A Metal-Directed Self-Assembled Electroactive Cage with Bis(pyrrolo)tetrathiafulvalene (BPTTF) Side Walls

Solvent Induced Conversion of a Self-Assembled Gyrobifastigium to a Barrel and Encapsulation of Zinc-Phthalocyanine within the Barrel for Enhanced Photodynamic Therapy

A rare gyrobifastigium architecture (GB) was constructed by self-assembly of a tetradentate donor (L) with Pd^II acceptor in DMSO. The GB was converted to its isomeric tetragonal barrel (MB) upon treatment with water. The hydrophobic cavity of MB has been explored for the encapsulation of zinc-phthalocyanine (ZnPc), which is an excellent photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy (PDT). However, the poor water-solubility and aggregation tendency are the main reasons for the suboptimal PDT performance of free ZnPc in the aqueous medium. Effective solubilization of ZnPc in an aqueous medium was achieved by encapsulating it in the cavity of MB. The inclusion complex (ZnPc⊂MB) showed enhanced singlet oxygen generation in water. Higher cellular uptake and anticancer activity of the ZnPc⊂MB compared to free ZnPc on HeLa cells indicate that encapsulation of ZnPc in an aqueous host is a potential strategy for enhancement of its PDT activity in water.

Tetramine Aspect Ratio and Flexibility Determine Framework Symmetry for Zn8 L6 Self-Assembled Structures

We derive design principles for the assembly of rectangular tetramines into Zn8 L6 pseudo-cubic coordination cages. Because of the rectangular, as opposed to square, geometry of the ligand panels, and the possibility of either Δ or Λ handedness of each metal center at the eight corners of the pseudo-cube, many different cage diastereomers are possible. Each of the six tetra-aniline subcomponents investigated in this work assembled with zinc(II) and 2-formylpyridine in acetonitrile into a single Zn8 L6 pseudo-cube diastereomer, however. Each product corresponded to one of four diastereomeric configurations, with T, Th , S6 or D3 symmetry. The preferred diastereomer for a given tetra-aniline subcomponent was shown to be dependent on its aspect ratio and conformational flexibility. Analysis of computationally modeled individual faces or whole pseudo-cubes provided insight as to why the observed diastereomers were favored.

Electron-Rich Diruthenium Complexes with π-Extended Alkenyl Ligands and Their F4 TCNQ Charge-Transfer Salts

The synthesis of dinuclear ruthenium alkenyl complexes with {Ru(CO)(Pⁱ Pr₃ )₂ (L)} entities (L=Cl^- in complexes Ru₂ -3 and Ru₂ -7; L=acetylacetonate (acac^- ) in complexes Ru₂ -4 and Ru₂ -8) and with π-conjugated 2,7-divinylphenanthrenediyl (Ru₂ -3, Ru₂ -4) or 5,8-divinylquinoxalinediyl (Ru₂ -7, Ru₂ -8) as bridging ligands are reported. The bridging ligands are laterally π-extended by anellating a pyrene (Ru₂ -7, Ru₂ -8) or a 6,7-benzoquinoxaline (Ru₂ -3, Ru₂ -4) π-perimeter. This was done with the hope that the open π-faces of the electron-rich complexes will foster association with planar electron acceptors via π-stacking. The dinuclear complexes were subjected to cyclic and square-wave voltammetry and were characterized in all accessible redox states by IR, UV/Vis/NIR and, where applicable, by EPR spectroscopy. These studies signified the one-electron oxidized forms of divinylphenylene-bridged complexes Ru₂ -7, Ru₂ -8 as intrinsically delocalized mixed-valent species, and those of complexes Ru₂ -3 and Ru₂ -4 with the longer divinylphenanthrenediyl linker as partially localized on the IR, yet delocalized on the EPR timescale. The more electron-rich acac^- congeners formed non-conductive 1 : 1 charge-transfer (CT) salts on treatment with the F₄ TCNQ electron acceptor. All spectroscopic techniques confirmed the presence of pairs of complex radical cations and F₄ TCNQ^.- radical anions in these CT salts, but produced no firm evidence for the relevance of π-stacking to their formation and properties.

Beyond Platonic: How to Build Metal-Organic Polyhedra Capable of Binding Low-Symmetry, Information-Rich Molecular Cargoes

The field of metallosupramolecular chemistry has advanced rapidly in recent years. Much work in this area has focused on the formation of hollow self-assembled metal-organic architectures and exploration of the applications of their confined nanospaces. These discrete, soluble structures incorporate metal ions as ‘glue’ to link organic ligands together into polyhedra.Most of the architectures employed thus far have been highly symmetrical, as these have been the easiest to prepare. Such high-symmetry structures contain pseudospherical cavities, and so typically bind roughly spherical guests. Biomolecules and high-value synthetic compounds are rarely isotropic, highly-symmetrical species. To bind, sense, separate, and transform such substrates, new, lower-symmetry, metal-organic cages are needed. Herein we summarize recent approaches, which taken together form the first draft of a handbook for the design of higher-complexity, lower-symmetry, self-assembled metal-organic architectures.

Exciton Coupling in Redox-Active Salen based Self-Assembled Metallacycles

The incorporation of a redox-active nickel salen complex into supramolecular structures was explored via coordination-driven self-assembly with homobimetallic ruthenium complexes (bridged by oxalato or 5,8-dihydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinato ligands). The self-assembly resulted in the formation of a discrete rectangle using the oxalato complex and either a rectangle or a catenane employing the larger naphthoquinonato complex. The formation of the interlocked self-assembly was determined to be solvent and concentration dependent. The electronic structure and stability of the oxidized metallacycles was probed using electrochemical experiments, UV-Vis-NIR absorption, EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations, confirming ligand radical formation. Exciton coupling of the intense near-infrared (NIR) ligand radical intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) bands provided further confirmation of the geometric and electronic structures in solution.

Enantiopure Polyradical Tetrahedral Pd12 L6 Cages

The synthesis of cages with a polyradical framework remains a challenging task. Herein is reported an enantiomeric pair of quinoid-bridged polyradical tetrahedral palladium(II) cages that are stabilized by an unusual dianionic diradical form (dhbq^..2- ). These cages have been characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance and UV-visible spectroscopy, squid magnetometry and mass spectrometry. Single-crystal-derived X-ray investigations of the iso-structural cages built on fluoranilate linkers confirm the tetrahedral structure of the obtained radical cages. Theoretical calculations showed that the diradical state of the dhbq anions is more stable than the usual monoradical state. A weak ferromagnetic exchange between adjacent radical centers was observed in DFT studies.

Electron-rich Coordination Receptors Based on Tetrathiafulvalene Derivatives: Controlling the Host-Guest Binding

The coordination-driven self-assembly methodology has emerged over the last few decades as an extraordinarily versatile synthetic tool for obtaining discrete macrocyclic or cage structures. Rational approaches using large libraries of ligands and metal complexes have allowed researchers to reach more and more sophisticated discrete structures such as interlocked, chiral, or heteroleptic cages, and some of them are designed for guest binding applications. Efforts have been notably produced in controlling host-guest affinity with, in particular, an evident interest in targeting substrate transportation and subsequent delivering. Recent accomplishments in this direction were described from functional cages which can be addressed with light, pH, or through a chemical exchange. The case of a redox-stimulation has been much less explored. In this case, the charge state of the redox-active cavity can be controlled through an applied electrical potential or introduction of an appropriate oxidizing/reducing chemical agent. Beyond possible applications in electrochemical sensing for environmental and medical sciences as well as for redox catalysis, controlling the cavity charge offers the possibility to modulate the host-guest binding affinity through electrostatic interactions, up to the point of disassembly of the host-guest complex, i.e., releasing of the guest molecule from the host cavity.This Account highlights the key studies that we carried out at Angers, related to discrete redox-active coordination-based architectures (i.e., metalla-rings, -cages, and -tweezers). These species are built upon metal-driven self-assembly between electron-rich ligands, based on the tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) moiety (as well as some of its S-rich derivatives), and various metal complexes. Given the high π-donating character of those ligands, the corresponding host structures exhibit a high electronic density on the cavity panels. This situation is favorable to bind complementary electron-poor guests, as it was illustrated with bis(pyrrolo)tetrathiafulvalene (BPTTF)-based cavities, which exhibit hosting properties for C₆₀ or tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ-F₄). In addition to the pristine tetrathiafulvalene, which was successfully incorporated into palladium- or ruthenium-based architectures, the case of the so-called extended tetrathiafulvalene (exTTF) appears particularly fascinating. A series of related polycationic and neutral M₄L₂ ovoid containers, as well as a M₆L₃ cage, were synthesized, and their respective binding abilities for neutral and anionic guests were studied. Remarkably, such structures allow to control of the binding of the guest upon a redox-stimulation, through two distinctive processes: (i) cage disassembling or (ii) guest displacement. As an extension of this approach, metalla-assembled electron-rich tweezers were designed, which are able to trigger the guest release through an original process based on supramolecular dimerization activated through a redox stimulus. This ensemble of results illustrates the remarkable ability of electron-rich, coordination-based self-assembled cavities to bind various types of guests and, importantly, to trigger their release through a redox-stimulus.

Zinc-Ion-Stabilized Charge-Transfer Interactions Drive Self-Complementary or Complementary Molecular Recognition

Here, we show that charge-transfer interactions determine whether donor and acceptor ditopic ligands will associate in a complementary or self-complementary fashion upon metal-ion clipping. Anthracene-based (^9,10L_D and ^1,5L_D) and anthraquinone-based (^1,5L_A) ditopic ligands containing two imidazole side arms as zinc coordination sites were designed. The ^9,10L_D and ^1,5L_A systems associated in a complementary fashion (L_A/L_D/L_A) upon clipping by two zinc ions (Zn²⁺) to form an alternating donor-acceptor assembly [(^9,10L_D)(^1,5L_A)₂-(Zn²⁺)₂]. However, once the charge-transfer interactions were perturbed by subtle modifications of the imidazole side arms (^9,10L_D'^(S) and ^1,5L_A'^(S)), self-complementary association (L_D'/L_D'/L_D'/L_D' and L_A'/L_A'/L_A'/L_A') between the donor (^9,10L_D'^(S)) and acceptor (^1,5L_A'^(S)) ligands predominantly occurred to form homoassemblies [(^9,10L_D'^(S))₄-(Zn²⁺)₂ and (^1,5L_A'^(S))₄-(Zn²⁺)₂]. As in the case of a homochiral pair (^9,10L_D'^(S) and ^1,5L_A'^(S)), self-complementary association (narcissistic self-sorting) occurred in the Zn²⁺ assembly with heterochiral combinations of the donor and acceptor ligands (^9,10L_D'^(S)/^1,5L_A'^(R) and ^9,10L_D'^(S)/^1,5L_A'^(R)/^1,5L_A'^(R)). Narcissistic self-sorting also took place between the positional isomer of the donor ligands (^9,10L_D and ^1,5L_D) to form individual homoligand assemblies [(^9,10L_D)₄-(Zn²⁺)₂ and (^1,5L_D)₄-(Zn²⁺)₂]. Conversely, statistical association took place in the Zn₂L₄ assembly process of an isomorphous pair of the donor and acceptor ligands (^1,5L_D and ^1,5L_A).

How to Control the Rate of Heterogeneous Electron Transfer across the Rim of M6L12 and M12L24 Nanospheres

Catalysis in confined spaces, such as those provided by supramolecular cages, is quickly gaining momentum. It allows for second coordination sphere strategies to control the selectivity and activity of transition metal catalysts, beyond the classical methods like fine-tuning the steric and electronic properties of the coordinating ligands. Only a few electrocatalytic reactions within cages have been reported, and there is no information regarding the electron transfer kinetics and thermodynamics of redox-active species encapsulated into supramolecular assemblies. This contribution revolves around the preparation of M6L12 and larger M12L24 (M = Pd or Pt) nanospheres functionalized with different numbers of redox-active probes encapsulated within their cavity, either in a covalent fashion via different types of linkers (flexible, rigid and conjugated or rigid and nonconjugated) or by supramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. The redox probes can be addressed by electrochemical electron transfer across the rim of nanospheres, and the thermodynamics and kinetics of this process are described. Our study identifies that the linker type and the number of redox probes within the cage are useful handles to fine-tune the electron transfer rates, paving the way for the encapsulation of electroactive catalysts and electrocatalytic applications of such supramolecular assemblies.

Metalla-Assembled Electron-Rich Tweezers: Redox-Controlled Guest Release Through Supramolecular Dimerization

Developing methodologies for on-demand control of the release of a molecular guest requires the rational design of stimuli-responsive hosts with functional cavities. While a substantial number of responsive metallacages have already been described, the case of coordination-tweezers has been less explored. Herein, we report the first example of a redox-triggered guest release from a metalla-assembled tweezer. This tweezer incorporates two redox-active panels constructed from the electron-rich 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)fluorene unit that are facing each other. It dimerizes spontaneously in solution and the resulting interpenetrated supramolecular structure can dissociate in the presence of an electron-poor planar unit, forming a 1:1 host-guest complex. This complex dissociates upon tweezer oxidation/dimerization, offering an original redox-triggered molecular delivery pathway.

An l-glutamine-containing tetrathiafulvalene gelator could form charge-transfer complex gels in the presence of C₆₀, and also the native gel exhibited excellent absorption properties for the removal of rhodamine B from aqueous solution.

Chiral Self-Sorting in Truxene-Based Metallacages

Two chiral face-rotating metalla-assembled polyhedra were constructed upon self-assembling achiral components, i.e., a tritopic ligand based on a truxene core (10,15-dihydro-5H-diindeno[1,2-a;1′,2′-c]fluorene) and two different hydroxyquinonato–bridged diruthenium complexes. Both polyhedra were characterized in solution as well as in the solid state by X-ray crystallography. In both cases, the self-sorting process leading to only two homo-chiral enantiomers was governed by non-covalent interactions between both truxene units that faced each other.

Coordination-driven assembly of a supramolecular square and oxidation to a tetra-ligand radical species

The design and synthesis of a supramolecular square was achieved by coordination-driven assembly of redox-active nickel(ii) salen linkers and (ethylenediamine)palladium(ii) nodes. The tetrameric geometry of the supramolecular structure was confirmed via MS, NMR, and electrochemical experiments. While oxidation of the monomeric metalloligand Schiff-base affords a Ni(iii) species, oxidation of the coordination-driven assembly results in ligand radical formation.

New π-extended catecholato complexes of Pt(ii) and Pd(ii) containing a benzothienobenzothiophene (BTBT) moiety: synthesis, electrochemical behavior and charge transfer properties

Benzothienobenzothiophene (BTBT) and derivatives have received increasing attention as organic field-effect transistor materials and molecular conductors. This report presents the first synthesis of metal complexes involving a BTBT moiety, which was achieved by complexation of 2,2'-bipyridyl complexes of Pt(ii) and Pd(ii) with dihydroxy-substituted BTBT (1) as a new π-extended catecholato ligand (^tBu₂Bpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridyl). The resulting complexes M(^tBu₂Bpy)(O₂BTBT) (M = Pt (3Pt) and Pd (3Pd)) were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and cyclic voltammetry. The electron donating ability of BTBT was substantially enhanced upon including two oxygen substituents followed by metal coordination. This enabled chemical oxidation of 3Pt and 3Pd with a mild chemical oxidant (ferrocenium hexafluorophosphate) and formation of the one-electron-oxidized state. While 3Pt and 3Pd exhibited an absorption band originating from a catecholate → Bpy ligand-to-ligand charge transfer transition typical of this class of catecholato complexes, the radical cations exhibited a unique π-π* intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transition absorption in which the π and π* orbitals were the newly incorporated benzothienothiophene-based donor and semiquinonato-based acceptor, respectively. The BTBT⁺ skeleton was electronically divided into two sites by the present chemical modification. The ICT properties of the complexes were found to be modulated by varying the metal ions. These findings offer a new approach to molecular design for (semi)conducting materials using optical properties.

Redox-active M₆L₄ cages display multiple reversible redox-events, enabling switching from overall +12 to −4 charged species with reversible storage of 16 electrons.

Donor-Site-Directed Rational Assembly of Heteroleptic cis-[Pd2 L2 L'2 ] Coordination Cages from Picolyl Ligands

A donor-site engineering approach facilitates the formation of heteroleptic [Pd2 L2 L'2 ]4+ cage structures through a favored cis-'in2 /out2 ' spatial configuration of the methyl groups of 5- and 3-substituted bis-monodentate picolyl ligands with flat acridone and bent phenothiazine backbones. The heteroleptic cages were confirmed by ESI-MS and 2D NMR experiments as well as DFT calculations, which pointed toward a cis-configuration being energetically favored. This was further supported by the synthesis and X-ray structure of a previously unreported cis-[Pd(2-picoline)4 ]2+ complex. The formation of homoleptic structures, however, was met with considerable steric hindrance at the PdII centers, as observed by the formation of [Pd2 L3 (solvent)2 ]4+ and [Pd2 L2 (solvent)4 ]4+ species when only one type of acridone-based ligand was offered. In contrast, bent phenothiazine ligands with outside-pointing methyl groups showed the ability to form interpenetrated double-cages, as revealed by X-ray crystallography. The general route presented herein enables the assembly of uniform cis-[Pd2 L2 L'2 ]4+ coordination cages, thus furthering the possibility to increase structural and functional complexity in supramolecular systems.

Functionalised tetrathiafulvalene- (TTF-) macrocycles: recent trends in applied supramolecular chemistry

Tetrathiafulvalene- (TTF-) based macrocyclic systems, cages and supramolecularly self-assembled 3D constructs have been extensively explored as functional materials for sensing and switching applications.

Efficient and Rapid Mechanochemical Assembly of Platinum(II) Squares for Guanine Quadruplex Targeting

We present a rapid and efficient method to generate a family of platinum supramolecular square complexes, including previously inaccessible targets, through the use of ball milling mechanochemistry. This one-pot, two-step process occurs in minutes and enables the synthesis of the squares [Pt₄(en)₄(N∩N)₄][CF₃SO₃]₈ (en= ethylenediamine, N∩N = 4,4'-bipyridine derivatives) from commercially available precursor K₂PtCl₄ in good to excellent yields. In contrast, solution-based assembly requires heating the reagents for weeks and gives lower yields. Mechanistic investigations into this remarkable rate acceleration revealed that solution-based assembly (refluxing for days) results in the formation of large oligomeric side-products that are difficult to break down into the desired squares. On the other hand, ball milling in the solid state is rapid and appears to involve smaller intermediates. We examined the binding of the new supramolecular squares to guanine quadruplexes, including oncogene and telomere-associated DNA and RNA sequences. Sub-micromolar binding affinities were obtained by fluorescence displacement assays (FID) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), with binding preference to telomere RNA (TERRA) sequences. ITC showed a 1:1 binding stoichiometry of the metallosquare to TERRA, while the stoichiometry was more complex for telomeric quadruplex DNA and a double-stranded DNA control.

The Intricate Structural Chemistry of MII2nLn-Type Assemblies

The reaction of cis-blocked, square-planar M^II complexes with tetratopic N-donor ligands is known to give metallasupramolecular assemblies of the formula M_2nL_n. These assemblies typically adopt barrel-like structures, with the ligands paneling the sides of the barrels. However, alternative structures are possible, as demonstrated by the recent discovery of a Pt₈L₄ cage with unusual gyrobifastigium-like geometry. To date, the factors that govern the assembly of M^II_2nL_n complexes are not well understood. Herein, we provide a geometric analysis of M_2nL_n complexes, and we discuss how size and geometry of the ligand is expected to influence the self-assembly process. The theoretical analysis is complemented by experimental studies using different cis-blocked Pt^II complexes and metalloligands with four divergent pyridyl groups. Mononuclear metalloligands gave mainly assemblies of type Pt₈L₄, which adopt barrel- or gyrobifastigium-like structures. Larger assemblies can also form, as evidenced by the crystallographic characterization of a Pt₁₀L₅ complex and a Pt₁₆L₈ complex. The former adopts a pentagonal barrel structure, whereas the latter displays a barrel structure with a distorted square orthobicupola geometry. The Pt₁₆L₈ complex has a molecular weight of more than 23 kDa and a diameter of 4.5 nm, making it the largest, structurally characterized M_2nL_n complex described to date. A dinuclear metalloligand was employed for the targeted synthesis of pentagonal Pt₁₀L₅ barrels, which are formed in nearly quantitative yields.

Reversible Guest Uptake/Release by Redox-Controlled Assembly/Disassembly of a Coordination Cage

Controlling the guest expulsion process from a receptor is of critical importance in various fields. Several coordination cages have been recently designed for this purpose, based on various types of stimuli to induce the guest release. Herein, we report the first example of a redox-triggered process from a coordination cage. The latter integrates a cavity, the panels of which are based on the extended tetrathiafulvalene unit (exTTF). The unique combination of electronic and conformational features of this framework (i.e. high π-donating properties and drastic conformational changes upon oxidation) allows the reversible disassembly/reassembly of the redox-active cavity upon chemical oxidation/reduction, respectively. This cage is able to bind the three-dimensional B12 F12 (2-) anion in a 1:2 host/guest stoichiometry. The reversible redox-triggered disassembly of the cage could also be demonstrated in the case of the host-guest complex, offering a new option for guest-delivering control.

A Suite of Tetraphenylethylene-Based Discrete Organoplatinum(II) Metallacycles: Controllable Structure and Stoichiometry, Aggregation-Induced Emission, and Nitroaromatics Sensing

Materials that organize multiple functionally active sites, especially those with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties, are of growing interest due to their widespread applications. Despite promising early architectures, the fabrication and preparation of multiple AIEgens, such as multiple tetraphenylethylene (multi-TPE) units, in a single entity remain a big challenge due to the tedious covalent synthetic procedures often accompanying such preparations. Coordination-driven self-assembly is an alternative synthetic methodology with the potential to deliver multi-TPE architectures with light-emitting characteristics. Herein, we report the preparation of a new family of discrete multi-TPE metallacycles in which two pendant phenyl rings of the TPE units remain unused as a structural element, representing novel AIE-active metal-organic materials based on supramolecular coordination complex platforms. These metallacycles possess relatively high molar absorption coefficients but weak fluorescent emission under dilute conditions because of the ability of the untethered phenyl rings to undergo torsional motion as a non-radiative decay pathway. Upon molecular aggregation, the multi-TPE metallacycles show AIE-activity with markedly enhanced quantum yields. Moreover, on account of their AIE characteristics in the condensed state and ability to interact with electron-deficient substrates, the photophysics of these metallacycles is sensitive to the presence of nitroaromatics, motivating their use as sensors. This work represents a unification of themes including molecular self-assembly, AIE, and fluorescence sensing and establishes structure-property-application relationships of multi-TPE scaffolds. The fundamental knowledge obtained from the current research facilitates progress in the field of metal-organic materials, metal-coordination-induced emission, and fluorescent sensing.

Advances in the synthesis of functionalised pyrrolotetrathiafulvalenes

The electron-donor and unique redox properties of the tetrathiafulvalene (TTF, 1) moiety have led to diverse applications in many areas of chemistry. Monopyrrolotetrathiafulvalenes (MPTTFs, 4) and bispyrrolotetrathiafulvalenes (BPTTFs, 5) are useful structural motifs and have found widespread use in fields such as supramolecular chemistry and molecular electronics. Protocols enabling the synthesis of functionalised MPTTFs and BPTTFs are therefore of broad interest. Herein, we present the synthesis of a range of functionalised MPTTF and BPTTF species. Firstly, the large-scale preparation of the precursor species N-tosyl-(1,3)-dithiolo[4,5-c]pyrrole-2-one (6) is described, as well as the synthesis of the analogue N-tosyl-4,6-dimethyl-(1,3)-dithiolo[4,5-c]pyrrole-2-one (7). Thereafter, we show how 6 and 7 can be used to prepare BPTTFs using homocoupling reactions and functionalised MPTTFs using cross-coupling reactions with a variety of 1,3-dithiole-2-thiones (19). Subsequently, the incorporation of more complex functionality is discussed. We show how the 2-cyanoethyl protecting group can be used to afford MPTTFs functionalised with thioethers, exemplified by a series of ethylene glycol derivatives. Additionally, the merits of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) as an alternative to the most common deprotecting agent, CsOH·H2O are discussed. Finally, we show how a copper-mediated Ullman-type reaction can be applied to the N-arylation of MPTTFs and BPTTFs using a variety of aryl halides.

Glycoluril-tetrathiafulvalene molecular clips: on the influence of electronic and spatial properties for binding neutral accepting guests

Glycoluril-based molecular clips incorporating tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) sidewalls have been synthesized through different strategies with the aim of investigating the effect of electrochemical and spatial properties for binding neutral accepting guests. We have in particular focused our study on the spacer extension in order to tune the intramolecular TTF···TTF distance within the clip and, consequently, the redox behavior of the receptor. Carried out at different concentrations in solution, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical experiments provide evidence of mixed-valence and/or π-dimer intermolecular interactions between TTF units from two closed clips. The stepwise oxidation of each molecular clip involves an electrochemical mechanism with three one-electron processes and two charge-coupled chemical reactions, a scheme which is supported by electrochemical simulations. The fine-tunable π-donating ability of the TTF units and the cavity size allow to control binding interaction towards a strong electron acceptor such as tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ) or a weaker electron acceptor such as 1,3-dinitrobenzene (m-DNB).

Tuning the size of a redox-active tetrathiafulvalene-based self-assembled ring

The synthesis of a new Pd coordination-driven self-assembled ring M6L3 constructed from a concave tetrapyridyl π-extended tetrathiafulvalene ligand (exTTF) is described. The same ligand is also able to self-assemble in a M4L2 mode as previously described. Herein, we demonstrate that the bulkiness of the ancillary groups in the Pd complex allows for modulating the size and the shape of the resulting discrete self-assembly, which therefore incorporate two (M4L2) or three (M6L3) electroactive exTTF sidewalls.
