Bifunctional Ag@Pd-Ag Nanocubes for Highly Sensitive Monitoring of Catalytic Reactions by Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Spinous Au@Ag Bimetallic Nanowires: Synthesis and In Situ Monitoring SERS of Plasmonic Catalysis

In situ monitoring of reactant transformations at metal catalyst surfaces and/or interfaces, combined with the identification of intermediate species and products, is vital for elucidating catalytic processes and behaviors. We developed innovative spinous Au@Ag nanowires (NWs) with a bimetallic structure and dense alloy protrusions, demonstrating both catalytic activity and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) capabilities, thereby facilitating in situ SERS tracking of reactions. The spinous Au@Ag NWs exhibit sharp spikes on their surface, providing a large number of catalytically active sites. They demonstrate outstanding sensitivity, signal reproducibility, and homogeneity when detecting representative dye molecules like crystal violet. Furthermore, the spinous Au@Ag NWs exhibit outstanding catalytic performance, enhancing the separation and movement of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. This research offers important insights for the design of multifunctional SERS substrates and paves the way for new opportunities in the in situ monitoring of catalytic processes.

Facile Synthesis of Ru Nanoboxes with a Hexagonal Close-Packed Structure by Templating with Ag Nanocubes and Their Catalytic Properties

Noble-metal nanoboxes offer an attractive form of nanomaterials for catalytic applications owing to their open structure and highly efficient use of atoms. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of Ag-Ru core-shell nanocubes and then Ru nanoboxes with a hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure, as well as evaluation of their catalytic activity toward a model hydrogenation reaction. By adding a solution of Ru(acac)3 in ethylene glycol (EG) dropwise to a suspension of silver nanocubes in EG at 170 °C, Ru atoms are generated and deposited onto the entire surface of a nanocube. As the volume of the RuIII precursor is increased, Ru atoms are also produced through a galvanic replacement reaction, generating Ag-Ru nanocubes with a hollow interior. The released Ag+ ions are then reduced by EG and deposited back onto the nanocubes. By selectively etching away the remaining Ag with aqueous HNO3 , the as-obtained Ag-Ru nanocubes are transformed into Ru nanoboxes, whose walls are characterized by an hcp structure and an ultrathin thickness of a few nanometers. Finally, we evaluated the catalytic properties of the Ru nanoboxes with two different wall thicknesses by using a model hydrogenation reaction; both samples showed excellent performance.

Facile synthesis of gold nanocages with silver nanocubes templates dual metal effects enabled SERS imaging and catalytic reduction

Silver (Ag) nanomaterials featuring a cubic shape particularly represent supreme class of advance nanomaterials. This work explored a new precursor and its effect on morphological features of silver (Ag) nanocubes (NCs) serving as sacrificial templates for facile synthesis of gold NCs. The AgNCs were initially prepared utilizing sodium thiosulphate (Na2S2O3) as relatively stable S2- producing species along with a soft etchant source KCl. The effects of different potassium halides were evaluated to grasp control over seed mediated growth of Ag nanocubes. Taking the advantages of dual metallic properties, Ag@4MBA@AuNCs nanostructure was synthesized using 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4MBA) as a Raman reporter molecule. This nanostructure showed 1010-times enhancement in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signal, leading to a highly sensitive imaging probe for the detection of even three breast cancer cells (MCF-7 cells) in vitro. Subsequently, the oxidative nanopeeling well accompanied by incorporation of Au/Ag alloy nanoparticles on AuNCs corona assembly was achieved, which facilitated the catalytic reduction of toxic nitrophenol to eco-friendly aminophenol. Such sophisticated and engineered nanoassemblies possess broad applications in bioanalysis.

Galvanic Replacement Reaction: Enabling the Creation of Active Catalytic Structures

The galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) is recognized as a redox process where one metal undergoes oxidation by the ions of another metal possessing a higher reduction potential. This reaction takes place at the interface between a substrate and a solution containing metal ions. Utilizing metal or metal oxide as sacrificial templates enables the synthesis of metallic nanoparticles, oxide-metal composites, and mixed oxides through GRR. Growing evidence showed that GRR has a direct impact on surface structures and properties. This has generated significant interest in catalysis and opened up new horizons for the application of GRR in energy and chemical transformations. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the synthetic strategies utilizing GRR for the creation of catalytically active structures. It discusses the formation of alloys, intermetallic compounds, single atom alloys, metal-oxide composites, and mixed metal oxides with diverse nanostructures. Additionally, GRR serves as a postsynthesis method to modulate metal-oxide interfaces through the replacement of oxide domains. The review also outlines potential future directions in this field.

Bimetallic core-shell nanocrystals: opportunities and challenges

With mastery over the colloidal synthesis of monometallic nanocrystals, a combination of two distinct metals with intricate architectures has emerged as a new direction of innovation. Among the diverse architectures, the one with a core-shell structure has attracted the most scientific endeavors owing to its merits of high controllability and variability. Along with the new hopes arising from the addition of a shell composed of a different metal, there comes unexpected complications for the surface composition, hindering both structural understanding and application performance. In this Focus article, we present a brief overview of the opportunities provided by the bimetallic core-shell nanocrystals, followed by a discussion of the technical challenge to elucidate the true composition of the outermost surface. Some of the promising solutions are then highlighted as well, aiming to inspire future efforts toward this frontier of research.

Preventing the Galvanic Replacement Reaction toward Unconventional Bimetallic Core-Shell Nanostructures

A bimetallic core-shell nanostructure is a versatile platform for achieving intriguing optical and catalytic properties. For a long time, this core-shell nanostructure has been limited to ones with noble metal cores. Otherwise, a galvanic replacement reaction easily occurs, leading to hollow nanostructures or completely disintegrated ones. In the past few years, great efforts have been devoted to preventing the galvanic replacement reaction, thus creating an unconventional class of core-shell nanostructures, each containing a less-stable-metal core and a noble metal shell. These new nanostructures have been demonstrated to show unique optical and catalytic properties. In this work, we first briefly summarize the strategies for synthesizing this type of unconventional core-shell nanostructures, such as the delicately designed thermodynamic control and kinetic control methods. Then, we discuss the effects of the core-shell nanostructure on the stabilization of the core nanocrystals and the emerging optical and catalytic properties. The use of the nanostructure for creating hollow/porous nanostructures is also discussed. At the end of this review, we discuss the remaining challenges associated with this unique core-shell nanostructure and provide our perspectives on the future development of the field.

Material design, development, and trend for surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful and non-invasive spectroscopic technique that can provide rich and specific chemical fingerprint information for various target molecules through effective SERS substrates. In view of the strong dependence of the SERS signals on the properties of the SERS substrates, design, exploration, and construction of novel SERS-active nanomaterials with low cost and excellent performance as the SERS substrates have always been the foundation and the top priority for the development and application of the SERS technology. This review specifically focuses on the extensive progress made in the SERS-active nanomaterials and their enhancement mechanism since the first discovery of SERS on the nanostructured plasmonic metal substrates. The design principles, unique functions, and influencing factors on the SERS signals of different types of SERS-active nanomaterials are highlighted, and insight into their future challenge and development trends is also suggested. It is highly expected that this review could benefit a complete understanding of the research status of the SERS-active nanomaterials and arouse the research enthusiasm for them, leading to further development and wider application of the SERS technology.

Silver Nanocubes: From Serendipity to Mechanistic Understanding, Rational Synthesis, and Niche Applications

Silver has long been interwoven into human history, and its uses have evolved from currency and jewelry to medicine, information technology, catalysis, and electronics. Within the last century, the development of nanomaterials has further solidified the importance of this element. Despite this long history, there was essentially no mechanistic understanding or experimental control of silver nanocrystal synthesis until about two decades ago. Here we aim to provide an account of the history and development of the colloidal synthesis of silver nanocubes, as well as some of their major applications. We begin with a description of the first accidental synthesis of silver nanocubes that spurred subsequent investigations into each of the individual components of the protocol, revealing piece by piece parts of the mechanistic puzzle. This is followed by a discussion of the various obstacles inherent to the original method alongside mechanistic details developed to optimize the synthetic protocol. Finally, we discuss a range of applications enabled by the plasmonic and catalytic properties of silver nanocubes, including localized surface plasmon resonance, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, metamaterials, and ethylene epoxidation, as well as further derivatization and development of size, shape, composition, and related properties.

Active Site Engineering on Plasmonic Nanostructures for Efficient Photocatalysis

Plasmonic nanostructures have shown immense potential in photocatalysis because of their distinct photochemical properties associated with tunable photoresponses and strong light-matter interactions. The introduction of highly active sites is essential to fully exploit the potential of plasmonic nanostructures in photocatalysis, considering the inferior intrinsic activities of typical plasmonic metals. This review focuses on active site-engineered plasmonic nanostructures with enhanced photocatalytic performance, wherein the active sites are classified into four types (i.e., metallic sites, defect sites, ligand-grafted sites, and interface sites). The synergy between active sites and plasmonic nanostructures in photocatalysis is discussed in detail after briefly introducing the material synthesis and characterization methods. Active sites can promote the coupling of solar energy harvested by plasmonic metal to catalytic reactions in the form of local electromagnetic fields, hot carriers, and photothermal heating. Moreover, efficient energy coupling potentially regulates the reaction pathway by facilitating the excited state formation of reactants, changing the status of active sites, and creating additional active sites using photoexcited plasmonic metals. Afterward, the application of active site-engineered plasmonic nanostructures in emerging photocatalytic reactions is summarized. Finally, a summary and perspective of the existing challenges and future opportunities are presented. This review aims to deliver some insights into plasmonic photocatalysis from the perspective of active sites, expediting the discovery of high-performance plasmonic photocatalysts.

Design and Synthesis of SERS Materials for In Vivo Molecular Imaging and Biosensing

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a feasible and ultra-sensitive method for biomedical imaging and disease diagnosis. SERS is widely applied to in vivo imaging due to the development of functional nanoparticles encoded by Raman active molecules (SERS nanoprobes) and improvements in instruments. Herein, the recent developments in SERS active materials and their in vivo imaging and biosensing applications are overviewed. Various SERS substrates that have been successfully used for in vivo imaging are described. Then, the applications of SERS imaging in cancer detection and in vivo intraoperative guidance are summarized. The role of highly sensitive SERS biosensors in guiding the detection and prevention of diseases is discussed in detail. Moreover, its role in the identification and resection of microtumors and as a diagnostic and therapeutic platform is also reviewed. Finally, the progress and challenges associated with SERS active materials, equipment, and clinical translation are described. The present evidence suggests that SERS could be applied in clinical practice in the future.

Plasmon-driven catalytic reactions in optoplasmonic sandwich hybrid structure

As an interesting phenomenon in the field of surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), the plasmon-driven catalytic reaction (PDSC) induced by plasmonic hot electrons has great value in the research of novel properties of surface plasmons and accuracy of SERS applications. In this work, an optoplasmonic sandwich hybrid structure is proposed for studying PDSC of p-aminothiophenol (PATP) molecules, which is composed of Au film, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) nanoparticles, zeolithic imidazolate (ZIF-8), and single S i O ₂ microsphere (Au f i l m@M O F s@S i O ₂). In order to analyze the novel, to the best of our knowledge, phenomenon of the PDSC in this micro-nano structure, the hot electron generation in the MOF without the plasmonic core is carried out by combining the plasmonic enhancement of gold film with the light concentration of microspheres. Experimental data show that the PDSC reactions is dependent on the size of the MOFs nanoparticle and the size of the S i O ₂ microsphere, which is confirmed by the electromagnetic field simulation of the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD). Our work not only strengthens the understanding of surface plasmon in optoplasmonic hybrid structures but also has broad application prospects in the SERS and plasmon-driven catalytic fields.

A Metallic Niobium Nitride with Open Nanocavities for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

The construction of open hot-spot structures that facilitate the entry of analytes is crucial for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Here, metallic niobium nitride (NbN) three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical networks with open nanocavity structure are first found to exhibit a strong visible-light localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect and extraordinary surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance. The unique nanocavity structure allows easy entry of molecules, promoting the utilization of electromagnetic hot spots. The NbN substrate has a lowest detection limit of 1.0 × 10^-12 M and a Raman enhancement factor (EF) of 1.4 × 10⁸ for contaminants. Furthermore, the NbN hierarchical networks possess outstanding environmental durability, high signal reproducibility, and detection universality. The remarkable SERS sensitivity of the NbN substrate can be attributed to the joint effect of LSPR and interfacial charge transport (CT).

In Situ Surface Restraint-Induced Synthesis of Transition-Metal Nitride Ultrathin Nanocrystals as Ultrasensitive SERS Substrate with Ultrahigh Durability

It is a major challenge to synthesize crystalline transition-metal nitride (TMN) ultrathin nanocrystals due to their harsh reaction conditions. Herein, we report that highly crystalline tungsten nitride (W₂N, WN, W₃N₄, W₂N₃) nanocrystals with small size and excellent dispersibility are prepared by a mild and general in situ surface restraint-induced growth method. These ultrafine tungsten nitride nanocrystals are immobilized in ultrathin carbon layers, forming an interesting hybrid nanobelt structure. The hybrid WN/C nanobelts exhibit a strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect, including a lowest detection limit of 1 × 10^-12 M and a Raman enhancement factor of 6.5 × 10⁸ comparable to noble metals, which may be one of the best records for non-noble metal SERS substrates. Moreover, they even can maintain the SERS performance in a variety of harsh environments, showing outstanding corrosion resistance, radiation resistance, and oxidation resistance, which is not available on traditional noble metal and semiconductor SERS substrates. A synergistic Raman enhancement mechanism of LSPR and interface charge transfer is found in the carbon-coated tungsten nitride substrate. A microfluidic SERS channel integrating the enrichment and detection of trace substances is constructed with the WN/C nanobelt, which realizes high-throughput dynamic SERS analysis.

Molybdenum Nitride Porous Prisms with a Strong Plasmon Resonance Effect in the Visible Region for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

In surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection, the structure of the Raman-scattering substrate is critical to the sensitivity and stability of the detector. Herein, molybdenum nitride (MoN) porous structures with a well-defined hexagonal prism shape were synthesized via a precursor nitriding route. As a typical metallic transition-metal nitride (TMN), these molybdenum nitride porous hexagonal prisms exhibit a rare strong SPR effect in the visible region, with a resonance peak centered at 534 nm. Benefiting from the strong SPR effect and their huge surface area and porosity, these MoN porous hexagonal prisms exhibit surface-enhanced Raman scattering effects comparable to those of noble metals, with a Raman enhancement factor of 5.5 × 10⁶. More importantly, these MoN SERS substrates exhibit ultrahigh chemical stabilities that noble metal and semiconductor substrates do not possess, which can prevent corrosion by strong acids, alkalis, and high-temperature oxidation.

Tuning Reaction Pathways of Electrochemical Conversion of CO2 by Growing Pd Shells on Ag Nanocubes

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂RR) has been studied on Ag, Pd, Ag@Pd_1-2L nanocubes using a combination of in situ characterization and density functional theory calculations. By manipulating the deposition and diffusion rates of Pd atoms on Ag nanocubes, Ag@Pd core-shell nanocubes with a shell thickness of 1-2 atomic layers have been successfully synthesized for CO₂RR. Pd nanocubes produce CO with high selectivity due to the transformation of Pd to Pd hydride (PdH) during CO₂RR. In contrast, PdH formation becomes more difficult in Ag@Pd_1-2L core-shell nanocubes, which inhibits CO production from the *HOCO intermediate and thus tunes the reaction pathway toward HCOOH. Ag nanocubes exhibit high selectivity toward H₂, and there is no phase transition during CO₂RR. The results demonstrate that the CO₂RR reaction pathways can be manipulated through engineering the surface structure of Pd-based catalysts by allowing or preventing the formation of PdH.

Moving MoO2/C Nanospheres with the Functions of Enrichment and Sensing for Online-High-Throughput SERS Detection

The development of online surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection methods is crucial to achieving high-throughput efficiency. Herein, a non-noble-metal moving substrate that integrates the functions of enrichment and sensing is developed for the microfluidic online-high-throughput detection of pollutants. The lowest limit of detection of 1 × 10^-12 M and a Raman enhancement factor of 6.3 × 10⁸ are obtained on the nanospheres. In a single detection channel, the analysis of 20 samples is achieved within 5 min, and the relative standard deviation of the signals is less than 6.8%. Compared with static SERS detection of fixed substrates, this dynamic SERS detection method greatly reduces the contamination memory effect of the analyte residue, enabling it to perform the sequential quantitative detection of samples with large concentration differences. Moreover, the current online SERS platform realizes the rapid quantitative detection of multicomponent samples.

Surface lattice engineering for fine-tuned spatial configuration of nanocrystals

Hybrid nanocrystals combining different properties together are important multifunctional materials that underpin further development in catalysis, energy storage, et al., and they are often constructed using heterogeneous seeded growth. Their spatial configuration (shape, composition, and dimension) is primarily determined by the heterogeneous deposition process which depends on the lattice mismatch between deposited material and seed. Precise control of nanocrystals spatial configuration is crucial to applications, but suffers from the limited tunability of lattice mismatch. Here, we demonstrate that surface lattice engineering can be used to break this bottleneck. Surface lattices of various Au nanocrystal seeds are fine-tuned using this strategy regardless of their shape, size, and crystalline structure, creating adjustable lattice mismatch for subsequent growth of other metals; hence, diverse hybrid nanocrystals with fine-tuned spatial configuration can be synthesized. This study may pave a general approach for rationally designing and constructing target nanocrystals including metal, semiconductor, and oxide.

δ-MoN Yolk Microspheres with Ultrathin Nanosheets for a Wide-Spectrum, Sensitive, and Durable Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrate

Facing the complex environment of on-site detection, the development of active substrates with wide-spectrum surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity is essential. Herein, we report on the low temperature and reproducible synthesis of plasmonic δ-MoN yolk microspheres by in situ-nitriding amorphous MoO₂ microspheres at 500 °C and 1 atm. The yolk-structured δ-MoN exhibits strong and wide-spectrum surface plasmon resonance and SERS effects and can perform highly selective detection for probes with different absorption wavelengths under excitation of 532, 633, and 785 nm lasers, with a limitation of 10^-11 M and an enhanced factor of 3.6 × 10⁷. Moreover, the plasmonic δ-MoN yolk microspheres have high environmental durability, which can maintain high sensitivity in strong acid and alkaline solutions.

Recent advances in plasmon-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for catalytic reactions on bifunctional metallic nanostructures

Metallic nanostructures exhibit superior catalytic performance for diverse chemical reactions and the in-depth understanding of reaction mechanisms requires versatile characterization methods. Plasmon-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (PERS), including surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS), and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), appears as a powerful technique to characterize the Raman fingerprint information of surface species with high chemical sensitivity and spatial resolution. To expand the range of catalytic reactions studied by PERS, catalytically active metals are integrated with plasmonic metals to produce bifunctional metallic nanostructures. In this minireview, we discuss the recent advances in PERS techniques to probe the chemical reactions catalysed by bifunctional metallic nanostructures. First, we introduce different architectures of these dual-functionality nanostructures. We then highlight the recent works using PERS to investigate important catalytic reactions as well as the electronic and catalytic properties of these nanostructures. Finally, we provide some perspectives for future PERS studies in this field.

In Situ SERS Monitoring of the Plasmon-Driven Catalytic Reaction by Using Single Ag@Au Nanowires as Substrates

Single nanowires (NWs), as a kind of new surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates, have received extensive concern owing to their distinctive properties and distinct advantages. In this contribution, single Ag nanowires (AgNWs) and single Au-coated AgNWs (Ag@AuNWs) were fabricated by the laser-assisted pulling method and the galvanic replacement reaction, respectively. The prepared single Ag@AuNWs show both high SERS activity and catalytic activity through in situ monitoring and assessing the plasmon-driven surface-catalytic reaction of 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP) dimerizing to 4,4'-dimercaptoazobenzene and the reduction reaction of 4-NTP to para-aminothiophenol, respectively. It was found that the intensity of the Raman peak was affected greatly by the laser power, and the Raman peak could still be observed at 0.05% power under mild conditions (633 nm wavelength) in this single nanowire system. From the Raman spectrum, the SERS enhancement factor (EF) of 5.4 × 10⁴ can be obtained, and the EF value of 1.3 × 10⁹ can be reached at optimal conditions. Results have shown that single Ag@AuNWs can be utilized as a good platform for SERS applications with high sensitivity, stability, and reproducibility, which will benefit SERS-based research at the single entity level.

Coupling enhancement mechanisms, materials, and strategies for surface-enhanced Raman scattering devices

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has become one of the most sensitive analytical techniques for identifying the chemical components, molecular structures, molecular conformations, and the interactions between molecules. However, great challenges still need to be addressed until it can be widely accepted by the absolute quantification of analytes. Recently, many efforts have been devoted to addressing these issues via various electromagnetic (EM), chemical (CM), and EM-CM hybrid coupling enhancement strategies. In comparison with uncoupled SERS devices, they offer key advantages in terms of sensitivity, reproducibility, uniformity, stability, controllability and reliability. This review provides an in-depth analysis of coupled SERS devices, including coupling enhancement mechanisms, materials and approaches. Finally, we also discuss the remaining bottlenecks and possible strategies for the development of coupling-enhanced SERS devices in the future.

Tunable LSPR of silver/gold bimetallic nanoframes and their SERS activity for methyl red detection

Ag/Au bimetallic nanostructures have received much attention in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). However, the synthesis of this nanostructure type still remains a challenge. In the present research, Ag/Au nanoframes were synthesized via a simple room temperature solution phase chemical reduction method using pre-synthesized triangular Ag nanoplates as templates in the presence of appropriate amounts of HAuCl4. Controlling experimental parameters was applied for understanding of the growth mechanism. The galvanic exchange reaction resulted in a uniform deposition of the Au shell on the Ag nanoplates and the Ag core was removed which generated triangular hollow nanoframes. It is found that the amount of HAuCl4 added to the growth solution played a key role in controlling the Ag/Au nanoframes. The resultant silver/gold nanoframes with average size of 50 nm were applied in detecting methyl red (MR) in the solution-phase using an excitation wavelength laser of 532 nm. The SERS signal was greatly enhanced owing to the tunable plasmonic peaks in the visible region (400-650 nm). The limit of detection (LOD) of MR in diluted solution was 10-6 M. The enhancement factor (EF) was about 8 × 104 toward 10-5 M of MR. Interestingly, the linear dependence between the logarithm of the SERS signal intensity (log I) and the logarithm of the MR concentration (log C) occurred in the range from 10-6 to 10-4 M. Our work promises the application of Ag/Au nanoframes as a chemical sensor in detecting MR molecules at low concentration with high performance.

Structural Control over Bimetallic Core-Shell Nanorods for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Bimetallic nanorods are important colloidal nanoparticles for optical applications, sensing, and light-enhanced catalysis due to their versatile plasmonic properties. However, tuning the plasmonic resonances is challenging as it requires a simultaneous control over the particle shape, shell thickness, and morphology. Here, we show that we have full control over these parameters by performing metal overgrowth on gold nanorods within a mesoporous silica shell, resulting in Au-Ag, Au-Pd, and Au-Pt core-shell nanorods with precisely tunable plasmonic properties. The metal shell thickness was regulated via the precursor concentration and reaction time in the metal overgrowth. Control over the shell morphology was achieved via a thermal annealing, enabling a transition from rough nonepitaxial to smooth epitaxial Pd shells while retaining the anisotropic rod shape. The core-shell synthesis was successfully scaled up from micro- to milligrams, by controlling the kinetics of the metal overgrowth via the pH. By carefully tuning the structure, we optimized the plasmonic properties of the bimetallic core-shell nanorods for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. The Raman signal was the most strongly enhanced by the Au core-Ag shell nanorods, which we explain using finite-difference time-domain calculations.

General molten-salt route to three-dimensional porous transition metal nitrides as sensitive and stable Raman substrates

Transition metal nitrides have been widely studied due to their high electrical conductivity and excellent chemical stability. However, their preparation traditionally requires harsh conditions because of the ultrahigh activation energy barrier they need to cross in nucleation. Herein, we report three-dimensional porous VN, MoN, WN, and TiN with high surface area and porosity that are prepared by a general and mild molten-salt route. Trace water is found to be a key factor for the formation of these porous transition metal nitrides. The porous transition metal nitrides show hydrophobic surface and can adsorb a series of organic compounds with high capacity. Among them, the porous VN shows strong surface plasmon resonance, high conductivity, and a remarkable photothermal conversion efficiency. As a new type of corrosion- and radiation-resistant surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate, the porous VN exhibits an ultrasensitive detection limit of 10^-11 M for polychlorophenol.

Palladium-rich plasmonic nanorattles with enhanced LSPRs via successive galvanic replacement mediated by co-reduction

Catalytic transformations under light irradiation have been extensively demonstrated by the excitation of the localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) in noble metal-based nanoparticles. To fully harness the potential of noble metal-based nanocatalysts, it is fundamentally imperative to explore hybrid nano-systems with the most desirable enhanced LSPRs and intrinsic catalytic activities. Pd-containing hollow multimetallic nanostructures transformed from the sacrificial template of Ag via galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) offer such ideal platforms to gain quantitative insights into nanoparticle-catalyzed reactions. In this work, we successfully fabricated Pd-rich plasmonic nanorattles by means of co-reduction mediated GRR using CTAC-stabilized Au@Ag nanocuboids as templates and H₂PdCl₄ as a Pd precursor in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA) acting as a mild reducing agent. Successive titration of Au@Ag nanocuboids with the Pd precursor in the presence of AA modulates the rate of the galvanic replacement reaction as well as effective diffusion of Pd into the Ag matrix, resulting in increased dimensions and enlarged cavity sizes. Reduction of oxidized Ag⁺ back to Ag⁰ by AA, along with the deposition of Pd to form homogeneously mixed bimetallic layers not only prevents LSPRs peak from damping with increasing Pd content but also ensures the enhanced catalytic activities. Through precise control of added H₂PdCl₄ titrant, an unconventional steep increase in extinction intensity accompanied by tunable plasmon resonances shifted towards the NIR spectral region was experimentally observed due to the increasing physical cross-sections and plasmon hybridization in hollow nanorattles. Four colloids of Pd-rich nanorattles obtained by addition of different amounts of the H₂PdCl₄ titrant were used as catalysts for reduction of 4-nitrothiophenol in the presence of NaBH₄ monitored by SERS.

Gold nanobipyramid-embedded silver-platinum hollow nanostructures for monitoring stepwise reduction and oxidation reactions

Metal hollow nanostructures based on gold nanobipyramids (Au NBPs) are of great interest for the combination of tunable plasmonic resonances and excellent physicochemical properties. Based on the core-shell Au NBP@Ag nanorods with desired sizes, herein we reported the synthesis and growth mechanism of Au NBP-embedded AgPt hollow nanostructures with tunable thickness and size. The Au NBP@AgPt nanoframes were obtained at lower temperature, in which cetyltrimethylammonium bromine (CTAB) was applied as a capping agent to guide the deposition of Pt atoms on the edges and corners of Au NBPs@Ag nanorods. With the increase of reaction temperature, the Au NBP@AgPt nanoframes convert into nanocages due to the atomic migration to the surfaces. The surface plasmon resonance of the Au NBP@AgPt hollow nanostructure shifts from red to blue, which is ascribed to the changes in coverage area and location site of the AgPt alloy. When CTAB was replaced by cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), Au NBP@AgPt nanocages dominate the product. The surface roughness and thickness of the nanocages can be controlled by the temperature and the amount of Pt precursor. Moreover, Au NBP@AgPt hollow nanostructures show excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering and exhibit remarkable stability in harsh environments. Taking into account the advantages of the plasmonic property (Au NBPs), catalytic activity (Pt) and plasmon-enhanced signal (Ag), the Au NBP@AgPt hollow nanostructures are a promising candidate for technological applications in catalytic reactions.

In situ monitoring of catalytic reaction on single nanoporous gold nanowire with tuneable SERS and catalytic activity

Single nanoporous gold nanowire was introduced as a tunable one-dimensional nano-sensor platform with both SERS and catalytic activity, and it precisely fit the requirement of materials for in situ SERS monitoring of plasmon-assisted catalytic reaction. The nanoporous gold nanowires exhibited much more "hot spots" on their surface and much better SPR effect than the smooth nanowires. We demonstrated that these nanowires could be used as a SERS substrate assuring the sensitivity and reproducibility of Raman signals. Besides, they could be applied as a kind of heterogeneous catalyst for in situ SERS monitoring of the plasmon-assisted catalytic reaction-reduction of p-nitrothiophenol (p-NTP) to p,p-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) at their surface. The SERS and catalytic activity of the nanowires could be respectively optimized by adjusting their dealloying time, similar to the procedure of catalyst screening.

Revitalizing silver nanocrystals as a redox catalyst by modifying their surface with an isocyanide-based compound

Silver is an excellent catalyst for oxidation reactions such as ethylene epoxidation, but it shows limited activity toward reduction reactions. Here we report a strategy to revitalize Ag nanocrystals as a redox catalyst for the production of an aromatic azo compound by modifying their surface with an isocyanide-based compound. We also leverage in situ fingerprint spectroscopy to acquire molecular insights into the reaction mechanism by probing the vibrational modes of all chemical species at the catalytic surface with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. We establish that binding of isocyanide to Ag nanocrystals makes it possible for Ag to extract the oxygen atoms from the nitro-groups of nitroaromatics and then use these atoms to oxidize isocyanide to isocyanate. Concurrently, the coupling between two adjacent deoxygenated nitroaromatic molecules leads to the formation of an aromatic azo compound.

Plasmonic Metallic Heteromeric Nanostructures

Binary, ternary, and other high-order plasmonic heteromers possess remarkable physical and chemical properties, enabling them to be used in numerous applications. The seed-mediated approach is one of the most promising and versatile routes to produce plasmonic heteromers. Selective growth of one or multiple domains on desired sites of noble metal, semiconductor, or magnetic seeds would form desired heteromeric nanostructures with multiple functionalities and synergistic effects. In this work, the challenges for the synthetic approaches are discussed with respect to tuning the thermodynamics, as well as the kinetic properties (e.g., pH, temperature, injection rate, among others). Then, plasmonic heteromers with their structure advantages displaying unique activities compared to other hybrid nanostructures (e.g., core-shell, alloy) are highlighted. Some of the main most recent applications of plasmonic heteromers are also presented. Finally, perspectives for further exploitation of plasmonic heteromers are demonstrated. The goal of this work is to provide the current know-how on the synthesis routes of plasmonic heteromers in a summarized manner, so as to achieve a better understanding of the resulting properties and to gain an improved control of their performances and extend their breadth of applications.

Low temperature synthesis of plasmonic molybdenum nitride nanosheets for surface enhanced Raman scattering

Molybdenum nitride (δ–MoN) is an important functional material due to its impressive catalytic, energy storage, and superconducting properties. However, the synthesis of δ–MoN usually requires extremely harsh conditions; thus, the insight into δ−MoN is far behind that of oxides and sulfides of molybdenum. Herein, we report that ultrathin δ−MoN nanosheets are prepared at 270 °C and 12 atm. WN, VN, and TiN nanosheets are also synthesized by this method. The δ−MoN nanosheets show strong surface plasmon resonance, high conductivity, excellent thermal and chemical stability as well as a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 61.1%. As a promising surface enhanced Raman scattering substrate, the δ−MoN nanosheets exhibit a 8.16 × 10⁶ enhanced factor and a 10⁻¹⁰ level detection limit for polychlorophenol.

Molybdenum nitride is promising for catalysis, energy storage and Raman scattering, but it is synthesized under harsh conditions. Here the authors synthesize highly crystalline molybdenum nitride nanosheets using a relatively mild, non-aqueous solvothermal approach that can be extended to other nitrides.

Core-Shell Nanostructure-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy for Surface Catalysis

ConspectusThe rational design of highly efficient catalysts relies on understanding their structure-activity relationships and reaction mechanisms at a molecular level. Such an understanding can be obtained by in situ monitoring of dynamic reaction processes using surface-sensitive techniques. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) can provide rich structural information with ultrahigh surface sensitivity, even down to the single-molecule level, which makes it a promising tool for the in situ study of catalysis. However, only a few metals (like Au, Ag, and Cu) with particular nanostructures can generate strong SERS effects. Thus, it is almost impossible to employ SERS to study transition metals (like Pt, Pd, Ru, etc.) and other nonmetal materials that are usually used in catalysis (material limitation). Furthermore, SERS is also unable to study model single crystals with atomically flat surface structures or practical nanocatalysts (morphology limitation). These limitations have significantly hindered the applications of SERS in catalysis over the past four decades since its discovery, preventing SERS from becoming a widely used technique in catalysis. In this Account, we summarize the extensive efforts done by our group since the 1980s, particularly in the past decade, to overcome the material and morphology limitations in SERS. Particular attention has been paid to the work using core-shell nanostructures as SERS substrates, because they provide high Raman enhancement and are highly versatile for application on different catalytic materials. Different SERS methodologies for catalysis developed by our group, including the "borrowing" strategy, shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS), and SHINERS-satellite strategy, are discussed in this account, with an emphasis on their principles and applications. These methodologies have successfully overcome the long-standing limitations of traditional SERS, enabling in situ tracking of catalysis at model single-crystal surfaces and practical nanocatalysts that can hardly be studied by SERS. Using these methodologies, we systematically studied a series of fundamentally important reactions, such as oxygen reduction reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, electrooxidation, CO oxidation, and selective hydrogenation. As such, direct spectroscopic evidence of key intermediates that can hardly be detected by other traditional techniques was obtained. Combined with density functional theory and other in situ techniques, the reaction mechanisms and structure-activity relationships of these catalytic reactions were revealed at a molecular level. Furthermore, the future of SERS in catalysis has also been proposed in this work, which we believe should be focused on the in situ dynamic studies at the single-molecule, or even single-atom, level using techniques with ultrahigh sensitivity or spatial resolution, for example, single-molecule SERS or tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. In summary, core-shell nanostructure-enhanced Raman spectroscopies are shown to greatly boost the application of SERS in catalysis, from model systems like single-crystal surfaces to practical nanocatalysts, liquid-solid interfaces to gas-solid interfaces, and electrocatalysis to heterogeneous catalysis to photocatalysis. Thus, we believe this Account would attract increasing attention to SERS in catalysis and opens new avenues for catalytic studies.

In situ surface-derivation of AgPdMo/MoS2 nanowires for synergistic hydrogen evolution catalysis in alkaline solution

Metallic sulfides have emerged as highly active, durable, and robust electrocatalysts for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to their intriguing electronic and catalytic properties. One of the important strategies to further enhance their HER performance is to build multimetallic nanostructures by tuning the electronic state. Here we combine multimetallic structures and metal sulfides, and report an efficient strategy for the in situ surface-derivation of molybdenum sulfide nanosheets (MoS₂ NSs) on Ag-Pd-Mo alloy nanowires (AgPdMo NWs) to form AgPdMo/MoS₂ NWs. The heterostructure incorporates AgPdMo NWs with high conductivity and MoS₂ NSs with abundant active sites, which act synergistically in alkaline solution. The as-tuned AgPdMo/MoS₂ NWs exhibit Pt-like electrocatalytic performance for the HER, with a small overpotential of 54 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and a low Tafel slope of 72 mV dec^-1. The present work demonstrates a potential strategy for designing heterostructures with multimetallic composition by in situ surface-derivation with enhanced performance in water splitting.

Gold nanobipyramid-embedded ultrathin metal nanoframes for in situ monitoring catalytic reactions

Metal nanoframes, especially ultrathin ones, with excellent plasmonic properties are synthetically interesting and highly attractive. Herein we report on the synthesis of Au nanobipyramid-embedded ultrathin metal nanoframes with one of the plasmon modes very similar to that of the Au nanobipyramids. The synthesis is mediated by silver coating on Au nanobipyramids. The excellent plasmonic properties of the Au nanobipyramid-embedded ultrathin metal nanoframes are ascribed to the little influence of the ultrathin metal nanoframes on the Au nanobipyramids, as verified by electrodynamic simulations. The increase in the amount of the added metal atoms changes the nanostructure from the nanoframe to a nanocage shape. The method has also been successfully applied to (Au nanobipyramid)@Ag nanorods with different lengths and Au nanobipyramids with different longitudinal dipolar plasmon wavelengths, suggesting the generality of our approach. We have further shown that the Au nanobipyramid-embedded ultrathin metal nanoframes possess an excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering and outstanding in situ reaction probing performance. Our study opens up a route for the construction of plasmonic ultrathin metal nanoframes based on Au nanobipyramids for plasmon-enabled applications.

Crystal-Amorphous Core-Shell Structure Synergistically Enabling TiO2 Nanoparticles' Remarkable SERS Sensitivity for Cancer Cell Imaging

Exploring novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active materials with high detection sensitivity, excellent biocompatibility, low biotoxicity, and good spectral stability is urgently required for efficacious cancer cell diagnosis. Herein, black TiO₂ nanoparticles (B-TiO₂ NPs) with crystal-amorphous core-shell structure are successfully developed. Remarkable SERS activity is derived from the synergistic effect of the promising crystal-amorphous core-shell structure. Abundant excitons can be generated by high-efficiency exciton transitions in the crystal core, a feature that provides sufficient charge source. Significantly, the novel crystal-amorphous heterojunction enables the efficient exciton separation at the crystal-amorphous interface, which can effectively facilitate charge transfer from the crystal core to the amorphous shell and results in exciton enrichment at the amorphous shell. Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) confirms the Fermi level of the amorphous layer shifting to a relatively low position compared to that of the crystal core, allowing efficient photoinduced charge transfer (PICT) between the amorphous shell and probe molecules. The first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations further indicate that the amorphous shell structure possesses a narrow band gap and a relatively high electronic density of state (DOS), which can effectively promote vibration coupling with target molecules. Moreover, MCF-7 drug-resistant (MCF-7/ADR) breast cancer cells can be quickly and accurately diagnosed based on the high-sensitivity B-TiO₂-based SERS bioprobe. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the crystal-amorphous core-shell heterojunction enhancement of the TiO₂-molecule PICT process, which widens the application of semiconductor-based SERS platforms in precision diagnosis and treatment of cancer, has been investigated.

Orthogonal deposition of Au on different facets of Ag cuboctahedra for the fabrication of nanoboxes with complementary surfaces

We report the fabrication of Ag-Au cuboctahedral nanoboxes enclosed by {100} and {111} facets, respectively, through the orthogonal deposition of Au on two different facets of Ag cuboctahedra. Specifically, we titrate aqueous HAuCl₄ into an aqueous mixture containing Ag cuboctahedra, ascorbic acid, and NaOH (under basic conditions), in the presence of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), respectively. In the case of PVP, the oxidation of Ag was initiated from the {111} facets of the cuboctahedra through the galvanic replacement reaction between Au(iii) and Ag, accompanied by the deposition of Au onto the {100} facets. Because the dissolved Ag(i) ions could react with NaOH to form Ag₂O on the {111} facets and thus terminate the galvanic reaction, the Au(iii) ions would be further reduced by the ascorbate monoanion (HAsc^-) to generate Au atoms for their continuing deposition on the {100} facets, converting Ag cuboctahedra to Ag@Au_{100} cuboctahedra. Upon the etching of Ag from the core, we obtained Ag-Au cuboctahedral nanoboxes enclosed by {100} facets. In contrast, when CTAC was present, the oxidation of Ag through a galvanic reaction could continuously proceed on {100} facets as the dissolved Ag(i) ions would react with the excessive amount of Cl^- ions derived from CTAC to produce soluble AgCl₂^- ions rather than insoluble Ag₂O. As a result, the dissolved Ag(i) and Au(iii) ions would be co-reduced by HAsc^- for the generation of Ag and Au atoms, followed by their co-deposition onto {111} facets for the generation of Ag@Au_{111} concave cuboctahedra. After the removal of Ag from the core by etching, we obtained Ag-Au_{111} cuboctahedral nanoboxes enclosed by {111} facets. Both samples of cuboctahedral nanoboxes exhibited strong optical absorption in the infrared region. Interestingly, the cuboctahedral nanoboxes enclosed by {111} facets showed significantly enhanced catalytic activity toward the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by NaBH₄ relative to their counterparts encased by {100} facets.
