Pd(I) Phosphine Carbonyl and Hydride Complexes Implicated in the Palladium-Catalyzed Oxo Process

Radicalizing CO by Mononuclear Palladium(I)

A mononuclear, T-shaped palladium(I) d9 metalloradical (3), stabilized by a bulky carbazole-based PNP-ligand, was obtained by reduction of palladium chloride or thermal Pd-C bond homolysis of the corresponding neopentyl complex. Pressurizing with CO gave the Pd(I) carbonyl complex, which was structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. Delocalization of the unpaired electron to the carbonyl carbon was detected by EPR spectroscopy and theoretically modeled by DFT and ab initio methods. The partially reduced and radicalized CO slowly reacts with di(tert-butyl) disulfide under homolytic S-S cleavage and C-S bond formation to give the corresponding metallathioester.

Visible light-induced oxidative N-dealkylation of alkylamines by a luminescent osmium(vi) nitrido complex

N-Dealkylation of amines by metal oxo intermediates (M Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> O) is related to drug detoxification and DNA repair in biological systems. In this study, we report the first example of N-dealkylation of various alkylamines by a luminescent osmium(vi) nitrido complex induced by visible light.

The visible light-induced N-dealkylation of various alkylamines by a luminescent osmium(vi) nitrido complex has been investigated. We provide definitive evidence that these reactions occur via an ET/PT mechanism.

Ferrocenylmethylphosphanes and the Alpha Process for Methoxycarbonylation: The Original Story

The Lucite Alpha process is the predominant technology for the preparation of acrylics. This two-stage process involves the palladium-catalysed formation of methyl propanoate from ethene, CO, and methanol, followed by the oxidative formylation of methyl propanoate into methyl methacrylate. A range of bis-1,2-disubstituted aminomethylferrocenes has been prepared and characterised. These complexes serve as precursors to a variety of bulky ferrocenylmethyldiphosphanes that, in turn, function as ligands in the palladium-catalysed process. We describe the crystal structures of five ligand precursors and provide a rationale for their design. In situ catalyst testing on palladium complexes derived from ferrocenylphosphanes demonstrates that these are highly selective (>99.5%) catalysts for the formation of methyl propanoate from ethene, CO, and methanol and have turnover numbers exceeding 50,000. This article credits those researchers who worked on this project in the early days, who received little or no credit for their achievements and endeavours.

Hydrogenolysis of Dinuclear PCNR Ligated PdII μ-Hydroxides and Their Mononuclear PdII Hydroxide Analogues

The hydrogenolysis of mono- and dinuclear Pd^II hydroxides was investigated both experimentally and computationally. It was found that the dinuclear μ-hydroxide complexes {[(PCN^R )Pd]₂ (μ-OH)}(OTf) (PCN^H =1-[3-[(di-tert-butylphosphino)methyl]phenyl]-1H-pyrazole; PCN^Me =1-[3-[(di-tert-butylphosphino)methyl]phenyl]-5-methyl-1H-pyrazole) react with H₂ to form the analogous dinuclear hydride species {[(PCN^R )Pd]₂ (μ-H)}(OTf). The dinuclear μ-hydride complexes were fully characterized, and are rare examples of structurally characterized unsupported singly bridged μ-H Pd^II dimers. The {[(PCN^Me )Pd]₂ (μ-OH)}(OTf) hydrogenolysis mechanism was investigated through experiments and computations. The hydrogenolysis of the mononuclear complex (PCN^H )Pd-OH resulted in a mixed ligand dinuclear species [(PCN^H )Pd](μ-H)[(PCC)Pd] (PCC=a dianionic version of PCN^H bound through phosphorus P, aryl C, and pyrazole C atoms) generated from initial ligand "rollover" C-H activation. Further exposure to H₂ yields the bisphosphine Pd⁰ complex Pd[(H)PCN^H ]₂ . When the ligand was protected at the pyrazole 5-position in the (PCN^Me )Pd-OH complex, no hydride formed under the same conditions; the reaction proceeded directly to the bisphosphine Pd⁰ complex Pd[(H)PCN^Me ]₂ . Reaction mechanisms for the hydrogenolysis of the monomeric and dimeric hydroxides are proposed.

Palladium-Catalyzed Hydroxycarbonylation of 1-Dodecene in Microemulsion Systems: Does Reaction Performance Care about Phase Behavior?

Catalysis, particularly metal-catalyzed reactions in microemulsion systems, offers a sustainable approach for organic reactions in water. However, it is still a challenging task because of the complex role of the nonionic surfactant in such a system and the interaction of the phase behavior and reaction performance. To get a profound knowledge of this role and interaction, a systematic study of the palladium-catalyzed hydroxycarbonylation of 1-dodecene in a microemulsion system is reported. The influence of the temperature, additives such as cosolvents, the catalyst concentration, and the hydrophilicity of the surfactant and its concentration has been investigated with regard to both the phase behavior and reaction performance. Interestingly, the investigations reveal that not the phase behavior of the microemulsion system but mainly the dimension of the oil-water interface and the local concentrations of the substrates at this interface, which is provided by the amount and hydrophilicity of the surfactant, control the reaction performance of hydroxycarbonylation in these systems. Moreover, it was found that the local concentration of the active catalyst complex at the interface is essential for the reaction performance. Dependent on the surface active properties of the catalyst complex, its bulk concentration, and the nature and amount of additives, the local concentration of the active catalyst complex at the interface is strongly influenced, which has a huge impact on the reaction performance.

Dinuclear Pd(I) complexes with bridging allyl and related ligands

There are many important synthetic methods that utilize palladium catalysts. In most of these reactions, the palladium species are proposed to exist exclusively in either the Pd(0) or Pd(II) oxidation states. However, in the last decade, dinuclear Pd(I) complexes have repeatedly been isolated from reaction mixtures previously suggested to involve only species in the Pd(0) and Pd(II) oxidation states. As a consequence, in order to design improved catalysts there is considerable interest in understanding the chemistry of dinuclear Pd(I) complexes. A significant proportion of the known dinuclear Pd(I) complexes are supported by bridging allyl or related ligands such as cyclopentadienyl or indenyl ligands. This review provides a detailed account of the synthesis, electronic structure and stoichiometric reactivity of dinuclear Pd(I) complexes with bridging allyl and related ligands. Additionally, it describes recent work where dinuclear Pd(I) complexes with bridging allyl ligands have been detected in catalytic reactions, such as cross-coupling, and discusses the potential implications for catalysis.

The free-energy barrier to hydride transfer across a dipalladium complex

We use density-functional theory molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) simulations to determine the hydride transfer coordinate between palladium centres of the crystallographically observed terminal hydride locations, Pd–Pd–H, originally postulated for the solution dynamics of the complex bis-NHC dipalladium hydride [{(MesIm)₂CH₂}₂Pd₂H][PF₆], and then calculate the free-energy along this coordinate. We estimate the transfer barrier-height to be about 20 kcal mol⁻¹ with a hydride transfer rate in the order of seconds at room temperature. We validate our DFT-MD modelling using inelastic neutron scattering which reveals anharmonicity of the hydride environment that is so pronounced that there is complete failure of the harmonic model for the hydride ligand. The simulations are extended to high temperature to bring the H-transfer to a rate that is accessible to the simulation technique.

Insight into the efficiency of cinnamyl-supported precatalysts for the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction: observation of Pd(I) dimers with bridging allyl ligands during catalysis

Despite widespread use of complexes of the type Pd(L)(η(3)-allyl)Cl as precatalysts for cross-coupling, the chemistry of related Pd(I) dimers of the form (μ-allyl)(μ-Cl)Pd2(L)2 has been underexplored. Here, the relationship between the monomeric and the dimeric compounds is investigated using both experiment and theory. We report an efficient synthesis of the Pd(I) dimers (μ-allyl)(μ-Cl)Pd2(IPr)2 (allyl = allyl, crotyl, cinnamyl; IPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) through activation of Pd(IPr)(η(3)-allyl)Cl type monomers under mildly basic reaction conditions. The catalytic performance of the Pd(II) monomers and their Pd(I) μ-allyl dimer congeners for the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction is compared. We propose that the (μ-allyl)(μ-Cl)Pd2(IPr)2-type dimers are activated for catalysis through disproportionation to Pd(IPr)(η(3)-allyl)Cl and monoligated IPr-Pd(0). The microscopic reverse comproportionation reaction of monomers of the type Pd(IPr)(η(3)-allyl)Cl with IPr-Pd(0) to form Pd(I) dimers is also studied. It is demonstrated that this is a facile process, and Pd(I) dimers are directly observed during catalysis in reactions using Pd(II) precatalysts. In these catalytic reactions, Pd(I) μ-allyl dimer formation is a deleterious process which removes the IPr-Pd(0) active species from the reaction mixture. However, increased sterics at the 1-position of the allyl ligand in the Pd(IPr)(η(3)-crotyl)Cl and Pd(IPr)(η(3)-cinnamyl)Cl precatalysts results in a larger kinetic barrier to comproportionation, which allows more of the active IPr-Pd(0) catalyst to enter the catalytic cycle when these substituted precatalysts are used. Furthermore, we have developed reaction conditions for the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction using Pd(IPr)(η(3)-cinnamyl)Cl which are compatible with mild bases.

A unique palladium catalyst for efficient and selective alkoxycarbonylation of olefins with formates

Forget about CO! Carbonylations are among the most important homogeneously catalyzed reactions in the chemical industry, but typically require carbon monoxide. Instead, straightforward and efficient alkoxycarbonylations of olefins can proceed with alkyl formates in the presence of a specific palladium catalyst. Aromatic, terminal aliphatic, and internal olefins are carbonylated to give industrially important linear esters at low catalyst loadings.

Pyrrole-based new diphosphines: Pd and Ni complexes bearing the PNP pincer ligand

A new class of diphosphine PNP pincer ligand, 2,5-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyrrole 2, was synthesized by the reaction between Ph2PH and 2,5-bis(dimethylaminomethyl)pyrrole in 90% yield. The analogous reaction of Ph2PH with 1,9-bis(dimethylaminomethyl)diphenyldipyrrolylmethane readily afforded a PNNP type diphosphine ligand, 1,9-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)diphenyldipyrrolylmethane 5 in 92% yield. These phosphine compounds were oxidized with H2O2 and S8 to give the corresponding phosphoryl and thiophosphoryl compounds 6-9 in very good yields. The reaction of the PNP pincer ligand 2 with [PdCl2(PhCN)2] in the presence of Et3N afforded the mononuclear Pd(II) complex, [PdCl{C4H2N-2,5-(CH2PPh2)2-κ(3)PNP}] 10 in 87% yield. Conversely, treatment of 2 with [PdCl2(PhCN)2] in the absence of Et3N gave the dinuclear Pd(II) complex [Pd2Cl4{μ-C4H3N-2,5-(CH2PPh2)2-κ(2)PP}2], the structure which is proposed based on the spectroscopic data. When 2 was treated with Pd(0) precursor [Pd2(dba)3]·CHCl3 the dinuclear Pd(I) complex [Pd2{μ-C4H2N-2,5-(CH2PPh2)2-κ(2)PN,κ(1)P}2], 12, was obtained in 23% yield. The formation of complex 12 is solvent dependent, which transforms into complex 10 in CDCl3 as studied by variable temperature (1)H and (31)P NMR methods. Treatment of 2 with [Ni(OAc)2]·4H2O gave the mononuclear Ni(II) pincer complex [Ni(OAc){C4H2N-2,5-(CH2PPh2)2-κ(3)PNP}], 13, which upon treatment with an excess of LiCl or LiBr or KI afforded the respective halide ion substituted Ni(II) complexes, [NiX{C4H2N-2,5-(CH2PPh2)2-κ(3)PNP}] (X = Cl, Br, and I), 14-16, in very good yields. The structures of 5, 2,5-bis(diphenylphosphorylmethyl)pyrrole 6, 10, 12, and 14-16 were determined by the single crystal X-ray diffraction method. In the structure of 12, two short contacts between the diagonally positioned Pd and P atoms are observed. To understand these weak interactions, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were done and an interaction MO diagram is presented.
