Engineering Single-Atom Electrocatalysts for Enhancing Kinetics of Acidic Volmer Reaction

Iridium-Based Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction Electrocatalysts

The hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells (HEMFCs) are promising but lack of high-performance anode hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) electrocatalysts. The platinum group metals (PGMs) have the HOR activity in alkaline medium two to three orders of magnitude lower than those in acid, leading to the high required PGMs amount on anode to achieve high HEMFC performance. The mechanism study demonstrates the hydrogen binding energy of the catalyst determines the alkaline HOR kinetics, and the adsorbed OH and water on the catalyst surface promotes HOR. Iridium (Ir) has a unique advantage for alkaline HOR due to its similar hydrogen binding energy to Pt and enhanced adsorption of OH. However, the HOR activity of Ir/C is still unsatisfied in practical HEMFC applications. Further fine tuning the adsorption of the intermediate on Ir-based catalysts is of great significance to improve their alkaline HOR activity, which can be reasonably realized by structure design and composition regulation. In this concept, we address the current understanding about the alkaline HOR mechanism and summarize recent advances of Ir-based electrocatalysts with enhanced alkaline HOR activity. We also discuss the perspectives and challenges on Ir-based electrocatalysts in the future.

A feasible strategy for designing cytochrome P450-mimic sandwich-like single-atom nanozymes toward electrochemical CO2 conversion

Carbon dioxide electroreduction (CO2ER) presents a promising strategy for environmentally friendly CO2 utilization due to its low energy consumption. Single-atom nanozymes (SANs), amalgamating the benefits of single-atom catalysts and nanozymes, have become a hot topic in catalysis. Inspired by the intricate structure of cytochrome P450, we designed 81 sandwich-like SANs using Group-VIII transition metals (TMN4-S-TM'N4) and evaluated their performance in CO2ER using density functional theory (DFT). Our investigation revealed that most SANs display superior catalytic activity and improved specific product selectivity in comparison to the Cu (211) surface. Notably, IrN4-S-TMN4 (TM = Co, Rh, Pd) exhibited selective CO2 reduction to CO with remarkable limiting potentials (UL) of -0.11, -0.07, and -0.09 V, respectively, demonstrating potential as artificial CO dehydrogenases. Furthermore, RuN4-S-RuN4 exhibited formate dehydrogenase-like activity, resulting in selective production of HCOOH at a UL of -0.10 V. Machine learning analysis elucidated that the exceptional activity and selectivity of these SANs stemmed from precise modulation of electron density on sulfur atoms, achieved by varying transition metals in the subsurface. Our research not only identifies exceptional SANs for CO2ER but also provides insights into innovative methods for regulating non-bonding interactions and achieving sustainable CO2 conversion.

Spontaneous Deposition of Single Platinum Atoms on Anatase TiO2 for Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Single-atom (SA) decoration has emerged as a frontier in catalysis due to its unique characteristics. Recently, decorated Pt single atoms on titania have shown promise in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In this work, we demonstrate that Pt SAs can spontaneously deposit on the surface, driven by electrostatic forces; the key is to determine the golden pH and surface potential. We conducted a comprehensive investigation into the influence of the pH of the deposition precursor on the spontaneous adsorption of Pt SAs onto TiO2 nanosheets (TiNSs). We introduced a straightforward pH-dependent and charge-dependent strategy for the solid electrostatic anchoring of Pt SAs on TiO2. Furthermore, we established that the level of Pt loading can be controlled by adjusting the precursor pH. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high-angle annular dark-field imaging scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) were used to evaluate the Pt SA-decorated samples. Photocatalytic hydrogen production activity was assessed under ultraviolet (UV) (365 nm) irradiation. Notably, we found that at a pH of 8, slightly below the measured point of zero charge (PZC), a unique mixture of Pt clusters and single atoms was deposited on the surface of TiNSs. This unique composition significantly improved hydrogen production, resulting in ∼3.7 mL of hydrogen generated after 8 h of UV exposure by only 10 mg of the Pt-decorated TiNS (with Pt loadings of 0.12 at. %), which is ∼300 times higher than the undecorated TiNS.

Constant Potential Thermodynamic Integration for Obtaining the Free Energy Profile of Electrochemical Reaction

In this work, we advanced an efficient free energy sampling method based on constrained ab initio molecular dynamics (cAIMD) with a fully explicit solvent layer to depict the electrochemical reaction process at constant surface charge density, named the "Constant-Potential Thermodynamic Integration (CPTI)" method. For automatically adjusting surface charge density at different states, we built an "on-the-fly" procedure which is capable of managing all the necessary steps during cAIMD simulations, including the system pre-equilibrium, surface charge density updating, and force sampling. We applied it to predict the potential-dependent free energy profiles of CO2 adsorption on a single-atom catalyst. The results show that our method can not only account for changes in electrostatic potential energy associated with potential but also consider the potential-induced solvation effects. Our approach enables the accurate simulation of electrochemical environment by presenting the complete solid-liquid interface and efficient computation of electrocatalytic reaction energetics based on a robust potential descriptor.

Fundamental Understanding of Hydrogen Evolution Reaction on Zinc Anode Surface: A First-Principles Study

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has become a key factor affecting the cycling stability of aqueous Zn-ion batteries, while the corresponding fundamental issues involving HER are still unclear. Herein, the reaction mechanisms of HER on various crystalline surfaces have been investigated by first-principle calculations based on density functional theory. It is found that the Volmer step is the rate-limiting step of HER on the Zn (002) and (100) surfaces, while, the reaction rates of HER on the Zn (101), (102) and (103) surfaces are determined by the Tafel step. Moreover, the correlation between HER activity and the generalized coordination number ([Formula: see text]) of Zn at the surfaces has been revealed. The relatively weaker HER activity on Zn (002) surface can be attributed to the higher [Formula: see text] of surface Zn atom. The atomically uneven Zn (002) surface shows significantly higher HER activity than the flat Zn (002) surface as the [Formula: see text] of the surface Zn atom is lowered. The [Formula: see text] of surface Zn atom is proposed as a key descriptor of HER activity. Tuning the [Formula: see text] of surface Zn atom would be a vital strategy to inhibit HER on the Zn anode surface based on the presented theoretical studies. Furthermore, this work provides a theoretical basis for the in-depth understanding of HER on the Zn surface.

Modeling Interfacial Dynamics on Single Atom Electrocatalysts: Explicit Solvation and Potential Dependence

ConspectusSingle atom electrocatalysts, with noble metal-free composition, maximal atom efficiency, and exceptional reactivity toward various energy and environmental applications, have become a research hot spot in the recent decade. Their simplicity and the isolated nature of the atomic structure of their active site have also made them an ideal model catalyst system for studying reaction mechanisms and activity trends. However, the state of the single atom active sites during electrochemical reactions may not be as simple as is usually assumed. To the contrary, the single atom electrocatalysts have been reported to be under greater influence from interfacial dynamics, with solvent and electrolyte ions perpetually interacting with the electrified active center under an applied electrode potential. These complexities render the activity trends and reaction mechanisms derived from simplistic models dubious.In this Account, with a few popular single atom electrocatalysis systems, we show how the change in electrochemical potential induces nontrivial variation in the free energy profile of elemental electrochemical reaction steps, demonstrate how the active centers with different electronic structure features can induce different solvation structures at the interface even for the same reaction intermediate of the simplest electrochemical reaction, and discuss the implication of the complexities on the kinetics and thermodynamics of the reaction system to better address the activity and selectivity trends. We also venture into more intriguing interfacial phenomena, such as alternative reaction pathways and intermediates that are favored and stabilized by solvation and polarization effects, long-range interfacial dynamics across the region far beyond the contact layer, and the dynamic activation or deactivation of single atom sites under operation conditions. We show the necessity of including realistic aspects (explicit solvent, electrolyte, and electrode potential) into the model to correctly capture the physics and chemistry at the electrochemical interface and to understand the reaction mechanisms and reactivity trends. We also demonstrate how the popular simplistic design principles fail and how they can be revised by including the kinetics and interfacial factors in the model. All of these rich dynamics and chemistry would remain hidden or overlooked otherwise. We believe that the complexity at an electrochemical interface is not a curse but a blessing in that it enables deeper understanding and finer control of the potential-dependent free energy landscape of electrochemical reactions, which opens up new dimensions for further design and optimization of single atom electrocatalysts and beyond. Limitations of current methods and challenges faced by the theoretical and experimental communities are discussed, along with the possible solutions awaiting development in the future.

Realistic Modeling of the Electrocatalytic Process at Complex Solid-Liquid Interface

The rational design of electrocatalysis has emerged as one of the most thriving means for mitigating energy and environmental crises. The key to this effort is the understanding of the complex electrochemical interface, wherein the electrode potential as well as various internal factors such as H-bond network, adsorbate coverage, and dynamic behavior of the interface collectively contribute to the electrocatalytic activity and selectivity. In this context, the authors have reviewed recent theoretical advances, and especially, the contributions to modeling the realistic electrocatalytic processes at complex electrochemical interfaces,  and illustrated the challenges and fundamental problems in this field. Specifically, the significance of the inclusion of explicit solvation and electrode potential as well as the strategies toward the design of highly efficient electrocatalysts are discussed. The structure-activity relationships and their dynamic responses to the environment and catalytic functionality under working conditions are illustrated to be crucial factors for understanding the complexed interface and the electrocatalytic activities. It is hoped that this review can help spark new research passion and ultimately bring a step closer to a realistic and systematic modeling method for electrocatalysis.

Electric Double Layer Effects in Electrocatalysis: Insights from Ab Initio Simulation and Hierarchical Continuum Modeling

Structures of the electric double layer (EDL) at electrocatalytic interfaces, which are modulated by the material properties, the electrolyte characteristics (e.g., the pH, the types and concentrations of ions), and the electrode potential, play crucial roles in the reaction kinetics. Understanding the EDL effects in electrocatalysis has attracted substantial research interest in recent years. However, the intrinsic relationships between the specific EDL structures and electrocatalytic kinetics remain poorly understood, especially on the atomic scale. In this Perspective, we briefly review the recent advances in deciphering the EDL effects mainly in hydrogen and oxygen electrocatalysis through a multiscale approach, spanning from the atomistic scale simulated by ab initio methods to the macroscale by a hierarchical approach. We highlight the importance of resolving the local reaction environment, especially the local hydrogen bond network, in understanding EDL effects. Finally, some of the remaining challenges are outlined, and an outlook for future developments in these exciting frontiers is provided.
