Electron-Delocalization-Stabilized Photoelectrocatalytic Coupling of Methane by NiO-Polyoxometalate Sub-1 nm Heterostructures

Quasi-homogeneous photoelectrochemical organic transformations for tunable products and 100% conversion ratio

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) organic transformation at the anode coupled with cathodic H2 generation is a potentially rewarding strategy for efficient solar energy utilization. Nevertheless, achieving the full conversion of organic substrates with exceptional product selectivity remains a formidable hurdle in the context of heterogeneous catalysis at the solid/liquid interface. Here, we put forward a quasi-homogeneous catalysis concept by using the reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as ·OH, H2O2 and SO4•-, as a charge transfer mediator instead of direct heterogeneous catalysis at the solid/liquid interface. In the context of glycerol oxidation, all ROS exhibited a preference for first-order reaction kinetics. These ROS, however, showcased distinct oxidation mechanisms, offering a range of advantages such as ∼ 100 % conversion ratios and the flexibility to tune the resulting products. Glycerol oxidative formic acid with Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 81.2 % was realized by the H2O2 and ·OH, while SO4•- was preferably for glycerol conversion to C3 products like glyceraldehyde and dihydroxyacetone with a total FE of about 80 %. Strikingly, the oxidative coupling of methane to ethanol was successfully achieved in our quasi-homogeneous system, yielding a remarkable production rate of 12.27 μmol h-1 and an impressive selectivity of 92.7 %. This study is anticipated to pave the way for novel approaches in steering solar-driven organic conversions by manipulating ROS to attain desired products and conversion ratios.

High-entropy-perovskite subnanowires for photoelectrocatalytic coupling of methane to acetic acid

The incorporation of multiple immiscible metals in high-entropy oxides can create the unconventional coordination environment of catalytic active sites, while the high formation temperature of high-entropy oxides results in bulk materials with low specific surface areas. Here we develop the high-entropy LaMnO3-type perovskite-polyoxometalate subnanowire heterostructures with periodically aligned high-entropy LaMnO3 oxides and polyoxometalate under a significantly reduced temperature of 100 oC, which is much lower than the temperature required by state-of-the-art calcination methods for synthesizing high-entropy oxides. The high-entropy LaMnO3-polyoxometalate subnanowires exhibit excellent catalytic activity for the photoelectrochemical coupling of methane into acetic acid under mild conditions (1 bar, 25 oC), with a high productivity (up to 4.45 mmol g‒1cat h‒1) and selectivity ( > 99%). Due to the electron delocalization at the subnanometer scale, the contiguous active sites of high-entropy LaMnO3 and polyoxometalate in the heterostructure can efficiently activate C - H bonds and stabilize the resulted *COOH intermediates, which benefits the in situ coupling of *CH3 and *COOH into acetic acid.

Electron Delocalization and Transfer Across Polyoxometalates-Based Subnanomaterials in Catalytic Reactions

Due to their identical building blocks and high surface-to-volume ratio, subnanomaterials exhibit significant properties compared to their bulk nanomaterial counterparts. The interactions between these building blocks can result in either equal or unequal sharing of electrons, leading to electron transfer in heterojunctions or electron delocalization within symmetric structures. Clusters, possessing electronic properties akin to atoms, can serve as reservoirs of electrons to stabilize crucial intermediates in catalytic reactions. This perspective provides a novel understanding of well-defined subnanomaterials with distinct architectures, such as cluster-based constructions and co-assembled heterojunctions, emphasizing the relationship between electronic structures and catalytic properties. The objective is to provide novel perspectives on the realm of subnanomaterials and cluster-based architectures.

Single Dispersion of Fe(H2O)2-Based Polyoxometalate on Polymeric Carbon Nitride for Biomimetic CH4 Photooxidation

Direct methane conversion to value-added oxygenates under mild conditions with in-depth mechanism investigation has attracted wide interest. Inspired by methane monooxygenase, the K9Na2Fe(H2O)2{[γ-SiW9O34Fe(H2O)]}2·25H2O polyoxometalate (Fe-POM) with well-defined Fe(H2O)2 sites is synthesized to clarify the key role of Fe species and their microenvironment toward CH4 photooxidation. The Fe-POM can efficiently drive the conversion of CH4 to HCOOH with a yield of 1570.0 µmol gPOM -1 and 95.8% selectivity at ambient conditions, much superior to that of [Fe(H2O)SiW11O39]5- with Fe(H2O) active site, [Fe2SiW10O38(OH)]2 14- and [P8W48O184Fe16(OH)28(H2O)4]20- with multinuclear Fe-OH-Fe active sites. Single-dispersion of Fe-POM on polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) is facilely achieved to provide single-cluster functionalized PCN with well-defined Fe(H2O)2 site, the HCOOH yield can be improved to 5981.3 µmol gPOM -1. Systemic investigations demonstrate that the (WO)4-Fe(H2O)2 can supply Fe═O active center for C-H activation via forming (WO)4-Fea-Ot···CH4 intermediate, similar to that for CH4 oxidation in the monooxygenase. This work highlights a promising and facile strategy for single dispersion of ≈1-2 Å metal center with precise coordination microenvironment by uniformly anchoring nanoscale molecular clusters, which provides a well-defined model for in-depth mechanism research.

Electron-Delocalization Across High Surface Entropy Sub-1 nm Nanobelts Toward Enhanced Electrocatalytic Urea Oxidation

Integration of inherently incompatible elements into a single sublattice, resulting in the formation of monophasic metal oxide, holds great scientific promise; it unveils that the overlooked surface entropy in subnanometer materials can thermodynamically facilitate the formation of homogeneous single-phase structures. Here a facile approach is proposed for synthesizing multimetallic oxide subnanometer nanobelts (MMO-PMA SNBs) by harnessing the potential of phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) clusters to capture inorganic nuclei and inhibiting their subsequent growth in solvothermal reactions. Experimental and theoretical analyses show that PMA in MMO-PMA SNBs not only aids subnanometer structure formation but also induces in situ modifications to catalytic sites. The electron transfer from PMA, coupled with the loss of elemental identity of transition metals, leads to electron delocalization, jointly activating the reaction sites. The unique structure makes pentametallic oxide (PMO-PMA SNBs) achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a low potential of 1.34 V and remain stable for 24 h at 10 mA cm-2 on urea oxidation reaction (UOR). The exceptional UOR catalytic activity suggests a potential for utilizing multimetallic subnanometer nanostructures in energy conversion and environmental remediation.

Bismuth Telluride Supported Sub-1 nm Polyoxometalate Cluster for High-Efficiency Thermoelectric Energy Conversion

Size plays a crucial role in chemistry and material science. Subnanometer polyoxometalate (POM) clusters have gained attention in various fields, but their use in thermoelectrics is still limited. To address this issue, we propose the POM clusters as an effective second phase to enhance the thermoelectric properties of Bi0.4Sb1.6Te3. Thanks to their subnanometer size, POM clusters improve electrical transport behavior through the superposition of atomic orbitals and the interfacial scattering effect. Furthermore, their ultrasmall size strongly reduces thermal conductivity. Consequently, the introduction of a mere 0.1 mol % of POM into the Bi0.4Sb1.6Te3 matrix realizes a state-of-the-art zT value of 1.46 at 348 K, a 45% enhancement over Bi0.4Sb1.6Te3 (1.01), along with a maximum thermoelectric-conversion efficiency of the integrated module of 6.0%. The enhancement of carrier mobility and the suppression of thermal conduction achieved by introducing the subnanometer clusters hold promise for various applications, such as electronic devices and thermal management.
