Black Titanium-Oxo Clusters with Ultralow Band Gaps and Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Performance

Uncovering the role of free lanthanum (La3+) ions and La oligomer on the surface of La (oxy)hydroxide particles for phosphate removal

La (oxy)hydroxide-based materials have been recognized as promising adsorbents for aqueous phosphate (P) removal. However, comprehending the adsorption behavior of P onto La (oxy)hydroxide particles remains challenging, given the heterogeneous low-crystalline surface encompassing La oligomers and free La3+ ions. In this study, a hydrogen (H) bond capping method was developed to construct La (oxy)hydroxide oligomers (LHOs) to simulate the low-crystalline La on the surface of La (oxy)hydroxide particles. The P uptake capacity was compared among free La3+ ions, LHOs, and La nanoparticle (La-NP) with maximum capacities of 1967.3 ± 30.8 mg/g, 461.1 ± 53.7 mg/g and 62.5 ± 6.0 mg/g, respectively. The FT-IR, Raman, in situ-XRD and XPS deconvolution analyses revealed that the removal of P by free La3+ ions mainly involve the process of chemical precipitation to form LaPO4·0.5H2O. Conversely, the elimination of P by LHOs is primarily attributed to inner-sphere complexation and hydroxyl exchange effect between LaOOH and P. Based on this study, the free La3+ ions and La oligomers on the surface of La (oxy)hydroxide particles play a primary role in P adsorption. These results also suggest that the successively decreased adsorption capacity of La (oxy)hydroxide-based adsorbents in the continuously adsorption/desorption cycles might be due to the irreversible inactivation and recrystallization of free La3+ ions and La oligomers on the surface.

Giant Anisotropic Thermal Expansion Phase Transition of Silver Iodide Anionic Organic-Inorganic Hybrid

Hybrid metal halide materials with charming phase transition behaviors have attracted considerable attention. In former works, much attention has been focused on the phase transition triggered by the order-disorder or displacement motions of the organic component. However, manipulating the variation of the inorganic component to achieve the phase transition has rarely been reported. Herein, two novel organic-inorganic hybrid materials, [THPM]n[AgX2]n (THPM = 3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidin-1-ium, X = I for 1 and Br for 2) with the [AgX2]nn- anionic chain structure, were synthesized. At 293 K, the [AgX2]nn- chains in 1 were constructed by the tetramer units of Ag atoms, while that in 2 was assembled by the dimer structure. Upon heating to 355 K, owing to the variation of the metallophilic interaction between adjacent Ag atoms, a unique transformation process from tetramer to dimer in [AgI2]nn- chains of 1 can be detected and endow 1 with a giant anisotropic thermal expansion with linear strain of ∼7% and shear strain of ∼20%, which can be used as a mechanical actuator for switching. Alternatively, for 2, no phase transition process can be observed upon the temperature variation. This work provides an effective approach to design phase transition materials triggered by the inorganic part.

All-catecholate-stabilized black titanium-oxo clusters for efficient photothermal conversion

The controlled synthesis of titanium-oxo clusters (TOCs) completely stabilized by organic dye ligands with high stability and superior light absorption remains a significant challenge. In this study, we report the syntheses of three atomically precise catechol (Cat)-functionalized TOCs, [Ti2(Cat)2(OEgO)2(OEgOH)2] (Ti2), [Ti8O5(Cat)9(iPrO)4(iPrOH)2] (Ti8), and [Ti16O8(OH)8(Cat)20]·H2O·PhMe (Ti16), using a solvent-induced strategy (HOEgOH = ethylene glycol; iPrOH = isopropanol; PhMe = toluene). Interestingly, the TiO core of Ti16 is almost entirely enveloped by catechol ligands, making it the first all-catechol-protected high-nuclearity TOC. In contrast, Ti2 and Ti8 have four weakly coordinated ethylene glycol ligands and six weakly coordinated iPrOH ligands, respectively, in addition to the catechol ligands. Ti16 is visually evident in its distinctively black appearance, which belongs to black TOCs (B-TOCs) and exhibits an ultralow optical band gap. Furthermore, Ti16 displays exceptional stability in various media/environments, including exposure to air, solvents, and both acidic and alkaline aqueous solutions due to its comprehensive protection by catechol ligands and rich intra-cluster supramolecular interactions. Ti16 has superior photoelectric response qualities and photothermal conversion capabilities compared to Ti2 and Ti8 due to its ultralow optical band gap and remarkable stability. This discovery not only represents a huge step forward in the creation of all-catecholate-protected B-TOCs with ultralow optical band gaps and outstanding stability, but it also gives key valuable mechanistic insights into their photothermal/electric applications.

Structure and optical limiting effects of heterometallic Ag6@Ti12 and Ag8@Ti12 oxo clusters regulated by alkynyl ligands

Heterometallic Ag6@Ti12 and Ag8@Ti12 oxo clusters were prepared through a strategy of protecting polynuclear silver cores by a hollow Ti-O module. The introduction of alkyne ligands has shown significant influence on their structures and optical limiting effects.

Designed metal-organic π-clusters combining the aromaticity of the metal cluster and ligands for a third-order nonlinear optical response

The pivotal role of clusters and aromaticity in chemistry is undeniable, but there remains a gap in systematically understanding the aromaticity of metal-organic clusters. Herein, this article presents a novel metal-organic π-cluster, melding both metal-organic chemistry and aromaticity, to guide the construction of structurally stable Os-organic π-clusters. An in-depth analysis of these clusters reveals their bonding attributes, π-electronic composition, and origins of aromaticity, thereby confirming their unique metal-organic π-cluster properties. Furthermore, the Os5 cluster exhibits a promising third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) response, attributable to its narrow band gap and uniform electron/hole distribution, suggesting its potential as an optical switching material. This research introduces a fresh perspective on clusters, centered on delocalization, and broadens the domain of aromaticity studies. It also presents a novel method for designing efficient third-order NLO materials through consideration of the structure-activity relationship.

Structural Regulation and Transformation of Oxalate-Bridged Polyoxo-Titanium Nanoclusters: Intercluster Docking Strategy and Polyiodides Induced Rearrangement

Although significant progress has been made in the synthetic and structural chemistry of polyoxo-titanium clusters (PTCs), the rational regulation of their geometric and electronic configurations is rather difficult. Meanwhile, it is also challenging to induce their systematic structural transformation, thereby customizing their physicochemical properties. In this work, we illustrate the intercluster docking strategy, which utilizes oxalates as multidentate ligands to connect and regulate the modular assembly of polynuclear Ti-O subunits into nanoclusters Ti24(μ3-O)26(μ2-O)4(OiPr)34(Oxal) (PTC-361), Ti28(μ4-O)2(μ3-O)28(μ2-O)8(OtBu)22(PA)12(Oxal) (PTC-362), Ti10(μ3-O)6(OtBu)14(PA)6(Oxal)2(tBC)2 (PTC-363), and Ti24(μ3-O)20(μ2-O)12(PA)12(Oxal)2(Hoxal)8(PyA)8 (PTC-364) (H2Oxal = oxalic acid; HOiPr = isopropanol; HOtBu = t-butanol; H2tBC = 4-tert-butylcatechol; HPA = propionic acid; and HPyA = 2-picolinic acid). Furthermore, the stepwise addition of iodine gives rise to polyiodide I3- to assist the controllable structure transformation of PTC-361 to [Ti12(μ-O)15(OiPr)17]I3 (PTC-365) and even to [Ti24(μ2-O)2(μ3-O)30(OiPr)30](I3)2 (PTC-366) with increasing polyiodide content. Moreover, modification with 4-tert-butylcatecholate as light absorbent material on the surface layers of PTCs and polyiodide I3- incorporation in PTCs expand their light response to the visible region and reduce their highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gaps. This work successfully develops an intercluster docking strategy and gives precise modulation on the geometry of nanoclusters as well as the optimization of their desired properties.

Ligand-dependent structural diversity and optimizable CO2 chemical fixation activities of Cu-doped polyoxo-titanium clusters

Heterometallic oxo clusters have been attracting intensive interest due to their unique properties originating from the synergistic interactions between different components. Herein, we report the construction and catalytic applications of a family of copper-doped polyoxo-titanium clusters (Cu-PTCs) coordinated with different acetate derivative ligands. The solvothermal reactions of metal salts and trimethylacetic acid or 1,2-phenylenediacetic acid in ethanol produced Ti6Cu3(μ3-O)4(μ2-O)(OEt)16(L1)4 (L1 = trimethyl acetate, PTC-367) and H2Ti8Cu2Br2(μ4-O)2(μ2-O)4(OEt)20(L2)2 (L2 = 1,2-phenylenediacetate, PTC-368), respectively. When smaller acetic acid was introduced as a stabilizing ligand, higher nuclei H2Ti16Cu3(μ4-O)5(μ3-O)15(μ2-O)3(OiPr)18(Ac)8 (Ac = acetate, PTC-369) and H3Ti29Cu3(μ4-O)6(μ3-O)30(μ2-O)8(OiPr)17(Ac)20 (PTC-370) were prepared. The number of metal ions exposed on the surface of the four clusters changes due to variations in the steric hindrance of functionalizing ligands, and theoretically, so does their catalytic activity as Lewis acids. In light of this, we conducted a carbon dioxide cycloaddition reaction in an atmospheric environment and the four obtained compounds displayed increasing catalytic activities from PTC-367 to PTC-370. These results provide a feasible synthetic method for modulating the structures of Cu-doped titanium oxide materials and improving their catalytic activities.

Divalent Heterometal Doped Titanium-Oxide Cluster Polymers: Structures, Photoresponse, and Photocatalysis

Five cluster polymers based on heterometal-doped titanium-oxide cluster (TOC) monomers are reported. The monomers feature Ti10-oxide cluster cores and are connected to the divalent closed-shell heterometal anchors by salicylate ligands. The Sr2+, Ba2+, and Pb2+ dopants cause the monomers to bind head-to-head and generate linear chains, while the Ca2+ and Cd2+ lead to head-to-tail connections and zigzag chains. The cluster polymers are responsive to visible-light up to 565 nm and photo-catalytically active in both H2 evolution and CO2/epoxide cycloaddition reactions. The photo-absorption, photo-charge separation, and photocatalytic properties of the cluster polymers are dependent on the heterometal dopants in order Cd > Pb > Ba > Sr > Ca. Heterometals serve as the catalytic sites in the cluster polymers, which depending on the contribution of the pCB bottom, facilitate photo-charge separation and interfacial charge transfer, further enhancing catalytic activity. The tunable compositions and topologies of the cluster polymers shown herein may inspire the design and synthesis of more multidimensional functional metal-oxide cluster materials for a variety of applications in the future.

A Cut-to-Link Strategy for Cubane-Based Heterometallic Sulfide Clusters with Giant Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Response

Although the synthesis of low-dimensional metal sulfides by assembling cluster-based units is expected to promote the development of optical materials and models of enzyme active centers such as dinitrogenase, it is faced with limited assembly methodology. Herein we present a cut-to-link strategy to generate high-nuclearity assemblies, inspired by the formation of a Z-type dimer of the W-S-Cu analogues of P^N cluster through in situ release of active linkers. Four new compounds with structures based on the same {Tp*WS₃Cu₃} incomplete cubane-like units were obtained using varied combinations of mild reagents. Open-aperture Z-scan measurements demonstrated the highest-nuclearity complex has the largest nonlinear optical absorption coefficient among discrete cluster-based materials reported to date. This approach enables building high-nuclearity metal sulfide clusters through cluster-based building blocks and opens a way to the design and exploration of materials based on well-identified building blocks.

A Robust Molecular Porous Material for C2 H2 /CO2 Separation

A molecular porous material, MPM-2, comprised of cationic [Ni₂ (AlF₆ )(pzH)₈ (H₂ O)₂ ] and anionic [Ni₂ Al₂ F₁₁ (pzH)₈ (H₂ O)₂ ] complexes that generate a charge-assisted hydrogen-bonded network with pcu topology is reported. The packing in MPM-2 is sustained by multiple interionic hydrogen bonding interactions that afford ultramicroporous channels between dense layers of anionic units. MPM-2 is found to exhibit excellent stability in water (>1 year). Unlike most hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks which typically show poor stability in organic solvents, MPM-2 exhibited excellent stability with respect to various organic solvents for at least two days. MPM-2 is found to be permanently porous with gas sorption isotherms at 298 K revealing a strong affinity for C₂ H₂ over CO₂ thanks to a high (ΔQ_st )_AC [Q_st (C₂ H₂ ) - Q_st (CO₂ )] of 13.7 kJ mol^-1 at low coverage. Dynamic column breakthrough experiments on MPM-2 demonstrated the separation of C₂ H₂ from a 1:1 C₂ H₂ /CO₂ mixture at 298 K with effluent CO₂ purity of 99.995% and C₂ H₂ purity of >95% after temperature-programmed desorption. C-H···F interactions between C₂ H₂ molecules and F atoms of AlF₆ ^3- are found to enable high selectivity toward C₂ H₂ , as determined by density functional theory simulations.

Fine-Tuning Tridentate Ligands for the Construction of Nanotube-Based Boron Imidazolate Frameworks with High Chemical Stability

Two unusual nanotube-based boron imidazolate frameworks (BIF-134 and BIF-135) were synthesized by a dual-ligand synthetic strategy under solvothermal conditions. In the structure of BIF-134 ([Co(BH(2-mim)₃)(BTC)_1/3](HBH(2-mim)₃)_1/3(NMA); 2-mim = 2-methylimidazole, NMA = N-methylacetamide, and BTC = 1,3,5-benzene tricarboxylate), one part of boron imidazolate ligands participate in the structural skeleton coordination, while another part of boron imidazolate ligands act as guest molecules that are located between adjacent nanotubes, which enhance the stability of the framework by the host-guest interaction and the pore space partition effects. It was found to be highly stable in air, water, organic solvents, and a wide pH range (pH 0-12). However, in the structure of BIF-135 ([Zn(BH(2-mim)₃)(CHTC)_1/3]; CHTC = 1,3,5-cyclohexanetricarboxylate), all boron imidazolate ligands participate in the structural skeleton coordination; there is no boron imidazolate guest molecule in the pores. The topology of BIF-135 is similar to that of BIF-134 by replacing BTC with CHTC and replacing Co with Zn. Furthermore, the obtained BIFs exhibited third-order nonlinear optical properties and potential optical limiting applications demonstrated by reverse saturable absorption.

Precisely Tailoring Heterometallic Polyoxotitanium Clusters for the Efficient and Selective Photocatalytic Oxidation of Hydrocarbons

Photocatalysis is a promising yet challenging approach for the selective oxidation of hydrocarbons to valuable oxygenated chemicals with O₂ under mild conditions. In this work, we report an atomically precise material model to address this challenge. The key to our solution is the rational incorporation of Fe species into polyoxotitanium cluster to form a heterometallic Ti₄ Fe₁ cocrystal. This newly designed cocrystal cluster, which well governs the energy and charge transfer as evidenced by spectroscopic characterizations and theoretical calculations, enables the synergistic process involving C(sp³ )-H bond activation by photogenerated holes and further reactions by singlet oxygen (¹ O₂ ). Remarkably, the cocrystal Ti₄ Fe₁ cluster achieves efficient and selective oxidation of hydrocarbons (C₅ to C₁₆ ) into aldehydes and ketones with a conversion rate up to 12 860 μmol g^-1  h^-1 , 5 times higher than that of Fe-doped Ti₃ Fe₁ cluster. This work provides insights into photocatalyst design at atomic level enabling synergistic catalysis.

Postsynthetic Modification of NU-1000 for Designing a Polyoxometalate-Containing Nanocomposite with Enhanced Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Performance

For the advancement of laser technologies and optical engineering, various types of new inorganic and organic materials are emerging. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) reveal a promising use in nonlinear optics, given the presence of organic linkers, metal cluster nodes, and possible delocalization of π-electron systems. These properties can be further enhanced by the inclusion of solely inorganic materials such as polyoxometalates as prospective low-cost electron-acceptor species. In this study, a novel hybrid nanocomposite, namely, SiW₁₂@NU-1000 composed of SiW₁₂ (H₄SiW₁₂O₄₀) and Zr-based MOF (NU-1000), was assembled, completely characterized, and thoroughly investigated in terms of its nonlinear optical (NLO) performance. The third-order NLO behavior of the developed system was assessed by Z-scan measurements using a 532 nm laser. The effect of two-photon absorption and self-focusing was significant in both NU-1000 and SiW₁₂@NU-1000. Experimental studies suggested a much superior NLO performance of SiW₁₂@NU-1000 if compared to that of NU-1000, which can be assigned to the charge-energy transfer between SiW₁₂ and NU-1000. Negligible light scattering, good stability, and facile postsynthetic fabrication method can promote the applicability of the SiW₁₂@NU-1000 nanocomposite for various optoelectronic purposes. This research may thus open new horizons to improve and enhance the NLO performance of MOF-based materials through π-electron delocalization and compositing metal-organic networks with inorganic molecules as electron acceptors, paving the way for the generation of novel types of hybrid materials for prospective NLO applications.

Coordination-Delayed-Hydrolysis Method for the Synthesis and Structural Modulation of Titanium-Oxo Clusters

ConspectusAtomically precise titanium-oxo clusters (TOCs) are the structure and reactivity model compounds of technically important TiO₂ materials, which could help build structure-property relationships and achieve property modulation at the molecular level. However, the traditional formation of TOCs has relied on the poorly controllable hydrolysis of titanium alkoxide in the solvent for a long time, limiting the development of TOC structural chemistry to a great extent. In addition, easily hydrolyzable alkoxy groups would be still coordinated on the surface of the TOCs generated by this method, making the clusters sensitive and unstable to the moisture. To achieve controllable preparation of TOCs, we believe it is crucial to attenuate the hydrolysis of titanium ions in the formation process of a cluster. To this end, we have recently applied an effective coordination-delayed-hydrolysis (CDH) strategy for TOC synthesis, which provides powerful tools for tuning their structures.In this Account, at the beginning, a brief introduction to the coordination-delayed-hydrolysis strategy is supplied, and its predominant features for constructing novel TOCs are highlighted. In subsequent sections, we discuss how the applied chelating organic/inorganic ligands (named hydrolysis delayed ligands) influence the hydrolysis process of Ti⁴⁺ ions to form a large family of TOCs with various nuclearities and core structures. Various hydrolysis delayed ligands have been explored, ranging from common O-donor ligands (carboxylate, phenol, or sulfate) to rarely used N-donor ligands (pyrazole) or bifunctional O/N-donor ones (quinoline, oxime, or alkanolamine). Breakthroughs in the symmetry, configuration, and cluster nuclei of TOCs have been accordingly achieved. Then, we show that this CDH method can be used to tune the surface structure of TOCs by modifying functional organic ligands. As a result, the physicochemical properties of TOCs, especially optical band gaps, can be optimized, and their stability under ambient conditions is significantly improved. In addition, we illustrate that the reversible bonds between hydrolysis delayed ligands and Ti ions further allows us to introduce active heterometal ions or clusters upon or inside the Ti-O cores to prepare heterometallic TOCs with unprecedented structures and properties. In particular, noble metal (Ag ions or clusters) has been incorporated into Ti-O clusters for the first time. As a summary, the coordination-delayed-hydrolysis strategy has realized the controllable hydrolysis of Ti⁴⁺ ions to some extent, breaking through the limitations of traditional synthesis methods and producing fruitful results in the field of titanium-oxo clusters. It is believed that this CDH method would also be effective for synthesizing oxo clusters of other easily hydrolyzed metal ions (Al³⁺, Sn⁴⁺, In³⁺, etc.) to afford significant contribution for the cluster community.

Complete Inhibition of the Rotation in a Barrierless TICT Probe for Fluorescence-On Qualitative Analysis

Inhibition of twisting intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) is one of the most attractive methods for fluorescence-on analysis, whereas it remains enigmatic whether the fluorescence in a TICT-based probe could be thoroughly lightened. Here, for maximizing the fluorescence-on signal of the TICT-based probe, we develop a model by employing chemical reaction to directly cleave the linkage between the rotational electron donor and acceptor with a predisposed fluorescent signal close to zero. To validate this assumption, a nonfluorescent probe with barrierless rotation is successfully achieved by grafting acryloyl with -C═C- recognition sites onto coumarin, and 7-hydroxycoumarin with bright blue fluorescence could be released within 3 s upon probing KMnO₄ with an amount as low as 0.95 nM and 6.6 pg. We believe that the present strategy could not only deepen the insights of photochemistry but also facilitate the development of a theranostic drug delivery system, energy conversion, pollution control, and health risk reduction.
