonic heteromers are also presented. Finally, perspectives for further exploitation of plasmonic heteromers are demonstrated. The goal of this work is to provide the current know-how on the synthesis routes of plasmonic heteromers in a summarized manner, so as to achieve a better understanding of the resulting properties and to gain an improved control of their performances and extend their breadth of applications.

Self-Limiting Shell Formation in Cu@Ag Core-Shell Nanocrystals during Galvanic Replacement

The understanding of synthetic pathways of bimetallic nanocrystals remains limited due to the complex energy landscapes and dynamics involved. In this work, we investigate the formation of self-limiting Cu@Ag core-shell nanoparticles starting from Cu nanocrystals followed by galvanic replacement with Ag ions. Bulk quantification with atomic emission spectroscopy and spatially resolved elemental mapping with electron microscopy reveal distinct nucleation regimes that produce nanoparticles with a tunable Ag shell thickness, but only up to a certain limiting thickness. We develop a quantitative transport model that explains this observed self-limiting structure as arising from the balance between entropy-driven interdiffusion and a positive mixing enthalpy. The proposed model depends only on the intrinsic physical properties of the system such as diffusivity and mixing energy and directly yields a high level of agreement with the elemental mapping profiles without requiring additional fit parameters.

Injection time controls the final morphology of nanocrystals during in situ-seeding synthesis of silver nanodisks

We investigate an in situ-seeding synthesis of silver nanodisks based on the sequential addition of weak and strong reducing agents, ascorbic acid and sodium borohydride respectively, to silver nitrate at room temperature and in the presence of PVP.

Multicomponent Plasmonic Nanoparticles: From Heterostructured Nanoparticles to Colloidal Composite Nanostructures

Plasmonic nanostructures possessing unique and versatile optoelectronic properties have been vastly investigated over the past decade. However, the full potential of plasmonic nanostructure has not yet been fully exploited, particularly with single-component homogeneous structures with monotonic properties, and the addition of new components for making multicomponent nanoparticles may lead to new-yet-unexpected or improved properties. Here we define the term "multi-component nanoparticles" as hybrid structures composed of two or more condensed nanoscale domains with distinctive material compositions, shapes, or sizes. We reviewed and discussed the designing principles and synthetic strategies to efficiently combine multiple components to form hybrid nanoparticles with a new or improved plasmonic functionality. In particular, it has been quite challenging to precisely synthesize widely diverse multicomponent plasmonic structures, limiting realization of the full potential of plasmonic heterostructures. To address this challenge, several synthetic approaches have been reported to form a variety of different multicomponent plasmonic nanoparticles, mainly based on heterogeneous nucleation, atomic replacements, adsorption on supports, and biomolecule-mediated assemblies. In addition, the unique and synergistic features of multicomponent plasmonic nanoparticles, such as combination of pristine material properties, finely tuned plasmon resonance and coupling, enhanced light-matter interactions, geometry-induced polarization, and plasmon-induced energy and charge transfer across the heterointerface, were reported. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the latest advances on state-of-art synthetic strategies, unique properties, and promising applications of multicomponent plasmonic nanoparticles. These plasmonic nanoparticles including heterostructured nanoparticles and composite nanostructures are prepared by direct synthesis and physical force- or biomolecule-mediated assembly, which hold tremendous potential for plasmon-mediated energy transfer, magnetic plasmonics, metamolecules, and nanobiotechnology.

General Approach to the Synthesis of Heterodimers of Metal Nanoparticles through Site-Selected Protection and Growth

Heterodimers of metal nanoparticles are widely sought for applications in photonics, sensing, and catalysis. In this work, we demonstrate a general approach to the fabrication of heterodimers of metal nanoparticles by leveraging the concept of site-selected growth under the protection of an inert material. When styrene is polymerized in the presence of Au nanoparticles, the resultant polystyrene (PS) can be controlled to grow from only one portion of the surface of a nanoparticle. Free of PS, the remaining portion can serve as an active site for the heterogeneous nucleation and growth of the second metal. After dissolving the PS component, we obtain heterodimers of metal nanoparticles with tunable elemental compositions and controllable physical dimensions. The contact area between the two metals can also be maneuvered by adjusting the concentration of divinylbenzene used for copolymerization with styrene. Using this method, we have prepared Au-Ag, Au-Pd, and Au-Pt heterodimers and further investigated their plasmonic properties. The capability of this approach should be extendible to the fabrication of heterodimers with a broader range of compositions and properties.

Fabrication of Metal Nanostructures on DNA Templates

Metal nanoarchitectures fabrication based on DNA assembly has attracted a good deal of attention. DNA nanotechnology enables precise organization of nanoscale objects with extraordinary structural programmability. The spatial addressability of DNA nanostructures and sequence-dependent recognition allow functional elements to be precisely positioned; thus, novel functional materials that are difficult to produce using conventional methods could be fabricated. This review focuses on the recent development of the fabrication strategies toward manipulating the shape and morphology of metal nanoparticles and nanoassemblies based on the rational design of DNA structures. DNA-mediated metallization, including DNA-templated conductive nanowire fabrication and sequence-selective metal deposition, etc., is briefly introduced. The modifications of metal nanoparticles (NPs) with DNA and subsequent construction of heterogeneous metal nanoarchitectures are highlighted. Importantly, DNA-assembled dynamic metal nanostructures that are responsive to different stimuli are also discussed as they allow the design of smart and dynamic materials. Meanwhile, the prospects and challenges of these shape-and morphology-controlled strategies are summarized.

Symmetry-Breaking Synthesis of Multicomponent Nanoparticles

Multicomponent nanoparticles (MCNs) composed of disparate inorganic colloidal components have attracted great attention from researchers in both the academic and industrial community, because of their unique properties and diverse applications in energy conversion and storage; heterogeneous catalysis; optics and electronics; and biomedical imaging, diagnosis, and therapy. Compared with single-component nanoparticles (NPs), new or advanced properties of MCNs arise from the synergistic effect between their constituent components and the presence of nanoscale interfaces between distinct materials within the particles. Consequently, the spatial arrangement of nanoscale domains of MCNs becomes equally important in property or function control of MCNs as their size, shape, and composition, if not more. In particular, compositionally asymmetric MCNs may outperform their symmetric counterparts in many of their applications. To this end, the seed-mediated growth (SMG) method, which involves depositing a second material onto seed NPs, has been considered as the most common strategy for the synthesis of asymmetric MCNs with desired complexity. In this approach, the control of symmetry breaking during MCN growth is usually achieved by manipulating the growth kinetics or using seed NPs with asymmetric shapes or surfaces. Although great progress has been made in the past decade, there remains a challenge to control the shape, orientation and organization of colloidal components of MCNs with a high yield and reproducibility. Recently, several unconventional methods have been developed as an important addition to the synthetic toolbox for the production of complex MCNs that otherwise may not be readily attainable. This Account summarizes recent advancements on the development of unconventional synthetic strategies for breaking the growth symmetry in the synthesis of asymmetric MCNs. We start with a brief discussion of the achievements and limitations of the conventional strategies for symmetry breaking synthesis. In the subsequent section, we present three unconventional approaches toward symmetry-breaking synthesis of asymmetric MCNs, namely, surface-protected growth, interface-guided growth, and welding-induced synthesis. First, we discuss how commonly used soft agents (e.g., collapsed polymer) and hard agents (e.g., silica) can be asymmetrically coated on seed NPs to template the asymmetric growth of secondary material, generating a broad range of MCNs with complex architectures. The unique features and key factors of this surface-protected synthesis are discussed from the viewpoints of the surface chemistry of seed NPs. We further discuss the use of a solid/liquid or liquid/liquid interface to guide the synthesis of Janus or more complex MCNs through two general mechanisms; that is, selective blocking or impeding the access of precursors to one side of seed NPs and interfacial reaction-enabled generation of asymmetric seeds for further growth. Finally, we discuss a symmetry-breaking method beyond the SMG mechanism, directed welding of as-synthesized single-component NPs. Moreover, we discuss how the unique structural symmetry and compositional arrangement of these MCNs significantly alter the physical and chemical properties of MCNs, thus facilitating their performance in exemplary applications of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. We finally conclude this Account with a summary of recent progress and our future perspective on the future challenges.

Silver Nanoparticles: Synthesis and Application for Nanomedicine

Over the past few decades, metal nanoparticles less than 100 nm in diameter have made a substantial impact across diverse biomedical applications, such as diagnostic and medical devices, for personalized healthcare practice. In particular, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have great potential in a broad range of applications as antimicrobial agents, biomedical device coatings, drug-delivery carriers, imaging probes, and diagnostic and optoelectronic platforms, since they have discrete physical and optical properties and biochemical functionality tailored by diverse size- and shape-controlled AgNPs. In this review, we aimed to present major routes of synthesis of AgNPs, including physical, chemical, and biological synthesis processes, along with discrete physiochemical characteristics of AgNPs. We also discuss the underlying intricate molecular mechanisms behind their plasmonic properties on mono/bimetallic structures, potential cellular/microbial cytotoxicity, and optoelectronic property. Lastly, we conclude this review with a summary of current applications of AgNPs in nanoscience and nanomedicine and discuss their future perspectives in these areas.

A welding phenomenon of dissimilar nanoparticles in dispersion

The oriented attachment of small nanoparticles (NPs) is recognized as an important mechanism involved in the growth of inorganic nanocrystals. However, non-oriented attachment of dissimilar NPs has been rarely observed in dispersion. This communication reports a welding phenomenon occurred directly between as-synthesized dispersions of single-component Au and chalcogenide NPs, which leads to the formation of asymmetric Au-chalcogenide hybrid NPs (HNPs). The welding of dissimilar NPs in dispersion is mainly driven by the ligand desorption-induced conformal contact between NPs and the diffusion of Au into chalcogenide NPs. The welding process can occur between NPs with distinct shapes or different capping agents or in different solvent media. A two-step assembly-welding mechanism is proposed for this process, based on our in situ electron spin resonance measurements and ab initio molecular dynamics simulation. The understanding of NP welding in dispersion may lead to the development of unconventional synthetic tools for the fabrication of hybrid nanostructures with diverse applications.

Space-Confined Seeded Growth of Black Silver Nanostructures for Solar Steam Generation

Plasmonic metal nanostructures have attracted considerable attention for solar energy harvesting due to their capability in photothermal conversion. However, the narrow resonant band of the conventional plasmonic nanoparticles greatly limits their application as only a small fraction of the solar energy can be utilized. Herein, a unique confined seeded growth strategy is developed to synthesize black silver nanostructures with broadband absorption in the visible and near-infrared spectrum. Through this novel strategy, assemblages of silver nanoparticles with widely distributed interparticle distances are generated in rod-shaped tubular spaces, leading to strong random plasmonic coupling and accordingly broadband absorption for significantly improved utilization of solar energy. With excellent efficiency in converting solar energy to heat, the resulting black Ag nanostructures can be made into thin films floating at the air/water interface for efficient generation of clean water steam through localized interfacial heating.
