Equatorially Coordinated Lanthanide Single Ion Magnets

Enhancing the magnetic properties of Dy(III) single-molecule magnets in octahedral coordination symmetry by tuning the equatorial ligands

Conventionally, octahedral (Oh) coordination symmetry of lanthanide centers is not ideal for constructing high-performance single-molecule magnets (SMMs). However, introducing a strong ligand field in the axial direction to increase crystal field splitting can potentially overcome this limitation. Herein, we successfully obtained two dysprosium(III) single-molecule magnets, [Dy(OCtBu3)X2(py)3] (X = Cl (1), I (2), py = pyridine), in Oh coordination symmetry. The two complexes differ only in the coordinating anions on the equatorial plane, yet their magnetic performances are distinctly different. When chloride is replaced by a weaker donor iodide, the energy barrier is dramatically improved from 29 cm-1 (1) to 860 cm-1 (2), highlighting the importance of weakening the transverse ligand field and maximizing the axial ligand field for high-performance SMMs.

One-Pot In Situ Construction of a Highly Stable Acylhydrazone-Derived Dy9 Cluster with Photodynamic Sterilization Property

The extremely low stability of lanthanide clusters with precise structures and nanometer dimensions in aqueous solutions limits their application in the field of photodynamic sterilization. In this study, an hourglass-shaped nine-nucleated Dy9 cluster (1) with excellent light-driven reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation ability and photodynamic sterilization property was constructed using acylhydrazone multidentate chelating ligands obtained via an in situ reaction. The eight chelating ligands were distributed outside cluster 1, tightly wrapping the cluster core, thus preventing solvent molecules from attacking the cluster nucleus and ensuring the stability of cluster 1 in solution, which was demonstrated via X-ray diffraction and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS). Time-dependent HRESI-MS monitoring of the self-assembly process of cluster 1 allowed two possible self-assembly mechanisms. The heavy atom effect of multiple Dy(III) ions in the Dy9 cluster enhanced the ISC pathway through spin-orbit coupling, promoting energy transfer from the excited singlet state (S1) to the triplet state (T1), which was stabilized, inducing the generation of more ROS. Cluster 1 showed a remarkable sterilization effect due to the generation of abundant ROS under light irradiation conditions. To our knowledge, this is a rare instance of lanthanide clusters with photodynamic sterilization, providing new horizons for the construction of fast and efficient sterilizers.

Substituted fullerenes as a promising capping ligand towards stabilization of exohedral Dy(III) based single-ion magnets: a theoretical study

Organometallic dysprosocenium-based molecular magnets are the forefront runners in offering giant magnetic anisotropy and blocking temperatures close to the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. Attaining linearity in the organometallic dysprosocenium complexes is the key to generating giant magnetic anisotropy and blocking barriers. In the present study, we have unravelled the coordination ability of the substituted fullerene (C55X5)- (where X = CCH3, B, and N) generated by fencing around the five-membered ring of fullerene towards stabilizing a new family of exohedral dysprosium organometallic complexes showcasing giant magnetic anisotropy and blockade barriers. Eight exohedral mononuclear dysprosium organometallic complexes, namely [Dy(η5-C55X5)(η4-C4H4)] (1), [Dy(η5-C55X5)(η5-Cp)]+ (2), [Dy(η5-C55X5)(η5-Cp*)]+ (3), [Dy(η5-C55X5)(η6-C6H6)]2+ (4), [Dy(η5-C55X5)(η8-C8H8)] (5), [Dy(η5-C55X5)2]+ (6) (where X = CCH3), [Dy(η5-C55B5)2]+ (7) and [Dy(η5-C55N5)2]+ (8), were studied using scalar relativistic density functional theory (SR-DFT) and the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) methodology to shed light on the structure, stability, bonding and single-ion magnetic properties. SR-DFT calculations predict complexes 1-8 to be highly stable, with a strictly linear geometry around the Dy(III) ion in complexes 6-8. Energy Decomposition Analysis (EDA) predicts the following order for interaction energy (ΔEint value): 5 > 1 > 2 ≈ 3 > 6 > 7 > 8 > 4, with sizable 4f-ligand covalency in all the complexes. CASSCF calculations on complexes 1-8 predict stabilization of mJ |±15/2〉 as the ground state for all the complexes except for 5, with the following trend in the Ucal values: 6 (1573 cm-1) ≈ 3 (1569 cm-1) > 1 (1538 cm-1) > 8 (1347 cm-1) > 2 (1305 cm-1) > 7 (1284 cm-1) > 4 (1125 cm-1) > 5 (108 cm-1). Ab initio ligand field theory (AILFT) analysis provides a rationale for Ucal ordering, where π-type 4f-ligand interactions in complexes 1-4 and 6-8 offer giant barrier height while the large (C8H8)2- rings generate δ-type interaction in 5, which diminishes the axiality in the ligand field. Our detailed finding suggests that the exohedral organometallic dysprosocenium complexes are more linear compared to bent [DyCp*2]+ cations and display a giant barrier height exceeding 1500 cm-1 with negligible quantum tunnelling of magnetization (QTM) - a new approach to design highly anisotropic dysprosium organometallic complexes.

Levamisole Based Co(II) Single-Ion Magnet

A new Co(II) complex, [Co(NCS)2(L)2] (1) has been synthesized based on levamisole (L) as a new ligand. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses confirm that the Co(II) ion is having a distorted tetrahedral coordination geometry in the complex. Notably strong intramolecular S⋅⋅⋅S and S⋅⋅⋅N interactions has been confirmed by employing Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM). These intramolecular interactions occur among the sulfur and nitrogen atoms of the levamisole ligands and also the nitrogen atoms of the thiocyanate. Direct current (dc) magnetic analyses reveal presence of zero field splitting (ZFS) and large magnetic anisotropy on Co(II). Detailed ab initio ligand field theory calculations quantitatively predicted the magnitude of ZFS. Prominent field-induced single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior was observed for 1 from dynamic magnetization measurements. Slow magnetic relaxation follows an Orbach mechanism with the effective energy barrier Ueff=29.6 (7) K and relaxation time τo=1.4 (4)×10-9 s.

Constructing high axiality mononuclear dysprosium molecular magnets via a regulation-of-co-ligands strategy

Two lanthanide complexes with formulae [DyIII(LN5)(pentafluoro-PhO)3] (1) and [DyIII(LN5)(2,6-difluoro-PhO)2](BPh4) (2) (LN5 = 2,14-dimethyl-3,6,10,13,19-pentaazabicyclo[13.3.1]nonadecal (19),2,13,15,17-pentaene) were structurally and magnetically characterized. DyIII ions lie in the cavity of a five coordinate nitrogen macrocycle, and in combination with the introduction of multi-fluorinated monodentate phenoxyl coligands a high axiality coordination symmetry is built. Using the pentafluorophenol co-ligand, complex 1 with a D2d coordination environment, is obtained and displays moderate single-molecule magnets (SMMs) behavior. When difluorophenol co-ligands were used, a higher local axisymmetric pentagonal bipyramidal coordination geometry was observed in complex 2, which displays apparent slow magnetic relaxation behavior with a hysteresis temperature of up to 5 K. Further magnetic studies of diluted samples combined with ab initio calculations indicate that the high axiality plays a crucial role in suppressing quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) and consequently results in good slow magnetic relaxation behavior. Different fluoro-substituted phenoxyl co-ligands have phenoloxy oxygen atoms with different electrostatic potentials as well as a different number of phenoloxy coligands along the magnetic axis, resulting in different ligand field strengths and coordination symmetries.

Eight-coordinate mono- and dinuclear Dy(III) complexes containing a rigid equatorial plane and an anisobidentate carboxylate ligand in the axial position: synthesis, structure and magnetism

A rigid pentadentate chelating ligand (H2L) has been utilized to synthesize a series of octacoordinate mononuclear complexes, [Dy(L)(Ph3PO)(OOCR)] (where R = C6H5 (1), C(CH3)3 (2), CF3 (3)) and a dinuclear complex, [Dy2(L)2(Ph3PO)2{(OOC)2C6H4}] (4) based on the highly anisotropic Dy(III) ion. All the complexes were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The complexes were formed by the coordination action of the dianionic pentadentate ligand [L]2-, one phosphine oxide, and carboxylate ligands. DC and AC magnetic measurements were performed on 1-4. Complexes 1-4 show SMM behaviour, under zero DC field for 1 and 4, and under 500 Oe and 1000 Oe DC fields for 2 and 3 respectively, with thermally activated, Raman, and Raman and quantum tunnelling dominant relaxation mechanisms for 1 and 2, 3 and 4, respectively.

Contrasting impact of coordination polyhedra and site symmetry on the electronic energy levels in nine-coordinated Eu(III) and Sm(III) crystals structures determined from single crystal luminescence spectra

Lanthanide luminescence is characterised by "forbidden" 4f-4f transitions and a complicated electronic structure. Our understanding of trivalent lanthanide(III) ion luminescence is centered on Eu3+ because absorbing and emitting transitions in Eu3+ occur from a single electronic energy level. In Sm3+ both absorbing and emitting multiplets have a larger multiplicity. A band arising in transitions from the first emitting state multiplet to the ground state multiplet will have nine lines for a Sm3+ complex. In this study, high-resolution emission and excitation spectra were used to determine the electronic energy levels for the lowest multiplet and first emitting multiplet in four Sm3+ compounds with either tricapped trigonal prismatic TTP or capped square antiprismatic cSAP coordination polyhedra but different site symmetry. This was achieved by the use of Boltzmann distribution population analysis and experimentally determined transition probabilities from emission and excitation spectra. Using this analysis it was possible to show the effect of changing three oxygen atoms with three nitrogen atoms in the donor set for two compounds with the same coordination polyhedra and site symmetry. This work celebrates the 40th anniversary of Kirby and Richardson's first report of [Eu(ODA)3]3- luminescence.

Substituent Positioning Effects on the Magnetic Properties of Sandwich-Type Erbium(III) Complexes with Bis(trimethylsilyl)-Substituted Cyclooctatetraenyl Ligands

Lanthanide complexes with judiciously designed ligands have been extensively studied for their potential applications as single-molecule magnets. With the influence of ligands on their magnetic properties generally established, recent research has unearthed certain effects inherent to site differentiation due to the different types and varying numbers of substituents on the same ligand platform. Using two new sandwich-type Er(III) complexes with cyclooctatetraenyl (COT) ligands featuring two differently positioned trimethylsilyl (TMS) substituents, namely, [Li(DME)Er(COT1,5-TMS2)2]n (Er1) and [Na(DME)3][Er(COT1,3-TMS2)2] (Er2) [COT1,3-TMS2 and COT1,5-TMS2 donate 1,3- and 1,5-bis(trimethylsilyl)-substituted cyclooctatetraenyl ligands, respectively; DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane], and with reference to previously reported [Li(DME)3][Er(COT1,4-TMS2)2] (A) and [K(DME)2][Er(COT1,4-TMS2)2] (B), any possible substituent position effects have been explored for the first time. The rearrangement of the TMS substituents from the starting COT1,4-TMS2 to COT1,3-TMS2 and COT1,5-TMS2, by way of formal migration of the TMS group, was thermally induced in the case of Er1, while for the formation of Er2, the use of Na+ in the placement of its Li+ and K+ congeners is essential. Both Er1 and Er2 display single-molecule magnetic behaviors with energy barriers of 170(3) and 172(6) K, respectively. Magnetic hysteresis loops, butterfly-shaped for Er1 and wide open for Er2, were observed up to 12 K for Er1 and 13 K for Er2. Studies of magnetic dynamics reveal the different pathways for relaxation of magnetization below 10 K, mainly by the Raman process for Er1 and by quantum tunneling of magnetization for Er2, leading to the order of magnitude difference in magnetic relaxation times and sharply different magnetic hysteresis loops.

Unravelling the role of spin-vibrational coupling in designing high-performance pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(iii) single ion magnets

At the cutting edge of high-performance single-molecule magnets (SMMs) lie lanthanide-based complexes, renowned for their potent magnetic anisotropy. SMMs containing one metal centre are defined as single-ion magnets (SIMs). The performance of SMMs is measured generally via the barrier height for magnetisation reversal (Ueff) and blocking temperature (TB), below which the magnetisation is fully frozen. To enhance the Ueff and TB values in lanthanide-based SMMs, the static crystal field splitting of mJ levels has been effectively adjusted through ligand design, leveraging the oblate/prolate ground state 4f electron density shape. However, the maximum fine-tuning achievable through ligand design, known as the axial limit, has already been reached in this class of compounds. This necessitates new design principles to enhance SMM characteristics to better suit end-user applications. Among other avenues that can be explored to improve SMM characteristics, a deeper understanding of spin-phonon coupling is critical to advancing TB values. However, there are only a handful of examples where this has been deciphered. In this work, using a combination of DFT and ab initio CASSCF calculations, we have performed spin-phonon calculations on five classes of pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(iii) SIMs exhibiting TB values in the range of 4.5 K to 36 K ([Dy(bbpen)Br] (1, H2bbpen = N,N'-bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)-N,N'-bis(2-methylpyridyl)ethylenediamine), [Dy(OCMe3)Br(THF)5][BPh4] (2) [Dy(OSiMe3)Br(THF)5] [BPh4] (3), [Dy(LN5)(Ph3SiO)2](BPh4)·CH2Cl2 (4) and [L2Dy(H2O)5][I]3·L2·H2O (5, L = tBuPO(NHiPr)2)). Unlike the method employed elsewhere for the calculation of spin-phonon coupling, in this work, we have employed a set of criteria and intuitively selected vibrational modes to perform the spin-phonon coupling analysis. The approach provided here not only reduces the computational cost significantly but also suggests chemical intuition to improve the performance of this class of compounds. Our calculations reveal that low-energy vibrational modes govern the magnetisation relaxation in these SIMs. A flexible first coordination sphere found on some of the complexes was found to be responsible for low-energy vibrations that flip the magnetisation, reducing the TB values drastically (complexes 2 and 3). On the other hand, a rigid first coordination sphere and a stiff ligand framework move the spin-vibrational coupling that causes the relaxation to lie beyond the secondary coordination sphere, resulting in an increase in TB values. Our calculations also reveal that not only the atoms in the first coordination sphere but also those in the secondary coordination sphere affect the performance of the SMMs. Learning from this exercise, we have undertaken several in silico models based on these vibrations to improve the TB values. Some of these predictions were correlated with literature precedents, offering confidence in the methodology employed. To this end, our comprehensive investigation, involving twenty-three molecules/models and five sets of geometries for pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(iii) single-ion magnets (SIMs), unveils a treasure trove of chemically sound design clues, poised to enhance the TB values in this fascinating molecular realm.

Luminescent Er3+ based single molecule magnets with fluorinated alkoxide or aryloxide ligands

We report the synthesis, structures, and magnetic and luminescence properties of a series of new mono- and dinuclear Er3+ complexes derived from sterically demanding aryloxide and fluorinated alkoxide ligands: [4-tBu-2,6-(Ph2CH)2C6H2O]3Er(THF) (1), [(C6F5)3CO]3Er(Me3SiOH) (2), [(C6F5)3CO]3Er[(Me3Si)2NH] (3), [(C6F5)3CO]3Er(C6H5CH3) (4), [(C6F5)3CO]3Er(o-Me2NC6H4CH3) (5) and {[Ph(CF3)2CO]2Er(μ2-OC(CF3)2Ph)}2 (6). In compounds 1, 2, and 4, the Er3+ ion is four-coordinated and adopts a distorted trigonal pyramidal geometry, while in 3, 5, and 6, the coordination geometry of Er3+ is impacted by the presence of several relatively short Er⋯F distances, making them rather 6-coordinated. All compounds behave as field-induced Single Molecule Magnets (SMMs) and exhibit an Er3+ characteristic near infrared (NIR) emission associated with the 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 transition with a remarkably long lifetime going up to 73 μs, which makes them multifunctional luminescent SMMs. The deconvolution of the NIR emission spectra allowed us to provide a direct probe of the crystal field splitting in these compounds, which was correlated with magnetic data.

Dipolar Coupling as a Mechanism for Fine Control of Magnetic States in ErCOT-Alkyl Molecular Magnets

The design of molecular magnets has progressed greatly by taking advantage of the ability to impart successive perturbations and control vibronic transitions in 4fn systems through the careful manipulation of the crystal field. Herein, we control the orientation and rigidity of two dinuclear ErCOT-based molecular magnets: the inversion-symmetric bridged [ErCOT(μ-Me)(THF)]2 (2) and the nearly linear Li[(ErCOT)2(μ-Me)3] (3). The conserved anisotropy of the ErCOT synthetic unit facilitates the direction of the arrangement of its magnetic anisotropy for the purposes of generating controlled internal magnetic fields, improving control of the energetics and transition probabilities of the electronic angular momentum states with exchange biasing via dipolar coupling. This control is evidenced through the introduction of a second thermal barrier to relaxation operant at low temperatures that is twice as large in 3 as in 2. This barrier acts to suppress through-barrier relaxation by protecting the ground state from interacting with stray local fields while operating at an energy scale an order of magnitude smaller than the crystal field term. These properties are highlighted when contrasted against the mononuclear structure ErCOT(Bn)(THF)2 (1), in which quantum tunneling of the magnetization processes dominate, as demonstrated by magnetometry and ab initio computational methods. Furthermore, far-infrared magnetospectroscopy measurements reveal that the increased rigidity imparted by successive removal of solvent ligands when adding bridging methyl groups, along with the increased excited state purity, severely limits local spin-vibrational interactions that facilitate magnetic relaxation, manifesting as longer relaxation times in 3 relative to those in 2 as temperature is increased.

Spectroscopic techniques to probe magnetic anisotropy and spin-phonon coupling in metal complexes

Magnetism of molecular quantum materials such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs) has been actively studied for potential applications in the new generation of high-density data storage using SMMs and quantum information science. Magnetic anisotropy and spin-phonon coupling are two key properties of d- and f-metal complexes. Here, phonons refer to both intermolecular and intramolecular vibrations. Direct determination of magnetic anisotropy and experimental studies of spin-phonon coupling are critical to the understanding of molecular magnetism. This article discusses our recent approach in using three complementary techniques, far-IR and Raman magneto-spectroscopies (FIRMS and RaMS, respectively) and inelastic neutron scatterings (INS), to determine magnetic excited states. Spin-phonon couplings are observed in FIRMS and RaMS. DFT phonon calculations give energies and symmetries of phonons as well as calculated INS spectra which help identify magnetic peaks in experimental INS spectra.

Magnetodielectric Effect in a Triangular Dysprosium Single-Molecule Toroics

Single-molecule toroics are molecular magnets with vortex distribution of magnetic moments. The coupling between magnetic and electric properties such as the magnetodielectric effect will provide potential applications for them. Herein, the observation of significant magnetodielectric effect in a triangular Dy3 crystal with toroidal magnetic moment and multiple magnetic relaxations is reported. The analysis of magnetic and electric properties implies that the magnetodielectric effect is closely related to the strong spin-lattice coupling, magnetic interactions of Dy3+ ions, as well as molecular packing models.

Coordination recognition of differential template units of lanthanide chiral chain

Coordination-driven self-assembly processes often produce remarkable structures. In particular, self-assembly processes mediated by chiral template units have provided research ideas for analyzing the formation of chiral macromolecules in living organisms. In this study, by regulating the proportion of reaction raw materials in the "one-pot" synthesis of lanthanide complexes, we constructed chiral template units with different coordination orientations. As a result, lanthanide chiral chains connected to different structures were obtained through the self-assembly process of coordination recognition. In particular, driven by coordination, chiral template units with codirectional coordination points (called cis configuration) coordinate solely with cis template units during the self-assembly process to obtain a one-dimensional (1D) chain R-1/S-1 with an "S"-shaped distribution. Moreover, chiral template units with reversed coordination sites (called trans configuration) and twisted chiral template units are connected solely to templates with the same configuration to form a 1D chain R-2/S-2 with an axial helix. A circular dichroism spectrum shows that R-1/S-1 and R-2/S-2 are two pairs of enantiomers. The controllable construction of these two differential 1D chains is of great significance for studying coordination recognition at the molecular level. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to construct a 1D lanthanide chain through the self-assembly process of coordination recognition. The assembly process of nucleotides to form a hierarchical structure is simulated. This work provides a vivid example of the controllable synthesis of lanthanide complexes with precise structures and offers a new perspective on the formation process of chiral macromolecules that simulates natural processes.

The influence of light on the field-induced magnetization dynamics of two Er(III) coordination polymers with different halogen substituents

Photocontrolled magnetic properties are fundamental for the applications of molecular magnets, which have the features of high time and space resolution; however, such magnetic properties are highly challenging to be achieved owing to the weak light-matter interactions. Herein, the influence of in situ light irradiation on the field-induced magnetization dynamics of two Er(III) coordination polymers 1 and 2 with the same coordination skeletons but different halogen substituents was studied. 1 and 2, and their in situ photoexcited products 1a and 2a, display field-induced magnetization dynamics based on Orbach and/or Raman processes. The magnetization dynamics are fine-modulated by the synergetic effect of light irradiation and a ligand substituent, due to the charge re-distribution of the excited states of the ligand.

Slow Magnetization Relaxation in a Family of Triangular {CoIII 2 LnIII } Clusters: The Effect of Diamagnetic CoIII Ions on the LnIII Magnetic Dynamics

The first use of the Schiff base chelate N-naphthalidene-o-aminophenol (naphH2 ) in Co/Ln chemistry has afforded a family of isostructural [CoIII 2 LnIII (OMe)2 (naph)2 (O2 CMe)3 (MeOH)2 ] (Ln=Tb, Dy and Er) complexes, revealing a rare {CoIII 2 Ln(μ3 -OMe)}8+ triangular core composed of two diamagnetic CoIII ions and a 4f-ion with slightly distorted square antiprismatic geometry. Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility studies revealed that {Co2 Dy}, and its magnetic diluted analogue {Co2 Dy0.05 Y0.95 }, behave as mononuclear single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with similar energy barriers for the magnetization reversal, Ueff , of ~85-90 K. SMM properties were also detected for {Co2 Er}, with the compound exhibiting a Ueff of 18.7 K under an applied magnetic field of 800 Oe. To interpret the experimental magnetic results, ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO and DFT calculations were performed as a means of exploring the single-ion characteristics of LnIII ions and comprehend the role of the diamagnetic CoIII ions in the magnetization relaxation of the three heterometallic compounds.

Peripheral site modification in a family of dinuclear [Dy2(hynad)2-6(NO3)0-6(sol)0-2]0/2- single-molecule magnets bearing a {Dy2(μ-OR)2}4+ diamond-shaped core and exhibiting dissimilar magnetic dynamics

The first use of the organic chelate N-hydroxy-1,8-naphthalimide (hynadH) in DyIII chemistry has unveiled access to a synthetic 'playground' composed of four new dinuclear complexes, all of which possess the same planar {Dy2(μ-OR)2}4+ diamond-shaped core, resulting from the bridging and chelating capacity of the hynad- groups. The structural stability of the central {Dy2} core has allowed for the modulation of the peripheral coordination sites of the metal ions, and specifically the NO3-/hynad- ratio of capping groups, thus affording the compounds [Dy2(hynad)2(NO3)4(DMF)2] (1), (Me4N)2[Dy2(hynad)2(NO3)6] (2), [Dy2(hynad)4(NO3)2(H2O)2] (3), and [Dy2(hynad)6(H2O)2] (4). Because of the chemical and structural modifications in the series 1-4, the DyIII coordination polyhedra are also dissimilar, comprising the muffin (1 and 3), tetradecahedral (2), and spherical tricapped trigonal prismatic (4) geometries. Complexes 1, 2, and 4 exhibit a ferromagnetic response at low temperatures, while 3 is antiferromagnetically coupled. All compounds exhibit out-of-phase (χ''M) ac signals as a function of ac frequency and temperature, thus behaving as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), in the absence or presence of applied dc fields. Interestingly, the hynad--rich and nitrato-free complex 4, demonstrates the largest energy barrier (Ueff = 69.62(1) K) for the magnetization reversal which is attributed to the presence of the two axial triangular faces of the spherical tricapped trigonal prism by the negatively charged O-atoms of the hynad- ligands.

Synthesis, structures and magnetic studies of hexanuclear lanthanide complexes: SMM behavior of the DyIII analogue and MCE properties of the GdIII analogue

The synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of homometallic hexanuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln6(HL)4(tfa)4(S)2]·2NO3·x H2O·yMeOH (1, Ln = Gd, S = MeOH, x = 0, y = 0; 2, Ln = Tb, S = H2O, x = 2, y = 2; 3, Ln = Dy, S = MeOH, x = 0, y = 2; 4, Ln = Er, S = MeOH, x = 0, y = 2). [(H4L) = 6-((bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino)-N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)picolinohydrazide) (tfa = trifloroacetylacetone)] are reported. These hexanuclear assemblies are made up of two trinuclear triangular sub-units linked through the oxygen atoms of two phenoxide bridging groups in a corner sharing arrangement. Magnetic studies reveal that 1 displays a magnetocaloric effect with a maximum value of -ΔSm = 21.03 J kg-1 K-1 at T = 3 K and under an applied field change ΔB = 5 T. Complex 3 shows slow relaxation of magnetization even under zero applied field although a clear maximum in the ac susceptibility plots cannot be seen. However, under an optimal applied field of 0.2 T, clear maxima are observed in the out-of-phase (χ''M) component of the ac susceptibility in the temperature range 3.5 K (2 kHz) to 10.5 K (10 kHz). The temperature dependence of the relaxation times could be fitted to the sum of Orbach, Raman and QTM relaxation processes affording the following parameters: τo = 3.4(9) × 10-8 s, Ueff = 94(2) K, BRaman = 16.43(1) K-n s-1, n = 3.2(3) and τQTM = 0.0044(3) s. 4, under an applied magnetic field of 0.2 T, shows slow relaxation of magnetization through a thermally activated Orbach process with Ueff = 18.2(9) K and τo = 3.5(3) × 10-8 s.

Structure and Magnetic Properties of Homoleptic Trivalent Tris(alkyl)lanthanides

Six new solvent-free, homoleptic paramagnetic tris(alkyl)lanthanides Ln{C(SiHMe₂)₃}₃ (1Ln) and Ln{C(SiHMe₂)₂Ph}₃ (2Ln) (Ln = Gd, Dy, and Er) were synthesized to investigate the magnetic properties of 4f organometallic compounds stabilized by secondary Ln↼H-Si and benzylic interactions. The unit cell of 1Gd contains one independent molecule (Z = 2), while 1Dy and 1Er crystallize with four independent isostructural molecules per unit cell (Z = 16). In all molecules, as in other 1Ln compounds, the three tris(dimethylsilyl)methyl ligands form a trigonal planar LnC₃ core, and six secondary interactions involving Ln↼H-Si bonding in Ln{C(SiHMe₂)₃}₃ form above and below the equatorial plane. Two and five crystallographically independent molecules of each 2Ln (2Gd, Z = 8; 2Dy, Z = 20) form with three π-coordinated phenyl groups in addition to either one or two secondary Ln↼H-Si interactions per molecule. The packing of these midseries organolanthanide compounds contrasts the single crystallographically unique molecules in previously reported La{C(SiHMe₂)₃}₃ (1La, Z = 2, Z' = 1) and La{C(SiHMe₂)₂Ph}₃ (2La, Z = 2, Z' = 1/3). 2La doped with 2Dy can adopt the crystallographic structure of 2La, which promotes magnetic properties, namely a higher χ_mT value at low temperatures as well as stronger magnetic anisotropy. The ac susceptibility data for 10% 2Dy doped into 2La suggests slow relaxation at low temperatures with a relaxation barrier of ∼45 K. The computed saturated magnetization of 1Er (M ≈ 4.5 μ_B) and 1Dy (M ≈ 6 μ_B) matches the experimental values, while the computed value for 2Dy better matches the value measured for 2Dy diluted in 2La (M ≈ 5 μ_B). Gas-phase calculations predict that the ground-state and first excited-state multiplet separations are larger for 1Er than 2Er, while the ordering for dysprosium is 1Dy > 2Dy.

Modulation of magnetization dynamics of an Er(III) coordination polymer by the conversion of a ligand to a radical using UV light

Light-induced substance conversion is highly promising for creating new radical-based compounds. Herein, we report an Er(III) coordination polymer [Er(CA)(ACA)(DMF)(H₂O)]_n (1) and its Y(III)-diluted analogue 1@Y (H₂CA = 2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxy-p-quinone, HACA = 9-anthracene carboxylic acid) with the light-induced transformation of the ligand to a radical. The χ_MT values of light-transformed products 1a and 1a@Y are higher than those of 1 and 1@Y, respectively, due to the formation of radicals by ultraviolet light irradiation, confirmed by EPR measurement as well. The effective energy barriers for magnetization reversal (U_eff) decrease from 72 K for 1 to 67 K for 1a, and from 117 K for 1@Y to 94 K for 1a@Y. This work not only provides a new light-conversion system but also reveals the nature of photo-induced variation of magnetic properties.

Isotopic enrichment in lanthanide coordination complexes: contribution to single-molecule magnets and spin qudit insights

Lanthanide Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) fascinate the scientific community due to their plethora of potential applications ranging from data storage to spintronic devices and quantum computing. This review article proposes a comprehensive description of the influence of the nuclear spin, i.e. hyperfine interaction, on the magnetic properties of lanthanide SMMs and on quantum information processing of qudit. This influence is analysed for non-Kramers and Kramers lanthanide SMMs as well as for the electronic distribution of the electron in 4f orbitals i.e. oblate and prolate ions. Then the role of magnetic interactions in isotopically enriched polynuclear Dy(III) SMMs is discussed. Finally the possible effect of superhyperfine interaction due to the nuclear spin of elements originating from the surrounding of the lanthanide centre is analyzed. The effect of nuclear spin on the dynamics of the lanthanide SMMs is demonstrated using different techniques such as magnetometry, muon spectroscopy (μ-SR), and Mössbauer and Resonance Vibrational Spectroscopies.

Lanthanide-radical single-molecule magnets: current status and future challenges

In the field of molecular magnetism, the lanthanide-radical (Ln-Rad) method has become one of the most appealing tactics for introducing strong magnetic interactions and has spurred on the booming development of heterospin single-molecule magnets (SMMs). The article is a timely retrospect on the research progress of Ln-Rad heterospin systems and special attention is invested on low dimensional Ln-Rad compounds with SMM behavior, primarily concerning with nitrogen-based radicals, semiquinone and nitroxide radicals. Rational design, molecular structures, magnetic behaviors and magneto-structural correlations are highlighted. Meanwhile, particular attention is focused on the influence of exchange couplings on the dynamic magnetic properties, with the purpose of helping to guide the design of prospective radical-based Ln-SMMs.

Synergy of Magnetic Anisotropy and Ferromagnetic Interaction Triggering a Dimeric Cr(II) Zero-Field Single-Molecule Magnet

A novel Cr^II-dimeric complex, [Cr^IIN(SiⁱPr₃)₂(μ-Cl)(THF)]₂ (1), has been successfully constructed using a bulky silyl-amide ligand. Single-crystal structure analysis reveals that complex 1 exhibits a binuclear motif, with a Cr₂Cl₂ rhombus core, where two equivalent tetra-coordinate Cr^II centers in the centrosymmetric unit display quasi-square planar geometry. The crystal structure has been well simulated and explored by density functional theory calculations. The axial zero-field splitting parameter (D < 0) with a small rhombic (E) value is unambiguously determined by systematic investigations of magnetic measurements, high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and ab initio calculations. Remarkably, ac magnetic susceptibility data unveil that 1 features slow dynamic magnetic relaxation typical of single-molecule magnet behavior with U_eff = 22 K in the absence of a dc field. This increases up to 35 K under a corresponding static field. Moreover, magnetic studies and theoretical calculations point out that a non-negligible ferromagnetic coupling (FMC) exists in the dimeric Cr-Cr units of 1. The coexistence of magnetic anisotropy and FMC contributes to the first case of Cr^II-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs) under zero dc field.

Strategies to quench quantum tunneling of magnetization in lanthanide single molecule magnets

Enhancing blocking temperature (T_B) is one of the holy grails in Single Molecule Magnets(SMMs), as any future potential application in this class of molecules is directly correlated to this parameter. Among many factors contributing to a reduction of T_B value, Quantum Tunnelling of Magnetisation (QTM), a phenomenon that is a curse or a blessing based on the application sought after, tops the list. Theoretical tools based on density functional and ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO methods have played a prominent role in estimating various spin Hamiltonian parameters and establishing the mechanism of magnetization relaxation in this class of molecules. Particularly, various strategies to quench QTM effects go hand-in-hand with experiments, and different methods proposed to quell QTM effects are scattered in the literature. In this perspective, we have explored various approaches that are proposed in the literature to quench QTM effects, and these include the role of (i) local symmetry of lanthanides, (ii) super-exchange interaction in {3d-4f} complexes, (iii) direct-exchange interaction in {radical-4f} and metal-metal bonded complexes to suppress the QTM, (iv) utilizing external stimuli such as an electric field or pressure to modulate the QTM and (v) avoiding QTM effects by stabilising toroidal states in 4f and {3d-4f} clusters. We believe the strategies summarized here will help to design new-generation SMMs.

Lanthanide Single-molecule Magnets: Synthetic Strategy, Structures, Properties and Recent Advances

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) show wide potential applications in the field of ultrahigh-density storage materials, quantum computing, spintronics, and so on. Lanthanide (Ln) SMMs, as an important category of SMMs, open up a promising prospect due to their large magnetic moments and huge magnetic anisotropy. However, the construction of high performance for Ln SMMs remains an enormous challenge. Although remarkable advances are focused on the topic of Ln SMMs, the research on Ln SMMs with different nuclear numbers is still deficient. Therefore, this review summarizes the design strategies for the construction of Ln SMMs, as well as the metal skeleton types. Furthermore, we collect reported Ln SMMs with mononuclearity, dinuclearity, and multinuclearity (three or more Ln spin centers) and the SMM properties including energy barrier (U_eff ) and pre-exponential factor (τ₀ ) are described. Finally, Ln SMMs with low-nuclearity SMMs, especially for single-ion magnets (SIMs), are highlighted to understand the correlations between structures and magnetic behavior of the detail SMM properties are described. We expect the review can shed light on the future developments of high-performance Ln SMMs.

Unraveling the Contributions to Spin-Lattice Relaxation in Kramers Single-Molecule Magnets

The study of how spin interacts with lattice vibrations and relaxes to equilibrium provides unique insights into its chemical environment and the relation between electronic structure and molecular composition. Despite its importance for several disciplines, ranging from magnetic resonance to quantum technologies, a convincing interpretation of spin dynamics in crystals of magnetic molecules is still lacking due to the challenging experimental determination of the correct spin relaxation mechanism. We apply ab initio spin dynamics to a series of 12 coordination complexes of Co2+ and Dy3+ ions selected among ∼240 compounds that largely cover the literature on single-molecule magnets and well represent different regimes of spin relaxation. Simulations reveal that the Orbach spin relaxation rate of known compounds mostly depends on the ions' zero-field splitting and little on the details of molecular vibrations. Raman relaxation is instead found to be also significantly affected by the features of low-energy phonons. These results provide a complete understanding of the factors limiting spin lifetime in single-molecule magnets and revisit years of experimental investigations by making it possible to transparently distinguish Orbach and Raman relaxation mechanisms.

Axial Ligand as a Critical Factor for High-Performance Pentagonal Bipyramidal Dy(III) Single-Ion Magnets

The choice of axial ligands is of great importance for the construction of high-performance Dy-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Here, combining axial ligands Ph₃SiO^- (anion of triphenylsilanol) and 2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO^- (the anion of 2,6-dichloro-4-nitrophenol) with a neutral macrocyclic ligand 2,14-dimethyl-3,6,10,13,19-pentaazabicyclo[13.3.1]nonadeca-1(19),2,13,15,17-pentaene (L₂^N5) generates two new pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(III) complexes [Dy^III(L₂^N5) (X)₂](BPh₄) (X = Ph₃SiO^-, 1; 2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO^-, 2) with strong axial ligand fields. Magnetic characterizations show that 1 possesses a large energy barrier above 1000 K and a magnetic hysteresis up to 9 K, whereas 2 only displays field-induced peaks of alternating-current susceptibilities without the hysteresis loop, even though 2 has a similar coordination geometry with 1. Detailed Ab initio calculations indicate an apparent difference in the axial negative charge between both complexes, which is caused by the diverse electron-donating properties of the axial ligands. The present work provides an efficient strategy to enhance the SMMs' properties, which highlights that the electron-donating property of the axial ligands is especially important for constructing the high-performance Dy-based SMMs.

Low-Coordinate Erbium(III) Single-Molecule Magnets with Photochromic Behavior

The structures and magnetic properties of photoresponsive magnets can be controlled or fine-tuned by visible light irradiation, which makes them appealing as candidates for ternary memory devices: photochromic and photomagnetic at the same time. One of the strategies for photoresponsive magnetic systems is the use of photochromic/photoswitchable molecules coordinated to paramagnetic metal centers to indirectly influence their magnetic properties. Herein, we present two erbium(III)-based coordination systems: a trinuclear molecule {[Er^III(BHT)₃]₃(dtepy)₂}^.4C₅H₁₂ (1) and a 1D coordination chain {[Er^III(BHT)₃(azopy)}_n·2C₅H₁₂ (2), where the bridging photochromic ligands belong to the class of diarylethenes: 1,2-bis((2-methyl-5-pyridyl)thie-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentene (dtepy) and 4,4′-azopyridine (azopy), respectively (BHT = 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenolate). Both compounds show slow dynamics of magnetization, typical for single-molecule magnets (SMMs) as revealed by alternating current (AC) magnetic susceptibility measurements. The trinuclear compound 1 also shows an immediate color change from yellow to dark blue in response to near-UV irradiation. Such behavior is typical for the photoisomerization of the open form of the ligand into its closed form. The color change can be reversed by exposing the closed form to visible light. The chain-like compound 2, on the other hand, does not show significant signs of the expected trans–cis photoisomerization of the azopyridine in response to UV irradiation and does not appear to show photoswitching behavior.

Three-coordinate [Er^III(BHT)₃] single ion magnets undergo ligand addition reaction in pentane to form linear trinuclear photochromic nanomagnets where both functionalities persist.

Lanthanide SMMs Based on Belt Macrocycles: Recent Advances and General Trends

Enhancement of axial magnetic anisotropy is the central objective to push forward the performance of Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) complexes. In the case of mononuclear lanthanide complexes, the chemical environment around the paramagnetic ion must be tuned to place strongly interacting ligands along either the axial positions or the equatorial plane, depending on the oblate or prolate preference of the selected lanthanide. One classical strategy to achieve a precise chemical environment for a metal centre is using highly structured, chelating ligands. A natural approach for axial-equatorial control is the employment of macrocycles acting in a belt conformation, providing the equatorial coordination environment, and leaving room for axial ligands. In this review, we present a survey of SMMs based on the macrocycle belt motif. Literature systems are divided in three families (crown ether, Schiff-base and metallacrown) and their general properties in terms of structural stability and SMM performance are briefly discussed.

Triangulo-{ErIII 3} complex showing field supported slow magnetic relaxation

The triangulo-{Er3} complex [Er3Cl(o-van)3(OH)2(H2O)5]Cl3·nH2O (n = 9.4; H(o-van) = o-vanillin) (1) was generated by an in situ method. The isolated Er(iii) complex 1 was characterized by elemental analysis and molecular spectroscopy. The results of single crystal X-ray diffraction studies have shown that 1 is built up of trinuclear [Er3Cl(o-van)3(OH)2(H2O)5]3+ complex cations, chloride anions and water solvate molecules. Within the complex cation the three Er(iii) central atoms are placed at the apexes of a triangle which are bridged by three (o-van)- ligands with additional chelating functions and two μ3-OH- ligands. Additionally five aqua and one chlorido ligands complete the octa-coordination of the three Er(iii) atoms. AC susceptibility measurements reveal that the compound exhibits slow magnetic relaxation with two relaxation modes.

Neutral dicyanidoferrate(II) metalloligands for the rational design of dysprosium(III) single-molecule magnets

Diamagnetic cis-dicyanidoferrate(II) complexes bearing blocking aromatic diimines, cis-[Fe^II(CN)₂(L_NN)₂]⁰ (L_NN = 2,2'-bipyridine, 1,10'-phenanthroline) serve as metalloligands to Dy^III centres leading to a rigid cyanido-bridged chain of vertex-sharing {Dy^III₂Fe^II₂} squares which constrains the equatorial plane of embedded 4f metal ions. This results in a novel convenient route to rationally designed single-molecule magnets as the magnetic anisotropy of Dy^III centres can be efficiently generated by inserting aromatic N-oxide ligands on labile axial positions.

A mononuclear nine-coordinated Dy(iii) complex exhibiting field-induced single-ion magnetism behaviour

A new mononuclear Dy(iii) complex, with the formula [Dy(Hcpt)₃]·2H₂O (1), has been successfully prepared via self-assembly between Dy(iii) ions and 2-cyano-N′-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)amido)acetyl (Hcpt) ligand. X-ray diffraction study shows that the Dy(iii) ion is nine-coordinated by three Hcpt ligands with a tridentate chelating mode, leading to an approximately monocapped square-antiprismatic (C_4v) geometry. Magnetic data analysis demonstrates that 1 performs field-induced slow magnetic relaxation with a relaxation barrier of 97.90 K, due to the quantum tunneling effect suppressed upon a static dc field of 2000 Oe. To deeply understand the magnetic behaviors, the relaxation mechanisms and magneto-structure relationship are rationally discussed using ab initio calculations as well.

Reaction of Dy(iii) ion with tridentate acylhydrazone ligand leads to a field-induced Dy(iii) SIM, of which the magneto-structural correlation is elucidated by the magnetic and theoretical studies.

Supramolecular heptanuclear Ln-Cu complexes involving nitronyl nitroxide biradicals: structure and magnetic behavior

Four novel heptanuclear Ln-Cu complexes with the formula [Ln₂Cu(hfac)₈(NITPhTzbis)₂][LnCu(hfac)₅(NITPhTzbis)]₂ (LnCu = YCu 1, TbCu 2, DyCu 3 and HoCu 4; hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) were successfully constructed by employing the triazole functionalized nitronyl nitroxide biradical ligand NITPh-Tzbis (NITPh-Tzbis = 5-(1,2,4-triazolyl)-1,3-bis(1'-oxyl-3'-oxido-4',4',5',5'-tetramethyl-4,5-hydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)benzene). These hetero-tri-spin complexes are composed of two biradical-bridged dinuclear [(LnCu(hfac)₅(NITPhTzbis)] units and one trinuclear [Ln₂Cu(hfac)₈(NITPhTzbis)₂] unit which form a heptanuclear supramolecular structure through π-π interactions. Magnetic susceptibility investigations indicate that ferromagnetic exchange interactions dominate at low temperature for this supramolecular system which can be attributed to the Ln-nitroxide exchange and intramolecular NIT⋯NIT coupling mediated by the m-phenylene moiety. The DyCu derivative was found to exhibit a slow magnetic relaxation behavior.

An intermetallic molecular nanomagnet with the lanthanide coordinated only by transition metals

Magnetic molecules known as molecular nanomagnets (MNMs) may be the key to ultra-high density data storage. Thus, novel strategies on how to design MNMs are desirable. Here, inspired by the hexagonal structure of the hardest intermetallic magnet SmCo₅, we have synthesized a nanomagnetic molecule where the central lanthanide (Ln) Er^III is coordinated solely by three transition metal ions (TM) in a perfectly trigonal planar fashion. This intermetallic molecule [Er^III(Re^ICp₂)₃] (ErRe₃) starts a family of molecular nanomagnets (MNM) with unsupported Ln-TM bonds and paves the way towards molecular intermetallics with strong direct magnetic exchange interactions-a promising route towards high-performance single-molecule magnets.

Magnetic anisotropy of transition metal and lanthanide ions in pentagonal bipyramidal geometry

The magnetic anisotropy associated with a pentagonal bipyramidal (PBP) coordination sphere is examined on the basis of experimental and theoretical investigations. The origin and the characteristics of this anisotropy are discussed in relation to the electronic configuration of the metal ions. The effects of crystal field, structural distortion, and a second-coordination sphere on the observed anisotropies for transition meal and lanthanide ions are outlined. For the Ln derivatives, we focus on compounds showing SMM-like behavior (i.e. slow relaxation of their magnetization) in order to highlight the essential chemical and structural parameters for achieving strong axial anisotropy. The use of PBP complexes to impart controlled magnetic anisotropy in polynuclear species such as SMMs or SCMs is also addressed. This review of the magnetic anisotropies associated with a pentagonal bipyramidal coordination sphere for transition metal and lanthanide ions is intended to highlight some general trends that can guide chemists towards designing a compound with specific properties.

Tuning the Equatorial Negative Charge in Hexagonal Bipyramidal Dysprosium(III) Single-Ion Magnets to Improve the Magnetic Behavior

Taking advantage of the pentaethylene glycol (EO5) and deprotonation of EO5, a family of new structurally hexagonal bipyramidal Dy(III) complexes, [Dy(EO5)(2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO)₂](2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO) (1), [Dy(EO5-BPh₂)(2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO)₂] (2), and [Dy(EO5-BPh₂)(2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO)Cl] (3), were controbllably synthesized and structurally characterized. Magnetic measurements show that complex 1 is a zero-field SIM and has an observable hysteresis opening up to 4 K. Conversely, only under extra magnetic field is slow magnetic relaxation observed in 2 and 3. This considerable difference in the magnetic behavior is mainly caused by the change of the equatorial negative charge. Detailed ab initio calculations further elucidate that the quantum tunneling is induced by the presence of equatorial negative charge, and the magnetic anisotropy depends on the axial ligands. This work demonstrates that the absence of the equatorial negative charge should also be considered in the rational design of promising single molecular magnets based on the oblate ions.

Coordination-Directed Self-Assembly of Functional Polynuclear Lanthanide Supramolecular Architectures

Lanthanide supramolecular chemistry is a fast growing and intriguing research field due to the unique photophysical, magnetic, and coordination properties of lanthanide ions (Ln^III). Compared with the intensively investigated mononuclear Ln-complexes, polymetallic lanthanide supramolecular assemblies offer more structural superiority and functional advantages. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in polynuclear lanthanide supramolecules, varying from structural evolution to luminescent and magnetic functional materials. This review summarizes the design principles in ligand-induced coordination-driven self-assembly of polynuclear Ln-structures and intends to offer guidance for the construction of more elegant Ln-based architectures and optimization of their functional performances. Design principles concerning the water solubility and chirality of the lanthanide-organic assemblies that are vital in extending their applications are emphasized. The strategies for improving the luminescent properties and the applications in up-conversion, host-guest chemistry, luminescent sensing, and catalysis have been summarized. Magnetic materials based on supramolecular assembled lanthanide architectures are given in an individual section and are classified based on their structural features. Challenges remaining and perspective directions in this field are also briefly discussed.

A cyanometallate- and carbonate-bridged dysprosium chain complex with a pentadentate macrocyclic ligand: synthesis, structure, and magnetism

A novel one-dimensional polymeric cyanometallate- and carbonate-bridged dysprosium(iii) chain with a pentadentate macrocyclic ligand exhibits field-induced multiple-relaxation processes.
