Abstract
The construction of organic-inorganic hybrid supramolecular polymers using polyoxometalate (POM) as building block is expected to bring new opportunities to the functionalization of supramolecular polymers and the development of novel POM-based soft materials. Here, by using the orthogonal self-assembly based on host-guest interactions and metal-ligand interactions, we report the in situ construction of a novel POM-based hybrid supramolecular polymer (POM-SP) at the oil-water interface, while the redox and competitive responsiveness can be triggered independently. Moreover, the binding energy of POM-SP at the interface is sufficiently strong so that the assembly of POM-SP jams, allowing the stabilization of liquids in nonequilibrium shapes, offering the possibility of fabricating all-liquid constructs with reconfigurability.

Abstract
Advanced proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are highly desirable in emerging sustainable energy technology. However, the further improvement of commercial perfluorosulfonic acid PEMs represented by Nafion is hindered by the lack of precise modification strategy due to their chemical inertness and low compatibility. Here, we report the robust assembly of polyethylene glycol grafted polyoxometalate amphiphile (GSiW11) into the ionic nanophases of Nafion, which largely enhances the comprehensive performance of Nafion. GSiW11 can coassemble with Nafion through multiple supramolecular interactions and realize a stable immobilization. The incorporation of GSiW11 can increase the whole proton content in the system and induce the hydrated ionic nanophase to form a wide channel for proton transport; meanwhile, GSiW11 can reinforce the Nafion ionic nanophase by noncovalent cross-linking. Based on these synergistic effects, the hybrid PEMs show multiple enhancements in proton conductivity, tensile strength, and fuel cell power density, which are all superior to the pristine Nafion. This work demonstrates the intriguing advantage of molecular nanoclusters as supramolecular enhancers to develop high-performance electrolyte materials.

Abstract
This is a review of atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis as applied to the study of molecular materials. The PDF method is a powerful approach to study short- and intermediate-range order in materials on the nanoscale. It may be obtained from total scattering measurements using X-rays, neutrons, or electrons, and it provides structural details when defects, disorder, or structural ambiguities obscure their elucidation directly in reciprocal space. While its uses in the study of inorganic crystals, glasses, and nanomaterials have been recently highlighted, significant progress has also been made in its application to molecular materials such as carbons, pharmaceuticals, polymers, liquids, coordination compounds, composites, and more. Here, an overview of applications toward a wide variety of molecular compounds (organic and inorganic) and systems with molecular components is presented. We then present pedagogical descriptions and tips for further implementation. Successful utilization of the method requires an interdisciplinary consolidation of material preparation, high quality scattering experimentation, data processing, model formulation, and attentive scrutiny of the results. It is hoped that this article will provide a useful reference to practitioners for PDF applications in a wide realm of molecular sciences, and help new practitioners to get started with this technique.

Abstract
Hybrid structures incorporating different organic and inorganic constituents are emerging as a very promising class of materials since they synergistically combine the complementary and diverse properties of the individual components. Hybrid materials based on polyoxometalate clusters (POMs) are particularly interesting due to their versatile catalytic, redox, electronic, and magnetic properties, yet the controlled incorporation of different clusters into a hybrid structure is challenging and has been scarcely reported. Herein we propose a novel and general strategy for combining multiple types of metal-oxo clusters in a single hybrid molecule. Two novel hybrid POM structures (HPOMs) bis-functionalised with dipentaerythritol (R–POM1–R; R = (OCH2)3CCH2OCH2C(CH2OH)) were synthesised as building-blocks for the formation of heterometallic hybrid triads (POM2–R–POM1–R–POM2). Such a modular approach resulted in the formation of four novel heterometallic hybrids combing the Lindqvist {V6}, Anderson–Evans {XMo6} (X = Cr or Al) and trisubstituted Wells–Dawson {P2V3W15} POM structures. Their formation was confirmed by multinuclear Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), infrared (IR) and UV-Vis spectroscopy, as well as Mass Spectrometry, Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy (DOSY) and elemental analysis. The thermal stability of the hybrids was also examined by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), which showed that the HPOM triads exhibit higher thermal stability than comparable hybrid structures containing only one type of POM. The one-pot synthesis of these novel compounds was achieved in high yields in aqueous and organic media under simple reflux conditions, without the need of any additives, and could be translated to create other hybrid materials based on a variety of metal-oxo cluster building-blocks. A versatile modular approach has been developed for incorporating different metal-oxo nanoclusters with characteristic structures into a single hybrid molecule by covalently linking them with polyol ligands.![]()

Abstract
Modern electrochemical and electronic devices require advanced electrolytes. Liquid crystals have emerged as promising electrolyte candidates due to their good fluidity and long-range order. However, the mesophase of liquid crystals is variable upon heating, which limits their applications as high-temperature electrolytes, e.g., implementing anhydrous proton conduction above 100 °C. Here, we report a highly stable thermotropic liquid-crystalline electrolyte based on the electrostatic self-assembly of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters and zwitterionic polymer ligands. These electrolytes can form a well-ordered mesophase with sub-10 nm POM-based columnar domains, attributed to the dynamic rearrangement of polymer ligands on POM surfaces. Notably, POMs can serve as both electrostatic cross-linkers and high proton conductors, which enable the columnar domains to be high-temperature-stable channels for anhydrous proton conduction. These nanochannels can maintain constant columnar structures in a wide temperature range from 90 to 160 °C. This work demonstrates the unique role of POMs in developing high-performance liquid-crystalline electrolytes, which can provide a new route to design advanced ion transport systems for energy and electronic applications.

Abstract
Within simulations of molecules deposited on a surface we show that neuroevolutionary learning can design particles and time-dependent protocols to promote self-assembly, without input from physical concepts such as thermal equilibrium or mechanical stability and without prior knowledge of candidate or competing structures. The learning algorithm is capable of both directed and exploratory design: it can assemble a material with a user-defined property, or search for novelty in the space of specified order parameters. In the latter mode it explores the space of what can be made, rather than the space of structures that are low in energy but not necessarily kinetically accessible.

Abstract
Self-assembly of polyoxometalates, Ni(ii)/Ag(i) cations and tetra-[5-(mercapto)-1-methyltetrazole]-thiacalix[4]arene (L) yielded three inorganic-organic hybrids, namely, [Ni3L2(CH3OH)6(H2O)4][PMo12O40]2·3CH3OH·2H2O (1), [Ni3L2(CH3OH)6(H2O)4][PW12O40]2·3CH3OH·2H2O (2) and [Ag3L(PMo12O40)] (3). In hybrids (1) and (2), Ni(ii) cations are linked by L ligands to produce layered frameworks, and H bonds among the [PMo12O40]3-/[PW12O40]3- anions and L ligands lengthen the structures to form 3D supramolecular architectures. Hybrid (3) exhibits a 3D architecture, of which Ag(i) cations not only coordinated with the N and O atoms of L ligands and [PMo12O40]3- anions simultaneously, but also connected each other by Ag-Ag interactions. It is worth mentioning that 1 and 3 as recyclable catalysts show excellent heterogeneous catalytic activity in oxidation desulfurization reactions.

Abstract
Polyoxometalates (POMs) represent an important group of metal-oxo nanoclusters, typically comprised of early transition metals in high oxidation states (mainly V, Mo and W). Many plenary POMs exhibit good pH, solvent, thermal and redox stability, which makes them attractive components for the design of covalently integrated hybrid organic-inorganic molecules, herein referred to as hybrid-POMs. Until now, thousands of organic hybrid-POMs have been reported; however, only a small fraction can be further functionalized using other organic molecules or metal cations. This emerging class of 'post-functionalizable' hybrid-POMs constitute a valuable modular platform that permits coupling of POM properties with different organic and metal cation functionalities, thereby expanding the key physicochemical properties that are relevant for application in (photo)catalysis, bioinorganic chemistry and materials science. The post-functionalizable hybrid-POM platforms offer an opportunity to covalently link multi-electron redox responsive POM cores with virtually any (bio)organic molecule or metal cation, generating a wide range of materials with tailored properties. Over the past few years, these materials have been showcased in the preparation of framework materials, functional surfaces, surfactants, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and light harvesting materials, among others. This review article provides an overview on the state of the art in POM post-functionalization and highlights the key design and structural features that permit the discovery of new hybrid-POM platforms. In doing so, we aim to make the subject more comprehensible, both for chemists and for scientists with different materials science backgrounds interested in the applications of hybrid (POM) materials. The review article goes beyond the realms of polyoxometalate chemistry and encompasses emerging research domains such as reticular materials, surfactants, surface functionalization, light harvesting materials, non-linear optics, charge storing materials, and homogeneous acid-base catalysis among others.

Abstract
Hybrids composed of nanoscale inorganic clusters and organic ligands are ideal models for understanding the different attractive forces during the self-assembly processes of complex macromolecules in solution. The counterion-mediated attraction induced by electrostatic interaction from the large, hydrophilic macroionic clusters can compete or cooperate with other types of attractive forces such as hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and cation-π interactions from the organic ligands, consequently determining the solution behaviors of the hybrid molecules including their self-assembly process and the final supramolecular structures. The incorporation of organic ligands also leads to interesting responsive behaviors to external stimuli. Through the manipulation of the hybrid composition, architecture, topology, and solution conditions (e.g., solvent polarity, pH, and temperature), versatile self-assembled morphologies can be achieved, providing new scientific opportunities and potential applications.

Abstract
By appropriate substitution, polyoxometalates (POMs) can be modified to be organic-inorganic supramolecules (OISMs) that are nonaqueous or water soluble and form aggregates in solution. Here, we report a new OISM, (TBA)3POM-PPCT, that can self-assemble to form bilayer vesicles controlled by Eu3+ in nonaqueous solution. Dynamic light scattering, transmission and scanning electron microscopy techniques, and atomic force microscopy clearly demonstrated the controllable formation of stable bilayer vesicles with an average hydrodynamic radius of about 510 nm. Because of the coordination between (TBA)3POM-PPCT and Eu3+, the stable vesicles possess fluorescence, determined by studying fluorescence spectra, and show highly selective response to Cu2+, allowing them to function as an ion-detecting platform to Cu2+.

Abstract
Incorporating the building blocks of nature (e.g., peptides and DNA) into inorganic polyoxometalate (POM) clusters is a promising approach to improve the compatibilities of POMs in biological fields. To extend their biological applications, it is necessary to understand the importance of different non‐covalent interactions during self‐organization. A series of Anderson POM–peptide hybrids have been used as a simple model to demonstrate the role of different interactions in POM–peptide (biomolecules) systems. Regardless of peptide chain length, these hybrids follow similar solution behaviors, forming hollow, spherical supramolecular structures in acetonitrile/water mixed solvents. The incorporation of peptide tails introduces interesting stimuli‐responsive properties to temperature, hybrid concentration, solvent polarity and ionic strength. Unlike the typical bilayer amphiphilic vesicles, they are found to follow the blackberry‐type assemblies of hydrophilic macroions, which are regulated by electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. The formation of electrostatic assemblies before the supramolecular formation is confirmed by ion‐mobility mass spectrometry (IMS‐MS).

Abstract
A large surface area of catalytic sites and low electric resistance are desirable properties for electrocatalysts that lower the overpotential required for electrochemical reactions, such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), in this study. In the presence of polyoxometalate (POM) and triblock copolymer pluronic (P123) as a hybrid soft template, the hydrothermal sulfurization of nickel foam leads to the formation of a hollow microsphere, assembled from the Ni3S2 motif. Sonication for preparing POM+P123 hybrids, while adjusting the POM content, is an effective strategy for synthesizing a Pt-like electrocatalyst with excellent hydrogen evolution efficiency. The reason is that both sonication and optimal POM content can simultaneously enhance the electroactive surface area and electron transfer of the Ni3S2 electrocatalyst. Adopting the optimal conditions, the three-dimensional porous network, composed of Ni3S2 hollow microspheres on the nickel foam, shows that the HER in an alkaline medium requires only 77 mV overpotential for a current density of 10 mA cm-2, with a robust long-term stability during a 25 h test. The performance at a large current density outperforms the current benchmark electrocatalyst (Pt) for HER.

Abstract
A simple method to prepare metal-organic framework (MOF) nanotubes is developed by employing polyoxometalates (POMs) as modulators. The local structure of the MOF nanotubes is investigated combining XANES and EXAFS studies. These nanotubes show both an excellent catalytic performance in the detoxification of sulfur compounds in O2 atmosphere and a remarkable cycling stability as the anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract
X-ray scattering is a structural characterization tool that has impacted diverse fields of study. It is unique in its ability to examine materials in real time and under realistic sample environments, enabling researchers to understand morphology at nanometer and angstrom length scales using complementary small and wide angle X-ray scattering (SAXS, WAXS), respectively. Herein, we focus on the use of SAXS to examine nanoscale particulate systems. We provide a theoretical foundation for X-ray scattering, considering both form factor and structure factor, as well as the use of correlation functions, which may be used to determine a particle's size, size distribution, shape, and organization into hierarchical structures. The theory is expanded upon with contemporary use cases. Both transmission and reflection (grazing incidence) geometries are addressed, as well as the combination of SAXS with other X-ray and non-X-ray characterization tools. We conclude with an examination of several key areas of research where X-ray scattering has played a pivotal role, including in situ nanoparticle synthesis, nanoparticle assembly, and operando studies of catalysts and energy storage materials. Throughout this review we highlight the unique capabilities of X-ray scattering for structural characterization of materials in their native environment.

Abstract
Six new organic-inorganic hybrid compounds based on [XM12O40](4-) (X = heteroatom, M = metal atom), namely [Cu(pic)2][H2XM12O40]·2Hapy·2apy (X = Si, M = W for , X = Ge, M = W for and X = Si, M = Mo for ), [Cu(2,2'-bpy)2][Cu(2,2'-bpy)(H2O)][Cu(pic)2]0.5[XM12O40]·nH2O (X = Si, M = Mo, n = 0.5 for , X = Ge, M = W, n = 1 for ) and [Cu(phen)(H2O)]2[Cu(pic)2][GeW12O40]·2.5H2O () (pic = deprotonated picolinic acid, apy = 2-aminopyridine, 2,2'-bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, phen = phenanthroline), have been synthesized and characterized by IR, UV-Vis, XRD, cyclic voltammetric measurements and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Single crystal X-ray analysis reveals that compounds are isomorphous and isostructural, in which each is based on [H2XM12O40](2-) and [Cu(pic)2]. Compounds and are also isomorphous and isostructural, of which the structures are more interesting than those of compounds . Both structures are constructed from [XM12O40](4-) and metal mixed-organic-ligand complexes. Compound is also constructed from Keggin ions and metal mixed-organic-ligand complexes, which are, however, thoroughly different from those of compounds and . The photodegradation properties of compounds have been analyzed. Compounds also exhibit rapid absorption properties for RhB (Rhodamine B). Detailed analysis of the photodegradation properties of compounds reveals that the molybdate POM has stronger degradation ability for RhB than the tungstate one.
