Twofold π-Extension of Polyarenes via Double and Triple Radical Alkyne peri-Annulations: Radical Cascades Converging on the Same Aromatic Core

Recent Advances in Synthetic Methods by Photocatalytic Single-Electron Transfer Chemistry of Pyridine N-Oxides

By adoption of the enabling technology of modern photoredox catalysis and photochemistry, the generation of reactive and versatile pyridine N-oxy radicals can be facilely achieved from single-electron oxidation of pyridine N-oxides. This Synopsis highlights recent methodologies mediated by pyridine N-oxy radicals in developing (1) pyridine N-oxide-based hydrogen atom transfer catalysts for C(sp3)-H functionalizations and (2) β-oxyvinyl radical-mediated cascade reactions. In addition, recent research revealed that direct photoexcitation of pyridine N-oxides allowed for the generation of alkyl carbon radicals from alkylboronic acids.

Tethering Three Radical Cascades for Controlled Termination of Radical Alkyne peri-Annulations: Making Phenalenyl Ketones without Oxidants

Although Bu3Sn-mediated radical alkyne peri-annulations allow access to phenalenyl ring systems, the oxidative termination of these cascades provides only a limited selection of the possible isomeric phenalenone products with product selectivity controlled by the intrinsic properties of the new cyclic systems. In this work, we report an oxidant-free termination strategy that can overcome this limitation and enable selective access to the full set of isomerically functionalized phenalenones. The key to preferential termination is the preinstallation of a "weak link" that undergoes C-O fragmentation in the final cascade step. Breaking a C-O bond is assisted by entropy, gain of conjugation in the product, and release of stabilized radical fragments. This strategy is expanded to radical exo-dig cyclization cascades of oligoalkynes, which provide access to isomeric π-extended phenalenones. Conveniently, these cascades introduce functionalities (i.e., Bu3Sn and iodide moieties) amenable to further cross-coupling reactions. Consequently, a variety of polyaromatic diones, which could serve as phenalenyl-based open-shell precursors, can be synthesized.

Design and Synthesis of Kekulè and Non-Kekulè Diradicaloids via the Radical Periannulation Strategy: The Power of Seven Clar's Sextets

This work introduces an approach to uncoupling electrons via maximum utilization of localized aromatic units, i.e., the Clar's π-sextets. To illustrate the utility of this concept to the design of Kekulé diradicaloids, we have synthesized a tridecacyclic polyaromatic system where a gain of five Clar's sextets in the open-shell form overcomes electron pairing and leads to the emergence of a high degree of diradical character. According to unrestricted symmetry-broken UCAM-B3LYP calculations, the singlet diradical character in this core system is characterized by the y₀ value of 0.98 (y₀ = 0 for a closed-shell molecule, y₀ = 1 for pure diradical). The efficiency of the new design strategy was evaluated by comparing the Kekulé system with an isomeric non-Kekulé diradical of identical size, i.e., a system where the radical centers cannot couple via resonance. The calculated singlet-triplet gap, i.e., the ΔE_ST values, in both of these systems approaches zero: -0.3 kcal/mol for the Kekulé and +0.2 kcal/mol for the non-Kekulé diradicaloids. The target isomeric Kekulé and non-Kekulé systems were assembled using a sequence of radical periannulations, cross-coupling, and C-H activation. The diradicals are kinetically stabilized by six tert-butyl substituents and (triisopropylsilyl)acetylene groups. Both molecules are NMR-inactive but electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)-active at room temperature. Cyclic voltammetry revealed quasi-reversible oxidation and reduction processes, consistent with the presence of two nearly degenerate partially occupied molecular orbitals. The experimentally measured ΔE_ST value of -0.14 kcal/mol confirms that K is, indeed, a nearly perfect singlet diradical.

Tandem Electro-Oxidative C-C and C-N Coupling and Aromatization for the Construction of Pyrazine-Fused Bis-aza[7]helicene

Repeated tandem electro-oxidative C-C and C-N coupling and aromatization were employed for the efficient construction of aza[7]helicene (BA7) as a key intermediate and the targeted pyrazine-fused bis-aza[7]helicene (PBBA7) derivatives in 90.0-93.2% isolated yields under a controlled potential. The electrosynthetic protocol showed high selectivity and enabled rapid access to functionalized organic conjugated materials from readily available polycyclic aromatic amines. A synthetic mechanistic study along with an investigation of the photoelectrical properties and application of PBBA7-C16 as a potential hole-transporting material for perovskite solar cells were performed.

anti-Selective Borylstannylation of Alkynes with (o-Phenylenediaminato)borylstannanes by a Radical Mechanism

We have achieved the first anti-borylstannylation of alkynes by using (o-phenylenediaminato)borylstannanes. This reaction afforded 1-boryl-2-stannylalkenes with excellent regio- and stereoselectivity by a radical mechanism. This anti-addition manner is in sharp contrast to the syn-selectivity obtained during transition metal-catalyzed borylstannylation. The mild radical conditions enabled a broad substrate scope, and various types of aromatic and aliphatic alkynes were applicable. The origin of regio- and stereoselectivity was elucidated by DFT calculation of the reaction mechanism. The application of the borylstannylation products to cross- or homocoupling reactions provided ready access to either triarylethenes or bisborylbutadienes.

Acenaphthenoannulation Induced by the Dual Lewis Acidity of Alumina

We have discovered a dual (i. e., soft and hard) Lewis acidity of alumina that enables rapid one‐pot π‐extension through the activation of terminal alkynes followed by C−F activation. The tandem reaction introduces an acenaphthene fragment – an essential moiety of geodesic polyarenes. This reaction provides quick access to elusive non‐alternant polyarenes such as π‐extended buckybowls and helicenes through three‐point annulation of the 1‐(2‐ethynyl‐6‐fluorophenyl)naphthalene moiety. The versatility of the developed method was demonstrated by the synthesis of unprecedented structural fragments of elusive geodesic graphene nanoribbons.

Synthesis of a Bent, Twisted, and Chiral Phenanthrene via an Iodine Monochloride-Mediated, Strain-Inducing π-Extension Reaction

A strategy for the synthesis of substituted and strained p-phenylene units is reported. An oxidative allylic alcohol rearrangement, followed by organometallic addition to the resulting α-ketol and subsequent dehydrative aromatization, affords p-terphenyl-containing macrocycles in which the central p-phenylene has been selectively substituted. Ten 18-membered macrocycles have been synthesized, eight of which contain substituents that could enable π-extension. Only alkynylated derivatives were amenable to π-extension via an ICl-mediated reaction, affording a highly bent, twisted, and chiral phenanthrene.

Domino Dehydrative π-Extension: A Facile Path to Extended Perylenes and Terrylenes

Herein, we report a new method for synthesis of extended perylenes and terrylenes. The technique is based on the cascade dehydrative π‐extensions (DPEX) of aryl aldehydes, in which stepwise annulations activate previously “dormant” substituents. Two‐ and fourfold cyclizations of 3‐aryl‐biphenyl‐2,2′‐dicarbaldehydes offer a rapid path to unsymmetrical perylenes and elusive terrylene derivatives, respectively. DPEX of 3,3′′‐(phenanthrene‐1,8‐diyl)bis (([1,1′‐biphenyl]‐2,2′‐dicarbaldehyde)) leads to the biradical structure, which proceeds in situ into oxidative electrocyclization at room temperature. The described domino process complements and expands DPEX approach to a large family of fused acenes and related PAHs.

Synthesis of gem-Dimethylcyclopentane-Fused Arenes with Various Topologies via TBD-Mediated Dehydro-Diels-Alder Reaction

The development of efficient methods for the synthesis of substituted polycyclic arenes with various topologies is in high demand due to their excellent electrical and optical properties. In this work, a series of gem-dimethylcyclopentane-fused arenes with more than ten topologies were synthesized via a 1,5,7-Triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD)-mediated dehydro-Diels-Alder reaction with moderate to good yields. The introduction of the near-planar gem-dimethylcyclopentane moiety not only impacts the molecular conjugative system but also regulates the intermolecular π-π interactions and crystal packing, which are critical for the photoelectric performance of arenes. The photophysical properties, molecular geometry, molecular packing of these compounds, and electrochemical properties were investigated by UV-vis absorption, fluorescence emission spectra, DFT calculations, single-crystal X-ray structure analysis, and cyclic voltammetry study.

Cascade Transformations of 1-R-Ethynyl-9,10-anthraquinones with Amidines: Expanding Access to Isoaporphinoid Alkaloids

The interaction of acetamidine and phenylamidine with peri-R-ethynyl-9,10-anthraquinones in refluxing n-butanol leads to the formation of cascade transformations products: addition/elimination/cyclization-2-R-7H-dibenzo[de,h]quinolin-7-ones and(or) 2-R-3-aroyl-7H-dibenzo[de,h]quinolin-7-ones. The anti-inflammatory and antitumor properties of the new 2-R-7H-dibenzo[de,h]quinolin-7-ones were investigated in vivo, in vitro, and in silico. The synthesized compounds exhibit high anti-inflammatory activity at dose 20 mg/kg (intraperitoneal injection) in the models of exudative (histamine-induced) and immunogenic (concanavalin A-induced) inflammation. Molecular docking data demonstrate that quinolinones can potentially intercalate into DNA similarly to the antitumor drug doxorubicin.

Cycloaddition Cascades of Strained Alkynes and Oxadiazinones

We report a computational and experimental study of the reaction of oxadiazinones and strained alkynes to give polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The reaction proceeds by way of a pericyclic reaction cascade and leads to the formation of four new carbon-carbon bonds. Using M06-2X DFT calculations, we interrogate several mechanistic aspects of the reaction, such as why the use of non-aromatic strained alkynes can be used to access unsymmetrical PAHs, whereas the use of arynes in the methodology leads to symmetrical PAHs. In addition, experimental studies enable the rapid synthesis of new PAHs, including tetracene and pentacene scaffolds. These studies not only provide fundamental insight regarding the aforementioned cycloaddition cascades and synthetic access to PAH scaffolds, but are also expected to enable the synthesis of new materials.

EPR evidence for α-triphenylstannylvinyl radicals in the O-directed hydrostannation of dialkylacetylenes with Ph3SnH/cat. Et3B/O2

Here we provide definitive EPR evidence for the existence of α-triphenylstannylvinyl radicals in the low temperature O-directed free radical hydrostannation of dialkyl propargylic alcohols with Ph3SnH/cat. Et3B and O2 in PhMe. Isotropic hyperfine splitting patterns and spectral simulations confirm the assignments made. In the case of the α-triphenylstannylvinyl radical (Z)-2, an isotopic 119/117Sn hyperfine coupling constant of 9.5 mT (95 G) was measured along with a 1Hβ hyperfine coupling constant of 1.1 mT.

Computational Design of Radical Recognition Assay with the Possible Application of Cyclopropyl Vinyl Sulfides as Tunable Sensors

The processes involving the capture of free radicals were explored by performing DFT molecular dynamics simulations and modeling of reaction energy profiles. We describe the idea of a radical recognition assay, where not only the presence of a radical but also the nature/reactivity of a radical may be assessed. The idea is to utilize a set of radical-sensitive molecules as tunable sensors, followed by insight into the studied radical species based on the observed reactivity/selectivity. We utilize this approach for selective recognition of common radicals-alkyl, phenyl, and iodine. By matching quantum chemical calculations with experimental data, we show that components of a system react differently with the studied radicals. Possible radical generation processes were studied involving model reactions under UV light and metal-catalyzed conditions.

"Broken-hearted" carbon bowl via electron shuttle reaction: energetics and electron coupling

Unprecedented one-step C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond cleavage leading to opening of the buckybowl (π-bowl), that could provide access to carbon-rich structures with previously inaccessible topologies, is reported; highlighting the possibility to implement drastically different synthetic routes to π-bowls in contrast to conventional ones applied for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Through theoretical modeling, we evaluated the mechanistic pathways feasible for π-bowl planarization and factors that could affect such a transformation including strain and released energies. Through employment of Marcus theory, optical spectroscopy, and crystallographic analysis, we estimated the possibility of charge transfer and electron coupling between "open" corannulene and a strong electron acceptor such as 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane. Alternative to a one-pot solid-state corannulene "unzipping" route, we reported a nine-step solution-based approach for preparation of novel planar "open" corannulene-based derivatives in which electronic structures and photophysical profiles were estimated through the energies and isosurfaces of the frontier natural transition orbitals.

Generation of Alkyl Radicals: From the Tyranny of Tin to the Photon Democracy

Alkyl radicals are key intermediates in organic synthesis. Their classic generation from alkyl halides has a severe drawback due to the employment of toxic tin hydrides to the point that "flight from the tyranny of tin" in radical processes was considered for a long time an unavoidable issue. This review summarizes the main alternative approaches for the generation of unstabilized alkyl radicals, using photons as traceless promoters. The recent development in photochemical and photocatalyzed processes enabled the discovery of a plethora of new alkyl radical precursors, opening the world of radical chemistry to a broader community, thus allowing a new era of photon democracy.

Phenalenannulations: Three-Point Double Annulation Reactions that Convert Benzenes into Pyrenes

3-Point annulations, or phenalenannulations, transform a benzene ring directly into a substituted pyrene by "wrapping" two new cycles around the perimeter of the central ring at three consecutive carbon atoms. This efficient, modular, and general method for π-extension opens access to non-symmetric pyrenes and their expanded analogues. Potentially, this approach can convert any aromatic ring bearing a -CH₂ Br or a -CHO group into a pyrene moiety. Depending upon the workup choices, the process can be directed towards either tin- or iodo-substituted product formation, giving complementary choices for further various cross-coupling reactions. The two-directional bis-double annulation adds two new polyaromatic extensions with a total of six new aromatic rings at a central core.

Oxidative Electrocyclization of Diradicaloids: C-C Bonds for Free or How to Use Biradical Character for π-Extension

Herein, we show that biradical character and appropriate distribution of spin density can be used for synthetic purposes. We demonstrate the rational domino annulation that includes dehydrative π-extension (DPEX) as the initiation step and subsequent oxidative electrocyclizations (EC) promoted by favorable localization of the unpaired electrons enabling up to four C-C bonds formed during the reaction. Contradicting to the Woodward-Hoffmann rules, the reaction proceeds at room temperature, whereas termination occurs when biradical character vanishes.

Self-assembly and spectroscopic fingerprints of photoactive pyrenyl tectons on hBN/Cu(111)

The controlled modification of electronic and photophysical properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by chemical functionalization, adsorption on solid supports, and supramolecular organization is the key to optimize the application of these compounds in (opto)electronic devices. Here, we present a multimethod study comprehensively characterizing a family of pyridin-4-ylethynyl-functionalized pyrene derivatives in different environments. UV-vis measurements in toluene solutions revealed absorption at wavelengths consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, while emission experiments showed a high fluorescence quantum yield. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) measurements of the pyrene derivatives adsorbed on a Cu(111)-supported hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) decoupling layer provided access to spatially and energetically resolved molecular electronic states. We demonstrate that the pyrene electronic gap is reduced with an increasing number of substituents. Furthermore, we discuss the influence of template-induced gating and supramolecular organization on the energies of distinct molecular orbitals. The selection of the number and positioning of the pyridyl termini in tetrasubstituted, trans- and cis-like-disubstituted derivatives governed the self-assembly of the pyrenyl core on the nanostructured hBN support, affording dense-packed arrays and intricate porous networks featuring a kagome lattice.
