[Ln(BH4)2(THF)2] (Ln = Eu, Yb)—A Highly Luminescent Material. Synthesis, Properties, Reactivity, and NMR Studies

Phospholyl and Arsolyl Triple-Decker Sandwich Complexes of Europium(II) and Strontium(II)

To study the influence of heteroatoms on the photophysical properties of divalent Eu and Sr complexes, the synthesis of the phospholyl and arsolyl compounds [{(Dtp)(thf)M}2{μ-η8:η8-C8H8}] (M = EuII and SrII; Dtp = 3,4-dimethyl-2,5-bis(tert-butyl)phospholyl) and [{(Dtas)(thf)M}2{μ-η8:η8-C8H8}] (M = EuII and SrII; Dtas = 3,4-dimethyl-2,5-bis(tert-butyl)arsolyl) is reported. Organometallic compounds of divalent europium with P and As heterocyclic ligands have not been described previously. They were prepared by salt elimination reactions from potassium phospholyl or arsolyl, K2C8H8, and EuI2(thf)2 or SrI2. Photophysical properties were investigated alongside a reference cyclopentadienyl complex with a comparable structure. Critically, the influence of the heteroatom on the photoluminescence emission and excitation and quantum yields of the complexes is significant. Density functional theory calculations were performed to rationalize the ligand influences.

Divalent ansa-Octaphenyllanthanocenes: Synthesis, Structures, and EuII Luminescence

Reductive dimerization of fulvenes using low-valent metal precursors is a straightforward one-step approach to access ethylene-bridged metallocenes. This process has so far mainly been employed with fulvenes carrying one or two substituents in the exocyclic position. In this work, a new synthesis of the unsubstituted exocyclic 1,2,3,4-tetraphenylfulvene (1), its full structural characterization by NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, as well as some photophysical properties and its first use in reductive dimerization are described. This fulvene reacted with different lanthanoid metals in thf to provide the divalent ansa-octaphenylmetallocenes [Ln(C5Ph4CH2)2(thf)n] (Ln = Sm, n = 2 (2); Ln = Eu, n = 2 (3); and Ln = Yb, n = 1 (4)). These complexes were characterized by X-ray diffraction, laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry, and, in the case of Sm and Yb, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, showing the influence of the ansa-bridge on solution and solid-state structures compared to previously reported unbridged metallocenes. Furthermore, the luminescence properties of the Eu ansa complex 3 were studied in solution and the solid state, revealing significant differences with the known octa- and deca-phenyleuropocenes, [Eu(C5Ph4H)2(dme)] and [Eu(C5Ph5)2].

Role of Bis(phosphinimino)methanides as Universal Ligands in the Coordination Sphere of Metals across the Periodic Table

The coordination chemistry of bis(phosphinimino)methanide ligands is widespread and accompanies a large number of metal ions in the periodic table ranging from lithium to neptunium. This unique class of ligand systems show copious coordination chemistry with the main-group, transition, rare-earth, and actinide metals and are considered to be among the most attractive ligand systems to researchers. The bis(phosphinimino)methanide metal complexes offer an extensive range of applications in various fields and have been demonstrated as one of the universal ligand systems to stabilize the metal ions in not only their usual but also their unusual oxidation states. The main-group and transition metal chemistry using bis(phosphinimino)methanides as ligands was last updated almost a decade ago. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of various state-of-the-art bis(phosphinimino)methanide-supported metal complexes by dealing with their synthesis, characterization, reactivity, and catalytic studies which were not included in the last critical reviews.

[(thf)5Ln(Ge9{Si(SiMe3)3}2)] (Ln = Eu, Sm, Yb): Capping Metalloid Germanium Cluster with Lanthanides

We report the synthesis of three neutral complexes with different coordination modes of a di-silylated metalloid germanium cluster to divalent lanthanides [(thf)₅Ln(ηⁿ-Ge₉(Hyp)₂)] (Ln = Yb (1, n = 1); Eu (2, n = 2, 3), Sm (3, n = 2, 3); Hyp = Si(SiMe₃)₃) by the salt metathesis of LnI₂ with K₂[Ge₉(Hyp)₂] in THF. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In thf solution, the formation of contact or solvate-separated ion pairs depending on the concentration is assumed. Compound 2 exhibits a blue luminescence typical for Eu²⁺. The solid-state magnetic measurements of compounds 2 and 3 confirm the presence of divalent europium and samarium, respectively.

Rare Earth Complexes of Europium(II) and Substituted Bis(pyrazolyl)borates with High Photoluminescence Efficiency

Rare earth europium(II) complexes based on d-f transition luminescence have characteristics of broad emission spectra, tunable emission colors and short excited state lifetimes, showing great potential in display, lighting and other fields. In this work, four complexes of Eu(II) and bis(pyrazolyl)borate ligands, where pyrazolyl stands for pyrazolyl, 3-methylpyrazolyl, 3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl or 3-trifluoromethylpyrazole, were designed and synthesized. Due to the varied steric hindrance of the ligands, different numbers of solvent molecules (tetrahydrofuran) are participated to saturate the coordination structure. These complexes showed blue-green to yellow emissions with maximum wavelength in the range of 490-560 nm, and short excited state lifetimes of 30-540 ns. Among them, the highest photoluminescence quantum yield can reach 100%. In addition, when the complexes were heated under vacuum or nitrogen atmosphere, they finally transformed into the complexes of Eu(II) and corresponding tri(pyrazolyl)borate ligands and sublimated away.

Rare Earth Starting Materials and Methodologies for Synthetic Chemistry

The number of rare earth (RE) starting materials used in synthesis is staggering, ranging from simple binary metal-halide salts to borohydrides and "designer reagents" such as alkyl and organoaluminate complexes. This review collates the most important starting materials used in RE synthetic chemistry, including essential information on their preparations and uses in modern synthetic methodologies. The review is divided by starting material category and supporting ligands (i.e., metals as synthetic precursors, halides, borohydrides, nitrogen donors, oxygen donors, triflates, and organometallic reagents), and in each section relevant synthetic methodologies and applications are discussed.

Complex Metal Borohydrides: From Laboratory Oddities to Prime Candidates in Energy Storage Applications

Despite being the lightest element in the periodic table, hydrogen poses many risks regarding its production, storage, and transport, but it is also the one element promising pollution-free energy for the planet, energy reliability, and sustainability. Development of such novel materials conveying a hydrogen source face stringent scrutiny from both a scientific and a safety point of view: they are required to have a high hydrogen wt.% storage capacity, must store hydrogen in a safe manner (i.e., by chemically binding it), and should exhibit controlled, and preferably rapid, absorption–desorption kinetics. Even the most advanced composites today face the difficult task of overcoming the harsh re-hydrogenation conditions (elevated temperature, high hydrogen pressure). Traditionally, the most utilized materials have been RMH (reactive metal hydrides) and complex metal borohydrides M(BH₄)_x (M: main group or transition metal; x: valence of M), often along with metal amides or various additives serving as catalysts (Pd²⁺, Ti⁴⁺ etc.). Through destabilization (kinetic or thermodynamic), M(BH₄)_x can effectively lower their dehydrogenation enthalpy, providing for a faster reaction occurring at a lower temperature onset. The present review summarizes the recent scientific results on various metal borohydrides, aiming to present the current state-of-the-art on such hydrogen storage materials, while trying to analyze the pros and cons of each material regarding its thermodynamic and kinetic behavior in hydrogenation studies.

Toward Opto-Structural Correlation to Investigate Luminescence Thermometry in an Organometallic Eu(II) Complex

Lanthanide-based luminescent materials have unique properties and are well-studied for many potential applications. In particular, the characteristic 5d → 4f emission of divalent lanthanide ions such as Eu^II allows for tunability of the emissive properties via modulation of the coordination environment. We report the synthesis and photoluminescence investigation of pentamethylcyclopentadienyleuropium(II) tetrahydroborate bis(tetrahydrofuran) dimer (1), the first example of an organometallic, discrete molecular Eu^II band-shift luminescence thermometer. Complex 1 exhibits an absolute sensitivity of 8.2 cm^-1 K^-1 at 320 K, the highest thus far observed for a lanthanide-based band-shift thermometer. Opto-structural correlation via variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction and fluorescence spectroscopy allows rationalization of the remarkable thermometric luminescence of complex 1 and reveals the significant potential of molecular Eu^II compounds in luminescence thermometry.

Systematic tuning of the emission colors and redox potential of Eu(ii)-containing cryptates by changing the N/O ratio of cryptands

The λmax, excited-state lifetimes, and the anodic peak potential of Eu2+/Eu3+ for Eu(ii)-containing cryptates depend linearly on the number of N atoms.

Luminescence thermochromism in novel mixed Eu(II)-Cu(I) iodide

A new mixed Eu(II)-Cu(I) iodide [Eu(DME)₄][Cu₂I₄] (1) was synthesized by the reaction of an organosulphide salt of Eu(II) and CuI in DME media. X-ray analysis revealed that 1 is an ate-complex consisting of Eu(DME)₄ dications and tetraiododicuprate dianions. Upon UV light excitation (λ = 365 nm), the compound exhibits intense double-peaked photoluminescence (PL) at 445 and 500 nm. The relative intensity of these peaks changes dramatically when the temperature changes in the range of 180-250 K. To understand the nature of the found PL thermochromism, the structure and time-resolved PL of 1 were studied at various temperatures. The time-resolved PL studies of 1 at various temperatures revealed the presence of two luminescent centers which are excited by the capture of an electron from the conduction band. The ratio of intensities at 445 and 500 nm (R = I₄₄₅/I₅₀₀) in the PL spectra of 1 changes by almost two orders of magnitude and the relative sensitivity S (S = (∂R/∂T)/R) exceeds 5% per K in the range of 190-245 K that makes this compound a promising luminescent thermometer for the range where ammonia exists in a liquid state.

Trends in the Series of Ammine Rare-Earth-Metal Borohydrides: Relating Structural and Thermal Properties

Ammine metal borohydrides display extreme structural and compositional diversity and show potential applications for solid-state hydrogen and ammonia storage and as solid-state electrolytes. Thirty-two new compounds are reported in this work, and trends in the full series of ammine rare-earth-metal borohydrides are discussed. The majority of the rare-earth metals (RE) form trivalent RE(BH₄)₃·xNH₃ (x = 7-1) compounds, which possess an intriguing crystal chemistry changing with the number of ammonia ligands, varying from structures built from complex ions (x = 5-7), to molecular structures (x = 3, 4), one-dimensional chains (x = 2), and structures built from two-dimensional layers (x = 1). Divalent RE(BH₄)₂·xNH₃ (x = 4, 2, 1) compounds are observed for RE²⁺ = Sm, Eu, Yb, with structures varying from molecular structures (x = 4) to two-dimensional layered (x = 2, 1) and three-dimensional structures (Yb(BH₄)₂·NH₃). The crystal structure and composition of the compounds depend on the volume of the rare-earth ion. In all structures, NH₃ coordinates to the metal, while BH₄^- has a more flexible coordination and is observed as a bridging and terminal ligand and as a counterion. RE(BH₄)₃·xNH₃ (x = 7-5, 4) releases NH₃ stepwise during thermal treatment, while mainly H₂ is released for x ≤ 3. In contrast, only NH₃ is released from RE(BH₄)₂·xNH₃ due to the lower charge density on the RE²⁺ ion and higher stability of RE(BH₄)₂. The thermal stability of RE(BH₄)₃·xNH₃ increase with increasing cation charge density for x = 5, 7, while it decreases for x = 4, 6. For x = 3, the thermal stability decreases with increasing charge density, due to the destabilization of the BH₄^- group, making it more reactive toward NH₃. This research provides a large number of novel compounds and new insight into trends in the crystal chemistry of ammine metal borohydrides and reveals a correlation between the local metal coordination and the thermal stability.

Neutron Scattering Investigations of the Global and Local Structures of Ammine Yttrium Borohydrides

Complex metal hydrides are a fascinating and continuously expanding class of materials with many properties relevant for solid-state hydrogen and ammonia storage and solid-state electrolytes. The crystal structures are often investigated using powder X-ray diffraction (PXD), which can be ambiguous. Here, we revisit the crystal structure of Y(11BD4)3·3ND3 with the use of neutron diffraction, which, in comparison to previous PXD studies, provides accurate information about the D positions in the compound. Upon cooling to 10 K, the compound underwent a polymorphic transition, and a new monoclinic low-temperature polymorph denoted as α-Y(11BD4)3·3ND3 was discovered. Furthermore, the series of Y(11BH4)3·xNH3 (x = 0, 3, and 7) were also investigated with inelastic neutron scattering and infrared spectroscopy techniques, which provided information of the local coordination environment of the 11BH4- and NH3 groups and unique insights into the hydrogen dynamics. Partial deuteration using ND3 in Y(11BH4)3·xND3 (x = 3 and 7) allowed for an unambiguous assignment of the vibrational bands corresponding to the NH3 and 11BH4- in Y(11BH4)3·xNH3, due to the much larger neutron scattering cross section of H compared to D. The vibrational spectra of Y(11BH4)3·xNH3 could roughly be divided into three regions: (i) below 55 meV, containing mainly 11BH4- librational motions, (ii) 55-130 meV, containing mainly NH3 librational motions, and (iii) above 130 meV, containing 11B-H and N-H bending and stretching motions.

Synthesis, Crystal Structures and Thermal Properties of Ammine Barium Borohydrides

Ammine metal borohydrides show large compositional and structural diversity, and have been proposed as candidates for solid-state ammonia and hydrogen storage as well as fast cationic conductors. Here, we report the synthesis method of ammine barium borohydrides, Ba(BH4)2·xNH3 (x = 1, 2). The two new compounds were investigated with time-resolved temperature-varied in situ synchrotron radiation powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy and photographic analysis. The compound Ba(BH4)2·2NH3 crystallizes in an orthorhombic unit cell with space group symmetry Pnc2, and is isostructural to Sr(BH4)2·2NH3, forming octahedral [Ba(NH3)2(BH4)4] complexes, which are connected into a two-dimensional layered structure, where the layers are interconnected by dihydrogen bonds, N–Hδ+⋯−δH–B. A new structure type is observed for Ba(BH4)2·NH3, which crystallizes in an orthorhombic unit cell with space group symmetry P212121, forming a three-dimensional framework structure of [Ba(NH3)(BH4)6] complexes. The structure is built from distorted hexagonal chains, where NH3 groups form dihydrogen bonds to the nearby BH4−-groups within the chain. Ba(BH4)2·2NH3 is unstable at room temperature and releases NH3 in two subsequent endothermic reactions with maxima at 49 and 117 °C, eventually reforming Ba(BH4)2. We demonstrate that the thermal stability and composition of the gas release for the ammine alkaline earth metal borohydrides can be correlated to the charge density of the metal cation, but are also influenced by other effects.

Structural Diversity and Trends in Properties of an Array of Hydrogen-Rich Ammonium Metal Borohydrides

Metal borohydrides are a fascinating and continuously expanding class of materials, showing promising applications within many different fields of research. This study presents 17 derivatives of the hydrogen-rich ammonium borohydride, NH₄BH₄, which all exhibit high gravimetric hydrogen densities (>9.2 wt % of H₂). A detailed insight into the crystal structures combining X-ray diffraction and density functional theory calculations exposes an intriguing structural variety ranging from three-dimensional (3D) frameworks, 2D-layered, and 1D-chainlike structures to structures built from isolated complex anions, in all cases containing NH₄⁺ countercations. Dihydrogen interactions between complex NH₄⁺ and BH₄^- ions contribute to the structural diversity and flexibility, while inducing an inherent instability facilitating hydrogen release. The thermal stability of the ammonium metal borohydrides, as a function of a range of structural properties, is analyzed in detail. The Pauling electronegativity of the metal, the structural dimensionality, the dihydrogen bond length, the relative amount of NH₄⁺ to BH₄^-, and the nearest coordination sphere of NH₄⁺ are among the most important factors. Hydrogen release usually occurs in three steps, involving new intermediate compounds, observed as crystalline, polymeric, and amorphous materials. This research provides new opportunities for the design and tailoring of novel functional materials with interesting properties.

Systematic Tuning of the Optical Properties of Discrete Complexes of EuII in Solution Using Counterions and Solvents

We describe a systematic study of the influence of halides and solvents on the optical properties of Eu^II-containing complexes in solution starting from well-defined crystalline precursors. Anionic halides, chloride and bromide, blue-shift the spectroscopic properties of Eu^II, whereas neutral ligands, methanol and acetonitrile, cause a red shift. This system provides evidence that Eu^II has a stronger affinity for chloride, and to some extent bromide, relative to acetonitrile but not methanol. We also describe a simple procedure using an ion-exchange resin for the exchange of iodide counterions to hexafluorophosphate. These findings are a step toward designing ligands that can tune the optical properties of Eu^II-containing complexes for solution-based applications.

A Review of the MSCA ITN ECOSTORE—Novel Complex Metal Hydrides for Efficient and Compact Storage of Renewable Energy as Hydrogen and Electricity

Hydrogen as an energy carrier is very versatile in energy storage applications. Developments in novel, sustainable technologies towards a CO2-free society are needed and the exploration of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) as well as solid-state hydrogen storage applications based on metal hydrides can provide solutions for such technologies. However, there are still many technical challenges for both hydrogen storage material and ASSBs related to designing low-cost materials with low-environmental impact. The current materials considered for all-solid-state batteries should have high conductivities for Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+, while Al3+-based compounds are often marginalised due to the lack of suitable electrode and electrolyte materials. In hydrogen storage materials, the sluggish kinetic behaviour of solid-state hydride materials is one of the key constraints that limit their practical uses. Therefore, it is necessary to overcome the kinetic issues of hydride materials before discussing and considering them on the system level. This review summarizes the achievements of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) innovative training network (ITN) ECOSTORE, the aim of which was the investigation of different aspects of (complex) metal hydride materials. Advances in battery and hydrogen storage materials for the efficient and compact storage of renewable energy production are discussed.

Alkaline Earth Metal-Mediated Highly Iso-selective Ring-Opening Polymerization of rac-Lactide

Alkaline earth (Ae) metal complexes of the aminophosphine borane ligand are highly active and iso-selective catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-lactide (LA). The polymerization reactions are well controlled and produce polylactides with molecular weights that are precise and narrowly distributed. Kinetic studies reveal that the ROP of rac-LA catalyzed by all Ae metal complexes had a first-order dependency on LA concentration as well as catalyst concentration. A plausible reaction mechanism for Ae metal complex-mediated ROP of rac-LA is discussed, based on controlled kinetic experiments and molecular chain mobility.

Spectroscopic and Electrochemical Trends in Divalent Lanthanides through Modulation of Coordination Environment

Due to the importance of both visible-light luminescence and lanthanides in modern society, the influence of the ligand environment on complexes of Yb^II were studied and compared with analogous complexes of Eu^II. Four ligands with systematically varied electronic and steric characteristics were used to probe the coordination environment and electronic and redox properties of the corresponding Yb^II-containing complexes. Strong-field nitrogenous donors gave rise to bathochromic shifts, leading to visible-light absorption by Yb^II. Trends in properties across the series of Yb^II-containing complexes were compared to trends reported for the analogous Eu^II-containing complexes, revealing the translatability of coordination environment effects across the divalent lanthanide series. These studies provide valuable information regarding the behavior of small and medium-sized divalent lanthanides outside of the solid state.

Ln(ii) and Ca(ii) NCsp3N pincer type diarylmethanido complexes – promising catalysts for C–C and C–E (E = Si, P, N, S) bond formation

The first examples of Ln(ii) (Ln = Yb, Sm) and Ca [NC_sp3N] pincer type diarylmethanido complexes were synthesized and successfully used as efficient and selective precatalyst for intermolecular C–C and C–E bond formation.

Preparation of star-shaped functionalized polylactides by metal porphyrin complexes as both catalysts and cocatalysts

Several aluminum porphyrin complexes as catalysts and a copper porphyrin complex as a cocatalyst were prepared. These complexes were characterized by 1H NMR and elemental analysis. These complexes are used for L-lactide polymerization. The kinetic data of the polymerization using complex 2 as catalyst revealed that the polymeric rates were first-ordered in both the monomer and catalyst. There is a linear relationship between lactide conversion and the number-averaged molecular weight of PLA.

Trends in Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Thermal and Magnetic Properties of Rare-Earth Metal Borohydrides

Synthesis, crystal structures, and thermal and magnetic properties of the complete series of halide-free rare-earth (RE) metal borohydrides are presented. A new synthesis method provides high yield and high purity products. Fifteen new metal borohydride structures are reported. The trends in crystal structures, thermal behavior, and magnetic properties for the entire series of RE(BH₄) _x are compared and discussed. The RE(BH₄) _x possess a very rich crystal chemistry, dependent on the oxidation state and the ionic size of the rare-earth ion. Due to the lanthanide contraction, there is a significant decrease in the volume of the RE³⁺-ion with increasing atomic number, which correlates linearly with the unit cell volume of the α- and β-RE(BH₄)₃ polymorphs and the solvated complexes α-RE(BH₄)₃·S(CH₃)₂. The thermal analysis reveals a one-step decomposition pathway in the temperature range from 247 to 277 °C for all RE(BH₄)₃ except Lu(BH₄)₃, which follows a three-step decomposition pathway. In contrast, the RE(BH₄)₂ decompose at higher temperatures in the range 306 to 390 °C due to lower charge density on the rare-earth ion. The RE(BH₄)₃ show increasing stability with increasing Pauling electronegativity, which contradicts other main group and transition metal borohydrides. The majority of the compounds follow Curie-Weiss paramagnetic behavior down to 3 K with weak antiferromagnetic interactions and magnetic moments in accord with those of isolated 4f ions. Some of the RE(BH₄) _x display varying degrees of temperature-dependent magnetic moments due to low-lying excited stated induced by crystal field effects. Additionally, a weak antiferromagnetic ordering is observed in Gd(BH₄)₃, indicating superexchange through a borohydride group.

Synthesis of biodegradable and biorenewable polylactides initiated by aluminum complexes bearing m-xylylenediamine derivatives via the ring-opening polymerization of lactides

Aluminum complexes derived from m-xylylenediamine were synthesized and investigated as initiators for l-lactide and rac-lactide polymerization.

Access to divalent lanthanide NHC complexes by redox-transmetallation from silver and CO2 insertion reactions

Through a redox-transmetallation procedure, divalent NHC-LnII (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene; Ln = Eu, Yb) complexes were obtained from the corresponding NHC-AgI. The lability of the NHC-LnII bond was investigated and treatment with CO2 led to insertion reactions without oxidation of the metal centre. The EuII complex [EuI2(IMes)(THF)3] (IMes = 1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene) exhibits photoluminescence with a quantum yield reaching 53%.

Intensely Photoluminescent Diamidophosphines of the Alkaline-Earth Metals, Aluminum, and Zinc

The positively charged and weakly polarizable s-block metals commonly do not usually have phosphine ligands in molecular complexes. Herein, we report mono- and dinuclear small diamidophosphine complexes of the alkaline-earth metals Mg, Ca, and Sr, which were prepared from simple precursors and a phosphine-functionalized diamine ligand N,N-bis(2-(diphenyl-phosphino)phenyl)ethane-1,2-diamine (PNHNHP). The alkaline-earth metal based complexes [(PNNP)Mg]₂ and [(PNNP)M(thf)₃ ] (M=Ca, Sr), exhibit unusual coordination spheres and show bright fluorescence, both in the solid state and in solution. For comparison, the even stronger luminescent Al and Zn complexes [(PNNP)Zn]₂ and [(PNNP)AlCl] were prepared. Emission lifetimes in the nanosecond range and high photoluminescence quantum yields up to 93 % are observed at room temperature.

From Metal Hydrides to Metal Borohydrides

Commencing from metal hydrides, versatile synthesis, purification, and desolvation approaches are presented for a wide range of metal borohydrides and their solvates. An optimized and generalized synthesis method is provided for 11 different metal borohydrides, M(BH₄) _n, (M = Li, Na, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Y, Nd, Sm, Gd, Yb), providing controlled access to more than 15 different polymorphs and in excess of 20 metal borohydride solvate complexes. Commercially unavailable metal hydrides (MH _n, M = Sr, Ba, Y, Nd, Sm, Gd, Yb) are synthesized utilizing high pressure hydrogenation. For synthesis of metal borohydrides, all hydrides are mechanochemically activated prior to reaction with dimethylsulfide borane. A purification process is devised, alongside a complementary desolvation process for solvate complexes, yielding high purity products. An array of polymorphically pure metal borohydrides are synthesized in this manner, supporting the general applicability of this method. Additionally, new metal borohydrides, α-, α'- β-, γ-Yb(BH₄)₂, α-Nd(BH₄)₃ and new solvates Sr(BH₄)₂·1THF, Sm(BH₄)₂·1THF, Yb(BH₄)₂· xTHF, x = 1 or 2, Nd(BH₄)₃·1Me₂S, Nd(BH₄)₃·1.5THF, Sm(BH₄)₃·1.5THF and Yb(BH₄)₃· xMe₂S (" x" = unspecified), are presented here. Synthesis conditions are optimized individually for each metal, providing insight into reactivity and mechanistic concerns. The reaction follows a nucleophilic addition/hydride-transfer mechanism. Therefore, the reaction is most efficient for ionic and polar-covalent metal hydrides. The presented synthetic approaches are widely applicable, as demonstrated by permitting facile access to a large number of materials and by performing a scale-up synthesis of LiBH₄.

Synthesis, structure, and polymorphic transitions of praseodymium(iii) and neodymium(iii) borohydride, Pr(BH4)3 and Nd(BH4)3

In this work, praseodymium(iii) borohydride, Pr(BH4)3, and an isotopically enriched analogue, Pr(11BD4)3, are prepared by a new route via a solvate complex, Pr(11BD4)3S(CH3)2. Nd(BH4)3 was synthesized using the same method and the structures, polymorphic transformations, and thermal stabilities of these compounds are investigated in detail. α-Pr(BH4)3 and α-Nd(BH4)3 are isostructural with cubic unit cells (Pa3[combining macron]) stable at room temperature (RT) and a unit cell volume per formula unit (V/Z) of 180.1 and 175.8 Å3, respectively. Heating α-Pr(BH4)3 to T ∼ 190 °C, p(Ar) = 1 bar, introduces a transition to a rhombohedral polymorph, r-Pr(BH4)3 (R3[combining macron]c) with a smaller unit cell volume and a denser structure, V/Z = 156.06 Å3. A similar transition was not observed for Nd(BH4)3. However, heat treatment of α-Pr(BH4)3, at T ∼ 190 °C, p(H2) = 40 bar and α-Nd(BH4)3, at T ∼ 270 °C, p(H2) = 98 bar facilitates reversible formation of another three cubic polymorph, denoted as β, β' and β''-RE(BH4)3 (Fm3[combining macron]c). Moreover, the transition β- to β'- to β''- is considered a rare example of stepwise negative thermal expansion. For Pr(BH4)3, ∼2/3 of the sample takes this route of transformation whereas in argon only ∼5 wt%, and the remaining transforms directly from α- to r-Pr(BH4)3. The β-polymorphs are porous with V/Z = 172.4 and 172.7 Å3 for β''-RE(BH4)3, RE = Pr or Nd, respectively, and are stabilized by the elevated hydrogen pressures. The polymorphic transitions occur due to rotation of RE(BH4)6 octahedra without breaking or forming chemical bonds. Structural DFT optimization reveals the decreasing stability of α-Pr(BH4)3 > β-Pr(BH4)3 > r-Pr(BH4)3.

Elucidation of the Formation Mechanisms of the Octahydrotriborate Anion (B3H8-) through the Nucleophilicity of the B-H Bond

Boron compounds are well-known electrophiles. Much less known are their nucleophilic properties. By recognition of the nucleophilicity of the B-H bond, the formation mechanism of octahydrotriborate (B₃H₈^-) was elucidated on the bases of both experimental and computational investigations. Two possible routes from the reaction of BH₄^- and THF·BH₃ to B₃H₈^- were proposed, both involving the B₂H₆ and BH₄^- intermediates. The two pathways consist of a set of complicated intermediates, which can convert to each other reversibly at room temperature and can be represented by a reaction circle. Only under reflux can the B₂H₆ and BH₄^- intermediates be converted to B₂H₅^- and BH₃(H₂) via a high energy barrier, from which H₂ elimination occurs to yield the B₃H₈^- final product. The formation of B₂H₆ from THF·BH₃ by nucleophilic substitution of the B-H bond was captured and identified, and the reaction of B₂H₆ with BH₄^- to produce B₃H₈^- was confirmed experimentally. On the bases of the formation mechanisms of B₃H₈^-, we have developed a facile synthetic method for MB₃H₈ (M = Li and Na) in high yields by directly reacting the corresponding MBH₄ salts with THF·BH₃. In the new synthetic method for MB₃H₈, no electron carriers are needed, allowing convenient preparation of MB₃H₈ in large scales and paving the way for their wide applications.

Synthesis, structure and properties of bimetallic sodium rare-earth (RE) borohydrides, NaRE(BH4)4, RE = Ce, Pr, Er or Gd

Formation, stability and properties of new metal borohydrides within RE(BH₄)₃-NaBH₄, RE = Ce, Pr, Er or Gd is investigated. Three new bimetallic sodium rare-earth borohydrides, NaCe(BH₄)₄, NaPr(BH₄)₄ and NaEr(BH₄)₄ are formed based on an addition reaction between NaBH₄ and halide free rare-earth metal borohydrides RE(BH₄)₃, RE = Ce, Pr, Er. All the new compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic crystal system. NaCe(BH₄)₄ has unit cell parameters of a = 6.8028(5), b = 17.5181(13), c = 7.2841(5) Å and space group Pbcn. NaPr(BH₄)₄ is isostructural to NaCe(BH₄)₄ with unit cell parameters of a = 6.7617(2), b = 17.4678(7), c = 7.2522(3) Å. NaEr(BH₄)₄ crystallizes in space group Cmcm with unit cell parameters of a = 8.5379(2), b = 12.1570(4), c = 9.1652(3) Å. The structural relationships, also to the known RE(BH₄)₃, are discussed in detail and related to the stability and synthesis conditions. Heat treatment of NaBH₄-Gd(BH₄)₃ mixture forms an unstable amorphous phase, which decomposes after one day at RT. NaCe(BH₄)₄ and NaPr(BH₄)₄ show reversible hydrogen storage capacity of 1.65 and 1.04 wt% in the fourth H₂ release, whereas that of NaEr(BH₄)₄ continuously decreases. This is mainly assigned to formation of metal hydrides and possibly slower formation of sodium borohydride. The dehydrogenated state clearly contains rare-earth metal borides, which stabilize boron in the dehydrogenated state.

A study on enhancing the quantum yield and antimicrobial activity of Pr(iii) by varying the coordination environment

Praseodymium forms complexes easily with nitrogen and oxygen donor pyrazolines and also forms mixed ligand complexes with these pyrazolines and sulfur donor thio ligands such as dithiocarbamates and xanthates. These newly synthesized complexes have been characterized using elemental analysis, FTIR, TGA, SEM, TEM, PXRD and UV-visible spectral measurements. The isotopic studies were performed using DART mass spectrometry. The luminescent properties of these types of complexes were studied using a fluorescence spectrophotometer. The antimicrobial behavior of these praseodymium complexes was studied thoroughly during the present research.

The influence of LiH on the rehydrogenation behavior of halide free rare earth (RE) borohydrides (RE = Pr, Er)

Rare earth (RE) metal borohydrides are receiving immense consideration as possible hydrogen storage materials and solid-state Li-ion conductors. In this study, halide free Er(BH4)3 and Pr(BH4)3 have been successfully synthesized for the first time by the combination of mechanochemical milling and/or wet chemistry. Rietveld refinement of Er(BH4)3 confirmed the formation of two different Er(BH4)3 polymorphs: α-Er(BH4)3 with space group Pa3[combining macron], a = 10.76796(5) Å, and β-Er(BH4)3 in Pm3[combining macron]m with a = 5.4664(1) Å. A variety of Pr(BH4)3 phases were found after extraction with diethyl ether: α-Pr(BH4)3 in Pa3[combining macron] with a = 11.2465(1) Å, β-Pr(BH4)3 in Pm3[combining macron]m with a = 5.716(2) Å and LiPr(BH4)3Cl in I4[combining macron]3m, a = 11.5468(3) Å. Almost phase pure α-Pr(BH4)3 in Pa3[combining macron] with a = 11.2473(2) Å was also synthesized. The thermal decomposition of Er(BH4)3 and Pr(BH4)3 proceeded without the formation of crystalline products. Rehydrogenation, as such, was not successful. However, addition of LiH promoted the rehydrogenation of RE hydride phases and LiBH4 from the decomposed RE(BH4)3 samples.

From M(BH4)3 (M = La, Ce) Borohydride Frameworks to Controllable Synthesis of Porous Hydrides and Ion Conductors

Rare earth metal borohydrides show a number of interesting properties, e.g., Li ion conductivity and luminescence, and the series of materials is well explored. However, previous attempts to obtain M(BH₄)₃ (M = La, Ce) by reacting MCl₃ and LiBH₄ yielded LiM(BH₄)₃Cl. Here, a synthetic approach is presented, which allows the isolation of M(BH₄)₃ (M = La, Ce) via formation of intermediate complexes with dimethyl sulfide. The cubic c-Ce(BH₄)₃ (Fm3̅c) is isostructural to high-temperature polymorphs of A(BH₄)₃ (A = Y, Sm, Er, Yb) borohydrides. The larger size of the Ce³⁺ ion makes the empty void in the open ReO₃-type framework structure potentially accessible to small guest molecules like H₂. Another new rhombohedral polymorph, r-M(BH₄)₃ (M = La, Ce), is a closed form of the framework, prone to stacking faults. The new compounds M(BH₄)₃ (M = La, Ce) can be combined with LiCl in an addition reaction to form LiM(BH₄)₃Cl also known as Li₄[M₄(BH₄)₁₂Cl₄]; the latter contains the unique tetranuclear cluster [M₄(BH₄)₁₂Cl₄]^4- and shows high Li-ion conductivity. This reaction pathway opens a way to synthesize a series of A₄[M₄(BH₄)₁₂X₄] (M = La, Ce) compounds with different anions (X) and metal ions (A) and potentially high ion conductivity.

Unique Eu(II) Coordination Environments with a Janus Cryptand

Two new Eu(II)-containing cryptates were prepared with a new nitrogenous cryptand functionalized with three benzo groups. The introduction of three aromatic rings into the ligand backbone imparts lopsided geometrical features on the resulting Eu(II) coordination environments. In both complexes, the interactions between Eu and the amines on the aromatic side of the molecule are weaker than those on the nonaromatic side, resulting in one discrete unit with two distinct faces. One of the new complexes is, to the best of our knowledge, the first direct observation of a bis-aquo Eu(II)-containing cryptate with two nonadjacent inner-sphere water molecules. In addition to solid-phase structure, the electronic UV-visible and emission spectra of the new complexes were studied in acetonitrile. Experimental results show that the decreased Lewis basicity of the aromatic face hypsochromically shifts absorbances and emissions from a structurally related compound without the benzo groups.

Cerium Photosensitizers: Structure-Function Relationships and Applications in Photocatalytic Aryl Coupling Reactions

Two complete mixed-ligand series of luminescent Ce(III) complexes with the general formulas [(Me3Si)2NC(N(i)Pr)2]xCe(III)[N(SiMe3)2]3-x (x = 0, 1-N; x = 1, 2-N, x = 2, 3-N; x = 3, 4) and [(Me3Si)2NC(N(i)Pr)2]xCe(III)(OAr)3-x (x = 0, 1-OAr; x = 1, 2-OAr, x = 2, 3-OAr; x = 3, 4) were developed, featuring photoluminescence quantum yields up to 0.81(2) and lifetimes to 117(1) ns. Although the 4f → 5d absorptive transitions for these complexes were all found at ca. 420 nm, their emission bands exhibited large Stokes shifts with maxima occurring at 553 nm for 1-N, 518 nm for 2-N, 508 nm for 3-N, and 459 nm for 4, featuring yellow, lime-green, green, and blue light, respectively. Combined time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations and spectroscopic studies suggested that the long-lived (2)D excited states of these complexes corresponded to singly occupied 5dz(2) orbitals. The observed difference in the Stokes shifts was attributed to the relaxation of excited states through vibrational processes facilitated by the ligands. The photochemistry of the sterically congested complex 4 was demonstrated by C-C bond forming reaction between 4-fluoroiodobenzene and benzene through an outer sphere electron transfer pathway, which expands the capabilities of cerium photosensitizers beyond our previous results that demonstrated inner sphere halogen atom abstraction reactivity by 1-N.
