Self-Assembly of Dendritic Crowns into Chiral Supramolecular Spheres

Cogwheel Mechanism of Helical Self-Organization is Thermodynamically Controlled, Self-Repairing, and Universal

The cogwheel mechanism of helical self-organization, reported by us, generates columns with the alkyl chains of their components parallel to the column axis. This mechanism disregards the enantiomeric purity of constituents and, under suitable design, provides the fastest rate of helical self-organization. Here, we investigate the supramolecular structure of a thermodynamically controlled helical self-organization system. Unexpectedly, we found that this system follows a cogwheel mechanism of helical self-organization that does not contain the two key parameters of the cogwheel mechanism: the length of the alkyl group of the self-assembling dendron identical to the helical half-pitch (hhp) of the column and the presence of chiral branches pointing toward the column center. Unpredictably, we uncovered that the presence of chiral branching points and strict alkyl chain lengths is not a requirement of the cogwheel mechanism. A self-repairing process provides access to a constant hhp via a shorter and longer alkyl chain length than the originally exact demanded value, which together with the lack of branching point(s) demonstrates the universality of the cogwheel mechanism of helical self-organization. Applications derived from this concept are envisioned.

From Frank-Kasper, Quasicrystals, and Biological Membrane Mimics to Reprogramming In Vivo the Living Factory to Target the Delivery of mRNA with One-Component Amphiphilic Janus Dendrimers

This Perspective is dedicated to the 25th Anniversary of Biomacromolecules. It provides a personal view on the developing field of the polymer and biology interface over the 25 years since the journal was launched by the American Chemical Society (ACS). This Perspective is meant to bridge an article published in the first issue of the journal and recent bioinspired developments in the laboratory of the corresponding author. The discovery of supramolecular spherical helices self-organizing into Frank-Kasper and quasicrystals as models of icosahedral viruses, as well as of columnar helical assemblies that mimic rodlike viruses by supramolecular dendrimers, is briefly presented. The transplant of these assemblies from supramolecular dendrimers to block copolymers, giant surfactants, and other self-organized soft matter follows. Amphiphilic self-assembling Janus dendrimers and glycodendrimers as mimics of biological membranes and their glycans are discussed. New concepts derived from them that evolved in the in vivo targeted delivery of mRNA with the simplest one-component synthetic vector systems are introduced. Some synthetic methodologies employed during the synthesis and self-assembly are explained. Unraveling bioinspired applications of novel materials concludes this brief 25th Anniversary Perspective of Biomacromolecules.

Stimuli-Responsive Principles of Supramolecular Organizations Emerging from Self-Assembling and Self-Organizable Dendrons, Dendrimers, and Dendronized Polymers

All activities of our daily life, of the nature surrounding us and of the entire society and its complex economic and political systems are affected by stimuli. Therefore, understanding stimuli-responsive principles in nature, biology, society, and in complex synthetic systems is fundamental to natural and life sciences. This invited Perspective attempts to organize, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time the stimuli-responsive principles of supramolecular organizations emerging from self-assembling and self-organizable dendrons, dendrimers, and dendronized polymers. Definitions of stimulus and stimuli from different fields of science are first discussed. Subsequently, we decided that supramolecular organizations of self-assembling and self-organizable dendrons, dendrimers, and dendronized polymers may fit best in the definition of stimuli from biology. After a brief historical introduction to the discovery and development of conventional and self-assembling and self-organizable dendrons, dendrimers, and dendronized polymers, a classification of stimuli-responsible principles as internal- and external-stimuli was made. Due to the enormous amount of literature on conventional dendrons, dendrimers, and dendronized polymers as well as on their self-assembling and self-organizable systems we decided to discuss stimuli-responsive principles only with examples from our laboratory. We apologize to all contributors to dendrimers and to the readers of this Perspective for this space-limited decision. Even after this decision, restrictions to a limited number of examples were required. In spite of this, we expect that this Perspective will provide a new way of thinking about stimuli in all fields of self-organized complex soft matter.

Chiral three-dimensional supramolecular assemblies: colloidal onions, cubosomes, and hexosomes

Amphiphilic molecules can self-assemble in solution into a variety of supramolecular assemblies, ranging from simple micelles, ribbons, and tubes to complex cubosomes with bicontinuous cubic nanostructures. It is well known that the self-assembly of chiral building blocks into one-dimensional (1D) twisted fibers, helical ribbons, and tubes enables chiral transfer from the molecular scale to super-assemblies. In this study, we investigate the chirality of three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular assemblies, such as colloidal onions, cubosomes, and hexosomes, formed from the same chiral heteroclusters. Unlike supramolecular 1D helical ribbons, these assemblies do not have chiral external shapes or chiral internal nanostructures, but they do exhibit circular dichroism, suggesting that they are chiral. Structural studies revealed that the ordered arrangement of the chiral units in curved superstructures is the origin of the supramolecular chirality of these 3D assemblies. Therefore, this study provides insights for enriching the diversity and complexity of supramolecular chiral assemblies.

Side Group of Hydrophobic Amino Acids Controls Chiral Discrimination among Chiral Counterions and Metal-Organic Cages

The self-assembly of chiral Pd₁₂L₂₄ metal-organic cages (MOCs) based on hydrophobic amino acids, including alanine (Ala), valine (Val), and leucine (Leu), into single-layered hollow spherical blackberry-type structures is triggered by nitrates through counterion-mediated attraction. In addition to nitrates, anionic N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl) (Boc)-protected Ala, Val, and Leu were used as chiral counterions during the self-assembly of d-MOCs. Previously, we showed that l-Ala suppresses the self-assembly process of d-Pd₁₂Ala₂₄ but has no effect on l-Pd₁₂Ala₂₄, i.e., chiral discrimination. Here, we indicate when the amino acid used as the chiral counterion has a bulkier side group than the amino acid in the MOC structure, no chiral discrimination exists; otherwise, chiral discrimination exists. For example, Ala can induce chiral discrimination in all chiral MOCs, whereas Leu can induce chiral discrimination only in Pd₁₂Leu₂₄. Moreover, chiral anionic d- and l-alanine-based surfactants have no chiral discrimination, indicating that bulkier chiral counterions with more hydropohobic side groups can erase chiral discrimination.

Functional Chirality: From Small Molecules to Supramolecular Assemblies

Many structures in nature look symmetric, but this is not completely accurate, because absolute symmetry is close to death. Chirality (handedness) is one form of living asymmetry. Chirality has been extensively investigated at different levels. Many rules were coined in attempts made for many decades to have control over the selection of handedness that seems to easily occur in nature. It is certain that if good control is realized on chirality, the roads will be ultimately open towards numerous developments in pharmaceutical, technological, and industrial applications. This tutorial review presents a report on chirality from single molecules to supramolecular assemblies. The realized functions are still in their infancy and have been scarcely converted into actual applications. This review provides an overview for starters in the chirality field of research on concepts, common methodologies, and outstanding accomplishments. It starts with an introductory section on the definitions and classifications of chirality at the different levels of molecular complexity, followed by highlighting the importance of chirality in biological systems and the different means of realizing chirality and its inversion in solid and solution-based systems at molecular and supramolecular levels. Chirality-relevant important findings and (bio-)technological applications are also reported accordingly.

Superlattice Engineering with Chemically Precise Molecular Building Blocks

Correlating nanoscale building blocks with mesoscale superlattices, mimicking metal alloys, a rational engineering strategy becomes critical to generate designed periodicity with emergent properties. For molecule-based superlattices, nevertheless, nonrigid molecular features and multistep self-assembly make the molecule-to-superlattice correlation less straightforward. In addition, single component systems possess intrinsically limited volume asymmetry of self-assembled spherical motifs (also known as "mesoatoms"), further hampering novel superlattices' emergence. In the current work, we demonstrate that properly designed molecular systems could generate a spectrum of unconventional superlattices. Four categories of giant molecules are presented. We systematically explore the lattice-forming principles in unary and binary systems, unveiling how molecular stoichiometry, topology, and size differences impact the mesoatoms and further toward their superlattices. The presence of novel superlattices helps to correlate with Frank-Kasper phases previously discovered in soft matter. We envision the present work offers new insights about how complex superlattices could be rationally fabricated by scalable-preparation and easy-to-process materials.

Synthesis and Coordination Properties of a Water-Soluble Material by Cross-Linking Low Molecular Weight Polyethyleneimine with Armed Cyclotriveratrilene

In this study, a full organic and water-soluble material was synthesized by coupling low molecular weight polyethylenimine (PEI-800) with cyclotriveratrilene (CTV). The water-soluble cross-linked polymer contains hydrophobic holes with a high coordination capability towards different organic drug molecules. The coordinating capability towards hydrophilic drugs (doxorubicin, gatifloxacin and sinomenine) and hydrophobic drugs (camptothecin and celastrol) was analyzed in an aqueous medium by using NMR, UV-Vis and emission spectroscopies. The coordination of drug molecules with the armed CTV unit through hydrophobic interactions was observed. In particular, celastrol exhibited more ionic interactions with the PEI moiety of the hosting system. In the case of doxorubicin, the host-guest detachment was induced by the addition of ammonium chloride, suggesting that the intracellular environment can facilitate the release of the drug molecules.

An Accelerated Modular-Orthogonal Ni-Catalyzed Methodology to Symmetric and Nonsymmetric Constitutional Isomeric AB2 to AB9 Dendrons Exhibiting Unprecedented Self-Organizing Principles

Five libraries of natural and synthetic phenolic acids containing five AB₃, ten constitutional isomeric AB₂, one AB₄, and one AB₅ were previously synthesized and reported by our laboratory in 5 to 11 steps. They were employed to construct seven libraries of self-assembling dendrons, by divergent generational, deconstruction, and combined approaches, enabling the discovery of a diversity of supramolecular assemblies including Frank-Kasper phases, soft quasicrystals, and complex helical organizations, some undergoing deracemization in the crystal state. However, higher substitution patterns within a single dendron were not accessible. Here we report three libraries consisting of 30 symmetric and nonsymmetric constitutional isomeric phenolic acids with unprecedented sequenced patterns, including two AB₂, three AB₃, eight AB₄, five AB₅, six AB₆, three AB₇, two AB₈, and one AB₉ synthesized by accelerated modular-orthogonal Ni-catalyzed borylation and cross-coupling. A single etherification step with 4-(n-dodecyloxy)benzyl chloride transformed all these phenolic acids, of interest also for other applications, into self-assembling dendrons. Despite this synthetic simplicity, they led to a diversity of unprecedented self-organizing principles: lamellar structures of interest for biological membrane mimics, helical columnar assemblies from rigid-solid angle dendrons forming Tobacco Mosaic Virus-like assemblies, columnar organizations from adaptable-solid angle dendrons forming disordered micellar-like nonhelical columns, columns from supramolecular spheres, five body-centered cubic phases displaying supramolecular orientational memory, rarely encountered in previous libraries forming predominantly Frank-Kasper phases, and two Frank-Kasper phases. Lessons from these self-organizing principles, discovered within a single generation of self-assembling dendrons, may help elaborate design principles for complex helical and nonhelical organizations of synthetic and biological matter.

Mesoscale Frank-Kasper Crystal Structures from Dendron Assembly by Controlling Core Apex Interactions

Single-component polymeric materials open up a great potential for self-assembly into mesoscale complex crystal structures that are known as Frank-Kasper (FK) phases. Predicting the packing structures of the soft-matter spheres, however, remains a challenge even when the molecular design is precisely known. Here, we investigate the role of the molecules' enthalpic interaction in determining the low-symmetry crystal structures. To this end, we synthesize architecturally asymmetric dendrons by varying their apex functionalities and examine the packing structures of the second-generation (G2) dendritic wedges. Our work shows that weakening the hydrogen bonding of the dendron apex makes the particles softer and smaller, and leads to the formation of various FK structures at lower temperatures, including the new observation of a FK C14 phase in the cone-shaped dendron systems. As a consequence of the free energy balance between the particle's interfacial tension and the chain's stretching, various packing structures are mainly tuned by designing the hydrogen bonding interaction.

Two-Dimensional Frank-Kasper Z Phase with One Unit-Cell Thickness

Z phase is one of the three basic units by which the Frank-Kasper (F-K) phases are generally assembled. Compared to the other two basic units, that is, A₁₅ and C₁₅ structures, the Z structure is rarely experimentally observed because of a relatively large volume ratio among the constituents to inhibit its formation. Moreover, the discovered Z structures are generally the three-dimensional ordered Gibbs bulk phases to conform to their thermodynamic stability. Here, we confirmed the existence of a metastable two-dimensional F-K Z phase that has only one unit-cell height in the crystallography in a model Mg-Sm-Zn system, using atomic-scale scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with the first-principles calculations. Self-adapted atomic shuffling can convert the simple hexagonal close-packed structure to the topologically close-packed F-K Z phase. This finding provides new insight into understanding the formation mechanism and clustering behavior of the F-K phases and even quasicrystals in general condensed matters.

Functionalization of Polyethyleneimine with Hollow Cyclotriveratrylene and Its Subsequent Supramolecular Interaction with Doxorubicin

In this paper, a modified Cyclotriveratrylene was synthesized and linked to a branched Polyethylenimine, and this unique polymeric material was subsequently examined as a potential supramolecular carrier for Doxorubicin. Spectroscopic analysis in different solvents had shown that Doxorubicin was coordinated within the hollow-shaped unit of the armed Cyclotriveratrylene, and the nature of the host-guest complex revealed intrinsic Van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonding between the host and guest. The strongest interaction was detected in water because of the hydrophobic effect shared between the aromatic groups of the Doxorubicin and Cyclotriveratrylene unit. Density functional theory calculations had also confirmed that in the most stable coordination of Doxorubicin with the cross-linked polymer, the aromatic rings of the Doxorubicin were localized toward the Cyclotriveratrylene core, while its aliphatic chains aligned closer with amino groups, thus forming a compact supramolecular assembly that may confer a shielding effect on Doxorubicin. These observations had emphasized the importance of supramolecular considerations when designing a novel drug delivery platform.

Spherical Supramolecular Structures Constructed via Chemically Symmetric Perylene Bisimides: Beyond Columnar Assembly

Like other discotic molecules, self-assembled supramolecular structures of perylene bisimides (PBIs) are commonly limited to columnar or lamellar structures due to their distinct π-conjugated scaffolds and unique rectangular shape of perylene cores. The discovery of PBIs with supramolecular structures beyond layers and columns may expand the scope of PBI-based materials. A series of unconventional spherical packing phases in PBIs, including A15 phase, σ phase, dodecagonal quasicrystalline (DQC) phase, and body-centered cubic (BCC) phase, is reported. A strategy involving functionalization of perylene core with several polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) cages achieved spherical assemblies of PBIs, instead of columnar assemblies, due to the significantly increased steric hindrance at the periphery. This strategy may also be employed for the discovery of unconventional spherical assemblies in other related discotic molecules by the introduction of similar bulky functional groups at their periphery. An unusual inverse phase transition sequence from a BCC phase to a σ phase was observed by increasing annealing temperature.

Sequence-Defined Dendrons Dictate Supramolecular Cogwheel Assembly of Dendronized Perylene Bisimides

A dendronized perylene bisimide (PBI) that self-organizes into hexagonal arrays of supramolecular double helices with identical single-crystal-like order that disregards chirality was recently reported. A cogwheel model of self-assembly that explains this process was proposed. Accessing the highly ordered cogwheel phase required very slow heating and cooling or extended periods of annealing. Analogous PBIs with linear alkyl chains did not exhibit the cogwheel assembly. Here a library of sequence-defined dendrons containing all possible compositions of linear and racemic alkyl chains was employed to construct self-assembling PBIs. Thermal and structural analysis of their assemblies by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and fiber X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that the incorporation of n-alkyl chains accelerates the formation of the high order cogwheel phase, rendering the previously invisible phase accessible under standard heating and cooling rates. Small changes to the primary structure, as constitutional isomerism, result in significant changes to macroscopic properties such as melting of the periodic array. This study demonstrated how changes to the sequence-defined primary structure, including the relocation of methyl groups between two constitutional isomers, dictate tertiary and quaternary structure in hierarchical assemblies. This led to the discovery of a sequence that self-organizes the cogwheel assembly much faster than even the corresponding homochiral compounds and demonstrated that defined-sequence, which has long been recognized as a determinant for the complex structure of biomacromolecules including proteins and nucleic acids, plays the same role also in supramolecular synthetic systems.

Identification of a Frank-Kasper Z phase from shape amphiphile self-assembly

Frank-Kasper phases, a family of ordered structures formed from particles with spherical motifs, are found in a host of materials, such as metal alloys, inorganic colloids and various types of soft matter. All the experimentally observed Frank-Kasper phases can be constructed from the basic units of three fundamental structures called the A15, C15 and Z phases. The Z phase, typically observed in metal alloys, is associated with a relatively large volume ratio between its constituents, and this constraint inhibits its formation in most self-assembled single-component soft-matter systems. We have assembled a series of nanosized shape amphiphiles that comprise a triphenylene core and six polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane cages grafted onto it through linkers to give a variety of unconventional structures, which include the Z phase. This structure was obtained through fine tuning of the linker lengths between the core and the peripheral polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane cages, and exhibits a relatively large volume asymmetry between its constituent polyhedral particle motifs.

Screening Libraries of Amphiphilic Janus Dendrimers Based on Natural Phenolic Acids to Discover Monodisperse Unilamellar Dendrimersomes

Natural, including plant, and synthetic phenolic acids are employed as building blocks for the synthesis of constitutional isomeric libraries of self-assembling dendrons and dendrimers that are the simplest examples of programmed synthetic macromolecules. Amphiphilic Janus dendrimers are synthesized from a diversity of building blocks including natural phenolic acids. They self-assemble in water or buffer into vesicular dendrimersomes employed as biological membrane mimics, hybrid and synthetic cells. These dendrimersomes are predominantly uni- or multilamellar vesicles with size and polydispersity that is predicted by their primary structure. However, in numerous cases, unilamellar dendrimersomes completely free of multilamellar assemblies are desirable. Here, we report the synthesis and structural analysis of a library containing 13 amphiphilic Janus dendrimers containing linear and branched alkyl chains on their hydrophobic part. They were prepared by an optimized iterative modular synthesis starting from natural phenolic acids. Monodisperse dendrimersomes were prepared by injection and giant polydisperse by hydration. Both were structurally characterized to select the molecular design principles that provide unilamellar dendrimersomes in higher yields and shorter reaction times than under previously used reaction conditions. These dendrimersomes are expected to provide important tools for synthetic cell biology, encapsulation, and delivery.

Peptide-Dendron Hybrids that Adopt Sequence-Encoded β-Sheet Conformations

Rational design rules for programming hierarchical organization and function through mutations of monomers in sequence-defined polymers can accelerate the development of novel polymeric and supramolecular materials. Our strategy for designing peptide-dendron hybrids that adopt predictable secondary and quaternary structures in bulk is based on patterning the sites at which dendrons are conjugated to short peptides. To validate this approach, we have designed and characterized a series of β-sheet-forming peptide-dendron hybrids. Spectroscopic studies of the hybrids in films reveal that the peptide portion of the hybrids adopts the intended secondary structure.

Organic core-shell-shaped micro/nanoparticles from twisted macrocycles in Schiff base reaction

A series of organic core–shell-shaped micro/nanoparticles from twisted enantiomeric macrocycles could be obtained in Schiff base reaction with high yield at room temperature.

Functional self-assemblies derived from noncovalent interactions such as lipid vesicles and DNA chiral double helices are a typical feature of natural life activity. Because of this phenomenon, a self-assembly approach for various functional organic particles is a desirable objective in supramolecular chemistry. Here, we report the discovery of enantiomeric conformers from a twisted macrocyclic host (MH), which was obtained from an achiral precursor by Schiff base reaction. Further studies suggest that a series of unexpected and stable core–shell-based organic micro/nanospheres can be directly precipitated from a simple reaction solution with high yield. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of MH revealed that the unusual C–H···π interaction triggered self-assembly of the enantiomeric forms in the solid state plays an important role in the formation of the core–shell-shaped organic particles.

Encapsulating propeller-like columnar liquid crystals with an aromatic outer shell: influence of phenoxy-terminated side chains on the phase behaviour of triphenylbenzenes

Tailoring of phase transition temperatures of columnar liquid crystals by side chain variation is often associated with an undesired change in the mesophase type and/or geometry. To overcome this problem phenoxy-terminated side chains rather than alkyl side chains were grafted onto triphenylbenzenes, which resulted in reduced clearing points, while melting points were little affected. More importantly, helical columnar self-assembly was not compromised.

Losing supramolecular orientational memory via self-organization of a misfolded secondary structure

Comparing the self-organization of two dendronized perylene bisimides reveals how structurally defective primary structure eliminates memory function via hierarchical self-organization.

The role of the secondary structure of helical poly(phenylacetylene)s in the formation of nanoparticles from polymer-metal complexes (HPMCs)

The great importance of the secondary structure (compressed/stretched) of helical poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) in the formation of nanostructures (nanospheres and nanotoroids) by complexation with metal ions of diverse valences is demonstrated. PPAs bearing the same chelating units [anilide of (R)-methoxyphenylacetic acid] but displaying different helical scaffolds show great differences in their nanostructuration due to the different secondary structures of their helices despite the analogous ways in which their mono- and divalent metal ions form complexes. This key 3-D structural feature has not been taken into account previously when studying the nanostructuration of helical polymer-metal complexes (HPMCs).

Heuristics for precise supramolecular control of soft matter structure and properties - 2,3,4-tris(dodecyloxy)benzenesulfonates with alkaline and organic cations

Comprehensive analysis of the structure and phase behavior for a number of 2,3,4-tris(dodecyloxy)benzenesulfonates with alkali metal and organic focal groups revealed that the shape of the mesogenic group plays a decisive role in phase behavior of the material. Cubic and layered types of packing prevail when the size of the cation is small and, thus, the shape of the mesogenic molecule is close to conic one. With increasing cation size, the shape becomes more tapered, and columnar mesophases appear to be more stable. Interactions of the focal groups however determine the stability of mesophases. Comparatively strong interactions may, morever, provide substantial deviations from a phase diagram plotting the transition temperatures versus the radius of focal group, as in the case of pyridinium 2,3,4-tris(dodecyloxy)benzenesulfonate.

Hierarchical Self-Organization of AB n Dendron-like Molecules into a Supramolecular Lattice Sequence

To understand the hierarchical self-organization behaviors of soft materials as well as their dependence on molecular geometry, a series of AB n dendron-like molecules based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles were designed and synthesized. The apex of these molecules is a hydrophilic POSS cage with 14 hydroxyl groups (denoted DPOSS). At its periphery, there are different numbers (n = 1-8) of hydrophobic POSS cages with seven isobutyl groups (denoted BPOSS), connected to the apical DPOSS via flexible dendron type linker(s). By varying the BPOSS number from one to seven, a supramolecular lattice formation sequence ranging from lamella (DPOSS-BPOSS), double gyroid (space group of Ia3̅d, DPOSS-BPOSS2), hexagonal cylinder (plane group of P6mm, DPOSS-BPOSS3), Frank-Kasper A15 (space group of Pm3̅n, DPOSS-BPOSS4, DPOSS-BPOSS5, and DPOSS-BPOSS6), to Frank-Kasper sigma (space group of P42/mnm, DPOSS-BPOSS7) phases can be observed. The nanostructure formations in this series of AB n dendron-like molecules are mainly directed by the molecular geometric shapes. Furthermore, within each spherical motif, the spherical core consists hydrophilic DPOSS cages with flexible linkages, while the hydrophobic BPOSS cages form the relative rigid shell, and contact with neighbors to provide decreased interfaces among the spherical motifs for constructing final polyhedral motifs in these Frank-Kasper lattices. This study provides the design principle of molecules with specific geometric shapes and functional groups to achieve anticipated structures and macroscopic properties.

Stability of icosahedral quasicrystals in a simple model with two-length scales

The phase behaviour of a free energy functional with two length scales is examined by comparing the free energy of different candidate phases including three-dimensional icosahedral quasicrystals. Accurate free energy of the quasicrystals has been obtained using the recently developed projection method. The results reveal that the icosahedral quasicrystal and body-centred-cubic spherical phase are the stable ordered phases of the model. Furthermore, the difference between the results obtained from the projection method and the one-mode approximation has been analyzed in detail. The present study extends previous results on two-dimensional systems, demonstrating that the interactions between density waves at two length scales can stabilize two- and three-dimensional quasicrystals.

Tetrahedral Arrangements of Perylene Bisimide Columns via Supramolecular Orientational Memory

Chiral, shape, and liquid crystalline memory effects are well-known to produce commercial macroscopic materials with important applications as springs, sensors, displays, and memory devices. A supramolecular orientational memory effect that provides complex nanoscale arrangements was only recently reported. This supramolecular orientational memory was demonstrated to preserve the molecular orientation and packing within supramolecular units of a self-assembling cyclotriveratrylene crown at the nanoscale upon transition between its columnar hexagonal and Pm3̅n cubic periodic arrays. Here we report the discovery of supramolecular orientational memory in a dendronized perylene bisimide (G2-PBI) that self-assembles into tetrameric crowns and subsequently self-organizes into supramolecular columns and spheres. This supramolecular orientation memory upon transition between columnar hexagonal and body-centered cubic (BCC) mesophases preserves the 3-fold cubic [111] orientations rather than the 4-fold [100] axes, generating an unusual tetrahedral arrangement of supramolecular columns. These results indicate that the supramolecular orientational memory concept may be general for periodic arrays of self-assembling dendrons and dendrimers as well as for other periodic and quasiperiodic nanoscale organizations comprising supramolecular spheres, generated from other organized complex soft matter including block copolymers and surfactants.

Simultaneous Adjustment of Size and Helical Sense of Chiral Nanospheres and Nanotubes Derived from an Axially Racemic Poly(phenylacetylene)

Nanospheres and nanotubes with full control of their size and helical sense are obtained in chloroform from the axially racemic chiral poly(phenylacetylene) poly-(R)-1 using either Ag⁺ as both chiral inducer and cross-linking agent or Na⁺ as chiral inducer and Ag⁺ as cross-linking agent. The size is tuned by the polymer/ion ratio while the helical sense is modulated by the polymer/cosolvent (i.e., MeCN) ratio. In this way, the helicity and the size of the nanoparticles can be easily interconverted by very simple experimental changes.

A general route to chiral nanostructures from helical polymers: P/M switch via dynamic metal coordination

Macroscopically enantiomeric chiral nanospheres made from P or M helical polymer metal complexes can be obtained via dynamic coordination chemistry.

Complex Arrangement of Orthogonal Nanoscale Columns via a Supramolecular Orientational Memory Effect

Memory effects, including shape, chirality, and liquid-crystallinity, have enabled macroscopic materials with novel functions. However, the generation of complex supramolecular nanosystems via memory effects has not yet been investigated. Here, we report a cyclotriveratrylene-crown (CTV) compound that self-assembles into supramolecular columns and spheres forming, respectively, hexagonal and cubic mesophases. Upon transition from one phase to the other, an epitaxial relationship holds, via an unprecedented supramolecular orientational memory effect. Specifically, the molecular orientation and columnar character of supramolecular packing is preserved in the cubic phase, providing an otherwise inaccessible structure comprising orthogonally oriented domains of supramolecular columns. The continuous columnar character of tetrahedrally distorted supramolecular spheres self-organized from the CTV derivative in the faces of the Pm3̅n lattice is the basis of this supramolecular orientational memory, which holds throughout cycling in temperature between the two phases. This concept is expected to be general for other combinations of periodic and quasiperiodic arrays generated from supramolecular spheres upon transition to supramolecular columns.

Triptycene-Based Chiral Macrocyclic Hosts for Highly Enantioselective Recognition of Chiral Guests Containing a Trimethylamino Group

A new class of chiral macrocyclic arene composed of three chiral 2,6-dihydroxyltriptycene subunits bridged by methylene groups was designed and synthesized. Structural studies showed that the macrocyclic molecule adopts a hex-nut-like structure with a helical chiral cavity and highly fixed conformation. Efficient resolution was achieved through the introduction of chiral auxiliaries to give a couple of enantiopure macrocycles, which exhibited high enantioselectivity towards three pairs of chiral compounds containing a trimethylamino group.
