Abstract
Medium viscosity strongly affects the dynamics of solvated species and can drastically alter the deactivation pathways of their excited states. This study demonstrates the utility of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) as a room-temperature solid-state medium for optical spectroscopy. As a thermoset elastic polymer, PDMS is transparent in the near ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared spectral regions. It is easy to mould into any shape, forming surfaces with a pronounced smoothness. While PDMS is broadly used for the fabrication of microfluidic devices, it swells in organic solvents, presenting severe limitations for the utility of such devices for applications employing non-aqueous fluids. Nevertheless, this swelling is reversible, which proves immensely beneficial for loading samples into the PDMS solid matrix. Transferring molecular-rotor dyes (used for staining prokaryotic cells and amyloid proteins) from non-viscous solvents into PDMS induces orders-of-magnitude enhancement of their fluorescence quantum yield and excited-state lifetimes, providing mechanistic insights about their deactivation pathways. These findings demonstrate the unexplored potential of PDMS as a solid solvent for optical applications.

Abstract
Wettability of surfaces remains of paramount importance for understanding various natural and artificial colloidal and interfacial phenomena at various length and time scales. One of the problems discussed in this work is the wettability alteration of a three-phase system comprising high salinity brine as the aqueous phase, Doddington sandstone as porous rock, and decane as the nonaqueous phase liquid. The study utilizes the technique of in situ contact angle measurements of the several 2D projections of the identified 3D oil phase droplets from the 3D images of the saturated sandstone miniature core plugs obtained by X-ray microcomputed tomography (micro-CT). Earlier works that utilize in situ contact angles measurements were carried out for a single plane. The saturated rock samples were scanned at initial saturation conditions and after aging for 21 days. This study at ambient conditions reveals that it is possible to change the initially intermediate water-wet conditions of the sandstone rock surface to a weakly water wetting state on aging by alkanes using induced polarization at the interface. The study adds to the understanding of initial wettability conditions as well as the oil migration process of the paraffinic oil-bearing sandstone reservoirs. Further, it complements the knowledge of the wettability alteration of the rock surface due to chemisorption, usually done by nonrepresentative technique of silanization of rock surface in experimental investigations.

Abstract
Reichardt's empirical ET(30) polarity parameter has been established as appropriate polarity scale for ionic liquids. In this study, the relationships of ET(30) of ionic liquids with the empirical Kamlet-Taft polarity parameters α (hydrogen bond donating ability), β (hydrogen bond accepting ability) and π* (dipolarity/polarizability) as well as Catalán's parameter set SA (solvent acidity), SB (solvent basicity), SP (solvent polarizability) and SdP (solvent dipolarity) are examined by means of multiple square correlation analyses. Several subtasks were carried out to address this main concern. First, the influence of anion structure on ET(30) polarity parameters for various ionic liquids are investigated by use of nine differently substituted pyridinio phenolate betaine dyes of the Reichardt type. It is assumed that halide anions can have an effect on the ET(30) parameter. In the second part, the Kamlet-Taft π* parameters have been independently determined for several protic ionic liquids using 4-tert-butyl-2-(dicyanomethylene)-5-[4-(diethylamino)-benzylidene]-Δ3-thiazoline (Th) and N,N-diethyl-4-nitroaniline (DENA) to show the impact of the hydrogen bond donating ability of the IL on the actual π* values as function of probe. α and SA values have been measured using the dicyano-bis(1,10-phenanthroline) iron(ii) complex (Fe) as HBD probe. Finally, the newly determined Reichardt ET(30), Kamlet-Taft and Catalán parameters of ionic liquids were used in addition to literature data to prove correlations of ET(30) with α and π* as well as of ET(30) with SA and SdP. Linear correlations of SdP with the molar concentration of the ionic liquid are highlighted.

Abstract
Determination of molecular orientation at interfaces by vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy (VSFG) requires measurements using at least two different polarization combinations of the incoming visible, IR, and generated SFG beams. We present a new method for the simultaneous collection of different VSFG polarization outputs by use of a modified 4f pulseshaper to create a simple frequency comb. Via the frequency comb, two visible pulses are separated spectrally but aligned in space and time to interact at the sample with mixed polarization IR light. This produces two different VSFG outputs that are separated by their frequencies at the monochromator rather than their polarizations. Spectra were collected from organic thin films with different polarization combinations to show the reliability of the method. The results show that the optical arrangement is immune to fluctuations in laser power, beam pointing, and IR spectral shape.

Abstract
Optical interference effects can be a nuisance in spectroscopy, especially in nonlinear experiments in which multiple incoming and outgoing beams are present. Vibrational sum frequency generation is particularly susceptible to interference effects because it is often applied to planar, layered materials, driving many of its practitioners to great lengths to avoid signal generation from multiple interfaces. In this perspective, we take a positive view of this metaphorical "lemon" and demonstrate how optical interference can be used as a tool to extract subtle changes in interfacial vibrational spectra. Specifically, we use small frequency shifts at a buried interface in an organic field-effect transistor to determine the fractional charge per molecule during device operation. The transfer matrix approach to nonlinear signal modeling is general and readily applied to complex layered samples that are increasingly popular in modern studies. More importantly, we show that a failure to consider interference effects can lead to erroneous interpretations of nonlinear data.
