Gold-Catalyzed Chemoselective Couplings of Polyfluoroarenes with Aryl Germanes and Downstream Diversification

Photoinduced Palladium-Catalyzed Radical Germylative Arylation of Alkenes with Chlorogermanes

We describe a visible light-induced palladium-catalyzed radical germylative arylation of alkenes with easily accessible chlorogermanes. This protocol provides expedient access to germanium-substituted indolin-2-ones in good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. The key step for this strategy lies in the reductive activation of germanium-chloride bonds with an excited palladium complex under visible light irradiation. The involvement of germanium radicals was evidenced by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy experiments.

Gold(III) Auracycles Featuring C(sp3)-Au-C(sp2) Bonds: Synthesis and Mechanistic Insights into the Cycloauration Step

The direct auration of arenes is a key step in numerous gold-catalyzed reactions. Although reported more than 100 years ago, understanding of its underlying mechanism has been hampered by the difficulties in the isolation of relevant intermediates given the propensity of gold(III) species to undergo reductive elimination. Here, we report the synthesis and isolation of a new family of intriguing zwitterionic [C(sp3)^C(sp2)]-auracyclopentanes, as well as of their alkyl-gold(III) precursors and demonstrate their value as mechanistic probes to study the C(sp2)-Au bond-forming event. Experimental investigations employing Kinetic Isotope Effects (KIE), Hammett plot, and Eyring analysis provided important insights into the formation of the auracycle. The data suggest a SEAr mechanism wherein the slowest step might be the π-coordination between the arene and the gold(III) center, en route to the Wheland intermediate. We also show that these auracyclopentanes can work as catalysts in several gold-promoted transformations.

Electrochemistry-Enabled C-Heteroatom Bond Formation of Alkyl Germanes

Because of their robustness and orthogonal reactivity features, alkyl germanes bear significant potential as functional handles for the construction of C(sp3)-rich scaffolds, especially in the context of modular synthetic approaches. However, to date, only radical-based reactivity has been accessible from these functional handles, which limits the types of possible decorations. Here, we describe the first general C(sp3)-heteroatom bond formation of alkyl germanes (-GeEt3) by leveraging electrochemistry to unlock polar reactivity. This approach allowed us to couple C(sp3)-GeEt3 with a variety of nucleophiles to construct ethers, esters, amines, amides, sulfonamides, sulfides, as well as C-P, C-F, and C-C bonds. The compatibility of the electrochemical approach with a modular synthetic strategy of a C1 motif was also showcased, involving the sequential functionalization of Cl, Bpin, and ultimately GeEt3 via electrochemistry.

Photoinduced decarboxylative germylation of α-fluoroacrylic acids: access to germylated monofluoroalkenes

Herein, a novel strategy is presented for the photoinduced decarboxylative and dehydrogenative cross-coupling of a wide range of α-fluoroacrylic acids with hydrogermanes. This methodology provides an efficient and robust approach for producing various germylated monofluoroalkenes with excellent stereoselectivity within a brief photoirradiation period. The feasibility of this reaction has been demonstrated through gram-scale reaction, conversion of germylated monofluoroalkenes, and modification of complex organic molecules.

(P^N^C) Ligands to Stabilize Gold(III): A Straightforward Access to Hydroxo, Formate, and Hydride Complexes

A novel class of (P^N^C) pincer ligands capable of stabilizing elusive gold(III) species is reported here. Straightforward access to (P^N^C)gold(III) hydroxo, formate, and hydride complexes has been streamlined by first incorporating a cycloauration step devoid of toxic metals or harsh conditions. The resulting gold complexes exhibit remarkable stability in solution as well as in the solid state under ambient conditions, which enabled their characterization by X-ray diffraction analyses. Interestingly, the influence of the ligand allowed the preparation of gold(III)-hydrides using mild hydride donors such as H-Bpin, which contrasts with sensitive super hydrides or strong acids and cryogenic conditions employed in previous protocols. A detailed bonding characterization of these species is complemented by reactivity studies.

Applications of Transition Metal-Catalyzed ortho-Fluorine-Directed C-H Functionalization of (Poly)fluoroarenes in Organic Synthesis

The synthesis of organic compounds efficiently via fewer steps but in higher yields is desirable as this reduces energy and reagent use, waste production, and thus environmental impact as well as cost. The reactivity of C-H bonds ortho to fluorine substituents in (poly)fluoroarenes with metal centers is enhanced relative to meta and para positions. Thus, direct C-H functionalization of (poly)fluoroarenes without prefunctionalization is becoming a significant area of research in organic chemistry. Novel and selective methodologies to functionalize (poly)fluorinated arenes by taking advantage of the reactivity of C-H bonds ortho to C-F bonds are continuously being developed. This review summarizes the reasons for the enhanced reactivity and the consequent developments in the synthesis of valuable (poly)fluoroarene-containing organic compounds.

Pd-Catalyzed Oxidative C-H Arylation of (Poly)fluoroarenes with Aryl Pinacol Boronates and Experimental and Theoretical Studies of its Reaction Mechanism

We report the synergistic combination of Pd(OAc)2 and Ag2O for the oxidative C-H arylation of (poly)fluoroarenes with aryl pinacol boronates (Ar-Bpin) in DMF as the solvent. This procedure can be conducted easily in air, and without using additional ligands, to afford the fluorinated unsymmetrical biaryl products in up to 98 % yield. Experimental studies suggest that the formation of [PdL2(C6F5)2] in DMF as coordinating solvent does not take place under the reaction conditions as it is stable to reductive elimination and thus would deactivate the catalyst. Thus, the intermediate [Pd(DMF)2(ArF)(Ar)] must be formed selectively to give desired arylation products. DFT calculations predict a low barrier (5.87 kcal/mol) for the concerted metalation deprotonation (CMD) process between C6F5H and the Pd(II) species formed after transmetalation between the Pd(II)X2 complex and aryl-Bpin which forms a Pd-Arrich species. Thus a Pd(Arrich)(Arpoor) complex is generated selectively which undergoes reductive elimination to generate the unsymmetrical biaryl product.

Triply Selective & Sequential Diversification at Csp 3: Expansion of Alkyl Germane Reactivity for C-C & C-Heteroatom Bond Formation

We report the triply selective and sequential diversification of a single Csp 3 carbon carrying Cl, Bpin and GeEt3 for the modular and programmable construction of sp3-rich molecules. Various functionalizations of Csp 3-Cl and Csp 3-BPin (e.g. alkylation, arylation, homologation, amination, hydroxylation) were tolerated by the Csp 3-GeEt3 group. Moreover, the methodological repertoire of alkyl germane functionalization was significantly expanded beyond the hitherto known Giese addition and arylation to alkynylation, alkenylation, cyanation, halogenation, azidation, C-S bond formation as well as the first demonstration of stereo-selective functionalization of a Csp 3-[Ge] bond.

Suppressing the Conductance of Single-Molecule Junctions Fabricated by sp2 C-H Bond Metalation

High-conducting single-molecule junctions have attracted a great deal of attention, but insulating single-molecule junctions, which are critical in molecular circuits, have been less investigated due to the long-standing challenges. Herein, the in situ formation of a Au-C linker via electrical-potential-mediated sp2 C-H bond metalation of polyfluoroarenes with the assistance of scanning tunneling microscope-based break junction technique is reported. This metalation process is bias-dependent and occurs with an electropositive electrode, and the formed junction is highly oriented. Surprisingly, these polyfluoroarenes exhibit unexpected low conductance even under short molecular lengths and are superior molecular insulators. Flicker noise analysis and DFT calculations confirm that the insulating properties of polyfluoroarenes are ascribed to their multiple fluorine substituents. Our results pave a way for constructing oriented asymmetric molecular junctions and provide an efficient strategy to suppress the single-molecule conductance, which will aid in the design of molecular insulators and advance the development of self-integrating functional molecular circuits.

Recent Developments with Organogermanes: their Preparation and Application in Synthesis and Catalysis

Within the sphere of traditional Pd0 /PdII cross coupling reactions, organogermanes have been historically outperformed both in terms of scope and reactivity by more conventional transmetalating reagents. Subsequently, this class of compounds has been largely underutilized as a coupling partner in bond-forming strategies. Most recent studies, however, have shown that alternative modes of activation of these notoriously robust building blocks transform organogermanes into the most reactive site of the molecule-capable of outcompeting other functional groups (such as boronic acids, esters and silanes) for both C-C and C-heteroatom bond formation. As a result, over the past few years, the literature has increasingly featured methodologies that explore the potential of organogermanes as chemoselective and orthogonal coupling partners. Herein we highlight some of these recent advances in the field of organogermane chemistry both with respect to their synthesis and applications in synthetic and catalytic transformations.

Mild Pd-Catalyzed Decarboxylative Cross-Coupling of Zinc(II) Polyfluorobenzoates with Aryl Bromides and Nonaflates: Access to Polyfluorinated Biaryls

We developed a Pd-catalyzed decarboxylative cross-coupling of zinc polyfluorobenzoates, which were used as precursors for producing zinc reagents in situ, with aryl bromides and nonaflates, providing a mild and efficient pathway for the synthesis of polyfluorinated biaryls. This protocol exhibits a broad substrate scope and excellent functional tolerance. Moreover, the versatility of this approach was demonstrated by the straightforward late-stage modification of drugs, biologically active molecules, and pesticides, indicating its potential significance in drug discovery.

Modular access to alkylgermanes via reductive germylative alkylation of activated olefins under nickel catalysis

Carbon-introducing difunctionalization of C-C double bonds enabled by transition-metal catalysis is one of most straightforward and efficient strategies to construct C-C and C-X bonds concurrently from readily available feedstocks towards structurally diverse molecules in one step; however, analogous difunctionalization for introducing germanium group and other functionalities remains elusive. Herein, we describe a nickel-catalyzed germylative alkylation of activated olefins with easily accessible primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl bromides and chlorogermanes as the electrophiles to form C-Ge and C-Calkyl bonds simultaneously. This method provides a modular and facile approach for the synthesis of a broad range of alkylgermanes with good functional group compatibility, and can be further applied to the late-stage modification of natural products and pharmaceuticals, as well as ligation of drug fragments. More importantly, this platform enables the expedient synthesis of germanium substituted ospemifene-Ge-OH, which shows improved properties compared to ospemifene in the treatment of breast cancer cells, demonstrating high potential of our protocol in drug development.

Dinuclear Gold-Catalyzed para-Selective C-H Arylation of Undirected Arenes by Noncovalent Interactions

The regioselectivity of C-H functionalization is commonly achieved by directing groups, electronic factors, or steric hindrance, which facilitate the identification of reaction sites. However, such strategies are less effective for reactants such as simple monofluoroarenes due to their relatively low reactivity and the modest steric demands of the fluorine atom. Herein, we present an undirected gold-catalyzed para-C-H arylation of a wide array of monofluoroarenes using air-stable aryl silanes and germanes at room temperature. A high para-regioselectivity (up to 98 : 2) can be realized by utilizing a dinuclear dppm(AuOTs)2 (dppm=bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) as the catalyst and hexafluorobenzene as the solvent. This provides a general and practical protocol for the concise construction of structurally diverse para-arylated monofluoroarenes through C-H activation manner. It features excellent functional group tolerance and a broad substrate scope (>80 examples). Besides, this strategy is also robust for other simple monosubstituted arenes and heteroarenes. Our mechanistic studies and theoretical calculations suggest that para-C-H selectivity arises from highly electrophilic and structurally flexible dinuclear Ar-Au(III)-Au(I) species, coupled with noncovalent interaction induced by hexafluorobenzene.

Orthogonal Olefination with Organogermanes

Reported herein is a fully orthogonal olefination, which involves the site- and E-selective coupling of aryl germanes with alkenes, tolerating otherwise widely employed coupling handles such as aromatic (pseudo)halogens (C-I, C-Br, C-Cl, C-F, C-OTf, C-OSO2 F), silanes and boronic acid derivatives as well as alternative functionalities. This unprecedented [Ge]-based oxidative Heck coupling proceeds at room temperature with high speed (10 min to 2 hours) and operational simplicity owing to its base-free and air-tolerant features.

Catalytic ipso-Nitration of Organosilanes Enabled by Electrophilic N-Nitrosaccharin Reagent

Nitroaromatic compounds represent one of the essential classes of molecules that are widely used as feedstock for the synthesis of intermediates, the preparation of nitro-derived pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and materials on both laboratory and industrial scales. We herein disclose the efficient, mild, and catalytic ipso-nitration of organotrimethylsilanes, enabled by an electrophilic N-nitrosaccharin reagent and allows chemoselective nitration under mild reaction conditions, while exhibiting remarkable substrate generality and functional group compatibility. Additionally, the reaction conditions proved to be orthogonal to other common functionalities, allowing programming of molecular complexity via successive transformations or late-stage nitration. Detailed mechanistic investigation by experimental and computational approaches strongly supported a classical electrophilic aromatic substitution (SE Ar) mechanism, which was found to proceed through a highly ordered transition state.

Highly selective α-hydrogermylation of alkynes catalyzed by an in situ generated bulky NHC-cobalt complex

A new catalytic system, based on an octacarbonyl dicobalt(0) complex and bulky ligand, providing a route to α-vinylgermanes is described. The proposed method can be effectively used for Markovnikov-selective hydrogermylation of a number of terminal and internal alkynes. It has been proved that analogous catalytic systems containing less sterically demanding ligands cannot serve as selective catalysts in this transformation.

Cooperative Bimetallic Catalysis via One-Metal/Two-Ligands: Mechanistic Insights of Polyfluoroarylation-Allylation of Diazo Compounds

Metal/ligand in situ assembly is crucial for tailoring the reactivity & selectivity in transition metal catalysis. Cooperative catalysis via a single metal/two ligands is still underdeveloped, since it is rather challenging to harness the distinct reactivity profiles of the species generated by self-assembly of a single metal precursor with a mixture of different ligands. Herein, we report a catalytic system composed of a single metal/two ligands for a three-component reaction of polyfluoroarene, α-diazo ester, and allylic electrophile, leading to highly efficient construction of densely functionalized quaternary carbon centers, that are otherwise hardly accessible. Mechanistic studies suggest this reaction follows a cooperative bimetallic pathway via two catalysts with distinct reactivity profiles, which are assembled in situ from a single metal precursor and two ligands and work in concert to escort the transformation.

A Hemilabile NHC-Gold Complex and its Application to the Redox Neutral 1,2-Oxyarylation of Feedstock Alkenes

We describe a AuI complex of a hemi-labile (C^N) N-heterocyclic carbene ligand that is able to mediate oxidative addition of aryl iodides. Detailed computational and experimental investigations have been undertaken to verify and rationalize the oxidative addition process. Application of this initiation mode has resulted in the first examples of "exogenous oxidant-free" AuI /AuIII catalyzed 1,2-oxyarylations of ethylene and propylene. These demanding yet powerful processes establish these commodity chemicals as nucleophilic-electrophilic building blocks in catalytic reaction design.

Enantio- and Regioconvergent Synthesis of γ-Stereogenic Vinyl Germanes and Their Use as Masked Vinyl Halides

A nickel-catalyzed enantio- and regioconvergent alkylation of regioisomeric mixtures of racemic germylated allylic electrophiles with alkyl nucleophiles is reported. Key to success is a newly developed hept-4-yl-substituted Pybox ligand that enables accessing various chiral γ-germyl α-alkyl allylic building blocks in excellent yields and enantioselectivities. The reason for the regioconvergence is the steering effect of the bulky germyl group. The resulting vinyl germanes can be easily halodegermylated without racemization of the allylic stereocenter to afford synthetically valuable γ-stereogenic vinyl halides.

cis-Selective Hydrogenation of Aryl Germanes: A Direct Approach to Access Saturated Carbo- and Heterocyclic Germanes

A catalytic approach of synthesizing the cis-selective saturated carbo- and heterocyclic germanium compounds (3D framework) is reported via the hydrogenation of readily accessible aromatic germanes (2D framework). Among the numerous catalysts tested, Nishimura's catalyst (Rh2O3/PtO2·H2O) exhibited the best hydrogenation reactivity with an isolated yield of up to 96%. A broad range of substrates including the synthesis of unprecedented saturated heterocyclic germanes was explored. This selective hydrogenation strategy could tolerate several functional groups such as -CF3, -OR, -F, -Bpin, and -SiR3 groups. The synthesized products demonstrated the applications in coupling reactions including the newly developed strategy of aza-Giese-type addition reaction (C-N bond formation) from the saturated cyclic germane product. These versatile motifs can have a substantial value in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry as they show orthogonal reactivity in coupling reactions while competing with other coupling partners such as boranes or silanes, acquiring a three-dimensional structure with high stability and robustness.

Rapid and Modular Access to Vinyl Cyclopropanes Enabled by Air-stable Palladium(I) Dimer Catalysis

While vinyl cyclopropanes are valuable functional groups in drugs or natural products as well as established precursors to trigger a rich variety of synthetic transformations, their reactive nature can make their installation via direct catalytic approaches challenging. We herein present a modular access to (di)vinyl cyclopropanes under very mild conditions and full conservation of stereochemistry, allowing access to the cis or trans cyclopropane- as well as E or Z vinyl-stereochemical relationships. Our protocol relies on air-stable dinuclear PdI catalysis, which enables rapid (<30 min) and selective access to a diverse range of vinyl cyclopropane motifs at room temperature, even on gram scale.

Pd-Catalyzed Hydroxyl-Directed Cascade Hydroarylation/C-H Germylation of Nonterminal Alkenes and Aryl Iodides

Pd-catalyzed cascade hydroarylation and C-H germylation of nonterminal alkenes and aryl iodides enabled by hydroxyl assistance have been developed. The key step in this C-H germylation cascade is the formation of a highly reactive oxo-palladacycle intermediate, which markedly restrained the β-H elimination process. Mechanistically, control experiments indicated that the hydroxyl group played an important role in this process. This transformation shows excellent reactivity and selectivity for most substrates investigated.

Modular Generation of (Iodinated) Polyarenes Using Triethylgermane as Orthogonal Masking Group

While the modular construction of molecules from suitable building blocks is a powerful means to more rapidly generate a diversity of molecules than through customized syntheses, the further evolution of the underlying coupling methodology is key to realize widespread applications. We herein disclose a complementary modular coupling approach to the widely employed Suzuki coupling strategy of boron containing precursors, which relies on organogermane containing building blocks as key orthogonal functionality and an electrophilic (rather than nucleophilic) unmasking event paired with air-stable PdI dimer based bond construction. This allows to significantly shorten the reaction times for the iterative coupling steps and/or to close gaps in the accessible compound space, enabling straightforward access also to iodinated compounds.

Pd-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling of Sb-Aryl Stibines with Halogenomethyl Arenes to Give Unsymmetirc Diarylmethanes

Herein, we describe a general method for the synthesis of unsymmetric diarylmethanes from (hetero)aryl methyl halides and Sb-aryl stibines. This protocol shows a broad substrate scope and a good functional group tolerance. Drug molecules, including beclobrate 3al and bifemelane 3as, and drug derivatives, including celecoxib 3p, ibuprofen 3ao, and probenecid 3ap, were efficiently synthesized on a gram scale. The possible mechanism is proposed on the basis of the results of control experiments.

Direct C-H Dehydrogenative Germylation of Terminal Alkynes with Hydrogermanes

A direct C(sp)-H germylation of terminal alkynes with triethyl germanium hydride is reported. The method is operationally simple and makes use of B(C₆F₅)₃ catalysis in combination with 2,6-lutidine as an organic base. Exclusive selectivity for dehydrogenative germylation of the alkyne over the competing hydrogermylation is observed.

Azolium Aurates as Pre-Catalysts for the Oxidative Coupling of Terminal Alkynes under Mild Conditions

A simple and efficient method for the oxidative coupling of terminal alkynes is reported for the first time, making use of imidazol(in)ium aurates as pre-catalysts. This approach displays high functional group tolerance and leads to a broad range of 1,3-diyne compounds in moderate to excellent yields using low catalyst loading and is performed in air under mild and sustainable conditions.

Copper-Catalyzed Three-Component Germyl Peroxidation of Alkenes

The concurrent incorporation of a germyl fragment and another functional group (beyond the hydrogen atom) across the C═C double bond is a highly appealing yet challenging task. Herein we demonstrate the efficient germyl peroxidation of alkenes with germanium hydrides and tert-butyl hydroperoxide via a copper-catalyzed three-component radical relay strategy. This protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and exquisite chemo- and regioselectivity under mild conditions and represents a rare example of constructing synthetically challenging metal-embedded organic peroxides.

Deoxygenative Cross-Coupling of Aromatic Amides with Polyfluoroarenes

Considering the ubiquitous nature and ready synthesis of amides, and the great significance of organofluorine-containing species, the cross-coupling of amides and polyfluoroarenes, leading to new carbon-carbon bond-forming methodologies, would find useful applications in synthesis, late-stage functionalization, and rapid generation of molecular diversity. Herein, we present a novel synthesis of α-polyfluoroaryl amines via Sm/SmI₂ -mediated deoxygenative cross-coupling of aromatic amides with polyfluoroarenes through direct C-H functionalization. The structural and functional diversity of these readily available precursors provides a versatile and flexible strategy for the streamlined synthesis of α-polyfluoroaryl amines. Combining experimental and theoretical studies, a novel plausible mechanism of the α-aminocarbene-mediated C-H insertion has been revealed, which may stimulate future work for the development of novel methods in amine synthesis.

Nickel-Catalyzed Reductive Csp3-Ge Coupling of Alkyl Bromides with Chlorogermanes

Reductive cross-coupling provides facile access to organogermanes, but it remains largely unexplored. Herein we report a nickel-catalyzed reductive Csp³-Ge coupling of alkyl bromides with chlorogermanes. This work has established a new method for producing alkylgermanes. The reaction proceeds under very mild conditions and tolerates various functionalities including ether, alcohol, alkene, nitrile, amine, ester, phosphonates, amides, ketone, and aldehyde. The application of this method to the modification of bioactive molecules is demonstrated.

Photoredox Polyfluoroarylation of Alkyl Halides via Halogen Atom Transfer

Polyfluoroarene moieties are of interest in medicinal chemistry, agrochemicals, and material sciences. Herein, we present the first polyfluoroarylation of unactivated alkyl halides via a halogen atom transfer process. This method converts primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl halides into the respective polyfluoroaryl compounds in good yields in the presence of amide, carbamate, ester, aromatic, and sulfonamide moieties, including derivatives of complex bioactive molecules. Mechanistic work revealed that this transformation proceeds through an alkyl radical generated after the halogen atom transfer.

Regioselective and late-stage polyfluoroarylation of arenes with diverse fluoroaryl nucleophiles via Pd-catalysis

Dehydrogenative coupling of arenes with fluoroaryl nucleophiles enables the efficient synthesis of fluoroaromatic compounds from readily available starting materials.

Alkyl-GeMe3: Neutral Metalloid Radical Precursors upon Visible-Light Photocatalysis

Single-electron transfer (SET) oxidation of ionic hypervalent complexes, representatively alkyltrifluoroborates (Alkyl-BF3-) and alkylbis(catecholato)silicates (Alkyl-Si(cat)2-), have contributed substantially to alkyl radical generation compared to alkali or alkaline earth organometallics because of their excellent activity-stability balance. Herein, we report another proposal using neutral metalloid compounds, Alkyl-GeMe3, as radical precursors. Compared to Alkyl-BF3- and Alkyl-Si(cat)2-, Alkyl-GeMe3 show comparable activity in radical addition reactions. Moreover, Alkyl-GeMe3 gives the first success of group 14 tetraalkyl nucleophiles in nickel catalyzed cross-coupling. Meanwhile, the neutral nature of these organogermanes supplemented the limination of ionic precursors in purification and derivatization. A preliminary mechanism study corresponds to the procedure that alkyl radical generates from tetraalkylgermane radical cation with the assistance of a nucleophile, which may also enlighten the development of more non-ionic alkyl radical precursors with metalloid center.

Hydrogermylation of Alkenes via Organophotoredox-Initiated HAT Catalysis

This Letter discloses the straightforward hydrogermylation of olefins under visible-light organophotoredox-initiated HAT catalysis conditions to yield primary and secondary alkyl germanes at room temperature. The protocol is operationally simple, metal-free, and tolerant of various functional groups. The synthesized alkyl germanes proved to be highly robust toward acidic, basic, or oxidizing conditions and chemical transformations of C_sp²-GeEt₃ or C_sp²-BPin functionalities in their presence.

Nickel-Catalyzed Reductive C-Ge Coupling of Aryl/Alkenyl Electrophiles with Chlorogermanes

Cross-electrophile coupling has emerged as a promising tool for molecular synthesis; however, current studies have focused mainly on forging C-C bonds. We report a cross-electrophile C-Ge coupling reaction and thereby demonstrate the possibility of constructing organogermanes from carbon electrophiles and chlorogermanes. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions and offers access to both aryl and alkenyl germanes. Electron-rich, electron-poor, and ortho-/meta-/para-substituted (hetero)aryl electrophiles, as well as cyclic and acyclic alkenyl electrophiles, were coupled. Gram-scale reaction, incorporation of the -GeR₃ moiety into complex biologically active molecules, and derivatization of formed organogermanes are demonstrated.

A Systematic Study of the Effects of Complex Structure on Aryl Iodide Oxidative Addition at Bipyridyl-Ligated Gold(I) Centers

A combined theoretical and experimental approach has been used to study the unusual mechanism of oxidative addition of aryl iodides to [bipyAu(C2 H4 )]+ complexes. The modular nature of this system allowed a systematic assessment of the effects of complex structure. Computational comparisons between cationic gold and the isolobal (neutral) Pd0 and Pt0 complexes revealed similar mechanistic features, but with oxidative addition being significantly favored for the group 10 metals. Further differences between Au and Pd were seen in experimental studies: studying reaction rates as a function of electronic and steric properties showed that ligands bearing more electron-poor functionality increase the rate of oxidative addition; in a complementary way, electron-rich aryl iodides give faster rates. This divergence in mechanism compared to Pd suggests that Ar-X oxidative addition with Au can underpin a broad range of new or complementary transformations.

Germatranes and carbagermatranes: (hetero)aryl and alkyl coupling partners in Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions

In the past few decades, palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions have taken root in the construction of a complex synthetic community. The development of organometallics has been an important objective in this field. Our group has focused on exploiting new germanium-based reagents and the corresponding catalytic processes. In the past three years, we have established new methods for the synthesis of structure-modified (hetero)aryl germatranes and alkyl carbagermatranes. Particularly for alkyl carbagermatranes, the stability to be compatible with various derivatization reactions and the high activity for transmetallation (e.g. base/additive-free for primary alkyl carbagermatranes) distinguish them from many reported nucleophiles. In this article, we would introduce (1) the development process of organogermanium reagents in palladium-catalyzed cross-couplings; (2) the history of germatrane-type systems and the breakthrough we have made in the field; (3) the outlook for (carba)germatranes and alkyl-GeMe₃.

Transition-Metal-Free Coupling of Polyfluorinated Arenes and Functionalized, Masked Aryl Nucleophiles

A chemoselective C(sp²)−C(sp²) coupling of sufficiently electron‐deficient fluorinated arenes and functionalized N‐aryl‐N’‐silyldiazenes as masked aryl nucleophiles is reported. The fluoride‐promoted transformation involves the in situ generation of the aryl nucleophile decorated with various sensitive functional groups followed by a stepwise nucleophilic aromatic substitution (S_NAr). These reactions typically proceed at room temperature within minutes. This catalytic process allows for the functionalization of both coupling partners, furnishing highly fluorinated biaryls in good yields.

Base-Mediated Direct C-H Germylation of Heteroarenes and Arenes

The direct C-H germylation of heteroarenes, arenes, and benzylic C-H bonds promoted by lithium tetramethylpiperidide (LiTMP) is reported. The method is rapid, selective, and operationally simple, consisting of direct addition of all reagents at room temperature (one-pot procedure). The synthetic utility of these newly accessed aryl germanes as viable coupling partners in Pd catalysis is also showcased.
