Enantioselective Si-H Insertion Reactions of Diarylcarbenes for the Synthesis of Silicon-Stereogenic Silanes

Organocatalytic asymmetric synthesis of Si-stereogenic silacycles

A strong and confined Brønsted acid catalyzed enantioselective cyclization of bis(methallyl)silanes provides enantioenriched Si-stereogenic silacycles. High enantioselectivities of up to 96.5:3.5 er were obtained for a range of bis(methallyl)silanes. NMR and ESI-MS studies reveal that the formation of a covalent adduct irreversibly inhibits turnover. Remarkably, we found that acetic acid as an additive promotes the collapse of this adduct, enabling full turnover. Experimental investigation and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to elucidate the origin of this phenomenon and the observed enantioselectivity.

Catalytic Kinetic Resolution of Monohydrosilanes via Rhodium-Catalyzed Enantioselective Intramolecular Hydrosilylation

The catalytic access of silicon-stereogenic organosilanes remains a big challenge, and largely depends on the desymmetrization of the symmetric precursors with two identical substitutes attached to silicon atom. Here we report the construction of silicon-stereogenic organosilanes via catalytic kinetic resolution of racemic monohydrosilanes with good to excellent selectivity factors. Both Si-stereogenic dihydrobenzosiloles and Si-stereogenic monohydrosilanes could be efficiently accessed in one single operation via Rh-catalyzed enantioselective intramolecular hydrosilylation, employing (R,R)-Et-DuPhos as the optimal ligand. This catalytic protocol features mild conditions, a low catalyst loading (0.1 mol % [Rh(cod)Cl]2), high stereoinduction (S factor up to 152), and excellent scalability. Moreover, further derivatizations led to the efficient synthesis of uncommon middle-size (7- and 8-membered) Si-stereogenic silacycles. Preliminary mechanistic study indicates this reaction might undergo a modified Chalk-Harrod mechanism.

Silver-Catalyzed Dearomative Skeletal Editing of Indazoles by Donor Carbene Insertion

Given the prevalence of heterocyclic scaffolds in drug-related molecules, converting these highly modular heterocyclic scaffolds into structural diversified and dearomatized analogs is an ideal strategy for improving their physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties. Here, we described an efficient method for silver carbene-mediated dearomative N-N bond cleavage leading to skeletal hopping between indazole and 1,2-dihydroquinazoline via a highly selective single-carbon insertion procedure. Using this methodology, a series of dihydroquinazoline analogues with diarylmethylene-substituted quaternary carbon centers were constructed with excellent yields and good functional group compatibility, which was further illustrated by the late-stage diversification of important pharmaceutically active ingredients. DFT calculations indicated that the silver catalyst not only induces the formation of the silver carbene, but also activates the diazahexatriene intermediate, which plays a crucial role in the formation of the C-N bond.

Construction of Ge-Stereogenic Center by Desymmetric Carbene Insertion of Dihydrogermanes

We developed a method for the enantioselective synthesis of germanium-stereogenic compounds by the desymmetric carbene insertion of dihydrogermanes. A chiral rhodium phosphate catalyst decomposes diaryldiazo-methanes to generate rhodium carbenes that insert enantioselectively into one of the two Ge-H bonds of dihydrogermanes to form germanium-stereogenic compounds under mild reaction conditions. By this method, a variety of chiral germanes with germanium-stereogenic centers were synthesized in high yields and excellent enantioselectivities. Kinetic studies of the reaction showed that the diazo decomposition process was the rate-determining step. The remaining Ge-H bond of the chiral germane products provides a possibility for preparing chiral tetra-substituted germanium-stereogenic compounds.

Organocatalytic Asymmetric Synthesis of Si-Stereogenic Siloxanols

We report the organocatalytic synthesis of Si-stereogenic compounds via desymmetrization of a prochiral silanediol with a chiral imidazole-containing catalyst. This metal-free silylation method affords high yields with enantioselectivity up to 98:2 for various silanediol and silyl chloride substrate combinations (including secondary alkyl, vinyl, and H groups), accessing products with potential for further elaboration. NMR and X-ray studies reveal insight into the H-bonding interactions between the imidazole organocatalyst and the silanediol and the dual activating role of the Lewis basic imidazole to account for the high enantioselectivity.

Rh(II)-Catalyzed Si-H Insertion with Nosyl-hydrazone-Protected Aryl Donor Diazo Compounds

Dirhodium(II,II) paddlewheel catalysts were evaluated in silyl-hydrogen insertion reactions of aryl diazo compounds generated from o-nosyl hydrazones. The high reactivity of aryl diazo compounds necessitates their in situ generation from sulfonyl-protected hydrazones. Herein, we describe our efforts to evaluate this transformation utilizing Rh(II) catalysts, including those with tethered, axially coordinating ligands. The heteroleptic catalyst, Rh2(OAc)3(2-OX), provided the highest yield of silanes when dioxane was the solvent.

Catalytic Asymmetric P-H Insertion Reactions

Albeit notable endeavors in enantioselective carbene insertion into X-H bonds (X = C, O, N, S, Si, B), the catalytic asymmetric P-H insertion reactions still stand for a long-lasting challenge. By merging transition-metal catalysis with organocatalysis, we achieve a scalable enantioselective P-H insertion transformation between diazo pyrazoleamides and H-phosphine oxides that upon subsequent reduction delivers a wide variety of optically active β-hydroxyl phosphine oxides in good yields with high enantioselectivity. The achiral copper catalyst fosters the carbenoid insertion into the P-H bond, while the chiral cinchona alkaloid-derived organocatalyst controls the subsequent enantioselective outcome. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal that the copper catalyst chelates to the organocatalyst, enhances its acidity, and accordingly promotes the enantioselective proton transfer. Our work showcases the potential of combining transition-metal catalysis with organocatalysis to realize elusive asymmetric reactions.

"Sandwich" Diimine-Copper Catalyzed Trifluoroethylation and Pentafluoropropylation of Unactivated C(sp3 )-H Bonds by Carbene Insertion

We report here "sandwich"-diimine copper complex-catalyzed trifluoroethylation and pentafluoropropylation of unactivated C(sp3 )-H bonds in alkyl esters, halides, and protected amines by employing CF3 CHN2 and CF3 CF2 CHN2 reagents. Reactions proceed in dichloromethane solvent at room temperature. Identical C-H functionalization conditions and stoichiometries are employed for generality and convenience. Selectivities for C-H insertions are higher for compounds possessing stronger electron-withdrawing substituents. Preliminary mechanistic studies point to a mechanism involving a pre-equilibrium forming a "sandwich"-diimine copper-CF3 CHN2 complex followed by rate-determining loss of nitrogen affording the reactive copper carbene. It reacts with trifluoromethyldiazomethane about 6.5 times faster than with 1-fluoroadamantane explaining the need for slow addition of the diazo compound.

Enantioconvergent construction of stereogenic silicon via Lewis base-catalyzed dynamic kinetic silyletherification of racemic chlorosilanes

Organosilanes possessing an enantioenriched stereogenic silicon center are important in many branches of chemistry, yet they remain challenging to synthesize in a practical and scalable way. Here we report a dynamic kinetic silyletherification process of racemic chlorosilanes with (S)-lactates using 4-aminopyridine as a Lewis base catalyst. This enantioconvergent approach asymmetrically constructs the stereogenic silicon center in a different manner from traditional resolution or desymmetrization. A range of silylethers have been prepared with high diastereoselectivity on up to 10 g-scale, allowing the practical synthesis of diverse enantioenriched organosilane analogs.

Enantioselective Synthesis of 6/5-Spirosilafluorenes by Asymmetric Ring Expansion of 4/5-Spirosilafluorenes with Alkynes

A rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric ring expansion of 4/5-spirosilafluorenes with terminal alkynes has been developed using sterically demanding binaphthyl phosphoramidite ligand. The reaction is not only strategically distinct from cyclization or cycloaddition but also showcases the first enantioselective synthesis of axially chiral 6/5-spirosilafluorenes.

An unusual autocatalysis with an air-stable Pd complex to promote enantioselective synthesis of Si-stereogenic enynes

Given the powerful potential of chiral-at-silicon chemistry, enantioselective synthesis of Si-stereogenic centers has attracted substantial research interest in recent years. However, the catalytic asymmetric synthesis of Si-stereogenic organosilicon compounds remains an appealing venture and is a challenging subject because of the difficulty in achieving high reactivity and stereoselectivity for "silicon-center" transformations. Herein, we disclose a highly enantioselective palladium-catalyzed hydrosilylation of 1,3-diynes with dihydrosilanes, which enables the facile preparation of Si-stereogenic enynes and an enyne-linked chiral polymer (polyenyne) in good yields and excellent ees (up to >99%) by desymmetrization. The unusual stereoselectivity in this reaction is achieved by precisely controlling the steric hindrance and electronic effect of the newly developed chiral ligands, resulting in a wide range of chiral silanes and a Si-containing polymer bearing a Si-stereogenic center which is otherwise difficult to access. The key to the high enantioselectivity relies on catalyst aggregation-induced non-covalent interaction, which exerts a remarkably positive influence on the Si-H bond activation and enhancement of enantioselectivity, in which the palladium/P-ligand complex was proved to be air-stable and moisture-insensitive in this reaction.

Recent Progress in Cyclic Aryliodonium Chemistry: Syntheses and Applications

Hypervalent aryliodoumiums are intensively investigated as arylating agents. They are excellent surrogates to aryl halides, and moreover they exhibit better reactivity, which allows the corresponding arylation reactions to be performed under mild conditions. In the past decades, acyclic aryliodoniums are widely explored as arylation agents. However, the unmet need for acyclic aryliodoniums is the improvement of their notoriously low reaction economy because the coproduced aryl iodides during the arylation are often wasted. Cyclic aryliodoniums have their intrinsic advantage in terms of reaction economy, and they have started to receive considerable attention due to their valuable synthetic applications to initiate cascade reactions, which can enable the construction of complex structures, including polycycles with potential pharmaceutical and functional properties. Here, we are summarizing the recent advances made in the research field of cyclic aryliodoniums, including the nascent design of aryliodonium species and their synthetic applications. First, the general preparation of typical diphenyl iodoniums is described, followed by the construction of heterocyclic iodoniums and monoaryl iodoniums. Then, the initiated arylations coupled with subsequent domino reactions are summarized to construct polycycles. Meanwhile, the advances in cyclic aryliodoniums for building biaryls including axial atropisomers are discussed in a systematic manner. Finally, a very recent advance of cyclic aryliodoniums employed as halogen-bonding organocatalysts is described.

X-H Bond Insertion Promoted by Heterogeneous Dirhodium Metal-Organic Cage with Alkynes as Safe Carbene Precursors

A facile and efficient methodology for the generation of the C-X (X = Si, B) bond through a carbene insertion process was demonstrated using a dirhodium metal-organic cage, MOC-Rh-1, as a heterogeneous catalyst. A series of functionalized alkynes were utilized as safe carbene precursors to furnish Si-H and B-H insertion products in moderate to excellent yields. These reactions featured a high atom-economy, a broad substrate scope, and mild reaction conditions. Moreover, the as-prepared MOC-Rh-1 catalyst was recovered easily from the reaction system by simple centrifugation and reused for ten runs without a significant loss in activity, which made good use of the valuable precious metal rhodium.

Ligand-enabled silver-catalyzed carbene insertion into the N–H bond of aliphatic and electron-rich aromatic amines

The stable effect of tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligand and 1,2-diaminocyclohexane ligand on the silver metal center was used respectively, to realize the efficient N–H bond insertion reaction of carbene to aliphatic amines and aromatic amines.

Rhodium-Catalyzed Dynamic Kinetic Asymmetric Hydrosilylation to Access Silicon-Stereogenic Center

Strategies on the construction of enantiomerically pure silicon-stereogenic silanes generally relies on desymmetrization of prochiral and symmetric substrates. However, dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformations of organosilicon compounds have remained underdeveloped and unforeseen owing to a lack of an effective method for deracemization of the static silicon stereocenters. Here we report the first Rh-catalyzed dynamic kinetic asymmetric intramolecular hydrosilylation (DyKAH) with "silicon-centered" racemic hydrosilanes that enables the facile preparation of silicon-stereogenic benzosiloles in good yields and excellent enantioselectivities. The special rhodium catalyst controlled by non-diastereopure-type mixed phosphine-phosphoramidite ligand with axial chirality and multiple stereocenters can induce enantioselectivity efficiently in this novel DyKAH reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the amide moiety in chiral ligand plays important role in facilitating the S_N 2 substitution of chloride ion to realize the chiral inversion of silicon center.

Pd/Ming-Phos-Catalyzed Asymmetric Three-Component Arylsilylation of N-Sulfonylhydrazones: Enantioselective Synthesis of gem-Diarylmethine Silanes

A Pd-catalyzed enantioselective three-component reaction of N-sulfonylhydrazones, aryl bromides, and silylboronic esters is developed, enabling the synthesis of chiral gem-diarylmethine silanes in high enantioselectivity with the use of a newly identified Ming-Phos. Compared with N-tosyl, the more easily decomposed N-mesitylsulfonyl is more suitable as the masking group of electron-rich hydrazone to improve the reaction efficiency. The reaction features a broad scope concerning both coupling partners, high enantioselectivity, and mild reaction conditions. The ready access to enantiomers and utility of this catalytic method are also presented.

“Sandwich” Diimine‐Copper Catalysts for C−H Functionalization by Carbene Insertion

We report here "sandwich" diimine-copper(I) catalysts for C(sp³ )-H bond functionalization. Reactions of alkanes and ethers with trimethylsilyldiazomethane, ethyl diazoacetate, and trifluoromethyl-diazomethane have been demonstrated. We also report C(sp³ )-H bond methylation, benzylation, and diphenylmethylation by diazomethane, aryldiazomethanes, and diphenyldiazomethane. These reactions are rare examples of base-metal catalyzed, intermolecular C(sp³ )-H functionalizations by employing unactivated diazo compounds. Electrophilicity and unique steric environment of "sandwich"-copper catalysts are likely reasons for their catalytic efficiency.

Enantioselective synthesis of acyclic monohydrosilanes by steric hindrance assisted C-H silylation

Herein, a rhodium-catalyzed desymmetrization of dihydrosilanes with heterocyclic compounds via intermolecular dehydrogenative C-H silylation is developed. The strategy tolerates a variety of thianaphthene and thiophene derivatives, giving rise to a wide range of silicon-stereogenic acyclic monohydrosilanes. Several rare skeletons featuring bis-silicon-stereogenic centers were also designed to enhance the library's diversity further. Preliminary mechanistic studies reveal that the surrounding spatial environment of the Si-center plays a crucial role in enabling intermolecular C-H silylation preferentially.

Organocatalytic Asymmetric Synthesis of Si-Stereogenic Silyl Ethers

Functionalized enantiopure organosilanes are important building blocks with applications in various fields of chemistry; nevertheless, asymmetric synthetic methods for their preparation are rare. Here we report the first organocatalytic enantioselective synthesis of tertiary silyl ethers possessing “central chirality” on silicon. The reaction proceeds via a desymmetrizing carbon–carbon bond forming silicon–hydrogen exchange reaction of symmetrical bis(methallyl)silanes with phenols using newly developed imidodiphosphorimidate (IDPi) catalysts. A variety of enantiopure silyl ethers was obtained in high yields with good chemo- and enantioselectivities and could be readily derivatized to several useful chiral silicon compounds, leveraging the olefin functionality and the leaving group nature of the phenoxy substituent.

Silicon-Stereogenic Monohydrosilane: Synthesis and Applications

Optically active organosilanes have been demonstrated to be versatile chiral reagents in synthetic chemistry since the early seminal contributions by Sommer and Corriu. Among these silicon-containing chiral architectures, monohydrosilanes, which bear a Si-H bond, hold a unique position because of their facile transformations through stereospecific Si-carbon or Si-heteroatom bond-formation reactions. In addition, those compounds have also been leveraged as chiral reagents for alcohol resolution, chiral auxiliaries, mechanistic probes, as well as potential optoelectronic materials. This Minireview comprehensively summarizes the synthesis and synthetic applications of silicon-stereogenic monohydrosilanes, particularly the advances in the transition-metal-catalyzed asymmetric synthesis of this class of functional molecules.

Enantioselective Intermolecular C-H Silylation of Heteroarenes for the Synthesis of Acyclic Si-Stereogenic Silanes

Intermolecular C-H silylation for the synthesis of acyclic silanes bearing a silicon-stereogenic center in one enantiomeric form remains unknown to date. Herein, we report the first enantioselective intermolecular C-H silylation of heteroarenes for the synthesis of acyclic silicon-stereogenic heteroarylsilanes. This process undergoes a rhodium-catalyzed direct intermolecular dehydrogenative Si-H/C-H cross-coupling, giving access to a variety of acyclic heteroarylated silicon-stereogenic monohydrosilanes, including bis-Si-stereogenic silanes, in decent yields with excellent chemo-, regio-, and stereo-control, which significantly enlarge the chemical space of the optically active silicon-stereogenic monohydrosilanes.

Gold nanoparticle-catalysed functionalization of carbon-hydrogen bonds by carbene transfer reactions

Gold nanoparticles stabilized by NHC ligands and supported onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO) catalyse the functionalization of cyclohexane and benzene C-H bonds upon insertion of carbene CHCO₂Et (from N₂CHCO₂Et) groups. This is the first example in which such C_sp3-H or C_sp2-H bonds are functionalized with this strategy with nanoparticulated gold. This Au-NP@rGO material shows an exceptional activity, providing TON values 5-10 times higher than those already reported for molecular gold catalysts. Recyclability is also effective, reaching an accumulated TON value of 1400 after six consecutive uses.

Proton or Carbene Transfer? On the Dark and Light Reaction of Diazoalkanes with Alcohols

The formal alkylation reaction of OH groups with diazoalkanes under catalyst-free reaction conditions finds broad application in organic synthesis. However, even today, this reaction is mainly limited to the use of diazomethane as reaction partner. In this combined experimental and theoretical study, we aim at a fundamental understanding of the reaction of diazoalkanes with alcohols to make this transformation amenable to a generalized approach towards formal alkylation reactions of alcohols with diazoalkanes. Experimental and theoretical studies suggest a direct proton transfer only in exceptional cases. In a more general setting, such O-H functionalization proceed both under dark and photochemical conditions via a key hydrogen-bonded singlet carbene intermediate that undergoes a protonation-addition mechanism. We conclude with applications of this approach in O-H functionalization reactions of alcohols, including simple fluorinated, halogenated and aliphatic alcohols and showcase functional-group tolerance of this method in the reaction of biologically active and pharmaceutically relevant alcohols.

Photocatalytic Synthesis of Diarylmethyl Silanes via 1,6-Conjugate Addition of Silyl Radicals to p-Quinone Methides

A novel photocatalytic method for the preparation of diarylmethyl silanes was reported through silyl radicals addition strategy to p-QMs (p-quinone methides). This protocol could tolerate a variety of functional groups affording the corresponding silylation products with moderate to excellent yields. The resulting silylation products could be easily converted into a series of bioactive GPR40 agonists and useful p-QMs precursors for the synthesis of compounds possessing both quaternary carbon centers and silicon substituents through simple operation. A plausible mechanism of silyl radicals to p-QMs was proposed on the basis of experimental results and previous literature.

Divergent stereochemical outcomes in the insertion of donor/donor carbenes into the C-H bonds of stereogenic centers

Intramolecular C-H insertions with donor/donor dirhodium carbenes provide a concise and highly stereoselective method to set two contiguous stereocenters in a single step. Herein, we report the insertion of donor/donor carbenes into stereogenic carbon centers allowing access to trisubstituted benzodihydrofurans in a single step. This study illuminates, for the first time, the stereochemical impact on the carbene center and delineates the structural factors that enable control over both stereogenic centers. Sterically bulky, highly activated C-H insertion centers exhibit high substrate control yielding a single diastereomer and a single enantiomer of product regardless of the catalyst used. Less bulky, less activated C-H insertion centers exhibit catalyst control over the diastereomeric ratio (dr), where a single enantiomer of each diastereomer is observed with high selectivity. A combination of experimental studies and DFT calculations was used to elucidate the origin of these results. First, hydride transfer from the stereogenic insertion site proceeds with high stereoselectivity to the carbene center, thus determining the absolute configuration of the product. Second, the short lived zwitterionic intermediate can diaster-eoselectively ring-close by a hitherto unreported SE2 mechanism that is either controlled by the substrate or the catalyst. These results demonstrate that donor/donor carbenes undergo uniquely stereoselective reactions that originate from a stepwise reaction mechanism, in contrast to the analogous concerted reactions of carbenes with one or more electron-withdrawing groups attached.

An unprecedented and convenient Si–C(sp) bond-forming cross-coupling of alkynyl bromides with hydrosilanes has been established for the facile synthesis of alkynylsilanes in good yields and with excellent chemoselectivity.

Enantioselective Synthesis of Silicon-Stereogenic Monohydrosilanes by Rhodium-Catalyzed Intramolecular Hydrosilylation

Enantiopure monohydrosilanes are versatile chiral reagents for alcohol resolution and mechanistic investigation. Herein, we have demonstrated the asymmetric synthesis of monohydrosilanes via an intramolecular hydrosilylation strategy. This protocol is suitable for the synthesis of five- and six-membered cyclic monohydrosilanes, including a class of chiral oxasilacycles, with excellent diastereo-, regio-, and enantioselectivities. Notably, the catalyst loading could be reduced to 0.1 mol % which makes this one of the most efficient methods to access chiral monohydrosilanes. Mechanistic studies and DFT calculations indicate this Rh-catalyzed intramolecular asymmetric hydrosilylation reaction might proceed via a Chalk-Harrod mechanism, and the enantio-determining step was predicted to be oxidative addition of Si-H bond.

Dirhodium-Catalyzed Enantioselective B-H Bond Insertion of gem-Diaryl Carbenes: Efficient Access to gem-Diarylmethine Boranes

The scarcity of reliable methods for synthesizing chiral gem-diarylmethine borons limits their applications. Herein, we report a method for highly enantioselective dirhodium-catalyzed B-H bond insertion reactions with diaryl diazomethanes as carbene precursors. These reactions afforded chiral gem-diarylmethine borane compounds in high yield (up to 99 % yield), high activity (turnover numbers up to 14 300), high enantioselectivity (up to 99 % ee) and showed unprecedented broad functional group tolerance. The borane compounds synthesized by this method could be efficiently transformed into diaryl methanol, diaryl methyl amine, and triaryl methane derivatives with good stereospecificity. Mechanistic studies suggested that the borane adduct coordinated to the rhodium catalyst and thus interfered with decomposition of the diazomethane, and that insertion of a rhodium carbene (generated from the diaryl diazomethane) into the B-H bond was most likely the rate-determining step.

Dirhodium(ii)-catalysed cycloisomerization of azaenyne: rapid assembly of centrally and axially chiral isoindazole frameworks

Described herein is a dirhodium(ii)-catalyzed asymmetric cycloisomerization reaction of azaenyne through a cap-tether synergistic modulation strategy, which represents the first catalytic asymmetric cycloisomerization of azaenyne. This reaction is highly challenging because of its inherent strong background reaction leading to racemate formation and the high capability of coordination of the nitrogen atom resulting in catalyst deactivation. Varieties of centrally chiral isoindazole derivatives could be prepared in up to 99 : 1 d.r., 99 : 1 er and 99% yield and diverse enantiomerically enriched atropisomers bearing two five-membered heteroaryls have been accessed by using an oxidative central-to-axial chirality transfer strategy. The tethered nitrogen atom incorporated into the starting materials enabled easy late-modifications of the centrally and axially chiral products via C–H functionalizations, which further demonstrated the appealing synthetic utilities of this powerful asymmetric cyclization.

Rh(ii)-catalyzed asymmetric cycloisomerization of azaenyne through a cap-tether synergistic modulation strategy was described. Diverse centrally and axially chiral isoindazoles were prepared and directed C–H late-stage modifications were developed.

Melding of Experiment and Theory Illuminates Mechanisms of Metal-Catalyzed Rearrangements: Computational Approaches and Caveats

This review summarizes approaches and caveats in computational modeling of transition-metal-catalyzed sigmatropic rearrangements involving carbene transfer. We highlight contemporary examples of combined synthetic and theoretical investigations that showcase the synergy achievable by integrating experiment and theory.

Silver-Catalyzed N-H Functionalization of Aryl/Aryl Diazoalkanes with Anilines

Herein, we report on the N-H functionalization reaction of primary and secondary anilines with diaryldiazoalkanes using simple AgPF₆ as catalyst. We demonstrated broad applicability in the reaction of diaryldiazoalkanes with different anilines (31 examples, up to 97% yield). Furthermore, we propose a possible reaction mechanism for the N-H functionalization.

Palladium-Catalyzed Enantioselective Carbene Insertion into Carbon-Silicon Bonds of Silacyclobutanes

We report herein a highly efficient palladium-catalyzed carbene insertion into strained Si-C bonds with excellent enantioselectivity, which provides a rapid and distinct method to access silacyclopentanes with a three- or four-substituted stereocenter asymmetrically. Mechanistic studies using hybrid density functional theory suggest a catalytic cycle involving oxidative addition, carbene migratory insertion, and reductive elimination. In addition, roles of the chiral ligands in controlling the reaction enantioselectivity are also elucidated.
