Conductive and Ultrastable Covalent Organic Framework/Carbon Hybrid as an Ideal Electrocatalytic Platform

Atom-pair engineering of single-atom nanozyme for boosting peroxidase-like activity

Constructing atom-pair engineering and improving the activity of metal single-atom nanozyme (SAzyme) is significant but challenging. Herein, we design the atom-pair engineering of Zn-SA/CNCl SAzyme by simultaneously constructing Zn-N4 sites as catalytic sites and Zn-N4Cl1 sites as catalytic regulator. The Zn-N4Cl1 catalytic regulators effectively boost the peroxidase-like activities of Zn-N4 catalytic sites, resulting in a 346-fold, 1496-fold, and 133-fold increase in the maximal reaction velocity, the catalytic constant and the catalytic efficiency, compared to Zn-SA/CN SAzyme without the Zn-N4Cl1 catalytic regulator. The Zn-SA/CNCl SAzyme with excellent peroxidase-like activity effectively inhibits tumor cell growth in vitro and in vivo. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Zn-N4Cl1 catalytic regulators facilitate the adsorption of *H2O2 and re-exposure of Zn-N4 catalytic sites, and thus improve the reaction rate. This work provides a rational and effective strategy for improving the peroxidase-like activity of metal SAzyme by atom-pair engineering.

Tuning the Pyridine Units in Vinylene-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks Boosting 2e- Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The N-doped carbon materials are supposed to be the efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts with the undefined N-doped carbon ring groups. It is essential to well define the role of the nitrogen atoms of these carbon structures in active behavior. Even though, the covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with precise structures are well developed, but unable to exclude the polar linkages influence. This study presents a series of pyridine-containing COFs linked via nonpolar carbon-carbon double bonds (C = C). Their catalytic activity and selectivity for 2e- ORR are successfully modulated by locating the embedded pyridine nitrogen in the backbones through the linking modes of pyridine moieties within the frameworks. Such phenomena can be attributed to their different binding abilities toward O2, leading to the different binding strength of the intermediate OH* to the catalytic sites, also verified by the theoretical calculation. This work provides us a new insight to design high-efficiency ORR catalysts through the exact location of pyridine nitrogen.

One-Pot Synthesis of a Mixed-Valent Copper(I/II)-Coordinated Covalent Organic Framework Induced by γ-Ray Radiation

Metal-anchored covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as a class of significant derivatives of COFs, are widely used as heterogeneous catalysts in diverse chemical reactions. However, they are typically synthesized via post-treatment strategies, which often lead to the decline of COF crystallinity, decrease of porous properties, instability in catalytic performances, generation of additional chemical waste, and consumption of excess time and energy. In this work, we demonstrate an approach to construct a metal-functionalized COF via a one-pot method induced by γ-ray radiation. Specifically, copper-coordinated COF was in situ synthesized by irradiating a mixture of monomers and copper salt under ambient conditions. Interestingly, the initial Cu2+ ions were reduced to Cu+ ions by the radiation-generated reducing species, affording a unique mixed-valent copper(I/II)-coordinated COF. Additionally, the copper-coordinated COF displayed enhanced crystallinity and porous properties compared to those of the parent COF, displaying an opposite trend to the postsynthetic method. Notably, the introduced copper on the COF skeleton endowed the parent COF with catalytic ability. The resulting copper-coordinated COF exhibited remarkable catalytic performances in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol and maintained almost unchanged catalytic performance after five catalytic cycles.

Synergistic Modulating Interlayer Space and Electron-Transfer of Covalent Organic Frameworks for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an ideal template to construct high-efficiency catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their predictable properties. However, the closely parallel-stacking manner and lacking intramolecular electron transfer ability of COFs limit atomic utilization efficiency and intrinsic activity. Herein, COFs are constructed with large interlayer distances and enhanced electronic transfer ability by side-chain functionalization. Long chains with electron-donating features not only enlarge interlayer distance, but also narrow the bandgap. The resulting DPPS-COF displays higher electrochemical surface areas to provide more exposed active sites, despite <1/10 surface areas. DPPS-COF exhibits excellent electrocatalytic ORR activity with half-wave potential of 0.85 V, which is 30 and 60 mV positive than those of Pt/C and DPP-COF, and is the record among the reported COFs. DPPS-COF is employed as cathode electrocatalyst for zinc-air battery with a maximum power density of 185.2 mW cm-2, which is superior to Pt/C. Theoretical calculation further reveals that longer electronic-donating chains not only facilitate the formation of intermediate OOH* from O2, but also promote intermediates desorption , and thus leading to higher activity.

New Advances in Covalent Network Polymers via Dynamic Covalent Chemistry

Covalent network polymers, as materials composed of atoms interconnected by covalent bonds in a continuous network, are known for their thermal and chemical stability. Over the past two decades, these materials have undergone significant transformations, gaining properties such as malleability, environmental responsiveness, recyclability, crystallinity, and customizable porosity, enabled by the development and integration of dynamic covalent chemistry (DCvC). In this review, we explore the innovative realm of covalent network polymers by focusing on the recent advances achieved through the application of DCvC. We start by examining the history and fundamental principles of DCvC, detailing its inception and core concepts and noting its key role in reversible covalent bond formation. Then the reprocessability of covalent network polymers enabled by DCvC is thoroughly discussed, starting from the significant milestones that marked the evolution of these polymers and progressing to their current trends and applications. The influence of DCvC on the crystallinity of covalent network polymers is then reviewed, covering their bond diversity, synthesis techniques, and functionalities. In the concluding section, we address the current challenges faced in the field of covalent network polymers and speculates on potential future directions.

Heterogenization-Activated Zinc Telluride via Rectifying Interfacial Contact to Afford Synergistic Confinement-Adsorption-Catalysis for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The notorious shuttle effect and sluggish conversion kinetics of intermediate polysulfides (Li2S4, Li2S6, Li2S8) are severely hindered the large-scale development of Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Rectifying interface effect has been a solution to regulate the electron distribution of catalysts via interfacial charge exchange. Herein, a ZnTe-ZnO heterojunction encapsulated in nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon (ZnTe-O@NC) derived from metal-organic framework is fabricated. Theoretical calculations and experiments prove that the built-in electric field constructed at ZnTe-ZnO heterojunction via the rectifying interface contact, thus promoting the charge transfer as well as enhancing adsorption and conversion kinetics toward polysulfides, thereby stimulating the catalytic activity of the ZnTe. Meanwhile, the nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon acts as confinement substrate also enables fast electrons/ions transport, combining with ZnTe-ZnO heterojunction realize a synergistic confinement-adsorption-catalysis toward polysulfides. As a result, the Li-S batteries with S/ZnTe-O@NC electrodes exhibit an impressive rate capability (639.7 mAh g-1 at 3 C) and cycling performance (70% capacity retention at 1 C over 500 cycles). Even with a high sulfur loading, it still delivers a superior electrochemical performance. This work provides a novel perspective on designing highly catalytic materials to achieve synergistic confinement-adsorption-catalysis for high-performance Li-S batteries.

Ultrafine PtCo alloy by pyrolysis etching-confined pyrolysis for enhanced hydrogen evolution

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) has been widely used as a precursor to developing efficient PtCo alloy catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, traditional in-situ pyrolysis strategies involve complicated interface structure modulating processes between ZIF-67 and Pt precursors, challenging large-scale synthesis. Herein, a "pyrolysis etching-confined pyrolysis" approach is developed to design confined PtCo alloy in porous frameworks of onion carbon derived from ZIF-67. The confined PtCo alloy with Pt content of only 5.39 wt% exhibits a distinct HER activity in both acid (η10: 5 mV and Tafel: 9 mV dec-1) and basic (η10: 33 mV and Tafel: 51 mV dec-1) media and a drastic enhancement in stability. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the strong electronic interaction between Pt and Co allows favorable electron redistribution, which affords a favorable hydrogen spillover on PtCo alloy compared with that of pristine Pt(111). Operational electrochemical impedance spectroscopy demonstrates that the Faraday reaction process is facilitated under acidic conditions, while the transfer of intermediates through the electric double-layer region under alkaline conditions is accelerated. This work not only offers a universal route for high-performance Pt-based alloy catalysts with metal-organic framework (MOF) precursors but also provides experimental evidence for the role of the electric double layer in electrocatalysis reactions.

Constructing Highly Emissive Covalent Organic Frameworks for Fe3+ Ion Detection via Wall Function

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) represent a new type of crystalline porous polymers that possess pre-designed skeletons, uniform nanopores, and ordered π structure. These attributes make them well-suited for the design of light-emitting materials. However, the majority of COFs exhibits poor luminescence due to aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ), resulting from the strong interaction between adjacent layers. To break the limitation, the building units with three methoxy groups on the walls are used to construct TM-OMe-EBTHz-COF, which suppresses the ACQ effects to improve light-emitting activity of COF. The TM-OMe-EBTHz-COF exhibits a notable emission of yellow-green luminescence in the solid state, with a remarkably high absolute quantum yield of 21.1%. The methoxy groups and hydrazine linkage form three coordination sites, contributing to excellent performance in metal ions sensing. The TM-OMe-EBTHz-COF demonstrates high sensitivity and selectivity to Fe3+ ion. Importantly, the low detection limit is below 150 nanomolar, ranking it among the best-performing Fe3+ sensor systems.

Single-atom platinum with asymmetric coordination environment on fully conjugated covalent organic framework for efficient electrocatalysis

Two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and their derivatives have been widely applied as electrocatalysts owing to their unique nanoscale pore configurations, stable periodic structures, abundant coordination sites and high surface area. This work aims to construct a non-thermodynamically stable Pt-N2 coordination active site by electrochemically modifying platinum (Pt) single atoms into a fully conjugated 2D COF as conductive agent-free and pyrolysis-free electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In addition to maximizing atomic utilization, single-atom catalysts with definite structures can be used to investigate catalytic mechanisms and structure-activity relationships. In this work, in-situ characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that a nitrogen-rich graphene analogue COF not only exhibits a favorable metal-support effect for Pt, adjusting the binding energy between Pt sites to H* intermediates by forming unique Pt-N2 instead of the typical Pt-N4 coordination environment, but also enhances electron transport ability and structural stability, showing both conductivity and stability in acidic environments.

Selective anchoring of Pt NPs on covalent triazine-based frameworks via in situ derived bridging ligands for boosting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

The efficient and stable production of hydrogen (H2) through Pt-containing photocatalysts remains a great challenge. Herein, we develop an effective strategy to selectively and uniformly anchor Pt NPs (∼1.2 nm) on a covalent triazine-based framework photocatalyst via in situ derived bridging ligands. Compared to Pt/CTF-1, the obtained Pt/AT-CTF-1 exhibits a considerable photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 562.9 μmol g-1 h-1 under visible light irradiation. Additionally, the strong interaction between the Pt NPs and in situ derived bridging ligands provides remarkable stability to Pt/AT-CTF-1. Experimental investigations and photo/chemical characterization reveal the synergy of the in situ derived bridging ligands in Pt/AT-CTF-1, which can selectively anchor the Pt NPs with homogeneous sizes and efficiently improve the transmission of charge carriers. This work provides a new perspective toward stabilizing ultrasmall nanoclusters and facilitating electron transfer in photocatalytic H2 evolution materials.

Sequential Oxidation/Cyclization of Readily Available Imine Linkages to Access Benzoxazole-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks

Benzoxazole-linked covalent organic frameworks (BO-COFs), despite their exceptional chemical stability, are still in their infancy. This is primarily because the current prevalent methods require the use of special ortho-hydroxyl-substituted aromatic amines as monomers. Herein, we report an innovative strategy to access BO-COFs directly from imine-linked COFs (Im-COFs) without pre-embedded OH groups, using a two-step sequential oxidation/cyclization process. The two-step process included the oxidation of Im-COFs into amide-linked COFs, followed by a copper-catalyzed oxidative cyclization. Five representative BO-COFs were synthesized with retained crystallinity and high oxidization efficiency, offering the potential to convert a significant portion of Im-COFs into BO-COFs. The structural advantages of the newly designed BO-COFs were demonstrated through their application to photocatalytic organic transformations.

Single Ru Sites on Covalent Organic Framework-Coated Carbon Nanotubes for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with precisely controllable structures and highly ordered porosity possess great potential as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the catalytic performance of pristine COFs is limited by the poor active sites and low electron transfer. Herein, to address these issues, the conductive carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are coated by a defined structure RuBpy(H2 O)(OH)Cl2 in bipyridine-based COF (TpBpy). And this composite with single site Ru incorporated can be used as HER electrocatalyst in alkaline conditions. A series of crucial issues are carefully discussed through experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, such as the coordination structure of the atomically dispersion Ru ions, the catalytic mechanism of the embedded catalytic site, and the effect of COF and CNTs on the electrocatalytic properties. According to DFT calculations, the embedded single sites Ru act as catalytic sites for H2 generation. Benefitting from increasing the catalyst conductivity and the charge transfer, the as-prepared c-CNT-0.68@TpBpy-Ru shows an excellent HER overpotential of 112 mV at 10 mA cm-2 under alkaline conditions as well as an excellent durability up to 12 h, which is superior to that of most of the reported COFs electrocatalysts in alkaline solution.

Hexaazatriphenylene-Based Two-Dimensional Conductive Covalent Organic Framework with Anisotropic Charge Transfer

The development of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with efficient charge transport is of immense interest for applications in optoelectronic devices. To enhance COF charge transport properties, electroactive building blocks and dopants can be used to induce extended conduction channels. However, understanding their intricate interplay remains challenging. We designed and synthesized a tailor-made COF structure with electroactive hexaazatriphenylene (HAT) core units and planar dioxin (D) linkages, denoted as HD-COF. With the support of theoretical calculations, we found that the HAT units in the HD-COF induce strong, eclipsed π-π stacking. The unique stacking of HAT units and the weak in-plane conjugation of dioxin linkages leads to efficient anisotropic charge transport. We fabricated HD-COF films to minimize the grain boundary effect of bulk COFs, which resulted in enhanced conductivity. As a result, the HD-COF films showed an electrical conductivity as high as 1.25 S cm-1 after doping with tris(4-bromophenyl)ammoniumyl hexachloroantimonate.

D-Band Center Optimization of Edge-Rich Ultrathin RuZn Nanosheets With Moiré Superlattices for pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a promising way to produce pure and clean hydrogen. However, the preparation of efficient and economical catalysts for pH-universal HER remains a challenging but rewarding task. Herein, ultrathin RuZn nanosheets (NSs) with moiré superlattices and abundant edges are synthesized. The RuZn NSs with unique structure exhibit superb HER performance with overpotentials of 11, 13, and 29 mV to achieve 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH, 1 M PBS, and 0.5 M H2 SO4 , respectively, which is substantially lower than those of Ru NSs and RuZn NSs without moiré superlattices. Density functional theory investigations reveal that the charge transfer from Zn to Ru will lead the appropriate downshift of the d-band center of surface Ru atoms, thus accelerating hydrogen desorption from the Ru sites, lowering the dissociation energy barrier of water and greatly improving the HER performance. This work provides an effective design scheme for high-performance HER electrocatalysts over a wide pH range, and propose a general route to prepare Ru-based bimetallic nanosheets with moiré superlattices.

Cobalt-Porphyrin-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks with Donor-Acceptor Units as Photocatalysts for Carbon Dioxide Reduction

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as a promising platform for photocatalysts. Their crystalline porous nature allows comprehensive mechanistic studies of photocatalysis, which have revealed that their general photophysical parameters, such as light absorption ability, electronic band structure, and charge separation efficiency, can be conveniently tailored by structural modifications. However, further understanding of the relationship between structure-property-activity is required from the viewpoint of charge-carrier transport, because the charge-carrier property is closely related to alleviation of the excitonic effect. In the present study, COFs composed of a fixed cobalt (Co) porphyrin (Por) centered tetraamine as an acceptor unit with differently conjugated di-carbaldehyde based donor units, such as benzodithiophene (BDT), thienothiophene (TT), or phenyl (TA), were synthesized to form Co-Por-BDT, Co-Por-TT, or Co-Por-TA, respectively. Their photocatalytic activity for reducing carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide was in the order of Co-Por-BDT>Co-Por-TT>Co-Por-TA. The results indicated that the excitonic effect, associated with their charge-carrier densities and π-conjugation lengths, was a significant factor in photocatalysis performance.

A Thiophene Backbone Enables Two-Dimensional Poly(arylene vinylene)s with High Charge Carrier Mobility

Linear conjugated polymers have attracted significant attention in organic electronics in recent decades. However, despite intrachain π-delocalization, interchain hopping is their transport bottleneck. In contrast, two-dimensional (2D) conjugated polymers, as represented by 2D π-conjugated covalent organic frameworks (2D c-COFs), can provide multiple conjugated strands to enhance the delocalization of charge carriers in space. Herein, we demonstrate the first example of thiophene-based 2D poly(arylene vinylene)s (PAVs, 2DPAV-BDT-BT and 2DPAV-BDT-BP, BDT=benzodithiophene, BT=bithiophene, BP=biphenyl) via Knoevenagel polycondensation. Compared with 2DPAV-BDT-BP, the fully thiophene-based 2DPAV-BDT-BT exhibits enhanced planarity and π-delocalization with a small band gap (1.62 eV) and large electronic band dispersion, as revealed by the optical absorption and density functional calculations. Remarkably, temperature-dependent terahertz spectroscopy discloses a unique band-like transport and outstanding room-temperature charge mobility for 2DPAV-BDT-BT (65 cm2  V-1  s-1 ), which far exceeds that of the linear PAVs, 2DPAV-BDT-BP, and the reported 2D c-COFs in the powder form. This work highlights the great potential of thiophene-based 2D PAVs as candidates for high-performance opto-electronics.
