Reactivity of Mo(PMe3)6 towards benzothiophene and selenophenes: new pathways relevant to hydrodesulfurization

Chromium-Thiolate Complex Undergoing C-S Bond Cleavage

The cleavage of C-S bonds represents a crucial step in fossil fuel refinement to remove organosulfur impurities. Efforts are required to identify alternatives that can replace the energy-intensive hydrodesulfurization process currently in use. In this context, we have developed a series of bis-thiolato-ligated CrIII complexes supported by the L2- ligand (L2- = 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-diyl(bis(1,1-diphenylethanethiolate), one of them displaying desulfurization of one thiolate of the ligand under reducing and acidic conditions at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. While only 5-coordinated complexes were previously isolated by reaction of L2- with 3d metal MIII ions, both 5- and 6-coordinated mononuclear complexes have been obtained in the case of CrIII, viz., [CrIIILCl], [CrIIILCl2]-, and [CrIIILCl(CH3CN)]. The investigation of the reactivity of [CrIIILCl(CH3CN)] under reducing conditions led to a dinuclear [CrIII2L2(μ-Cl)(μ-OH)] compound and, in the presence of protons, to the mononuclear CrIII complex [CrIII(LN2S)2]+, where LN2S- is the partially desulfurized form of L2-. A desulfurization mechanism has been proposed involving the release of H2S, as evidenced experimentally.

Catalytic hydrogenation of olefins by a multifunctional molybdenum-sulfur complex

Exploration of molybdenum complexes as homogeneous hydrogenation catalysts has garnered significant attention, but hydrogenation of unactivated olefins under mild conditions are scarce. Here, we report the synthesis of a molybdenum complex, [Cp*Mo(Ph2PC6H4S-CH = CH2)(Py)]+ (2), which exhibits intriguing reactivity toward C2H2 and H2 under ambient pressure. This vinylthioether complex showcases efficient catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of various aromatic and aliphatic alkenes, demonstrating a broad substrate scope without the need for any additives. The catalytic pathway involves an uncommon oxidative addition of H2 to the cationic Mo(II) center, resulting in a Mo(IV) dihydride intermediate. Moreover, complex 2 also shows catalytic activity toward C2H2, leading to the production of polyacetylene and the extension of the vinylthioether ligand into a pendant triene chain.

Synthesis and characterization of bi(metallacycloprop-1-ene) complexes

In all previously reported metallacycloprop-1-ene or η²-vinyl complexes, the metal center bears only one vinyl moiety. We have now successfully synthesized and structurally characterized the first complexes bearing two η²-vinyl moieties or spiro bi(metallacycloprop-1-ene) complexes from reactions of alkynes with rhenium phosphine complexes. Computational studies indicate that the metallacycloprop-1-ene rings are aromatic and the complexes represent a rare σ-type spirometalla-aromatic system.

Catalytic Hydrolysis of Thiolates to Alcohols

A new and efficient catalytic hydrolysis of aliphatic and aromatic thiolates under ambient conditions is presented. Previously, we have demonstrated (Ganguly et al., Inorg. Chem. 2018, 57, 11306-11309) the Co(II) mediated stoichiometric hydrolysis of thiols to produce alcohols/phenols along with a binuclear dicobalt(II)-hydrosulfide complex, [Co₂(PhBIMP)(μ₂-SH)(DMF)]²⁺ (1) (PhBIMP is the anion of 2,6 bis[(bis((N-1-methyl-4,5- diphenylimidazoylmethyl) amino)methyl]- 4-methylphenol). In the present work, we have shown that the product of the stoichiometric reaction, 1, may act as an efficient catalyst for the catalytic hydrolysis of a broad range of aliphatic and aromatic thiolates in DMF at room temperature to produce alcohols/phenols. Complex 1 takes up a thiolate (RS^-) and a water molecule to generate an active intermediate complex, [Co₂(PhBIMP)(μ₂-SH)(RS)(H₂O)]¹⁺ (2), which, in turn, releases the alcohol/phenol (ROH), hydrosulfide (HS^-), and regenerates 1.

Recent Advances in the Synthesis of Selenophenes and Their Derivatives

The selenophene derivatives are an important class of selenium-based heterocyclics. These compounds play an important role in prospecting new drugs, as well as in the development of new light-emitting materials. During the last years, several methods have been emerging to access the selenophene scaffold, employing a diversity of cyclization-based synthetic strategies, involving specific reaction partners and particularities. This review presents a comprehensive discussion on the recent advances in the synthesis of selenophene-based compounds, starting from different precursors, highlighting the main differences, the advantages, and limitations among them.

Reversible oxidative-addition and reductive-elimination of thiophene from a titanium complex and its thermally-induced hydrodesulphurization chemistry

The masked Ti(ii) synthon (Ketguan)(η6-ImDippN)Ti (1) oxidatively adds across thiophene to give ring-opened (Ketguan)(ImDippN)Ti[κ2-S(CH)3CH] (2). Complex 2 is photosensitive, and upon exposure to light, reductively eliminates thiophene to regenerate 1 - a rare example of early-metal mediated oxidative-addition/reductive-elimination chemistry. DFT calculations indicate strong titanium π-backdonation to the thiophene π*-orbitals leads to the observed thiophene ring opening across titanium, while a proposed photoinduced LMCT promotes the reverse thiophene elimination from 2. Finally, pressurizing solutions of 2 with H2 (150 psi) at 80 °C leads to the hydrodesulphurization of thiophene to give the Ti(iv) sulphide (Ketguan)(ImDippN)Ti(S) (3) and butane.

Metallacyclopentadienes: synthesis, structure and reactivity

Metallacyclopentadienes, which possess two M-C(sp²) bonds and feature the structure of M(C[upper bond 1 start]R¹[double bond, length as m-dash]CR²-CR³[double bond, length as m-dash]C[upper bond 1 end]R⁴), are an important class of five-membered metallacycles. They are considered as both reactive intermediates in the stoichiometric and catalytic transformations of organic molecules and useful precursors to main group element compounds, and have received considerable attention in organometallic chemistry, coordination chemistry and synthetic organic chemistry over the past six decades because of their unique metallacyclic structure. This review comprehensively presents the synthesis, structure and reactivity of the s-, p-, d- and f-block metallacyclopentadienes distributed in the whole periodic table. In addition, their application in synthetic organic chemistry and polymer chemistry is summarized. This review aims to be beneficial for the design and synthesis of novel metallacyclopentadienes, and for promoting the rapid development of metallacyclic chemistry.

Influence of the 5f Orbitals on the Bonding and Reactivity in Organoactinides: Experimental and Computational Studies on a Uranium Metallacyclopropene

The synthesis, structure, and reactivity of a uranium metallacyclopropene were comprehensively studied. Reduction of (η(5)-C5Me5)2UCl2 (1) with potassium graphite (KC8) in the presence of bis(trimethylsilyl)acetylene (Me3SiC≡CSiMe3) allows the first stable uranium metallacyclopropene (η(5)-C5Me5)2U[η(2)-C2(SiMe3)2] (2) to be isolated. Magnetic susceptibility data confirm that 2 is a U(IV) complex, and density functional theory (DFT) studies indicate substantial 5f orbital contributions to the bonding of the metallacyclopropene U-(η(2)-C═C) moiety, leading to more covalent bonds between the (η(5)-C5Me5)2U(2+) and [η(2)-C2(SiMe3)2](2-) fragments than those in the related Th(IV) compound. Consequently, very different reactivity patterns emerge, e.g., 2 can act as a source for the (η(5)-C5Me5)2U(II) fragment when reacted with alkynes and a variety of heterounsaturated molecules such as imines, bipy, carbodiimide, organic azides, hydrazine, and azo derivatives.

Molybdenum 17- and 18-electron bis- and tris(butadiene) complexes: electronic structures, spectroscopic properties, and oxidative ligand substitution reactions

New results on the electronic structures, spectroscopic properties, and reactivities of the molybdenum tris(butadiene) and tris(2,3-dimethylbutadiene) complexes [Mo(bd)3] (1(bd)) and [Mo(dmbd)3] (1(dmbd)), respectively, are reported. Importantly, the metal ligand bonding interaction can be weakened by oxidizing the metal center with ferrocenium salts. The addition of the bidentate phosphine ligand 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane then leads to a new type of stable 17-electron complex, [Mo(dmbd)2(dppe)](X) (2; X = BF4(-), PF6(-), BPh4(-)), where one of the butadiene ligands is exchanged by a chelating phosphine. Reduction of the cationic complexes 2 generates the corresponding 18-electron complex [Mo(dmbd)2(dppe)] (3), thus establishing a new strategy for ligand substitution reactions in [Mo(bd)3] complexes via one-electron oxidized intermediates. The new heteroleptic molybdenum complexes are characterized by X-ray structure analysis; vibrational, NMR, and EPR spectroscopy; and electrochemistry. DFT calculations are performed to explain the structural and specroscopic trends observed experimentally. For compound 1(bd), a normal coordinate analysis is presented, providing additional information on the bonding situation in this type of complex.

Crystal structure of 3-chlorobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carbonyl chloride

3-Chlorobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carbonyl chloride was synthesised from cinnamic acid and thionyl chloride. The single crystal X-ray structure determination confirmed the earlier proposed structure and the product was further characterised by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectrometry. The X-ray structure determination revealed two sets of symmetry related molecules along the b-axis that are loosely connected by relatively weak CH…π ( 3.626, 3.628 Å) interactions, giving rise to two infinite chains. The packing structure is dominated by Van der Waals forces between these chains. No significant π–π interactions are found in the crystal structure.
