Highly efficient luminescence of Cu(I) compounds: thermally activated delayed fluorescence combined with short-lived phosphorescence

Visualizing Thermally Activated Conical Intersections Governing Non-Radiative Triplet Decay in a Ni(II) Porphyrin-Nanographene Conjugate with Variable Temperature Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

Metalloporphyrins based on open-shell transition metals, such as Ni(II), exhibit typically fast excited-state relaxation. In this work, we shed light into the nonradiative relaxation mechanism in a nanographene-Ni(II) porphyrin conjugate. Variable temperature transient absorption and global fit analysis are combined to produce a picture of the relaxation pathways. At room temperature, photoexcitation of the lowest π-π* transition is followed by vibrational cooling in 1.6 ps, setting a short 20 ps temporal window wherein a small fraction of relaxed singlets radiatively decay to the ground state before intersystem crossing proceeds. Following intersystem crossing, triplets relax rapidly to the ground state (S0) in a few tens of picoseconds. By performing measurements at low temperature, we provide evidence for a competition between two terminal relaxation pathways from the lowest (metal-centered) triplet to the ground state: a slow ground state relaxation process proceeding in time scales beyond 1.6 ns and a faster pathway dictated by a sloped conical intersection, which is thermally accessible at room temperature from the triplet state. The overall triplet decay at a given temperature is dictated by the interplay of these two contributions. This observation bears significance in understanding the underlying fast relaxation processes in Ni-based molecules and related transition metal complexes, opening avenues for potential applications for energy harvesting and optoelectronics.

Theoretical Investigation and Molecular Design: A Series of Tripod-Type Cu(I) Blue Light Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials

The photophysical properties and luminescent mechanism of a series of tripod-type Cu(I) complexes in solution and solids were comprehensively investigated through theoretical simulations. From a microscopic perspective, the experimental phenomenon is explained: (1) The intrinsic reason for the quenching of complex 1 in solution was attributed to the significant nonradiative transition caused by structural deformation; (2) In the solid, the reduced ΔEST for complex 2 effectively facilitate reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) and improves its luminescence efficiency; (3) The enhanced performance of complex 3 in solution is attributed to that its stronger steric hindrance is advantageous to decrease not only the ΔEST but also the reorganization energy through intramolecular weak interactions. Based on complex 3, the tert-butyl substituted isomeric complex 4 was designed. Complex 4 further amplifies the advantages of 3 to further promote the RISC to make full use of excitons. Meanwhile, it has an emission wavelength of 462.6 nm, which makes it an excellent candidate for high-efficiency deep-blue TADF materials. This study provides valuable information for obtaining efficient blue phosphorescence and TADF dual-channel luminescent materials.

Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) Materials Based on Earth-Abundant Transition Metal Complexes: Synthesis, Design and Applications

Materials exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) based on transition metal complexes are currently gathering significant attention due to their technological potential. Their application extends beyond optoelectronics, in particular organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs), and include also photocatalysis, sensing, and X-ray scintillators. From the perspective of sustainability, earth-abundant metal centers are preferred to rarer second- and third-transition series elements, thus determining a reduction in costs and toxicity but without compromising the overall performances. This review offers an overview of earth-abundant transition metal complexes exhibiting TADF and their application as photoconversion materials. Particular attention is devoted to the types of ligands employed, helping in the design of novel systems with enhanced TADF properties.

A luminescent Cu2I2P2S2-type binuclear complex and its fluorescence sensing for pyridine

Luminescent CuI complexes are an important class of coordination compounds due to their relative abundance, low cost and ability to display excellent luminescence. The title Cu2I2P2S2-type binuclear complex, di-μ-iodido-bis[(thiourea-κS)(triphenylphosphine-κP)copper(I)], [Cu2I2(CH4N2S)2(C18H15P)2], conventionally abbreviated as Cu2I2TPP2TU2, where TPP and TU represent triphenylphosphine and thiourea, respectively, is described. In this complex, each CuI atom adopts a CuI2PS four-coordination mode and pairs of atoms are connected to each other by two μ2-I ligands to form a centrosymmetric binuclear cluster. It was also found that the paper-based film of this complex exhibited obvious luminescence light-up sensing for pyridine and 4-methylpyridine.

Thermo-responsive emission induced by different delocalized excited-states in isomorphous Pd(ii) and Pt(ii) one-dimensional chains

The self-assembly of d8 transition metal complexes is essential for the development of optoelectronic and sensing materials with superior photofunctional properties. However, detailed insight into the electronic delocalization of excited states across multiple molecules, particularly in comparing 5d8 (Pt(ii)) and 4d8 (Pd(ii)) systems, remains ambiguous but important. In this study, we have successfully evaluated the differences in the excited-state delocalization and thermal responses of self-assembled Pt(ii) and Pd(ii) complexes. Although the complexes presented herein, K[M(CN)2(dFppy)]·H2O (M = Pt or Pd, dFppy = 2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinate), are crystallographically isomorphous with similarly short metal⋯metal contacts, only the Pt(ii) complex exhibited thermal equilibria between delocalized excited states, resulting in a drastic thermochromic luminescence with a red-shift of greater than 100 nm. In contrast, the dimeric localized emission from the Pd(ii) complex showed a significant increase in the quantum yield upon cooling, approaching almost unity.

Interfacial Hydrogen-Bond Interactions Driven Assembly toward Polychromatic Copper Nanoclusters

Constructing versatile metal nanoclusters (NCs) assemblies through noncovalent weak interactions between inter-ligands is a long-standing challenge in interfacial chemistry, while compelling interfacial hydrogen-bond-driven metal NCs assemblies remain unexplored so far. Here, the study reports an amination-ligand o-phenylenediamine-coordinated copper NCs (CuNCs), demonstrating the impact of interfacial hydrogen-bonds (IHBs) motifs on the luminescent behaviors of metal NCs as the alteration of protic solvent. Experimental results supported by theoretical calculation unveil that the flexibility of interfacial ligand and the distance of cuprophilic CuI···CuI interaction between intra-/inter-NCs can be tailored by manipulating the cooperation between the diverse IHBs motifs reconstruction, therewith the IHBs-modulated fundamental structure-property relationships are established. Importantly, by utilizing the IHBs-mediated optical polychromatism of aminated CuNCs, portable visualization of humidity sensing test-strips with fast response is successfully manufactured. This work not only provides further insights into exploring the interfacial chemistry of NCs based on inter-ligands hydrogen-bond interactions, but also offers a new opportunity to expand the practical application for optical sensing of metal NCs.

Synthetic progress of organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters via C-H activation and functionalization

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have become increasingly prominent due to their promising applications across various fields, prompting a continuous demand for developing reliable synthetic methods to access them. This review aims to highlight the progress made in the last decade in synthesizing organic TADF compounds through C-H bond activation and functionalization. The review begins with a brief introduction to the basic features and design principles of TADF emitters. It then provides an overview of the advantages and concise development of C-H bond transformations in constructing TADF emitters. Subsequently, it summarizes both transition-metal-catalyzed and non-transition-metal-promoted C-H bond transformations used for the synthesis of TADF emitters. Finally, the review gives an outlook on further challenges and potential directions in this field.

Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescent Binuclear Copper(I) Alkynyl Complexes with Cuprophilic Interactions

Copper(I)-based thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have been conceived to be promising candidates for display and lighting applications because of their multifarious structures and strong photoluminescence. Herein a string of binuclear Cu(I) complexes bearing pronounced cuprophilic interactions have been designed and synthesized. [Cu2(dppb)2(μ2-η1-C≡C-Ph)2] (1 a) and [Cu2(dppb)2(μ2-η1-C≡C-PPXZ)2] (1 b) display photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 67 % in doped films and solid states via TADF and exhibit reversible bicolor luminescence switching upon mechanical stimuli. Computational studies manifest that the metal-to-ligand charge transfer predominant transitions ensure a small energy splitting (ΔEST) between the lowest singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) excited states and cuprophilic interactions promote the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), favoring the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process. This study provides a new strategy for the construction of stimuli-responsive metal-based TADF materials.

Bright near-infrared emission from the Au39(SR)29 nanocluster

The synthesis of atomically precise gold nanoclusters with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in the near-infrared (NIR) region and understanding their photoluminescence mechanism are crucial for both fundamental science and practical applications. Herein, we report a highly luminescent, molecularly pure Au39(PET)29 (PET = 2-phenylethanethiolate) nanocluster with PLQY of 19% in the NIR range (915 nm). Steady state and time-resolved PL analyses, as well as temperature-dependent PL measurements reveal the emission nature of Au39(PET)29, which consists of prompt fluorescence (weak), thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), and phosphorescence (predominant). Furthermore, strong dipole-dipole interaction in the solid-state (e.g., Au39(PET)29 nanoclusters embedded in a polystyrene thin-film) is found to narrow the energy gap between the S1 and T1 states, which results in faster intersystem crossing and reverse intersystem crossing; thus, the ratio of TADF to phosphorescence varies and the total PLQY is increased to 32%. This highly luminescent nanocluster holds promise in imaging, sensing and optoelectronic applications.

Two-Coordinate Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Coinage Metal Complexes: Molecular Design, Photophysical Characters, and Device Application

Since the emergence of the first green light emission from a fluorescent thin-film organic light emitting diode (OLED) in the mid-1980s, a global consumer market for OLED displays has flourished over the past few decades. This growth can primarily be attributed to the development of noble metal phosphorescent emitters that facilitated remarkable gains in electrical conversion efficiency, a broadened color gamut, and vibrant image quality for OLED displays. Despite these achievements, the limited abundance of noble metals in the Earth's crust has spurred ongoing efforts to discover cost-effective electroluminescent materials. One particularly promising avenue is the exploration of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), a mechanism with the potential to fully harness excitons in OLEDs. Recently, investigations have unveiled TADF in a series of two-coordinate coinage metal (Cu, Ag, and Au) complexes. These organometallic TADF materials exhibit distinctive behavior in comparison to their organic counterparts. They offer benefits such as tunable emissive colors, short TADF emission lifetimes, high luminescent quantum yields, and reasonable stability. Impressively, both vacuum-deposited and solution-processed OLEDs incorporating these materials have achieved outstanding performance. This review encompasses various facets on two-coordinate TADF coinage metal complexes, including molecular design, photophysical characterizations, elucidation of structure-property relationships, and OLED applications.

Efficient and bright broadband electroluminescence based on environment-friendly metal halide nanoclusters

Broadband electroluminescence based on environment-friendly emitters is promising for healthy lighting yet remains an unprecedented challenge to progress. The copper halide-based emitters are competitive candidates for broadband emission, but their high-performance electroluminescence shows inadequate broad emission bandwidth of less than 90 nm. Here, we demonstrate efficient ultra-broadband electroluminescence from a copper halide (CuI) nanocluster single emitter prepared by a one-step solution synthesis-deposition process, through dedicated design of ligands and subtle selection of solvents. The CuI nanocluster exhibits high rigidity in the excitation state as well as dual-emissive modes of phosphorescence and temperature-activated delayed fluorescence, enabling the uniform cluster-composed film to show excellent stability and high photoluminescent efficiency. In consequence, ultra-broadband light-emitting diodes (LEDs) present nearly identical performance in an inert or air atmosphere without encapsulation and outstanding high-temperature operation performance, reaching an emission full width at half maximum (FWHM) of ~120 nm, a peak external quantum efficiency of 13%, a record maximum luminance of ~50,000 cd m-2, and an operating half-lifetime of 137 h at 100 cd m-2. The results highlight the potential of copper halide nanoclusters for next-generation healthy lighting.

Introducing sterically demanding substituents and π-π-interactions into [Cu(P^P)(N^N)]+ complexes

A series of ten N^N chelating ligands based on a 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) metal-binding domain and featuring sterically hindering substituents in the 6- and 6,6'-positions has been synthesized and characterized. The ligands have been incorporated into a family of 15 heteroleptic complexes of type [Cu(P^P)(N^N)][PF6] where P^P is the wide bite-angle bisphosphane ligand bis(2(diphenylphosphanyl)phenyl)ether (POP) or (9,9-dimethyl-9H-xanthene-4,5-diyl)bis(diphenylphosphane) (xantphos). Substituents in several of the N^N ligands ligands possess phenyl rings remotely tethered to enable intra- and intermolecular π-π-interactions in the [Cu(P^P)(N^N)]+ cations. Single crystal X-ray structures of 12 complexes are reported. The effects of the functional groups in the bpy ligand on the photophysical properties of the complexes have been studied; solid-state emission maxima range from 518 to 567 nm. Values of the solid-state photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of the [Cu(P^P)(N^N)][PF6] compounds respond to the nature of the N^N ligand. In general, we observed that the [Cu(P^P)(N^N)]+ complexes containing 6,6'-disubstituted complexes with phenyl moieties connected via a CH2CH2 or CH2CH2CH2 spacer to the bpy domain have the highest values of PLQY. The most significant compounds are [Cu(POP)((2-PhEt)2bpy)][PF6] (PLQY = 67%) and [Cu(POP)((3-PhPr)2bpy)][PF6] (PLQY = 72%) where (2-PhEt)2bpy = 6,6'-bis(2-phenylethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine and (3-PhPr)2bpy = 6,6'-bis(3-phenylpropyl)-2,2'-bipyridine. These PLQY values are among the best performing previously reported families of [Cu(P^P)(N^N)][PF6] compounds.

Tunable Self-Referenced Molecular Thermometers via Manipulation of Dual Emission in Platinum(II) Pyridinedipyrrolide Complexes

Optical temperature sensors based on self-referenced readout schemes such as the emission ratio and the decay time are crucial for a wide range of applications, with the former often preferred due to simplicity of instrumentation. This work describes a new group of dually emitting dyes, platinum(II) pincer complexes, that can be used directly for ratiometric temperature sensing without an additional reference material. They consist of Pt(II) metal center surrounded by a pyridinedipyrrolide ligand (PDP) and a terminal ligand (benzonitrile, pyridine, 1-butylimidazol or carbon monoxide). Upon excitation with blue light, these complexes exhibit green to orange emission, with quantum yields in anoxic toluene at 25 °C ranging from 13% to 86% and decay times spanning from 8.5 to 97 μs. The emission is attributed to simultaneous thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and phosphorescence processes on the basis of photophysical investigations and DFT calculations. Rather uniquely, simple manipulations in substituents of the PDP ligand and alteration of the terminal ligand allow fine-tuning of the ratio between TADF and phosphorescence from almost 100% TADF emission (Pt(MesPDPC6F5(BN)) to over 80% of phosphorescence (Pt(PhPDPPh(BuIm)). Apart from ratiometric capabilities, the complexes also are useful as decay time-based temperature indicators with temperature coefficients exceeding 1.5% K-1 in most cases. Immobilization of the dyes into oxygen-impermeable polyacrylonitrile produces temperature sensing materials that can be read out with an ordinary RGB camera or a smartphone. In addition, Pt(PhPDPPh)Py can be incorporated into biocompatible RL100 nanoparticles suitable for cellular nanothermometry, as we demonstrate with temperature measurements in multicellular colon cancer spheroids.

Triplet Excited-State Dynamics in Benzothiadiazole-Based Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Compound

The "hot exciton" thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have attracted considerable research interest for their utilization of high-lying triplet excitons. In this work, we reported the mechanism of photoluminescence by revealing the spectral evolution from singlet to triplet states in "hot exciton" TADF molecules by transient absorption (TA) spectra and triplet sensitization experiments. The internal conversion and intersystem crossing are much faster than reverse intersystem crossing (RISC), so that high-lying triplet states (Tn) are difficult to accumulate to be observed in the transient absorption spectra. In contrast, the emergence of delayed fluorescence in time-resolved emission spectra demonstrates the existence of a high-lying RISC process (hRISC) from Tn to S1. Triplet sensitization experiments successfully identified the spectral features of the T1 state in the TA spectra. This work sheds light on critical factors for the systematic design of these materials to achieve a high emission quantum yield.

White light emission in 0D halide perovskite [(CH3)3S]2SnCl6·H2O crystals through variation of doping ns2 ions

With the rapid development of white LEDs, the research of new and efficient white light emitting materials has attracted increasing attention. Zero dimensional (0D) organic-inorganic hybrid metal halide perovskites with superior luminescent property are promising candidates for LED application, due to their abundant and tailorable structure. Herein, [(CH3)3S]2SnCl6·H2O is synthesized as a host for dopant ions Bi3+ and Sb3+. The Sb3+ doped, or Bi3+/Sb3+ co-doped, [(CH3)3S]2SnCl6·H2O has a tunable optical emission spectrum by means of varying dopant ratio and excitation wavelength. As a result, we can achieve single-phase materials suitable for emission ranging from cold white light to warm white light. The intrinsic mechanism is examined in this work, to clarify the dopant effect on the optical properties. The high stability of title crystalline material, against water, oxygen and heat, makes it promising for further application.

Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF)-active Coinage-metal Sulfide Clusters for High-resolution X-ray Imaging

The study of facile-synthesis and low-cost X-ray scintillators with high light yield, low detection limit and high X-ray imaging resolution plays a vital role in medical and industrial imaging fields. However, the optimal balance between X-ray absorption, decay lifetime and excitonic utilization efficiency of scintillators to achieve high-resolution imaging is extremely difficult due to the inherent contradiction. Here two thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF)-actived coinage-metal clusters M6 S6 L6 (M=Ag or Cu) were synthesized by simple solvothermal reaction, where the cooperation of heavy atom-rich character and TADF mechanism supports strong X-ray absorption and rapid luminescent collection of excitons. Excitingly, Ag6 S6 L6 (SC-Ag) displays a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 91.6 % and scintillating light yield of 17420 photons MeV-1 , as well as a low detection limit of 208.65 nGy s-1 that is 26 times lower than the medical standard (5.5 μGy s-1 ). More importantly, a high X-ray imaging resolution of 16 lp/mm based on SC-Ag screen is demonstrated. Besides, rigid core skeleton reinforced by metallophilicity endows clusters M6 S6 L6 strong resistance to humidity and radiation. This work provides a new view for the design of efficient scintillators and opens the research door for silver clusters in scintillation application.

An effective method in modulating thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters from green to blue emission: the role of the phenyl ring

Developing efficient blue emitters with high performance and low cost is crucial for the further development of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Based on the two experimentally reported green thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters, which are thioxanthone derivatives consisting of carbazole as an electron donor and 9H-thioxanthen-9-one-S,S-dioxide (SOXO) as an electron acceptor with donor-acceptor (D-A) or donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) structures, two new blue TADF emitters are designed by simply inserting a phenyl ring between D and A units. The TADF processes of the four thioxanthone derivatives are studied systematically through first-principles calculations. The role of the introduced phenyl ring in the excited state properties of the designed molecules is explored by analyzing the changes in molecular geometries, frontier molecular orbital distributions, the lowest singlet-triplet energy splitting (ΔEST), the spin orbit coupling (SOC) constants, the radiative decay rates (kr) and the nonradiative decay rates (knr), as well as the intersystem crossing rates (kISC) and reverse intersystem crossing rates (kRISC). The results show that when incorporating phenyl units into the D-A and D-A-D structures, both high kr and enhanced kRISC are achieved in Cz-Ph-SOXO and DCz-DPh-SOXO, demonstrating that incorporating the phenyl unit in D-A and D-A-D structures is an efficient way for developing new SOXO-based TADF molecules. It is worth noting that the kRISC values for Cz-Ph-SOXO and DCz-DPh-SOXO are significantly increased with respect to those of the experimental molecules. The present results would provide helpful guidelines for developing new SOXO-based TADF molecules experimentally.

Visible to NIR-II Photoluminescence of Atomically Precise Gold Nanoclusters

Atomically precise gold nanoclusters (NCs) have emerged as a new class of precision materials and attracted wide interest in recent years. One of the unique properties of such nanoclusters pertains to their photoluminescence (PL), for it can widely span visible to near-infrared-I and -II wavelengths (NIR-I/II), and even beyond 1700 nm by manipulating the size, structure, and composition. The current research efforts focus on the structure-PL correlation and the development of strategies for raising the PL quantum yields, which is nontrivial when moving from the visible to the near-infrared wavelengths, especially in the NIR-II regions. This review summarizes the recent progress in the field, including i) the types of PL observed in gold NCs such as fluorescence, phosphorescence, and thermally activated delayed fluorescence, as well as dual emission; ii) some effective strategies that are devised to improve the PL quantum yield (QY) of gold NCs, such as heterometal doping, surface rigidification, and core phonon engineering, with double-digit QYs for the NIR PL on the horizons; and iii) the applications of luminescent gold NCs in bioimaging, photosensitization, and optoelectronics. Finally, the remaining challenges and opportunities for future research are highlighted.

From Mono- to Polynuclear 2-(Diphenylphosphino)pyridine-Based Cu(I) and Ag(I) Complexes: Synthesis, Structural Characterization, and DFT Calculations

A series of monometallic Ag(I) and Cu(I) halide complexes bearing 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine (PyrPhos, L) as a ligand were synthesized and spectroscopically characterized. The structure of most of the derivatives was unambiguously established by X-ray diffraction analysis, revealing the formation of mono-, di-, and tetranuclear complexes having general formulas MXL3 (M = Cu, X = Cl, Br; M = Ag, X = Cl, Br, I), Ag2X2L3 (X = Cl, Br), and Ag4X4L4 (X = Cl, Br, I). The Ag(I) species were compared to the corresponding Cu(I) analogues from a structural point of view. The formation of Cu(I)/Ag(I) heterobimetallic complexes MM'X2L3 (M/M' = Cu, Ag; X = Cl, Br, I) was also investigated. The X-ray structure of the bromo-derivatives revealed the formation of two possible MM'Br2L3 complexes with Cu/Ag ratios, respectively, of 7:1 and 1:7. The ratio between Cu and Ag was studied by scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) measurements. The structure of the binuclear homo- and heterometallic derivatives was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, revealing the tendency of the PyrPhos ligands not to maintain the bridging motif in the presence of Ag(I) as the metal center.

Photocatalytic C(sp3)-H bond functionalization by Cu(I) halide cluster-mediated O2 activation

Photocatalytic C-H bond activation is a challenging approach to selectively functionalize C(sp3)-H bonds with dioxygen under mild conditions. Herein, by merging transition metal- and photo-catalysis, photoactive Cu(I)-halide(X) (X = Cl, Br, I) clusters are employed to effectively catalyse the selective monooxygenation and C-C oxidative cross-coupling of C(sp3)-H bonds with unreactive O2 upon light irradiation. This modern protocol promises a photoinduced SET process between Cu(I)-clusters and O2, and possibly forms Cu(II)-O2˙- species for abstracting the H-atom from the C(sp3)-H bond. This process produces alkyl radicals to react with -OOH or nucleophiles for oxidation or cross-coupling products, advancing the Cu(I)-cluster mediated photoredox catalysis toward functional fine chemicals with pursued selectivity.

Strategy for an Effective Eco-Optimized Design of Heteroleptic Cu(I) Coordination Polymers Exhibiting Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence

The new series of copper(I) coordination polymers [Cu(N-N)(μ-PTA)]n[PF6]n {N-N = dmbpy (1), bpy (2), ncup (3), and phen (4)} were generated by straightforward reaction in solution or through a mechanochemical route, of [Cu(MeCN)4][PF6] with 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA) and the corresponding polypyridines, namely, 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dmbpy), 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (ncup), and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen). The compounds were obtained as air-stable solids and fully characterized by IR, NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analyses. The molecular structures were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (for 1, 2, and 4), revealing infinite one-dimensional (1D) linear chains driven by μ-PTA N,P-linkers. All tested Cu(I) polymeric compounds show emission at room temperature, which was attributed to thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Evidence of the involvement of the excited singlet state in the emission process is presented. Comparing the photophysical properties of 1 and 2 as well as 3 and 4, of which 1 and 3 have a stiffened structure, by introducing a methyl group to one of the ligands, we demonstrate how TADF properties depend on molecular rigidity. It is shown that stiffening of the structure reduces the flattening distortion around the Cu(I) center in the 3MLCT state. As a result, the ΔE(S1-T1) energy gap becomes smaller and the fluorescence quantum yield increases without significantly extending the emission lifetime. In particular, the ΔE(S1-T1) values for complexes 1 and 3 are among the shortest reported in the scientific literature, 253 and 337 cm-1, and the TADF lifetimes are τ(300 K) = 5.7 and 4.2 μs, respectively. The fluorescence quantum yields for these complexes are measured to be ΦPL(300 K) = 70 and 80%.

Encoding Hole-Particle Information in the Multi-Channel MolOrbImage for Machine-Learned Excited-State Energies of Large Photofunctional Materials

We present a novel class of one-electron multi-channel molecular orbital images (MolOrbImages) designed for the prediction of excited-state energetics in conjunction with the state-of-the-art VGG-type machine-learning architecture. By representing hole and particle states in the excitation process as channels of MolOrbImages, the revised VGG model achieves excellent prediction accuracy for both low-lying singlet and triplet states, with mean absolute errors (MAEs) of <0.08 and <0.1 eV for QM9 molecules and large photofunctional materials with up to 560 atoms, respectively. Remarkably, the model demonstrates exceptional performance (MAE < 1 kcal/mol) for the T1 state of QM9 molecules, making it a non-system-specific model that approaches chemical accuracy. The general rules attained, for instance, the improved performance with well-defined MO energies and the reduced overfitting concern via the inclusion of physically insightful hole-particle information, provide invaluable guidelines for the further design of orbital-based descriptors targeting molecular excited states.

A Rising Star: Luminescent Carbene-Metal-Amide Complexes

Coinage metal (gold, silver, and copper) complexes are attractive candidates to substitute the widely studied noble metal complexes, such as, iridium(III) and platinum(II), as luminescent materials in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, the development of coinage metal complexes exhibiting high emission quantum yields and short exciton lifetimes is still a formidable challenge. In the past few years, coinage metal complexes featuring a carbene-metal-amide (CMA) motif have emerged as a new class of luminescent materials in OLEDs. Thanks to the coinage metal-bridged linear geometry, coplanar conformation, and the formation of excited states with dominant ligand-to-ligand charge transfer character and reduced metal d-orbital participation, most CMA complexes have high radiative rates via thermally activated delayed fluorescence. Currently, the family of CMA complexes have rapidly evolved and remarkable progresses in CMA-based OLEDs have been made. Here, a Concept article on CMA complexes is presented, with a focus on molecular design principles, the correlation between molecular structure/conformation and optoelectronic properties, as well as OLED performance. The future prospects of CMA complexes are also discussed.

Polymeric copper(I)-NHC complexes with bulky bidentate (N^C) ligands: synthesis and solid-state luminescence

Starting from imidazolium chlorides bearing bulky nitrogen donors, a series of four complexes, mainly [Cu(C^N)Cl]n coordination polymers were obtained directly as luminescent species by simple filtration from the aqueous reaction medium, highlighting a simple, eco-friendly, robust and reproducible synthetic procedure. Additionally, we have shown on the most efficient example that chloride could be exchanged very easily by other halides/pseudohalides (Br-, I-, NCS-, N3-) allowing to slightly modulate the emitted colour while conserving the polymeric structure, except for azide for which a dimer was obtained. The combination of chemical analyses, of photoluminescence studies in the solid state including quantum yield measurement and X-ray diffraction on single crystals and as-synthesized microcrystalline powders highlighted that the polymeric luminescent species was indeed obtained directly by simple filtration and that no major alteration of the structure was observed upon recrystallisation. Samples of all polymeric complexes displayed remarkable stability towards air oxidation remaining unchanged upon storage for several months and partially retaining their photoluminescence properties even after a thermal treatment at 100 °C for 24 h.

Ultralow-loss Optical Waveguides through Balancing Deep-Blue TADF and Orange Room Temperature Phosphorescence in Hybrid Antimony Halide Microstructures

Harnessing the potential of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is crucial for developing light-emitting diodes (LEDs), lasers, sensors, and many others. However, effective strategies in this domain are still relatively scarce. This study presents a new approach to achieving highly efficient deep-blue TADF (with a PLQY of 25 %) and low-energy orange RTP (with a PLQY of 90 %) through the fabrication of lead-free hybrid halides. This new class of monomeric and dimeric 0D antimony halides can be facilely synthesized using a bottom-up solution process, requiring only a few seconds to minutes, which offer exceptional stability and nontoxicity. By leveraging the highly adaptable molecular arrangement and crystal packing modes, the hybrid antimony halides demonstrate the ability to self-assemble into regular 1D microrod and 2D microplate morphologies. This self-assembly is facilitated by multiple non-covalent interactions between the inorganic cores and organic shells. Notably, these microstructures exhibit outstanding polarized luminescence and function as low-dimensional optical waveguides with remarkably low optical-loss coefficients. Therefore, this work not only presents a pioneering demonstration of deep-blue TADF in hybrid antimony halides, but also introduces 1D and 2D micro/nanostructures that hold promising potential for applications in white LEDs and low-dimensional photonic systems.

Multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence molecules with intramolecular-lock: theoretical design and performance prediction

Multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) molecules with narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) have attracted much attention recently. In this work, 36 borane/amine (B/N) type MR-TADF molecules were theoretically designed by using an intramolecular-lock strategy and systematically studied based on first-principles calculations. It was found that intramolecular-lock at different positions and in different manners could induce different luminescent properties. The calculated oscillator strengths for PXZ-L2 and PTZ-L2 locking systems are weaker than that for 2DPABN (without intramolecular-lock), while the Cz-L1 and TMCZ-L1 locking could result in stronger oscillator strength. Though the calculated FWHM of all the systems with intramolecular-lock is higher than that of 2DPABN, the Cz, TMCz and DMAC locking at L1 or L2 would induce relatively small FWHM which is comparable to that of 2DPABN. Our calculation results indicate that intramolecular-lock could enhance the SOC values and decrease the energy gap between the first singlet excited state and the first triplet excited state, which is quite favorable to reverse intersystem crossing. The Cz, TMCz and DMAC locking systems could realize comparable and higher efficiency than 2DPABN, thus higher quantum efficiency could be obtained. Our calculation results indicate that the intramolecular-lock strategy is an effective method to realize the design of highly efficient MR-TADF emitters.

Elucidating the Near-Infrared Photoluminescence Mechanism of Homometal and Doped M25(SR)18 Nanoclusters

More than a decade of research on the photoluminescence (PL) of classic Au25(SR)18 and its doped nanoclusters (NCs) still leaves many fundamental questions unanswered due to the complex electron dynamics. Here, we revisit the homogold Au25 (ligands omitted hereafter) and doped NCs, as well as the Ag25 and doped ones, for a comparative study to disentangle the influencing factors and elucidate the PL mechanism. We find that the strong electron-vibration coupling in Au25 leads to weak PL in the near-infrared region (∼1000 nm, quantum yield QY = 1% in solution at room temperature). Heteroatom doping of Au25 with a single Cd or Hg atom strengthens the coupling of the exciton with staple vibrations but reduces the coupling with the core breathing and quadrupolar modes. The QYs of the three MAu24 NCs (M = Hg, Au, and Cd) follow a linear relation with their PL lifetimes, suggesting a mechanism of suppressed nonradiative decay in PL enhancement. In contrast, the weaker electron-vibration coupling in Ag25 leads to higher PL (QY = 3.5%), and single Au atom doping further leads to a 5× enhancement of the radiative rate and a suppression of nonradiative decay rate (i.e., twice the PL lifetime of Ag25) in AuAg24 (hence, QY 35%), but doping more Au atoms results in gold distribution to staple motifs and thus triggering of strong electron-vibration coupling as in the MAu24 NCs, hence, counteracting the radiative enhancement effect and giving rise to only 5% QY for AuxAg25-x (x = 3-10). The obtained insights will provide guidance for the design of metal NCs with high PL for lighting, sensing, and optoelectronic applications.

pH-Switching of the luminescent, redox, and magnetic properties in a spin crossover cobalt(ii) molecular nanomagnet

The ability of mononuclear first-row transition metal complexes as dynamic molecular systems to perform selective functions under the control of an external stimulus that appropriately tunes their properties may greatly impact several domains of molecular nanoscience and nanotechnology. This study focuses on two mononuclear octahedral cobalt(ii) complexes of formula {[CoII(HL)2][CoII(HL)L]}(ClO4)3·9H2O (1) and [CoIIL2]·5H2O (2) [HL = 4'-(4-carboxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine], isolated as a mixed protonated/hemiprotonated cationic salt or a deprotonated neutral species. This pair of pH isomers constitutes a remarkable example of a dynamic molecular system exhibiting reversible changes in luminescence, redox, and magnetic (spin crossover and spin dynamics) properties as a result of ligand deprotonation, either in solution or solid state. In this last case, the thermal-assisted spin transition coexists with the field-induced magnetisation blockage of "faster" or "slower" relaxing low-spin CoII ions in 1 or 2, respectively. In addition, pH-reversible control of the acid-base equilibrium among dicationic protonated, cationic hemiprotonated, and neutral deprotonated forms in solution enhances luminescence in the UV region. Besides, the reversibility of the one-electron oxidation of the paramagnetic low-spin CoII into the diamagnetic low-spin CoIII ion is partially lost and completely restored by pH decreasing and increasing. The fine-tuning of the optical, redox, and magnetic properties in this novel class of pH-responsive, spin crossover molecular nanomagnets offers fascinating possibilities for advanced multifunctional and multiresponsive magnetic devices for molecular spintronics and quantum computing such as pH-effect spin quantum transformers.

Development of Blue Phosphorescent Pt(II) Materials Using Dibenzofuranyl Imidazole Ligands and Their Application in Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are energy-efficient; however, the coordinating ligand can affect their stability. Sky-blue phosphorescent Pt(II) compounds with a C^N chelate, fluorinated-dbi (dbi = [1-(2,4-diisopropyldibenzo [b,d]furan-3-yl)-2-phenyl-1H-imidazole]), and acetylactonate (acac) (1)/picolinate (pic) (2) ancillary ligands were synthesized. The molecular structures were characterized using various spectroscopic methods. The Pt(II) Compound Two exhibited a distorted square planar geometry, with several intra- and inter-molecular interactions involving C_π⋯H/C_π⋯C_π stacking. Complex One emitted bright sky-blue light (λ_max = 485 nm) with a moderate photoluminescent quantum efficiency (PLQY) of 0.37 and short decay time (6.1 µs) compared to those of 2. Theoretical calculations suggested that the electronic transition of 1 arose from ligand(C^N)-centered π-π* transitions combined with metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT), whereas that of 2 arose from MLCT and ligand(C^N)-to-ligand(pic) charge-transfer (LLCT), with minimal contribution from C^N chelate to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO). Multi-layered phosphorescent OLEDs using One as a dopant and a mixed host, mCBP/CNmCBPCN, were successfully fabricated. At a 10% doping concentration of 1, a current efficiency of 13.6 cdA^-1 and external quantum efficiency of 8.4% at 100 cdm^-2 were achieved. These results show that the ancillary ligand in phosphorescent Pt(II) complexes must be considered.

Delayed luminescence guided enhanced circularly polarized emission in atomically precise copper nanoclusters

Metal nanoclusters, owing to their intriguing optical properties, have captivated research interest over the years. Of special interest have been chiral nanoclusters that display optical activity in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. While the ground state chiral properties of metal nanoclusters have been reasonably well studied, of late research focus has shifted attention to their excited state chiral investigations. Herein, we report the synthesis and chiral investigations of a pair of enantiomerically pure copper nanoclusters that exhibit intense optical activity, both in their ground and excited states. The synthesis of nanoclusters using l- and d-isomers of the chiral ligand led to the formation of metal clusters that displayed mirror image circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence signals. Structural validation using single crystal XRD, powder XRD and XPS in conjunction with chiroptical and computational analysis helped to develop a structure-property correlation that is unique to such clusters. Investigations on the mechanism of photoluminescence revealed that the system exhibits long excited state lifetimes. A combination of delayed luminescence and chirality resulted in circularly polarized delayed luminescence, a phenomenon that is rather uncommon to the field of metal clusters. The chiral emissive properties could be successfully demonstrated in free-standing polymeric films highlighting their potential for use in the field of data encryption, security tags and polarized light emitting devices. Moreover, the fundamental understanding of the mechanism of excited state chirality in copper clusters opens avenues for the exploration of similar effects in a variety of other clusters.

Heterometallic Au(I)-Cu(I) Clusters: Luminescence Studies and 1O2 Production

Two different organometallic gold(I) compounds containing naphthalene and phenanthrene as fluorophores and 2-pyridyldiphenylphosphane as the ancillary ligand were synthesized (compounds 1 with naphthalene and 2 with phenanthrene). They were reacted with three different copper(I) salts with different counterions (PF₆^-, OTf^-, and BF₄^-; OTf = triflate) to obtain six Au(I)/Cu(I) heterometallic clusters (compounds 1a-c for naphthalene derivatives and 2a-c for phenanthrene derivatives). The heterometallic compounds present red pure room-temperature phosphorescence in both solution, the solid state, and air-equilibrated samples, as a difference with the dual emission recorded for the gold(I) precursors 1 and 2. The presence of Au(I)-Cu(I) metallophilic contacts has been identified using single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure resolution of two of the compounds, which play a direct role in the resulting red-shifted emission with respect to the gold(I) homometallic precursors. Polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymeric matrices were doped with our luminescent compounds, and the resulting changes in their emissive properties were analyzed and compared with those previously recorded in the solution and the solid state. All complexes were tested to analyze their ability to produce ¹O₂ and present very good values of Φ_Δ up to 50%.

Self-Consistent Quantum Mechanics/Embedded Charge Study on Aggregation-Enhanced Delayed Fluorescence of Cu(I) Complexes: Luminescence Mechanism and Molecular Design Strategy

To elucidate the luminescence mechanism of highly efficient blue Cu(N^N)(POP)⁺-type thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials, we have selected Cu(pytfmpz)(POP)⁺ (1) and Cu(pympz)(POP)⁺ (2) as targets to investigate the photophysical properties in both solution and solid phases. The self-consistent electrostatic potential (ESP) embedded charge within the quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method demonstrates a greater advantage over the charge equilibrium (QEQ) in accurately calculating atomic charges and reasonably describing the polarization effect, ultimately resulting in a favorable consistency between simulation and experimental measurements. After systematic and quantitative simulation, it has been found that complex 2, with an electron-donating group of -CH₃, exhibits a much more blue-shifted spectrum and a significantly enhanced efficiency in comparison to complex 1 with -CF₃. This is due to the widened HOMO-LUMO gap as well as the narrowed energy gap between the lowest singlet and triplet excited states (ΔE_ST), respectively. Then, the designed complex 3 is introduced with a stronger electron donor and larger tert-butyl group, which plays a key role in simultaneously suppressing the structural distortion and reducing the ΔE_ST. This leads to a faster reverse intersystem crossing process than that of the two experimental complexes in solution, turning out to be a new deep-blue-emitting material with excellent TADF performance.

Noncovalent Chelation by Halogen Bonding in the Design of Metal-Containing Arrays: Assembly of Double σ-Hole Donating Halolium with CuI-Containing O,O-Donors

Five new copper(I) complexes─composed of the paired dibenzohalolium and [CuL₂]^- (L = 1,2,4-oxadiazolate) counterions in which O,O-atoms of the anion are simultaneously linked to the halogen atom─were generated and isolated as the solid via the three-component reaction between [Cu(MeCN)₄](BF₄), sodium 1,2,4-oxadiazolates, and dibenzohalolium triflates (or trifluoroacetates). This reaction is different from the previously reported Cu^I-catalyzed arylation of 1,2,4-oxadiazolones by diaryliodonium salts. Inspection of the solid-state X-ray structures of the complexes revealed the strong three-center X···O,O (X = Br, I) halogen bonding occurred between the oxadiazolate moieties and dibenzohalolium cation. According to performed theoretical calculations, this noncovalent interaction (or noncovalent chelation) was recognized as the main force in the stabilization of the copper(I) complexes. An explanation for the different behavior of complexes, which provide either chelate or nonchelate binding, is based on the occurrence of additional -CH₃···π interactions, which were also quantified.

A family of CuI-based 1D polymers showing colorful short-lived TADF and phosphorescence induced by photo- and X-ray irradiation

Exploiting 2-(alkylsulfonyl)pyridines as 1,3-N,S-ligands, herein we have constructed 1D CuI-based coordination polymers (CPs) bearing unprecedented (CuI)_n chains and possessing remarkable photophysical properties. At room temperature, these CPs show efficient TADF, phosphorescence or dual emission in the deep-blue to red range with outstandingly short decay times of 0.4-2.0 μs and good quantum performance. Owing to great structural diversity, the CPs demonstrate a variety of emissive mechanisms, spanning from TADF of ¹(M + X)LCT type to ³CC and ³(M + X)LCT phosphorescence. Moreover, the designed compounds emit strong X-ray radioluminescence with the quantum efficiency of up to an impressive 55% relative to all-inorganic BGO scintillators. The presented findings push the boundaries in designing TADF and triplet emitters with very short decay times.

TADF and X-ray Radioluminescence of New Cu(I) Halide Complexes: Different Halide Effects on These Processes

A series of complexes [Cu2X2(Pic3PO)2] (X = Cl, Br, I) based on tris(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)phosphine oxide (Pic3PO) has been synthesized. At 298 K, these compounds exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) of 1(M+X)LCT type with λmax varying from 485 to 545 nm, and quantum efficiency up to 54%. In the TADF process, the halide effect appears as the emission intensification and bathochromic shift of λmax in the following order X = I < Br < Cl. Upon X-ray irradiation, the title compounds emit radioluminescence, the emission bands of which have the same shape as those at TADF, thereby meaning a similar radiative excited state. By contrast to TADF, the halide effect in the radioluminescence is reversed: its intensity grows in the order X = Cl < Br < I, since heavier atoms absorb X-rays more efficiently. These findings essentially contribute to our knowledge about the halide effect in the photo- and radioluminescent Cu(I) halide emitters.

TADF Invariant of Host Polarity and Ultralong Fluorescence Lifetimes in a Donor-Acceptor Emitter Featuring a Hybrid Sulfone-Triarylboron Acceptor

10H-Dibenzo[b,e][1,4]thiaborinine 5,5-dioxide (SO2B)-a high triplet (T₁ =3.05 eV) strongly electron-accepting boracycle was successfully utilised in thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters PXZ-Dipp-SO2B and CZ-Dipp-SO2B. We demonstrate the near-complete separation of highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals leading to a low oscillator strength of the S₁ →S₀ CT transition, resulting in very long ca. 83 ns and 400 ns prompt fluorescence lifetimes for CZ-Dipp-SO2B and PXZ-Dipp-SO2B, respectively, but retaining near unity photoluminescence quantum yield. OLEDs using CZ-Dipp-SO2B as the luminescent dopant display high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 23.3 % and maximum luminance of 18600 cd m^-2 with low efficiency roll off at high brightness. For CZ-Dipp-SO2B, reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) is mediated through the vibronic coupling of two charge transfer (CT) states, without involving the triplet local excited state (³ LE), resulting in remarkable rISC rate invariance to environmental polarity and polarisability whilst giving high organic light-emitting diode (OLED) efficiency. This new form of rISC allows stable OLED performance to be achieved in different host environments.

A Configurationally Confined Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescent Two-Coordinate CuI Complex for Efficient Blue Electroluminescence

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) from linear two-coordinate coinage metal complexes is sensitive to the geometric arrangement of the ligands. Herein we realize the tuning of configuration from coplanar to orthogonal gradually by variation of substituents. In a complex with confined twist configuration, its blue emission peaking at 458 nm presents a high Φ_PL of 0.74 and a short τ_TADF of 1.9 μs, which indicates a fast enough k_r,TADF of 3.9×10⁵  s^-1 and a depressed k_nr of 1.4×10⁵  s^-1 . Such outstanding luminescent properties are attributed to the proper overlap of HOMO and LUMO on Cu^I d orbitals that guarantees not only small ΔE_ST but also sufficient transition oscillator strength for fast k r , S 1 ${{k}_{{\rm r},{{\rm S}}_{1}}}$ . Vacuum-deposited blue OLEDs with either doped or host-free emissive layer present external quantum efficiencies over 20 % and 10 %, respectively, demonstrating the practicality of the configurationally confined strategy for efficient linear Cu^I TADF emitters.

Deep-Blue Emissive Copper(I) Complexes Based on P-Thiophenylethyl-Substituted Cyclic Bisphosphines Displaying Photoinduced Structural Transformations of the Excited States

A synthetic method for a primary 2-(thiophen-2'-yl)ethylphosphine was developed. The reaction of thiophenylethylphosphine with paraformaldehyde and primary arylamines leads to the formation of cyclic bisphosphines, namely, 1,5-di(aryl)-3,7-bis(thiophenylethyl)-1,5-diaza-3,7-diphosphacyclooctane (aryl = phenyl, p-tolyl). The obtained bisphosphines form cationic bis-P,P-chelate complexes with copper(I) tetrafluoroborate, which were structurally characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental and XRD analyses. Surprisingly, the copper(I) complexes display a multiband emission in the solid state with maxima at 355-360, 425-430, and 480-490 nm and nanosecond lifetimes (1.2-1.4 ns) upon a 335 nm excitation. The excitation of the complexes at 360 nm at room temperature results in a deep-blue emission at 425-430 nm and a tail at 460-490 nm. A temperature decrease leads to an increased intensity of the emission band at 480 nm, while the luminescence lifetimes insignificantly increased up to 14 ns. Quantum chemical calculations explain the observed unusual luminescent behavior by the existence of "undistorted" and "flattened" singlet excited states of copper(I) complexes at room temperature and at 77 K, respectively.

Tris(2-Pyridyl)Arsine as a New Platform for Design of Luminescent Cu(I) and Ag(I) Complexes

The coordination behavior of tris(2-pyridyl)arsine (Py₃As) has been studied for the first time on the example of the reactions with CuI, CuBr and AgClO₄. When treated with CuI in CH₂Cl₂ medium, Py₃As unexpectedly affords the scorpionate complex [Cu(Py₃As)I]∙CH₂Cl₂ only, while this reaction in MeCN selectively leads to the dimer [Cu₂(Py₃As)₂I₂]. At the same time, the interaction of CuBr with Py₃As exclusively gives the dimer [Cu₂(Py₃As)₂Br₂]. It is interesting to note that the scorpionate [Cu(Py₃As)I]∙CH₂Cl₂, upon fuming with a MeCN vapor (r.t., 1 h), undergoes quantitative dimerization into the dimer [Cu₂(Py₃As)₂I₂]. The reaction of Py₃As with AgClO₄ produces complex [Ag@Ag₄(Py₃As)₄](CIO₄)₅ featuring a Ag-centered Ag₄ tetrahedral kernel. At ambient temperature, the obtained Cu(I) complexes exhibit an unusually short-lived photoluminescence, which can be tentatively assigned to the thermally activated delayed fluorescence of (M + X) LCT type (M = Cu, L = Py₃As; X = halogen). For the title Ag(I) complexes, QTAIM calculations reveal the pronounced argentophilic interactions for all short Ag∙∙∙Ag contacts (3.209–3.313 Å).

Trigonal Copper(I) Complexes with Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbene Ligands for Single-Photon Near-IR Triplet Emission

Molecular near-IR (NIR) triplet-state emitters are of importance for the development of new, organic-electronics-based telecommunication technologies as optical fibers operating in the corresponding spectral bands allow for data transfer over much longer distances due to the significantly lower attenuation. However, achieving such low-energy triplet excited states with good radiative rate constants is very challenging, and studies regarding the single-photon emission of organometallics in this energy range are scarce. We have prepared a series of trigonal Cu^I CAAC complexes bearing chelating ligands with O, N, S, and Se donor atoms and studied their photophysical properties in this context. The compounds show weak low-energy absorption in solution between 400 and 500 nm due to mixed Cu → CAAC ¹MLCT/LLCT states, resulting in yellow-green to orange appearance, which we have also correlated to the ¹⁵N NMR resonances of the π-accepting carbene ligand. In the solid state, phosphorescence from dominant ³(Cu → CAAC) CT states is observed at room temperature. The emission of the complexes is bathochromically shifted in comparison to structurally related linearly coordinated copper(I) CAAC complexes due to structural reorganization in the excited state to a T-shape. For [Cu(dbm)(CAAC^Me)], the broad phosphorescence with outstanding λ_max = 760 nm tailors out to ca. 1100 nm and leads to its proof-of-concept application as a nonclassical single-photon light source, constituting key functional units for the implementation of tap-proof data transfer.

Excited-State Lifetime Modulation by Twisted and Tilted Molecular Design in Carbene-Metal-Amide Photoemitters

Carbene-metal-amides (CMAs) are an emerging class of photoemitters based on a linear donor-linker-acceptor arrangement. They exhibit high flexibility about the carbene-metal and metal-amide bonds, leading to a conformational freedom which has a strong influence on their photophysical properties. Herein we report CMA complexes with (1) nearly coplanar, (2) twisted, (3) tilted, and (4) tilt-twisted orientations between donor and acceptor ligands and illustrate the influence of preferred ground-state conformations on both the luminescence quantum yields and excited-state lifetimes. The performance is found to be optimum for structures with partially twisted and/or tilted conformations, resulting in radiative rates exceeding 1 × 106 s-1. Although the metal atoms make only small contributions to HOMOs and LUMOs, they provide sufficient spin-orbit coupling between the low-lying excited states to reduce the excited-state lifetimes down to 500 ns. At the same time, high photoluminescence quantum yields are maintained for a strongly tilted emitter in a host matrix. Proof-of-concept organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on these new emitter designs were fabricated, with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 19.1% with low device roll-off efficiency. Transient electroluminescence studies indicate that molecular design concepts for new CMA emitters can be successfully translated into the OLED device.

Synthesis, structures, and photophysical properties of two Cu(I) complexes supported by N-heterocyclic carbene and phosphine ligands

Two new cationic four-coordinate Cu(I) complexes supported by different chelating N-heterocyclic carbene ligands and the diphosphine ligand bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether (POP) have been synthesized. The chemical structures of both complexes have been characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 31P NMR, and mass spectroscopy, and the crystal structure of one complex has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Results of theoretical calculations indicate that the lowest energy electronic transitions of these complexes are mainly the metal-to-ligand charge transfer and ligand-to-ligand charge transfer transitions. The complexes in solid state show intense emissions with high photoluminescence quantum yields. The photophysical behavior at 298 and 77K shows that emissions of these complexes at room temperature are thermally activated delayed fluorescence mixed with phosphorescence.

A Red-Emitting Cu(I)–Halide Cluster Phosphor with Near-Unity Photoluminescence Efficiency for High-Power wLED Applications

Solid-state lighting technology, where light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are used for energy conversion from electricity to light, is considered a next-generation lighting technology. One of the significant challenges in the field is the synthesis of high-efficiency phosphors for designing phosphor-converted white LEDs under high flux operating currents. Here, we reported the synthesis, structure, and photophysical properties of a tetranuclear Cu(I)–halide cluster phosphor, [bppmCu₂I₂]₂ (bppm = bisdiphenylphosphinemethane), for the fabrication of high-performance white LEDs. The PL investigations demonstrated that the red emission exhibits a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield at room temperature and unusual spectral broadening with increasing temperature in the crystalline state. Considering the excellent photophysical properties, the crystalline sample of [bppmCu₂I₂]₂ was successfully applied for the fabrication of phosphor-converted white LEDs. The prototype white LED device exhibited a continuous rise in brightness in the range of a high bias current (100–1000 mA) with CRI as high as 84 and CCT of 5828 K, implying great potential for high-quality white LEDs.

Manganese(I) Complex with Monodentate Arylisocyanide Ligands Shows Photodissociation Instead of Luminescence

Recently reported manganese(I) complexes with chelating arylisocyanide ligands exhibit luminescent metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excited states, similar to ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes with the same d6 valence electron configuration used for many different applications in photophysics and photochemistry. However, chelating arylisocyanide ligands require substantial synthetic effort, and therefore it seemed attractive to explore the possibility of using more readily accessible monodentate arylisocyanides instead. Here, we synthesized the new Mn(I) complex [Mn(CNdippPhOMe2)6]PF6 with the known ligand CNdippPhOMe2 = 4-(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-2,6-diisopropylphenylisocyanide. This complex was investigated by NMR spectroscopy, single-crystal structure analysis, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) measurements, IR spectroscopy supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, cyclic voltammetry, and time-resolved as well as steady-state UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The key finding is that the new Mn(I) complex is nonluminescent and instead undergoes arylisocyanide ligand loss during continuous visible laser irradiation into ligand-centered and charge-transfer absorption bands, presumably owed to the population of dissociative d-d excited states. Thus, it seems that chelating bi- or tridentate binding motifs are essential for obtaining emissive MLCT excited states in manganese(I) arylisocyanides. Our work contributes to understanding the basic properties of photoactive first-row transition metal complexes and could help advance the search for alternatives to precious metal-based luminophores, photocatalysts, and sensors.

Novel Cu(I)-5-nitropyridine-2-thiol Cluster with NIR Emission: Structural and Photophysical Characterization

A novel Cu(I) cluster compound has been synthesized by reacting CuI with the 2,2'-dithiobis(5-nitropyridine) ligand under solvothermal conditions. During the reaction, the original ligand breaks into the 5-nitropyridine-2-thiolate moiety, which acts as the coordinating ligand with both N- and S-sites, leading to a distorted octahedral Cu₆S₆ cluster. The structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and FT-IR analysis, and the photophysical properties have been determined in the solid state by means of steady-state and time-resolved optical techniques. The cluster presents a near-infrared emission showing an unusual temperature dependence: when passing from 77 to 298 K, a blue-shift of the emission band is observed, associated with a decrease in its intensity. Time-dependent-density functional theory calculations suggest that the observed behavior can be ascribed to a complex interplay of excited states, basically in the triplet manifold.

Thiazoline Carbene-Cu(I)-Amide complexes: Efficient White Electroluminescence from Combined Monomer and Excimer Emission

Luminescent carbene-metal-amide complexes bearing group 11 metals (Cu, Ag, Au) have recently attracted great attention due to their exceptional emission efficiency and high radiative decay rates (k_r). These materials provide a less costly alternative to organic light-emitting diode (OLED) emitters based on more scarce metals, such as Ir and Pt. Herein, a series of eight Cu(I) complexes bearing as yet unexplored 1,3-thiazoline carbenes have been investigated and analyzed with respect to their light emission properties and OLED application. For the first time among the class of copper-based organometallic compounds the formation of efficient electroluminescent excimers is demonstrated. The prevalence of electroluminescence (EL) from either the monomer (bluish green) or the excimer (orange-red) can be adjusted in vacuum-deposited emissive layers by altering the extent of steric encumbrance of the emitter or its concentration. Optimized conditions in terms of the emitter structure and mass fraction allowed a simultaneous EL from the monomer and excimer, which laid the basis for a preparation of a single-emitter white OLED (WOLED) with external quantum efficiency of 16.5% and a maximum luminance of over 40000 cd m^-2. Wide overlapping emission bands of the monomer and excimer ensure a device color rendering index (CRI) of above 80. In such a way the prospects of copper complexes as cost-effective materials for lighting devices are demonstrated, offering expense reduction through a cheaper emissive component and a simplified device architecture.

Determining the Energy Gap between the S1 and T1 States of Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Molecular Systems Using Transient Fluorescence Spectroscopy

The energy gap (ΔE_S-T) between the lowest single and triple excited states is a crucial parameter for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecular systems with high quantum yield. However, a reliable experimental approach to precisely determine this value is challenging. Here, we introduce a new, simple, and efficient strategy to accurately obtain the ΔE_S-T in TADF systems from time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy using a recently reported TADF molecule, DMACPDO, as a representative. By introducing an explicit model to describe the corresponding singlet-triplet coupling system, elusive intersystem crossing and reverse intersystem crossing rates can be extracted by fitting the kinetics of the observed fluorescence. The ΔE_S-T value can then be determined. Moreover, our modeling accurately explained the opposite trend in fluorescence intensity of DMACPDO with solvent polarity under air-saturated and deoxygenated conditions. Additionally, the validity of this approach has been demonstrated in another well-known TADF molecule, 4CzIPN. We demonstrate how this approach of determining ΔE_S-T sheds light on a deeper understanding of energy-loss mechanisms involved in related photoconversion processes.
