Abstract
Hypervalent iodine(iii) compounds of the general structure ArIL2 are widely used as oxidizing agents for a variety of applications across both organic and inorganic chemistry. Considerable work has been done on the activation of these compounds by tuning the ligands at the iodine centre. This perspective summarises the work of our and other groups on rectification of historically misidentified iodine(iii) reagents of this class, and the syntheses of activated species. Recent advances focusing on increasing the oxidative capacity of I(iii) moieties using Lewis and Brønsted acids and Lewis bases as well as the activation of halogens with I(iii) are discussed.

Abstract
The recently discovered I(III) reagent NO2-C6H4-I(OTf)2 is found to rapidly react with hydride sources, including HSiEt3 and relatively hydridic C-H precursors. These represent the first distinct reactions involving direct hydride abstraction by I(III) under ambient conditions. Direct C-F abstraction is also demonstrated, as well as oxidation of cyclic alkenes to aromatic rings, all representing new reactions for I(III) demonstrating the very high reactivity of NO2-C6H4-I(OTf)2.

Abstract
Synthesis and crystallographic characterization of NO2-C6H4-I(NTf2)2 (NTf2 = bistriflimide) is reported. Experimental results find that this compound can perform oxidation reactions that ArI(OTf)2 is unable to and theoretical analysis indicates Ar-I(NTf2)2 is the most oxidizing in the ArIL2 class of compounds known and may also be the most oxidizing compound in the class practically possible.

Abstract
The structure of Stang's reagent [PhI(CN)][OTf] is confirmed by X-ray crystallography and is determined to be best described as an ion-pair in organic solution. It is found to be a strong Lewis acid, but reaction with pyridine ligands gives [Pyr-CN][OTf] salts via oxidation of pyridine giving a new derivative of the CDAP reagent widely used as an activation agent for polysaccharides.

Abstract
PhI(OTf)2 and related ArI(OTf)2 species have been incorrectly invoked as intermediates in oxidation reactions for many years. We recently established that such compounds did not yet exist but remain an attractive target. Here we describe the synthesis, isolation, and structural characterization of NO2 -PhI(OTf)2, which is resistant to decomposition and more reactive than PhI(OTf)(OAc), the species previously misidentified as PhI(OTf)2 .

Abstract
ConspectusSince Ludwig Claisen's discovery of the sigmatropic rearrangement of allyl aryl ethers in 1912, aromatic Claisen rearrangement has continuously attracted the attention of both experimental and theoretical chemists. Over more than a century of growth, this protocol has proven to be a practical and powerful synthetic tool in many aspects. However, the reaction scope has long been limited to aryl ethers and their S or N analogs until the serendipitous discovery of aromatic iodonium-Claisen rearrangement by Oh et al. in 1988 and the development of aromatic sulfonium-Claisen rearrangement by Kita et al. in 2004. Unlike traditional Claisen rearrangements, these hypervalent-bonding-based Claisen-type rearrangements can be performed by simply mixing electrophilically activated aryl sulfoxides/iodanes with certain nucleophiles to directly deliver rearrangement products. In addition to the simple operation, remarkable features, such as readily available substrates, valuable products and intriguing rearrangement patterns, have led to a dramatic resurgence of this rearrangement chemistry. In this Account, we summarize our recent works on developing new aromatic rearrangement modes using sulfonium/iodonium reagents. Interestingly, the program started with an accidental discovery that aryl sulfoxides could be coupled with alkyl nitriles in the presence of Tf2O and base. Mechanistic studies reveal that the reaction proceeds in three major steps, including the Tf2O-triggered assembly of both coupling partners, base-promoted deprotonation of in situ-generated aryl sulfonium-imine species leading to a key rearrangement precursor called aryl sulfonium-ketenimine species, and subsequent facile and rapid [3,3]-rearrangement. On the basis of the mechanistic underpinning, we divided the one-step operation into two steps called the "assembly/deprotonation" protocol for constructing unstable rearrangement precursors. Most notably, the switch from the commonly used one-step to mechanism-based multiple-step manipulation, which can be termed "breaking up the whole into parts", not only enables the independent control of each step of the reaction, thus significantly expanding the accessible synthetic scope, but also raises opportunities for developing new rearrangement patterns. For example, the "assembly/deprotonation" protocol has also been applied to the development of [5,5]-rearrangement of aryl sulfoxides and the asymmetric rearrangement of aryl iodanes, thus enabling the unprecedented regio- and stereocontrol of the rearrangement process. Furthermore, the "breaking up the whole into parts" thinking triggered us to merge the Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) reaction into the rearrangement process to accomplish Z-selective MBH-type [3,3]-rearrangement of α,β-unsaturated nitriles and E-selective MBH-type [3,3]-rearrangement of α,β-unsaturated 2-oxazolines, which expands the scope of rearrangement partners to include α,β-unsaturated carbonyls. In addition, the impressive rapidity of the rearrangement process found in our initial discovery has also been recognized as a congestion-acceleration effect, which was further utilized to forge the rapid ortho-cyanoalkylative rearrangement of aryl iodanes, and thus leading to the first dearomatization of aryl iodanes. We anticipate that our protocols and ideas behind the methods will be complementary to the traditional thinking of the aromatic Claisen rearrangement.

Abstract
Utilizing the easily available isatin-based propargyl amines prepared from isatins, terminal alkynes, and anilines, (2-(quinolin-2-yl)phenyl)carbamates were prepared by a one-pot reaction in sequence, combining the gold-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts cyclization, oxidative umpolung aza-Grob fragmentation, and nucleophilic addition. In this process, gold-catalyzed cyclization of isatin-based propargyl amines gave 1'H-spiro[indoline-3,2'-quinolin]-2-ones, which were oxidized in situ by hypervalent iodine via the aza-Grob fragmentation to afford isocyano intermediates 2-(2-isocyanatophenyl)quinolines. Followed by the nucleophilic addition with alcohol solvents, (2-(quinolin-2-yl)phenyl)carbamates were synthesized. This procedure features easy operation, a wide substrate scope, and mild conditions.

Abstract
The α-umpolung of carbonyl compounds significantly expands the boundaries of traditional carbonyl chemistry. Despite various umpolung methods available today, reversing the inherent reactivity of carbonyls still remains a substantial challenge. In this article, we report the first use of sulfonium salts, in lieu of well-established hypervalent iodines, for the carbonyl umpolung event. The protocol enables the incorporation of a wide variety of heteroatom nucleophiles into the α-carbon of 2-oxazolines. The success of this investigation hinges on the following factors: (1) the use of sulfoxides, which are abundant, structurally diverse and tunable, and easily accessible, ensures the identification of a superior oxidant namely phenoxathiin sulfoxide for the umpolung reaction; (2) the "assembly/deprotonation" protocol previously developed for rearrangement reactions in our laboratory was successfully applied here for the construction of α-umpoled 2-oxazolines.

Abstract
Reported herein is an in situ-generated hypervalent iodine-incorporating fluoroarylation of benzylidenecyclopropanes using commercially available HF·Py and aryl iodides as fluorine and aryl sources, respectively. The reaction proceeds via regioselective 1,2-fluoroiodination of a double bond followed by an iodonio-[3,3]-rearrangement of the formed cyclopropyl-I(III) species. The protocol offers facile access to valuable monofluorinated 1,1-bis-benzyl-alkenes with mild reaction conditions and moderate to good yields. The synthetic utility of the products was demonstrated by further transformations. Preliminary mechanistic studies were conducted.

Abstract
An efficient PhIO-mediated oxidative C═C bond cleavage and reassembly of enaminone toward oxazolone with high regioselectivity has been reported. DFT calculations revealed that the reaction proceeded through an oxygen atom transfer, C═C bond cleavage, alkylthio migration, and reassembly cascade. This strategy is highlighted by high atom and step economy with formation of five bonds in one pot and generation of a high-valued oxazolone skeleton under mild conditions.

Abstract
A comprehensive mechanistic investigation was conducted on the coupling reaction of aryl sulfoxides with phenols by using trifluoroacetic anhydride to yield biaryls. NMR experiments revealed that our previously proposed mechanism, which consists of a cascade of an interrupted Pummerer reaction and a rate-determining [3,3] sigmatropic rearrangement, is reasonable. The electronic effects of the substrates were also evaluated to elucidate the nature of the rearrangement step. Based on experimental observations and theoretical calculations, we conclude that the rearrangement is highly asynchronous and stepwise rather than concerted when electron-rich phenols are employed for the reaction.

Abstract
A series of alkoxylated isobenzofuranones were conveniently synthesized from the reaction of 2-(1-arylvinyl)benzoic acids with PhI(OR)2, generated in situ from the reaction of iodosobenzene (PhIO) with alkyl alcohols. This hypervalent iodine mediated one-pot transformation is postulated to undergo a cascade reaction involving lactonization, 1,2-aryl migration and alkoxylation processes. The organocatalytic and chiral organoiodine-catalyzed asymmetric reactions of the current transformation were also probed.

Abstract
Iodine(III)-mediated synthesis of 4-iodo-N-phenylaniline from iodobenzene has been achieved, and the reaction can proceed under mild conditions. A variety of functional groups were well tolerated, providing the corresponding products in moderate to good yields. The remaining iodine group provides an effective platform for converting the products into several valuable asymmetric diphenylamines. Most importantly, this reaction can be easily scaled up to the ten-gram scale, highlighting its synthetic utility. The mechanistic study revealed that the in situ generated aryl hypervalent iodine intermediate is the key factor to realize this para-selective C-H amination reaction.

Abstract
α-aryl α,β-unsaturated carbonyls represent an important class of derivatizable synthetic intermediates, however, the synthesis of such compounds still remains a challenge. Recently, we showcased a novel Z-selective α-arylation of α,β-unsaturated nitriles with aryl sulfoxides via [3,3]-rearrangement involving an Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) process. Herein, we demonstrate the feasibility of reversing the stereoselectivity of such MBH-type [3,3]-rearrangement by switching to a new pair of rearrangement partners consisting of aryl iodanes and α,β-unsaturated oxazolines. As a result, the two protocols complement each other in approaching E- or Z-α-aryl α,β-unsaturated carbonyl derivatives. Mechanistic studies reveal a possible reaction pathway and provide an explanation for the opposite stereoselectivities.

Characterising Supramolecular Architectures in Crystals Featuring I⋯Br Halogen Bonding: Persistence of X⋯X’ Secondary-Bonding in Their Congeners. CRYSTALS 2021. Abstract
The Cambridge Structural Database was surveyed for crystals featuring I⋯Br secondary-bonding in their supramolecular assemblies occurring independently of other obvious supramolecular synthons and devoid of other halogen bonding interactions. In all, 41 crystals satisfied these criteria, with nine examples of zero-dimensional aggregation (uniformly two-molecule aggregates) and 30 one-dimensional chains of varying topology (linear, zigzag and helical). There is one example each of two- and three-dimensional patterns. Type-I, type-II and intermediate bonding situations are apparent; for type-II bonding, the ratio of iodide:bromide functioning as the electrophile is 2:1. Most molecules participated, on average, in one I⋯Br contact, although smaller numbers of half (zero-dimensional) or two contacts (two- and three-dimensional) were observed. The propensity of the formation of related halogen bonding interactions in congeners of the 41 investigated crystals was also studied. Congeners were apparent for 11 crystals, with seven of these exhibiting isostructural relationships, in terms of space-group symmetry and unit-cell parameters. Isostructural relationships do not ensure the formation of analogous aggregation patterns, particularly and in accord with expectation, for the lighter halides. When formed, often distinct aggregation patterns are observed despite the isostructural relationships. Hetero-atomic halogen bonding offers surprises and opportunities in crystal engineering endeavours.

Abstract
A benzene-free synthesis of multisubstituted catechol via an oxidative dearomatic reorganization is reported. This reaction tolerated a wide spectrum of functionalities, which could be applied in the synthesis of an electron-deficient arene-conjugated catechol that is difficult to access via biomimetic oxidative coupling. In addition, a diversification-oriented transformation that leveraged the versatile catechol afforded a series of functionality-rich products.

Abstract
PhI(OTf)2 has been used for the past 30 years as a strong I(III) oxidant for organic and inorganic transformations. It has been reported to be generated in situ from the reactions of either PhI(OAc)2 or PhI=O with two equivalents of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMS-OTf). In this report it is shown that neither of these reactions generate a solution with spectroscopic data consistent with PhI(OTf)2 , with supporting theoretical calculations, and thus this compound should not be invoked as the species acting as the oxidant for transformations that have been associated with its use.
