Superconducting fiber with transition temperature up to 7.43 K in Nb2PdxS5-δ (0.6 < x <1)

Controlling the Superconductivity of Nb2PdxS5 via Reversible Li Intercalation

The Nb2PdxS5 (x ≈ 0.74) superconductor with a Tc of 6.5 K is reduced by the intercalation of lithium in ammonia solution or electrochemically to produce an intercalated phase with expanded lattice parameters. The structure expands by 2% in volume and maintains the C2/m symmetry and rigidity due to the PdS4 units linking the layers. Experimental and computational analysis of the chemically synthesized bulk sample shows that Li occupies triangular prismatic sites between the layers with an occupancy of 0.33(4). This level of intercalation suppresses the superconductivity, with the injection of electrons into the metallic system observed to also reduce the Pauli paramagnetism by ∼40% as the bands are filled to a Fermi level with a lower density of states than in the host material. Deintercalation using iodine partially restores the superconductivity, albeit at a lower Tc of ∼5.5 K and with a smaller volume fraction than in fresh Nb2PdxS5. Electrochemical intercalation reproduces the chemical intercalation product at low Li content (<0.4) and also enables greater reduction, but at higher Li contents (≥0.4) accessed by this route, phase separation occurs with the indication that Li occupies another site.

Magnetic-Field-Induced Re-entrance of Superconductivity in Ta2PdS5 Nanostrips

The motion of Abrikosov vortices is the dominant origin of dissipation in type II superconductors subjected to a magnetic field, which leads to a finite electrical resistance. It is generally believed that the increase in the magnetic field results in the aggravation of energy dissipation through the increase in vortex density. Here, we show a distinctive re-entrance of the dissipationless state in quasi-one-dimensional superconducting Ta₂PdS₅ nanostrips. Utilizing magnetotransport measurements, we unveil a prominent magnetoresistance drop with the increase in the magnetic field below the superconducting transition temperature, manifesting itself as a giant re-entrance to the superconducting phase. Time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau calculations show that this is originated from the suppression of the vortex motion by the increased energy barrier on the edges. Interestingly, both our experiments and simulations demonstrate that this giant re-entrance of superconductivity occurs only in certain geometrical regimes because of the finite size of the vortex.

Signature of quantum Griffiths singularity state in a layered quasi-one-dimensional superconductor

Quantum Griffiths singularity was theoretically proposed to interpret the phenomenon of divergent dynamical exponent in quantum phase transitions. It has been discovered experimentally in three-dimensional (3D) magnetic metal systems and two-dimensional (2D) superconductors. But, whether this state exists in lower dimensional systems remains elusive. Here, we report the signature of quantum Griffiths singularity state in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Ta2PdS5 nanowires. The superconducting critical field shows a strong anisotropic behavior and a violation of the Pauli limit in a parallel magnetic field configuration. Current-voltage measurements exhibit hysteresis loops and a series of multiple voltage steps in transition to the normal state, indicating a quasi-1D nature of the superconductivity. Surprisingly, the nanowire undergoes a superconductor-metal transition when the magnetic field increases. Upon approaching the zero-temperature quantum critical point, the system uncovers the signature of the quantum Griffiths singularity state arising from enhanced quenched disorders, where the dynamical critical exponent becomes diverging rather than being constant.

Evidence for nodal superconductivity in a layered compound Ta4Pd3Te16

We report an investigation of the London penetration depth [Formula: see text] on single crystals of the layered superconductor Ta4Pd3Te16, where the crystal structure has quasi-one-dimensional characteristics. A linear temperature dependence of [Formula: see text] is observed for [Formula: see text], in contrast to the exponential behavior of fully gapped superconductors. This indicates the existence of line nodes in the superconducting energy gap. A detailed analysis shows that the normalized superfluid density [Formula: see text], which is converted from [Formula: see text], can be well described by a multigap scenario, with nodes in one of the superconducting gaps, providing clear evidence for nodal superconductivity in Ta4Pd3Te16.

Multiband Semimetallic Electronic Structure of Superconducting Ta2PdSe5

We report the electronic structure and related properties of the superconductor Ta2PdSe5 as determined from density functional calculations. The Fermi surface has two disconnected sheets, both derived from bands of primarily chalcogenide p states. These are a corrugated hole cylinder and a heavier complex shaped electron sheet. The sheets contain 0.048 holes and a compensating number of electrons per formula unit, making the material a semimetallic superconductor. The results support the presence of two band superconductivity, although a discrepancy in the specific heat is noted. This discrepancy is discussed as a possible consequence of Pd deficiency in samples.

Superconductivity in a layered Ta4Pd3Te16 with PdTe2 chains

Superconductivity in low-dimensional compounds has long attracted much interest. Here we report superconductivity in a low-dimensional ternary telluride Ta4Pd3Te16 in which the repeating layers contain edge-sharing octahedrally coordinated PdTe2 chains along the crystallographic b axis. Measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat on the Ta4Pd3Te16 crystals, grown via a self-flux method, consistently demonstrate bulk superconductivity at 4.6 K. Further analyses of the data indicate significant electron-electron interaction, which allows electronic Cooper pairing in the present system.
