Asymmetric Noncovalent Synthesis of Self-Assembled One-Dimensional Stacks by a Chiral Supramolecular Auxiliary Approach

Chiral Solvent-Induced Homochiral Hierarchical Molecular Assemblies at the Liquid/Solid Interface

We herein investigate the formation of homochiral hierarchical self-assembled molecular networks (SAMNs) via chirality induction by the coadsorption of a chiral solvent at the liquid/graphite interface by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). In a mixture of achiral solvents, 1-hexanoic acid, and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, an achiral dehydrobenzo[12]annulene (DBA) derivative with three alkoxy and three hydroxy groups in an alternating manner forms chiral hierarchical triangular cluster structures through dynamic self-sorting. Enantiomorphous domains appear in equal probability. On the other hand, in chiral 2-methyl-1-hexanoic acid as a solvent, this molecule produces (i) homochiral small triangular clusters at a low solute concentration, (ii) a chirality-biased hierarchical structure consisting of triangular cluster structures with different cluster sizes at a medium concentration, and (iii) a dense structure with no chirality bias at a high concentration. We attribute the concentration-dependent degree of the chirality transmission to the number of coadsorbed solvent molecules in the SAMNs and to the difference in nucleus structure and size in the initial stage of the SAMN formation.

Heparin binding induced supramolecular chirality into the self-assembly of perylenediimide bolaamphiphile

Chirality is one of the hallmarks of biomolecules. Herein, we utilize heparin, a chiral biomolecule and potent drug, to induce chiral organization into the assembly of an achiral molecule. Polyanionic heparin binds with a dicationic perylenediimide derivative to induce supramolecular helical organization in aqueous medium as well as in a highly competitive cell culture medium.

Chirality Induction and Memory of Pillar[4]arene[1]quinone Derivatives in Visible-Light Range

Pillar[4]arene[1]quinone derivatives (PQXs) were synthesized by the oxidation of pillar[5]arenes, which exhibited notable charge transfer (CT) transitions at approximately 485 nm. Successful chiral resolution of two pairs of enantiomeric conformers was achieved. Despite reduced binding affinity, PQXs demonstrated slower racemization kinetics. Visible-light chiroptical induction with a significant dissymmetry factor was attained by complexing PQXs with a chiral guest. The induced enantiomeric excess could be maintained through competitive binding with an achiral guest, offering a promising strategy for chiral sensing and memory.

Chiral Supramolecular Assemblies: Controllable Construction and Biological Activity

Chiral supramolecular assemblies with helical structures (e. g., proteins with α-helix, DNA with double helix, collagen with triple-helix) as the central structure motifs in biological systems play a crucial role in various physiological activities of living organisms. Variations in chiral structure can cause many abnormal physiological activities. To gain insight into the construction, structural transition, and related physiological functions of these complex helix in natural systems, it is necessary to fabricate artificial supramolecular assemblies with controllable helix orientation as research platform. This review discusses recent advances in chiral supramolecular assembly, including the precise construction and regulation of assembled chiral nanostructures with tunable chirality. Chiral structure-dependent biological activities, including cell proliferation, cell differentiation, antibacterial activity and tissue regeneration, are also discussed. This review not only contributes to further understanding of the importance of chirality in the physiological environment, but also plays an important role in the development of chiral biomedical materials for the treatment of diseases (e. g., tissue engineering regeneration, stem cell transplantation therapy).

Kinetic Controlled Chirality Transfer and Induction in 2D Hydrogen-Bonding Assemblies of Glycylglycine on Au(111)

Chirality transfer is of vital importance that dominates the structure and functionality of biological systems and living matters. External physical stimulations, e.g. polarized light and mechanical forces, can trigger the chirality symmetry breaking, leading to the appearance of the enantiomeric entities created from a chiral self-assembly of achiral molecule. Here, several 2D assemblies with different chirality, synthesized on Au(111) surface by using achiral building blocks - glycylglycine (digly), the simplest polypeptide are reported. By delicately tuning the kinetic factors, i.e., one-step slow/rapid deposition, or stepwise slow deposition with mild annealing, achiral square hydrogen-bond organic frameworks (HOF), homochiral rhombic HOF and racemic rectangular assembly are achieved, respectively. Chirality induction and related symmetry broken in assemblies are introduced by the handedness (H-bond configurations in principle) of the assembled motifs and then amplified to the entire assemblies via the interaction between motifs. The results show that the chirality transfer and induction of biological assemblies can be tuned by altering the kinetic factors instead of applying external forces, which may offer an in-depth understanding and practical approach to peptide chiral assembly on the surfaces and can further facilitate the design of desired complex biomolecular superstructures.

Light-triggered Modulation of Supramolecular Chirality

Dynamically controlling the supramolecular chirality is of great significance in development of functional chiral materials, which is thus essential for the specific function implementation. As an external energy input, light is remote and accurate for modulating chiral assemblies. In non-polarized light control, some photochemically reactive units (e. g., azobenzene, ɑ-cyanostilbene, spiropyran, anthracene) or photo-induced directionally rotating molecular motors were designed to drive chiral transfer or amplification. Besides, photoexcitation induced assembly based physical approach was also explored recently to regulate supramolecular chirality beyond photochemical reactions. In addition, circularly polarized light was applied to induce asymmetric arrangement of organic molecules and asymmetric photochemical synthesis of inorganic metallic nanostructures, in which both wavelength and handedness of circularly polarized light have effects on the induced supramolecular chirality. Although light-triggered chiral assemblies have been widely applied in photoelectric materials, biomedical fields, soft actuator, chiral catalysis and chiral sensing, there is a lack of systematic review on this topic. In this review, we summarized the recent studies and perspectives in the constructions and applications of light-responsive chiral assembled systems, aiming to provide better knowledge for the development of multifunctional chiral nanomaterials.

Full-Color and Switchable Circularly Polarized Light from a Macroscopic Chiral Dendritic Film through a Solid-State Supramolecular Assembly

Chiral materials displaying chirality across multiple length scales have attracted increasing interest due to their potential applications in diverse fields. Herein, we report an efficient approach for the construction of macroscopic crystal dendrites with hierarchical chirality based on an in situ solid assembly in a block copolymer film. Chiral fluorescent crystals are formed by enantiopure d-/l-dibenzoyl tartaric acid and pyrenecarboxylic acid in a poly(1,4-butadiene)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) film. The chiro-optical activity of the crystalline dendrites can be greatly amplified in the absorption and scattering regions and goes along with the dimension of dendrites. Notably, the chiral dendrites exhibited strong circularly polarized luminescence emission with a high dissymmetric factor (0.03). The enhancement of the quantum yield of the chiral film was up to 28%, which was 14 times higher that of the corresponding fluorescent molecules. The circularly polarized emission bands of the films can be fine-tuned by contriving the emissive bands of fluorescent molecules. More importantly, the chiral signals are able to be wiped when the fluorescent group photodimerizes under UV irradiation. This work provides an efficient way to develop functional materials through solid self-assembly.

Synthesis, Self-Assembly, and Cell Responses of Aromatic IKVAV Peptide Amphiphiles

Synthetic bioactive aromatic peptide amphiphiles have been recognized as key elements of emerging biomedical strategies due to their biocompatibility, design flexibility, and functionality. Inspired by natural proteins, we synthesized two supramolecular materials of phenyl-capped Ile-Lys-Val-Ala-Val (Ben-IKVAV) and perfluorophenyl-capped Ile-Lys-Val-Ala-Val (PFB-IKVAV). We employed UV-vis absorption, fluorescence, circular dichroism, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy to examine the driving force in the self-assembly of the newly discovered materials. It was found that both compounds exhibited ordered π-π interactions and secondary structures, especially PFB-IKVAV. The cytotoxicity of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) and cell differentiation studies was also performed. In addition, the immunofluorescent staining for neuronal-specific markers of MAP2 was 4.6 times (neural induction medium in the presence of PFB-IKVAV) that of the neural induction medium (control) on day 7. From analyzing the expression of neuronal-specific markers in hMSCs, it can be concluded that PFB-IKVAV may be a potential supramolecular biomaterial for biomedical applications.

Exciton interactions in helical crystals of a hydrogen-bonded eumelanin monomer

Eumelanin, a naturally occurring group of heterogeneous polymers/aggregates providing photoprotection to living organisms, consist of 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI) and 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (DHICA) building blocks. Despite their prevalence in the animal world, the structure and therefore the mechanism behind the photoprotective broadband absorption and non-radiative decay of eumelanin remain largely unknown. As a small step towards solving the incessant mystery, DHI is crystallized in a non-protic solvent environment to obtain DHI crystals having a helical packing motif. The present approach reflects the solitary directional effect of hydrogen bonds between the DHI chromophores for generating the crystalline assembly and filters out any involvement of the surrounding solvent environment. The DHI single crystals having an atypical chiral packing motif (P2₁2₁2₁ Sohncke space group) incorporate enantiomeric zig-zag helical stacks arranged in a herringbone fashion with respect to each other. Each of the zig-zag helical stacks originates from a bifurcated hydrogen bonding interaction between the hydroxyl substituents in adjacent DHI chromophores which act as the backbone structure for the helical assembly. Fragment-based excited state analysis performed on the DHI crystalline assembly demonstrates exciton delocalization along the DHI units that connect each enantiomeric helical stack while, within each stack, the excitons remain localized. Fascinatingly, over the time evolution for generation of single-crystals of the DHI-monomer, mesoscopic double-helical crystals are formed, possibly attributed to the presence of covalently connected DHI trimers in chloroform solution. The oligomeric DHI (in line with the chemical disorder model) along with the characteristic crystalline packing observed for DHI provides insights into the broadband absorption feature exhibited by the chromophore.

Single crystals of DHI monomer, a eumelanin precursor, adopt an atypical chiral packing arrangement incorporating enantiomeric zig-zag helical stacks while its covalently connected DHI trimer forms double-helical crystals in the mesoscopic scale.

Functional Chirality: From Small Molecules to Supramolecular Assemblies

Many structures in nature look symmetric, but this is not completely accurate, because absolute symmetry is close to death. Chirality (handedness) is one form of living asymmetry. Chirality has been extensively investigated at different levels. Many rules were coined in attempts made for many decades to have control over the selection of handedness that seems to easily occur in nature. It is certain that if good control is realized on chirality, the roads will be ultimately open towards numerous developments in pharmaceutical, technological, and industrial applications. This tutorial review presents a report on chirality from single molecules to supramolecular assemblies. The realized functions are still in their infancy and have been scarcely converted into actual applications. This review provides an overview for starters in the chirality field of research on concepts, common methodologies, and outstanding accomplishments. It starts with an introductory section on the definitions and classifications of chirality at the different levels of molecular complexity, followed by highlighting the importance of chirality in biological systems and the different means of realizing chirality and its inversion in solid and solution-based systems at molecular and supramolecular levels. Chirality-relevant important findings and (bio-)technological applications are also reported accordingly.

The More the Slower: Self-Inhibition in Supramolecular Chirality Induction, Memory, Erasure, and Reversion

Self-inhibition has been observed widely in hierarchical biochemical processes but has yet to be demonstrated in pure molecular physical rather than chemical or biological processes. Herein, we report an unprecedented example of self-inhibition during the supramolecular chirality induction, memory, erasure, and inversion processes of pillar[5]arene (P[5]) derivatives. The addition of chiral alanine ethyl ester to bulky substituent-modified P[5]s led to time-dependent chirality induction due to the shift in the equilibrium of the S_P and R_P conformers P[5]. Intriguingly, more chiral inducers led to more intensive final chiroptical properties but lower chiral induction rates. Thus, the chiral inducer plays the role of both activator and inhibitor. Such self-inhibition essentially arises from kinetics manipulation of three tandem equilibria. Moreover, the chiroptical properties could be memorized by replacing the chiral inducer with an achiral competitive binder, and the chiroptical signal could be erased and reversed by an antipodal chiral inducer, which also showed the self-inhibition property.

The helical supramolecular assembly of oligopyridylamide foldamers in aqueous media can be guided by adenosine diphosphates

A metal-free and achiral tri-pyridylamide foldamer, DM 11, containing a critical naphthalimide side chain self-assembles in a left-handed helical manner in the presence of chiral adenosine phosphates, under physiological conditions. Surprisingly, a very high degree of helicity in the foldamer assemblies was observed with ADP compared to other nucleoside phosphates, including ATP.

Free Charge Carriers in Homo-Sorted π-Stacks of Donor-Acceptor Conjugates

Inspired by the high photoconversion efficiency observed in natural light-harvesting systems, the hierarchical organization of molecular building blocks has gained impetus in the past few decades. Particularly, the molecular arrangement and packing in the active layer of organic solar cells (OSCs) have garnered significant attention due to the decisive role of the nature of donor/acceptor (D/A) heterojunctions in charge carrier generation and ultimately the power conversion efficiency. This review focuses on the recent developments in emergent optoelectronic properties exhibited by self-sorted donor-on-donor/acceptor-on-acceptor arrangement of covalently linked D-A systems, highlighting the ultrafast excited state dynamics of charge transfer and transport. Segregated organization of donors and acceptors promotes the delocalization of photoinduced charges among the stacks, engendering an enhanced charge separation lifetime and percolation pathways with ambipolar conductivity and charge carrier yield. Covalently linking donors and acceptors ensure a sufficient D-A interface and interchromophoric electronic coupling as required for faster charge separation while providing better control over their supramolecular assemblies. The design strategies to attain D-A conjugate assemblies with optimal charge carrier generation efficiency, the scope of their application compared to state-of-the-art OSCs, current challenges, and future opportunities are discussed in the review. An integrated overview of rational design approaches derived from the comprehension of underlying photoinduced processes can pave the way toward superior optoelectronic devices and bring in new possibilities to the avenue of functional supramolecular architectures.

Supramolecular fibrous gels with helical pitch tunable by polarity of alcohol solvents

A sugar-based, low-molecular-weight gelator 16AG, can gelatinize primary alcohols by forming supramolecular fibers. We obtained non-helical, tape-like fibers in methanol and ethanol but helical fibers in alcohols with at least three carbons. The pitch of the helical fibers became shorter with increasing carbon number.

Induction of Chirality in Supramolecular Coassemblies Built from Achiral Precursors

The emergence, transference, amplification, and memory of chiroptical activity in supramolecular assemblies, including circularly polarized absorbance and circularly polarized luminescence, remain significant challenges. Herein, an achiral pyridine-substituted coumarin derivative and chiral additives can coassemble into helical nanostructures with fine chiroptical activity via subtle hydrogen-bonding interactions. The resulting supramolecular assemblies remain optically active even after the removal of chiral additives, demonstrating supramolecular chirality can be remembered in the assemblies. More importantly, the removed chiral elements can be reused to achieve continuous circulation and amplification of chirality. This work presents insight into the emergence, transference, amplification, and memory of chirality in a supramolecular assembly system and could be applied to the manufacturing of chiroptical materials.

Chirality in porous self-assembled monolayer networks at liquid/solid interfaces: induction, reversion, recognition and transfer

Chirality in two dimensions (2D) has attracted increasing attention with regard to interesting fundamental aspects as well as potential applications. This article reports several aspects of supramolecular chirality control as exemplified by self-assembled monolayer networks (SAMNs) formed by a class of chiral building blocks consisting of a triangular conjugated core and alkoxy chains on the periphery. It highlights 2D chirality induction phenomena through a classic "sergeants-and-soldiers" mechanism, in which the inducer is incorporated into a network component, as well as through a "supramolecular host-guest" mechanism, in which the inducer is entrapped in the porous space, leading to counterintuitive chirality reversal. Stereochemical control can be extended to three dimensions too, based on interlayer hydrogen bonding of the same class of building blocks bearing hydroxy groups, exhibiting diastereospecific bilayer formation at both single molecule level and supramolecular level arising from orientation between the top and bottom layers. Finally, we showcase that homochiral SAMNs can also be used as templates for the grafting of in situ generated aryl radicals, by covalent bond formation to the basal graphitic surface, thereby yielding topologically chiral functionalized graphite, and thus extending the potential of chiral SAMNs.

Supramolecular chirality in the crystals of mononuclear and polymeric cobalt(ii) complexes with enantiopure and racemic N-thiophosphorylated thioureas

The control of stereochemistry in Co(ii) complexes was provided by additional pyridine and pyrazine ligands. 1D and 2D supramolecular homochiral arrangements in racemic crystals of mononuclear complexes are transferred to their polymeric counterparts.

Supramolecular Chiral Aggregates Exhibiting Nonlinear CD-ee Dependence

Although a linear relationship between the optical activity (normally the CD signal) and the enantiomeric excess (ee) of chiral auxiliaries has been the most commonly observed dependence in dynamic supramolecular helical aggregates, positive nonlinear CD-ee dependence, known as the "majority-rules effect" (MRE), indicative of chiral amplification, has also been well documented and to some extent understood. In sharp contrast, the negative nonlinear CD-ee dependence has been much less reported and is not well understood. Here, the state of the art of both the positive and negative nonlinear CD-ee dependence in noncovalently bound supramolecular helical aggregates is summarized, with the hope that the vast examples of supramolecular aggregates showing positive nonlinear dependence, in terms of the methods of investigations, variations in the structure of the building block (single species or multiple species), and theoretical modeling using the mismatch penalty energy and helix reversal penalty energy, would help to guide the design of building blocks to form aggregates showing negative nonlinear dependence, and thus to understand the mechanisms. The potential applications of those functional supramolecular aggregates are also discussed.

Helical Nanostructures with Circularly Polarized Luminescence from the Multicomponent Assembly of π-Conjugated N-terminal Amino Acids

Self-assembled structures with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have attracted great attention in recent years. π-conjugated N-terminal amino acids with chiral amino acid residues and luminophores are capable of forming self-assembled structures at hierarchical levels, whereby chirality can be transferred to the macroscopic scale with easily modulated CPL properties. Due to the presence of multiple noncovalent binding sites, including hydrogen bonding and aromatic interactions, π-conjugated N-terminal amino acids are emerging core candidates for incorporation into multicomponent self-assembled architectures, accomplishing rational control over supramolecular chirality as well as showing rich chiroptical properties. In this Minireview, we provide a brief summary of multiple-component coassembled systems comprising π-conjugated N-terminal amino acids, small organic species and metal ions. The synthesis of helical structures and manipulation of supramolecular chirality by controlling the self-assembled species is introduced, and the CPL properties of multiple-component π-conjugated N-terminal amino acids are also briefly summarized.

Tuning Achiral to Chiral Supramolecular Helical Superstructures

The design and synthesis of achiral organic functional molecules which can assemble into a chiral with selective handedness in the absence of chiral substances is an important in understanding the role chirality plays within these systems. In this review, we described general approaches towards supramolecular chiral molecules the synthesis and self-assembly of achiral molecule to active chiral molecules to investigate controlled supramolecular chiral nanostructures with their photoluminescent properties for rapid, sensitive and selective detection of analytes of choice. Various small molecules have been discussed for achiral to chiral along with induction of chirality and controlled chiral helical structures in detail. We discussed few examples where stimuli used to control the chirality such as temperature, pH etc. Finally, we will also explore on the photo responsive helicity properties of the aggregation induced emission active molecule such as tetraphenylethene conjugates.

Holding of planar chirality of pillar[5]arene by kinetic trapping using host-guest interactions with achiral guest solvents

We report a solvent-dependent switching and holding of planar chirality of pillar[5]arene with stereogenic carbons at both rims by host-guest complexation with achiral guest solvents. The planar chirality could be held for a given length of time at 25 °C in long linear guest solvents by kinetic trapping through host-guest complexation. The kinetic trapping worked at 25 °C, but not at 60 °C, thus a planar-chiral inversion using kinetic trapping based on host-guest complexation in the long linear solvents was demonstrated.

Controlling Supramolecular Chirality in Peptide-π-Peptide Networks by Variation of the Alkyl Spacer Length

Self-assembled supramolecular organic materials with π-functionalities are of great interest because of their applications as biocompatible nanoelectronics. A detailed understanding of molecular parameters to modulate the formation of hierarchical structures can inform design principles for materials with engineered optical and electronic properties. In this work, we combine molecular-level characterization techniques with all-atom molecular simulations to investigate the subtle relationship between the chemical structure of peptide-π-peptide molecules and the emergent supramolecular chirality of their spontaneously self-assembled nanoaggregates. We demonstrate through circular dichroism measurements that we can modulate the chirality by incorporating alkyl spacers of various lengths in between the peptides and thienylene-phenylene π-system chromophores: even numbers of alkyl carbons in the spacer units (0, 2) induce M-type helical character whereas odd numbers (1, 3) induce P-type. Corroborating molecular dynamics simulations and explicating machine learning analysis techniques identify hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic packing to be the principal discriminants of the observed chirality switches. Our results present a molecular-level design rule to engineer chirality into optically and electronically active nanoaggregates of these peptidic building blocks by exploiting systematic variations in the alkyl spacer length.

Adenosine Triphosphate Templated Self-Assembly of Cationic Porphyrin into Chiral Double Superhelices and Enzyme-Mediated Disassembly

Self-assembly of small molecules through noncovalent interactions into nanoscale architectures has been extensively studied in supramolecular chemistry. However, it is still challenging to develop a biologically inspired self-assembly system that functions in water with complex structure and dynamics by analogy with those found in nature. Here, we report a new water-soluble cationic porphyrin that undergoes adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-templated self-assembly into right-handed double-helical supramolecular structures. Direct observation of the porphyrin-ATP assembly by transmission electron microscopy has been accomplished. The assemblies consist of superhelical fibers with length greater than 1 μm and width ∼46 nm. The chiral superhelical fibers show reversible disassembly to monomers upon hydrolysis of ATP catalyzed by alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and the nanofibers can be re-formed with subsequent addition of ATP. Moreover, transient self-assembly of a chiral double helix is formed when ALP is present to consume ATP.

Solvent-Induced Supramolecular Assembly of a Peptide-Tetrathiophene-Peptide Conjugate

The assembly of a peptide-tetrathiophene-peptide (PTP) conjugate has been investigated in mixed solvents, which has different polarities by changing the solvent proportions. It was found that PTP can form fibers in THF/hexane solutions with 40–80%v of hexane. The fibers were stable and did not change on time. On the other hand, PTP formed ordered structures in a mixed solution with the water content from 40 to 60%v. For the as-prepared solutions, two nanostructures vesicles and parallelogram sheets were obtained. The parallelogram sheets could transform into vesicles on time. The fibers showed supramolecular chirality, however, there was no Cotton effect for vesicles and parallelogram sheets. UV-vis, FL, XRD, FT-IR, and CD spectra together with SEM, AFM, TEM were used to characterize the nanostructures and properties of the assemblies. Molecular packing mechanism was proposed based on the experimental data.

Guest-mediated chirality transfer in the host–guest complexes of an atropisomeric perylene bisimide cyclophane host

Chirality transfer upon preferential binding of homochiral guests to one stereoisomer of a conformationally equilibrated atropisomeric cyclophane is reported.

Imido-P(v) trianion supported enantiopure neutral tetrahedral Pd(ii) cages

Charge-neutral chiral hosts are attractive due to their ability to recognize a wide range of guest functionalities and support enantioselective processes. However, reports on such charge-neutral cages are very scarce in the literature. Here, we report an enantiomeric pair of tetrahedral Pd(ii) cages built from chiral tris(imido)phosphate trianions and oxalate linkers, which exhibit enantioselective separation capabilities for epichlorohydrin, β-butyrolactone, and 3-methyl- and 3-ethyl cyclopentanone.

The role of aromatic side chains on the supramolecular hydrogelation of naphthalimide/dipeptide conjugates

This study demonstrates the influence of an amino-acid side chain of NI-dipeptides on supramolecular hydrogelation and biocompatibility.

Photocontrolled reversible conversion of a lamellar supramolecular assembly based on cucurbiturils and a naphthalenediimide derivative

Lamellar and helical supramolecular assemblies were constructed using cucurbiturils and a naphthalenediimide derivative. The formation of the lamellar assembly could be reversibly photocontrolled.

Solvent Dielectricity-Modulated Helical Assembly and Morphologic Transformation of Achiral Surfactant-Inorganic Cluster Ionic Complexes

Ionic complexes comprising single/double chain cationic surfactant and Lindqvist-type polyoxomolybdate anionic cluster were used for controlled self-assembly in organic solutions. In the solvent with low dielectric constant the complexes self-assembled into flat ribbon like lamellar aggregations with an inverse bilayer substructure where the cluster located at the middle. Under the condition of increased dielectric constant, the solvent triggered the formation of helical self-assemblies, which finally transformed from helical ribbons to the flower-like assemblies due to the bilayer becoming excessively twisted. The self-assembled morphology and the substructure were characterized by SEM, TEM, and XRD. The solvent dielectricity-controlled morphologic transformations modulated by the variation of electrostatic interactions between organic cations and inorganic polyanions were demonstrated by ¹H NMR and IR spectra. The strategy in this work represents an effective route in targeting the chirality-directed functionalization of inorganic clusters by combining controllable and helical assemblies of achiral polyoxometalate complexes in one system.

Chirality Control and Its Memory at Microphase-Separated Interface of Self-Assembled Chiral Block Copolymers for Nanostructured Chiral Materials

Here, we show the induced chirality of an achiral chromophoric dye as a joint of polylactide-containing chiral block copolymers (BCPs*) driven by self-assembly, giving the achiral dyes preferentially arranged in a one-handed helical array at the microphase-separated interface. This helical arrangement of the achiral dyes can be "memorized" after hydrolysis of the polylactides in the BCPs* and serves as a chiral template for further chirality induction of different achiral dyes, probably through attractive aromatic π-π interactions at the interface, producing nanostructured chiral materials with tunable circular dichroism signals at desired wavelengths.

Structural and Spectroscopic Properties of Assemblies of Self-Replicating Peptide Macrocycles

Self-replication at the molecular level is often seen as essential to the early origins of life. Recently a mechanism of self-replication has been discovered in which replicator self-assembly drives the process. We have studied one of the examples of such self-assembling self-replicating molecules to a high level of structural detail using a combination of computational and spectroscopic techniques. Molecular Dynamics simulations of self-assembled stacks of peptide-derived replicators provide insights into the structural characteristics of the system and serve as the basis for semiempirical calculations of the UV-vis, circular dichroism (CD) and infrared (IR) absorption spectra that reflect the chiral organization and peptide secondary structure of the stacks. Two proposed structural models are tested by comparing calculated spectra to experimental data from electron microscopy, CD and IR spectroscopy, resulting in a better insight into the specific supramolecular interactions that lead to self-replication. Specifically, we find a cooperative self-assembly process in which β-sheet formation leads to well-organized structures, while also the aromatic core of the macrocycles plays an important role in the stability of the resulting fibers.

C-I···π Halogen Bonding Driven Supramolecular Helix of Bilateral N-Amidothioureas Bearing β-Turns

We report the first example of C-I···π halogen bonding driven supramolecular helix in highly dilute solution of micromolar concentration, using alanine based bilateral I-substituted N-amidothioureas that contain helical fragments, the β-turn structures. The halogen bonding interactions afford head-to-tail linkages that help to propagate the helicity of the helical fragments. In support of this action of the halogen bonding, chiral amplification was observed in the supramolecular helix formed in acetonitrile solution. The present finding provides alternative tools in the design of self-assembling macromolecules.

Chirality Synchronization of Hydrogen-Bonded Complexes of Achiral N-Heterocycles

2,4-Diamino-6-phenyl-1,3,5-triazines carrying a single oligo(ethylene oxide) (EO) chain form an optically isotropic mesophase composed of a conglomerate of macroscopic chiral domains with opposite sense of chirality even though the constituent molecules are achiral. This mesophase was proposed to result from the helical packing of hydrogen-bonded triazine aggregates, providing long-range chirality synchronization. The results provide first evidence for macroscopic achiral symmetry breaking upon conglomerate formation in an amorphous isotropic phase formed by hydrogen-bonded associates of simple N-heterocycles that are related to prebiotic molecules.

Supramolecular Helical Systems: Helical Assemblies of Small Molecules, Foldamers, and Polymers with Chiral Amplification and Their Functions

In this review, we describe the recent advances in supramolecular helical assemblies formed from chiral and achiral small molecules, oligomers (foldamers), and helical and nonhelical polymers from the viewpoints of their formations with unique chiral phenomena, such as amplification of chirality during the dynamic helically assembled processes, properties, and specific functionalities, some of which have not been observed in or achieved by biological systems. In addition, a brief historical overview of the helical assemblies of small molecules and remarkable progress in the synthesis of single-stranded and multistranded helical foldamers and polymers, their properties, structures, and functions, mainly since 2009, will also be described.

Stimuli-Directed Helical Chirality Inversion and Bio-Applications

Helical structure is a sophisticated ubiquitous motif found in nature, in artificial polymers, and in supramolecular assemblies from microscopic to macroscopic points of view. Significant progress has been made in the synthesis and structural elucidation of helical polymers, nevertheless, a new direction for helical polymeric materials, is how to design smart systems with controllable helical chirality, and further use them to develop chiral functional materials and promote their applications in biology, biochemistry, medicine, and nanotechnology fields. This review summarizes the recent progress in the development of high-performance systems with tunable helical chirality on receiving external stimuli and discusses advances in their applications as drug delivery vesicles, sensors, molecular switches, and liquid crystals. Challenges and opportunities in this emerging area are also presented in the conclusion.

Complex Chiral Induction Processes at the Solution/Solid Interface

Two-dimensional supramolecular chirality is often achieved by confining molecules against a solid surface. The sergeants-soldiers principle is a popular strategy to fabricate chiral surfaces using predominantly achiral molecules. In this method, achiral molecules (the soldiers) are forced to assemble in a chiral fashion by mixing them with a small percentage of structurally similar chiral molecules (the sergeants). The full complexity of the amplification processes in chiral induction studies is rarely revealed due to the specific experimental conditions used. Here we report the evolution of chirality in mixed supramolecular networks of chiral and achiral dehydrobenzo[12]annulene (DBA) derivatives using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the solution/solid interface. The experiments were carried out in the high sergeants-soldiers mole ratio regime in relatively concentrated solutions. Variation in the sergeants/soldiers composition at a constant solution concentration revealed different mole ratio regimes where either amplification of supramolecular handedness as defined by the sergeant chirality or its reversal was observed. The chiral induction/reversal processes were found to be a convolution of different phenomena occurring at the solution-solid interface namely, structural polymorphism, competitive adsorption and adaptive host-guest recognition. Grasping the full complexity of chiral amplification processes as described here is a stepping-stone toward developing a predictive understanding of chiral amplification processes.

Helical Self-Assembly and Photopolymerization Properties of Achiral Amphiphilic Platinum(II) Diacetylene Complexes of Tridentate 2,6-Bis(1-alkylpyrazol-3-yl)pyridines

Amphiphilic platinum(II) diacetylene complexes of the 2,6-bis(1-butylpyrazol-3-yl)pyridine pincer ligand were designed and synthesized. Helical fibrous nanostructures were obtained through supramolecular assembly of the achiral platinum(II) diacetylene complexes via intermolecular hydrogen bonding, amphiphilic effects, Pt···Pt interactions, and π-π stacking interactions. In situ post-photopolymerization of the diacetylene unit was shown to occur in the preorganized helical fibers.
