Abstract
The μ-carbido complex [WPt(μ-C)Br(CO)2(PPh3)2(Tp*)] (Tp = hydrotris(dimethylpyrazolyl)borate) undergoes substitution of one phosphine ligand with isonitriles to afford complexes [WPt(μ-C)Br(CNR)(CO)2(PPh3)(Tp*)] (R = tBu, C6H3Me2-2,6, C6H2Me3-2,4,6). For aryl but not alkyl isocyanides disubstitution follows to afford [WPt(μ-C)Br(CNR)2(CO)2(Tp*)] (R = C6H2Me2-2,6, C6H2Me3-2,4,6). The bis(isonitrile) derivatives, including [WPt(μ-C)Br(CNtBu)2(CO)2(Tp*)], may also be prepared from the reactions of triangulo-[Pt3(CNR)6] with [W(CBr)(CO)2(Tp*)]. Bis- and tris(dimethylpyrazolyl)borate pro-ligand salts replace the bromide and one phosphine in [WPt(μ-C)Br(CNC6H2Me3)(CO)2(PPh3)(Tp*)] or the bromide and one isonitrile in [WPt(μ-C)Br(CNC6H2Me3)2(CO)2(Tp*)] to afford [WPt(μ-C)(CNC6H2Me3)(CO)2(Tp*)(L)] (L = κ2-Tp*, dihydrobis(pyrazolyl)borate). Structural, spectroscopic and computational data for the complexes are discussed to interrogate the nature of the WC-Pt carbido bridge by analogy with a range of other sp-C1 and sp-B1 ligands (CN, CCH, CP, CAs, CSb, CNO, BO, BNH and BCH2).

Abstract
Diboriranides are the smallest conceivable monoanionic aromatic cycles, yet only limited examples have been reported and their reactivity and complexation behavior remain completely unexplored. We report a straightforward synthesis of the first peraryl diboriranide c-(DurB)2 CPh- as its lithium salt in three steps via the corresponding non-classical diborirane from a readily available 1,2-dichlorodiborane(4) (Dur=2,3,5,6-tetramethylphenyl). With the preparation and complete characterization of representative complexes with tin, copper, gold and zinc, we demonstrate the strong preference of the diboriranide for σ-type coordination modes towards main group and transition metal centers under unperturbed retention of the three-membered B2 C-ring's 2e- π-system.

Abstract
The synthesis of well-defined heterometallic complexes remains a frontier challenge in inorganic chemistry. We report an approach that relies on the sequential insertion of electrophilic metal fragments into electron-rich Ru-B bonds of the η2-BB-carboryne complex (POBBOP)Ru(CO)2 [POBBOP = 1,7-OP(iPr)2-m-2,6-dehydrocarborane]. Utilizing this synthetic strategy, bimetallic (POBBOP)(Ru)(CO)2[Pd(PtBu3)] and trimetallic (POBBOP)(Ru)(CO)2[Pd(PtBu3)](CuBr) complexes were selectively prepared. Structural and theoretical analysis of the features of chemical bonding within Ru-B-B-Cu and Ru-B-B-Pd fragments is presented.

Abstract
Synthesis of a series of cationic coinage metal (Au: 2-4, Ag: 5, and Cu: 6) complexes of asymmetric diborenes (1 a, 1 b) is reported. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the metal center interacts unsymmetrically with the B2 moiety and the terminal boron atom exhibits pronounced pyramidal geometry. A computational study shows that in complexes 2-6, the bonding between the B2 units and the metal center is dominated by electrostatic interactions concomitant with non-negligible covalent contributions.

Abstract
A carbene-stabilised neutral boryl radical and a boryl anion are isolated via selective one- and two-electron reduction of a diamidocarbene (DAC) adduct of dibromo(pentafluorophenyl)borane. Both the radical and the anion have been characterised by various spectroscopic techniques in solution, while the structures have been ascertained by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In contrast, the reduction of the analogous cyclic (alkyl)(amino) carbene (CAAC) adduct yields a C-H activation product.

Abstract
In this work, we introduce a novel approach for the selective assembly of heterometallic complexes by unprecedented coordination of coinage metal cations to strained single ruthenium-boron bonds on a surface of icosahedral boron clusters. M(i) cations (M = Cu, Ag, and Au) insert into B-Ru bonds of the (BB)-carboryne complex of ruthenium with the formation of four-membered B-M-Ru-B metalacycles. Results of theoretical calculations suggest that bonding within these metalacycles can be best described as unusual three-center-two-electron B-M···Ru interactions that are isolobal to B-H···Ru borane coordination for M = Cu and Ag, or the pairs of two-center-two electron B-Au and Au-Ru interactions for M = Au. These transformations comprise the first synthetic route to exohedral coinage metal boryl complexes of icosahedral closo-{C2B10} clusters, which feature short Cu-B (2.029(2) Å) and Ag-B (2.182(3) Å) bonds and the shortest Au-B bond (2.027(2) Å) reported to date. The reported heterometallic complexes contain Cu(i) and Au(i) centers in uncharacteristic square-planar coordination environments. These findings pave the way to rational construction of a broader class of multimetallic architectures featuring M-B bonds.

Abstract
Boranes are ubiquitous in synthesis and materials but advancements in their development have been primarily restricted to the geometric energetic minima, trigonal planar complexes. This report discloses a class of boranes with expanded bond angles achieved by taking advantage of the structural rigidity of tridentate pincer ligands. The bonding of these novel boranes is investigated by X-ray crystallography and computationally.

Abstract
The first example of a transition metal (BB)-carboryne complex containing two boron atoms of the icosahedral cage connected to a single exohedral metal center (POBBOP)Ru(CO)2 (POBBOP = 1,7-OP(i-Pr)2-2,6-dehydro-m-carborane) was synthesized by double B-H activation within the strained m-carboranyl pincer framework. Theoretical calculations revealed that the unique three-membered (BB)>Ru metalacycle is formed by two bent B-Ru σ-bonds with the concomitant increase of the bond order between the two metalated boron atoms. The reactivity of the highly strained electron-rich (BB)-carboryne fragment with small molecules was probed by reactions with electrophiles. The carboryne-carboranyl transformations reported herein represent a new mode of cooperative metal-ligand reactivity of boron-based complexes.

Abstract
Boranes have long been known as the archetypal Lewis acids owing to an empty p-orbital on the boron centre. Meanwhile, Lewis basic tricoordinate boranes have been developed in recent years. Here we report the synthesis of an annulated 1,4,2,5-diazadiborinine derivative featuring boron atoms that exhibit both Lewis acidic and basic properties. Experimental and computational studies confirmed that two boron atoms in this molecule are spectroscopically equivalent. Nevertheless, this molecule cleaves C-O, B-H, Si-H and P-H bonds heterolytically, and readily undergoes [4+2] cycloaddition reaction with non-activated unsaturated bonds such as C=O, C=C, C≡C and C≡N bonds. The result, thus, indicates that the indistinguishable boron atoms in 1,4,2,5-diazadiborinine act as both nucleophilic and electrophilic centres, demonstrating ambiphilic nature.

Abstract
Two surprising new outcomes of the reaction of Lewis bases with dihalodiboranes(4) are presented, including sp(2)-sp(3) diboranes in which the Lewis base unit is bound to a highly sterically congested boron atom, and a rearranged double base adduct. The results provide a fuller understanding of the reactivity of diboranes, a poorly-understood class of molecule of critical importance to synthetic organic chemistry.

Abstract
Treatment of an anionic dimanganaborylene complex ([{Cp(CO)2Mn}2B]-) with coinage metal cations stabilized by a very weakly coordinating Lewis base (SMe2) led to the coordination of the incoming metal and subsequent displacement of dimethylsulfide in the formation of hexametalladiborides featuring planar four-membered M2B2 cores (M = Cu, Au) comparable to transition metal clusters constructed around four-membered rings composed solely of coinage metals. The analogies between compounds consisting of B2M2 units and M4 (M = Cu, Au) units speak to the often overlooked metalloid nature of boron. Treatment of one of these compounds (M = Cu) with a Lewis-basic metal fragment (Pt(PCy3)2) led to the formation of a tetrametallaboride featuring two manganese, one copper and one platinum atom, all bound to boron in a geometry not yet seen for this kind of compound. Computational examination suggests that this geometry is the result of d10-d10 dispersion interactions between the copper and platinum fragments.

Abstract
An electron-rich monovalent boron compound is used as a Lewis base to prepare adducts with Group 13 Lewis acids using both its boron and nitrogen sites. The hard Lewis acid AlCl3 binds through a nitrogen atom of the Lewis base, while softer Lewis acids GaX3 (Cl, Br, I) bind at the boron atom. The latter are the first noncluster Lewis adducts between a boron-centered Lewis base and a main-group Lewis acid.

Abstract
Despite the widespread use of organoborane reagents in organic synthesis and catalysis, a major challenge still remains: very few boron-centered nucleophiles exist for the direct construction of B-C bonds. Perhaps the most promising emerging solution to this problem is the use of sp(2)-sp(3) diboranes, in which one boron atom of a conventional diborane(4) is quaternised by either a neutral or anionic nucleophile. These compounds, either isolated or generated in situ, serve as relatively mild and convenient sources of the boryl anion [BR2](-) for use in organic synthesis and have already proven their efficacy in metal-free as well as metal-catalysed borylation reactions. This Feature article documents the history of sp(2)-sp(3) diborane synthesis, their properties and surprising structural variability, and their burgeoning utility in organic synthesis.

Abstract
The reactivity of a tricoordinate organoboron L2PhB: (L = oxazol-2-ylidene) 1 towards metal precursors and its coordination chemistry were comprehensively studied. While the boron center in 1 is reluctant to coordinate to the alkali metals in their trifluoromethanesulfonate salts (MOTf) (M = Li, Na, K), the unprecedented compound 2 containing two L2PhB: units linked by a cyclic Li(OTf)2Li spacer was obtained from the reaction of 1 with LiOTf. Treatment of 1 with group 9 metal complexes [MCl(COD)]2 (M = Rh, Ir) afforded the first zwitterionic rhodium(i)-boronium complex 3 and the iridium(iii)-borane complex 4, respectively. The reaction pathway may involve C-H activation followed by proton migration from the metals to the boron center, demonstrating the first example of the deprotonation of metal hydrides by a basic boron. In the reactions with coinage metals, 1 could act as a two-electron reducing agent towards the metal chlorides MCl (M = Cu, Ag, Au). Meanwhile, the reaction of 1 with gold chloride supported by a N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) produced a heteroleptic cationic gold complex [(L2PhB)Au(NHC)]Cl (6) featuring both carbene and L2PhB: ligands on the gold atom. In contrast, an isolable gold chloride complex (L2PhB)AuCl (8) was obtained by direct complexation between 1 and triphenylphosphine-gold chloride via ligand exchange. X-ray diffraction analysis and computational studies revealed the nature of the B:→Au bonding interaction in complexes 6 and 8. Natural Population Analysis (NPA) and Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis support the strong σ-donating property of the L2PhB: ligand. Moreover, preliminary studies showed that complex 8 can serve as an efficient precatalyst for the addition of X-H (X = N, O, C) to alkynes under ambient conditions, demonstrating the first application of a metal complex featuring a neutral boron-based ligand in catalysis.

Abstract
Despite the synthesis of a boryl anion by Yamashita et al. in 2006, compounds that show boron-centered nucleophilicity are still rare and sought-after synthetic goals. A number of such boryl anions have since been prepared, two of which were reported to react with methyl iodide in apparent nucleophilic substitution reactions. One of these, a borolyl anion based on the borole framework, has now been found to display single-electron-transfer (SET) reactivity in its reaction with triorganotetrel halides, which was confirmed by the isolation of the first neutral borole-based radical. The radical was characterized by elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and EPR spectroscopy, and has implications for the understanding of boron-based nucleophilic behavior and the emergent role of boron radicals in synthesis. This radical reactivity was also exploited in the synthesis of compounds with rare B-Sn and B-Pb bonds, the latter of which was the first isolated and structurally characterized compound with a "noncluster" B-Pb bond.

Abstract
An acidic hydride! Thanks to the presence of a π-acceptor cyclic alkyl amino carbene and of two electron-withdrawing nitrile groups, a borohydride reacts with a base to give a carbene-stabilized boryl anion, which reacts with carbon and metal electrophiles at the boron center.
