Modulation of a μ-1,2-Peroxo Dicopper(II) Intermediate by Strong Interaction with Alkali Metal Ions

Fresh Impetus in the Chemistry of Calcium Peroxides

Redox-inactive metal ions are essential in modulating the reactivity of various oxygen-containing metal complexes and metalloenzymes, including photosystem II (PSII). The heart of this unique membrane-protein complex comprises the Mn4CaO5 cluster, in which the Ca2+ ion acts as a critical cofactor in the splitting of water in PSII. However, there is still a lack of studies involving Ca-based reactive oxygen species (ROS) systems, and the exact nature of the interaction between the Ca2+ center and ROS in PSII still generates intense debate. Here, harnessing a novel Ca-TEMPO complex supported by the β-diketiminate ligand to control the activation of O2, we report the isolation and structural characterization of hitherto elusive Ca peroxides, a homometallic Ca hydroperoxide and a heterometallic Ca/K peroxide. Our studies indicate that the presence of K+ cations is a key factor controlling the outcome of the oxygenation reaction of the model Ca-TEMPO complex. Combining experimental observations with computational investigations, we also propose a mechanistic rationalization for the reaction outcomes. The designed approach demonstrates metal-TEMPO complexes as a versatile platform for O2 activation and advances the understanding of Ca/ROS systems.

Copper-oxygen adducts: new trends in characterization and properties towards C-H activation

This review summarizes the latest discoveries in the field of C-H activation by copper monoxygenases and more particularly by their bioinspired systems. This work first describes the recent background on copper-containing enzymes along with additional interpretations about the nature of the active copper-oxygen intermediates. It then focuses on relevant examples of bioinorganic synthetic copper-oxygen intermediates according to their nuclearity (mono to polynuclear). This includes a detailed description of the spectroscopic features of these adducts as well as their reactivity towards the oxidation of recalcitrant Csp3 -H bonds. The last part is devoted to the significant expansion of heterogeneous catalytic systems based on copper-oxygen cores (i.e. within zeolite frameworks).

Appended Lewis Acids Enable Dioxygen Reactivity and Catalytic Oxidations with Ni(II)

We disclose a suite of Ni(II) complexes featuring secondary sphere Lewis acids of varied Lewis acidity and tether lengths. Several of these complexes feature atypical behavior of Ni(II): reactivity with O2 that occurs only in the presence of a tethered Lewis acid. In situ UV-vis spectroscopy revealed that, although adducts are stable at -40 °C, complexes containing 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (9-BBN) Lewis acids underwent irreversible oxidative deborylation when warmed to room temperature. We computationally and experimentally identified that oxidative instability of appended 9-BBN moieties can be mitigated using weaker Lewis acids such as pinacolborane (BPin). These insights enabled the realization of catalytic reactions: hydrogen atom abstraction from phenols and room temperature oxygen atom transfer to PPh3.

Counter-Anions Rendered Weak-Interactions Perturb the Stability of Tyrosinase-Mimicked Peroxo-Dicopper(II) Active Site: Unraveling Computational Indicators

It has been observed in literature that the stability of tyrosinase-mimicked μ-η2 :η2 -peroxo-dicopper(II) (P) can be perturbed in presence of counter-anions (CAs) such as PhCO2 - , CF3 SO3 - , TsO- and SbF6 - . In this work, we unravel computational indicators using density functional theory to screen and study the stability of P in experimentally-reported cases. These indicators are Gibbs energies, geometrical parameters such as distances and angles, independent gradient model based on Hirshfeld partition (IGMH) generated data, orbitals' overlap, and distortion-interaction (DI) energies. Our DFT computed Gibbs energies indicate that P is stable in case of PhCO2 - and TsO- . CF3 SO3 - allows P and its isoelectronic species bis-μ-oxo-dicopper (O) to coexist. SbF6 - shows that O is in excess. Our indicators reveal that the stability of P in case of PhCO2 - and TsO- is due to the better placing of P and its CA, thus leading to better interactions and overlap of orbitals. Other indicator displays that the plane of Cu2 O2 core in P is more bend in PhCO2 - and TsO- cases as compared to the plane in the other two cases. In addition, the IGMH-based indicator displays higher values in the case of PhCO2 - and TsO- than the other CAs.

Monoclinic BiVO₄ is one of the most promising photoanode materials for solar water splitting. The photoelectrochemical performance of a BiVO₄ photoanode could be significantly influenced by the noncovalent interactions of redox-inert metal cations at the photoanode-electrolyte interfaces, but this point has not been well investigated. In this work, we studied the Cs⁺-dependent surface reconstruction and passivation of BiVO₄ photoanodes. Owing to the "structure breaker" nature of Cs⁺, the Cs⁺ at the BiVO₄ photoanode-electrolyte interfaces participated in BiVO₄ surface photocorrosion to form a Cs⁺-doped bismuth vanadium oxide amorphous thin layer, which inhibited the continuous photocorrosion of BiVO₄ and promoted surface charge transfer and water oxidation. The resulting cocatalyst-free BiVO₄ photoanodes achieved 3.3 mA cm^-2 photocurrent for water oxidation. With the modification of FeOOH catalysts, the photocurrent at 1.23 V_RHE reached 5.1 mA cm^-2, and a steady photocurrent of 3.0 mA cm^-2 at 0.8 V_RHE was maintained for 30 h. This work provides new insights into the understanding of Cs⁺ chemistry and the effects of redox-inert cations at the electrode-electrolyte interfaces.

Altering Oxygen Binding by Redox-Inactive Metal Substitution to Control Catalytic Activity: Oxygen Reduction on Manganese Oxide Nanoparticles as a Model System

Establishing generic catalyst design principles by identifying structural features of materials that influence their performance will advance the rational engineering of new catalytic materials. In this study, by investigating metal-substituted manganese oxide (spinel) nanoparticles, Mn₃ O₄ :M (M=Sr, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu), we rationalize the dependence of the activity of Mn₃ O₄ :M for the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on the enthalpy of formation of the binary MO oxide, Δ_f H°(MO), and the Lewis acidity of the M²⁺ substituent. Incorporation of elements M with low Δ_f H°(MO) enhances the oxygen binding strength in Mn₃ O₄ :M, which affects its activity in ORR due to the established correlation between ORR activity and the binding energy of *O/*OH/*OOH species. Our work provides a perspective on the design of new compositions for oxygen electrocatalysis relying on the rational substitution/doping by redox-inactive elements.

Redox Modulatory Cu(II)-Baicalein Microflowers Prepared in One Step Effectively Promote Therapeutic Angiogenesis in Diabetic Mice

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated in multiple cellular processes, and an imbalance in redox homeostasis gives rise to diseases, therefore, reestablishing redox homeostasis is a way to cure. Here, copper-based metal-organic networks (Cu-MON) are generated by one-step reaction using anti-inflammatory and antioxidant baicalein as organic ligand and pro-angiogenic copper as metal ions. Phosphate buffered saline is required for triggering Cu-MON formation, and baicalein regulates the morphology and particle size of Cu-MON. Cu-MON are composed of Cu-baicalein complexes (82.08 wt%) and Cu₃ (PO₄ )₂ ·3H₂ O (17.92 wt%), thus exhibit a variable catalase-like activity against different H₂ O₂ levels due to the reversible change between Cu²⁺ /Cu¹⁺ /Cu⁰ species. Intramuscular injection of Cu-MON significantly increases blood flow of ischemic limb in diabetic mice, enhances the relative activities of redox-related enzymes in ischemic muscle, thus effectively ameliorating the oxidative damage. Taken together, through moderate and dynamic "precise homeostasis regulation of cells," Cu-MON can be an efficient therapeutic strategy for peripheral arterial disease with diabetic complications.

A Contrasting Effect of Acid in Electron Transfer, Oxygen Atom Transfer, and Hydrogen Atom Transfer Reactions of a Nickel(III) Complex

There have been many examples of the accelerating effects of acids in electron transfer (ET), oxygen atom transfer (OAT), and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions. Herein, we report a contrasting effect of acids in the ET, OAT, and HAT reactions of a nickel(III) complex, [Ni^III(PaPy₃*)]²⁺ (1) in acetone/CH₃CN (v/v 19:1). 1 was synthesized by reacting [Ni^II(PaPy₃*)]⁺ (2) with magic blue or iodosylbenzene in the absence or presence of triflic acid (HOTf), respectively. Sulfoxidation of thioanisole by 1 and H₂O occurred in the presence of HOTf, and the reaction rate increased proportionally with increasing concentration of HOTf ([HOTf]). The rate of ET from diacetylferrocene to 1 also increased linearly with increasing [HOTf]. In contrast, HAT from 9,10-dihydroanthracene (DHA) to 1 slowed down with increasing [HOTf], exhibiting an inversely proportional relation to [HOTf]. The accelerating effect of HOTf in the ET and OAT reactions was ascribed to the binding of H⁺ to the PaPy₃* ligand of 2; the one-electron reduction potential (E_red) of 1 was positively shifted with increasing [HOTf]. Such a positive shift in the E_red value resulted in accelerating the ET and OAT reactions that proceeded via the rate-determining ET step. On the other hand, the decelerating effect of HOTf on HAT from DHA to 1 resulted from the inhibition of proton transfer from DHA^•+ to 2 due to the binding of H⁺ to the PaPy₃* ligand of 2. The ET reactions of 1 in the absence and presence of HOTf were well analyzed in light of the Marcus theory of ET in comparison with the HAT reactions.

Peroxide-Selective Reduction of O2 at Redox-Inactive Rare-Earth(III) Triflates Generates an Ambiphilic Peroxide

Metal peroxides are key species involved in a range of critical biological and synthetic processes. Rare-earth (group III and the lanthanides; Sc, Y, La-Lu) peroxides have been implicated as reactive intermediates in catalysis; however, reactivity studies of isolated, structurally characterized rare-earth peroxides have been limited. Herein, we report the peroxide-selective (93-99% O₂^2-) reduction of dioxygen (O₂) at redox-inactive rare-earth triflates in methanol using a mild metallocene reductant, decamethylferrocene (Fc*). The first molecular praseodymium peroxide ([Pr^III₂(O₂^2-)(18C6)₂(EG)₂][OTf]₄; 18C6 = 18-crown-6, EG = ethylene glycol, ^-OTf = ^-O₃SCF₃; 2-Pr) was isolated and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and NMR spectroscopy. 2-Pr displays high thermal stability (120 °C, 50 mTorr), is protonated by mild organic acids [pK_a1(MeOH) = 5.09 ± 0.23], and engages in electrophilic (e.g., oxygen atom transfer) and nucleophilic (e.g., phosphate-ester cleavage) reactivity. Our mechanistic studies reveal that the rate of oxygen reduction is dictated by metal-ion accessibility, rather than Lewis acidity, and suggest new opportunities for differentiated reactivity of redox-inactive metal ions by leveraging weak metal-ligand binding events preceding electron transfer.

Antisymmetric Spin Exchange in a μ-1,2-Peroxodicopper(II) Complex with an Orthogonal Cu-O-O-Cu Arrangement and S = 1 Spin Ground State Characterized by THz-EPR

A unique type of Cu₂/O₂ adduct with orthogonal (close to 90°) Cu-O-O-Cu arrangement has been proposed for initial stages of O₂ binding at biological type III dicopper sites, and targeted ligand design has now allowed us to emulate such an adduct in a pyrazolate-based μ-η¹ :η¹-peroxodicopper(II) complex (2) with Cu-O-O-Cu torsion φ of 87°, coined ^⊥ P intermediate. Full characterization of 2, including X-ray diffraction (d _O-O = 1.452 Å) and Raman spectroscopy (ν̃_O-O = 807 cm^-1), completes a series of closely related Cu₂/O₂ intermediates featuring μ-η¹ :η¹-peroxodicopper(II) cores with φ ranging from 55° (A, cis-peroxo ^C P; Brinkmeier A.et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc.2021, 143, 10361) via 87° (2, ^⊥ P type) up to 104° (B, approaching trans-peroxo ^T P; Kindermann N.et al., Angew. Chem., Int. Ed.2015, 54, 1738). SQUID magnetometry revealed ferromagnetic interaction of the Cu^II ions and a triplet (S _t = 1) ground state in 2. Frequency-domain THz-EPR has been employed to quantitatively investigate the spin systems of 2 and B. Magnetic transitions within the triplet ground states confirmed their substantial zero-field splittings (ZFS) suggested by magnetometry. Formally forbidden triplet-to-singlet transitions at 56 (2) and 157 cm^-1 (B), which are in agreement with the exchange coupling strengths J _iso inferred from SQUID data, are reported for the first time for coupled dicopper(II) complexes. Rigorous analysis by spin-Hamiltonian-based simulations attributed the corresponding nonzero transition probabilities and the ZFS to substantial antisymmetric (Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya) exchange d and provided robust values and orientations for the d , J , and g tensors. These interactions can be correlated with the Cu-O-O-Cu geometries, revealing a linear increase of J _iso with the Cu-O-O-Cu torsion and a strong linear decrease with the Cu-O-O angle. Relevance of the ^⊥ P intermediate for O₂ activation at type III dicopper sites and a potential role of antisymmetric exchange in the concomitant intersystem crossing are proposed.
