Abstract
We demonstrate that Cu2B8- exhibits distinct fluxional behavior, akin to that of a functional stirrer, with the Cu2 dimer freely rotating on the B8 molecular wheel. This behavior is confirmed by Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations. The initiation of this dynamic motion is facilitated by an ultrasoft vibrational mode (less than 10 cm-1), resulting in a negligible rotational barrier of 0.03 kcal/mol, as calculated at the single-point CCSD(T) level. The high stability of Cu2B8- arises from the strong interlayer electrostatic interaction between Cu2 and B8, due to charge transfer from Cu2 to B8, along with additional covalent interactions from the delocalized π electrons of the B8 wheel to the Cu2 dimer. Notably, the Cu2 dimer in Cu2B8- features a two-center one-electron Cu-Cu single bond, while the B82- moiety displays double aromaticity, characterized by the presence of six delocalized π electrons and six delocalized σ electrons.

Abstract
ConspectusWith three valence electrons and four valence orbitals, boron (2s22p1) is an electron-deficient element, resulting in interesting chemical bonding and structures in both borane molecules and bulk boron materials. The electron deficiency leads to electron sharing and delocalization in borane compounds and bulk boron allotropes, characterized by polyhedral cages, in particular, the ubiquitous B12 icosahedral cage. During the past two decades, the structures and bonding of size-selected boron clusters have been elucidated via combined photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical investigations. Unlike bulk boron materials, finite boron clusters have been found to possess 2D structures consisting of B3 triangles, dotted with tetragonal, pentagonal, or hexagonal holes. The discovery of the planar B36 cluster with a central hexagonal hole provided the first experimental evidence for the viability of 2D boron nanostructures (borophene), which have been synthesized on inert substrates. The B7-, B8-, and B9- clusters were among the first few boron clusters to be investigated by joint photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, and they were all found to possess 2D structures with a central B atom inside a Bn ring. Recently, the B73- (C6v), B82- (D7h), and B9- (D8h) series of closed-shell species were shown to possess similar π bonding akin to that in the C5H5-, C6H6, and C7H7+ series, respectively, and the name "borozene" was coined to highlight their analogy to the classical aromatic hydrocarbon molecules.Among the borozenes, the D7h B82- species is unique for its high stability originating from both its double aromaticity and the fact that the B7 ring has the perfect size to host a central B atom. The B82- borozene has been realized experimentally in a variety of MB8 and M2B8 complexes. In particular, the B82- borozene has been observed to stabilize the rare valence-I oxidation state of lanthanides in LnB8- complexes, as well as a Cu2+ species in Cu2B8-. The B6 ring in B73- is too small to host a B atom, resulting in a slight out-of-plane distortion. Interestingly, the bowl-shaped B7 borozene is perfect for coordination to a metal atom, leading to the observation of a series of highly stable MB7 borozene complexes. On the other hand, the B8 ring is slightly too large to host the central B atom, such that a low-lying and low-symmetry isomer also exists for B9-. Even though most 2D boron clusters are aromatic, the B73-, B82-, and B9- borozenes are special because of their high symmetries and their analogy to the series of C5H5-, C6H6, and C7H7+ prototypical aromatic compounds. This Account discusses recent experimental and theoretical advances on the investigations of various borozene complexes. It is expected that many new borozene compounds can be designed and may be eventually synthesized.

Abstract
The introduction of transition-metal doping has engendered a remarkable array of unprecedented boron motifs characterized by distinctive geometries and bonding, particularly those heretofore unobserved in pure boron clusters. In this study, we present a perfect (no defects) boron framework manifesting an inherently high-symmetry, bowl-like architecture, denoted as MB16 - (M=Sc, Y, La). In MB16 -, the B16 is coordinated to M atoms along the C5v-symmetry axis. The bowl-shaped MB16 - structure is predicted to be the lowest-energy structure with superior stability, owing to its concentric (2 π+10 π) dual π aromaticity. Notably, the C5v-symmetry bowl-like B16 - is profoundly stabilized through the doping of an M atom, facilitated by strong d-pπ interactions between M and boron motifs, in conjunction with additional electrostatic stabilization by an electron transfer from M to the boron motifs. This concerted interplay of covalent and electrostatic interactions between M and bowl-like B16 renders MB16 - a species of exceptional thermodynamic stability, thus making it a viable candidate for gas-phase experimental detection.

Abstract
This study presents a thorough reinvestigation of the B15+/0/- isomers, first employing coupled-cluster theory CCSD(T) calculations to validate the performance of different DFT functionals. The B15+ cation has two planar lowest-lying isomers, while the first 3D isomer is less stable than the global minimum by ∼10 kcal mol-1. The PBE functional, within this benchmark survey, has proved to be reliable in predicting relative energies for boron isomers. Other functionals such as the TPSSh, PBE0 and HSE06 result in good energy ordering of isomers but warrant reconsideration when distinguishing between 2D and 3D forms. Caution is needed for structures having high spin contamination, as it may lead to significant errors. The anomalously lower stability of the B15- anion with respect to its neighbours, in terms of electron detachment energy, was explained through a competition between both rectangle and disk models for its geometry. This elucidates its stability with 12 electrons in rectangle model and instability with 10 electrons in disk-shaped structure, emphasizing the value of employing such geometric models. The proximity of the σ* LUMO to the π HOMO also contributes to the weakening of the B15- stability.

Abstract
Using a new method of η5-Li and η6-Mg atoms capping the faces of the classical fullerene-like borospherene Td B40, we theoretically predict an exohedral metalloborospherene Td Mg10Li12&B40 molecule. Remarkably, a newfangled endoexo cage isomerism is proposed. Further, embedding Mg atoms in the Td B40 cage forms endohedral derivatives. Due to the intramolecular pull-push electron transfer relay, these obtained molecules possess unequal multilayered and alternant spherical charge distribution. The outer is an excess electron layer, bringing a molecular nonlinear switch character and an electron reservoir behavior with strong electron-donating and -accepting abilities. The middle (Mg2+)10(Li+)12 and the outer layers together constitute an electric double layer, presenting the behavior of a molecular capacitor where the electronic charge-discharge process occurs in the outer excess electron layer. The inner part is an empty cage B4026- with a strong negative electric field. The valence electrons of the embedded Mg atoms are transformed into new excess electrons and added in the outer excess electron layer, also exhibiting the charging behavior of the molecular capacitor. Considering the chemical reaction in the inner cage, the embedded Mg atom is ionized, forming an Mg2+ cation and 2e under the strong negative electric field; meanwhile, 2e is powerfully pushed into the outer excess electron layer. This chemical process shows a generalized Coulomb explosion, and thus the exohedral metalloborospherene molecules with cage B4026- may act as molecular reactors. The new species mark the genesis of classical fullerene-like borospherene chemistry and stimulate their applications in molecular nonlinear optical and nanoelectronics.

Abstract
In this article, we studied the capability of bulky groups to contribute to the stabilization of a given compound in addition to the well-known steric effect related to substituents due to their composition (alkyl chains and aromatic groups, among others). For this purpose, the recently synthesized 1-bora-3-boratabenzene anion which contains large substituents was analyzed by means of the independent gradient model (IGM), natural population analysis (NPA) at the TPSS/def2-TZVP level, force field-based energy decomposition analysis (EDA-FF) applying the universal force field (UFF), and molecular dynamics calculations under the GFN2-xTB approach. The results indicate that the bulky groups should not only be considered for their steric effects but also for their ability to stabilize a system that could be very reactive.

Abstract
Inverse sandwich clusters composed of a monocyclic boron ring and two capping transition metal atoms are interesting alloy cluster systems, yet their chemical bonding nature has not been sufficiently elucidated to date. We report herein on the theoretical prediction of a new example of boron-based inverse sandwich alloy clusters, V2B7-, through computational global-minimum structure searches and quantum chemical calculations. This alloy cluster has a heptatomic boron ring as well as a perpendicular V2 dimer unit that penetrates through the ring. Chemical bonding analysis suggests that the inverse sandwich cluster is governed by globally delocalized 6π and 6σ frameworks, that is, double 6π/6σ aromaticity following the (4n + 2) Hückel rule. The skeleton B-B σ bonding in the cluster is shown not to be strictly Lewis-type two-center two-electron (2c-2e) σ bonds. Rather, these are quasi-Lewis-type, roof-like 4c-2e V-B2-V σ bonds, which amount to seven in total and cover the whole surface of inverse sandwich in a truly three-dimensional manner. Theoretical evidence is revealed for a 2c-2e Lewis σ single bond within the V2 dimer. Direct metal-metal bonding is scarce in inverse sandwich alloy clusters. The present inverse sandwich alloy cluster also offers a new type of electronic transmutation in physical chemistry, which helps establish an intriguing chemical analogy between inverse sandwich clusters and planar hypercoordinate molecular wheels.

Abstract
Through utilizing density functional theory (DFT), the current work investigates the potential uses of Al24P24 fullerene for detecting CS2, H2S, SO2, and COS. The interaction order for the stability of these gases was SO2 > H2S > COS > CS2. The moment of electric dipole and molecules' adsorption energy seems correlated. Al24P24 fullerene is regarded as an electronic sensor of the Ф-type for detecting SO2 and CS2. According to the findings, CS2 and SO2 might act as Al24P24 fullerenes when H2S is present. Nevertheless, we cannot presume it to be a COS and H2S sensor of Ф-type. At room temperature, the fullerene of Al24P24 has a quick recovery time of 0.50 μs and 0.17 s in CS2 and SO2 desorption from the surface. It can thus be inferred that it has the ability to function in moist media.

Abstract
Being intermediate between small compounds and bulk materials, nanoparticles possess unique properties different from those of atoms, molecules, and bulk matter. In the past two decades, a combination of cluster structure prediction algorithms and experimental spectroscopy techniques was successfully used for exploration of the ground-state structures of pure and metal-doped boron clusters. The fruitfulness of this dual approach is well illustrated by the discovery of intriguing microstructures and unique physicochemical properties such as aromaticity and bond fluxionality for both boron and metal-doped boron clusters. Our review starts with an overview of geometrical configurations of pure boron clusters Bn, which are presented by planar, nanotube, bilayer, fullerene-like and core-shell structures, in a wide range ofnvalues. We consider next recent advances in studies of boron clusters doped with metal atoms paying close and thoughtful attention to modifications of geometric and electronic structures of pure boron clusters by heteroatoms. Finally, we discuss the possibility of constructing boron-based nanomaterials with specific functions from metal-boron clusters. Despite a variety of fruitful results obtained in numerous studies of boron clusters, the exploration of boron-based chemistry has not yet reached its peak. The intensive research continues in this area, and it should be expected that it brings exciting discoveries of intriguing new structures.

Abstract
The beryllium-doped Be3B11- cluster has two nearly isoenergetic isomers, adopting the smallest trihedral spherical geometries with a boron single-chain skeleton. The B11 skeleton in the global minimum (C2v, 1A1) comprises three conjoined boron rings (one B8/two B7) on the waist, sharing two B3 equilateral triangles at the top and bottom, respectively. However, the local minimum (Cs, 1A') has one deformed B4 pyramid at the top. The drastic structural transformation of B11 skeletons from perfectly planar B11 clusters mainly profited from robust electrostatic interaction between Be atoms and B11 skeletons. The dynamic simulations suggest that two species can interconvert via a novel mechanism, that is "triangle-pyramid-triangle", which facilitates the free migration of boron atoms in the B11 skeleton, thereby showing the fascinating dynamic fluxionality. The chemical bonding analyses reveal that the B11 skeleton is covered by two types of delocalized π bonds in an orthogonal direction, which leads to its spherical aromaticity.

Abstract
The transition-metal centered boron molecular wheels have attracted the attention of chemists. The highest deca-coordination number for central metal atoms was observed in D 10h Ta©B10 - and Nb©B10 - molecular wheels. Here, we report a theoretical study of La©B8C4 q (q = +1, 0, -1) clusters with the dodeca-coordinated La atom. The La©B8C4 q clusters adopt fascinating molecular wheel structures, showing a La atom enclosed by a perfect B8C4 monocyclic ring. The cationic La©B8C4 + cluster has a C 4v symmetry with the distinctly out-of-plane distortion of the La atom (0.70 Å), which is gradually flattened by the sequential reduction reaction. The distortion of the La atom from the plane in the neutral La©B8C4 cluster decreases to 0.46 Å. The La©B8C4 - species turns out to be perfectly planar. Chemical bonding analyses indicate that the neutral La©B8C4 and anionic La©B8C4 - possess 10σ and 9π/10π double aromaticity, respectively, obeying the principle of double aromaticity. However, the cationic La©B8C4 + has 10σ and 8π conflicting aromaticity, representing a counterexample in planar hyper-coordinated molecular wheels. The dodeca-coordination number in La©B8C4 q (q = +1, 0, -1) clusters is unprecedented, which provides a new idea and concept for searching planar hyper-coordinated systems.

Abstract
Favipiravir (FPV) is an antiviral drug used for the cure of Influenza virus, Ebola virus, Lassa virus etc. because it has excellent preventing ability of entry/exit of the virus into/from the human cells. Boron nitride nanocages have already drawn enormous attention as the delivery vehicle of various drug molecules for their nontoxicity and other lucrative properties. In this research, we have scrutinized the adsorption mechanism of FPV molecule on the exterior surface of pristine, Zn functionalized, and Ni functionalized B12N12 (BN, Zn f-BN, and Ni f-BN) nanocages by applying the DFT/QTAIM method and B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) approach. The adsorption energy (EAd) data reveal that the functionalized BN adsorbents can adsorb FPV drug very efficiently compared with the pristine adsorbent (Highest EAd is -56.40 kcal/mol for FPV adsorbed Ni f-BN complex). The reduction of the HOMO-LUMO gap up to 67.79% indicates that this drug can be detected by the produced electrical signal very promisingly in the case of f-BN nanocages. The topological parameters also validate the ability of the f-BN nanocages to adsorb the FPV molecule. The effect of the biological environment of our investigated structures has been studied by using water as a solvent, and spontaneous adsorption with high solubility is observed in our calculations. This analysis also reveals that f-BN nanocages can be a potential nanocarrier for the delivery of FPV drug molecule.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
Here, it is shown that the M3B12 (M = Cu-Au) clusters' global minima consist of an elongated planar B12 fragment connected by an in-plane linear M3 fragment. This result is striking since this B12 planar structure is not favored in the bare cluster, nor when one or two metals are added. The minimum energy structures were revealed by screening the potential energy surface using genetic algorithms and density functional theory calculations. Chemical bonding analysis shows that the strong electrostatic interactions with the metal compensate for the high energy spent in the M3 and B12 fragment distortion. Furthermore, metals participate in the delocalized π-bonds, which infers an aromatic character to these species.

Abstract
PURPOSE AND METHODS A global search for the lowest energy structure of CoB192- clusters was conducted. RESULTS: Its ground state is a quasi-planar structure with the Co atom surrounded by a B8 ring. The central Co atom has an oxidation state of +1 with d8 electron configuration. The wave function analysis showed that the Co-B interaction is not a covalent bond. The bonding strength of peripheral B-B bonds is stronger than that of inner ones. The inner B8 ring bonds with outer boron atoms via σ- and π-type bonds. CONCLUSION CoB192- shows remarkable aromatic character.

Abstract
Cluster is the intermediate of individual atom and larger agglomeration. The structural evolutions of clusters are critically important to explore the physical properties of bulk solids. Here, we carry out systematic structure predictions of medium-sized vanadium-doped boron clusters by using crystal structure analysis by particle swarm optimization method combined with density function theory calculations. A great deal of low-lying isomers with attractive geometries are discovered, such as the crown-like VB18-cluster and the drum-like VB20-cluster. Interestingly, the VB12-cluster possesses excellently relative stability due to its higher second-order difference and larger highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy gap. The molecular orbitals (MOs) and adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP) analysis indicate that the 3dorbitals of V atom and the 2pand 2sorbitals of B atoms are the primary constituents of the MOs, and the interactions between V and B atoms are the main factor for the robust stabilization of the anionic VB12-cluster. The present findings advance the understanding of the structural evolution of transition metal doped boron clusters and offer crucial insights for future experiments.

Abstract
A low-lying structure is revealed for the CuB 12 - cluster, which is bowl-shaped. It consists of a triangular CuB 2 base and a B 10 rim. Molecular dynamics simulations evidence its structural robustness; at an elevated temperature (600 K), the base rotates reversibly within the B 10 perimeter. Chemical bonding analysis detects 2σ- and 3π-delocalized bonds, suggesting double aromaticity, which is confirmed by two diatropic and concentric ring currents under an external magnetic field.

Abstract
Boron oxide clusters have structural diversity and unique chemical bonding, and recent literature has shown that boronyl complexes dominate boron-rich oxide clusters. A counterexample in boronyl chemistry is presented in this work. Using global structural searches, electronic structure calculations, and chemical bonding analyses, we shall report on the computational design of two boron-based quasi-planar or planar clusters: B12O and B11Au. Contrary to expectation, the B12O cluster has a circular quasi-planar shape with a peripheral B-O-B bridge, which resembles bare B12 cluster. It does not contain a boronyl ligand. The isomeric boronyl complex turns out to be 10.32 kcal mol-1 higher in energy at the single-point CCSD(T) level. In contrast, B11Au cluster behaves normally with an elongated B11 moiety and a terminal Au ligand. Chemical bonding analyses reveal three-fold π/σ aromaticity in circular B12O cluster, including global 6π aromaticity, as well as spatially isolated inner 2σ aromaticity and outer 10σ aromaticity. The three-fold 6π/2σ/10σ aromaticity underlies the stability of B12O cluster. This bonding picture is unknown for bare B12 cluster and its derivatives. The elongated B11Au cluster has conflicting π/σ aromaticity (with 6π versus 8σ electron-counting). The B12O cluster is actually isoelectronic with bare B12 cluster in terms of delocalized π/σ bonding, which inherits the structural and electronic robustness of the latter.

Abstract
Theoretical evidence is reported for a boron-based K6Be2B6H6 sandwich cluster, showing a perfectly D 6h B6H6 ring, being capped by two tetrahedral K3Be ligands. Due to the comfortable charge transfer, the sandwich is viable in [K3Be]3+[B6H6]6-[BeK3]3+ ionic complex in nature. The [B6H6]6- core with 6π aromaticity vividly imitates the benzene (C6H6), occurring as a real borozene. In contrast, the tetrahedral [K3Be]3+ ligand is 2σ three-dimensional aromatic, acting as the simple superatom. Thus, this complex possesses a collectively three-fold 2σ/6π/2σ aromaticity. The interlaminar interaction is governed by the robust electrostatic attraction. The unique chemical bonding gives rise to interesting dynamic fluxionality.

Abstract
The lowest energy structures for Bn species (n = 6 to 23 except for 20) observed experimentally in the gas phase with a mass spectrometer are planar networks of boron triangles. Such networks are considered to consist of trigonal planar sp2-hybridized boron atoms having perpendicular p orbitals similar to the carbon atoms in benzene and other planar aromatic hydrocarbons. Electron bookkeeping for reasonable chemical bonding topologies of wheel-like structures such as B@Bn-1 (n = 6-9) leads to two π-electrons for B6 and B7+ similar to the cyclopropenyl cation and six π-electrons for B82- and B9- similar to benzene. Related chemical bonding topology analyses for low-energy oval B10 and B11- structures as well as for larger planar boron triangle networks with 12, 13, and 14 boron atoms suggest six π-electrons in such structures. Planar networks of boron triangles having 16-19 boron atoms are shown to be systems with 10 π-electrons similar to naphthalene. Similarly, low-energy planar B22 and B23- structures are shown to be 4 π-electron systems 1analogous to linear anthracene and angular phenanthrene, respectively. Intermediate B15- and B21- systems are shown to be systems with 4k rather than 4k + 2 π-electrons with 8 and 12 π-electrons, respectively. Structures based on planar networks of boron triangles are strongly energetically disfavored for B20 relative to a nonplanar decagonal antiprism structure with ideal D10d symmetry.

Abstract
Photoelectron spectroscopy combined with quantum chemistry has been a powerful approach to elucidate the structures and bonding of size-selected boron clusters (Bn-), revealing a prevalent planar world that laid the foundation for borophenes. Investigations of metal-doped boron clusters not only lead to novel structures but also provide important information about the metal-boron bonds that are critical to understanding the properties of boride materials. The current review focuses on recent advances in transition-metal-doped boron clusters, including the discoveries of metal-boron multiple bonds and metal-doped novel aromatic boron clusters. The study of the RhB- and RhB2O- clusters led to the discovery of the first quadruple bond between boron and a transition-metal atom, whereas a metal-boron triple bond was found in ReB2O- and IrB2O-. The ReB4- cluster was shown to be the first metallaborocycle with Möbius aromaticity, and the planar ReB6- cluster was found to exhibit aromaticity analogous to metallabenzenes. Expected final online publication date for the Annual Review of Physical Chemistry, Volume 73 is April 2022. Please see http://www.annualreviews.org/page/journal/pubdates for revised estimates.

Abstract
In the last decades, experimental techniques in conjunction with theoretical analyses have revealed the surprising structural diversity of boron clusters. Although the 2D to 3D transition thresholds are well-established, there is no certainty about the factors that determine the geometry adopted by these systems. The structural transformation induced by doping usually yields a minimum energy structure with a boron skeleton entirely different from that of the bare cluster. This review summarizes those clusters no larger than 40 boron atoms where one or two dopants show a radical transformation of the structure. Although the structures of these systems are not easy to predict, they often adopt familiar shapes such as umbrella-like, wheel, tubular, and cages in various cases.

Abstract
The ability of two anions to interact with one another is tested in the context of pairs of TrX4- homodimers, where Tr represents any of the triel atoms B, Al, Ga, In, or Tl, and X refers to a halogen substituent F, Cl, or Br. None of these pairs engage in a stable complex in the gas phase, but the situation reverses in water where the two monomers are held together by Tr⋯X triel bonds, complemented by stabilizing interactions between X atoms. Some of these bonds are quite strong, notably those involving TrF4-, with interaction energies surpassing 30 kcal mol-1. Others are very much weaker, with scarcely exothermic binding energies. The highly repulsive electrostatic interactions are counteracted by large polarization energies.

Abstract
Periodoannulene molecules and ions CxIxq in planar geometry offer examples of systems with the potential for outer σ and inner π ring-current double aromaticity, given a sufficient overlap of tangential pσ-orbital manifolds on the large atoms of the outer cycle. Previous theoretical work indicated concentric diatropic currents in the dication C6I62+. Ab initio ipsocentric calculations support an account in terms of frontier-orbital selection rules for current contributions in C6I62+ (and radical C6I6+, implicated in recent experimental work on the oxidation of periodobenzene). A σ/π analogue of the annulene-within-an-annulene model is applied here to periodo systems based on cyclooctatetraene. Model species C8I8q with charges q = 0, +1, +2, +4, -2 and structures constrained to a planar D4h symmetry exhibit maps with all combinations of σ/π con- and counter-rotation, comprising global σ ring currents on the iodine perimeter and central π ring currents on the carbocycle. All can be rationalized by the separate application of the tropicity selection rules to the two subsystems, whether in singlet or triplet states.

Abstract
Neighboring carbon and sandwiched between non-metals and metals in the periodic table of the elements, boron is one of the most chemically and physically versatile elements, and can be manipulated to form dimensionally low planar structures (borophene) with intriguing properties. Herein, the theoretical research and experimental developments in the synthesis of borophene, as well as its excellent properties and application in many fields, are reviewed. The decade-long effort toward understanding the size-dependent structures of boron clusters and the theory-directed synthesis of borophene, including bottom-up approaches based on different foundations, as well as up-down approaches with different exfoliation modes, and the key factors influencing the synthetic effects, are comprehensively summarized. Owing to its excellent chemical, electronic, mechanical, and thermal properties, borophene has shown great promise in supercapacitor, battery, hydrogen-storage, and biomedical applications. Furthermore, borophene nanoplatforms used in various biomedical applications, such as bioimaging, drug delivery, and photonic therapy, are highlighted. Finally, research progress, challenges, and perspectives for the future development of borophene in large-scale production and other prospective applications are discussed.

Abstract
We systematically explore the stability and properties of [B12X11NG]- adducts resulting from the binding of noble gas atoms to anionic [B12X11]- clusters in the gas phase of mass spectrometers. [B12X11]- can be obtained by stripping one X- off the icosahedral closo-dodecaborate dianion [B12X12]2-. We study the binding of the noble gas atoms He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe to [B12X11]- with substituents X = F, Cl, Br, I, and CN. While He cannot be captured by these clusters and Ne only binds at low temperatures, the complexes with the heavier noble gas atoms Ar, Kr, and Xe show appreciable complexation energies and exceed 1 eV at room temperature in the case of [B12(CN)11Xe]-. The predicted B-NG equilibrium distance in the complexes with Ar, Kr, and Xe is only 0.10-0.25 Å longer than the sum of the covalent radii of the two corresponding atoms, and a significant charge transfer from the noble gas atom to the icosahedral B12 cage is observed.

Abstract
Boron displays many unusual structural and bonding properties due to its electron deficiency. Here we show that a boron atom in a boron monoxide cluster (B9O−) exhibits transition-metal-like properties. Temperature-dependent photoelectron spectroscopy provided evidence of the existence of two isomers for B9O−: the main isomer has an adiabatic detachment energy (ADE) of 4.19 eV and a higher energy isomer with an ADE of 3.59 eV. The global minimum of B9O− is found surprisingly to be an umbrella-like structure (C6v, 1A1) and its simulated spectrum agrees well with that of the main isomer observed. A low-lying isomer (Cs, 1A′) consisting of a BO unit bonded to a disk-like B8 cluster agrees well with the 3.59 eV ADE species. The unexpected umbrella-like global minimum of B9O− can be viewed as a central boron atom coordinated by a η7-B7 ligand on one side and a BO ligand on the other side, [(η7-B7)-B-BO]−. The central B atom is found to share its valence electrons with the B7 unit to fulfill double aromaticity, similar to that in half-sandwich [(η7-B7)-Zn-CO]− or [(η7-B7)-Fe(CO)3]− transition-metal complexes. The ability of boron to form a half-sandwich complex with an aromatic ligand, a prototypical property of transition metals, brings out new metallomimetic properties of boron. The global minimum of the B9O− cluster is found to have an umbrella-like structure, where the central B atom exhibits transition-metal-like bonding properties, coordinated by a η7-B7 ligand on one side and a BO ligand on the other.![]()

Abstract
The primary goal of the present article is to provide an unbiased structural confirmation of C2B5-, relying on its available experimental photo-detachment spectra. The study is performed from scratch by optimizing the lowest energy isomers of C2B5- and later, suitable molecular vibronic Hamiltonians are constructed by analyzing the normal modes of these optimized isomers. The Hamiltonians' parameters are evaluated from the fits of the calculated ab initio single point energies using a state of the art multireference configuration (MRCI) level of theory employing a correlation consistent polarized triple zeta (cc-pVTZ) basis set. The state-averaged variant of the MRCI level of theory is also applied to deal with the highly interactive electronic states of both of the isomers. A detailed analysis of the potential energy curves along the totally symmetric vibrational modes is performed to understand the energy modulation between the different electronic states and also to find the energetic locations of the conical intersections. The introduction of the non-symmetric vibrational modes in the Hamiltonians help to understand the impact of non-adiabaticity during energy modulation in the coupled surfaces. Later, both adiabatic and non-adiabatic nuclear dynamics are performed on the electronic states of both of the isomers using the constructed reduced and full-dimensional Hamiltonians. The results of the adiabatic dynamics are used to assign the positions of the simulated photo-detachment bands, while the non-adiabatic dynamics improve the shape of those bands. Finally, we compare our theoretical findings with the available experimental photo-detachment spectra of C2B5- to provide an unbiased structural confirmation of the participating isomers of C2B5- in its photo-detachment spectra.

Abstract
A global search for the lowest energy structure of Co atom-doped boron clusters (CoB19 +, CoB19, and CoB19 - clusters) was conducted. The lowest energy structures of them are remarkably different from those of B20 and CoB18 - clusters. CoB19 + clusters have a bowl-shaped geometry, where the Co atom is at the bottom of the bowl and is coordinated with eight B atoms. The CoB19 cluster presents seven- and eight-membered B rings. The CoB19 - cluster can be viewed as a structure that evolves from a Co-doped boron plane. The coordination number of CoB19 and CoB19 - clusters are 16 and 14, respectively. Several low-lying isomers have quasi-planar structures for the CoB19 - cluster. Some properties including charge transformation and distribution, HOMO-LUMO gaps, molecular orbital distribution, and stability of neutral CoB19 are discussed. CoB19 + and CoB19 - exhibit magnetism with a net moment of 1.0 and 0.94 μB because of odd number of electrons.

Abstract
Elemental boron clusters do not form linear chain or monocyclic ring structures, which is in contrast to carbon. Based on computer global searches and quantum chemical calculations, we report on the viability of a curved boron single chain in binary Be6B7- cluster. The boron motif assumes a bow shape, being anchored on a Be6 prism. Such a motif, which appears to be highly strained in its free-standing form, is exotic in boron-based clusters and nanostructures. Chemically, the cluster is analogous to a "clam-and-pearl-chain" system at the nanoscale (about 1 nm in size), in which a Be6 clam moderately opens its mouth, except that a B7 pearl chain is too large to be encapsulated inside. The picture differs from a three-layered sandwich. This cluster features a hybrid Be2B7 monocyclic ring, which is octagonal in nature and supports double 10π/6σ aromaticity. The number of π bonds substantially surpasses that in bare boron clusters of similar sizes. Two Be3 rings in the prism are also σ aromatic, albeit with effective 1σ/1σ electron-counting only. The unique multifold 1σ/10π/6σ/1σ aromaticity governs the geometry of the Be6B7- cluster, which can also be rationalized using the concept of dual electronic transmutation.

Abstract
Structures and electronic properties of alkali metal atom-doped boron clusters MB12 0/- (M = Li, Na, K) are determined using the CALYPSO method for the global minimum search followed by density functional theory. It is found that the global minima obtained for the neutral clusters correspond to the half-sandwich structure and those of the monoanionic clusters correspond to the boat-shaped structure. The neutral MB12 (M = Li, Na, K) can be considered as a member of the half-sandwich doped B12 clusters, and the geometrical pattern of anion MB12 - (M = Li, Na, K) is a new structure that is different from other doped B12 clusters. Natural population and chemical bonding analyses reveal that the alkali metal atom-doped boron clusters MB12 - are characterized as charge transfer complexes, M+B12 2-, resulting in symmetrically distributed chemical bonds and electrostatic interactions between cationic M+ and boron atoms. The calculated spectra indicate that MB12 0/- (M = Li, Na, K) has meaningful spectral features that can be compared with future experimental data. Our work enriches the varieties of geometrical structures of doped boron clusters and can provide much insight into boron nanomaterials.

Abstract
A genetic search algorithm in conjunction with density functional theory calculations was used to determine the lowest-energy minima of the pure B22 cluster and thereby to evaluate the capacity of its isomers to form endohedrally doped cages with two transition metal atoms M (M = Sc and Ti). An important charge transfer from metal atoms M to the boron cage takes place, stabilizing the endohedral compounds, as predicted with the genetic algorithm implemented. High-level coupled-cluster theory CCSD(T) calculations were carried out to confirm that the structures found are the lowest-energy isomers. For a deeper understanding of the doping effects and related charge transfer, the best structural motif of the B22 isomers was also determined when the bare cages are in anionic states, such as B222- and B224-. It was found that B22 has an appropriate size, geometric shape and electronic state to host the chosen metal atoms and, consequently, to form stable endohedrally doped compounds Ti@B22 (C2v, 4-Ti) and Sc@B22 (C2v, 5-Sc). The chemical bonding was analyzed in order to understand the molecular orbitals that these novel systems form. The cage aromaticity was evaluated by means of the nuclear independent chemical shift (NICS(0)iso) indices, the isochemical shielding surface (ICSSzz), the anisotropy of the current induced density (ACID) maps, and the magnetic ring current Gauge-Including Magnetically Induced Current (GIMIC) method, indicating that aromaticity plays a crucial role in the stabilization of endohedrally doped boron clusters. Finally, the thermodynamic stability of the latter, using parameters derived from density functional theory (DFT), was evaluated. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations were performed to elucidate the stability, at high temperature, of the most stable endohedrally doped boron clusters 4-Ti and 5-Sc.
