Abstract
Structural restriction of the sulfonamide bond was used to design sultams with abnormal geometric parameters. Based on analysis of tertiary aliphatic sulfonamides published in the Cambridge crystallographic database, Paquette's sultams (i.e., bridged bicyclic sultams with a bridgehead nitrogen atom) were outlined, and a number of these compounds (including the novel smallest representative, 2-thia-1-azabicyclo[2.1.1]hexane 2,2-dioxide) were synthesized by cyclization of the corresponding amino sulfonyl fluorides. A series of tertiary aliphatic sulfonamides was studied by crystallographic and quantum chemical methods. It was found that the s-character of the nitrogen lone pair is the most important factor defining properties of the S-N bond. Thus, going from the sp3-hybrid lone pair in common sulfonamides to the sp-like lone pair in the smallest Paquette's sultam resulted in an increase in S-N bond length by ca. 0.06 Å. The strain energy of ca. 30 kcal/mol was predicted for the latter compound, which was higher than for any existing sulfonamides studied.

Abstract
Bridged lactams represent the most effective and wide-ranging method of constraining the amide bond in a non-planar conformation. A previous comprehensive review on this topic was published in 2013 (Chem. Rev.2013, 113, 5701–5765). In the present review, which is published as a part of the Special Issue on Amide Bond Activation, we present an overview of the recent developments in the field of bridged lactams that have taken place in the last five years and present a critical assessment of the current status of bridged lactams in synthetic and physical organic chemistry. This review covers the period from 2014 until the end of 2018 and is intended as an update to Chem. Rev.2013, 113, 5701–5765. In addition to bridged lactams, the review covers recent advances in the chemistry of bridged sultams, bridged enamines and related non-planar structures.

Abstract
We report that chiral 3-substituted γ-sultam α-carbanions undergo diastereoselective alkylation reactions with alkyl halides to predominantly produce trans-3,5-disubstituted γ-sultam products. Quantum mechanical calculations provided a stereoelectronic rationale for the observed diastereoselectivity.

Abstract
A highly efficient strategy for the formation of medium-sized-ring ethers and amines based on a gold-catalyzed cascade reaction, involving enynyl ester isomerization and intramolecular [3+2] cyclization, has been developed. Various multisubstituted medium-sized-ring unsaturated ethers and amines were obtained through this transformation. This method represents one of the relatively few transition metal catalyzed intramolecular cycloaddition reactions for medium-sized ring synthesis.

Abstract
Medium-bridged twisted lactams, in which a non-planar amide bond is achieved by incorporating the nitrogen atom at the bridgehead position in a medium-sized heterocycle, offer an attractive setting in which to study the properties of distorted amide linkages. This Emerging Area article will describe progress in the preparation and study of these compounds. This work shows that compounds containing an even moderately distorted amide bond display useful and unusual chemical properties while retaining a measure of stability that enables their study.

Abstract
The addition of amines or aziridines to prenylacetate is catalyzed by palladium phosphine complexes. The first-formed products have recently been shown to be the branched olefins R2NCMe2CH=CH2, R = alkyl, or R2 = 1,2-C6H10, for example. DFT calculations using the MPW1K functional were performed on reactions of the suspected intermediate η3-prenyl complex [Pd(η3-Me2CCHCH2)(PH3)2]+ with dimethylamine and ethylene imine. The activation barrier for the nucleophilic attack by the amine or the aziridine is calculated to be similar for either the sterically hindered site of the π-allyl ligand to produce the branched olefin complex or the unhindered site to give the linear olefin complex. Therefore, these calculations do not reveal the experimentally observed preference for attack. This observation, along with the experimental observation of lack of isomerization of the branched olefin product of the aziridine reactions, appears to rule out the intermediacy of a π-allyl complex [Pd(η3-Me2CCHCH2)L2]+, L = phosphine or L2 = diphosphine in the C–N bond-forming reaction.Key words: allyl palladium, amine, aziridine, DFT, mechanism, catalysis.

Abstract
A convergent strategy has allowed access to bridgehead sultam 9 and the related carboxamides 10 and 11. The synthetic routing proceeds via the coupling of a suitably constructed dienamine to either o-iodobenzenesulfonyl chloride or o-iodobenzoyl chloride to generate the amides. The application in sequence of ring-closing metathesis and an intramolecular Heck reaction gave rise to advanced tricyclic intermediates. The final two steps involved bromination in liquid bromine and proper 2-fold dehydrobromination. The latter maneuver was best achieved with tetrabutylammonium fluoride in DMSO at elevated temperature. While the irradiation of 9 led principally via SO2-N bond homolysis and [1,5] sigmatropic rearrangement to generate 37, 10 proceeded via disrotatory cyclization to the exo cyclobutene 39, and 11 resisted photoisomerization. The inertness of 11 may stem from its distorted structural features which force its conjugated diene double bonds to be rigidly oriented 32 degrees out-of-plane. The unique ability of the sulfonamide linkage to excited-state homolysis holds comparative interest.

Abstract
A route to the doubly unsaturated bridgehead sultam 12 has been developed. When irradiated at 350 nm, this conjugated diene is isomerized via a two-photon process to the structurally novel spiro heterocycle 17 constituted of cyclobutene, thietane dioxide, and pyrrolidine rings. A probable mechanism for the generation of 17 and select reactions thereof are reported. [reaction: see text]

Abstract
[reaction: see text] This report details the kinetic responses of nine compounds of type 6 to ring-closing metathesis as promoted by 2 to give the identical product 7. The experimental observations have been subjected to Hammett analysis. The rho value for the composite aromatic derivatives (R = p-XC(6)H(4)-) differs from that of the aliphatic series, although both are negative because electron-donating groups accelerate the reaction.

Abstract
N,N-Bis(but-3-enyl)amines 5a-i were prepared in overall 74% yield from 1-(triphenylphosphoroylideneaminoalkyl)benzotriazole using an aza-Wittig reaction with aldehydes followed by a double Grignard reaction with allylmagnesium bromide. Use of vinyl or 1-propynylmagnesium bromide and allylmagnesium bromide in a sequential fashion also formed the expected doubly unsaturated amines 9a,b and 12, respectively.

Abstract
Syntheses of the first bridgehead sultams and the only known bridgehead disulfonimide are described. Both approaches capitalize on the electrophilicity of alpha-sulfonyl radicals and their propensity to undergo intramolecular ring closure. Where double bonds are concerned, 5-exo and 6-exo pathways operate preferentially as long as structural strain is not excessive. When the reaction center is a carbon-carbon triple bond, the first cyclization gives rise to vinyl radicals that hold sufficient reactivity to capture solvent benzene. In the case of 45, this sequential reaction leads importantly to the introduction of a styrene functionality sufficiently activated to allow a second ring closure to be kinetically feasible. The solid-state structural features of 12 and 17 have been elucidated by X-ray crystallographic methods. Despite key differences from the norm in the alignment of the nitrogen lone pair relative to the adjacent sulfonyl groups, these compounds exhibit good hydrolytic stability. For 13, generation of the alpha-sulfonamide carbanion is possible and regiospecific oxidation with chromyl acetate has been achieved.

Abstract
The N-(bromomethanesulfonyl) azabicyclic ketones 2a-c and their exo-methylene analogues 1a-c were prepared. Our examination of the radical-induced behavior of the latter triad provided experimental evidence for the propensity of the b and c systems to engage in 7-endo cyclization. For 1a, only reductive debromination was observed. In no instance was ring closure by the 6-exo radical mode seen. As concerns ketones 2a-c, all three showed a remarkable facility for engaging in intramolecular S(N)2 displacement in the presence of KHMDS. Yields at the mid-80% level were realized irrespective of the value of n. Molecular mechanics calculations of the Monte Carlo type were performed on several conformational isomers and product classes in an effort to provide support for the explanatory conclusions offered as rationale for the collective experimental observations.
