Selective Formation of S4- and T-Symmetric Supramolecular Tetrahedral Cages and Helicates in Polar Media Assembled via Cooperative Action of Coordination and Hydrogen Bonds

Self-assembly of a supramolecular spin-crossover tetrahedron

A new mononuclear iron(II) SCO compound featuring H-bonding donor and acceptor units has been synthesized and exploited to produce a purely supramolecular switchable [Fe4] tetrahedron. Magnetic and crystallographic measurements evidence a singular magnetic behavior for each of the four Fe(II) centers of the generated architecture and underscore the potential of this strategy to develop novel SCO materials.

Steric and Geometrical Frustration Generate Two Higher-Order CuI12L8 Assemblies from a Triaminotriptycene Subcomponent

The use of copper(I) in metal-organic assemblies leads readily to the formation of simple grids and helicates, whereas higher-order structures require complex ligand designs. Here, we report the clean and selective syntheses of two complex and structurally distinct CuI12L8 frameworks, 1 and 2, which assemble from the same simple triaminotriptycene subcomponent and a formylpyridine around the CuI templates. Both represent new structure types. In T-symmetric 1, the copper(I) centers describe a pair of octahedra with a common center but whose vertices are offset from each other, whereas in D3-symmetric 2, the metal ions form a distorted hexagonal prism. The syntheses of these architectures illustrate how more intricate CuI-based complexes can be prepared via subcomponent self-assembly than has been possible to date through consideration of the interplay between the subcomponent geometry and solvent and electronic effects.

Stereocontrolled Self-Assembly of a Helicate-Bridged CuI12L4 Cage That Emits Circularly Polarized Light

Control over the stereochemistry of metal-organic cages can give rise to useful functions that are entwined with chirality, such as stereoselective guest binding and chiroptical applications. Here, we report a chiral CuI12L4 pseudo-octahedral cage that self-assembled from condensation of triaminotriptycene, aminoquinaldine, and diformylpyridine subcomponents around CuI templates. The corners of this cage consist of six head-to-tail dicopper(I) helicates whose helical chirality can be controlled by the addition of enantiopure 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) during the assembly process. Chiroptical and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies elucidated the process and mechanism of stereochemical information transfer from BINOL to the cage during the assembly process. Initially formed CuI(BINOL)2 thus underwent stereoselective ligand exchange during the formation of the chiral helicate corners of the cage, which determined the overall cage stereochemistry. The resulting dicopper(I) helicate corners of the cage were also shown to generate circularly polarized luminescence.

Tailored Water-Soluble Covalent Organic Cages for Encapsulation of Pyrene and Information Encryption

Forming pyridine salts to construct covalent organic cages is an effective strategy for constructing covalent cage compounds. Covalent organic cages based on pyridine salt structures are prone to form water-soluble supramolecular compounds. Herein, we designed and synthesized a triangular prism-shaped hexagonal cage with a larger cavity and relatively flexible conformation. The supramolecular cage structure was also applied to the encapsulation of pyrene and information encryption.

Tuning the spin-crossover properties of FeII4L6 cages via the interplay of coordination motif and linker modifications

Despite the increasing number of spin-crossover FeII-based cages, the interplay between ligand modifications (e.g. coordination motif substituents and linker) is not well-understood in these multinuclear systems, limiting rational design. Here, we report a family of FeII4L6 spin-crossover cages based on 2,2'-pyridylbenzimidazoles where subtle ligand modifications lowered the spin crossover temperature in CD3CN by up to 186 K. Comparing pairs of cages, CH3 substituents on either the coordination motif or phenylene linker lowered the spin-crossover temperature by 48 K, 91 K or 186 K, attributed to electronic effects, steric effects and a combination of both, respectively. The understanding of the interplay between ligand modifications gained from this study could be harnessed on the path towards the improved rational design of spin-crossover cages.

Allosterically Regulated Guest Binding Determines Framework Symmetry for an FeII 4 L4 Cage

Self-assembly of a flexible tritopic aniline and 3-substituted 2-formylpyridine subcomponents around iron(II) templates gave rise to a low-spin FeII 4 L4 capsule, whereas a high-spin FeII 3 L2 sandwich species formed when a sterically hindered 6-methyl-2-formylpyridine was used. The FeII 4 L4 cage adopted a new structure type with S4 symmetry, having two mer-Δ and two mer-Ʌ metal vertices, as confirmed by NMR and X-ray crystallographic analysis. The flexibility of the face-capping ligand endows the resulting FeII 4 L4 framework with conformational plasticity, enabling it to adapt structurally from S4 to T or C3 symmetry upon guest binding. The cage also displayed negative allosteric cooperativity in simultaneously binding different guests within its cavity and at the apertures between its faces.

Iron(II) Mediated Supramolecular Architectures with Schiff Bases and Their Spin-Crossover Properties

Supramolecular architectures, which are formed through the combination of inorganic metal cations and organic ligands by self-assembly, are one of the techniques in modern chemical science. This kind of multi-nuclear system in various dimensionalities can be implemented in various applications such as sensing, storage/cargo, display and molecular switching. Iron(II) mediated spin-crossover (SCO) supramolecular architectures with Schiff bases have attracted the attention of many investigators due to their structural novelty as well as their potential application possibilities. In this paper, we review a number of supramolecular SCO architectures of iron(II) with Schiff base ligands exhibiting varying geometrical possibilities. The structural and SCO behavior of these complexes are also discussed in detail.

Fullerene Complexation in a Hydrogen-Bonded Porphyrin Receptor via Induced-Fit: Cooperative Action of Tautomerization and C-H···π Interactions

A supramolecular chiral hydrogen-bonded tetrameric aggregate possessing a large cavity and tetraarylporphyrin substituents was assembled using alternating 4H- and 2H-bonds between ureidopyrimidinone and isocytosine units, respectively. The aggregation mode was rationally shifted from social to narcissistic self-sorting by changing urea substituent size only. The H-bonded tetramer forms a strong complex with C₆₀ guest, at the same time undergoing remarkable structural changes. Namely, the cavity adjusts to the guest via keto-to-enol tautomerization of the ureidopyrimidinone unit and as a result, porphyrin substituents move apart from each other in a scissor blade-like opening fashion. The rearrangement is accompanied by C-H···π interaction between the alkyl solubilizing groups and the nearby placed porphyrin π-systems. The latter interaction was found to be crucial for the guest complexation event, providing energetic compensation for otherwise costly tautomerization. We showed that only the systems possessing sufficiently long alkyl chains capable of interacting with a porphyrin ring are able to form a complex with C₆₀. The structural rearrangement of the tetramer was quantitatively characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance pulsed dipolar spectroscopy measurements using photogenerated triplets of porphyrin and C₆₀ as spin probes. Further exploring the C-H···π interaction as a decisive element for the C₆₀ recognition, we investigated the guest-induced self-sorting phenomenon using scrambled tetramer assemblies composed of two types of monomers possessing alkyl chains of different lengths. The presence of the fullerene guest has enabled the selective scavenging of monomers capable of C-H···π interaction to form homo-tetrameric aggregates.

Synthesis of a Tetrahedral Metal-Organic Supramolecular Cage with Dendritic Carbazole Arms

In recent years, incredible endeavors have been devoted to the design and self-assembly of discrete metal-organic cages (MOCs) with expanding intricacy and functionality. The controlled synthesis of metal-organic supramolecular cages with large branched chains remains an interesting and challenging work in supramolecular chemistry. Herein, a tetrahedral metal-organic supramolecular cage (ZnII4L4) containing 12 dendritic carbazole arms is unprecedentedly constructed through coordination-driven subcomponent self-assembly and characterized in different ways. Interestingly, tetrahedral supramolecular Cage-1 exhibited the potential for aggregation-induced emission (AIE) performance and stimulus-responsive luminescence features, and it achieved color-tunable photoluminescence due to the introduction of dendritic carbazole arms. Crucially, owing to the great photophysical properties of Cage-1 in solution, Cage-1 was enabled to act as a fluorescent ink for the vapor-responsive recording and wiping of information.

Stereochemical dominance in hierarchically formed helicates

The competition of different chiral ligands in the control of stereochemistry of hierarchically formed helical coordination compounds is investigated. It is found that sterically demanding chiral units can dominate the chiral induction of the helix even if they are present as a minor species. Hereby the relative strength of stereoinduction of different chiral units can be evaluated.

Competition of Hydrogen Bonds and Coordinate Bonds Induces a Reversible Crystal Transformation

Achieving reversible molecular crystal transformation between coordinate aggregates and hydrogen bonded assemblies has been a challenging task because coordinate bonds are generally much stronger than hydrogen bonds. Recently, we have reported the incorporation of silver ions into the cyanuric acid-melamine (CAM) network, resulting in the formation of a 1D coordination polymer (crystal 1) through forming the κ₁N-Ag-κ₂N coordination bonds. In this work, we find crystal 1 will undergo reversible transformation to hydrogen bonded coordinate units (crystal 2) through the breaking of coordinate chains and then the addition of CAM hydrogen bonding motifs into the framework. Crystal 2 presents a pseudohexagonal arrangement comprised of the κ₁N-Ag-κ₂N units connected by two sets of the triple hydrogen bonds, which extends two-dimensionally and stacks into a layer-structured crystal. Light was shed on the tautomerization of CA and M ligands associated with the crystal transformations using single crystal X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy by analyzing the bond lengths and vibrations. We also highlight that photoluminescence can be a useful tool to probe the tautomer conversions of conjugated molecules. Furthermore, crystal 1 demonstrates high flexibility and can be bent over 180° and recover to its original shape after stress release. Crystal 2, on the contrary, is brittle and shows distinct mechanical anisotropy along different crystal orientations, as unveiled by nanoindentation measurements. The elastic modulus is well correlated with the chemical bonding strength along each orientation, and it is noteworthy that the contribution of the triple hydrogen bonds is comparable to that of the coordination bonds.

Controlling the Complexity and Interconversion Mechanisms in Self-Assembled [Fe2 L3 ]4+ Helicates and [Fe4 L6 ]8+ Cages

Self-assembled coordination cages and metal-organic frameworks have relied extensively on symmetric ligands in their formation. Here we have prepared a relatively simple system employing an unsymmetric ligand that results in two distinct self-assembled structures, a [Fe₂ L₃ ]⁴⁺ helicate and a [Fe₄ L₆ ]⁸⁺ cage composed of 10 interconverting diastereomers and their enantiomers. We show that the steric profile of the ligand controls the complexity, thermodynamics and kinetics of interconversion of the system.

Photo-Controlled Macroscopic Self-Assembly Based on Photo-Switchable Hetero-Complementary Quadruple Hydrogen Bonds

A photo-switchable hetero-complementary quadruple H-bonding array, which consists of an azobenzene-derived ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) module (Azo-UPy) and a nonphotoactive diamidonaphthyridine (DAN) derivative (Napy-1), is constructed based on a reversible photo-locking approach. Upon UV (390 nm)/Vis (460 nm) light irradiations, photo-switchable quadruple H-bonded dimerization between Azo-UPy and Napy-1 can be achieved with exhibiting 4.8×10⁴ -fold differences in binding strength (ON/OFF ratios). Furthermore, smart polymeric gels with unique photo-controlled macroscopic self-assembly behavior can be fabricated by introducing such quadruple H-bonding array as photo-regulable noncovalent interfacial connections.

Hydrogen Bonding Directed Self-Assembly of a Binuclear Ag(I) Metallacycle into a 1D Supramolecular Polymer

An Ag(I) metallacycle obtained unexpectedly during the preparation of Pd(II) complexes of the bifunctional ligand 5-([2,2′-bipyridin]-5-yl)pyrimidine-2-amine (L) has been characterized using X-ray structure determination as a binuclear, metallacyclic species [Ag₂L₂](SbF₆)₂, where both the bipyridine and pyrimidine-N donors of L are involved in coordination to the metal. The full coordination environment of the Ag(I) defines a case of highly irregular 4-coordination. In the crystal, the Ag-metallacycles assemble into one-dimensional supramolecular metalladynamers linked together by hydrogen-bonding interactions.

Hollow and highly diastereoselective face-rotating polyhedra constructed through rationally engineered facial units

Molecular face-rotating polyhedra (FRP) exhibit complex stereochemistry, rendering it challenging to manipulate their assembly in a stereoselective manner. In our previous work, stereocontrolled FRP were gained at the cost of losing the confined inner space, which hampers their host–guest interactions and potential applications. Through a rational design approach, herein we demonstrate the successful construction of hollow FRP with high diastereoselectivity. Whereas the [4 + 4] imine condensation of meta-formyl substituted C_3h-symmetric TAT-m and C₃-symmetric Tri-NH2 led to the formation of all feasible FRP-12 diastereoisomers; the para-substituted constitutional isomer, TAT-p, exclusively assembled into a pair of homo-directional enantiomeric FRP-13-CCCC/AAAA with a cavity size larger than 600 ų. Detailed structural characterizations and theoretical investigations revealed the thermodynamic landscape of FRP assembly can be effectively shaped by modulating the van der Waals repulsive forces among the facial building blocks. Our work provided a novel strategy towards stereospecific assembly of pure organic cages, opening up new opportunities for further applications of these chiral materials.

Synthesis of a chiral metallo-capsule composed of concave molecules and chirogenesis upon fullerene binding

An enantiopure molecular capsule was synthesized quantitatively using complexation of four phosphangulenes as concave molecules with four Zn²⁺ ions and applied to fullerene binding and chirogenesis. The capsule encapsulated selectively fullerene and its derivatives based on the size of cavity. The fullerene C₆₀ incorporated in the capsule exhibited induced-CD signals at the transitions of C₆₀.

A Volumetric Analysis of the 1H NMR Chemical Shielding in Supramolecular Systems

The liquid state NMR chemical shift of protons is a parameter frequently used to characterize host-guest complexes. Its theoretical counterpart, that is, the 1H NMR chemical shielding affected by the solvent (1H CS), may provide important insights into spatial arrangements of supramolecular systems, and it can also be reliably obtained for challenging cases of an aggregation of aromatic and antiaromatic molecules in solution. This computational analysis is performed for the complex of coronene and an antiaromatic model compound in acetonitrile by employing the GIAO-B3LYP-PCM approach combined with a saturated basis set. Predicted 1H CS values are used to generate volumetric data, whose properties are thoroughly investigated. The 1H CS isosurface, corresponding to a value of the proton chemical shift taken from a previous experimental study, is described. The presence of the 1H CS isosurface should be taken into account in deriving structural information about supramolecular hosts and their encapsulation of small molecules.

Stimuli-Responsive Self-Sorting Hybrid Hydrogen-Bonded/Metal-Coordinated Cage

The self-assembly of a unique molecular container is reported: a hybrid hydrogen-bonded/metal-coordinated cage where both hydrogen-bonding and metal-coordination form the crucial part of the topology. The hybrid cage was prepared combining hydrogen-bonded rosette motif and palladium(II)/platinum(II) coordination to a pyridine ligand. It was also shown that the hybrid cage could be prepared by integrative self-sorting from simple components. For the first time the genuine dual character of the hybrid cage was manifested as both self-assembling parts responded selectively to different stimuli (such as phosphine and cyanurate), which resulted in the disassembly of the cage.

Driving force balance-the "identity card" of supramolecules in a self-sorting multicomponent assembly system

Contrary to the popular belief that multicomponent assembly systems will theoretically co-assemble under the same type of driving forces, two distinct assembly modes from a system composed of two chemically similar supramolecules were demonstrated in this work. Although with exactly the same driving forces, molecule-level self-sorting unexpectedly occurred in this two-component system made of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) core-based supramolecules with one and eight lysine derivative arms. From the experiments, it was concluded that instead of driving force types, driving force counterpoise plays a vital role here, which we called "identity card hypothesis". The hypothesis suggests that two highly similar components show high affinity for the same molecules through the differentiated "identity card"-like balance of driving forces induced by the difference in the molecular spatial shape, which has never been reported before.

Glucose Binding Drives Reconfiguration of a Dynamic Library of Urea-Containing Metal-Organic Assemblies

A bis-urea-functionalized ditopic subcomponent assembled with 2-formylpyridine and Fe^II , resulting in a dynamic library of metal-organic assemblies: an irregular Fe^II ₄ L₆ structure and three Fe^II ₂ L₃ stereoisomers: left- and right-handed helicates and a meso-structure. This library reconfigured in response to the addition of monosaccharide derivatives, which served as guests for specific library members, and the rate of saccharide mutarotation was also enhanced by the library. The (P) enantiomer of the Fe^II ₂ L₃ helical structure bound β-D-glucose selectively over α-D-glucose. As a consequence, the library collapsed into the (P)-Fe^II ₂ L₃ helicate following glucose addition. The α-D-glucose was likewise transformed into the β-D-anomer during equilibration and binding. Thus, β-D-glucose and (P)-3 amplified each other in the product mixture, as metal-organic and saccharide libraries geared together into a single equilibrating system.

Guest Encapsulation within Surface-Adsorbed Self-Assembled Cages

Coordination cages encapsulate a wide variety of guests in the solution state. This ability renders them useful for applications such as catalysis and the sequestration of precious materials. A simple and general method for the immobilization of coordination cages on alumina is reported. Cage loadings are quantified via adsorption isotherms and guest displacement assays demonstrate that the adsorbed cages retain the ability to encapsulate and separate guest and non-guest molecules. Finally, a system of two cages, adsorbed on to different regions of alumina, stabilizes and separates a pair of Diels-Alder reagents. The addition of a single competitive guest results in the controlled release of the reagents, thus triggering their reaction. This method of coordination cage immobilization on solid phases is envisaged to be applicable to the extensive library of reported cages, enabling new applications based upon selective solid-phase molecular encapsulation.

Towards photoswitchable quadruple hydrogen bonds via a reversible "photolocking" strategy for photocontrolled self-assembly

Developing new photoswitchable noncovalent interaction motifs with controllable bonding affinity is crucial for the construction of photoresponsive supramolecular systems and materials. Here we describe a unique "photolocking" strategy for realizing photoswitchable control of quadruple hydrogen-bonding interactions on the basis of modifying the ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) module with an ortho-ester substituted azobenzene unit as the "photo-lock". Upon light irradiation, the obtained Azo-UPy motif is capable of unlocking/locking the partial H-bonding sites of the UPy unit, leading to photoswitching between homo- and heteroquadruple hydrogen-bonded dimers, which has been further applied for the fabrication of novel tunable hydrogen bonded supramolecular systems. This "photolocking" strategy appears to be broadly applicable in the rational design and construction of other H-bonding motifs with sufficiently photoswitchable noncovalent interactions.

Using multiple self-sorting for switching functions in discrete multicomponent systems

Over years self-sorting has developed into a powerful tool in supramolecular chemistry, for instance, to promote the error-free formation of intricate multicomponent assemblies. However, in order to use the enormous potential of self-sorting for sophisticated information processing more recent developments have focused on the reversible reconfiguration of multicomponent systems driven by multiple self-sorting protocols. The present mini review will provide an overview over the latest advancements in this field with a focus on reversibly switchable functions in discrete supramolecular systems.

Metal Coordination Guided Formation of Discrete Neutral Three-Component Hydrogen-Bonded Architectures

Interesting molecular architectures were obtained by combining heterodimeric quadruple hydrogen-bonding and neutral metal corner braces. The selection of cyclic and noncyclic aggregates from a random mixture of two-component assemblies has been achieved through metal coordination and careful adjustment of monomer rigidity and dimensions.

Dynamics of Hydrogen Bonding in Three-Component Nanorotors

The dynamics of hydrogen bonding do not only play an important role in many biochemical processes but also in Nature's multicomponent machines. Here, a three-component nanorotor is presented where both the self-assembly and rotational dynamics are guided by hydrogen bonding. In the rate-limiting step of the rotational exchange, two phenolic O-H-N,N(phenanthroline) hydrogen bonds are cleaved, a process that was followed by variable-temperature 1 H NMR spectroscopy. Activation data (ΔG≠ 298 =46.7 kJ mol-1 at 298 K, ΔH≠ =55.3 kJ mol-1 , and ΔS≠ =28.8 J mol-1  K-1 ) were determined, furnishing a rotational exchange frequency of k298 =40.0 kHz. Fully reversible disassembly/assembly of the nanorotor was achieved by addition of 5.0 equivalents of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA)/1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) over three cycles.

Redox-Responsive H-Bonding: Amplifying the Effect of Electron Transfer Using Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer

A new strategy to create highly redox-responsive H-bond dimers based on proton-coupled electron transfer is proposed that capitalizes on the importance of secondary H-bonds in determining overall binding strength in H-bond dimers. Electron transfer induced proton transfer across a H-bond can be used to significantly strengthen the overall binding by both creating strong ionic H-bonds and changing the secondary H-bonds from unfavorable to favorable. The viability and potency of this approach are demonstrated with an electroactive DAD (A = H-acceptor, D = H-donor) array, H(MQ⁺)H, paired with an electroinactive ADA array, O(NH)O. NMR titration of H(MQ⁺)H with O(NH)O in 0.1 M NBu₄PF₆/CD₂Cl₂ gives a K_assoc of 500 M^-1, typical of DAD-ADA dimers. However, upon two-electron reduction in 0.1 M NBu₄PF₆/CH₂Cl₂, cyclic voltammetry studies indicate a 1.8 × 10⁵ increase in binding strength, corresponding to a very large K_assoc of 9 × 10⁷ M^-1. The latter value is typical of DDD-AAA H-bond dimers, consistent with proton transfer across the central H-bond upon reduction.

Coordination-Assembled Water-Soluble Anionic Lanthanide Organic Polyhedra for Luminescent Labeling and Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Lanthanide-containing functional complexes have found a variety of applications in materials science and biomedicine because of their unique electroptical and magnetic properties. However, the poor stability and solubility in water of multicomponent lanthanide organic assemblies significantly limit their practical applications. We report here a series of water-stable anionic Ln_2nL_3n-type (n = 2, 3, 4, and 5) lanthanide organic polyhedra (LOPs) constructed by deprotonation self-assembly of three fully conjugated ligands (H₄L¹ and H₄L^2a/b) featuring a 2,6-pyridine bitetrazolate chelating moiety. The outcomes of the LOPs formation reactions were found to be very sensitive toward the reaction conditions including base, metal source, solvents, and concentrations as characterized by a combination of NMR, high-resolution ESI-MS and X-ray crystallography. Ligands H₄L^2a/b manifested an excellent sensitization toward lanthanide ions (Ln = Eu^III and Tb^III), with high luminescent quantum yields for Tb₈L^2a₁₂ (Φ = 11.2% in water) and Eu₈L^2b₁₂ (Φ = 76.8% in DMSO) measured in polar solvents. Furthermore, due to the giant molecular weight and rigidity of the polyhedral skeleton, Gd₈L^2b₁₂ showed a very high longitudinal relaxivity (r₁) of 400.53 mM^-1S^-1. The performance of Gd₈L^2b₁₂ as potential magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents (CAs) in vivo was evaluated with much longer retention time in the tumor sites compared with the commercial Gd^III-based CAs. Dual-modal imaging potential has also been demonstrated with the mixed Eu/Gd LOPs. Our results not only provide a new design route toward water-stable multinuclear lanthanide organic assemblies but also offer potential candidates of supramolecular-edifices for bioimaging and drug delivery.

Oxidation triggers guest dissociation during reorganization of an FeII 4L6 twisted parallelogram

A three-dimensional FeII 4L6 parallelogram was prepared from ferrocene-containing ditopic ligands. The steric preference of the bulky ferrocene cores towards meridional vertex coordination brought about this new structure type, in which the ferrocene units adopt three distinct conformations. The structure possesses two distinct, bowl-like cavities that host anionic guests. Oxidation of the ferrocene FeII to ferrocenium FeIII causes rotation of the ferrocene hinges, converting the structure to an FeII 1L1 + species with release of anionic guests, even though the average charge per iron increases in a way that would ordinarily increase guest binding strength. The degrees of freedom exhibited by these new structures - derived from the different configurations of the three ligands surrounding a meridional FeII center and the rotation of ferrocene cores - thus underpin their ability to reconfigure and eject guests upon oxidation.

The Covalent and Coordination Co-Driven Assembly of Supramolecular Octahedral Cages with Controllable Degree of Distortion

Discovering and constructing novel and fancy structures is the goal of many supramolecular chemists. In this work, we propose an assembly strategy based on the synergistic effect of coordination and covalent interactions to construct a set of octahedral supramolecular cages and adjust their degree of distortion. Our strategy innovatively utilizes the addition of sulfur atoms of a metal sulfide synthon, [Et₄N][Tp*WS₃] (A), to an alkynyl group of a pyridine-containing linker, resulting in a novel vertex with low symmetry, and of Cu(I) ions. By adjusting the length of the linker and the position of the reactive alkynyl group, the control of the deformation degree of the octahedral cages can be realized. These supramolecular cages exhibit enhanced third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) responses. The results offer a powerful strategy to construct novel distorted cage structures as well as control the degree of distortion of supramolecular geometries.

Combining Coordination and Hydrogen Bonds to Develop Discrete Supramolecular Metalla-Assemblies

In Nature, metal ions play critical roles at different levels, and they are often found in proteins. Therefore, metal ions are naturally incorporated in hydrogen-bonded systems. In addition, the combination of metal coordination and hydrogen bonds have been used extensively to develop supramolecular materials. However, despite this win-win combination between coordination and hydrogen bonds in many supramolecular systems, the same combination remains scarce in the field of coordination-driven self-assemblies. Indeed, as illustrated in this mini-review, only a few discrete supramolecular metalla-assemblies combining coordination and hydrogen bonds can be found in the literature, but that figure might change rapidly.

Reversible hydrogen-bonded polymerization regulated by allosteric metal templation

A stable quadruple hydrogen bonded cyclic dimer assisted by metal templation was successfully self-assembled and its reversible transformation to supramolecular polymer was investigated.
