High-Entropy Laminates with High Ion Conductivities for High-Power All-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Neuron-Like Silicone Nanofilaments@Montmorillonite Nanofillers of PEO-Based Solid-State Electrolytes for Lithium Metal Batteries with Wide Operation Temperature

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) are promising to accelerate commercialization of solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs). Nonetheless, this is hindered by the CSEs' limited ion conductivity at room temperature. Here, we propose design, synthesis, and application of the bioinspired neuron-like nanofillers for PEO-based CSEs. The neuron-like superhydrophobic nanofillers are synthesized by controllably grafting silicone nanofilaments onto montmorillonite nanosheets. Compared to various reported fillers, the nanofillers can greatly improve ionic conductivity (4.9×10-4 S cm-1, 30 °C), Li+ transference number (0.63), oxidation stability (5.3 V) and mechanical properties of the PEO-based CSEs because of the following facts. The distinctive neuron-like structure and the resulting synaptic-like connections establish numerous long-distance continuous channels over various directions in the PEO-based CSEs for fast and uniform Li+ transport. Consequently, the assembled SSLMBs with the CSEs and LiFePO4 or NCM811 cathodes display superior cycling stability over a wide temperature range of 50 °C to 0 °C. Surprisingly, the pouch batteries with the large-scale prepared CSEs kept working after being repeatedly bent, folded, cut or even punched in air. We believe that design of neuron-like nanofillers is a viable approach to produce CSEs with high room temperature ionic conductivity for SSLMBs.

High-Entropy Transition Metal Phosphorus Trichalcogenides for Rapid Sodium Ion Diffusion

High-entropy strategies are regarded as a powerful means to enhance performance in energy storage fields. The improved properties are invariably ascribed to entropy stabilization or synergistic cocktail effect. Therefore, the manifested properties in such multicomponent materials are usually unpredictable. Elucidating the precise correlations between atomic structures and properties remains a challenge in high-entropy materials (HEMs). Herein, atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy annular dark field (STEM-ADF) imaging and four dimensions (4D)-STEM are combined to directly visualize atomic-scale structural and electric information in high-entropy FeMnNiVZnPS3. Aperiodic stacking is found in FeMnNiVZnPS3 accompanied by high-density strain soliton boundaries (SSBs). Theoretical calculation suggests that the formation of such structures is attributed to the imbalanced stress of distinct metal-sulfur bonds in FeMnNiVZnPS3. Interestingly, the electric field concentrates along the two sides of SSBs and gradually diminishes toward the two-dimensional (2D) plane to generate a unique electric field gradient, strongly promoting the ion-diffusion rate. Accordingly, high-entropy FeMnNiVZnPS3 demonstrates superior ion-diffusion coefficients of 10-9.7-10-8.3 cm2 s-1 and high-rate performance (311.5 mAh g-1 at 30 A g-1). This work provides an alternative way for the atomic-scale understanding and design of sophisticated HEMs, paving the way for property engineering in multi-component materials.

Disentangling Competitive and Synergistic Chemical Reactivities During the Seeded Growth of High-Entropy Alloys on High-Entropy Metal Sulfide Nanoparticles

The seeded growth of one type of nanoparticle on the surface of another is foundational to synthesizing many multifunctional nanostructures. High-entropy nanoparticles that randomly incorporate five or more elements offer enhanced properties due to synergistic interactions. Incorporating high-entropy nanoparticles into seeded growth platforms is essential for merging their unique properties with the functional enhancements that arise from particle-particle interactions. However, the complex compositions of high-entropy materials complicate the seeded growth process due to competing particle growth and chemical reactivity pathways. Here, we design and synthesize a 36-member nanoparticle library to identify and disentangle these competitive interactions, ultimately defining chemical characteristics that underpin the seeded growth of high-entropy alloys on high-entropy metal sulfide nanoparticles. As a model system, we focus on (Cu,Zn,Co,In,Ga)S-SnPdPtRhIr, which combines a high-entropy metal sulfide semiconductor with a high-entropy alloy catalyst. We study the seeded growth of all possible pairwise combinations of Sn, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ir, and SnPdPtRhIr on the metal sulfides Cu1.8S, ZnS, Co9S8, CuInS2, CuGaS2, and (Cu,Zn,Co,In,Ga)S, which have comparable morphologies and sizes. Through these studies, we uncover unexpected chemical reactivities, including cation exchange, redox reactions, and diffusion. Reaction temperature, threshold reduction potentials, metal/sulfide chemical reactivity, and the relative strengths of the various bonds that could be formed during particle growth emerge as the primary factors that underpin seeded growth. Finally, we disentangle these competitive and synergistic chemical reactivities to generate a reactivity map that provides practical guidelines for achieving seeded growth in compositionally complex systems.

Molten Guest-Mediated Metal-Organic Frameworks Featuring Multi-Modal Supramolecular Interaction Sites for Flame-Retardant Superionic Conductor in All-Solid-State Batteries

The development of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) with outstanding comprehensive performance is currently a critical challenge for achieving high energy density and safer solid-state batteries (SSBs). In this study, a strategy of nano-confined in situ solidification is proposed to create a novel category of molten guest-mediated metal-organic frameworks, named MGM-MOFs. By embedding the newly developed molten crystalline organic electrolyte (ML20) into the nanocages of anionic MOF-OH, MGM-MOF-OH, characterized by multi-modal supramolecular interaction sites and continuous negative electrostatic environments within nano-channels, is achieved. These nanochannels promote ion transport through the successive hopping of Li+ between neighbored negative electrostatic environments and suppress anion movement through the chemical constraint of the hydroxyl-functionalized pore wall. This results in remarkable Li+ conductivity of 7.1 × 10-4 S cm-1 and high Li+ transference number of 0.81. Leveraging these advantages, the SSBs assembled with MGM-MOF-OH exhibit impressive cycle stability and a high specific energy density of 410.5 Wh kganode + cathode + electrolyte -1 under constrained conditions and various working temperatures. Unlike flammable traditional MOFs, MGM-MOF-OH demonstrates high robustness under various harsh conditions, including ignition, high voltage, and extended to humidity.

Multimodal Engineering of Catalytic Interfaces Confers Multi-Site Metal-Organic Framework for Internal Preconcentration and Accelerating Redox Kinetics in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The development of highly efficient catalysts to address the shuttle effect and sluggish redox kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) remains a formidable challenge. In this study, a series of multi-site catalytic metal-organic frameworks (MSC-MOFs) were elaborated through multimodal molecular engineering to regulate both the reactant diffusion and catalysis processes. MSC-MOFs were crafted with nanocages featuring collaborative specific adsorption/catalytic interfaces formed by exposed mixed-valence metal sites and surrounding adsorption sites. This design facilitates internal preconcentration, a coadsorption mechanism, and continuous efficient catalytic conversion toward polysulfides concurrently. Leveraging these attributes, LSBs with an MSC-MOF-Ti catalytic interlayer demonstrated a 62 % improvement in discharge capacity and cycling stability. This resulted in achieving a high areal capacity (11.57 mAh cm-2 ) at a high sulfur loading (9.32 mg cm-2 ) under lean electrolyte conditions, along with a pouch cell exhibiting an ultra-high gravimetric energy density of 350.8 Wh kg-1 . Lastly, this work introduces a universal strategy for the development of a new class of efficient catalytic MOFs, promoting SRR and suppressing the shuttle effect at the molecular level. The findings shed light on the design of advanced porous catalytic materials for application in high-energy LSBs.
