Ring-in-Ring(s) Complexes Exhibiting Tunable Multicolor Photoluminescence

Tunable Fluorescence, Morphology, and Antibacterial Behaviors of Conjugated Oligomers via Host-Guest Supramolecular Self-Assembly

Host-guest supramolecular self-assembly has become one facile but efficient way to regulate the optical properties of conjugated oligomers and construct promising photofunctional materials. Herein, we design two linear conjugated oligomers terminated with two or four pyridinium moieties, which show different 1:1 'head-to-tail' binding patterns with cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) to form host-guest supramolecules. After being encapsulated in the hydrophobic cavity of the CB[8] host, the fluorescence emission of the conjugated oligomers undergoes significant changes, resulting in tunable fluorescence color with enhanced quantum yields. Triggered by the aggregation of supramolecules, the regular or rigid binding modes lead to the formation of cuboids and spheroids in nanoscale, respectively. Due to the macrocyclic-confinement effect, the light-driven reactive oxygen species (ROS) production of the host-guest complex is increased significantly, thereby improving the photodynamic antibacterial performance toward Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus).

Phosphorescent acyclic cucurbituril solid supramolecular multicolour delayed fluorescence behaviour

Organic photoluminescent macrocyclic hosts have been widely advanced in many fields. Phosphorescent hosts with the ability to bind organic guests have rarely been reported. Herein, acyclic cucurbituril modified with four carboxylic acids (ACB-COOH) is mined to present uncommon purely organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) at 510 nm with a lifetime of 1.86 μs. Its RTP properties are significantly promoted with an extended lifetime up to 2.12 s and considerable quantum yield of 6.29% after assembly with a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix. By virtue of the intrinsic self-crimping configuration of ACB-COOH, organic guests, including fluorescence dyes (Rhodamine B (RhB) and Pyronin Y (PyY)) and a drug molecule (morphine (Mor)), could be fully encapsulated by ACB-COOH to attain energy transfer involving phosphorescent acyclic cucurbituril. Ultimately, as-prepared systems are successfully exploited to establish multicolor afterglow materials and visible sensing of morphine. As an expansion of phosphorescent acyclic cucurbituril, the host afterglow color can be readily regulated by attaching different aromatic sidewalls. This study develops the fabrication strategies and application scope of a supramolecular phosphorescent host and opens up a new direction for the manufacture of intelligent long-lived luminescent materials.

Reversing the stereoselectivity of intramolecular [2+2] photocycloaddition utilizing cucurbit[8]uril as a molecular flask

Macrocyclic hosts, such as cucurbit[8]uril (CB8), can significantly influence the outcomes of chemical reactions involving encapsulated reactive guests. In this study, we demonstrate that CB8 completely reverses the stereoselectivity of intramolecular [2+2] photo-cycloaddition reactions. Notably, it was also found that CB8 can trigger the unreactive diene to be reactive.

Monitoring Hierarchical Assembly of Ring-in-Ring and Russian Doll Complexes Based on Carbon Nanoring by Förster Resonance Energy Transfer

We presented the construction of the ring-in-ring and Russian doll complexes on the basis of triptycene-derived carbon nanoring (TP-[12]CPP), which not only acts as a host for pillar[5]arene (P5A) but also serves as an energy donor for building Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) systems. We also demonstrated that their hierarchical assembly processes could be efficiently monitored in real time using FRET. NMR, UV-vis and fluorescence, and mass spectroscopy analyses confirmed the successful encapsulation of the guests P5A/P5A-An by TP-[12]CPP, facilitated by C-H···π and ···π interactions, resulting in the formation of a distinct ring-in-ring complex with a binding constant of Ka = 2.23 × 104 M-1. The encapsulated P5A/P5A-An can further reverse its role to be a host for binding energy acceptors to form Russian doll complexes, as evidenced by the occurrence of FRET and mass spectroscopy analyses. The apparent binding constant of the Russian doll complexes was up to 3.6 × 104 M-1, thereby suggesting an enhanced synergistic effect. Importantly, the Russian doll complexes exhibited both intriguing one-step and sequential FRET dependent on the subcomponent P5A/P5A-An during hierarchical assembly, reminiscent of the structure and energy transfer of the light-harvesting system presented in purple bacteria.

Tunable Nano-Bending Structures of Loosened/Tightened Lassos with Bi-Stable Vibration-Induced Emissions for Multi-Manipulations of White-Light Emissions and Sensor Applications

The first tunable nano-bending structures of [1]rotaxane containing a single-fluorophoric N,N'-diphenyl-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DPAC) moiety (i.e., [1]RA) are developed as a loosened lasso structure to feature the bright white-light emission [CIE (0.27, 0.33), Φ = 21.2%] in THF solution, where bi-stable states of bending and twisted structures of DPAC unit in [1]RA produce cyan and orange emissions at 480 and 600 nm, respectively. With acid/base controls, tunable loosened/tightened nano-loops of corresponding [1]rotaxanes (i.e., [1]RA/[1]RB) can be achieved via the shuttling of macrocycles reversibly, and thus to adjust their respective white-light/cyan emissions, where the cyan emission of [1]RB is obtained due to the largest conformational constraint of DPAC moiety in its bending form of [1]RB with a tightened lasso structure. Additionally, the non-interlocked analog M-Boc only shows the orange emission, revealing the twisted form of DPAC fluorophore in M-Boc without any conformational constraint. Moreover, the utilization of solvents (with different viscosities and polarities), temperatures, and water fractions could serve as effective tools to adjust the bi-stable vibration-induced emission (VIE) colors of [1]rotaxanes. Finally, tuning ratiometric emission colors of adaptive conformations of DPAC moieties by altering nano-bending structures in [1]rotaxanes and external stimuli can be further developed as intelligent temperature and viscosity sensor materials.

Internal Dynamics and Modular Peripheral Binding in Stimuli-Responsive 3 : 2 Host:Guest Complexes

Now that the chemistry of 1 : 1 host:guest complexes is well-established, it is surprising to note that higher stoichiometry (oligomeric) complexes, especially those with excess host, remain largely unexplored. Yet, proteins tend to oligomerize, affording new functions for cell machinery. Here, we show that cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]) macrocycles combined with symmetric, linear di-viologens form unusual 3 : 2 host:guest complexes exhibiting remarkable dynamic properties, host self-sorting, and external ring-translocation. These results highlight the structural tunability of cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) based 3 : 2 host:guest complexes in water and their responsiveness toward several stimuli (chemicals, pH, redox).

Light-Driven Reversible Multicolor Supramolecular Shuttle

Light-driven multicolor supramolecular systems mainly rely on the doping of dyes or a photo-reaction to produce unidirectional luminescence. Herein, we use visible light to drive the bidirectional reversible multicolor supramolecular shuttle from blue to green, white, yellow, up to orange by simple encapsulation of spiropyran-modified cyanostilbene (BCNMC) by the macrocyclic cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) monomer. The resultant host-guest complex displayed enhanced fluorescence properties, i.e. the multicolor fluorescence shuttle changed from blue to orange in the dark within 2 hours and reverted to the original state upon visible light irradiation for 30 s. Benefiting from the sensitivity of the spiropyran moiety to light, it can spontaneously isomerize from the ring-opened state to a ring-closed isomer in aqueous solution, and this photo-isomerization reaction is a reversible process under visible light irradiation, leading to the multicolor luminescence supramolecular shuttle as a result of intramolecular energy transfer. In addition, the light also drove the reversible conversion of the topological morphology of the host-guest complex from two-dimensional nanoplatelets to nanospheres. Different from the widely reported molecular rotaxane "shuttle", the spiropyran supramolecular shuttle confined in the macrocyclic host CB[8] not only modulated a reversible topological morphology by light but also exhibited multicolor luminescence, which was successfully applied in programmed and rewritable information encryption.

Host-Guest Chemistry in Binary and Ternary Complexes Utilizing π-Conjugated Carbon Nanorings

The carbon nanorings, possessing a radial π system, have garnered significant attention primarily due to their size-dependent photophysical properties and the presence of a unique curved π-conjugated cavity. This is evidenced by the rapid proliferation of publications. Furthermore, the integration of building blocks into CPP skeletons can confer [n]CPPs with novel and exceptional photophysical and electronic characteristics, as well as chiral properties and host-guest interactions, thereby augmenting the diversity of [n]CPPs. Notably, the curved π surface structures and concave cavity of carbon nanorings enable them to host aromatic or non-aromatic guests with a complementarily curved surface, resulting in interesting binary or ternary complexes. This review provides a comprehensive treatment of literature reports on binary and ternary complexes, focusing on both their host-guest interactions and properties. It is important to note that the scope of this review is limited to host-guest chemistry in binary and ternary complexes based on π-conjugated carbon nanorings.

Polymerization Based on Modified β-Cyclodextrin Achieves Efficient Phosphorescence Energy Transfer for Anti-Counterfeiting

Supramolecular polymerization can not only activate guest phosphorescence, but also promote phosphorescence Förster resonance energy transfer and induce effective delayed fluorescence. Herein, the solid supramolecular assemblies of ternary copolymers based on acrylamide, modified β-cyclodextrin (CD), and carbazole (CZ) are reported. After doping with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and dyes, a NIR luminescence supramolecular composite with a lifetime of 1.07 s, an energy transfer efficiency of up to 97.4% is achieved through tandem phosphorescence energy transfer. The ternary copolymers can realize macrocyclic enrichment of dyes in comparison to CZ and acrylamide copolymers without CD, which can facilitate energy transfer between triplet and singlet with a high donor-acceptor ratio. Additionally, the flexible polymeric films exhibit regulable lifetime, tunable luminescence color, and repeatable switchable afterglow by adjusting the excitation wavelength, donor-acceptor ratio, and wet/dry stimuli. The luminescence materials are successfully applied to information encryption and anti-counterfeiting.

Synthesis of Naphthalimide Derivatives and Their Luminescence upon Complexation with Cucurbit[n]uril Hosts

A series of naphthalimide derivatives are synthesized and their binding behavior upon complexation with cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]s) has been investigated. With a heavy atom (bromine) on the naphthalimide core, 4-bromo-1,8-naphthalimide derivatives 1-4 show short room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) lifetimes with low quantum yields. Their RTP properties are significantly enhanced in the presence of CB[8] or CB[10] both in aqueous solution and solid state owing to the efficient suppression of nonradiative decay and isolation of quenching factors by the rigid cavity of CB[n]. Without the bromine atom, 1,8-naphthalimide derivatives 5 and 6 show strong excimer emission upon complexation with CB[10] accompanied by fluorescence transition from blue to cyan. The fluorescence colors of 4-(dimethylamino)-1,8-naphthalimide derivatives 7 and 8 change from blue to white to yellow with the addition of CB[n]. This host-guest complexation strategy to modulate the luminescence of the luminophore would further broaden the application of luminescent materials.

Exciplex Emission and Förster Resonance Energy Transfer in Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon-Based Bischromophoric Cyclophanes and Homo[2]catenanes

Energy transfer and exciplex emission are not only crucial photophysical processes in many living organisms but also important for the development of smart photonic materials. We report, herein, the rationally designed synthesis and characterization of two highly charged bischromophoric homo[2]catenanes and one cyclophane incorporating a combination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, i.e., anthracene, pyrene, and perylene, which are intrinsically capable of supporting energy transfer and exciplex formation. The possible coconformations of the homo[2]catenanes, on account of their dynamic behavior, have been probed by Density Functional Theory calculations. The unique photophysical properties of these exotic molecules have been explored by steady-state and time-resolved absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies. The tetracationic pyrene-perylene cyclophane system exhibits emission emanating from a highly efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism which occurs in 48 ps, while the octacationic homo[2]catenane displays a weak exciplex photoluminescence following extremely fast (<0.3 ps) exciplex formation. The in-depth fundamental understanding of these photophysical processes involved in the fluorescence of bischromophoric cyclophanes and homo[2]catenanes paves the way for their use in future bioapplications and photonic devices.

Supramolecular Shish Kebabs: Higher Order Dimeric Structures from Ring-in-Rings Complexes with Conformational Adaptivity

Use of abiotic chemical systems for understanding higher order superstructures is challenging. Here we report a ring-in-ring(s) system comprising a hydrogen-bonded macrocycle and cyclobis(paraquat-o-phenylene) tetracation (o-Box) or cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) tetracation (CBPQT⁴⁺ , p-Box) that assembles to construct discrete higher order structures with adaptive conformation. As indicated by mass spectrometry, computational modeling, NMR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, this ring-in-ring(s) system features the box-directed aggregation of multiple macrocycles, leading to generation of several stable species such as H4G (1 a/o-Box) and H5G (1 a/o-Box). Remarkably, a dimeric shish-kebab-like ring-in-rings superstructure H7G2 (1 a/o-Box) or H8G2 (1 a/p-Box) is formed from the coaxial stacking of two ring-in-rings units. The formation of such unique dimeric superstructures is attributed to the large π-surface of this 2D planar macrocycle and the conformational variation of both host and guest.

Multicolor emission based on a N, N'-Disubstituted dihydrodibenzo [a, c] phenazine crown ether macrocycle

Dynamic fluorophore 9,14-diphenyl-9,14-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DPAC) affords a new platform to produce diverse emission outputs. In this paper, a novel DPAC-containing crown ether macrocycle D-6 is synthesized and characterized. Host-guest interactions of D-6 with different ammonium guests produced a variety of fluorescence with hypsochromic shifts up to 130 nm, which are found to be affected by choice of solvent or guest and host/guest stoichiometry. Formation of supramolecular complexes were confirmed by UV-vis titration, ¹H NMR and HRMS spectroscopy.

Amphiphilicity-Controlled Polychromatic Emissive Supramolecular Self-Assemblies for Highly Sensitive and Efficient Artificial Light-Harvesting Systems

Dynamic sequential control of photoluminescence by supramolecular approaches has become a great issue in supramolecular chemistry. However, developing a systematic strategy to construct polychromatic photoluminescent supramolecular self-assemblies for improving the efficiency and sensitivity of artificial light-harvesting systems still remains a challenge. Here, a series of amphiphilicity-controlled supramolecular self-assemblies with polychromatic fluorescence based on lower-rim hexyl-modified sulfonatocalix[4]arene (SC4A6) and N-alkyl-modified p-phenylene divinylpyridiniums (PVPn, n = 2-7) as efficient light-harvesting platforms is reported. PVPn shows wide ranges of polychromatic fluorescence by co-assembling with SC4A6, whose emission trends significantly depend on the modified alkyl-chains of PVPn. The formed PVPn-SC4A6 co-assemblies as light-harvesting platforms are extremely sensitive for transferring the energy to two near-infrared emissive acceptors, Nile blue (NiB) and Rhodamine 800. After optimizing the amphiphilicity of PVPn-SC4A6 systems, the PVPn-SC4A6-NiB light-harvesting systems achieve an ultrasensitive working concentration for NiB (2 nm) and an ultrahigh antenna effect up to 91.0. Furthermore, the two different kinds of light-harvesting nanoparticles exhibit good performance on near-infrared imaging in the Golgi apparatus and mitochondria, respectively.

Molecular Engineering of Noncovalent Dimerization

Dimers are probably the simplest model to facilitate the understanding of fundamental physical and chemical processes that take place in much-expanded systems like aggregates, crystals, and other solid states. The molecular interplay within a dimer differentiates it from the corresponding monomeric state and determines its features. Molecular engineering of noncovalent dimerization through applied supramolecular restrictions enables additional control over molecular interplay, particularly over its dynamic aspect. This Perspective introduces the recent effort that has been made in the molecular engineering of noncovalent dimerization, including supramolecular dimers, folda-dimers, and macrocyclic dimers. It showcases how the variation in supramolecular restrictions endows molecular-based materials with improved performance and/or functions like enhanced emission, room-temperature phosphorescence, and effective catalysis. We particularly discuss pseudostatic dimers that can sustain molecular interplay for a long period of time, yet are still flexible enough to adapt to variations. The pseudostatic feature allows for active species to decay along an alternate pathway, thereby spinning off emerging features that are not readily accessible from conventional dynamic systems.

Conformationally Confined Emissive Cationic Macrocycle with Photocontrolled Organelle-Specific Translocation

The optimization of molecular conformation and aggregation modes is of great significance in creation of new luminescent materials for biochemical research and medical diagnostics. Herein, a highly emissive macrocycle (1) is reported, which is constructed by the cyclization reaction of triphenylamine with benzyl bromide and exhibits very distinctive photophysical performance both in aqueous solution and the solid state. Structural analysis reveals that the 1 can form self-interpenetrated complex and emit bright yellow fluorescence in the crystal lattice. The distorted yet symmetrical structure can endow 1 with unique two-photon absorption property upon excitation by near-infrared light. Also, 1 can be utilized as an efficient photosensitizer to produce singlet oxygen (¹ O₂ ) both in inanimate milieu and under cellular environment. More intriguingly, due to the strong association of 1 with negatively charged biomacromolecules, organelle-specific migration is achieved from lysosome to nucleus during the ¹ O₂ -induced cell apoptosis process. To be envisaged, this conformationally confined cationic macrocycle with photocontrolled lysosome-to-nucleus translocation may provide a feasible approach for in situ identifying different biospecies and monitoring physiological events at subcellular level.

Fluorescent cyclophanes and their applications

With the serendipitous discovery of crown ethers by Pedersen more than half a century ago and the subsequent introduction of host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry by Cram and Lehn, respectively, followed by the design and synthesis of wholly synthetic cyclophanes-in particular, fluorescent cyclophanes, having rich structural characteristics and functions-have been the focus of considerable research activity during the past few decades. Cyclophanes with remarkable emissive properties have been investigated continuously over the years and employed in numerous applications across the field of science and technology. In this Review, we feature the recent developments in the chemistry of fluorescent cyclophanes, along with their design and synthesis. Their host-guest chemistry and applications related to their structure and properties are highlighted.

Color-Tunable Supramolecular Luminescent Materials

Constructing multicolor photoluminescent materials with tunable properties is an attractive research objective on account of their abundant applications in materials science and biomedical engineering. By comparison with covalent synthesis, supramolecular chemistry has provided a more competitive and promising strategy for the production of organic materials and the regulation of their photophysical properties. By taking advantage of dynamic and reversible noncovalent bonding interactions, supramolecular strategies can, not only simplify the design and fabrication of organic materials, but can also endow them with dynamic reversibility and stimuli responsiveness, making it much easier to adjust the superstructures and properties of the materials. Occasionally, it is possible to introduce emergent properties into these materials, which are absent in their precursor compounds, broadening their potential applications. In an attempt to highlight the state-of-the-art noncovalent strategies available for the construction of smart luminescent materials, an overview of color-tunable materials is presented in this Review, with the emphasis being placed on the examples drawn from host-guest complexes, supramolecular assemblies and crystalline materials. The noncovalent synthesis of room-temperature phosphorescent materials and the modulation of their luminescent properties are also described. Finally, future directions and scientific challenges in the emergent field of color-tunable supramolecular emissive materials are discussed.

A host-guest strategy for converting the photodynamic agents from a singlet oxygen generator to a superoxide radical generator

Type-I photosensitizers (PSs) generate cytotoxic oxygen radicals by electron transfer even in a hypoxic environment. Nevertheless, the preparation of type-I PSs remains a challenge due to the competition of triplet–triplet energy transfer with O₂ (type-II process). In this work, we report an effective strategy for converting the conventional type-II PS to a type-I PS by host–guest complexation. Electron-rich pillar[5]arenes are used as an electron donor and macrocyclic host to produce a host–guest complex with the traditional electron-deficient type-II PS, an iodide BODIPY-based guest. The host–guest complexation promotes intermolecular electron transfer from the pillar[5]arene moiety to BODIPY and then to O₂ by the type-I process upon light-irradiation, leading to efficient generation of the superoxide radical (O₂⁻˙). The results of anti-tumor studies indicate that this supramolecular PS demonstrates high photodynamic therapy efficacy even under hypoxic conditions. This work provides an efficient method to prepare type-I PSs from existing type-II PSs by using a supramolecular strategy.

Assembly and Applications of Macrocyclic-Confinement-Derived Supramolecular Organic Luminescent Emissions from Cucurbiturils

Cucurbit[n]urils (Q[n]s or CB[n]s), as a classical of artificial organic macrocyclic hosts, were found to have excellent advantages in the fabricating of tunable and smart organic luminescent materials in aqueous media and the solid state with high emitting efficiency under the rigid pumpkin-shaped structure-derived macrocyclic-confinement effect in recent years. This review aims to give a systematically up-to-date overview of the Q[n]-based supramolecular organic luminescent emissions from the confined spaces triggered host-guest complexes, including the assembly fashions and the mechanisms of the macrocycle-based luminescent complexes, as well as their applications. Finally, challenges and outlook are provided. Since this class of Q[n]-based supramolecular organic luminescent emissions, which have essentially derived from the cavity-dependent confinement effect and the resulting assembly fashions, emerged only a few years ago, we hope this review will provide valuable information for the further development of macrocycle-based light-emitting materials and other related research fields.

ortho-Terphenylene Viologens with Through-Space Conjugation for Enhanced Photocatalytic Oxidative Coupling and Hydrogen Evolution

A series of novel ortho-terphenylene viologen derivatives (o-TPV²⁺) with through-space conjugation (TSC) via the combination of ortho-terphenylene skeletons with viologen structure is reported. Their optoelectronic properties can be adjusted by N-arylation or N-alkylation reactions. Compared with other viologen derivatives, o-TPV²⁺ not only exhibits strong photoluminescence but also retards the charge recombination process and stabilizes the diradical state without forming a quinoid structure due to the special TSC effect. Based on their special redox characteristics, o-TPV²⁺ was applied to the photocatalytic oxidative coupling of benzylamine with 96% yield. In addition, pTA-o-TPV²⁺ (tethered with p-toluic acid)-modified g-C₃N₄ was used for visible-light-driven hydrogen production for the first time, exceeding 15 times the rate over unmodified g-C₃N₄.

Ultramacrocyclization in water via external templation

Condensing a dihydrazide and each of a series of cationic bisaldehyde compounds bearing polymethylene chains in weakly acidic water produces either a macrocycle in a [1 + 1] manner or its dimer namely a [2]catenane, or their mixture. The product distribution is determined by the length of the bisaldehydes. Addition of cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) drives the catenane/macrocycle equilibria to the side of macrocycles, by forming ring-in-ring complexes with the latter. When the polymethylene unit of the bisaldehyde is replaced with a more rigid p-xylene linker, its self-assembly with the dihydrazide leads to quantitative formation of a [2]catenane. Upon addition of CB[8], the [2]catenane is transformed into an ultra-large macrocycle condensed in a [2 + 2] manner, which is encircled by two CB[8] rings. The framework of this macrocycle contains one hundred and two atoms, whose synthesis would be a formidable task without the external template CB[8]. Removal of CB[8] with a competitive guest leads to recovery of the [2]catenane.

CB[10]-driven self-assembly of a homotrimer from a symmetric organic dye: tunable multicolor fluorescence and higher solid-state stability than that of a CB[8]-included homodimer

A symmetric organic dye can form a highly stable homotrimer in the cavity of CB[10], which exhibits unique multicolour fluorescence different from that of the single molecule or its dimer.

A tunable full-color lanthanide noncovalent polymer based on cucurbituril-mediated supramolecular dimerization

The construction of lanthanide multicolor luminescent materials with tunable photoluminescence properties has been developed as one of the increasingly significant topics and shown inventive applications in miscellaneous fields. However, fabricating such materials based on synergistically assembly-induced emission rather than simple blending of different fluorescent dyes together still remains a challenge. Herein, we report a europium-based noncovalent polymer with tunable full-color emission, which is constructed from the 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid-bearing bromophenylpyridinium salt. This rationally designed bifunctional component can concurrently serve as a guest molecule and a chelating ligand to associate with cucurbit[8]uril and europium ions, thus leading to the formation of a trichromatic (red–green–blue, RGB) photoluminescent polypseudorotaxane-type noncovalent polymer in aqueous solution. Meanwhile, the full-color emission enclosed within the RGB color triangle could be readily produced by simply tuning the molar ratio of cucurbit[8]uril and europium ions. The lanthanide supramolecular polymer featuring tricolor emission, long lifetime, high photoluminescence efficiency and low cytotoxicity could be further applied in multicolor imaging in a cellular environment. These results provide a new and feasible strategy for the construction of full-color single lanthanide self-assembled nanoconstructs.

A lanthanide noncovalent polymer is constructed by integrating host–guest complexation and metal–ligand coordination, and can exhibit tunable trichromatic emission and multiple excited-state lifetimes under single wavelength excitation.

Study on the interactions between melamine-cored Schiff bases with cucurbit[n]urils of different sizes and its application in detecting silver ions

Three different complexes, TMeQ[6]-TBT, Q[7]-TBT, and Q[8]-TBT are constructed by three different cucurbiturils and synthesized by guest melamine-cored Schiff bases (TBT) through outer-surface interaction and host-guest interactions. TBT forms a TMeQ[6]-TBT complex with TMeQ[6] through outer-surface interaction, while Q[7]-TBT and Q[8]-TBT form complexes with Q[7,8] through host-guest interactions. Among them, Q[7]-TBT is selected as a UV detector for the detection of silver ions (Ag+). This work makes full use of the characteristics of each cucurbituril and melamine-cored Schiff base to construct a series of complexes and these are applied to metal detection.

Confining the Inner Space of Strained Carbon Nanorings

Strained aromatic macrocycles based on cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) are the shortest repeating units of armchair single-walled carbon nanotubes. Since the development of several new synthetic methodologies for accessing these structures, their properties have been extensively studied. Besides the fundamental interest in these novel molecular scaffolds, their application in the field of materials science is an ongoing topic of research. Most of the reported CPP-type macrocycles display strong binding toward fullerenes, due to the perfect match between the convex and concave π-surfaces of fullerenes and CPPs, respectively. Highly functionalized CPP derivatives capable of supramolecular binding with other molecules are rarely reported. The synthesis of highly functionalized [n]cyclo-2,7-pyrenylenes leads to CPP-type macrocycles with a defined cavity capable of binding non-fullerene guests with high association constants.

Structural Water Molecules Confined in Soft and Hard Nanocavities as Bright Color Emitters

Molecules confined in the nanocavity and nanointerface exhibit rich, unique physicochemical properties, e.g., the chromophore in the β-barrel can of green fluorescent protein (GFP) exhibits tunable bright colors. However, the physical origin of their photoluminescence (PL) emission remains elusive. To mimic the microenvironment of the GFP protein scaffold at the molecule level, two groups of nanocavities were created by molecule self-assembly using organic chromophores and by organic functionalization of mesoporous silica, respectively. We provide strong evidence that structural water molecules confined in these nanocavities are color emitters with a universal formula of {X⁺·(OH^-·H₂O)·(H₂O) _n-1}, in which X is hydrated protons (H₃O⁺) or protonated amino (NH₃ ⁺) groups as an anchoring point, and that the efficiency of PL is strongly dependent on the stability of the main emitter centers of the structural hydrated hydroxide complex (OH^-·H₂O), which is a key intermediate to mediate electron transfer dominated by proton transfer at confined nanospace. Further controlled experiments and combined characterizations by time-resolved steady-state and ultrafast transient optical spectroscopy unveil an unusual multichannel radiative and/or nonradiative mechanism dominated by quantum transient states with a distinctive character of topological excitation. The finding of this work underscores the pivotal role of structurally bound H₂O in regulating the PL efficiency of aggregation-induced emission luminogens and GFP.

Tunable White-Light Emissions of Azapyrene Derivatives with Cucurbit[n]uril Hosts in Aqueous Solution

Cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n])-mediated assembly of π-conjugated azapyrene derivatives with rigid aromatic rings as bridging units into optically tunable complexes is reported. Due to the hindrance of rotation of diazapyrene moieties and the enhancement of intramolecular charge transfer of chromophore guests within the cavity of the CB[8] host, color tuning including white-light emission was easily achieved by introducing CB[8] into the guest aqueous solution, therefore suggesting a feasible strategy for the creation of tunable white-light emission materials through CB[n]-based host-guest interactions.

A contorted nanographene shelter

Nanographenes have kindled considerable interest in the fields of materials science and supramolecular chemistry as a result of their unique self-assembling and optoelectronic properties. Encapsulating the contorted nanographenes inside artificial receptors, however, remains challenging. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a trigonal prismatic hexacationic cage, which has a large cavity and adopts a relatively flexible conformation. It serves as a receptor, not only for planar coronene, but also for contorted nanographene derivatives with diameters of approximately 15 Å and thicknesses of 7 Å. A comprehensive investigation of the host-guest interactions in the solid, solution and gaseous states by experimentation and theoretical calculations reveals collectively an induced-fit binding mechanism with high binding affinities between the cage and the nanographenes. Notably, the photostability of the nanographenes is improved significantly by the ultrafast deactivation of their excited states within the cage. Encapsulating the contorted nanographenes inside the cage provides a noncovalent strategy for regulating their photoreactivity.

A cucurbituril-pillararene ring-on-ring complex

A new type of non-intertwined ring-on-ring assembly was formed by the portal binding between a perfunctionalized polycationic pillar[5]arene and a cucurbit[10]uril, demonstrating a facile approach to solubilize a large macrocycle in water. Different binding behaviors towards guests were observed for the high-order complex, enriching the functional supramolecular systems.

Supramolecular Chemistry: Host-Guest Molecular Complexes

In recent times, researchers have emphasized practical approaches for capturing coordinated and selective guest entrap. The physisorbed nanoporous supramolecular complexes have been widely used to restrain various guest species on compact supporting surfaces. The host-guest (HG) interactions in two-dimensional (2D) permeable porous linkages are growing expeditiously due to their future applications in biocatalysis, separation technology, or nanoscale patterning. The different crystal-like nanoporous network has been acquired to enclose and trap guest molecules of various dimensions and contours. The host centers have been lumped together via noncovalent interactions (such as hydrogen bonds, van der Waals (vdW) interactions, or coordinate bonds). In this review article, we enlighten and elucidate recent progress in HG chemistry, explored via scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We summarize the synthesis, design, and characterization of typical HG structural design examined on various substrates, under ambient surroundings at the liquid-solid (LS) interface, or during ultrahigh vacuum (UHV). We emphasize isoreticular complexes, vibrant HG coordination, or hosts functional cavities responsive to the applied stimulus. Finally, we critically discuss the significant challenges in advancing this developing electrochemical field.

Confined Spaces in [n]Cyclo-2,7-pyrenylenes

A set of strained aromatic macrocycles based on [n]cyclo-2,7-(4,5,9,10-tetrahydro)pyrenylenes is presented with size-dependent photophysical properties. The K-region of pyrene was functionalized with ethylene glycol groups to decorate the outer rim and thereby confine the space inside the macrocycle. This confined space is especially pronounced for n=5, which leads to an internal binding of up to 8.0×104  m-1 between the ether-decorated [5]cyclo-2,7-pyrenylene and shape-complementary crown ether-cation complexes. Both the ether-decorated [n]cyclo-pyrenylenes as well as one of their host-guest complexes have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. In combination with computational methods the structural and thermodynamic reasons for the exceptionally strong binding have been elucidated. The presented rim confinement strategy makes cycloparaphenylenes an attractive supramolecular host family with a favorable, size-independent read-out signature and binding capabilities extending beyond fullerene guests.

Organic multicomponent microparticle libraries

Multimetallic nanostructures can be synthesized by integrating up to seven or eight metallic elements into a single nanoparticle, which represent a great advance in developing complex multicomponent nanoparticle libraries. Contrary, organic micro- and nanoparticles beyond three π-conjugated components have not been explored because of the diversity and structural complexity of molecular assemblies. Here, we report a library of microparticles composed of an arbitrary combination of four luminescent organic semiconductors. We demonstrate that the composition and emission color of each domain as well as its spatial distribution can be rationally modulated. Unary, binary, ternary, and quaternary microparticles are thus realized in a predictable manner based on the miscibility of the components, resulting in mixed-composition phases or alloyed or phase separated heterostructures. This work reports a simple yet available synthetic methodology for rational modulation of organic multicomponent microparticles with complex architectures, which can be used to direct the design of functional microparticles.

The synthesis of alloyed complex multicomponent micro- and nanoparticles composed of organic molecules is challenging. Here, the authors demonstrate a library of mixed composition organic microparticles in comprising up to four compounds in their structure.

Construction of organometallic trefoil knots and one-dimensional chains featuring half-sandwich Cp*Rh corner units and an abnormal zwitterion ligand

An abnormal flexible O-coordinated zwitterion ligand L shows self-adaptive conformation behaviour in chemical self-assembly. Two trefoil knots were obtained with C-shaped ligand L and two novel 1D chains were obtained with Z-shaped ligand L.
