Electronic and chemical properties of a surface-terminated screw dislocation in MgO

High-Entropy CeNbO4+δ-Based Ceramics with Ultrahigh Comprehensive Thermosensitive Performances

Next-generation advanced high-temperature sensors rely heavily on negative temperature coefficient thermosensitive ceramics with low cost, small volume, high sensitivity, and fast response. However, thus far, the enormous challenge of achieving ultrahigh stability and accuracy has become a critical bottleneck restricting the development of thermosensitive ceramics in high-temperature sensor applications. Here, we propose a high-entropy strategy to design a "cation valence self-equilibrium" system in CeNbO4+δ-based ceramics introducing redox couple compensation and ultrahigh density dislocations to solve the problem of temperature-dependent oxygen nonstoichiometry that restricts the performances of high-temperature thermosensitive ceramics. Ferroelastic domains are generated by enhancing the configurational entropy at both A and B sites, resulting in a dramatic increase of dislocation density to >1010 mm-2, which ultimately optimizes the thermosensitive performances. Extreme temperature measurement accuracy with R2 as high as 999.98‰ and RSS as low as 0.011 and high-temperature stability with ΔR/R0 as low as 0.23% after aging at 873 K for 1000 h are realized in high-entropy CeNbO4+δ-based ceramics, indicating a breakthrough in the comprehensive performances of thermosensitive ceramics. This work opens up an effective way to design thermosensitive materials with ultrahigh comprehensive performance to meet the requirements of advanced high-temperature sensors.

Chirality and dislocation effects in single nanostructures probed by whispering gallery modes

Nanostructures such as nanoribbons and -wires are of interest as components for building integrated photonic systems, especially if their basic functionality as dielectric waveguides can be extended by chiroptical phenomena or modifications of their optoelectronic properties by extended defects, such as dislocations. However, conventional optical measurements typically require monodisperse (and chiral) ensembles, and identifying emerging chiral optical activity or dislocation effects in single nanostructures has remained an unmet challenge. Here we show that whispering gallery modes can probe chirality and dislocation effects in single nanowires. Wires of the van der Waals semiconductor germanium(II) sulfide (GeS), obtained by vapor-liquid-solid growth, invariably form as growth spirals around a single screw dislocation that gives rise to a chiral structure and can modify the electronic properties. Cathodoluminescence spectroscopy on single tapered GeS nanowires containing joined dislocated and defect-free segments, augmented by numerical simulations and ab-initio calculations, identifies chiral whispering gallery modes as well as a pronounced modulation of the electronic structure attributed to the screw dislocation. Our results establish chiral light-matter interactions and dislocation-induced electronic modifications in single nanostructures, paving the way for their application in multifunctional photonic architectures.

Multi-scale simulation of proton diffusion in dislocation cores in BaZrO3

Dislocations are important for their effects on the chemical, electrical, magnetic, and transport properties of oxide materials, especially for electrochemical devices such as solid fuel cells and resistive memories, but these effects are still under-studied at the atomic level. We have developed a quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM)-based multiscale simulation program to reveal the diffusion properties of protons on 〈100〉 edge dislocations in BaZrO₃ perovskite oxide. We find that the large free space and the presence of hydrogen bonds in the dislocation core structure lead to significant trapping of protons. The diffusion properties of protons in dislocation cores were investigated, and no evidence of pipeline diffusion was found from the calculated migration energy barriers, which not only did not accelerate ion diffusion but rather decreases the conductivity of ions. The proton diffusion properties of Y-doped BaZrO₃ (BZY), with a dislocation core structure (BZY-D) and with a grain boundary structure (BZY-GB) were also compared. In all three structures, local lattice deformation occupies an essential part in the proton transfer and rotation processes. The change in bond order is calculated and it is found that the interaction with oxygen and Zr ions during proton transfer and rotation controls the energy barrier for local lattice deformation of the O-B-O motion, which affects the proton diffusion in the structure. Our study provides insight into proton diffusion in dislocations in terms of mechanical behavior, elucidates the origin of the energy barrier associated with proton diffusion in dislocations, and provides guidance for the preparation and application of proton conductors.

Ultra-dense dislocations stabilized in high entropy oxide ceramics

Dislocations are commonly present and important in metals but their effects have not been fully recognized in oxide ceramics. The large strain energy raised by the rigid ionic/covalent bonding in oxide ceramics leads to dislocations with low density (∼10⁶ mm⁻²), thermodynamic instability and spatial inhomogeneity. In this paper, we report ultrahigh density (∼10⁹ mm⁻²) of edge dislocations that are uniformly distributed in oxide ceramics with large compositional complexity. We demonstrate the dislocations are progressively and thermodynamically stabilized with increasing complexity of the composition, in which the entropy gain can compensate the strain energy of dislocations. We also find cracks are deflected and bridged with ∼70% enhancement of fracture toughness in the pyrochlore ceramics with multiple valence cations, due to the interaction with enlarged strain field around the immobile dislocations. This research provides a controllable approach to establish ultra-dense dislocations in oxide ceramics, which may open up another dimension to tune their properties.

Dislocation engineering is important for designing structural materials. Here the authors demonstrate that a high-entropy oxide ceramic with a high density of edge dislocations can be stabilized by increasing the compositional complexity, resulting in enhanced fracture toughness.

Rubbing Powders: Direct Spectroscopic Observation of Triboinduced Oxygen Radical Formation in MgO Nanocube Ensembles

Powder compaction-induced surface chemistry in metal oxide nanocrystal ensembles is important for very diverse fields such as triboelectrics, tribocatalysts, surface abrasion, and cold sintering of ceramics. Using a range of spectroscopic techniques, we show that MgO nanocube powder compaction with uniaxial pressures that can be achieved by gentle manual rubbing or pressing (p ≥ 5 MPa) excites energetic electron-hole pairs and generates oxygen radicals at interfacial defect structures. While the identification of paramagnetic O^- radicals and their adsorption complexes with O₂ point to the emergence of hole centers, triboemitted electrons become scavenged by molecular oxygen to convert into adsorbed superoxide anions O₂ ^- as measured by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). By means of complementary UV-photoexcitation experiments, we found that photon energies in the range between 3 and 6 eV produce essentially the same EPR spectroscopic fingerprints and optical absorption features. To provide insights into this effect, we performed density functional theory calculations to explore the energetics of charge separation involving the ionization of low-coordinated anions and surface-adsorbed O₂ ^- radicals at points of contact. For all selected configurations, charge transfer is not spontaneous but requires an additional driving force. We propose that a plausible mechanism for oxygen radical formation is the generation of significant surface potential differences at points of contact under loading as a result of the highly inhomogeneous elastic deformations coupled with the flexoelectric effect.

Defect engineering of oxide perovskites for catalysis and energy storage: synthesis of chemistry and materials science

Oxide perovskites have emerged as an important class of materials with important applications in many technological areas, particularly thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and energy storage. However, their implementation faces numerous challenges that are familiar to the chemist and materials scientist. The present work surveys the state-of-the-art by integrating these two viewpoints, focusing on the critical role that defect engineering plays in the design, fabrication, modification, and application of these materials. An extensive review of experimental and simulation studies of the synthesis and performance of oxide perovskites and devices containing these materials is coupled with exposition of the fundamental and applied aspects of defect equilibria. The aim of this approach is to elucidate how these issues can be integrated in order to shed light on the interpretation of the data and what trajectories are suggested by them. This critical examination has revealed a number of areas in which the review can provide a greater understanding. These include considerations of (1) the nature and formation of solid solutions, (2) site filling and stoichiometry, (3) the rationale for the design of defective oxide perovskites, and (4) the complex mechanisms of charge compensation and charge transfer. The review concludes with some proposed strategies to address the challenges in the future development of oxide perovskites and their applications.

Conceptual Framework for Dislocation-Modified Conductivity in Oxide Ceramics Deconvoluting Mesoscopic Structure, Core, and Space Charge Exemplified for SrTiO3

The introduction of dislocations is a recently proposed strategy to tailor the functional and especially the electrical properties of ceramics. While several works confirm a clear impact of dislocations on electrical conductivity, some studies raise concern in particular when expanding to dislocation arrangements beyond a geometrically tractable bicrystal interface. Moreover, the lack of a complete classification on pertinent dislocation characteristics complicates a systematic discussion and hampers the design of dislocation-modified electrical conductivity. We proceed by mechanically introducing dislocations with three different mesoscopic structures into the model material single-crystal SrTiO₃ and extensively characterizing them from both a mechanical as well as an electrical perspective. As a final result, a deconvolution of mesoscopic structure, core structure, and space charge enables us to obtain the complete picture of the effect of dislocations on functional properties, focusing here on electric properties.

Sono-photocatalytic production of hydrogen by interface modified metal oxide insulators

Dielectric oxide materials are well-known insulators that have many applications in catalysis as well as in device manufacturing industries. However, these dielectric materials cannot be employed directly in photochemical reactions that are initiated by the absorption of UV-Vis photons. Despite their insensitivity to solar energy, dielectric materials can be made sono-photoactive even for low energy IR photons by modifications of the interfacial properties of dielectric materials by noble metals and metal oxides. In this investigation, by way of interface modification of dielectric MgO nanoparticles by Ag metal and Ag₂O nanoparticles, IR photon initiated sono-photocatalytic activity of MgO is reported. The observed photocatalytic activity is found to be the synergic action of both IR light and sonication effect and sonication assisted a multi-step, sub-bandgap excitation of electrons in the MgO is proposed for the observed catalytic activity of Ag/Ag₂O coated MgO nanoparticles. Our investigation reveals that other dielectric materials such as silver coated SiO₂ and Al₂O₃ also exhibit IR active sono-photocatalytic activity.

Location of Trapped Electron Centers in the Bulk of Epitaxial MgO(001) Films Grown on Mo(001) Using in situ W-band Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

We present the first in situ W-band (94-GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of a trapped electron center in thin MgO(001) films. The improved resolution of the high-field EPR experiments proves that the signal originate from a well-defined species present in the bulk of the films, whose projection of the principal g-tensor components onto the (001) plane are oriented along the [110] direction of the MgO lattice. Based on a comparison between the structural properties of the films, knowledge of the ability of bulk defects to trap electrons, and the properties of the EPR signal, it is possible to propose that the paramagnetic species are located at the origin of a screw dislocation in the bulk of the film.

Charging C60 islands with the AFM tip

We show that electrons can be transferred on demand from an AFM tip into single bulk-like C60 islands, which are supported on the insulating NaCl(001) surface. We exemplify this by controlled charge-manipulation experiments conducted in ultrahigh vacuum by noncontact AFM (nc-AFM), electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). KPFM shows a homogeneous contrast at the islands, which is a signature for an equal distribution of the electrons in the T1u band. The charge dissipates during half a day due to an interaction of the charged C60 islands with defects in the near surface region of NaCl. Our results open the perspective in photo-voltaics to study charge attachment, stability and charge exchange with the environment of any C60 bulk-like system.

Segregation of In to dislocations in InGaN

Dislocations are one-dimensional topological defects that occur frequently in functional thin film materials and that are known to degrade the performance of InxGa1-xN-based optoelectronic devices. Here, we show that large local deviations in alloy composition and atomic structure are expected to occur in and around dislocation cores in InxGa(1-x)N alloy thin films. We present energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy data supporting this result. The methods presented here are also widely applicable for predicting composition fluctuations associated with strain fields in other inorganic functional material thin films.
