Abstract
A series of U(IV) complexes bearing alkyl and chloride ligands in the trans configuration was synthesized and characterized. Starting with the diastereopure U(IV) trans-dichloride complex meso-( tBu2PONO)UCl2(dtbpy) (1, tBu2PONO = 2,6-bis((di-tert-butylphosphino)methanolato)pyridine), four distinct alkyl groups were employed to prepare ( tBu2PONO)U(R)Cl(dtbpy), where R = (trimethylsilyl)methyl (neosilyl), 2a, R = 2,2-dimethyl propyl (neopentyl), 2b, and R = 2-methyl-2-phenyl propyl (neophyl), 2c. Alkylation occurs with specificity but generates a predominant species and a minor species corresponding to anti/syn regioisomers relative to the tBu2P groups of the ligand. For synthesis using R = methyl, the dimethyl complex ( tBu2PONO)U(Me)2(dtbpy), 2d, was prepared; the addition of 1 equiv of MeLi produced a mixture of products. Complexes 2a-2d were characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), UV-vis-nIR, and 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopies.

Abstract
(BCHT-NCN)H3 (1) [1,6-bis(methylene(bis-2,6-diisopropylaniline)(benzo)cycloheptatriene)] was synthesized by nucleophilic substitution treating 1,6-bis(methylenebromide)(benzo)cycloheptatriene with 2 equiv of Li[2,6-iPr2C6H3NH], Li[Dipp-NH]. Triple deprotonation of (BCHT-NCN)H3 (1) using n-BuLi yields the deprotonation product [(BCHT-NCN)Li3] (2), which crystallizes as a dimer [{[BCHT-NCN]Li3(Et2O)2}2] (2)2. Coordination compounds of the trianionic pincer ligand were obtained with SnCl2, YCl3(THF)3.5, and HfCl4(THF)2: [(BCHT-NCN)SnLi] (3), [(BCHT-NCN)Y(THF)2] (4), [(BCHT-NCN)HfCl2][Li(THF)4] (5), respectively. A hafnium hydride complex [(BCHT-NCN)HfH(HBEt3)][K(Et2O)2] (6) was isolated after reaction of 5 with K[HBEt3]. A MeNHC substitution product [(BCHT-NCN)HfCl(MeNHC)] (7) was synthesized treating compound 5 with MeNHC at rt. Following an n-BuLi reaction of 7 gives an alkyl complex [(BCHT-NCN)Hf(n-Bu)(MeNHC)] (8). Thermolysis of 7 yields the isomerization product [(BCHT-NCN#)HfCl(MeNHC)] (9), which was transferred into a methyl complex [(BCHT-NCN#)HfMe(MeNHC)] (10) upon treatment with MeMgBr. Hydride abstraction from complex 9 leads to a cationic complex [(BCHT-NCN+)HfCl(MeNHC)][Al(OtBuF)4] (11).

Abstract
Halide exchange of (Cp3tms)2ThCl2 (1; Cp3tms = η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2) with Me3SiI furnishes (Cp3tms)2ThI2 (2), which is then reduced with potassium graphite (KC8) in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridine to give the thorium bipyridyl metallocene (Cp3tms)2Th(bipy) (3) in good yield. Complex 3 was fully characterized and readily reacted with various small molecules. For example, 3 may serve as a synthetic equivalent for the (Cp3tms)2Th(II) fragment when exposed to CuI, Ph2S2, organic azides, and CS2. Moreover, upon the addition of thiobenzophenone Ph2CS, p-methylbenzaldehyde (p-MeC6H4)CHO, benzophenone Ph2CO, amidate PhCONH(p-tolyl), seleno-ketone (p,p'-dimethoxy), selenobenzophenone (p-MeOPh)2CSe, di(p-tolyl)methanimine (p-tolyl)2C═NH, 1,2-di(benzylidene)hydrazine (PhCH═N)2, and nitriles PhCN, PhCH2CN, and Ph2CHCN C-C coupling results to give (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CS)] (8), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (9), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CO)] (10), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolylNH)(Ph)CO}] (11), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-MeOPh)2CSe}] (12), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolyl)2CNH}] (13), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (14), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCN)] (16), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCH2CN)] (17), and (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CHCN)] (18), respectively. However, when thiazole is added to 3, the dimeric sulfido complex [(Cp3tms)2Th]2[μ-(bipy)CH2NCHCHS]2 (15) can be isolated. Moreover, the addition of isonitriles such as Me3CNC and PhCH2NC to 3 results in C-N bond cleavage and C-C coupling processes to form the thorium isocyanido amido complexes (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(Me3C)bipy](NC) (19) and (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(PhCH2)bipy](NC) (20), respectively. Nevertheless, upon exposure of 3 to (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane Me3SiCHN2, the bis-amido complex (Cp3tms)2Th[5,6-(Me3SiCH)bipy] (21), concomitant with N2 release, is isolated.

Abstract
Understanding the fundamental chemistry of soft N,S-donor ligands with actinides across the series is critical for separation science toward sustainable nuclear energy. This task is particularly challenging when the ligands are redox active. We herein report a series of actinyl complexes with a N,S-donor redox-active ligand that stabilizes different oxidation states across the actinide series. These complexes are isolated and characterized in the gas phase, along with high-level electronic structure studies. The redox-active N,S-donor ligand in the products, C5H4NS, acts as a monoanion in [UVIO2(C5H4NS-)]+ but as a neutral radical with unpaired electrons localized on the sulfur atom in [NpVO2(C5H4NS•)]+ and [PuVO2(C5H4NS•)]+, resulting in different oxidation states for uranium and transuranic elements. This is rationalized by considering the relative energy levels of actinyl(VI) 5f orbitals and S 3p lone pair orbitals of the C5H4NS- ligand and the cooperativity between An-N and An-S bonds that provides additional stability for the transuranic elements.

Abstract
The uranium bipyridyl metallocene, [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(bipy) (2), is readily accessible in good yield by adding potassium graphite (KC8) to a mixture of [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2UCl2 (1) and 2,2'-bipyridine. Compound 2 was fully characterized and employed for small-molecule activation. It has been demonstrated that 2 may serve as a synthon for [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(II) fragment in the presence of Ph2E2 (E = S, Se), alkynes, and a variety of hetero-unsaturated molecules such as diazabutadienes, azine (Ph2C═N)2, o-benzoquinone, pyridine N-oxide, CS2, isothiocyanates, and organic azides. However, upon exposure of 2 to thio-ketone Ph2CS, aldehyde p-MePhCHO, ketone Ph2CO, imine PhCH═NPh, azine (PhCH═N)2, and nitrile PhCN, it may also promote C-C coupling reactions forming [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(bipy)(Ph2CS)] (16), [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (17), [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(bipy)(Ph2CO)] (18), [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(bipy)(PhCHNPh)] (19), [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (20), and [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(N2C10H7C(Ph)NH)] (22), respectively, in quantitative conversion. Furthermore, in the presence of CuI, a single-electron transfer (SET) process is observed to yield the uranium(III) iodide complex [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(I)(bipy) (15).

Abstract
Addition of [UI2(THF)3(μ-OMe)]2·THF (2·THF) to THF solutions containing 6 equiv. of K[C14H10] generates the heteroleptic dimeric complexes [K(18-crown-6)(THF)2]2[U(η6-C14H10)(η4-C14H10)(μ-OMe)]2·4THF (118C6·4THF) and {[K(THF)3][U(η6-C14H10)(η4-C14H10)(μ-OMe)]}2 (1THF) upon crystallization of the products in THF in the presence or absence of 18-crown-6, respectively. Both 118C6·4THF and 1THF are thermally stable in the solid-state at room temperature; however, after crystallization, they become insoluble in THF or DME solutions and instead gradually decompose upon standing. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals 118C6·4THF and 1THF to be structurally similar, possessing uranium centres sandwiched between bent anthracenide ligands of mixed tetrahapto and hexahapto ligation modes. Yet, the two complexes are distinguished by the close contact potassium-arenide ion pairing that is seen in 1THF but absent in 118C6·4THF, which is observed to have a significant effect on the electronic characteristics of the two complexes. Structural analysis, SQUID magnetometry data, XANES spectral characterization, and computational analyses are generally consistent with U(iv) formal assignments for the metal centres in both 118C6·4THF and 1THF, though noticeable differences are detected between the two species. For instance, the effective magnetic moment of 1THF (3.74 μB) is significantly lower than that of 118C6·4THF (4.40 μB) at 300 K. Furthermore, the XANES data shows the U LIII-edge absorption energy for 1THF to be 0.9 eV higher than that of 118C6·4THF, suggestive of more oxidized metal centres in the former. Of note, CASSCF calculations on the model complex {[U(η6-C14H10)(η4-C14H10)(μ-OMe)]2}2− (1*) shows highly polarized uranium–arenide interactions defined by π-type bonds where the metal contributions are primarily comprised by the 6d-orbitals (7.3 ± 0.6%) with minor participation from the 5f-orbitals (1.5 ± 0.5%). These unique complexes provide new insights into actinide–arenide bonding interactions and show the sensitivity of the electronic structures of the uranium atoms to coordination sphere effects. Use of Chatt metal-arene protocols with uranium leads to the synthesis of the first well-characterized, unsupported actinide–arenide sandwich complexes. The electronic structures of the actinide centres show a key sensitivity to ion pairing effects.![]()

Abstract
Uranyl complexes of aryl-substituted α-diimine ligands gbha (UO2-1a-f) and phen-BIAN (UO2-2a-f) [gbha (1) = glyoxal bis(2-hydroxyanil); phen-BIAN (2) = N,N'-bis(iminophenol)acenaphthene; R = OMe (a), t-bu (b), H (c), Me (d), F (e), and naphthyl (f)] were designed, prepared, and characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, NMR, UV-vis, and electrochemical methods. These ligand frameworks contain a salen-type O-N-N-O binding pocket but are redox-noninnocent, leading to unusual metal complex behaviors. Here, we describe three solid-state structures of uranyl complexes UO2-1b, UO2-1c, and UO2-1f and observe manifestations of ligand noninnocence for the U(VI) complexes UO2-1b and UO2-1c. The impacts of accessible π-systems and ligand substitution on the axial uranium-oxo interactions were evaluated spectroscopically via the intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT) processes that dominate the absorption spectra of these complexes and through changes to the asymmetric (ν3) O═U═O stretching frequency. This, in combination with electrochemical data, reveals the effects of the inclusion of the conjugated acenaphthene backbone and the importance of ligand electronic structure on uranyl's bonding interactions.

Abstract
The boroxide ligand [OBAr2]- (Ar = Mes, Trip) is shown to be able to support both UIII and UIV centres for the first time. The synthesis and structures of homoleptic and heteroleptic UIII and UIV complexes are reported. The UX3 complex with larger substituents, [U(OBTrip2)3]2, exhibits greater thermal stability compared to less encumbered [U(OBMes2)3]2 but reacts with a smaller range of the small molecules tested to date. Initial studies on their capacity to participate in small molecule chemistry show that dark purple [U(OBMes2)3]2 binds and/or reductively activates a variety of small molecules such as pyridine-oxide, triphenylphosphineoxide, sulfur, and dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. While [U(OBMes2)3]2 shows no reaction with CO or CO2, [U(OBTrip2)3]2 is oxidised by both, in the former case forming [U(OBTrip2)4], and in the latter case forming a small quantity of the structurally characterised μ-carbonate product [(μ-CO3){U(OBTrip2)3}2].

Abstract
Flash reduction of Cp'3U (Cp' = C5H4SiMe3) in a column of potassium graphite in the presence of 2.2.2-cryptand generates crystalline [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][Cp'3U], the first isolable molecular U(2+) complex. To ensure that this was not the U(3+) hydride, [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][Cp'3UH], which could be crystallographically similar, the hydride complex was synthesized by addition of KH to Cp'3U and by reduction of H2 by the U(2+) complex and was confirmed to be a different compound. Density functional theory calculations indicate a 5f(3)6d(1) quintet ground state for the [Cp'3U](-) anion and match the observed strong transitions in its optical spectrum.

Abstract
Why do U react like that? Reaction of 2-Li-C6H4CH2NMe2 with [MCl4(DME)n] (M=Th, n=2; M=U, n=0) results in the formation of a thorium aryl complex, [Th(2-C6H4CH2NMe2)4] or a uranium benzyne complex, [Li][U(2,3-C6H3CH2NMe2)(2-C6H4CH2NMe2)3]. A DFT analysis suggests that the formation of a benzyne complex with U but not with Th is a kinetic and not thermodynamic effect.

Abstract
We report our recent DFT mechanistic study on the functionalization of CO2 and CS2 promoted by a trivalent uranium complex (Tp*)2UCH2Ph. In the calculations, the uranium atom is described by a quasi-relativistic 5f-in-core ECP basis set (LPP) developed for the trivalent uranium cation, which was qualified by the calculations with a quasi-relativistic small core ECP basis set (SPP) for uranium. According to our calculations, the functionalization proceeds in a stepwise manner, and the CO2 or CS2 does not interact with the central uranium atom to form a stable complex prior to the reaction due to the steric hindrance from the bulky ligands but directly cleaves the U-C (benzyl) bond by forming a C-C covalent bond. The released coordination site of uranium is concomitantly occupied by one chalcogen atom of the incoming molecule and gives an intermediate with the uranium atom interacting with the functionalized CO2 or CS2 in an η(1) fasion. This step is followed by a reorientation of the (dithio)carboxylate side chain of the newly formed PhCH2CE2(-) (E = O, S) ligand to give the corresponding product. Energetically, the first step is characterized as the rate-determining step with a barrier of 9.5 (CO2) or 25.0 (CS2) kcal/mol, and during the reaction, the chalcogen atoms are reduced, while the methylene of the benzyl group is oxidized. Comparison of the results from SPP and LPP calculations indicates that our calculations qualify the use of an LPP treatment of the uranium atom toward a reasonable description of the model systems in the present study.

Abstract
The electronic structures of two uranium compounds supported by redox-active α-diimine ligands, ((Mes)DAB(Me))(2)U(THF) (1) and Cp(2)U((Mes)DAB(Me)) (2) ((Mes)DAB(Me) = [ArN═C(Me)C(Me)═NAr]; Ar = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl (Mes)), have been investigated using both density functional theory and multiconfigurational self-consistent field methods. Results from these studies have established that both uranium centers are tetravalent, that the ligands are reduced by two electrons, and that the ground states of these molecules are triplets. Energetically low-lying singlet states are accessible, and some transitions to these states are visible in the electronic absorption spectrum.

Abstract
Uranium compounds supported by redox-active α-diimine ligands, which have methyl groups on the ligand backbone and bulky mesityl substituents on the nitrogen atoms {(Mes)DAB(Me) = [ArN═C(Me)C(Me)═NAr], where Ar = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl (Mes)}, are reported. The addition of 2 equiv of (Mes)DAB(Me), 3 equiv of KC(8), and 1 equiv of UI(3)(THF)(4) produced the bis(ligand) species ((Mes)DAB(Me))(2)U(THF) (1). The metallocene derivative, Cp(2)U((Mes)DAB(Me)) (2), was generated by the addition of an equimolar ratio of (Mes)DAB(Me) and KC(8) to Cp(3)U. The bond lengths in the molecular structure of both species confirm that the α-diimine ligands have been doubly reduced to form ene-diamide ligands. Characterization by electronic absorption spectroscopy shows weak, sharp transitions in the near-IR region of the spectrum and, in combination with the crystallographic data, is consistent with the formulation that tetravalent uranium ions are present and supported by ene-diamide ligands. This interpretation was verified by U L(III)-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy and by variable-temperature magnetic measurements. The magnetic data are consistent with singlet ground states at low temperature and variable-temperature dependencies that would be expected for uranium(IV) species. However, both complexes exhibit low magnetic moments at room temperature, with values of 1.91 and 1.79 μ(B) for 1 and 2, respectively. Iodomethane was used to test the reactivity of 1 and 2 for multielectron transfer. While 2 showed no reactivity with CH(3)I, the addition of 2 equiv of iodomethane to 1 resulted in the formation of a uranium(IV) monoiodide species, ((Mes)DAB(Me))((Mes)DAB(Me2))UI {3; (Mes)DAB(Me2) = [ArN═C(Me)C(Me(2))NAr]}, which was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and U M(4)- and M(5)-edge XANES. Confirmation of the structure was also attained by deuterium labeling studies, which showed that a methyl group was added to the ene-diamide ligand carbon backbone.

Abstract
Treatment of ThCl(4)(DME)(2) or UCl(4) with 1 equiv of dilithiumbis(iminophosphorano) methandiide, [Li(2)C(Ph(2)P═NSiMe(3))(2)] (1), afforded the chloro actinide carbene complexes [Cl(2)M(C(Ph(2)P═NSiMe(3))(2))] (2 (M = Th) and 3 (M = U)) in situ. Stable PCP metal-carbene complexes [Cp(2)Th(C(Ph(2)P═NSiMe(3))(2))] (4), [Cp(2)U(C(Ph(2)P═NSiMe(3))(2))] (5), [TpTh(C(Ph(2)P═NSiMe(3))(2))Cl] (6), and [TpU(C(Ph(2)P═NSiMe(3))(2))Cl] (7) were generated from 2 or 3 by further reaction with 2 equiv of thallium(I) cyclopentadienide (CpTl) in THF to yield 4 or 5 or with 1 equiv of potassium hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl) borate (TpK) also in THF to give 6 or 7, respectively. The derivative complexes were isolated, and their crystal structures were determined by X-ray diffraction. All of these U (or Th)-carbene complexes (4-7) possess a very short M (Th or U)═carbene bond with evidence for multiple bond character. Gaussian 03 DFT calculations indicate that the M═C double bond is constructed by interaction of the 5f and 6d orbitals of the actinide metal with carbene 2p orbitals of both π and σ character. Complex 3 reacted with acetonitrile or benzonitrile to cyclo-add C≡N to the U═carbon double bond, thereby forming a new C-C bond in a new chelated quadridentate ligand in the bridged dimetallic complexes (9 and 10). A single carbon-U bond is retained. The newly coordinated uranium complex dimerizes with one equivalent of unconverted 3 using two chlorides and the newly formed imine derived from the nitrile as three connecting bridges. In addition, a new crystal structure of [CpUCl(3)(THF)(2)] (8) was determined by X-ray diffraction.
